The Best Man's Problem by Sera Taíno My rating: 4 of 5 stars Rafael Navarro thinks he knows what he wants in a relationship: reliability, predictability, nothing at all that might affect his routine. Ètienne Galois is none of those things, and yet, the attraction persists. All they have to do is get through Rafael's future brother-in-law's bachelor party together…right? What I loved: -the culture and the background of the characters playing such a large role -how attracted to each other they were; truly every time they're thinking about each other or describing each other it's very clear and all they can think about -Rafael's dad was a truly stand-out character in this for me What I was on the fence about: -very little! This was an enjoyable romance if you're in the mood for a light, quick read -Sometimes it felt like I only know Rafi was uptight and by the book because he kept telling me he was; a lot of the obstacles to their relationship weren't exactly huge -the passage of time read a little oddly, especially towards the end. In terms of book series about groups of siblings finding love…this is the kind of story I'd enjoy seeing a Netflix show on. View all my reviews

A Delicious Dilemma by Sera Taíno

 Debut novel that brings a taste of Puerto Rico, a bit of French, and some American to the table in this romance that takes place in a small community faced with potentially huge changes…if a compromise is not found.

 What I liked: * Val: chef, sister, daughter, friend, community leader, has trust issues, loves deeply

* Phillip: developer, designer, wealthy, friend, son, focused , good hearted, honest…mostly

* The family aspect of the story – how family impacts both of the main characters

* The food…sounded scrumptious

* The tour of Val’s neighborhood

* The chemistry between Val and Phillip

* Etienne: wondering if he will end up in a story

* Val’s family and friends – will they have books of their own or is this a standalone story?

* The community Val grew up in

* The idea of roots and history within community as well as the people who are willing to look out for one another

* That there was a HEA

 What I didn’t like:

* That Phillip’s father had become so focused on success, winning, and money that he had lost sight of community

* Val’s inability to “see” as clearly as she could have

 Did I like this book? Yes

Would I read more by this author? Yes

RESERVAR EXCURSIÓN A VARADERO Varadero es por excelencia uno de los destinos turísticos cubanos más visitados cada año. Si piensas visitar este precioso lugar aqui te dejamos una guia de cómo emplear tu tiempo:

1. La Playa

La playa de Varadero es un lugar icónico para todos aquellos que visitan Cuba debido a su belleza, arena fina y popularidad. Es sin duda uno de esos lugares q no te puedes perder en la vida. Se caracteriza por poseer olas suaves, poca profundidad y un agua muy cristalina lo que permite disfrutar placenteramente de su mar. 2. Visita a las cuevas  Te recomendamos que visites las cuevas: Saturno y Ambrosio. Cueva Saturno:

Ubicada a  12 km de Matanzas en dirección a Varadero se encuentra esta gruta a la que aflora un lago de aguas cristalinas conocida con el nombre de Cueva Saturno.  En ella se pueden observar abundantes estalagmitas y estalactitas. El lago cuenta con una profundidad de 18m pero sus aguas son de una transparencia tan increíble que permiten ver el fondo sin dificultad alguna. Muchas estalagmitas están sumergidas de forma parcial o total, lo que quiere decir que en tiempos pasados la cueva no estaba inundada. Cueva Ambrosio:

La Cueva de Ambrosio es una cueva natural donde se encuentra un conjunto de pictografías muy importantes en el Caribe. Esta cueva está localizada en la costa sur de la península de Hicacos, en una pequeña elevación denominada loma La Caseta. La zona pertenece al barrio de Varadero, del municipio Cárdenas, provincia de Matanzas. Se encuentra dentro de la Reserva Ecológica Varahicacos. Llegamos a ella por la autopista al sur a 500 metros del Club Amigo Varadero, son casi 47 dibujos precolombinos descubiertos en esta cueva de 300 metros de longitud.

3.Delfinario

En el delfinario podrás disfrutar del espectáculo que se realiza con delfines todos los días. De las experiencias mas populares se encuentra la de nadar con los delfines.

4. Excursión a La Habana

No tienes que perderte una visita a la capital de los cubanos, ya que puedes hacerlo en un tour a La Habana desde Varadero en un solo día. En esta ciudad sentirás que el tiempo se ha detenido  pues podrás apreciar coches clásicos americanos,  edificaciones coloniales, como la Catedral de San Cristóbal o los castillos y fortalezas que defendían la ciudad. En este recorrido recorrerás también lugares emblemáticos como el Malecón Habanero o el Cementerio de Colón. Pasarás también por los famosos bares, restaurantes y hoteles de la ciudad como La Bodeguita del Medio, El Floridita o el Hotel Nacional de Cuba. Esta ciudad fue elegida en el año 2014 como una de las Siete Ciudades Maravillas del Mundo y en 1987 la Unesco declaró su casco histórico como Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Si llegas a Cuba, la visita a su capital es algo que no debes perderte.

5. Restaurantes y Centros Nocturnos

Por último y no menos importante puedes visitar clubes nocturnos para bailar y disfrutar de buena música en un ambiente muy del caribe. Aqui les dejamos una excelente seleccion de estos lugares. I've been thinking a lot about ratings for books.

I just gave a romance novel (The Best Man's Problem by Sera Taíno) four stars on Goodreads. Prior to that, the last two books I gave four stars were The Brides of Rollrock Island by Margo Lanagan and Passing by Nella Larson.

These are wildly different books.

The Best Man's Problem is an enemies-to-lovers, opposites attract somewhat spicy mlm romance that I read in about two hours. The Brides of Rollrock Island is a harrowing, folktale-adjacent story about generational trauma. Passing is about the lives of two light-skinned Black women in the 1920s, one of whom lives as a white woman.

Of the three, Passing is probably the one that would get the stamp of being "highbrow". It got an artsy film adaptation and everything. My motivation for reading them was entirely different: I wanted to read Passing out of curiosity, I had heard about the movie and wanted to read the book to educate myself. The Brides of Rollrock Island I read because I love the author's work and I knew it would make me feel melancholy and achy in the best way. The Best Man's Problem I read because I wanted to have a comfortable, easy and enjoyable read in the space of an afternoon.

They all got four stars because they all matched that motivation very well. They didn't change my life (I'm stingy with five stars, sue me), but I enjoyed every one of these books a lot for the purpose I set out to read them.

It just feels really weird to me to rate them all on the same scale, because I'm rating them very subjectively. Did this book give me what I wanted out of it? Yes. Four stars.

I know there are people out there who rate via categories that seem more empirical. And to a degree, I guess that makes sense. But rating craft, like beautiful sentence structure, word choice, dialogue...I mean, I could do all those things, but it would still be subjective. I think The Brides of Rollrock Island is probably the most beautiful of the three in craft terms; someone else might choose something else.

More dangerously, if you read across the board, like me, that leads to a trend towards giving more points to "serious" literature and less to genre fiction. It's no secret people kind of look down on romance as a genre, especially explicit romance, especially especially explicit romance starring lgbtq+ leads of color, all of which is true of the example I'm using. It's "easy" reading, predictable and often formulaic, true, but if that's what you're after, why shouldn't that be worth the same as a more complex book when you're in a different mood?

I don't know that I have a point here, I guess what I'm saying is:

Rating everything we read numerically is not really all that helpful.

Therefore, I have elected radical individualism and rate solely based on the criterion of how happy reading a book made me.

Capitulo 1

Poco sabemos de la historia de Puerto Rico antes de la llegada de los Españoles en 1493. Sabemos que los taínos habitaban la isla, conocemos algunas de sus palabras, costumbres, tradiciones. Ellos fueron los últimos habitantes de la tercera isla del mar caribe en conocer la plena libertad. Después del 19 de Noviembre de 1493, momento en que Colon invadir a Boriken, y hasta el día de hoy, los hijos y hijas de borinquen han vivido subyugados por uno o otro amo.

Pero tal como corre por nuestras venas la sangre taina, todavía tenemos el concepto de la libertad en la sangre. Lo saboreamos como si alguna vez lo hubiéramos probado. Este es nuestro momento de alzarnos como pueblo, y demandar la libertad de determinación que es derecho natural del hombre.

Por eso, hago este llamado a mis hermanos, que se unan para gritar a una voz, tan alto para que escuche el mundo, que la colonia hoy muere. Y nace una nación digna y poderosa, llena de esperanza para el futuro. Viva Puerto Rico Libre!

Carolina, Puerto Rico 12 de Enero de 1897

La carta copiada de Don Alberto Medina llego a las manos de Violeta Manzanares por parte de su padre, Don Amador Manzanares, quien recién había llegado de la reunion del grupo separatista. La emoción de su padre la animaba, pues después de anos de planes, ya se había tomado una decision, y no habría marcha atras: intentarían liberar a Puerto Rico de las garras coloniales españolas tras tres siglos bajo el manto español.

Estaban en la sala principal de su casa, frente a la plaza de Carolina. Un pueblo a dos horas en caballo de San Juan Bautista, el islote capital de Puerto Rico. Comenzaba a oscurecer, y las modernas lamparas de la casa aun no estaban prendidas. La casa de los Manzares, en la Ruiz Belvis, contaba con todas las modernidades a la que una familia de la clase alta podia aspirar, electricidad, cuartos de bano, plomeria.

“Padre” Violeta susurro - “ha llegado el momento. Y me llenan de miedo estas palabras. No puedo creer que hemos llegado ha este punto y temo que corra sangre de nuestros hermanos.”

“Querida hija” contesto Don Amador, con su voz aguda y melodiosa, “tu instincto de temor es natural y correcto. Esto no es un juego y si hay riesgo de que se derrame sangre. Pero, si no es sangre nuestra la que se derrame por la patria, entonces sera la sangre de otros, pues los abusos de espana no paran. Prefiero morir de pie, que seguir viendo aplastado por el pie del Rey.”

“Disculpe la interrupcion Don Amador” interrumpio Sibila, la ama de llaves de los Manzanares, pero Don Rigoberto acaba de llegar y quiere hablar con usted y con mi nina Violeta. Le hago pasar a su despacho? Esta un poco agitado.”

Don Rigoberto, el unico doctor de Carolina, eran un afable senor, dedicado, tal como don Amador a cuidar del projimo y a luchar encontra de la injusticia. Secretamente era el lider de la faccion separatista a la cual pertenecian los manzanares. Violeta se levanto lentamente, mirando a su padre con temor - pensando que el plan que recien habia sido aprobado ya estaba en peligro.

“Tio Rigoberto!” le recibo Violeta tomandole las manos y besandolo en mejilla. “Que ha pasado?”

Rigoberto sonrio con orgullo, pues Violeta, su ahijada favorita, nunca podia contener su curiosidad. Le dio un fuerte abrazo, y luego le dio la mano a Don Amador.

“Mi nina, nada ha pasado, pero, puede pasar y por eso necesito tu ayuda. Quiero que tu padre escuche mi propuesta para que el nos ayude a ver que rumbo debemos tomar.”

“Adelante compadre, que ocurre?” respondio nervioso Don Amador.

“Nos han llegado noticias de que tenemos un espia en nuestro grupo. Alguien ha estado informando sobre nuestras actividades a los militares. Nuestro plan en Yauco solo ha sido comentado en un grupo pequeno y pretendemos que aun sea asi, pero tenemos que investigar quien es la rata que anda hablando de mas, pues si no, no podremos llevar a cabo nuestro plan.”

“Hay algun sospechoso?”

“Tenemos varios en la mirilla y estamos investigando a cada uno. Por eso necesito la ayuda de Violeta. “

“Por supuesto, en que puedo ayudar”

Antes, dejame explicarles de que conlleva la ayuda, y luego tu y tu padre deciden si creen que puedes. Hay un nuevo partiicpante en las reuniones, Miguel Centello. Es hijo de los Centellos de Caguas. Tienen una finca con varios sembradios. Yo conozco al padre Don Miguel, y siempre ha preferido mantenerse al margen de la cuestion politica, mas por miedo a represalias que por conviccion. El hijo, sin embargo, acaba de regresar del continente, donde estudio arte en Madrid. Tan pronto llego, empezo a inculcarse en nuestro grupo, invitado por Eugenio Sobria, quien estaba suplementando su sueldo de abogado con informes a los espanoles. Creemos que Miguel estaba en las mismas.”

“Por que no lo dejan de invitar y listo” pregunto Don Amador.

“Creemos que podemos utilizarlo para dar informacion falsa y asi despistar a los militares.” “Ahi entra Violeta”continuo. “Queremos que te le acerques de manera social.”

“Ya entiendo por donde vas”. No creo que sea buena idea Rigoberto. Si Miguel es el espia, Violeta correria peligro.

“Entiendo” - “era una idea alocada”

Esperen. La que no entiende soy yo.

Violeta -

No, quiero entender. A que se refieren de manera social?

Tu padrino, quien prometio protejerte y guiarte, quiere que entables un cortejo con Miguel, para que asi puedas corroborar si es afin a la causa, o es mentira. Y yo digo que no.

Creo que tu padre tiene razon. No debi mencionarlo, dijo Rigoberto con brillo en los ojos. El ya sabia que violeta querria participar del engano, y por eso comento el plan frente a ella. Hubiera preferido no involucrarla, pero a sus 20 anos, Violeta, la hija mayor de Don Amador, era una de sus mejores aliadas en la lucha separatista y sabia que podia confiar plenamente en ella.

El plan era sencillo. Violeta seria presentada a Miguel como una potencial esposa, ya que su padres ya estaban buscandole mujer. Violeta tenia la edad adecuada y aparte, despues de conocer a Miguel, sabia que Violeta le intrigaria, no solo porque Violeta era una mujer de rasgos hermosos, pero era inteligente y de caracter profundo.

Ademas, los Centello estarian encantado con la alianza a los Manzanares. Aparte de la fortuna familiar de Don Amador, Dona Rosa, era la hija menor de un marques espanol, y habia conocido a su esposo cuando el fue de viaje a valencia a visitar a su familia que aun quedaba en espana. Aunque el era un criollo, la fortuna de la familia Manzanares era suficiente para que su linaje colonial no fuera un estorbo, y se llevo a Dona Rosa a la isla.

Lo unico que haria Don Rigoberto es presentarlos en un baile que se celebraria la proxima semana en casa de los Alcantara en San Juan. De ahi, Violeta tendria que conseguir que MIguel decidiera cortejarla.

La familia Manzanares compuesta por Don Amador, Dona Rosa, y sus tres hijas, Violeta, Margarita e Iris llegaron en su caruaje a la mansion de los Alcantara para el baile en celebracion del aniversario de bodas de Dona Isabel Trujillo de Alcantara y Don Alejandro Alcantara. Las calles adoquinadas de San Juan hicieron del ultimo tramo del viaje una pesadilla, pues el tlac tlac tlac de las ruedas sobre las piedras desiguales removieron a los pasajeros. Al llegar, bajo primero Don Amador, y ayudo a bajar a sus mujeres. La ultima en bajar fue Violeta, quien desde aquella noche en que le hablaron del plan, tenia grandes nervios al conocer a Miguel Centello, hijo.

Que tal si no le intereso, se preguntaba a solas. Habian decidido no decir nada a nadie, ni siquiera a su madre. Y la inseguridad se calaba poco a poco en su mente. Era una gran responsabilidad y ella queria asumirla con fuerza.

Antes de entrar al baile, le pido a su hermana del medio, Margarita, que le echara un ojito.

Mujer, si te ves hermosa como siempre! Deja de ajustarte tanto. Margarita de 17 anos, era el polo opuesto de Violeta, era alta como su padre, y de cabellos claros y ojos cafes como su madre. Violeta, era de corta estatura, de cabello oscuro y ojos verdes, sus rasgos eran remincientes a una espanola de granada, con cuerpo de guitarra y un sabor a mora lejano. En cambio Iris, la menor, era rubia y de ojos verdes, la mezcla perfecta de las dos hermanas.

Esta noche, mas que ninguna antes, Violeta parecia una reina. Sus nervios habian decorado sus mejillas con un leve color rosado, resaltando el leve color oliva de su piel. Su vestido era un fino lino color lila, con listones de color crema en las mangas abombachadas. Su ajuar habia sido traido de Inglaterra, regalo de su tio rigoberto y su esposa para su cumpleanos. Una level mantilla la cubria del frio de la noche y su cabello estaba arreglado en un mono complejo en la nuca, con trenzas entrelasadas con perlas. Habia tomado mucho cuidado con su apariencia esa noche, y al entrar, tomo un aliento profundo y trato de mantenerse en calma, y con la mirada buscaba a Don Rigoberto para que le presentara a su presa. Usualmente no participaba en los bailes de salon que ocurrian cada semana, prefiriendo estar en su casa con un buen libro o ayudando a su papa con las formulaciones de la farmacia.

Don Amador tomo a Dona Rosa de la mano y la llevo a la pista de baile, donde se estaba formando el proximo turno con una danza. La pequena orquestra daba los primero acordes, y Violeta miro con carino como sus padres daban el paseo, su madre mirando coquetamente a su marido, y el corazon de violeta se encojio un poco, pues sabia que la relacion de sus papas no era comun. Decidio buscar a sus amigas antes de buscar a su tio, sus nervios estaban creciendo y queria reirse un poco con trinidad y soledad, sus mejores amigas. Al verlas al centro del salon, camino hacia ellas, cuando una de las parejas que baiilaban perdio el ritmo y tropezo con ella, impulsandola casi al suelo. Unos brazos fuertes la detuvieron, impidendo que callera, y la pareja que bailaba se disculpo y siguio su pasos, y al darse la vuelta, se encontro con uno de los hombres mas atractivos que habia visto en su vida.
