I feel so bad for this beautiful 1805 home in New Bedford, Massachusetts. It wants to be a home again, b/c it's currently being used as an office. Why is this allowed? I hope someone buys it and puts it back. 6bds, 4ba, reduced from $1.05M to $980, probably b/c of what they did to the kitchen, alone. Let's assess the damage and what has to be done.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, they get points for leaving the original railing and putting a nice runner on the stairs. They left the chandelier and painted the woodwork white. But at least it's original. I could live w/the white. The Exit sign and industrial fire alarm need to go, along w/the water cooler. And, the indoor/outdoor carpeting comes up, too.
Tumblr media
The sitting room looks nice- I wonder if they painted the walls a more homey/Victorian color and put some furniture around. Thankfully, they didn't put in neon lights and the fireplace is original.
Tumblr media
The fireplace is here. That doesn't look like wainscoting, though, it looks like molding.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They completely eliminated the kitchen, but kept the pantry. So, it needs a whole new kitchen.
Tumblr media
I don't know if they put up that wall w/the door.
Tumblr media
This is what's behind the wall. It was probably a sun porch.
Tumblr media
Maybe this is a dining room. The windows are beautiful.
Tumblr media
A staff kitchen upstairs.
Tumblr media
Oh, no, they made built-in cubicles. Get the sledgehammer.
Tumblr media
This door has a fire safety opener, I guess you can live with that.
Tumblr media
Well, the back yard's gone and there's a series of ramps and stairs, plus parking. The lot measures .51 acre.
Tumblr media
There appears to be a side yard.
Tumblr media
And, they cut the front yard in two to make a large drive with an entrance and an exit. There's a lot to do to make it a home again.

Discharge Petition for H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964
Record Group 233: Records of the U.S. House of RepresentativesSeries: General Records
This item, H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, faced strong opposition in the House Rules Committee. Howard Smith, Chairman of the committee, refused to schedule hearings for the bill. Emanuel Celler, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, attempted to use this discharge petition to move the bill out of committee without holding hearings. The petition failed to gain the required majority of Congress (218 signatures), but forced Chairman Smith to schedule hearings.

POV: You are researching Cuno DeRuyter Controversy
Tumblr media
“ As the 50′s continued, the RCM found itself exhausting it’s manpower supply so thoroughly that it was deemed necessary to ‘expedite the careers’ of the certain members of the the Junior Detective Childhood Outreach programme. Figure A, Cuno DeRuyter, is one such member...
“Records show that Fig. A was first enrolled into the Junior Detectives in 10. March ‘51, but records have proven to be unreliable...”
“ ...Fig. A was stated as 16 years of age when he was enrolled into the Programme, but 5 years later he was matriculated into the RCM’s 41st precinct as a Lt.(Junior grade), in the Major Crimes Unit, at the age of 18...”
“Medical records obtained through ICP show a consistent pattern amongst Figures A, B, D, and G...[ ] “
“between the years ‘53 and ‘57, Precinct 41′s Dr. Gottlieb, had issued 3 referrals to the St. Bastiens Childrens Hospital, for ‘Severe Amphetamine Withdrawals Symptoms’...Fig. A had a known history of Amphetamine misuse, antisocial personality disorders, seizures and self harm.”
Tumblr media
“... Data from the RCM Departement de Recours humains shows a reduction of 36% percent, in some cases leaving entire precincts unmanned. International Collaboration Police and the International Community began to press Restructural proposals, which included a low interest loan of 134 million real to modernize the equipment, in response to mounting violence...”
“Fig. A was dispatched to the DUSAD (Débardeurs Union Special Autonomy District) on 14th December ‘57, to ‘oversee domestic imports at special autonomous checkpoint #2...”
Tumblr media
“... reports of a body found in Martinais that match the medical records of Fig. A appear two weeks after he was declared M.I.A. Investigations have not been furthcoming with conclusive resolutions. Investigators report diffuclty with to I.D body in a dismembered state and with advance stage of decay. Current available records from the RCM DRH list Sgt. DeRuyter, M.I.A...”
“This reports has found that while some outliers, such as Fig A and G, may find resemblance to a ‘Child Soldier Programme’ the vast majority of cases where participants in the Junior Detectives Programme were allowed to matriculate into RCM were beneficial instances where the administration was forced to find the most efficient solution to a crisis in officer retention.”

The 16-year-old girl caught on camera pummeling an Asian mother from Nevada as she was riding a Manhattan train with her family last week has been charged with assault.
Arrest and charges: The teenager reportedly turned herself in to the New York Police Department (NYPD) on Tuesday morning in the same area where the attack occurred. She was arrested and charged with two counts of assault for repeatedly punching Sue Young, the 51-year-old mother, and Joanna Lin, a 34-year-old bystander who filmed the viral incident.
The viral attack: Young and her husband, Ken, and their 11-year-old twin daughters were onboard a southbound F train near West 4th St. station at around 8 p.m. on Aug. 3 when three teenage girls, including the arrested 16-year-old, began laughing and pointing at the family.
When Young decided to laugh with them as a way to stop their apparent taunts, the trio became enraged. According to Young, the girls began cursing and at one point said, “Go back to where you came from, b*tch!” The girls stood over the family as Lin began recording the altercation.
When the 16-year-old saw Lin recording, she allegedly punched Lin multiple times. Lin said the girl hit her in the first and second attacks and then dragged her by the hair to the floor and hit her “a few times” in the head in the third attack. Young was also attacked as she tried to get to Lin, causing bruising to her arm and head.
“As soon as I made contact and pushed her shoulders away, they all came after me. I backed up, but the girl in the white t-shirt came slugging at me… She grabbed my hair, I grabbed her hair, and I basically just grabbed onto her hair to shield my face because she was swinging,” Young told the New York Post.
It was then other passengers intervened to protect the family. The three teenagers managed to flee the scene at the next stop
Investigation: The NYPD previously offered a $3,500 reward for information leading to the arrest of the 16-year-old girl. According to police, the incident is being investigated as a possible hate crime as the alleged perpetrator made an “anti-ethnic remark” during the assault.
Young and Lin’s statement: However, Young and Lin said that they do not think that the incident was a hate crime. While Young said that stereotypes of Asians being less confrontational had likely led the young Black women to view them as easy targets, she does not believe that the attack was initially motivated by racial animus, according to NBC News. Young and her husband said they do not want to harbor or spark resentment toward the girls and the Black community.
“These are very young girls. Somebody or something or some circumstance has made a big impression on them — whether it’s historical pressure, societal pressure, social pressure,” Young told NBC News.
Lin, who is relieved by the 16-year-old’s decision to turn herself in, also hopes that the teen will issue an apology and receive “therapy, counseling and mentorship.”

Lovely 1933 English Tudor in Indianapolis, Indiana. The thing about fully decorated homes is this: It's someone else's taste and either you love it or you don't. If you don't, it's not worth the cost and work involved in redoing everything. 5bds, 3.5ba, $1.150M. So, what do you think of the decor?
Tumblr media
Beautiful entrance hall with arches and columns.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The large sitting room has an amazing ceiling, a bump-out sitting area, and a magnificent fireplace. Not sure I like the stained glass light fixture. I kind of prefer chandeliers.
Tumblr media
This is a cool room. Love the shelving, but I don't have a piano, so it would be a library or plant room.
Tumblr media
Like the guest powder room. It looks castle-like.
Tumblr media
The dining room is tasteful, but I'm not really into it.
Tumblr media
The everyday dining space is in an alcove off the dining room. I like this, better, b/c of the ceiling.
Tumblr media
Off the everyday dining alcove is a porch. Love the skylight and windows.
Tumblr media
Kitchen's nice, but a little dark. Look at how far apart the "work triangle" is, though.
Tumblr media
It's hard to believe that this is the primary bedroom. It's long and opens to a terrace, but I expected something more attractive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The en-suite is all done up. I kind of like the crown motif wallpaper.
Tumblr media
Very nice closet looks newly constructed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These 2 secondary bedrooms look nicer than the primary.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Love this bath.
Tumblr media
Another bedroom with a terrace.
Tumblr media
View from one of the terraces.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at how cool the basement is. Looks like a real rathskeller.
Tumblr media
Back room, maybe a spare/guest bedroom w/its own entrance?
Tumblr media
Beautiful deck out back.
Tumblr media
Gorgeous pool.
Tumblr media
Lovely gardens on a .51 acre lot.
Tumblr media
3 car garage and a back porch.

How far we've come!
by Chloe Foor, Student Historian 2022/2023
As the semester has wound to a close, I find myself reflecting on just how much I’ve done since starting as a Student Historian in Residence back in July. I have had the opportunity to research the history of the LGBTQ+ community in Madison, dive through the archives, discovering the exact moment where queer UW students announced that they would not be invisible any more, and have had the opportunity to interview three prominent activists in the city’s history, and all of whom used their spirituality to empower themselves.
The first person I interviewed was the wonderful Becca Bedell, a recent graduate of UW’s MFA in poetry program. They worked with PresHouse, the Presbyterian ministry on campus, to preach queer theology, as well as found the group Queerly Beloved, a place where students can find support related to their spirituality, sexuality, gender, or even simply find a friend. It was wonderful to talk with Becca, and I am so excited to be able to publish my interview with them so that you can hear all of their incredible insights on faith, gender, sexuality, and life in general.
The next person I interviewed was Ken Scott, a UW graduate and  a member of Integrity/Dignity, a group for queer Christians. This interview was the only one that I have conducted in person so far, the others were done using a program called TheirStory, which is similar to Zoom but is made specifically for oral histories. I had two oral history sessions with Ken (he had a lot of incredible stories and we wanted to make sure that we got all of them down). The first session was in a conference room in St. Francis House, an Episcopal church on University Avenue. St. Francis House has a lot of historic value for the LGBTQ+ community in Madison, as it is where the Madison Alliance for Homosexual Equality first met, as well as a place where Integrity/Dignity met a lot. It was amazing to be in a place with such history, and Ken loved the homecoming. Huge thank you to Mother B. at St. Francis House for letting us use your space!
View an image of Ken Scott (left) and his partner Brian Bigler (right) during their Holy Union Ceremony in 1995 from the Wisconsin Historical Society.
The most recent interview I conducted was with Rich Fluechtling, an incredibly influential person in the United Church of Christ’s acceptance of gay people, and a participant in some of the earliest activism in Madison, such as the MAGIC picnic in Brittingham Park. Though he now lives in California, he spent 51 years of his life in Madison, most of it associated with First Congregational, the UCC church closest to campus. Through his work, it became the 76th UCC church to be called “Open and Affirming,” the designation used to signify its openness towards the LGBTQ+ community.
Fluechtling is pictured on the website as a member of the Board of Directors & Leaders of the UCC Southern California Nevada Conference.
After these three oral histories, I started looking for more people to conduct interviews with, as I want as many as possible so as to give a variety of perspectives on how UW students have navigated spirituality and queerness. I was having trouble finding people to interview, but then I thought of reaching out to the GSCC to see if any current students might be interested in telling their story. I posted on the “Spiritual Queers” Discord channel, and a few people have already reached out to me that they might be interested in helping! I am also planning on emailing various clubs and organizations to ask if I might be able to talk about the project during a meeting! That being said, if anyone reading this thinks that they might like to do an oral history and are queer, have been impacted by religion in some way, and are affiliated with UW, please shoot me an email at [email protected]!
In the meantime, I have spent some time in the archives, going through Daily Cardinal articles from the early 1970s, when the LGBTQ+ community really first started making themselves known on campus. Whenever I find something interesting, I scan it. My eventual hope is that I can publish these on a website as a sort of collection of early queer history at UW!
Speaking of the website, I have recently been given access to the Wordpress account of the archives website! I am looking forward to creating a platform to share my project, and have it be more accessible to people, maybe even people outside of UW! I also hope to create a page where every future Student Historian will be able to publish their own research!
I am very excited to see what the new year brings for this project! Thank you for following me on my journey :)

The ultimate sacrifice, three times over
By Jonathan Monfiletto
Tumblr media
According to the Civil War monument that stands in Courthouse Park in the vicinity of the Yates County Courthouse and county office building, 2,109 people from Yates County served in the military during the Civil War – out of a population in 1860 of 20,290 or a little more than 10 percent of the residents here at the time.
Of those 2,109 people, approximately 200 – another 10 percent, this time of those who served – died during the war, according to Penn Yan and How It Got That Way, by Frances Dumas.
And of the families of those 200 people, possibly none suffered more than the family of Romeo and Rachel Gaylord, of Bellona. The family sent three sons off to fight in the conflict between the North and the South – the rebellion, as contemporary newspaper reports often called it – and two of their sons died during their service while the third was wounded during the war.
I began to learn this family’s story when I went for a walk through the Bellona Cemetery one day earlier this summer and came across the Gaylord family gravestone there. The gravestone tells quite a story if you take the time to listen to it.
The marker lists parents Romeo and Rachel on the front of its four sides; Romeo died in 1867 at age 66, while Rachel lived to be 90 years old. Another side lists daughters Amanda and Emily, who both died in childhood at age 7 and less than a year old, respectively. A third side lists son Charles W., who died at age 25 in the Battle of Gettysburg while serving as a private with Co. B of the 126th New York Volunteers, along with daughter Lydia A. Cooper, who died at age 51 in 1891. The final side lists son Oliver C., who died at age 31 in St. Louis while serving as a private in Co. G of the 3rd Michigan Cavalry, along with son Benjamin F., who died at age 37 in Mississippi in 1872. He had been a corporal with Co. H of the 102nd New York Volunteers during the Civil War; whether he was still serving the military at the time of his death, I haven’t been able to determine.
A letter to the editor in the March 3, 1864 edition of the Yates County Chronicle titled “An Afflicted Family” and signed “A Friend” adds more details to the story already told by the gravestone. “There are so many cases of affliction all over our land – caused by this most unholy war and about which so much has been said – that it sems almost like needless repetition to speak of others; but finding that the patriotism of this family is worthy of at least a passing notice, I have ventured, although unaccustomed to writing for the public prints, to state the simple facts in regard to them,” the letter begins its tribute to the Gaylord family.
Friend notes the Gaylord family “has been long and favorably known by many who will peruse this notice,” before he tells of the fates of the three sons called away by military service during the war. Oliver, the eldest son, had resided in Michigan “for several years past,” according to the letter, and enlisted in Co. G. of the 3rd Michigan Cavalry in October 1861. Six months later, in April 1862, he died of chronic diarrhea in St. Louis, having never been in battle.
Frank – as Benjamin F. seems to have been called – the next eldest son, enlisted in Co. H of the 102nd Regiment in December 1861 and was wounded in August 1862 at the Battle of Cedar Mountain in Culpeper County, Virginia. The wound was enough to disable him from further service during the war, and he was discharged in October 1862. It seems he returned to the family property in Bellona, at least for a period of time.
Charles enlisted in August 1862 – August 8, in fact, just a day before Frank was injured on August 9 – in Co. B of the 126th Regiment. He was killed in July 1863 during the Battle of Gettysburg, the northernmost battle of the war but not the only battle to take place outside of the Confederacy.
“And we have the fullest assurance that the two [Oliver and Charles] who have been ‘relieved from duty,’ were well prepared to report to the head-quarters of the Captain of their Salvation,” Friend concludes his letter.
According to Census records, the Gaylord family had at least two other sons – Byron, who was 13 in 1855, and Edward, who was 8 at that time – and at least one other daughter, Elizabeth, who was 21 in 1855. In 1855, the Gaylord family is listed in Torrey, but in 1865 the family is listed in Benton.
Frank’s gravestone indicates he died in Mississippi in 1872. Though I have been unable to find any further information, other than Frank married his wife in New York and they bore their son in Mississippi, I wonder if Frank had somehow re-enlisted in the military and served as part of the occupation of the South during Reconstruction and then somehow died during this service.
Perhaps this was another sacrifice made by the Gaylord family – a family who had already witnessed so much sacrifice and heartache during the Civil War.
