First we start at, and before, the beginning; with a look at Season 1, Episode 1: Premiere, and some highlights from its years of development.

So I was going to do a post where I said they should make a Mass Effect show where we follow a normal Spectre as they solve exciting-space crimes, but then, omg!, that's just the 90s movie / TV show Alien Nation that no one but me remembers.

I wasn't even sure I remembered it properly so I looked at the Wikipedia page:

I assume that is the same guy who did another obscure little sci-fi show that reminds me a lot of Mass Effect?

I'm halfway through Farscape season 1 and I keep thinking it would be really cool if there was a fanfic where Crichton's father and DK somehow get the little messages he records for them throughout the show (I don't know if he gets back to Earth and I'm trying really hard to avoid spoilers). Assuming he doesn't get back like, what if his recorder thing somehow ended up on Earth? And it's just his childhood friend and his dad listening to these messages from their missing assumed dead best friend/son. And the fic is just their reactions to it. And then maybe Crichton eventually makes it back and that hope that was given to them by the messages is proven to be true and he's alive. Or worse, they get the messages and because of it they get a spark of hope that maybe he's still out there. Maybe he isn't dead. And they wait and they listen, just in case one day he makes his way back home. But he never does. And they are left to wait with this faint bit of hope that lessens over the years but never fully goes away because he could be out there somewhere. And they are left wondering for the rest of their lives.
