It was late afternoon, grey, wet, and moody when we arrived in the hot spring town of Misasa Onsen in Tottori Prefecture. And we were all pretty bushed. Still, that was nothing that a good soak or two in the onsen waters couldn't sort out.
Waking up the next morning to the early autumn sun poking through the mountain mist was a proper treat and we couldn't wait to get out for a wander around town.
This fruit is just about the only high-nutrient consumable left in Midwestern forests by this time of year. Many animals use these berries to sustain themselves through the bitterness of winter.
