“Gave Blood For Her Sister,” Toronto Globe. November 1, 1909. Page 1. --- Mrs. T. R. Carnovosky of Kingston Undergoes Operation at Montreal ---- Kingston, Oct. 30. - In Montreal in the Royal Victoria Hospital Mrs. T. R. Carnovosky of Kingston gave a quart of her life blood to her sister, Mrs. Eli Williamson of Lindsay, in the hope of prolonging her life after an operation.
She was laid on a table and had her radial artery opened and attached to a vein in her sister’s right arm. For two hours less fifteen minutes, she remained in that position, allowing her blood to pass to her sister. She did not take an anesthetic.
The new blood resuscitated Mrs. Williamson to such an extent that she was able to undergo a second operation three days later, but although she came through the operation she died of shock next day.

On September 30th 2023, tomorrow on Truth and Reconciliation Day, and Every Child Matters Day, the Kahnistensera (Mohawk Mothers) will be holding a protest with McGill students at the Royal Victoria Hospital starting at 12PM.
Background information for the cause: There is credible evidence for the Mohawk mothers in question to believe their children have unmarked graves on the grounds of the RVH, where their children disappeared following human experimentation conducted on them by the Allan Memorial Institute on that site. The superior court has granted injunctions for the grieving mothers and their organization to investigate the grounds before McGill decides to build on top of the unmarked graves, as then it would be desecrating sacred ground. McGill University has broken the law multiple times by pursuing construction on the site despite credible preliminary evidence of human remains beneath the soil.

Sailor's sweetheart pin cushions
These are small pincushions that have been richly decorated. Often these cushions were heart-shaped and embroidered with different fabrics, beads, small mirrors, words and pictures.
Tumblr media
A 'Forget Me Not' sweetheart cushion, the satin cushion of heart shape applied with cigarette silks within a glass beadwork ground and fringed edge, late 19th century (x)
They were usually filled with sand or wood chips. These cushions were made at sea and sent home to the sweetheart as a love token.
Tumblr media
Cushion made by Mr W. A. Parish, while he was in the Royal Hospital Chelsea, 1914-1918 (x)
Tumblr media
An unusual pin in the shape of an anchor, decorated with Union Jacks, sailing ships, anchors, pictures of Queen Victoria and a sewn-in text; 'With Best Wishes', late 19th century (x)
The piercing with needles symbolises the heartache he felt because he was not at home. These heart-shaped pillows were at their peak from the middle of the 19th century until after WWII.

disclaimer: credits to original creator/poster of image/gif. found on Google/Pinterest. The women in the banners are not how Y/N is supposed to look. They are merely for aesthetic purposes and Y/N is written vaguely enough for anyone to see themselves in her.
John is sewing up Victoria’s hand as she grimaces and swallows the entire bottle of Vodka in one gulp. Niklaus, on the other hand, is frantically pacing the room, wearing ruts into the floor. John tries to get him to stop or slow down even but he refuses.
“We’re fucked, absolutely fucked,” he mummers under his breath.
Victoria practically growls as John pulls at the stitches to tie them off before snapping at her brother, “Of course we are. We let that bastard take Y/N.”
John looks to Niklaus nervously and then back to Victoria.
“Oh my god, what did you two idiots do?” “Nothing, we did nothing,” Niklaus snaps back at her.
“No, you did something. Tell me or I’ll throw you both through the window.”
John spills almost instantly, “Klaus made a deal with him last year.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me!” she shrieks.
Niklaus rushes over to her and quickly puts his hand over her mouth to silence her, “Shut up for the love of god. I’ll tell you if you promise to not say anything. Brock is literally down the hall.”
She nods and he starts in with the tale of how he might have royally fucked up.
About a year and half ago, Brock caught him and another man together and beat Niklaus to a pulp. He had been laid up in the hospital for weeks and needed routine visits afterward from the injuries he sustained. In addition to being beaten within an inch of his life, Brock had threatened to kill them if he ever caught them again. That had been the final nail in the coffin for Niklaus; after years of enduring the torture that his father put him and his siblings through, he made the decision to get rid of him once and for all.
The most natural choice was the White Wolf.
He was feared across the East Coast and was gaining power rapidly. He threatened Brock’s authority in New York and it made him nervous, sketchy, and scared. Niklaus arranged a meeting with Steve, his community liaison, and set the plan in motion however it all crumbled when Brock caught wind of a rat amongst his ranks. He had Niklaus and John execute too many innocent men and he even made a move on the White Wolf’s men. He’d murdered Tony Stark, one of the White Wolf’s close friends and advisors, setting forth a domino effect of violence. He retailed as one would and with Y/N being dragged back in, it complicated things. Niklaus tried to uncomplicate it and remove her from the equation with the planned ambush at the party but he never expected that she would willingly take the deal. Hoping that she was still the stubborn teen she had been, he’d hoped that the White Wolf would have to take her against her will and keep her locked away until it was all over with.
“You are the biggest idiot I have ever met,” Victoria says with an equal amount of shock and annoyance, “Why didn’t tell me before? I could’ve helped you plan something better.”
“I didn’t want anyone else to get hurt if it all went south. I figured I could take the brunt of it while John got you to safety.”
Victoria scoffs, “So a suicide mission?”
“No.”
“Yes! You know him better than anyone. He will tear you apart limb by limb, sew you back up and do it again until he gets bored. And even then he’ll find a new way to entertain himself.”
John makes a disgruntled noise at all of her moving and says, “But if Brock’s dead, it’s all worth it.”
“No it isn’t John! You’ve been friends since birth practically and you’re seriously suggesting that him being dead is for the best? Klaus,” she pleads with her brother, “we have to find another way. Call him and find another way. Please, I can’t lose you.”
“There’s no other way. Either the White Wolf kills Brock before he can get to me or I try my hand at it and our father kills me.”
Her eyebrows furrow in pain and sadness as John finishes her hand. The moment he’s done she leaps up and wraps her arms around her brother.
Niklaus grips her back tightly ad if he’s afraid she’ll disappear into thin air and buries his face in her hair.
“You better hope Y/N figured out a better plan.”
He nods against her head.
“I love you, Klaus.”
“I love you too.”
Tumblr media
Brock loves to incite fear in everyone around him whether that be with his voice or a violence. He craves to make all those in the same room as him fear for their lives if they so much as breathed wrong and that is especially true with his children. He lives to see the terror that lives in their eyes when they see him or how their bodies go rigid when he walks past them. He wants to see them shutter when he walks too close to them. He wants them to hold their breath until he leaves. He wants them and everyone else to walk on eggshells when he is around. He wants them to fear him in every sense of the word.
Victoria’s small sniffles piss him off to no degree and he backhands her hard enough that she falls to the ground. Niklaus, ever the loyal son, only flinches at the sound of the impact and does nothing to help his sister. He knows that if he even so much as moved a muscle, he would be next.
“Can someone please explain to me how the fuck you let that bastard take Y/N?” he growls at them as he rubs the bridge of his nose.
Victoria climbs to her feet and with hit tears pooling in her eyes, she matches his anger, sneering back at him, “He knew we were going to be there. We didn’t stand a chance.”
“You had Y/N. You had every advantage I could’ve given you but somehow you two still fucked it up and killed her in the process.”
Niklaus risks his head and speaks, “She’s not dead. He took her hostage.”
Brock marches up to his son and grips his face in one bone crushing hand as he says, “That’s even worse. He can use her to get to me.”
“Y/N won’t give you up no matter how much she hates you. She wouldn’t risk Victoria and I getting hurt,” Niklaus scoffs and jerks his head away.
In a flash, Brock whips out a pistol and pushes against his forehead, “You’re useless, you know that? I’ve done nothing but provide for you and give you everything you could ever want. Still you fuck up and prove to me that you’re only ever going to be a thorn in my side. Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t put a bullet in you and Victoria.”
Victoria makes a startled gasp and lunges at her brother in efforts to push the gun away but John grabs her and holds one of his own to her temple. She whispers insults under her breath and curses him for being “a fucking traitor and a bastard.” Niklaus looks at her for guidance because he’s a loss for words. There’s nothing he could say that wouldn’t get someone hurt. She shakes her head as much as she can, urging him to not say anything. The one piece of information he can give their father to save them would end with Y/N’s head on a platter but it’s all he has to offer.
“Nik please,” she whispers with even more tears in her eyes.
“I don’t have a choice.”
“Nik you always have a choice. Don’t do this please. Él la matará.”
He will kill her.
“Don’t speak that shit in my house,” Brock growls at her, “Try again and this time peak English.”
She pleads with her brother again in Spanish, earning another growl but with the gun against both of their heads, he has to do something. Giving away himself would ruin any chance at catching Brock off guard in the future so he goes the only thing he can.
Niklaus tears his eyes away and locks eyes with his father as he utters Y/N’s death sentence, “She made a deal with him; in exchange for our lives, she helps him kill you.”
“Is that so?” Brock asks, cocking his head in amusement before turning to look at Victoria, “I think I might have to send a message to that brat if that’s the case.” One shot.
And a body drops.
Tumblr media
Steve chooses to grab Y/N by her hair this time, keeping his hand wrapped in her braid so that he has complete control of her. The White Wolf gives him a disapproving look but doesn’t say anything as they walk into a looming and dark house. Matching the exterior, the house is black and sleek with no hint of personality anywhere to be found. It looks very much like a house that a mob boss would buy to launder his money and she assumes that this is the case.
“Stop gawking,” Steve tells her with a harsh tug of her hair and she hisses at the pain. The White Wolf looks back and motions for Steve to bring her forward.
Taking her arm in his like a pretend gentleman, he explains that until Brock is dead, she will be staying with him. She’s not to leave and if she does, she needs to have explicit permission from him and a security detail will go with her. Steve smirks when her eyes flicker over to him, indicating that he will be the spearhead of that detail. The White Wolf saying her name brings her attention back to him and continues to explain that the house is hers, she has free reign as long as she stays within its walls. He stops them at a door at the end of a hallway, “This is my office…”
She interrupts him, “And it’s off limits. I know the drill.”
He smiles, looking her up and down while he wets his lips, “Smart girl.”
A part of her shutters in disgust but another….
“How much time do you need?”
“What?” she questions, searching his face for any hint of explanation.
“It’s been six years since you left home so I’m assuming you need some time to figure out a plan. How much time do you need?”
“You make it seem like I left on good terms,” she mumbles, shrinking under his intense gaze.
He chuckles, “Sorry, RAN AWAY.”
She sighs and looks around her, “He’s living in one of his old properties so I already know how to get in and out. It really depends on how quickly you can get me what I need.”
“And that is?”
“How do you want it done?” He takes a moment to think about it as he pushes open his office door and leads her inside. Steve closes the door, locking just the two of them inside. The White Wolf pours both of them a glass of whiskey and hands one to her before taking a seat on a massive leather couch. However with him and his overwhelming presence on it, it looks child sized. He motions for her to sit in a chair across from him and she hestiants but he insists.
“That’s up to you, little snake. You want him to suffer, right?” he asks as he takes a sip, wincing at the blissful feeling of the burn.
“Don’t turn this on me,” she pauses, realizing that she only knows him by his alias,  “I don’t know your name.”
“My name?” “That’s what I just said.”
He narrows his eyes at her before giving her the answer she seeks, “James.”
“Don’t turn this on me, JAMES. It’s not about what I want, this is about your little fight with him,” she snarks at him, “The only reason why I’m involved is because of opportunity. You saw a chance to get back at him for whatever reason and preyed on me because of my past with him.”
James reclines in his seat, allowing himself to enjoy her anger and admire her in the process.
“Did he tell you what this is all about?”
“No but I don’t exactly care either. All men have an ego the size of the sun and turn to violence when it gets bruised.”
He chokes on his drink at her appraisal but agrees nonetheless, “Fair enough. So what do you need?”
“I’ll need a Beretta M9A4 with a silencer, an M4, and a set of knives.”
“Strange list, anything else?”
“A getaway car and a driver.”
“I’ll have Sam do it.”
“Hm,” she stops him after taking a sip of her drink, “No, I don’t trust him.”
“I really don’t think trust should be something you’re worrying about right now.”
Y/N slips her heels off and draws her legs onto the chair with her, getting as comfortable as she can to level a bored look at him. James takes in her form as she’s curled into herself and he wets his lips with his tongue.
“Who do you want then?”
“Steve.”
A beat passes.
“Or you.”
He questions her with a smirk as he slides through down into the leather couch. He’s lounging at this point, completely ignoring the fact they’re discussing murder.
“Me?”
“I don’t trust any of your men and most certainly not you but you wouldn’t do anything to put me in harm’s way if you’re involved.”
His phone rings and he picks it up, eyes never leaving hers, “Hello?”
She can’t make out what the other person is saying but she can tell they’re frantic. James lets out an annoyed sigh and closes his eyes as his head hits the back of the couch, mumbling along as the person on the other side rambles on and on. His attention being off of her gives her the opportunity to really look at him.
Eyes taking over him, Y/N takes in the way his midnight blue suit compliments his eyes and how his white shirt underneath is unbuttoned in an absurdly attractive manner. Just under his suit jacket is a hint of leather, a holster she assumes given what little she knows of him.
“He’s not going to do anything and even if he did, I have people close by.”
The sheer dismissive tone brings her back to his face where she locks eyes with him. He must have lifted his head when she wasn’t looking and was most certainly watching her checking him out. She finishes the rest of her drink and sets the empty glass on the coffee table between them.
“Încetează. Seriously calm down and use your brain, Klaus. He’s not going to do anything stupid. If he did, he would ruin any chance of survival he has. ”
She gives him a questioning look and he winks at her instead of explaining.
When he hangs up, she immediately jumps into her line of questions to which he explains that her brother has been working with him for some time now.
“Klaus? As in my brother Niklaus? He’s helping you?”
“He came to me last year and asked if I would help him with… some business.”
“Why did you make a deal with me if you already had one with my brother?”
“It never hurts to have multiple options.”
She groans in frustration and rubs at her temples. Of course she would’ve been suckered into some farce of a deal by a shady businessman. The temptation to throw something at him becomes too strong and she hurls one of her heels at him. It misses and clatters to the ground behind him to which he chuckles at and gets to his feet. His shoes scuffle the floor as he pours himself another glass. Rather than sitting back in his original place, James rounds the coffee table and sits in front of her on it.
“Brock would see it coming if I had Klaus do it regardless of how good your brother thinks he is. You, on the other hand,” he starts, pointing at her, “are the perfect option. He still has hope that you’ll find it in your heart to love daddy again so you still have a chance to gain his trust hence why I brought you here. Taking you away from him builds the tension, makes him sweat, makes him vulnerable and reckless. It puts him in the perfect position for me to release you back to him and boom my Rumlow problem is gone.”
“You still haven’t told me what he did.”
James leans forward so he’s invading her space, “It didn’t seem important a minute ago.”
Y/N matches him and leans forward too, “Well it is now. What did he do?”
“He killed a very good friend of mine.”
“You have friends?” She laughs at him and before she can stop him, he grips her braid again and pulls her off the chair and onto the ground before him.
He yanks her towards him and whispers in her ear, “Learn when to stop, little snake. It’s unbecoming of you.”
She glares him with all the hatred she feels for men like him but it flatters when his eyes flicker from hers to her lips parted due to the pain in her scalp.
"You look good on your knees for me," he lets spill out before releasing her.
She knows that he meant for it to come out but nonetheless she throws herself back as far as she can to get away from him. James, the flirty and seemingly harmless man is gone and in his place the White Wolf reemerges. He smirks at her desperate attempt to put space between them and winks at her again, this time making her body revolt at the gesture. Standing, he leaves the room without another word to her.
Whatever safety and trust she hoped to gain tonight is gone the moment he closes that door.
She’s alone.
Completely and utterly alone.

The term “woman” should not be “eradicated from our language in order to be inclusive and welcoming”, the Health Secretary has said as she announced plans to overhaul the NHS constitution to “ensure that biological sex is respected”.
Victoria Atkins said changes to the NHS Constitution will ensure language used in the health service is “clear” so that pregnant women are not referred to as “service users” to bolster inclusivity.
The Department of Health and Social Care said it is “defining sex as biological sex” with the new document, which underpins NHS care.
Proposed changes will also ensure hospital patients in England have the right to request to be treated on single-sex wards, with transgender people placed in rooms on their own.
But the British Medical Association warned the proposed changes could mean transgender and non-binary patients “potentially find their access to vital NHS services limited” while the Royal College of Nursing said changes to health policy should be done with patients “not unto them”.
Officials said that the update “is about putting patients first” and includes plans to accommodate requests for same-sex intimate care.
Ms Atkins told Sky News: “We have said in the consultation that we would like language to be clear.
“We know that in some parts of the NHS some language is used which is meant with the best of intentions to include, be inclusive, but it can, I think, also actually exclude people.”
She added: “For example, I visited a wonderful maternity unit recently full of warmth and joy and happiness with wonderful members of staff, but they were talking about ‘service users’ and I realised after a while they meant women or mums-to-be or mothers – the language that we would use in conversation when talking about someone having a baby.
“So that sort of language … we shouldn’t have to eradicate women from our language in order to be inclusive and welcoming.
“If somebody walks in and they want to have a specific phrase or term used, of course we respect that, but it’s also about ensuring that biological sex is respected.”
She told Times Radio: “There will be listeners who are worried about the fact that they see articles in the paper about ‘chestfeeding’ and language such as that.
“We want language to be clear and make sense to people.”
Under the planned revisions, transgender people could be placed in a room on their own if another patient requests to be in a single-sex ward.
This would be permitted under the Equality Act 2010 when appropriate, “such as respecting a patient’s wish to be in a single-sex ward”, Government officials said.
In October, former health secretary Steve Barclay said he would look into changing the constitution to address concerns about trans women using wards intended for biologically female patients.
Ms Atkins told Sky News: “We want to ensure that biological sex is respected and that if someone wants, for example, to have an intimate examination by a person of the same biological sex, then they can make that request and it is dealt with appropriately, and with respect and recognising that person’s right to privacy and dignity and safety.”
She said in a statement: “We have always been clear that sex matters and our services should respect that.
“By putting this in the NHS Constitution we’re highlighting the importance of balancing the rights and needs of all patients to make a healthcare system that is faster, simpler and fairer for all.”
Maya Forstater, chief executive of Sex Matters, a human rights charity that campaigns for clarity on sex in law, policy and language, said: “Victoria Atkins explicitly referring to biological sex is very significant.
“It will benefit anyone who needs same-sex intimate care in the NHS in England, or who may do so in the future.
“We can expect an outraged response from trans rights activists, but this is simply a return to common sense, and an overdue recognition that women’s wellbeing and safety matter.”
Shadow health secretary Wes Streeting said “rights on paper are worthless unless they are delivered in practice”.
He added: “The NHS Constitution already pledges that no patient will have to share an overnight ward with patients of the opposite sex, but that is not the case for too many patients.
“Labour supports single-sex wards and will provide the staff, investment and reform the NHS needs to make sure every patient can be cared for safely.”
Professor Nicola Ranger, chief nursing officer and deputy chief executive of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), said: “Trans and non-binary patients are deserving of high-quality care like any other patient and changes to health policy should be done with them, not unto them.”
Dr Emma Runswick, deputy chairwoman of the British Medical Association (BMA) council, warned some changes “run the risk of causing more harm than good – with the potential to incite further discrimination, harassment and ostracisation of an already marginalised group”.
“If these proposed changes come into effect, transgender and non-binary patients will potentially find their access to vital NHS services limited,” she added.
The NHS Constitution outlines the rights of patients and staff and is updated every 10 years.
Other proposed changes, which are subject to an eight-week consultation, include committing to providing families with a second opinion when a patient’s condition is deteriorating.
The rollout of the escalation process, also known as Martha’s Rule, started earlier this month and follows the death of 13-year-old Martha Mills in 2021.
She developed sepsis after suffering a pancreatic injury following a fall from her bike.
Martha’s parents, Merope Mills and Paul Laity, raised concerns about their daughter’s health a number of times but these were brushed aside.
A coroner ruled she would most likely have survived if doctors had identified the warning signs of her rapidly deteriorating condition and transferred her to intensive care earlier.
The new constitution will also reinforce the health service’s commitment to unpaid carers and will aim to reduce inequalities in access among different groups.

A headline like this would have been unthinkable, or an element of some absurdist comedy, ten years ago. Now that's the world we live in.
That sex is actually real, and "sex" means "biological sex" (as if there's any other kind) is "HUGE news" shows how far society has fallen.
Trans and "nonbinary" people are still male or female. Their access is exactly the same as for any other male or female person. How you "identify" doesn't change the reality of your biology. Pretending otherwise is idiotic. (And don't we keep hearing that "gender" and sex are separate?)

y’know, I somewhat recall you saying you had your own J&H adaptation, Any fun facts about it itself or J&H? (You give me asks I’ll give you one right back)
Hello, although I only have the 0,1% completed which is like, a summary of eight/nine months of work, I am still very excited to share my little alternative universe; it takes inspiration from many other adaptations, mainly the musical and The Glass Scientists. A lot of things are placeholders for something bigger and completely original, and it's supposed to blend with actual history, meaning that in some way it is historically accurate at some extent, considering I am making extensive researches about the Victorian Era and how it works, with the help of books and articles online. It's quite hard to make it 100% accurate of course, but most Jekyll and Hyde adaptations tend to ignore the fact that this is set in a very specific period of time, and they also tend to focus more on which character sucks the most dicks rather than the original message(s) of the novella. I don't like stories which solely focus on the characters being queer and that's clear, and while LGBTQ+ is included in Apotheosis, that doesn't mean that its the main focus; sure, it is talked about, but it's a part of the story and not the main story. I'm not saying that there should be a correct way of writing adaptations, but rather, that the world should feel alive and dynamic. It is important to establish worldbuilding, and make it a present part of the story, because it SHAPES the characters. I think that whilst you do not need a degree in history to write about J&H or the victorian era, it's important to know at least the basics of how the society worked, the advancements and how they affected society, etc.
Now, the victorian era is quite interesting when it comes to progress. In 1879 the first psychology laboratory was established in Germany, and many other advances in medicine were made, there were the first feminist movements, the two industrial revolutions (second in 1870-1914), what I'm trying to say is that the 19th century is a very important period of our time, at least for eurocentric history, and it's so curious to think how some of these inventions are just two centuries old. Not to mention that by 1888, the Bloody Code (which was how the severe law system of England was called, which focused on social punishment rather than rehabilitation, and the death penalty was very common even for lesser crimes by public execution) had been largely replaced and the death penalty wasn't in use anymore. The world was changing and advancing, and what does that mean for the most conservative classes, especially those who were in high favor to such horrible practices, especially when towards the lower and most despised classes? What does it mean for the poor and ostracized, especially considering the precarious conditions of orphanages, poorhouses and such? Fun fact: this was one of the battles the Crown itself, or rather, Queen Victoria, as a woman and mother, advocated for this, especially when most of its components were children, which were there for various reasons. And what about the emerging middle classes, the so despised noveau nobillty?
Medicine was both revered and feared, because while advancements were made in medical science, many treatments were still primitive and often painful. Additionally, the lack of understanding about germs and proper sanitation led to high mortality rates in hospitals, contributing to a general fear and distrust of medical practices among the public; not to mention that writers were starting to talk about the dangers of medicine (ex. Frankenstein), not to mention that there was the Royal Society that, while it promoted scientific inquiry, knowledge and collaboration, it certainly would've found itself debating about the inclusion of rogue science as effectively, a science.
It is important to know the rest of the hystorical context in which Apotheosis finds itself in, which is that of a very important migration of citizens from Ireland to London (including jews who were fleeing from the pogroms, popular riots against religious minorities which were happening in the Russian Empire), and all of them gathered in the East End of London, where Whitechapel was. It didn't take long for overpopulation (which was already a recurring issue in London) to happen, and for Whitechapel to be redeemed a generally unsafe place like all the other slums, not to mention all the popular disorders and the increase of violent repression from the London Metropolitan Police (ex. Bloody Sunday, which caused at least two deaths, it was basically a manifestation in which the Social Democratic Federation advocated for the end of unemployment, better working conditions and a right to vote for all adult men, other than supporting the Irish National League against the oppression the british were putting them through); it's in this context, that from august-november of 1888, Jack the Ripper terrifies London; 16 are the suspected victims, 5 the ones which had been confirmed, but what if I told you that there is actually more to this tale, when people thought that the Ripper was still amongst them due to how ineffective the police system was at the time, and that some murders associated with him weren't actually the Ripper's doing?
General Lord Glossop, a member of the council which oversees the Royal Society, was found dead after attending the funeral of His Grace, the Bishop of Basingstoke. The body was found the next morning, January 1889; the method of killing appeared to be strangulation as confirmed by trained medical professionals. This was the second governor who happened to die under mysterious circumstances which, were associated with the Ripper itself, as the methods were basically the same. On December 1888, the body of an unidentified underage prostitute and the terribly mutilated corpse of His Grace, the Bishop of Basingstoke, were found in the streets of a London slum, following the same criteria of that which seemed to reflect that of Jack the Ripper.
A member of the Marchetti family, Miss. Maia Marchetti, requested an immediate revision of the autopsies to prove that the killer wasn't Jack The Ripper, but rather another unnamed man who yet had to be caught; she founded her thesis on the two, crucial facts that the murderer had only ever killed members of the aristocracy and one single prostitute for the sole fact that she could've potentially acted as a witness for the case, and there wasn't any fury exhibited towards her corpse, and Thomas Bond (profilier of Jack The Ripper) stated that the Ripper didn't have any anatomical knowledge, and the body appeared to have been mutilated with such a precision which could only belong to those with a great anatomical knowledge, possibly a doctor.
On another note, she had managed to gather ten prostitutes together, who worked in the same zones where the homicides happened, to declare in a written letter to Scotland Yard, that an unknown, violent and unpleasant man with an odd fascination with sadomasochism, had been with them. However, this request was denied, and the letter archieved, until the inspector on the case Scott Newcomen presented the same thesis, thus obtaining a revised autopsy report, this time conducted by Dr. Hastie Lanyon, who brought some interesting discoveries to the table. It is important to note to the case that, the two men had died because of a basilar skull fracture, while the prostitute seemed to truly have died because of strangulation, like it had already been ascertained.
Due to the sheer brutality of the murders and the fact that they involved members of the aristocracy, the media was following this case with great attention, and reporting on it extensively (and of course great pressure was put on the authorities to solve the crimes quickly). Considering that this man happened to principally target members of the upper classes who had a significant role in society, save if there were any eye-witnesses, speculations that these might be murders made for socio-politic reasons committed by a member of the lower classes, seeing the location and circumstances, caused heightened tensions between social classes.
Other members of the council, such as Lady Beaconsfield and Sir Archibald Proops, perished under the same circumstances. An interesting parallelism is that many unreliable letters were sent to Scotland Yard and to Central News Agency; some were written by well-intentioned citizens, providing information towards the capture of the killer; however, the majority of them were deemed useless and consequently ignored. Hundreds of letters were written by people claiming to be the killer, and although this letter wasn't redeemed important and considered a fake, and consequently scrapped, a letter had been signed with the name Edward Hyde. And that's how people started to identify the man. Another letter described the man as someone who had a rancid aura around him, with an area of deformity which couldn't be quite explained by any actual malformations; he had long, golden locks. And unfortunately, these were the only small details which also happened to have been confirmed in the first letters those ten prostitutes wrote. A first rough identi-kit and criminal profile was made by Dr. Hastie Lanyon.
The slayings were the handiwork of a solitary individual, a robust young man aged between eighteen and twenty-three, possessed of a brazen yet unflappable demeanor, bearing obscure physical anomalies difficult to discern. Though yet too youthful to grace the circles of high society, Edward Hyde presented himself in attire befitting a gentleman of esteem, maintaining habitual visits to dens of iniquity, whilst displaying a remarkable acumen in matters anatomical, suggestive of a scholarly pursuit, perhaps that of the medical sciences.
The fact that it was clearly a member of the aristocracy seemingly fell deaf to the ears of the media, which constantly sidetracked the police investigations, misleading them and accusing innocents of being Edward Hyde and fabricating evidence with the excuse of pursuing justice, when in reality this just caused more social disadvantages and disorders which ended with popular uprisings; an interesting phenomenon to note, is that of many women sent romantic letters to those who were suspected to be Edward Hyde, and many visited the locations in which the murders happened in hopes of meeting the Prince of Disaster.

Hiring high-ranking Nazis to test new torture methods on prisoners was only the beginning, however. By 1953, CIA scientists like Schreiber and Sidney Gottlieb—the titular character of Stephen Kinzer’s book, Poisoner in Chief—had initiated a sprawling two-decade campaign of reckless human experimentation best known by the codename MK-ULTRA. A quixotic but well-funded hunt for truth serums, brainwashing drugs, and other mind control techniques, MK-ULTRA scientists subjected countless non-consenting and/or otherwise vulnerable people to powerful drugs and interrogation techniques. In spite of being subject to three separate government investigations, only a small fraction of the total program has been publicly disclosed since the CIA shredded nearly all relevant documents. What little we do know, however, is horrifying. With the help of OSS veteran and federal narcotics detective George Hunter White, Gottlieb maintained a network of domestic and international “safe houses” where he would administer LSD to unwitting and “expendable” subjects such as petty criminals and drug users. Sometimes, Gottlieb’s expendable subjects included other scientists, such as bacteriologist Frank Olson, who was dosed with LSD and allegedly murdered by CIA, supposedly because of fears that he would reveal America’s use of chemical and biological weapons (CBW). The Agency has had more than its share of CBW-use allegations beginning in this period, including the open-air testing of aerosolized biological agents in New York City and spreading whooping cough on the coast of Florida in 1955. MK-ULTRA research was also conducted at university laboratories, such as those of Harold Wolff and Louis Jolyon West at Cornell Medical College and the University of Oklahoma, or Donald Ewen Cameron at McGill University in Montreal. Between 1957 and 1963, Cameron used CIA money to develop psychological “depatterning” techniques on approximately one hundred patients. These techniques included placing patients in extended drug-induced comas, LSD dosing for months at a time, electro-shock treatments, and forcing patients to listen to recorded messages such as “my mother hates me” played on a loop. A multi-million dollar class action lawsuit against McGill, the Canadian government, and the Royal Victoria Hospital on behalf of Cameron’s victims and their families is currently underway. MK-ULTRA later found a home in existing networks set up by scientific institutions and universities in the USA and Canada.

Is there any more story about Philip's children with Princess Alice? I'm curious about the stories of their grandmother's and grandchildren's interactions.
• “When at Buckingham Palace, Alice doted on Philip’s children, Charles and Anne. They both profess considerable affection for her. To Charles Alice used to say: ‘Punctuality is the prerogative of Princes.’ The Prince of Wales recalled: ‘She used to come and lunch with us in the nursery, I remember. We were terrified if we were late. She was very strict.’ She did not discuss religion with either of them, nor ever mention her favourite Schuré book, Les Grands Initiés. ‘I remember her lecturing me about the power of the brain,’ recalled the Prince of Wales.
The Princess Royal did not regret the fact that Alice was not ‘a cuddly granny’. She was a little alarmed by her in early years, because no one, not least Alice herself, had explained the deafness. Therefore she would come and see her grandmother in her rooms on the second floor of the palace (rooms which she later occupied), finding her in a cloud of smoke – ‘I’ve known a few worse, I suppose, but not many’ – and have to gain her attention. Later, when she learned how to talk to her, they established a good rapport. To both grandchildren Alice told fascinating stories about Queen Victoria and the past.”
• “Alice was in London, staying with the Queen, while Philip was away on a two-month tour of South America. Charles welcomed a visit from his Greek grandmother, especially as she often brought stamps from Greece. He once wrote to her with a request for a postcard. He asked that she ‘pretty well fill up the card with stamps and not worry so much about the writing part’. These were good for swapping at his prep school, Cheam.
Charles was recovering from an operation to remove his appendix, so Alice paid him frequent visits in hospital, sometimes taking Anne and Andrew with her.”
• “For a time she travelled about much as before, spending weekends at Windsor Castle. It was the time when the royal family all got to know her best, including the Queen, who was particularly good to her. Charles and Anne were often at the palace or at Windsor and invariably looked in to see her. The small princes were taken to her rooms to play. When they were very small, she had alarmed the children with her deep voice. The Prince of Wales told his valet that as he grew older, he came to appreciate ‘her sense of fun and lively mind’. Alice was pleased that Charles played the cello, since Andrea had done so in his youth.”
• “In London Andrew and Edward played in Alice’s room after breakfast and lunched with her every day. ‘So nice for me, who am so lonely in Athens,’ she wrote. Young Edward used to run in and jump on his grandmother’s bed. Halma was a favourite game.”
• “It happened that Anne had not paid her usual visit to Alice on the day she died. She therefore asked the undertakers if she could go into her grandmother’s room and see her. ‘I am glad I did that. She looked very peaceful. All the lines in her face had gone and for the first time I could see the resemblance to the de László portrait.’”
This one though. Princess Anne’s last words for her Yaya was beautiful yet heartbreaking.
Everything is from Alice: Princess Andrew of Greece by Hugo Vickers btw. It’s a good read :)

William Angus was born 28th February 1888 at Polkemmet Rows, Cappers, Armadale.
Note some sources say this brave man was born in Carlulke, others give Armadale, he certainly spent a large chunk of his life in South Lanarkshire town. where a commemorative stone was unveiled in his honour in 2015.
On leaving school Angus worked in the nearby coal mines before earning a modest living as a footballer at several clubs, 1914 he was with Wishaw Thistle when war broke out and as a member of local Carluke Territorial battalion of the Highland Light Infantry, he was mobilised immediately.
William Angus was transferred to the 8th Royal Scots, the first Territorial battalion to join the Expeditionary Force. 8th Royal Scots had suffered a great many casualties and were in urgent need of replacements. He was serving as a lance-corporal in this battalion when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
On 12th June 1915 at Givenchy-lès-la-Bassée, France Lance-Corporal Angus voluntarily left his trench to rescue a wounded officer, fellow Carluke man Lieutenant James Martin, who was lying within a few yards of the enemy’s position and had been injured by a mine. To do this he had to travel through 64 metres in no-man’s land under heavy bomb and rifle fire, and received about 40 wounds, some of them being very serious, including the loss of his left eye, losing part of his foot and calf. His commanding officer said there had been no braver deed in the history of the army.
When asked why he had risked death to carry out such a mercy mission, he replied:
“I have to go back to Carluke. I cannot return if I left someone from Carluke to die here.”
40 wounds, can you imagine that?!
Angus was awarded the VC for his bravery in August that year at Buckingham Palace, when the King commented on his 40 injuries, Angus was said to have answered “Aye, sir, but only 13 were serious.”.
Due to his injuries he was no longer fit for active duty and was transferred to Cameronians on recruitment duties and promoted to Sergeant. He was invalided out of the Army in 1917 and started a haulage business, he later became president of Carluke Rovers, where he was known simply as “The VC”., a position he held until his death. Each year of his life, he received a telegram of thanks from the family of the man he rescued.
William Angus VC died just two days after the 44th anniversary of his brave deed. His last annual telegram of thanks from the Martin family was delivered to him in hospital.
William Angus' medals on display at the National War Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle.
You can read a wee bit more detail about William here http://www.vconline.org.uk/william-angus-vc/4585925970.html

A Québec superior court recently ruled that excavation can continue on certain parts of the site of Montréal’s former Royal Victoria Hospital. The ruling comes after a group of Indigenous women known as the Mohawk Mothers called for an emergency court hearing to halt excavations at the site.
The Mothers called for the hearing after McGill University and the Société Québécoise des Infrastructures (SQI) disbanded the court-appointed panel of Indigenous archaeologists that was set up under a settlement agreement and started construction on certain parts of the former Royal Victoria Hospital site.
In October 2022, the Mohawk Mothers obtained a temporary injunction against McGill to stop any excavations. The former Royal Victoria Hospital, vacant since 2015, was slated for an $850-million redevelopment project to expand McGill’s campus led by the SQI. It neighbours the Allan Memorial Institute, a former psychiatric hospital where American and Canadian-funded psychiatric experiments involving Indigenous children took place from 1957 to 1964.
In April, Québec’s Superior Court approved a settlement allowing the Mohawk Mothers to investigate unmarked graves at the site. The agreement states that excavation work can begin on a rolling basis if no graves are immediately found, but that it be done in a sensitive manner in case there is an unexpected discovery.
In June, specialized detection dogs discovered evidence of human remains at the site, further substantiating the Mothers’ claim. [...]

A Study in Scarlet Chapter 1
This novel was originally published in 1887 as part of Beeton's Christmas Annual.
Netley is a village near Southampton, home to a military hospital that was opened in 1863 and at 435m long, was the longest building in the world at the time. It saw use in both World Wars, but fell into disrepair after that - after a 1963 fire damaged much of the building, the place was demolished in 1966 and only the chapel remains. A military psychiatric facility remained on site until 1978,
The Fifth Northumberland Fusiliers is now part of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, whose 5th Battalion is today a Reserve regiment.
The 66th (Berkshire) Regiment of Foot disappeared in 1881 as part of army reforms, being one of the ancestors of the modern day The Rifles.
The Battle of Maiwand on 27 July 1880 was one of the key battles of the Second Anglo-Afghan War; to put it simply, it was a heavy British loss although the Afghans, led by Ayub Khan, themselves had a lot of casualties themselves. Two Victoria Crosses were awarded for the battle and the retreat afterwards. Khan's forces were decisively defeated a month later at the Battle of Kandahar, the British ultimately winning that war.
A jezail was a handcrafted long-barreled rifle; very accurate for their time, they were generally highly decorated as well. Some saw use against Soviet forces in that particular conflict in Afghanistan.
Enteric fever is another name for typhoid fever; even with modern treatment, the death rate can be 1-4%.
The Criterion Restuarant is located on 224 Piccadilly and a plaque commemorating Watson's meeting with Stamford was added by the Baker Street Irregulars in 1981. It is currently closed, but the current owners plan to turn it into an Indian restaurant with as much decor as the listed building status allows.
The Bunsen burner was developed in the 1850s by German chemist Robert Bunsen and his assistant Peter Desaga.
Police News of the Past references The Illustrated Police News, a sensationalised tabloid newspaper that ran from 1864 to 1938.
