In the first appearance, he appears as a young but intelligent figure in front of Sunuk, who explains the situation of the world, and after the Great War of Guando, his eldest brother Jo-bi kills all the women in Yuan-so's family and only saves him. While doing so, he is caught by his mother, Mr. Byun [12], and is beaten by his confidant and faints. (…) Later, Mr. Byun is sent to Heo-do to take Jo Shik away from Mr. Gyeon. The day before she goes to Heo-do, she hears from Mr. Byun that her love with Mr. Gyeon is a betrayal of her heavenly principles and that she will stop it no matter what. Afterwards, whether she came to her senses, nothing about Mr. Gyeon comes out except once.
Cao Cao's victory over Yuan Shao and the talents of the four northern provinces, together with Shi Shi, go to Heo Island. At the banquet attended by Heonje, a commotion arises when Jobi conveys Jojo's request to Jinrim to read the writings that betrayed him. In response, Gong-yong [13] said that it was rude to recite such a text in front of the emperor, and wrote a poem about the turbulent times that began with Tensangshi and Dongtak's tyranny and the hearts of the imperial family and people who suffered from it. The Emperor hears his cigar and is moved to tears. Suddenly, Jo Shik recites Naksinbu. Then, Jin-rim is surprised to see Shi-sik reciting a poem at once, and Jo-bi realizes who the poem is referring to. Heonje recalls the bewitching goddess just by listening to the cigar. However, Gong-yong blocks Shik's cigar, saying that it is rude to discuss such lustful cigars in the royal palace. Jin-rim then argues with Gong-yong, saying that Jo Shik's poetry is to open the door to a new language. At that time, Jojo enters the banquet hall beating drums. Gong-Yong and Jin-Lin stop talking for a moment, but Jo-Jo beats the drums and puts the beat, saying that such an argument is also a good cigar. Then the band follows Jojo and plays in a new tone. Seeing this, Gong Rong criticizes Jojo, who possesses the strongest military force on earth and has a strong influence on the court, trying to obtain literature and art as an unprecedented act of tyranny. Cho Shik refutes Gong Rong's words and says that literature can end this troubled world. Gong-yong argues against Shik again, but Jin-rim agrees with him, saying that his poems brought Confucianism down from its absolute position. Then, Jojo agrees with Jinrim's words and declares to everyone not to be suppressed in Confucianism and to let their talent bloom to their heart's content. In response, an explanation of the wind bone of the Han Yu (漢魏) comes out against the background of the scene where Emperor Heonje personally dances.
Looking at the later appearances, he shares friendship with literary men including Jinrim and Wangchan, but he starts drinking alcohol in frustration that the only thing he can do in the rapidly changing Wei Dynasty is to write. At the time when King Wi ascended to the throne and Cao Bi became the Crown Prince, he showed a drunken appearance to the extent that he could not take any countermeasures, but nevertheless, his wealth was the best in the world, and he was revered as a Chinese saint until Du Fu appeared hundreds of years later. After the narration that he received it, he does not appear anymore.

TV Recommendation: Princess Silver
Tumblr media
The Kingdom of Qi is in decline.
Surrounded by enemies, weak, and with an ailing young Emperor, it is decided that Princess Rong Le must be sent to the far north to marry Prince Wuyou of the prosperous Lin Empire.
But then something goes.... sideways.
Prince Wuyou- rumored to be kind, handsome, smart, and brave- wants nothing to do with Princess Rong Le. He is cold, rude, and hates the Emperor with a passion.
To try and make the alliance work, Princess Rong Le gets Prince Wuyou to agree to a bet- she has six months to change his mind about the marriage. The princess is certain her plan will work for one key reason: she has no intention of marrying the prince at all.
See, Princess Rong Le was really sent to retrieve something for her brother. A book of military strategy said to be so comprehensive and powerful that whoever owns the book can own the world. But the book was lost when its author was framed for treason and he and his family were summarily executed.
Princess Rong Le maintains the image of a gentle and warm hearted royal, charming the imperial family and keeping to herself for the most part. The fact that she wears a mask which covers most of her face- a tradition to prevent others from seeing a bride before her wedding- gives her an air of mystery.
And lets her sneak out as much as she wants, so long as she leaves one of her trusted maids wearing her mask. Rong Le spends her days in the Moon Embrace Tea House- a popular local establishment which no one suspects is a central hub for the entire Qi Empire’s spy ring in the Northern Lin Empire. There, Rong Le takes on the identity of merchant Man Yao.
Prince Wuyou has been cold and bitter since the brutal death of his mother many years before- and the execution of his beloved teacher not long after. He seeks to destroy the Crown Prince- the very man suspected in framing his beloved teacher. Prince Wuyou’s investigation takes him to the Moon Embrace Tea House, where he meets and falls in love with Man Yao, never suspecting her to be the fiancee he has scorned.
Man Yao and Prince Wuyou are both after the missing military treatise written by his master so many years ago, and both are willing to do anything to find it. For Prince Wuyou, the book represents a chance to clear his master’s name and force the Emperor to allow him to be with the woman of his choice. For Rong Le, it is a weapon sorely needed to save her country.
There is a wrinkle in this love story though::
Just before setting off for Northern Lei, Princess Rong Le was attacked and barely survived. Her memories, however, were completely lost.
Is Princess Rong Le even Princess Rong Le? Why does the Northen Lin Empire have a sense of familiarity to her? And if she isn’t Princess Rong Le, what exactly is the Qi Empire planning?
And if they are willing to invent a princess to achieve their goals, what will they do to her if those goals are realized?
As Rong Le and Wuyou fall in love with one another, they will have to find the answers to these questions in order to survive the storms brewing around them.

Impavid here! Okay, this is pretty amazing! I do need to make a few corrections (Zaichun was never king; his older sister Guang was the queen - the Hou-Ting killed by the Red Lotus, for example) and sure there are a few missing characters (how could there not be, there are so damn many) but even still, AMAZING.
Also, I laughed a lot at your little comments, @tortoisesforhire. “Budding lepidopterist.” “Tried to scold Sayuri once.” (Tried being the operative word, good luck on that one.) THAT MADE MY DAY.
I can also add in some of the missing names, for sure.
Anybody else? Please add in. I know @peoniequeen is also making a list just as I know there are a lot more characters. (God help us all. But me. Especially me.)
Once this is all complete I’ll create a page for it here on Tumblr and post it permanently. Also, I think I can post it on AO3 as well.

Review: Douluo Continent
Tumblr media
Journey in a world of Soul Masters and Soul Beasts with Tang San and friends as they uncover conspiracies and finally reach their dream of becoming a Soul Master.
STORY
So the drama follows Tang San’s journey into developing his powers, finds the meaning of friendship and uncover the secrets his family hides.
*Note: I tried not to spoil to much and placed a warning for the spoiler part.
This drama is really a story of the underdogs, we have Tang San the son of a blacksmith from a small town village, the mysterious Xiao Wu, not exactly in exile and always underestimated second prince Dai Mu Bai, Secretive Zhu Zhu Qing, Whiny Ning Rong Rong, Insecure and always distracted Ou Si Ke and the naive Ma Hong Jun  and alongside is their despite poor but very supportive teachers and Principal.
Tumblr media
I know that this was adapted from a novel but I have never read it so I don’t know if it follows the storyline completely and what were the changes in the drama. I really like the journey aspect of the drama, from his small town to enrolling in a prep school only to be bullied and become a fugitive on the run to finally finding the right school to nurture his talents, Tang San had one heck of an adventure that's for sure.
Tumblr media
I also like the growth of each character and I definitely love that the drama is not as serious as most costume fantasy drama, this is a more light hearted underdog drama.
Tumblr media
Romance was definitely a slow burner in this drama and I kind of appreciate that it didn’t focus on that and instead on their growth as future Soul Masters. Cause even though romance was slow and I mean snail/sloth whatever really slow, it didn’t feel like that cause the chemistry between Tang San and Wu is really amazing. They have this extremely strong bond with one another that I didn’t mind that their buildup was so long. ‘Cause despite not dating or even confessing their feelings, they act like they have been married for years, I mean they are more of an ideal couple than a lot of couples in Chinese Dramas.
Tumblr media
If you don’t want to read at my rant, you can skip on this part and head to characters.
Who else was disappointed with the ending? I love everything about the drama except for the ending. Like what happened? I’m pretty sure I didn’t skip but how did the storyline go there? Did I miss something? Was a scene cut? Did WeTv cut some scenes ‘cause I’m so confused. Like where was the big fight? Where was Titan? Where was the Venom Grand Soul Master and Master Ning? The defeated students? What happened? How did they get there? Where is the ending for the other students? It should have ended on episode 39 and just say they won and Tang San and Wu finally got their kiss and everyone is where they should be. ‘Cause Episode 40 is like a big a….. Cliff!!! lol. And I need and like NEED the season 2 for this ASAP.
CHARACTERS
Tumblr media
TANG SAN
Tang San is the only son of the Blacksmith Tang Hao in a small village. They live quite remotely in a bamboo forest and mostly rely on each other. Tang San is your definition of a good guy; he is filial, kind, loyal and optimistic. He was born with a full Soul Power which is very rare and his soul form is a Blue Silver Plant and hides that fact that has a twin martial soul; the Hao Tian Hammer that he inherited from his father.
Tumblr media
XIAO WU
Xiao Wu is the cute and energetic bunny and like literally, her soul form is a mystic pink rabbit. She is very confident in her martial arts skills and almost immediately grew attached to Tang San. Xiao Wu is confident and bubbly but at the same time naive and innocent.
Tumblr media
DAI MO BAI
Dai Mu Bai is one of the students in Shu Lin Kai and the second prince of Xing Luo Kingdom who grew up always inferior to his older brother. He is good looking and is always serious and confident, sometimes a little bit too much. He takes up the leadership role in the team. His soul form is a White Tiger.
Tumblr media
ZHU ZHU QING
Zhu Zhu Qing is like the mother of the team. She is calm and collected (most of the time). She came to Shu Lin Kai with a motive involving Dai Mo Bai. She is also from Xing Luo Kingdom. She becomes the “older sister” for the other two girls on the team. Her soul form is a Hell Civet (looks like a black panther)
Tumblr media
OU SI KE
Ou Si Ke is the adopted son of the principal of Shu Lin Kai. He often writes plays and makes his own costumes, his dream was to become a playwright despite his adoptive father’s wishes; to be a Soul Master. He is from the Support Branch Martial Soul, meaning his power is mainly to assist others.
Tumblr media
NING RONG RONG
Ning Rong Rong is the only daughter of Ning FengZhi, the clan leader of the Qibao Amber Clan. She first started off as this spoiled little princess who whines at everything but she eventually fits in the group despite her constant complaints, I think that is one of her charm, she is like the little sister of the group who always bickers with Ou Si Ke. Her Soul form is the Qibao Pagoda.
Tumblr media
MA HONG JUN
Ma Hong Jun is probably the youngest of the team and is most often treated as such. He grew up with his father but because of other people’s greed and ambition, he was practically forced into something he had no idea about. With nowhere else to go, Hong Jun greatly relies on the school and is taken as the disciple of the principal. His soul form is a phoenix
CAST
This is my first drama with Xiao Zhan and its a really good introduction to him. I also really love Betty Wu and the rest of the cast. As for Gao Tai Yu who plays as Dai Mu Bai, I knew that I have seen that face I just can’t place where and when I checked it turns out he was the former leader on Gank Your Heart with Wang Yibo and then the first emperor on Emperors and Me, no wonder he was so familiar.
Tumblr media
FINAL THOUGHTS RATING: 8.2/10
This is a really good drama and is definitely worth the watch. It's a light hearted inspirational story of an underdog who overcomes his limits and flourishes despite the challenges. The acting was superb and graphics were good as well. It's really good for those who have not yet watched any costume or historical drama ‘cause it eases you into a completely different culture and environment than modern Cdrama. If you are curious why its only 8.2, then you have to watch it and tell me what you think of the ending lol.
Tumblr media
ABOUT THE DRAMA
Synopsis:
Having lost his mother at a very young age, Tang San grew up relying on his father just as much as his father relied upon him. Meticulous and mature for his age, with extraordinary talent and wit, he was sent to Nuoding Academy, at the age of sixteen, to begin pursuing his dream of becoming a great soul master. There, under the tutelage of Yu Xiao Gang, he befriends an orphan by the name of Gu Xiao Wu, and together they begin the long and difficult journey of cultivation.  As time passes, the two friends draw ever closer, eventually swearing to look out for each other as siblings for life.
As their power and connection grow, Yu Xiao Gang realizes they need more guidance than he can provide. Sending the pair to the Shrek Academy, Tang San and Xiao Wu join five other prodigies from various academies, in their journey of cultivation. Strong in their power, the seven students become known throughout the land as the “Shrek Seven Devils”. With their fame ever-growing, the talents of the Seven are eventually noticed by a few very prominent nobles who invite them to continue their cultivation at the esteemed Tian Dou Royal Academy.
Not long after accepting the invitation, the Seven Devils find themselves caught up in an imperial struggle for power, between the first and fourth princes. At the same time, Tang San uncovers a long-hidden secret about his mother’s death. Suddenly facing battles on many fronts, Tang San finds himself forced to fight, not only to protect those he loves, but to bring honor to his sect, save his country, and complete his quest to become the greatest soul master of all time.

The Legends (2019) Full Review
My review of the first 30 episodes of the drama can be found here.
This is more of a rant than a review. The drama should have wrapped up at episode 35. I was able to tolerate it up to episode 42 when the wedding was, but by episode 48 it’s a total mess.
Tumblr media
If only this scene was as epic as the picture makes it look. But alas, this was just a dream sequence, and by this point in the finale, I was already bored and scrolling through instagram on my phone. If only they really did have a love-hate relationship. But this is an angst-free drama.
Inconsistent character arcs
The FL and ML have become incredibly weak, both in terms of abilities and personality. The changes just don’t make sense for their characters.
Zhao yao is no longer the badass she once was, and I’m actually fine with that. Moving away from her demoness persona is part of her growth. BUT, she no longer has a goal in the drama (except when she finds out that Mo Qing has an inner demon. Then, her goal becomes finding a way to expel the demon). But in the last quarter of the drama, she doesn’t really do anything of importance. She lost her sword, but she doesn’t actively go and find it. Instead, Mo Qing and Jiang Wu are the ones who took initiative to hunt it down for her. And when Lin Zi Yu got away with it, she doesn’t bother thinking about finding her sword again?? I mean girl, you lost your sword. Your only weapon. Why is that not at the top of your list of priorities? Is this the same FL who had risked it all for the Wan Jun sword?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I miss the demoness)
Tumblr media
Her tolerance level for things that annoy her is just so out of character. Zhao yao used to be someone who always fought back against anything she didn’t like. But when it comes to Jiang Wu, she seems to have unlimited tolerance for him. Yes, he saved her, but owing him does not mean letting him be a menace. Like when Jiang Wu sucked the life energy out of Ah Dai. All she did was try to restrain Mo Qing from attacking Jiang Wu, but she didn’t spring forward to prevent Jiang Wu from killing Ah Dai. I mean, the cause of Mo Qing’s rage was Ah Dai dying. Shouldn’t you go address the root of the problem? Instead, she just sits and stares and lets Jiang Wu kill Ah Dai instead of doing something. And then there’s the scene in the library when she’s asleep, but Mo Qing is wrestling with his inner demon, and then the Wan Jun sword kills the 2 guards on duty. She just sleeps through the entire thing. Wasn’t she once the most feared conqueror/demoness? Isn’t she a warrior? How can your senses not be alert when there’s so much ruckus around you? Someone on MDL said that she became a glorified baby sitter for the ML, and while I don’t agree that it’s as extreme as that, I can see their point. All that Zhao yao does after the wedding is try to reign in Mo Qing to prevent him from going into full-on demon mode. She holds him back, tries to calm him and soothe him, rinse and repeat.
Tumblr media
Speaking of Mo Qing, his current personality is just rage and jealousy. At first, it was kinda endearing seeing him jealous, but soon his entire arc was just about him being consumed by jealousy. The writers try to justify it by saying that he’s always had low self-esteem and been unconfident about himself because of his upbringing, and the growing demon energy inside him is exacerbating these thoughts, making him more unlike himself, but you’re telling me that everything that he and Zhao yao had gone through together was all for naught? This would have made sense 5 years ago, but we’ve seen that he has greatly matured since becoming sect leader. During the earlier episodes, he was able to see right through Zhao yao’s mask. He teased her, flirted with her, scolded her, and basically proved he’s her equal in every way, and he did it all with easy confidence. And now suddenly, all of that growth reverses, and he’s insecure and sensitive again. This character progression just doesn’t make sense in the context of everything that’s happened. I would have loved to have seen more of the introverted and unconfident Mo Qing at the beginning of the drama. But instead, we only got a handful of scenes before that part of his character arc was cut short and we skip ahead 5 years later and then another 5 years later to when he’s the sect leader. There was honestly no purpose for Mo Qing’s suffering. He just suffered for the sake of suffering. In other xianxia dramas, characters suffered for a purpose. It was a price they had to pay in order to protect someone they love. But this suffering is just pointless. It does nothing for this character arc. And they kept replaying the same montage of him sleeping on the dragon. As if it’s not already clear from the last 20 episodes that he’s being haunted by his father’s demon.
Villains and supporting characters
I didn’t really care for the villains? Luo Mingxuan is still alive, but doesn’t do anything until the last 5 episodes. I eyeroll whenever Lin Zi Yu is onscreen. Jiang Wu is the only one who’s interesting and he serves as comedic relief.
Tumblr media
And then there are all the unnecessary deaths. It’s like they’re killing off all the good characters one by one. What was the point of killing off the doctor? He was the only character who could scold both Zhao yao and Mo Qing. The drama felt so empty without him.
But on a good note, I really liked most of the supporting characters, from Zhiyan to Shi Qi to Ah Rong to Gu Hanguang. They were also the most consistent characters in the drama.
On a bad note, the drama spent too much time on the backstories of supporting characters. I did not care to watch Suruo mourn Luo Mingxuan and remembering how they fell in love, and this happens for pretty much all the couples in the drama. It’s because Zhao yao and Mo Qing have a very simple romantic arc that’s resolved very early on, so the writers had to throw in fillers to drag out the drama. And the consequence is that our leads end up getting not enough screen time.
The final 2 episodes
Oh boy. The last 2 episodes were a hot mess. In the final battle, everyone kept attacking and stabbing Luo Mingxuan, but he just won’t die?? He’s like Wolverine. He just comes back stronger. It just kept dragging on and on, and I completely lost interest. And I felt bad for Xu Kai. He was standing on the sidelines for most of the battle, just watching and shooting worried faces at Zhao yao. I hate to say he was useless, but it just felt like the writers did him dirty. Even Jiany Wu, who had already died by that point, was given a brief re-appearance. While Mo Qing, the ML, was forced to sit out on the action.
Tumblr media
I’m also so over the will-he-won’t-he be evil plot. I keep saying this but I’ll say it again. It. Just. Keeps. Dragging. I’ve watching longer dramas, but this one felt to go on forever. We get it. You’re being tortured by your inner demon, but love will conquer all.
The editing is also weird? Some of the scenes aren’t in chronological order, and there’s no separation between dream sequences and reality. I also never liked the preview at the beginning of each episode. I also hate how they cut some crucial scenes from the TV version that’s on youtube, forcing me to hop onto doboku, which buffers.
Honestly, the last episode felt like a hallucinated dream sequence. In one scene, they’re all sitting around the table saying that the need to seal the Wan Jun sword before Mo Qing gets out of the control, and then it suddenly cuts to black with a title card that says 5 years later (don’t get me started on how often they overuse the “5 years later” plot device. Why is it always exactly 5 years?) We then see that Zhiyan is now the sect leader, and we’re told that Mo Qing has sealed himself away, and Zhao yao has been waiting for him to return. We don’t see them say goodbye to Mo Qing before he seals himself away. No scene showing a handover to Zhiyan. We’re just forced to go with it and imagine these scenes ourselves.
Zhao yao, with a new hairstyle and new clothes to signify the time skip, watches Zhi yan and the sect from the distance. She then goes to visit other people, like Sima Rong and Liu Cangling. Liu Cangling and Zhiyan are the only couple who were able to move on from each other, and honestly, good for them. We then see Zhao yao sitting in the cave, pouring wine onto the cave floor, and then it cuts to black again and a sword flies through the air and wedges itself on the bedrock and we hear Mo Qing say Zhao yao’s name in a voiceover. And then it cuts to a scene where they’re both in the cave wearing their clothes from 5 years and Zhao yao has her old hairstyle. You assume this is a flashback to when they sealed the sword. And then we see Mo Qing in another realm where he lowers the sword in to the water, presumably sealing it. And then it cuts to both of them on the street buying food, wearing their old clothes and hairstyles.
Does this mean he got out of the seal? When in the timeline is this street scene? How did he get out of the seal? Did he just walk out? Was Zhao yao there waiting for him, or did he go and find her? It’s typical for there to be a long period of uncertain separation in xianxia and wuxia dramas, and these dramas usually end either ambiguously where you don’t know if the couple will reunite, or they end with an emotional reunion, like in Ashes of Love, Eternal Love, Love and Destiny, and Love and Redemption, and famously in Return of the Condor Heroes. But what in the world was this ending?? The hell happened? That was so anticlimactic. If the scene on the street really was their “reunion” after he got out of the seal, does that mean Zhao yao changed her hair back to 5 years ago? Why is the costuming so confusing then?
Tumblr media
And the last scene where they have the same actors play their kids? Um, no. That’s just plain weird. You built up the chemistry between the 2 actors, and then in the end you make them play siblings and re-enact the scene of when their parents met? For what? To make the audience reminisce about the budding romance between the leads at the beginning so that things come full circle? But, these characters are siblings?? You’re trying to make us emotional over a scene of two siblings pretending to be lovers?
There was just no point in doing that. It doesn’t tell us anything about the characters’ married life now. I don’t care about their kids. I care about the characters and what they’re doing now. What a strange and uncomfortable way to end the drama. Not satisfying at all.
It would have been better if they had left it ambiguous. The amount of times that Zhao yao came back from the dead showed that they can defy the impossible, so even if it was an ambiguous ending, you’d still be able to believe that they’ll be together again. But this mess just ruined the chemistry. Ugh. I really miss the first half of the drama.
Overall Impression
I’m mad about how chaotic the last few episodes were. While the beginning of the drama wasn’t without its flaws either, it was still very promising and intriguing. The beginning of the drama felt like they knew where they were going with the story, even if you didn’t completely like the direction that it went. So yes, I echo the other critiques saying that this drama had a strong beginning and a weak end.
When I got to episode 35, I thought, how bad can this get? When I got to episode 42, I was still holding out hope that maybe other people were just harsh and maybe I’ll actually enjoy it. But no, the final 10 episodes are really as bad as everyone says it is.
The romance, which was the only reason I stuck to the drama, also felt a little underdeveloped. I wish we got to see more scenes of them pre-episode 30.They were so cute then. Everything post-episode 30 was just them being constantly worried about each other.
At least there was no angst. And the comedy was great. So there’s that.
I give this drama a 7/10 for the characters and the premise. The plot is not worth watching due to terrible editing, pacing, and consistency, but it’s also a drama that won’t take you long to watch since you could skip most of it anyway and just go to the scenes with the leads. It’s my first drama watching Bai Lu and Xu Kai, but I’m def now interested in more of their work, like Arsenal Military Academy.

Spy Thriller + Murder Mystery + Cooking Show
When asked to describe The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty, I can only describe its genre as being exactly as above. it’s as quirky as you’d expect, with genuinely compelling characters, plot twists to shock you, and compassion for every character, no matter how twisted.
Tumblr media
I believe TSOMD is based on a danmei novel, and you can see the “bromance” of Tang Fan and Sui Zhou is representative of something more than “just friends.” But, while both Tang Fan and Sui Zhou are excellent characters who each get strong development, the emotional core of the show is hardly either of them. Instead, the third main character, Wang Zhi (based on a real historical figure), steals the show’s heart and soul, undergoing one of the most beautiful, complex arcs I’ve seen in a long time, from scheming utilitarian to kind human.
I’ll probably write a meta just about Wang Zhi’s arc, but the short version is that he’s based on a real-life eunuch (and eunuchs in imperial China, er, lost more than you’d think) who de facto ran the empire. His interactions with Tang Fan, Sui Zhou, their found family, as well as with the Emperor and the Noble Consort (his unofficial adopted parents) and his righthand man Ding Rong all offer him challenges.
Tumblr media
In general, the show did excellently with the romances, both explicit and subtextual. Tang Fan and Sui Zhou were truly compelling, and seeing them develop together was lovely. Wang Zhi also has a subtextual romance with Ding Rong (it’s barely subtext, and directly parallel to Tang Fan/Sui Zhou multiple times) that is equally compelling. Explicitly, we have Pei Huai and Tang Yu, Lin Chaodong and his fiancee, Princess Gu’an and Wang Xian, the Emperor and Noble Consort, and even some puppy love from Dong’Er and Little Loach. Perhaps the only one the show didn’t sell me on was Duo’Erla and A’lasi.
I quite enjoyed the compassion the show had for mental illnesses and other disorders. It outright condemned people accusing those who suffer from ailments of demonic possession, and while it is set in the 1500s, Pei Huai, a doctor, offers some truly honest, accurate, and kind descriptions of post-traumatic stress disorder, which Sui Zhou suffers from, and autism, which Wang Xian has--and explicitly states, regarding the latter, that it is not an illness. It’s just a different way of thinking and processing. The show’s depiction of PTSD was extremely honest and realistic (and not gratuitous), as was its depiction of autism, and a panic attack.
Tumblr media
The show also donates quite a bit of its time to exploring the past of its villains, humanizing them. Even the most disgusting ones, whom I loathed, I ended up crying for. It doesn’t excuse them, but it does show how human they still are at their core--and this, in turn, ties into the show’s main theme of humanity (Wang Zhi’s arc is entirely about learning to live as a full human). It offers redemption for many of them; some take it, some do not.
Tumblr media
Female characters abound, and they are all unique and complex. From the child genius Dong’Er to the proper mother Tang Yu, to prostitute Qing Ge to disguised Jin San, to the kind and capricious Princess Gu’an and the fiesty Duo’Erla, the Emperor’s Mother to the Noble Consort, each character is unique and does not only exist to serve the male characters in the story: instead, they have their own to tell.
However, I’d be remiss not to mention my issues as well. One prominent female character very much gets fridged at the end of her arc for manpain, and it’s incredibly frustrating. In addition, I was highly uncomfortable with what could be seen as racism towards the Oirat people. While there are a variety of Oirat characters and many are heroic, there was a balance the show tried to walk and didn’t entirely succeed. China’s record on treatment of minority people groups (which continues to this day with the Uygurs) makes it hard to give the show the benefit of the doubt in its iffy moments of Oirat portrayal.

Have you read 2020 bc of you book/novel? If so I'd there any sex scenes? From like the older brother and middle brother couple? Is there any differences or additions? Also do you know where I can read it sense I couldn't/still can't buy it?
yeap i read it. and nope it’s pretty much almost PG13, no explicit scenes, despite the misleading cover. some innuendo and discussion of top/bottom positions again -_- but it’s a pretty friendly book.
and i don’t know where you can read it sorry - if you want to buy it i think yesasia is still the easiest way to get it.
and since you asked i shall take this time to put in the additional parts of 2020 Because of You via the novel here (there aren’t a lot, it’s a pretty thin novel compared to MODC and Trapped, and there’s like double spacing between sentences):
Dad Yuan Wei Zhi & Cui Ying’s story - This wasn’t really explained in the show, so what happened was YWZ and CY lived together since young and they were a couple until YJC’s Korean mom stepped into the picture, and YWZ like the dick he was told CY that he was definitely going to marry the Korean lady because it’d be beneficial to his business, and he kinda broke up with her but expected her to wait for him? I think like 2 years later or smth he divorced the Korean lady (which led to her going back to Korea in tears) because he got what he wanted and he didn’t want to live another day without CY, so ya know,  he went to look for CY at the cliffs and that’s why they had the bet and everything, because CY was tired of waiting for him
Jun Dao is the hot-headed brother and Jun Ping is the one who kind of is blur and mediates between his second and big brother - This was totally opposite in the show, and so Jun Ping and Jun Cheng’s relationship is better, that’s why JP had the keys to JC’s house (idk why it was necessary to switch it over but oh wells)
Kidnapping incident where YJC hung up - It was both Jun Dao and Jun Ping who were kidnapped, and yes, YJC still hung up on the kidnapper after he said “do whatever you want with them”
Xiang Shi’s backstory - So Xiang Shi’s family was rich before, until their fam’s company got caught in a crossfire between Jun Dao’s mom and YWZ, the fam lost their company and wealth to YWZ, but YWZ still let the Yang family i.e. XS’s parents oversee the company as his employees in a sense, but he needed a guarantee that they wouldn’t try to betray him or whatever, so XS’s mom sent him over to YWZ. Poor XS thought he was going to become some rich boy’s play thing and was gonna live like a servant and subject to abuse or whatever but he was okay with that if that meant his parents would stop being so worried about the whole thing, but of course he was shocked when he was picked up in a limo and then went to YJD’s house (which is where he’s lived alone all his life with only servants for company) and the first thing Jun Dao did was to ask him to play with him and they played until you know… a decade or so later
Xiang Shi was a bit pissed that Jun Dao didn’t tell him about YWZ looking for Lin Xun and granting the son who got to him first a wish - Because I think he wanted that wish for some reason? He might’ve asked Jun Dao to ask for something specific, probably to do with his own family, if JD got it, but he got over that quickly
Jun Ping, Jun Dao, Xiang Shi, Yue Rong and Lin Xun are indeed in the same university - And instead of meeting at the Taiwanese street stall for the food/alcohol part, they meet in the university’s cafeteria instead and there’s alcohol there because this school is kind of a luxurious school owned by the Yuans so…
Lin Xun has four jobs when YJC met him and YJC made him lose all the jobs by stalking him (wtf….) so he would ‘work’ for YJC instead - He was working at the convenience store, as a tutor, at a petrol kiosk and delivery I think
The scene where YJC is sappy and confesses to LX in their house, and they’re interrupted by a phone call, it’s not for a meal, but because Xiang Shi is ill and Jun Dao was asked to go away so Jun Dao called his older brother hoping that he would know what to do - And LX and YJC go over to YJD’s house and Lin Xun helps out. Xiang Shi wakes up and gets a shock to see LX and YJD sitting there lmao. And then LX went to cook a chicken dish that had alcohol in it, so YJD has it, and that’s why he’s so like clingy to Xiang Shi after, and idk they never once like define their relationship and this CP still confuses me tbh
Epilogue 1: Yue Wu - She’s still terribly unlikeable in the novel, but they do say she’s good friends with Xiang Shi but she’s a bitch to him in the first scene they have tgt so bleugh - And then she screams at Jun Ping and is like: “You choose, do you want me or Yue Rong?” And everyone is confused?!!! Because she’s never been close to Jun Ping? So of course YJP would pick Yue Rong ??? And then she scolds Yue Rong for being a mistress????! Totally confused at this scene
Epilogue Two: Meal + basketball match - They meet up outside for like a picnic kinda thing I think and the three brothers compete with each other with bball, and it’s a mess because like they’re split brothers in one team and their boyfriends in another and dumbass Jun Dao keeps giving the ball to Xiang Shi, and then the other two bros do the same more or less later in the game
Epilogue Three: YWZ talking to CY at the cliffs - YWZ knows that YJC and LX are together, and he’s super chill about it and all approving like, hey nice that our kids are together huh? (wait till he finds out about the other kids)
Epilogue Four: YJC and LX - They discuss who’s on the top between YJD and XS -_- and then I guess sexy times ensue but we don’t see it

Because of You - Ep9 & 10
Ohhh I’m really sad that episode 10 was the last episode with our dumbass Yuan brothers, they were idiots for most of the time but gosh they grow on you XD
What I really liked was that we got one episode of domestic bliss and happy ending and sappiness, which I have the feeling we rarely get because a lot of the times the climax is in the last episode and then we get 5 minutes of happy end fluff so kudos to BoY to giving us one whole episode even tho the episodes are short :D
Jun Cheng x Lin Xun
Definitely the highlight of the show, they had chemistry, they worked and Lin Xun is cheeky and self-confident enough to deal with Jun Cheng’s dramatics. The cliff scene was gold! I laughed so much because Lin Xun was so scandalized about Jun Cheng’s confession as if his mum would appear, hovering over the sea and wanting them to be quiet XD
I personally think that it fits Jun Cheng’s character to switch between extremes and we all agree that the smoothness between scenes could have been better but after the first episodes we knew what we would get. I will miss them and if they, one day, say that Jun Cheng is a hitman (just as a hobby) I will whole-heartily believe it LOL
Jun Dao x Xiang Shi
I loved Xiang Shi in the last episode, we got to see his sass and some more of his personality and I would have liked to have his bisexuality confirmed a bit earlier but the couple seemed overall the one with the least screen-time.
That’s why I don’t really understand their relationship but hey, happy-ends all around ^.~
Jun Ping x Yue Rong
Cuties! Really, all I wanted was to pinch their cheeks and make them realize that they are in an established relationship for years now. They were cute little sidekicks to the story and I loved that they were clearly so comfortable with each other.
+++
All in all, if you want to watch this series leave your brain cells at home and don’t question anything. I understand if people aren't built that way and will be frustrated with the series but for me, it was a short and funny show with lovable characters and all in all a storyline that was easy to follow.

Who were some of the most important people in Wu after Zhuge Ke’s death? I know about Ding Feng, Lü Ju, Zhu Yi, Lu Keng, Shi Ji and Tuo Huang, as well as of course the emperors and Sun Luban. Anyone else?
Let’s see...
Running the show you had the regents Sun Jun and Sun Chen (also called Sun Lin). Sun Chen also had a lot of help from his brothers, most notably Sun En.
Sun Luban had her own circle. It included Liu Cheng and the Quan family - most notably her step-son Quan Yi and his cousin Quan Duan, who both eventually defected to Wei. This also included Quan Shang, father to Sun Liang’s young empress Quan Huijie.
Of the emperors, Sun Liang was too young to be a real factor, and he was ousted as soon as he was old enough to start asking too many questions. Sun Xiu was simply negligent. He mostly left matters to the corrupt Puyang Xing and Zhang Bu.
Sun Hao was an active force in Wu, generally for the worse. His court included the corrupt chancellor Wan Yu and ministers like He Ding, He Zhao, and He Zhi (from his mother’s family), though it also contained decent sorts like the chancellors Lu Kai and Zhang Ti, as well as high officials like Teng Mu, Ding Gu and Meng Ren.
Other ministers of note include Teng Yin and Sun Luyu (who might have been involved in plots to assassinate Sun Jun). There were a number of noteworthy generals of varying degrees of significance. Wen Qin and Zhuge Dan were given lofty titles after they defected to Wu, but loyalists include Lü Ju, Liu Zan, Zhu Yi, Tang Zi, Lü Dai, Shi Ji (formerly Zhu Ji), Liu Zuan, Hua Rong, Bu Chan, Zhuge Jing, Ding Feng, Wu Yan, Liu Ping, Xue Xu, Tao Huang, and Tao Jun.
This isn’t a comprehensive list, of course, but these are some of the key figures who shaped events from 253-280. Everyone is encouraged to chime in with major figures I forgot.
