WAIT. In the last week I have talked to human beings in person for less than half an hour total, I've left the house 60% less than usual, I've been up til 1am four days in a row, AND I haven't touched a human being for over a month.
so that's why I'm going insane

It’s the way that Nathan Ford is BY FAR the least interesting character of the original Leverage five, and yet he’s the one who gets SO much backstory and context to himself. I’m literally watching the season 4 finale and I just don’t care that his father was murdered because Nate’s being incredibly annoying. Trying to be empathetic about a character grieving doesn’t even work for me here because his entire team is trying to make sure he doesn’t MURDER the man/men responsible for his father’s death and he’s not letting them in at all. It’s part of the reason I dislike his character so much. There’s hardly ever moments when he is genuinely vulnerable, not even with Sophie, who he is supposed to be in love with (yeah yeah, I know, they’re “friends with benefits” right now, but that’s not fooling anyone with eyes even without the knowledge that they end up together at the end). Nate is this mastermind of a character and it’s cool and intriguing for all of half of season before you’re scratching your head like, where’s the care for his team? He was kind to Hardison in the evaluation form and he didn’t want to make Eliot kill again, for any reason, but it’s so hard to appreciate his humanity when he’s spent the past three(ish) seasons on the verge of drinking himself to death, verbally bashing Sophie, and only being about the work. Sophie having a notebook full of moments when Nate put her or her ideas down isn’t funny or a moment of character growth. Nate doesn’t fully understands how that’s so shitty of him, as team leader, but also as her sexual (romantic?) partner. Every moment of Sophie and Nate’s relationship has to be fought for BY SOPHIE, and at this point, I don’t even know why she even wants him. He may be acting as Robin Hood and helping people, but he’s barely even a person while he’s doing it. I’ve never liked Nate, but making my way through season 4 has definitely given me the hardest time with remembering his redeeming qualities. Every time he’s vaguely misogynistic or acts like an immature man child when it comes to processing his emotions without alcohol (which happens: never), I question why he’s the main character, why my screen isn’t filled up with Hardison being the sassiest mf of them all or OT3 moments or Sophie conning the hell out of men who are led by their dicks and not their minds. When I’m watching the Nate centric scenes/episodes, I’m never wishing for more, I’m wishing the rest of the team was in the spotlight instead

Robin/Batgirl: Fresh Blood REVIEW
Tumblr media
So, it's Cassandra Cain day, and as always on this day I'll usually review a comic, I decided for this year I'd be reviewing Robin/Batgirl: Fresh Blood, considering I recently bought the trade last Christmas, so yeah!
First off, I want to start by saying that overall I think this is a pretty decent story, but it also highlights the difference between the two writers of Bill Willingham and Andersen Gabrych, seeing how they handle the grieving process of both Cass and Tim is particularly interesting.
Obviously I don't want to say Willingham doesn't try his best to make it seem like Tim is sad following Stephanie's death, but like he does really brush it off more, during her funeral he isn't even really sad about Steph all that much, more mad at Bruce.
And I understand Willingham tries to make an excuse that Tim is sad over a bunch of people rn so he doesn't have that many tears to shed over Steph, but like she's the most recent death, I think Tim would be a little more upset over her. 😭
Even after frickin' hallucinating her does he not even get sad over her, more or so his father, it really feels like he doesn't care that much about Steph's death and she's just another casualty.
Meanwhile for Cass, I'd say the weight is more felt, you actually see her shedding tears at her funeral, and it genuinely seems like Cass is more upset about her loss whereas Tim is just bottling up his emotions about it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, I definitely prefer how Gabrych writes the reaction to Stephanie's death as opposed to Willingham, because she feels more important of a loss.
As for things beyond that, I have to say there's some really good action sequences in this 4 parter, it's certainly helped that two of Cassandra Cain's best artists worked on this, being Damion Scott and Ale Garza, while their style does certainly contrast, considering Scott is more cartoonish and Garza is more anime-ish, I still think both do a fine job regardless and it's just nice to say there's a Cass comic out there where two of her best artists did some awesome stuff for her.
I especially like the scene where Cass is fighting Shrike and the scene where she's taking on a bunch of the Penguin's goons.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally, I'd like to touch on what I love most about the story, and that would be the contrast between Tim and Cass on wanting to be like Batman.
It's basically the main theme of the story, where Tim is afraid of becoming more like him, but Cass is embracing that, wanting to become that symbol.
It's best summarized in the scene at the end of the story where the two finally have a heart to heart about it, and it's some good stuff.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, overall, I would say I think Fresh Blood is a pretty good read.
It has some flaws here and there, especially the weird contrast between how each writer was reacting to the death of Steph at the time, but beyond that there's some good stuff that builds up Cass and Tim's relationship, and the art is certainly excellent coming from some of Cass's best artists.
Well, there you have it, my little review/analysis of Robin/Batgirl: Fresh Blood! Hope you all enjoyed it, and as always stay tuned.
Same bat-time, same bat-channel!
And happy birthday to the best comic character ever created imo: Cassandra Cain!

I FUCKING POSTED THIS ON MY MAIN FIRST💀💀💀
Anyway, after a bout of ennui, I grabbed this from my notes drafts bc it started glitching and I’m nervous it’ll delete smth by accident
Somewhere btwn s3/4 I THINK, in a govt hospital wing
“Whaddayou doin here, Harring-har-“
The word seems to get stuck malfunctioning somewhere between his brain and his mouth, as he blinks tiredly, still trying to figure out where the fuck he actually is.
“Oh you know”, gestures around with the folded magazine in his hand, “just uh, makin sure the scientists don’t, like, cart you off to, a- a different secret lab or somethin”
Lab? His tongue is dry and sticking to the roof of his mouth. Scientists? Billy’s brain fuzzily processes what Harrington’s insinuating, the alarm creeping up slowly.
“…..That’s a concern?”
“Oh yeah, big time. Also you’re lucky you woke up when you did, Nancy was supposed to take over next watch shift, and she’s not NEARLY as uh…..chipper as I am.”
“That so.”
“Yeah, no, I think Click-clack is givin her guff for some thing she submitted? I don’t know, she’s tetchy.”
“Have no idea what that means, also quick question-”
“Yeah”
“What the fuck is goin on?”
Harrington’s eyebrows raise as he puffs his cheeks and blows out a big breath,
“Oh jeez man, I don’t think I have enough- fuckin like, brain power to get into the whole thing right now-“
“Ugh, figures”, Billy shuts his eyes again and rests his head back, suddenly over being awake.
“Wh-hey, fuck you, I could be at home right now, instead of this creepy ass lair, but no, we gotta make sure Billy Hargrove doesn’t get vanished by the government.”
Lair? where are they? Harrington doesn’t seem that married to the petulant shit he’s saying anyway, it feels like it’s more just to have something to do. In any other situation Billy would feed the fuck into this, enjoy every button he’s pushing, but FUCK is he tired. His whole body feels like fuzzy static. Fuzzy achy static.
“She’s helping Murray set something up for you”
“What?” His face kinda hurts when his brows twist, giving up his half-assed attempt at sleep.
“Nancy,” he clarifies, “we had a whole exit strategy to get you outta here when you woke up. Get you like, back on your feet and fuck off into the sunset or whatever Max thinks you where gunna do”
Max.
“…….Why are you doin all this?” It’s barely a question really, more like a blank murmur, devoid of any inflection that could give Harrington the slightest hope of gauging Billy’s emotional state.
Steve heaves another slow measured breath, and looks slightly away from Billy, as if to try to remember why himself.
He blinks a few times, makes a vague shrugging gesture with like, the upper half of his body, then shakes his head a little, “Cause fuck these guys.”
Billy almost choked a little, deigning to open his eyes again and glance over.
“Yeah?” He asks with an audibly and visually confused smile, like he’s trying not to laugh at the ridiculous nature of Steve’s statement.
“Yeah, everything’s been their fault for like three years now. I’ve fought shit I wouldn’t put my worst enemies against. Fuckin vile.” He slumps back a bit, “You’re a dick, but like,…” he doesn’t seem to really have much of an answer past that, “Fuck em.”
[later]
“Maaan, Pick a story asshole, either I’m a slut who can’t be friends with girls, or I’m a freak loser, make up your mind”
[Robin walks in]
“What are we talking about?” She sounds like a mix of horrified, delighted, and grossly intrigued.
“He thinks we’re like,” gesturing between himself and Robin, “-secretly in love, or dating, or something”
Robins face scrunches up, “Ew.”
Steve makes a wide sweeping gesture at her, “THATS WHAT I SAID!”, and looks pointedly back at Billy, as if to say, ‘There, see?’
“Jesus, alright, you’re both undateable losers.”
“Oh, he has no problem getting dates-“ completely disregarding and breezing past Billy’s direct insult to her dateability
“The fuck, Rob-“
“Oh yeah?” He smiles, encouraging whatever sly shit she’s onto.
“I don’t know what you guys where sayin earlier about him bein a slut, but it’s not factually incorrect.”
Billy’s well-known cackle bursts outta him for the first time in months.
Steve just seems to deflate with the power of his sigh, arms momentarily thrown up in the air in defeat before landing down against his jeans with a pointed SLAP as he sinks further down into the uncomfortable chair he’s been lounging in this entire time.
“Rob, what are you even doin here-“ he starts off, obviously trying to divert the topic of conversation, god he’s so whiney sometimes, Billy’s kinda obsessed with it, “wait-HOW are you even here?” His tone switches to confused disbeleif, eyeing her with confusion.
“I own a bike, dingus, and I have functioning legs.”
His eyebrows screw together, “You live like, ten minutes by car from here- whaddoyoumean you ‘rode your bike’, it’s like 90 degrees out-“ he flings an arm out towards the windowless wall.
“Jeez, okay mom, I-“
“Have you had anything to drink? Are you even wearing sunscreen?”
“I’m fine! It’s nice out-“
“It’s the middle of august !”
“It’s the beginning of august, first of all-“
“Heat strokes not a joke Bobbin, you can get-“
“Yes I know, Stevert, I’m in band, I’m outside wearing synthetic hell clothes for practice all summer-“
“Yeah, standing, not biking who knows how many miles uphill in the sun.”
Billy finally interjects, “Jesus I take it back, you’re obviously divorced.”
He gets twin looks of scandal.
“How dare you, first of all-“
“I would never-“
Billy just snorts and settles back into his sheets, “Sure, whatever.”
After a moment of silence
“Actually, Nancy dropped me off on the way to Forrest hills.”
“Oh, you bitch.” Steve breathes out right before Robin breaks out laughing.
Robin and Steve continue sniping back and forth, this time in Italian, Steve rapid-fire, Robin more careful and deliberate.

putting my stranger things band au out into the world
weve got steve on main vocals/guitar
robin on bass/backup vocals (although there are a couple songs where she takes main)
and max on drums
do they have a specific genre? who tf knows i chose these songs for their lyrics and story but i imagine some would be modified to create a more uniform sound
now for the album in order(please hear me out on some of these):
Dear Reader- Taylor Swift (steves song to dustin)
BNBG- Djo (steve meeting eddie and discovering hes bi)
To Love a Boy- Maya Hawke (robin song!! self explanatory)
Change- Djo (steve reflecting on who he used to be vs who he is now)
Dial Drunk- Noah Kahan (steve gets arrested for xyz and his parents wont answer)
Somebody’s Baby- Sidney Gish (robin song 2!! start of her crush on nancy)
Acolyte- Slaughter Beach, Dog (90% written by steve before eddies death and finished after)
Run the World!!!- Dayglow (written by max! they all call it their fun song but its definitely still more about her ptsd and depression)
Strange Time- Matt Maltese (steve wrote this soon after eddie died)
Coffee- Chappell Roan (duet between steve and robin about their shared ex, nancy. they all ofc still love her and are very close friends but this was written during a rough patch post ronance breakup)
Brother- Fenne Lily (co-written by max and steve about their relationship)
ceilings- Lizzy McAlpine (steve keeps forgetting that eddie has died)
Francesca- Hozier (stobins soulmate song! written by robin because she knows steve feels guilty about dragging her into the upside down but she doesnt regret it because now she has him)
vague storyline is that steve starts getting into music to cope with all of the upside down shit sometime between end of season 1 and season 2. he starts seeing eddie after season 3 and is head over heels for him before eddie (still) dies at the end of season 4 and is (obviously) heartbroken.
after max heals she starts learning the drums to help process emotions better and also around this time robin and nancy start a budding romance. steve learns about max playing the drums and starts having jam sessions w her and later on robin also joins and its just very cathartic for them all. nancy and robin are kinda on again off again until steve and robin write Coffee together which firmly puts them in the past and they remain good friends after. (i love ronance i swear but for whatever reason in this au i just dont see them lasting longterm) (also i feel bad because the story of Coffee feels like it makes out nancy to be a villain and i love her i swear)
after a few years steve, robin, and max decide to start playing local bars and small shows and eventually are discovered and release their first and only album. the album gets wildly popular and they tour for a bit but none of them really wanted fame and decided that they really just preferred making music in their living rooms. they do pop up shows at small venues every now and again and they still consider themselves A Band.
likely they get rediscovered on tik tok or something and everyone is coming up with theories on the story of the album(stupid shit like ‘he said eddie in acolyte right’ ‘no dude he said annie steve isnt gay god some people’ or some weird love triangle involving steve robin and some mystery person) so they all make a video talking about the history of the band and steve comes out and opens up about how some of the songs are about eddies death (which starts another fire once people find out that steves eddie is eddie munson because obviously everyones heard of the hawkins murders at which point steve releases a video basically telling everyone to not talk about shit they know nothing about and to fuck off and leave him alone and after that the band is never heard from online again) happily ever after the end :) i just needed this out of my brain

There is only one thing I never understood about the Teen Titans, and I'm talking about the show that isn't a crime against nature and was actually cool. Why was Robin always so serious and moody?? He was supposed to represent Dick, right. Mr. Disco Wing!? The most flamboyant Bat ever?? Circus boy??? Why the heck did they make him so moody and angsty, was he having his teenage emo phase or something!?
Babe dick grayson had a character arc. He started as angry and vengeance seeking when his parents died, then chilled out to be a peppy kid for a couple of years. Then he essentially started to process the trauma and recognize how controlling bruce is vs trying to grow and find his own identity as he outgrew the robin mental. A good chunk of that was dick being highly competent and trained but still getting treated as a child.
So at around fifteen he fully left home to life full time with the titans and in new york sometimes. In that time he was constantly foghting with bruce and bruce just picked up a whole other kid and gave the kid the name robin despite the title originally being personal to dick because it was his mothers nickname for him. This would be the time period teen titans takes place. Hence angsy moody hyper competant teen. He's trying his best to prove himself and is also a leader and one of the main smart guys on the team. So his characterization makes sense even if we get very little fun dick.
Eventually dick shifts ti nightwing and moves to bludhaven and starts to establish himself as his own guy. Only for jason to die when he was on a mission to space. This furthermesses up his relationship with bruce. But tim litterally stalks him to convimce him to come back and while dick refuses to go back tobbeing robin (he sees that as a regression) he does make an effort to reconnect with bruce and to be the brother to tim he never was to jason.
The flamboyant circus boy stuff definitely comes through as he becomes nightwing, which is why we got discowong in the first place. But in general i thing reconnecting with his family made it easier for him to be happy go lucky. I also think to some degree he does mask his more negative emotions around tim and later the younger siblings. Hes honest with bruce and never really loses his anger issues. He also keeps his hyper-conpetence.
I think its kind of reductive to make dick purely 'the fun robin'. Like yes being fun and funny and cheerful is how he defined his robin and its very much part of his character, but he was never just that. He has dementions and emotions and trauma. Lots of trauma. He deserves to be shown in all his facets.
It's also just genuinely funny to me that proximity to batman makes a difference in vibes. Like next to captain paranoid doom and gloom, dick is a ray of sunshine, the traffic light, maker of puns. But next to fellow teens hes this anal professional nerd. Like bruces training is shining through in paranoia and ability. But also dick isnt the sunshine kid in this group. Contrast matters.

“Scattered Emotions” Dick Grayson x Reader
(A/N: A Part two for “Emotions Read” soulmate au where we jump back in to Reader and Dick’s new relationship and see what changes and reactions are happening. Their relationship is platonic—they’re still becoming friends! 1960s Robin time!
Warnings: Reader has social anxiety. Minor angst. Use of (Y/N).
Word Count: 5,126 words)
~~~
A sunny morning at the stately Wayne Manor and all was calm. In the main sitting room, Bruce Wayne continued reading the weekend newspaper as his youthful ward and yourself pushed through homework.
Sitting beside your soulmate on a Saturday morning was something you wanted to get used to. Truly. Homework being included wasn’t ideal, but it wasn’t terrible. It would be completed. Plus you had good company.
Two weeks since the baseball game. Two lives learning to intertwine. Two very studious people.
Even though you went to separate schools, subjects were no different. Algebra was still algebra. Languages still had many verbs to memorize. Although you both had teachers who had differing teaching techniques. That came in handy.
I’ve been here twice before now and I’ll count Mister Wayne was a teacher, you thought. He’s like an encyclopedia. In the best way. And he’s turning Dick into one.
Jotting down another answer for your science homework gave a little boost to your confidence. There was no rush to finish. No guardian eager to do more than sit around.
You felt comfortable in the Wayne Manor. They welcomed you with bright smiles and warm greetings. Pressure to start random conversations didn’t exist. You didn’t have to put on a fake smile or hide your amusement. It was wonderful.
Beside you, Dick knocked your knee with his as he hid a smile in a textbook.
Goof.
Your happy mood was not a mystery to him. Never. He could do something about it now that you knew one another. Many possibilities.
Discreetly, you tilted your wrist back and poked his arm with the eraser of your pencil. Only once.
You both brought out a playful side when in the other’s presence. Refreshing and incredibly fun.
Moments and feelings you wanted played over and over in your mind. Mainly fun ones. It did make you wonder about his average days. You wanted to know if Dick always did his school work in that room. Was he always in such a good mood? A day to see him laughing at your stories even if it was all true and not too exciting would lighten your day’s stresses, surely. What would you two do two months in the future?
Time had not sped by since officially meeting your soulmate. There was time to process the news. But there wasn’t enough hours in a day to speak to one another. It was nice still. Lovely, even. You wouldn’t change any of it. You were both having fun and happy to know the other. It didn’t matter what activity you were doing—usually school related so far.
You hoped it would last. Naturally and genuinely, you wanted the connection to be real.
A firm blink of your eyes and you refocused.
Everything’s fine. You thought, considering yourself silly for a moment. We’re the only soulmates I know. It’s fine. Truly fine. And he’s safe and doing fairly well. Really well. Mister student council. Impressive and busy. How’s he find time to sleep?
It was a wonder Mister Wayne and your guardian could schedule study sessions on the weekend. It would not be every weekend nor a random weekday. Everyone was busy.
That didn’t mean you hadn’t crossed your fingers.
Over to your right, Dick progressed to the next algebra problem. Dark eyebrows pinched together as he surveyed his options.
He might fight off ‘x’ before he finds it, you thought, amused. Or—wait. No. He still has to—it’s after—
“Holy homework,” Dick murmured.
Leaning closer, you read over the problem from the textbook. Your cheek almost touching his shoulder.
“Hmmm.”
“Yeah. ‘Hmmm” is right.” He sighed.
“Well, hold on a second. Wait.”
Starting with the first step, you checked over his work. You backtracked near the end. Double-checking where he had stopped.
“Oh.” You pointed to his paper. “You were suppose to subtract two from both sides.”
“Gosh, (Y/N).” Dick sat back against the couch cushion. “I should have remembered that.”
“Hey,” you said softly. “We’re still learning. That’s one of the purposes of school.”
“They’re right, Dick.” Mister Wayne added in from behind the newspaper. “Learning takes time and commitment. Forming a well-rounded education is a key stepping stone into becoming a contributing member to society.”
Wow.
“So true.” Dick nodded.
“That should be on a poster in school,” you announced, completely serious.
Your soulmate smiled as Mister Wayne hid his expression behind paper.
Does he always speak like this? Gosh. Was he an inspirational speaker for fun? And Dick is hearing this at home. Explains a bit.
Your guardian never gave life advice like that. Then again, they cringed any time you mentioned schoolwork. You guessed they didn’t have the best memories in association.
Before getting back to the work at hand, you glanced over to Dick once more. He took notice.
“I got ‘x’ equals four.” He turned the paper for you to see.
“Nicely done.”
His lips upturned happily. So proud and charming.
“I can make you a copy of my notes, if you’d like? I put examples.”
“Really? Oh…you don’t have to.”
“I want to. If it’d help.” You bent the corners of your paper.
“That’d be great. Thank you.”
Swirls of leaping warmth grabbed your attention. His gratefulness expressed in more than words.
It gave a little tug to your heart.
“Of course.” You smiled and pulled your textbook a closer on your lap. Eyes only glancing. You fiddled with your pencil. Anything to get back to the task at hand lest thoughts of his smile claimed your concentration.
It’s just notes. You thought and attempted reading over a question. Again.
Borrowing school notes. Giving notes to someone? It was an offer you had never given your school friends. Not once. Then again, they only ever complained or never discussed homework at all. You couldn’t blame them. Schoolwork wasn’t a fun topic. It was more tiring than anything. But Dick…was alright with it, fine even.
Dick could talk about school with light in his eyes. I just…it just is.
Not to admit that you saw a pattern, but it did appear that you spent more time with education than free time in other activities. Did you have much choice? Kind of. No wonder your guardian was just glad you were out of your room and socializing. Although, they were very extroverted themselves. So you saw why they pushed for you to do the same.
Or they’re bored. But it does go against the ‘do well in school’ household rule. Or not? You thought. Both can exits. Like mammals that can live in water and breathe air. Birds that can fly and sim. Of course penguins are among the exception.
You blinked twice.
Why am I thinking about penguins?
In one movement, you sunk back into the couch.
How did I even get there? The next question is about biomes.
Dick shifted beside you.
All it took was one look and you remembered.
The consistently bright and sweet smile of his.
What made his so different? Surely being soulmates had no effect. It was an expression.
No wonder his apology that day I came over worked so well.
Lost in thought, you hadn’t noticed Alfred walk in.
“It’s the phone, sir.” Alfred announced.
Dick leapt to his feet, excitement rapidly radiating from him. It all but startled you. His textbook discarded to the coffee table.
Alfred proceeded to whisper something to Mister Wayne.
Hesitation hit Dick’s posture as he went to turn in your direction. He wouldn’t meet your curious gaze.
What could get him so excited about a call?
Mister Wayne stood up. Professionalism coating his demeanor.
“It’s an old college chum of mine. He’s in town for a short time. He’s invited me to look over his photography portfolio of his last trip to Europe.” He looked to his ward. “Dick, this could be an excellent opportunity for you to experience other forms of art.”
“Oh.” He glanced to Alfred.
“Please forgive us for the sudden change of plan,” Mister Wayne apologized.
“That’s perfectly alright, Mister Wayne.” You smiled Kindly and started collecting your belongings. “I have some things to take care of at home.”
Stepping forward, Alfred said, “I would gladly drive you home.”
“Thank you, Al—Oh! Before I forget.” You took out a book from your bag and offered it to Dick. “The one you talked about the other week.”
“Gosh, (Y/N). You remembered?”
“Of course. You can borrow it if you’d like.”
“Thanks.” He grabbed the book. “Is it alright if I call you later?”
“Sure.”
“Great!” Dick hurried out of the room followed by Mister Wayne.
You stood there grinning to yourself as you felt your soulmate’s expanding excitement, but there was an unexpected uneasiness lurking. Partially odd for him. You reasoned it was the sudden end of your visit and decided it best not to dwell on it. He was still happy.
“He really loves learning new things, doesn’t he, Alfred?”
“Indeed.”
✧ ✧ ✧
A tall cave ceiling and expansive area of incredible technology lay ready. In the center: the Batmobile.
Robin slid down his designated Batpole. Landing softly, he exhaled. He felt a bit torn. The further he moved to his destination, the more he noticed.
Jumping into the Batmobile gave him a thrill and a sense of duty. A routine. Ready to help and solve a case. To bring justice to Gotham City.
Not a word was spoken as the engine roared. It was time to be the dynamic duo.
Giving an excuse in order to head over to check out brewing trouble wasn’t new. However, lying to you gave a nasty twist in his stomach worse than lying to his aunt. It was so much harder. He knew he should have better prepared for it. What they did was for your safety as well. He would have to be grateful that he didn’t feel distaste, anger, or annoyance from you after he left. That gave him room for relief.
They really meant it was alright.
Speeding down winding roads, the Batmobile gave Robin time to reflect and think.
Study sessions were becoming regular, but how many would be interrupted?
He wanted your blooming relationship to be smooth. No complications to distance you two. He had barely known you a month, he didn’t want to chance spoiling it. He liked you. Everything he knew thus far intrigued him. From your study habits to your taste in music, there was much to know.
Dick was thrilled to have found his person who he’d share his inner most thoughts with. All considering they sensed each other’s feelings, he figured they could share more if they were each comfortable. He didn’t want to hide everything of himself.
It’s different with them around, he thought. Even Aunt Harriet was thrilled to see me with a friend over, but she’s wanting to know more about them. I can’t blame her. So do I.
Taking a glance to his left, Robin saw Batman’s focused expression. More serious than earlier. No newspaper in sight.
Bruce was happy to schedule study dates, er, hours. Robin leaned into his seat more. (Y/N) seems to like it.
Education was important. Bruce wasn’t about to let either one of the young soulmates forget that nor let their habits drop. He basically welcomed you to the household.
Even Alfred was delighted to see you in Dick’s life and in the manor. You brought a unique light of your own; as he told Dick.
The youth felt a giddiness just thinking about it all. What happened was real. He was lucky to have noticed your emotions as he first saw you. Not everyone could interpret in the moment. Perhaps it was due to the experience he gained as Robin.
His life held growing responsibilities and learning opportunities. It was the secret ones that made him worry about you.
Being Robin meant protecting.
He did not want to burden you with knowing. Having you worry or at risk for knowing he was Robin was not something he was willing to live out.
Even if it meant pushing down an emotion, he couldn’t let you know his hero identity.
✧ ✧ ✧
Midday light struck you as you exited a local bookstore. Shielding your eyes with one hand, you held a bag of books. Treats you were willing to share. Dick had recommended one of them some time ago.
Adjusting to the light took a minute. Thankfully the sidewalk wasn’t busy.
I didn’t mean to spend more than an hour, you thought. Time flies when you’re absorbed in finding good reads. And when I’m not paying attention.
You dodged a woman’s purse and picked a direction.
Home for lunch. I told Alfred I would.
“Oh.” You stopped in your tracks.
There, parked by the sidewalk was the Batmobile. No hero in sight. A variety of citizens stood by the vehicle, curious. Amazed.
Guess I’ll hear about it on the news later.
You took a step to the side in hopes of navigating around the people. Their distraction left them blocking a majority of the sidewalk.
Your mind was apparently your distraction.
A hand touched your shoulder. A quick prevention from bumping into one another. A green glove.
“Sorry—.” Words were cut short as the young man looked at you.
The absolute surprise in his blue eyes matched the sharpness coming from your soulmate.
He froze.
No breath came from you and no words for that matter.
The Boy Wonder was staring at you and you at him. An unlikely meeting.
“Robin.” Batman’s voice tore through the thick confounding moment.
Cape billowing behind him, Robin bounded off towards the Batmobile.
You blinked as the black vehicle raced away.
“What the heck just happened?”
No, no. No, no, no. Not real.
Your mind went full throttle with connecting the dots.
Same hair style. Eyes. His voice. Just a word. Holy—
You weren’t sure you were ready for that ride of information.
A secret! You thought and hurried in the direction of home. No one knows Batman and Robin’s identities. No one is suppose to! It protected them. Their loved ones. The mystery brought fear to criminal minds. They. Are. Heroes. Fighting crime! They’ve been against the Penguin!
Walking faster, your emotions overpowered those you sensed from your soulmate. Heart pounding in your ears the whole way.
Please let me be imagining things. Please.
✧ ✧ ✧
Speeding back to the Batcave to analyze a clue, Batman had his hands full.
“Deep, slow breaths, Robin.”
The youth’s grip on the windshield and seat was concerning.
“Focus on a ten count. Breath.”
The thumping of Robin’s heart and the whoosh of wind battered his eardrums.
…seven, Robin counted and stared at the road ahead. He could hardly hear his own thoughts.
He closed his eyes and all he saw was you. Wide eyes seeing straight through his mask.
Taking in a sharp breath, he restarted his slow breathing. Concentration for the case felt miles away. Robin placed a hand on his abdomen.
It’s like vines are coiling my insides—with thorns. I can breathe, but…
“I’m worried, Batman.” He let his gaze roam all of the buttons and switches.
“I know, old chum. I know.”
Robin held on through the ride. On the inside, under the mask, Dick Grayson’s fears were highlighted by his soulmate’s emotions. Shock, anxiety, and panic all mixing together with barely a filter into him.
Breathe, (Y/N), please.
✧ ✧ ✧
Hours later, a late afternoon snack was well deserved. Being home the whole afternoon gave you ample time to pace and stare at the wall to collect your thoughts. And eat. All after hiding in your room for a couple hours with the music blasting louder than your thoughts.
I’m ready to sleep, you thought. I must’ve sent Dick a storm of emotions. Way to go.
Sipping on some water, you glanced up to your guardian who sat on the adjacent armchair.
“Glad to be home?” You questioned, voice neutral.
“My feet are happy I’m sitting down.”
“I’m sure.”
“Did you have fun today?”
“Uh, yeah.” You thought back to sitting beside Dick and quietly getting each other’s attention. “I finished all of my work too.”
“That’s good.”
And I’m still trying to stop thinking about the high probability of Dick being the Boy Wonder. What am I suppose to do with that? He saw my face. He knows I wasn’t calm.
“You really like visiting the Wayne Manor, don’t you? You’re more eager to go.”
“Yes. They’re really nice.”
“I’ve never seen you take your homework anywhere else.” They laughed, amazed. “Or compliment everything. Can’t say the same about the trip to visit my cousin and you’ve known them for a least ten years.”
“I don’t have much to talk about or do there,” you reasoned.
“True, but you haven’t been to that one friend’s house in months. The tall one. Not the one with ripped jeans. They love having you over.”
You sighed quietly, suppressing a groan.
They keep inviting me over, you thought with a grimace.
Information needing to be told. No time like the present.
“Well. I don’t like going.” You stated flatly. “Every time I went over, their dad interrogated me. He doesn’t think I’m that good. He keeps trying to figure out what’s wrong with me. And he keeps questioning if I ate.” You explained as shortly as possible. “I can’t just sit or have fun. It’s ridiculous.”
Your guardian was silent. Their eyebrows set in a deep frown.
“You don’t ever have to go there again,” they said firmly. They looked at you seriously. “Why didn’t you tell me before?”
“I don’t know…I guess, that’s just how it was and I had to deal with it.”
“Absolutely not. Thinking you’re a bad kid,” they scoffed. “If I see him, I’ll give him a piece of my mind.”
“Yeah. And I’d rather not go, especially now because….uh.” You shut your mouth. Thoughts switching to how that friend in particular was judgmental of others and you did not want them to know about your new friend—your soulmate. “Well, nothing I do there is normal for them.”
And I’d rather them not make outrageous and stupid claims about Dick Grayson. They don’t know him.
You leaned your head on your hand. Completely ready for the day to be over.
In the other seat, your guardian muttered. Spilling out frustration for the other adults from the forefront of their mind.
“It’s no wonder you like visiting the Grayson boy. He’s all smiles when he sees you. Very polite.”
Tiredly, you answered shortly, “Yeah, he is.”
In a final huff, your guardian reached for a snack on the coffee table, however stilled their hand at the sound of the telephone ringing. They sprung up from their seat and headed to answer the call.
You stifled a laugh.
Their demeanor changed, however underneath their light voice answering the phone lay someone ready to start a heated argument.
At least I never have to go to that house again.
“It’s for you.”
What? Why?
The confusion must had shown on your face because they sent you a smirk.
Your heart nearly leapt from your chest.
“Who?”
They only gestured for you to get over there.
Please be Dick Grayson. Please be Dick Grayson. Pl—wait. What would he need to say? No.
Placing the phone on your ear, you focused on one word.
“Hello?”
“(Y/N)? Hi. It’s Dick.”
“Hi.”
“I wanted to apologize again for this morning. I’m sorry we had to end our….time short.”
Standing there at home, you were receiving waves of nerves from him like an incoming tide.
“It’s fine. Really.” You assured him. “Did you like looking at the pictures?”
Because I definitely saw you in a mask.
“I did,” he answered quickly. “How was your day?”
“My day was productive.”
“Productive?”
“I might have spent about an hour or so in a bookstore.”
“Oh.”
A tickle of amusement came from him. Light and airy.
“And I bought a few books and I think you might like one.” You twirled the cord of the phone around your finger. “So I got that too.”
“Thank you. You didn’t have to get me anything.”
“Well, I, uh… You know what? How about this? If you won’t read it, I definitely will.”
You heard his light laugh from on the other end.
“Sounds like a good read, uh?”
“I’ll let you judge it for yourself.”
“I’ll look forward to it.”
You were more than glad the conversation turned into something more light-hearted. Books were an easy topic. You definitely could not bring yourself to ask him about being Robin. Not even hinting at it. That was not a conversation to have over the phone. Especially with your guardian less than fifteen paces away.
Your grip on the phone relaxed a fraction.
Entertaining him with a story came naturally. For that, you were grateful and relieved. Another tale from school you forgot to mention that morning. One about a cobweb in the back corner of the science classroom where a spider proudly named Jorge lived. Updating Dick on how a student tried feeding the spider, but the teacher stopped them as they were climbing the counter.
Sure, school days could be boring, but you managed to witness a few wild occurrences. It gave Dick something to think about, you were certain. If not, he got a laugh out of the story.
All nerves were forgotten enough to not be felt.
Was it guaranteed that neither of you would ever mention Robin? No.
Could you act regularly while knowing? You hoped so. There were many other things that tended to gain your attention. A few being: new books, possibility of more phone calls with Dick, fresh dessert, and literally knowing your soulmate.
You would always consider yourself lucky in that perspective.
“Hey, Dick?”
“Hmm?”
“Thank you for being you.”
✧ ✧ ✧
A cool, cloudless evening settled above the Wayne Manor. Inside, the young ward Dick Grayson sat deep in thought.
Dick hadn’t seen his soulmate in practically a month and found himself missing you more than he anticipated. Calls weren’t quite enough in the two weeks, however he never complained.
Yet his calls did not go unnoticed.
When he and Bruce were out of the house, Aunt Harriet had been asking questions. Alfred had informed him again not too long ago. It was a giant reminder that he held another secret.
Golly, Dick thought.
“Bruce.” He said just above a whisper. Quietly, he watched as the man set down an old volume.
“What is it, Dick?”
“I need to tell Aunt Harriet about (Y/N). I want to tell her, especially now that we’re not busy.”
“It’s your call, Dick. If you’re ready.”
“I am.” He stood up. “Aunt Harriet should know.”
“What should I know?” Aunt Harriet walked into the sitting room.
Her abrupt entrance made even Bruce get to his feet.
“Perhaps you would be more comfortable sitting down.” Bruce said calmly and evenly.
“Oh?” She let her nephew lead her over to the couch. “Is everything alright?” She looked between the two.
“It’s good news.” Dick informed her and sat beside her. “Just…big news.” His hands clenched together.
“Alright.”
“I found my soulmate.”
Her eyes widened.
“It’s (Y/N).”
Aunt Harriet gasped loudly, “Dick Grayson, are you sure?”
“Yes, I’m positive.”
“Oh!” Opening her arms, she brought him into a hug. “Why on earth didn’t you tell me sooner?”
“Forgive us, Aunt Harriet,” Bruce explained, “we had to be absolutely sure before telling you.”
“Gracious me.” She softened, emotional. Releasing the boy, she raised a hand to her heart. “I just can’t believe Dick found his soulmate. And at his age!” She hugged him again and squeezed him tight for a moment longer. “And they’re so sweet.”
And a great person. Wonderful! And as nervous as I am about people knowing.
“Aunt Harriet, I need to ask you to please not tell anyone.” Dick held her hands between them. “I’m not ready for more people to know.”
“I won’t tell anyone. Not one.”
Dick allowed himself to fully grin.
“Thank you. It really means a lot to both (Y/N) and I.”
Her smile doubled at that. Consumed by joy. Too soon, her curiosity took over.
“Why haven’t they been around lately? Are they alright?”
“They were studying for a big test,” Dick explained. “They’re fine.”
Disappointment did linger from when you had to turn down an invitation to the manor. Understanding your need to study at home and not with him didn’t take much effort. You couldn’t be together all the time. Dick knew your decision impressed Bruce with your studying.
Aunt Harriet seems to be both disappointed and glad. It’s great. I just want to know how well they did. Dick thought. And see them. It feels like months have gone by. I hope they’re not still troubled after seeing Robin.
A hand patted his own.
He glanced up.
“I am very happy you told me.” Pools of unshed tears shined in his aunt’s eyes. She sighed softly.
One less secret.
Dick sat back against the cushion.
“It’s too bad (Y/N)’s been busy,” said Aunt Harriet.
✧ ✧ ✧
Gotham City illuminated the night.
Comfortable in an armchair, you were smiling to yourself once more from a burst of your soulmate’s joy. You flipped a page in your biology textbook.
Something must be happening, you thought. He’s been in a really good mood for the past couple of hours. Kinda wanna know what it is.
Not too far from where you read, your guardian spoke on the telephone. They had been chatting since some time after dinner.
You were simply glad of your ability to tune them out. Being cooped up in a room with a textbook again wasn’t high on your to-do list. You’d erase it if it was. You had plenty of that in the past two weeks.
Knocking on the front door startled you.
Holy heart palpitations.
Setting the textbook aside, you headed to check it out. Quietly of course. It was an unexpected guest after all.
You peeked through the peephole and saw your well-dressed soulmate.
Dick!
Unlocking the bolt quickly, you swung open the door.
Standing in cleanly pressed clothes was Dick Grayson. No mask or cape to hide himself. Only an unabashed smile.
“Hi?” You could laugh at how happy you were to see him.
“Hi.” He beamed, his expression brighter with each second he looked at you.
Moving aside, you gestured him inside.
He held up a book after you closed the door.
“You’re returning the book you borrowed?”
“Yes.”
“After eight o’ clock at night?” A small laugh weaved into your question. “There wasn’t any rush.”
“I know.”
Taking a moment to review his surroundings, Dick asked, “Where do you keep your books?”
Right! First visit. And he’s alone? Wait. Why’s he alone?
Dick held the book in front of himself patiently. Always so patient with you.
“Over here.”
You walked him passed your guardian who waved and into a small room. Two bookcases, art on the walls, and a desk were the main decorations in the room.
Is he alright? He must be fine. He’s been nothing but happy. You thought as you stood by the desk.
As if on cue, his voice grabbed your attention.
“Do you spend a lot of time in here?” He asked and handed you the book.
“I’ve basically taken claim over the desk on weekdays.” You set the book down.
That incredibly charming and contagious smile of his appeared. Warm and genuine.
Why’s his smile so distracting? It’s kind of unfair. I have questions!
“You came all this way to return a book?”
“Yes and to tell you something.”
“Yeah?”
Color me intrigued. Did he set a record at school?
“It’s nothing bad,” he said. “I promise.”
“I trust you. Now, come on. What is it? You’ve been on cloud nine for hours. I’m curious.”
“Oh. Right.” Dick’s smile turned sheepish. “Today I told Aunt Harriet about us being soulmates. I hope that’s alright. She was excited and asking where you’ve been.”
“She was excited?”
“She likes you.” He reassured you. “I asked her not to tell anyone and she promised.”
Relief flooded you like a warm bath.
“Aunt Harriet was talking about you through most of dinner.”
“Oh boy.”
“She likes having you around too.”
“Too?”
“Everyone does.”
Oh-kay. That’s a lot. Good though.
You ducked your head for a moment to collect yourself.
“I guess I’ll have to go over soon.”
Each ounce of Dick’s joy passed through to you immediately.
“I hope so.”
“We’ll figure something out.”
Almost too quickly, your thoughts roamed back to your guardian. They loved how you were spending time at the Wayne Manor. Going to be with anyone instead of being by yourself made them proud. There was just something bothering you. The unknown.
“I still haven’t told them,” you announced and gestured towards the door. “I just…the time’s never right.”
“I understand.”
“Thank you…for the hundredth time,” you murmured, “for understanding.”
“We don’t have to rush. We agreed on that. Tell them when you feel ready.”
You nodded.
He’s right. It’s fine. I can take my time telling them and he—goodness—he doesn’t have to tell me anything about running around in a cape. I can barely watch the news. He’s out there.
“(Y/N)?”
Dick gave you a concerned look.
Exhaling, you calmed yourself and stepped into his space. Without a word or sound, you hugged him tightly. He returned the gesture tenfold. Each of you pouring your relief into one another.
It was the first hug you two shared.
Time ticked away; yet neither of you were willing to let go. Not yet.
Every day you were reminded of the other. Emotions were never silent for long. Each morning was a healthy reminder that the other was there, somewhere. A friend and teammate in life no matter how it was navigated.
You didn’t have to be alone. Dick wasn’t a stranger. All could be as you two wished in your little corner of the world.
Neither of you had a word to say as you walked him to the front door. The door was left ajar.
Taking a step forward, you pressed a kiss to his cheek. A soft silky feeling filled your chest, like it didn’t need any more than what it was. It could exist without words. A soothing nature keeping all safe and unhidden.
“Goodnight, Dick.”
“Goodnight, (Y/N),” he said softly. A tender look in his eyes.
Holy butterflies.
(If you love my writings and want to support me, I have a Ko-Fi where you can buy me a coffee. I would be eternally grateful.
Ok I can only remember the bee pissing scene from bayverse, tell us about the subtext of his muteness 🎙
Those are… not unrelated, astonishingly! lmao.
It's long been noted by people watching the films that Bee, especially in the first few Bayverse films, is often treated differently to both the human characters and the other Autobot characters, in ways that become quite strange when you think about them for any real length of time. The first two Bayverse movies especially present a very particular masculine adolescent coming-of-age fantasy, and a part of that is the way they kind of blend both 'a boy and his car' and 'a boy and his dog' narratives seen in American fiction of that type. With Bumblebee being both 'the car' and 'the dog' in this situation, the way he is presented veers around a lot across the course of these films- and it tends not to be the same as the way, for example, Sam is presented. But also not how Optimus, also a robot, is. So what gives?
To take a step back, think about how a horse in the stereotypical 'horse girl' movie is framed, narratively speaking. They're usually presented in ways that are very unrealistic as compared to real life horses, of course, to the tune of making them 'more intelligent' (that is, more humanlike in their intelligence) than any real horse actually is. (Horse girl movies of a certain type often present horses as near psychically intuitive regarding human emotions, lmao.) But unlike in a film that anthropmorphizes animals in the sense of, say, Disney's Robin Hood, this doesn't render them functionally equivalent to human. It brings them more within the human characters' spheres, reduces the conceptual distance somewhat for the sake of storytelling and theme and wish fulfillment, but like. The horse in a horse girl movie is still a horse. Just a very idealized version of a horse that can better serve as an extension of something about the main human character.
People joke, but Bumblebee really kind of is the macho version of the horse in a horse girl movie, at least in the 2007 film. And that would be more a statement on how the movie sees its Autobot characters than anything- as action setpiece enablers first, a fantasy of owning a cool robot that is also (sort of) your friend second, and full characters a distant third- except then basically none of the other Autobots we meet later are framed like that. They other Autobot characters are like… very clearly framed as people. Shallow characters, sure, and people the narrative is only invested in as far as their ability to create inciting incidents for action scenes go. But Optimus Prime in the 2007 movie is not a character one can imagine in the role of Bumblebee in that same movie, serving as a car that fulfils the teenage fantasy of both 'owning a cool robot' and 'having something that acts like a friend but can't leave or disagree'.
This would be primarily interesting as a weird internal inconsistency and not inherently a negative if not for one thing: the muteness. There is a degree to which this process is facilitated in the audience's mind without immediate, overt cognitive dissonance the moment OP shows up and starts making speeches by the fact that Bee is rendered distinct from the other Autobots by that muteness. It's the most striking difference between Bee and the others, and it stands as the most obvious point of divergence in how the audience is expected to engage with these characters. Muteness, alongside other expressions of non-verbality, is often used in film in ways that present it as somehow implicitly dehumanizing. Mute characters are often depicted as less human than other characters on that basis, even if only on a subtextual level: from the degree to which it is sometimes used in horror film to suggest some creepy 'something's wrong, people should be talking' angle to examples where any character who cannot talk in a way deemed sufficiently coherent is assumed to be in some capacity 'childlike', and more besides. [Sidenote: that's not an inherent contradiction; media often uses child-ness as shorthand in dehumanizing ways.] Sometimes these are literal, such as in the way horror fiction will often present non-verbal autistic characters as 'uncanny' or 'creepy' and supernaturally endowed in ways intrinsically linked to how their autism (and non-verbality) renders them as Other, and sometimes they are more figurative. But the end result here is that rendering Bee mute is enough for the film to assume its audience will not chafe too hard mentally when he is treated a little less like a person that characters like Optimus Prime, and that, needless to say, is a troubling assumption!
Which brings us back to the uh. Pissing scene. Why is that scene there when it's so, so weird? Because it's not Bumblebee framed as a person inexplicably robot pissing all over a guy. It's Bumblebee the very-smart-but-not-quite-a-person car-dog pissing on a guy. And if you understand the movie is swinging towards that latter understanding of who Bee is to the audience in that scene, it makes way more sense.
(Sidenote: I have said Autobot and not Cybertronian here because the distinctions in how Autobots and Decepticons are presented, and how that plays into this whole thing of 'shifting degrees of personhood for the nonhuman characters', is a WHOLE thing, and a very interesting one to boot!)
Baker Thief by Claudie Arseneault - DNF
I have to admit I didn't give this one much of a chance. I got it in a Rainbow Crate so I felt compelled to at least try to read it, but it's just not my kind of thing, and I DNFed at page 4. Really didn't like the writing style.
Idol Minds by KT Salvo - 2.75/5 stars
Almost DNFed this when I was about 50 pages from the end because it very abruptly lost my attention. I never really liked either of the main characters so I didn't care about their breakup or HEA. Also the sex scenes were weirdly short but also repetitive, somehow?
Fevered Star by Rebecca Roanhorse - 3.75/5 stars
I will be completely honest and admit that I could remember almost nothing of the first book when I started reading this the other day. I remembered that I really liked it, and that was about it. This one was...good?
Ok, so, let me see if I can put this into words. During the pandemic, authors kept writing, right? Especially if they were under contract to produce a series. And for some authors, that was fine. There is no discernible difference in their work. And then other authors, it's like...the anxiety brain fog got baked into their writing. There's nothing technically wrong with it. Things are happening. The characters are still engaging. And yet...sometimes it just feels like...things are happening. Like the author couldn't really process the emotions of the things happening, and thus couldn't really write feeling into the work? So it becomes just Things Happening. And I know how I should feel about it, but I'm not feeling it. Like when the dose of your antidepressant is too high, and you just have no feelings? It's sort of like that.
On the Rooftop by Margaret Wilkerson Sexton - DNF
There's nothing wrong with this book, tbh—it's well written with an interesting setting, characters with depth, and a theme that should, in theory, interest me. That said, I just wasn't feeling it. I won this book from my local bookstore and it's the sort of literary fiction that I read all the time in my teens and early twenties, even though I never really enjoyed it? I'm a genre fiction kid, as it turns out.
My Dear Henry: A Jekyll and Hyde Remix by Kalynn Bayron - 4/5 stars
I really really liked this, and I probably would have rated it higher, except it fell into the trap that a lot of queer retellings of classics do: in being forced to hew to a plot line from a century or more ago, a lot of story and character depth has to be jettisoned. This book did a much better job than The Henchman of Zenda by KJ Charles, but I still found myself wanting a more modern storytelling style. Overall it was really good, though.
Less is Lost by Andrew Sean Greer - 4.75/5 stars
I hated Less for most of the time I was reading it (but it didn't bore me, so that's something). When I got to the end and realized it was a romance, I ended up loving it, but I had to split the difference in my rating, haha. This is the direct sequel and I loved it. It's laugh out loud funny (which I did not find Less to be most of the time) and melancholy, but at its heart is also a love story.
When the Stars Go Dark by Paula McLain - 4/5 stars
A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske - 5/5 stars (reread)
I loved it even more on the reread. I would die for Edwin and Robin. I'm crazy excited for A Power Unbound.
Hoarfrost by Jordan L Hawk - 4.25/5 stars
Such a Quiet Place by Megan Miranda - 3.5/5 stars
I never know how to rate thrillers because honestly, they aren't my genre. This was part of the batch of books I won at trivia from my local bookstore. It was good in that it held my attention and was entertaining (and a bit creepy), but like, I don't know that I'll tell people that they simply must read it. But yeah, I read it in a day, so it's a quick read.
Spell Bound by FT Lukens - DNF
Ugh. Reads like my fantasy epic I was writing when I was 14 (see also: TJ Klune's Verania series). When I'm mentally editing the book as I'm reading, you know that's a bad sign. The first chapter could have been like, 2 pages (instead it was 18). Here's how Chapter 3, which introduces the other main character begins: Summer was such a waste of time and effort. Spring was okay. Autumn was the best. Winter wasn't bad.
Okay???? Great??????? Why do I care? I read for another page after that. Lukens is an author I really, really want to like, but the last two books I've read by them are just obnoxious. I could forgive The Rules and Regulations for Mediating Myths and Magic because it was one of their first books (it might have been their first?), but this...is not their first book, yet that's what it reads like. I suspect this is a manuscript they wrote a while ago, shelved, and brought it back out now that they're having success.
Heart of Dust by HL Moore - 5/5 stars
You know when you read a book that's so good, and you can't figure out why the hell you had to stumble across it by going down some algorithm recommendation rabbit hole? This is one of those books. Gritty and unique sci-fi setting, a backdrop of labor rights, aching gay mutual pining? Please read this.
REVIEW: Babel by RF Kuang
A quick disclaimer before we start- this book impacted me very heavily, and because of those strong emotions I think I have to include some spoilers in this review to process what I felt in the book’s heaviest moments. You’ve been warned!
Robin Swift was taken from his homeland to become a scholar. Thanks to his powerful and mysterious guardian Richard Lovell, an 18 year old Robin becomes one of four new undergraduate students at the Royal Translation Institute, aka Babel. He meets his cohort- dazzling Ramiz Mirza, fierce Victoire Desgraves, and posh Letty Price. From there, an unbelievable, years-spanning epic of magic, academia, love and betrayal.
I’ll start by saying that I absolutely loved the magic system in Babel, because it’s so simple- words are power, just like they are in the real world. I think this works beautifully to illustrate Kuang’s main arguments about colonialism in the book, because it literalizes the way that empire depends heavily on those they exploit, even while proclaiming their colonies less than. I really appreciated the care that was taken to explore multiple schools of thought regarding the best way to fight oppression. None were explicitly “wrong” because both theories- Victoire and Anthony’s nonviolence and Griffin and Robin’s violence- were more than justified in the context of the book. Obviously, this mirrors real life. As someone who talks politics in leftist circles, I hear both ideas come up. Do we disobey quietly, lobby our politicians, and wait for slow incremental change? Or do we fight, scream, burn, demand to be seen as human? There’s no right answer, but I think the fictional environment of Babel is a good outlet to explore these questions, and Kaung does it expertly.
Ok, now that my academic, poli-sci major baggage has been laid out, I’m gonna get a bit sappy. This book WRECKED me. I cried. So. Much. In the style of a Shakespearean tragedy, just about every single character that you fall in love with through the first three hundred pages of this book will be taken away from you. (Spoiler time!) I want to write about Ramy’s death specifically. Just as Robin and Letty fall in love with him at the first hello, so did I. Ramy was a character that simply shone so brightly that it reached far off the page. Kind, passionate, brilliant. OF COURSE two of the three people around him were madly in love. Letty’s betrayal (especially Shakespearean) and her goddamn revolver took Ramy from us, and in the midst of my reading I felt like the world was ending. Even worse, the most emotional moments come dozens of pages later. Robin and Ramy clearly loved each other. It was perhaps unrealistic to believe that they could have a happily ever after in 1840, but I thought at least they would get to be honest with each other about how they felt. Instead, Robin is left alone to grieve, to wonder how Letty, who “loved him almost as Robin loved him”, could take away the person who defined his world. Kuang invokes Ramy’s name almost like prayer. Robin turns to it in his time of most need. It hurts, like, reaaaallly hurts. I’ll think of them every time i see a sunset now.
Last thoughts. This book is nothing if not a five star read. It’s somehow a love story, a dark academia fantasy, a Newsies-style tale of the underdog, and more. It’s a found family that could never last. I can safely say that it’s one of the best things I’ve ever read, despite how much pain it caused me. There’s so much more I could’ve said, but I’ll leave it here.
READ THIS BOOK!!
Chapter Breakdown: Putting the "Fun" Back in "Funeral" C3
HIHIHIHI!! I'm going to be breaking down some parts of my Dead on Main fic's, Putting the "Fun" Back in "Funeral", third chapter. This one was a doozy to write and I kind of wanted to break it down and put out my thought process behind a few things? It seemed like fun and honestly I need a writing warm-up haha.
Anyways, onto Chapter Three: Emotional Constipation has Never Been Easier!
This chapter opens up with Danny zooming out of the Ghost Zone and into his home dimension. It has a scene where he's flying above the cloudbed before dropping down past the storm clouds in a way that is vaguely reminiscent of skydiving, or jumping off of buildings (in like a heroic way nOT IN LIKE A IM GOING SIX FEET UNDER WAY). "Phantom, why did you put this in here?" Well, I wanted to give a little nod to "Into the Spider-verse"! This story has some of the same themes - a superhero coming of age while traveling across dimensions. Having Danny give gravity the middle finger was one way I knew I could sneak that little hint in there, and I think it turned out pretty well! The storm, on the other hand, was just written in there because while I was writing the chapter a thunderstorm was brewing. There was a lot of dramatic lightning flashes and I thought it would be visually appealing (readingly appealing??) to slap that in there!
"Wow Phantom, Danny had a very depressing childhood!" Yeah, yeah he did. This is a bit of a coming of age fic combined with a slowburn romance and healing fic. Danny's childhood wasn't easy - something that IS canon - and having him actually have to think about how his parents failed him helps brew the distrust Danny has in them. The idea of "knowledge is power" combined with how they act equals Danny expecting failure on their part. He has come to fully believe his parents don't care about him or Jazz. "... not noticing their greatest failure hovering in front of their greatest success" Danny thinks he is his parent's greatest failure, despite him literally dying in order to get their "greatest success" to actually work. It's a simple truth, thought maybe a bit misguided, that Danny values in his life. Showing that Danny has been hurt by his parents' inventions, neglect, and actions just drive this deeper.
"Is Danny immortal?" Wellllll yes but no but yes. Danny can still be killed, don't get me wrong, but he's going to be aging at a slower rate. This is brought up in C3 during Danny's talk with his Ghostly Therapy support group - and something that will be brought up again. Accepting the fact that Danny, who has strong ties to the Human and Ghost worlds, will outlive at least one side of himself is something he struggles with. This is a large part of the "coming of age" story arc.
"Jason and Dick have such a great relationship, but he seems to have some issues with the rest of the Batfam, what gives?" Well! When I was growing up I was able to read some of the original Batman and Detective comics - meaning my first impression of Jason was that he was a redheaded circus boy. In those comics Dick was actually able to pass down the Robin mantle himself, Bruce was emotionally competent, and the three of them had a great relationship. With that in mind, I love to see Dick and Jason actually be brothers. They're my favorite duo AND they have a great parallel to Danny. Pulling from the "greatest failure and greatest success" vibes from Danny's thoughts on his parents plus the portal, if you compare that to Robin #1 and #2, you have Bruce's greatest success (Dick, who is a strong leader, good sibling, and manages to VERY RARELY act out in mindless anger) and compare that to his greatest failure (Jason, who he wasn't able to save, who he thought killed a man, who died only to come back so much differently) it draws a wonderful parallel of life and death. In like a vague way. But! Jason needs someone in his corner and Dick is that man. Because we're going old school, baby!
"Jason's POV was very short this chapter" Yup, it was. The main point of Jason's POV was to show that he was okay after being all loopy and that his relationship with Dick's is different than what is the current DC canon. I did this over Thai food and dragon movies for uh... totally no reason. Whatsoever. No foreshadowing and plot thickening here. Just... happy dragons, happy boys, and comfort food :)
"What's up with Danny's outfit change?" Legit I just gave him the kingly outfit for plot reasons. It'll be important later on - trust me - but for now accept that he's a cute little starboy. I have some concept pictures in regards to why I chose what I did, but unfortunately it's kind of spoiler-y :(
"Wow! The Ghost Zone is really changing!" It is!! Many people pointed out in C1 how Danny's coronation carried weight to it, how you all could tell it was important. And it was, and the GZ changing is just showing more of that weight. I've pretty much spent the past three chapters laying together the groundwork and foreshadowing to just what being the Ghost King means to Danny. Part of that is healing the GZ and making it better for his people. The Keep changing (and wow I love being able to name-drop myself in my fics) is only a small part of the reconstruction the GZ is going under. It's great and I'm super excited!!
"Why did you mention the tapestries?" WELL, if you follow me on this hellsite you might remember a post I made a while ago about spending hours creating a political atmosphere for the GZ! The tapestry is hinting at the politics behind the dead, important plot points in the future, and why the Realm is changing. I want you guys to be able to keep reading this fic and have an "oh!" moment where you put the pieces together.
"Oh my god Danny's rich" - said by Faust/Aerois, my lovely beta. Yes, Danny is rich. In my opinion there's already enough fics out there where Danny has to survive on the streets which is something I'm not really looking to do on here. It's also a plotpoint! Keep in mind that Danny's got that great amount of wealth :)
"I love the line Goin' Gotham" SAME THO! It's also me being sneaky and referencing the collection "Going Gotham" on AO3, which is full of DPxDC fics that I love. Also Danny is a dork and he would totally say that because he is a dumb little babyman and I love him.
Anyways, that's it for the chapter breakdown! I'm hoping to do more of these in the future though I can't say I will be doing them for every chapter I post. Hope you all enjoyed the chapter and the breakdown :D
Hey!! I absolutely love your writing. You always strike such a good line with emotion, characterization, and background character management (I'm looking at that scene where Will is running book on Steve and Eddie). I was wondering what your writing process is like? You just fit so much in so seamlessly and its just so good.
aw shucks thanks -- that means so much!! also this got long so i'm dropping it under the cut so i don't clog up people's dashes, and folks can ignore me rambling pretentiously about The Process lol.
(i should also preface this with saying that i am a very type a person, and i like lists + guides, and the idea of writing a story without an ending in mind makes me want to break out into hives.)
(and also everybody is different!! write how you want to write, write what you want to write and what makes you happy, and have fun, and if you find something valuable in this, that's awesome! if you don't, that's awesome too!!)
so my personal background with writing comes from playwriting, specifically, and then screenwriting, so i feel like i come at it from that angle a lot? or, at least, it informs how i think about structure + storytelling + planning...
when i'm getting started, i like to do a sort of logline, which helps solidify the main story thrust for me; often these will become my summaries, which you can see for "remarkable" specifically + also the regency au.
from there it depends on if i want to do a one shot or something with parts. if it's a one shot, i'll expand the summary and write out the major events that i want to happen in a list; if it's a multi chapter project, i'll write out the major events for each chapter. for example, here's what i did for the first three parts of the regency au:
part one: introductions to steve + the harringtons, loch nora manor, robin, the town; we go to market day, listen to some gossip, begin to see a little something going behind steve’s mask part two: the new tenants arrive + steve, robin, chrissy go to say hello; eddie is introduced; we also get a glimpse into something that happened to steve post-eddie, that only mrs hopper (nee byers) and max (hopper’s ward) seem privy to part three: steve finds himself becoming part of the hopper family’s day to day existence, after the children find out he is an excellent rider, all of them demanding lessons from him on his gentle bay mare bimmer; steve is slowly befriending hopper’s demon horse as well, is determined to ride it at some point; he attends a few dinners with the hoppers, etc etc; two encounters of note: one with mrs hopper, and one with eddie; we also introduce heather in this part as a potential love interest for eddie
this is also when i write out the list of characters i'm using, and the roles i want them to play in the story. another regency au example: "joyce: a former governess, now his wife – knows steve’s darkest secret from when she was a governess for the hargroves ". depending on the story, these will be more fleshed out here + there in an attempt to make sure everyone has some sort of internal life i can reference, even if they're not the main focus of the story. sometimes this gets unwieldy; i have a genuinely insane document in my google docs called "remarkable apocrypha" that details the lives of the kids and other characters off screen for that story.
if we're covering a lot of time, i also write out my timeline around this step for any prior major events that may have happened preceding the story, so that i can easily reference them + make sure i'm internally consistent with said timeline.
also, if there's any specific research i want to do for the story, i do that around this time too, and give that it's own google doc. (each story or universe has it's own folder in my drive, so i can manage it easier lol.) i compile any musical influences, or mood boards, here too to get my vibes in line. (i talk a little about that here in reference to titling stories.)
after i have those written out + organized, i do an outline; these typically look like the diary of a crazy person, to be totally honest. it's stream of conscious stuff, lots of asides to myself, occasionally actual lines and phrases that i want to use. it's really about fleshing out smaller events around the main beats that i want to hit with the story-telling. having written all the character + timeline stuff previously, i pick + chose from there too to add any background color for people, or throw away jokes (specifically like will running book on them in "remarkable").
once i have the plot completed, i'll start writing in earnest, using my ramblings as a guide post. obviously, things change. (if you're reading the regency au, you'll see above that the part three summary makes no mention of the dance -- this idea appeared when i was outlining/plotting it out.) sometimes my ideas don't work, or sometimes i think of something else to add, and i need to shift some stuff around to make something make sense. sometimes i get long winded and end up writing 8k about a fictional dnd encounter and have to add an entire extra chapter to something because i've lost control of my own life! shit happens!!
all of this to say: this is why i find all the leg work i do leading up to writing the actual story super valuable, because if i write myself into a corner, there's usually something in there that helps me get out; or, if i'm writing + posting in real time, it helps me adjust course + fine tune ideas based on reader feedback or observations or, indeed, those verbal sojourns into nonsense (but fun) interludes.
then, after i get a part (or a story, if it's a one shot) finished, i let it marinate out of sight for a few days before i circle back. this is when i like to read it on a different device than i wrote it on -- personally, i write on a laptop and then read it on my phone. something about the way it looks helps on a different screen helps me see it in a new light as i begin the first phase of editing. i also like reading aloud here and there, because that also helps me catch typos or overly repetitive lines, and if the dialogue actually sounds like a human being and not too overly poetic or pedantic.
i edit it myself a few times like this, switching between devices and sometimes just even changing the fonts or background colors (i'm in dark mode constantly on my phone and it's a white background on my laptop), i'll try to send it off to one of my homies for a final pass + edit from a different set of eyes. usually, tho, i'm pretty happy with it at that point -- usually by the time i'm writing, i've worked out most of the bugs through the outline or the idea generation stage, but sometimes someone will suggest different pacing, or moving a scene around.
finally i set it free in the world (and catch a few new typos on the ole ao3, naturally) and anxiously await the approval of the readers like i'm sweet dee in "it's always sunny". (tell me that was good tell me tell i'm good tell me i'm good tell me --)
anyhoodle. i hope this answered the question, and i hope if you got to the end of this there was something interesting in it lol.
Bc, some people think those moments were meant to draw a contrast rather than a direct parallel.
People think that Will being in between Mike and El's scenes is not necessarily there to imply that Mike likes Will but rather is there to show Will's unrequited feelings, because Will was blurred whereas Robin was at the center of the scene where we watched her visibly being sad but Will was not sad, he was blurred in the background and when Mike and El have a forehead touch moment, he is entirely out of the picture.
Also, people do not exactly notice which music plays at which scenes. Only if they are interested in analyzing or searching, then they can find. Another example is, we know about the 'tender emotional music' because we focused on that and then made an analysis, but even then that wouldn't necessarily look like byler proof to the other parts of the audience, esp when that same music also plays for a melvin scene in one of the scenes where they talk.
It's also that Dan and Vickie broke up but Dan is just some random character, whereas El is a main character and we have been following Mike and El's relationship for seasons (that's how the audience thinks), and they gave Mike a huge monologue, whether or not we argue that it happened due to Will, it still happened. Even if Mike and El do not exactly talk, it does not look like a byler proof for some people but it rather looks like a casual relationship drama which will be resolved in S5 like Jonathan and Nancy's underaddressed situations.
I am saying this bc while I am a byler shipper and I think the narrative has a chance to make Byler fully canon, I also have many queer friends or in general friends who belong to GA, and I can also understand their points when they say that they do not see byler happening because majority of the proof that we have seem far-fetched, random or delusional to them.... or just not enough of proofs in general.
yes i literally just said i know people find it harder to believe in byler because main characters are involved in the love triangle whereas dan and vickie are side characters, and that’s as far as i’ll get their sentiments.
about all your other points, yeah i know that these are all reasons why people from the GA think most byler proofs are farfetched...but it doesnt mean their arguments are valid and understandable though lmao. the rovickie/byler parallels aren't even that hard to pick up on, and if it was only meant to contrast the two relationships then will being out of focus while robin isn’t wouldn’t be the ONLY thing different about their scenes cause everything else is pretty much identical to each other, mike and vickie even have similar conflicted expressions when they look at will and robin (and its ON THEM for not noticing that). also even if will is blurred out he still stands out the most cause he’s dead in the middle of mike and el’s faces and his figure immediately draws your attention (heck he was the first thing i noticed as a casual viewer while watching vol 2), which makes no sense for someone who’s supposed to be just “entirely out of the picture”...and about the monologue. something tells me its just double standards against a queer ship cause this isn’t exactly the first time a character seemingly professes their undying love for another character but still ends up with someone else 🤔
what im trying to say is yeah its true that they have all these reasons for not believing in byler endgame but at the end of the day...how am i just supposed to understand the points they have when they’re the ones who cant read into things that aren’t supposed to be very complicated when you have common sense, and i dont really think their thought process/reasonings are particularly strong anyway. also in this context...the rovickie/byler parallel is literally one of our least “random” byler proofs that just came out of thin air, its very much in your face so 😭 i guess i’d understand if you were talking about other more tiny background hints in relation to this topic but this one is pretty blatant...sorry for going into a tangent
Duke Thomas or maybe jason todd
Okay, so initially I was planning on doing both, but I got carried away with Duke, because I never get to talk about him on here, so now you get to hear all of my pent up emotions. Enjoy! <3
Tumblr media
I'm not going to lie, this one tripped me up a little bit, and after a lot of consideration, I've made up my mind. But I want to explain the thought process a little before I tell you what it is. Duke's main personality trait, in my opinion, is how insanely strong willed he actually is. And I mean that in a bigger sense than just his determination to fight. When the whole Robin War thing happened, he was the one to go up against a Rogue Damian Wayne, which... the idea of that is terrifying in itself lmao. As if Damian's not naturally feral enough, BUT baby boy Duke Thomas was fucking relentless until he was able to convince Damian to see reason and come with him.
He is often portrayed as the most laid back one out of all of them and I think a part of that is because he's more prone to following Bruce's instruction, because his training is still fresh compared to the rest of them, but he is a chaotic ball of sunshine. This is the kid that literally just jumped off a bridge to run from the police. The same one that actively decided (on more than one occasion) to go fuck up some criminals who haven't even had their coffee yet at the crack of dawn, because why not.
He's caring, enthusiastic, eager, passionate. Any synonym of any of those words, it's him and you can count on it. He continues to drive himself forward in a way that ignites his spark and he's so psyched to be doing it. He also gets left out of too many Batfam narratives, because he still has two living parents, but he cherishes his found family dearly.
And he has one up on every other member of the Batfamily. He is super direct and upfront about his feelings. I feel like he probably internalizes a lot from the people around him, but when it comes to what he's feeling at any given moment- if he's scared, having anxiety, or pissed off, he's not afraid to admit it. He knows what he's capable of, but he also knows his limits.
That being said, those fears aren't enough to pin him down or discourage him. He's going to keep going. He's going to keep fighting and falling and laughing and smiling along the way.
This is the really longwinded way of saying that no matter what kind of shit he gets himself into, he is the embodiment of 'just happy to be here' and that's why his song is On My Way from Brother Bear
stranger things s4v2 spoilers under the cut
So we watched the episodes last night and i’ve been processing after being a little less upset.
yes, most of the rant is going to revolve around Eddie.
So my main issue is that Eddie died in vain.  His death ultimately meant nothing in the grand scheme of things.  It was only to prove to himself that he ‘wasn’t going to run’ this time.
To be the hero instead of ‘the freak’
Bestie, you should have run it’s normal to run away from demon bats
And it’s all in vain, and in the end, he’s the only one of the main characters to die in the fight against Vecna. That is probably what pisses me off the most.  The duffers were saying “oh there is going to be five deaths, prepare to suffer cuz your fave is going to die.”  and most of, if not all of us knew that meant Eddie was going to be one of the five.  It’s obvious.  The duffers do not know how to create that tension with out introducing a character that is beloved (Bob, Alexei) and then killing them for the drama of it.
But when everything was said and done, none of the main cast was left permanently dead.  Max died, then El brought her back, she might not wake up, but shes alive.  Eddie just, bleed out in the upside down, with Dustin by his side.
All to try and stop Vecna from opening the gates.  And then Max died and the gates opened anyway.
So, Eddied died in vain, the thing they were trying to stop happened regardless and he really. did. not. need. to. die.
I’d really but less upset if literally any of the other main cast had also died in the fight.  Like, max should be dead, i feel like steve, nancy or robin, one of them at the very least should be dead (if not all of them, why didn’t the vines kill them right away if vecna knew the plan and what they were coming to do?????). In russia, i was fully expecting one of them to bite it, most likely murray, but nope they all survived.
And then, after everyone's out of the upside down, no one even cares that Eddies’ gone?  No one mentions it, grieves over him? They didn’t think to tell Mike when he got there, that Eddie had lost his life in the fight? does annyone else in helfire care?
the only people that show any emotions of it at all are Dustin and Mr. Munson.  Everyone one else in town still thinks he’s a cult leader and a murderer.  I dunno, just feels wrong and bad that Eddie sacrificed himself for a town that hates him so much.
and i’m assuming they just left him in the upside down.
He died for nothing and i’m just upset about it.
He just wanted play d&d and graduate high school.
