The Pacific Ocean was overflowing the borders of the map. There was no place to put it. It was so large, wild and blue that it didn't fit anywhere. That's why it was left in front of my window. The humanists worried about the little men it devoured over the years. They do not count. Not even that galleon laden with cinnamon and pepper that perfumed it as it went down. No. Not even the explorers' ship---fragile as a cradle dashed to pieces in the abyss---which keeled over with its starving men. No. In the ocean, a man dissolves like a bar of salt. And the water doesn't know it.
Pablo Neruda, "The Sea," tr. Dennis Maloney and Clark Zlotchew, reprinted in Things that Dream: Contemporary Calligraphic Artists’ Books / Cosas que sueñan: Libros de artistas caligráficos contemporáneos (Stanford University Libraries, 2012)

The Best American Science Fiction & Fantasy 2022 edited by Rebecca Roanhorse (guest) & John Joseph Adams
Tumblr media
4 out of 5 stars.
This is a collection of twenty of the best science fiction and fantasy short stories published in North America during 2021 as selected by guest editor Rebecca Roanhorse, author of "Black Sun", among other books.
A Netgalley ARC provided courtesy of HarperCollins, the scheduled publication date is November 1, 2022.
Contents:
"10 Steps to a Whole New You" by Tonya Liburd "The Pizza Boy" by Meg Elison "If the Martians Have Magic" by P. Djeli Clark "Delete Your First Memory for Free" by Kel Colman "The Red Mother" by Elizabeth Bear "The Cold Calculations" by Aimee Ogden "The Captain and the Quartermaster" by C. L. Clark "Broad Dutty Water: A Sunken Story" by Nalo Hopkinson "I Was a Teenage Space Jockey" by Stephen Graham Jones "Let All the Children Boogie" by Sam J. Miller "Skinder's Veil" by Kelly Link "The Algorithm Will See You Now" by Justin C. Key "The Cloud Lake Unicorn" by Karen Russel "Proof by Induction" by Jose Pablo Iriarte "Colors of the Immortal Palette" by Caroline M. Yoachim "The Future Library" by Peng Shepherd "L'Esprit de L'Escalier" by Catherynne M. Valente "Tripping Through Time" by Rich Larson "The Frankly Impossible Weight of Han" by Maria Dong "Root Rot" by Fargo Tbakhi
A fantastic collection of stories with varying degrees of fantasy and science fiction woven within. The collection, in my opinion, tends to lean more towards fantasy or a mixture of the two rather than pure SF. A couple even have subtle touches of horror elements.
The main focus of all the stories is people, not hardware, not technology, and not magic, although all three do enter into the kickoff of many of the stories. People, as all really good SF and Fantasy should center on, their emotions, their reactions to what is happening, and their interpersonal relationships to others. Some of these stories touched me deeply, one made me cry, and all made me think.
In all honesty, I couldn't pick a favorite. In various ways they all had something important to say, many of them falling under the increasingly popular and widespread environmental science fiction subcategory. Would I recommend this collection and to whom? Yes, most definitely I would to all readers who like thought provoking fiction, no love or even experience with SFF required.

some of my favorite agents of shield fun facts (season 3 edition) (part 1!!)
season one & two fun facts are on my page!! this may be the last season i do though :)
- the little tagline they used in the writers room for season two was “what will i become?” to reference skye’s new powers and learning about her family, coulson’s new position as director, and other character changes. in season three the tagline became “what have i become?” showing the characters evolution into season three and onwards.
- many of the writers also said that the season focused on emotional balance between characters. it was focused on the emotional connection between may & andrew, daisy & lincoln, coulson & rosalind, and fitz & simmons.
- after being taken by the monolith at the end of season two, elizabeth got no confirmation that jemma was alive and she still had a job playing her until being brought back for season three months later.
- the writers were a bit unsure of mack’s character evolution after season two but when they saw henry simmons acting they immediately saw “leading man material” and began to discuss him as a possible director.
- they had a “skye jar” in the writers room when writing season three because everyone kept forgetting daisy and writing skye.
- apparently jed & maurissa’s newborn guest starred in the first episode [03x01] sometime during the opening scene with joey. i watched the episode on Disney+ and i couldn’t find her though, maybe y’all can! [the bts picture i found has her in a blue stroller, dm me for the pic if you want!]
- the inhuman lash is played by matthew willig, a former NFL offensive tackle. he was chosen because not only his huge stature but his previous acting work. he had to take 4 hours in the makeup chair daily for the role.
- the character rosalind price was created to give coulson a role other than “the surrogate father”. both the writers and clark wanted to give him a romantic role. however, when they talked about her to the costume department they described her as a “female coulson”.
- as skye was written as the “eyes of the audience” in season one and bobbi was the same for season two, the writers created the character of joey gutierrez as the eyes of the audience of season 3 with inhumans.
- the writers created the relationship between daisy introducing joey into shield/inhumans to mirror coulson introducing skye into shield back in season one.
- joey’s character was supposed to be a more permanent character in the following seasons but actor who plays him, juan pablo raba, had just booked another show and he couldn’t do both.
- according to the costume designers, they describe coulson’s season three look as his “bad ass civilian look”
———
i am working on more season three facts rn, but i wanted to post some now!! also i wanted to take this time to show my support for the writers currently on strike (some of which wrote the scenes we love in aos!), they ask so little for the amazing work they do and i hope they get what they deserve in the near future !!

MAWS getting a comic series? didn’t see that coming
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one!
Tumblr media
Josie Campbell is writing and since she's the head writer for MAWS this should have no problem capturing the elements that made the show great. Pablo M. Collar on art, don't know him but long as he isn't too big a departure from the style of the series, I'm sure he'll do a fine job.
In the new comics series, Clark Kent is spending Christmas alone in Metropolis when he gets a tip about a monster in the sewer that absorbs anything it touches, and investigates the mystery with Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen.
Campbell says this aims to bridge the gaps between S1 and S2 with material they didn't have space for in S1. From the synopsis it sounds like we're getting another take on Parasite? Sure sounds like him, maybe this will be a more traditional Parasite to contrast with Ivo. My preferences for this series is that we get some of the Superman villains the show won't have room/space to use, more expansion on the Clark/Jimmy friendship since the Clois romance is the main focus of the show, and more love for the Daily Planet crew. MAWS has such a fantastic take on Perry, Steve, Cat, and Ronnie that I want to see more of them! Steve got a great showcasing in S1, if they don't have enough time/space for the rest in S2, then flesh one of the other Planet reporters out here.
Oh and if you must have the other DC heroes show up - do it here. The Batman Adventures comics introduced a non-canon long haired Superman, this can do the same for a MAWS Batman or (my preference) Wonder Woman. You can use them here without ever having to worry about being beholden to the comics if people don't dig the take. Also I don't want them to ever appear in the show (ok maybe in S5 they could appear), hopefully letting the weirdos who expect a Batman cameo in everything get a cameo here will shut them up.

[OMINOUS HANS ZIMMER MUSIC PLAYS]
we must finish... what we started.....
Tumblr media
yes, fuck it. you only live once and you only get the chance of wreaking havoc in a dying social network twice. to those of you who were here last year, you know the drill. to those of you who weren't, the idea is simple: we will have a champions league style tournament to decide who is the hottest of them all. the official tag will be #hottest drivers tournament 2022 in case you want to make edits and posts - the fan engagement was the best part of last year!
the first official round is on wednesday, 8 pm GMT+1, so in the meantime you can submit your fave driver for consideration either in my dms or in the replies to this post. i will maintain the list from last year as well just in case (behind the cut), but we can always add new drivers to the list! the one change i'll be making is that there will be a bot controller from the first group stages round to keep things breezy and light running. may we all have a happy summer break!
ps: pls don't send hate or talk shit behind my back this year, i have been doing therapy so i'm dealing better with personal issues but poor Odette doesn't need to hear about this insanity!!!!!
