They end up flirting a little, if only to ensure the deal goes through but Forrest is just **fuming**. Maybe pushes the silent man to finally give voice to how they feel about reader.

Forrest sat nearby, making sure that things went smoothly as he swigged back his coffee slowly, watching you keenly; he had always been keen on you, ever since he met you a few years ago, as a few friends of yours often used his… other services from time to time and had been loyal customers. Forrest liked you from the moment that he had met you, and although he knew that his fondness was more than reciprocated, he mostly stayed away.

He didn’t want to drag you into the unsavoury side of his life, even if you didn’t mind and kept telling him such. But that was years ago, and now you were his right-hand, his partner in more sense than one, and he trusted you as much as anyone else, even if that fondness had still gone largely unsaid; he kept a close eye on you, though, watching as you dealt with the newest prospect.

Some guy from Texas who wanted a part in the bootlegging business; Forrest figured he would let you do most of the negotiations, his brothers counted you as family the same way they would a spouse, so no one saw an issue with it except for the fact that Forrest never actually told you how he felt about you. Until the guy put his hand on you, leaning in closely as he grinned. 

“Y’know, I never thought I’d find someone as good lookin’ as you in these parts,” he chuckled. “Let alone someone with common sense.”

You looked at Forrest, who didn’t seem to react much, so you shrugged and figured that it would benefit the business to encourage him a little. “I could say the same, Sir, y’know, we’ve been looking for someone smart enough to deal with… you seem like a good fit.”

“Yeah?” He hummed, not realising that he had taken it a step too far when he put his arm around your middle, about to pull you close until Forrest got up. He pushed the guy away from you, scowling as he narrowed his eyes and shook his head. 

“Off limits.”

The guy furrowed his brows, tilting his head to the side. “The fuck is your problem?”

Forrest huffed, shoving him outside and locking the door. He quickly pinned the other guy to the ground, straddling his waist as he punched him as hard as he could; Forrest may have been passive for the most part, but when he got violent, he could truly get nasty.

He didn’t stop even when he felt bones break and teeth fall out, even when his knuckles were bleeding and his arms were getting tired. He got up, and started to kick the guy with all he could given that his boots were falling apart and breaking. 

“Off limits. They are off limits.”

He didn’t stop until he was sure that the guy had gotten the message, and only then did he turn away after the guy had run off; quickly, Forrest wiped his knuckles and his face off, wanting to be presentable to you and not wanting you to know what he had done.

He cleared his throat, coming back inside and slamming the door behind him; you didn’t flinch, having seen Forrest lose his temper more than once, you knew he would never hurt you. 

He turned to you, shaking his head as he clenched his jaw. “What was that?”

You shrugged, raising your brows slightly. “He was just being friendly, I figured it’d help if I went along with it - besides, I’m my own person, aren’t I?”

He rolled his eyes. He couldn’t help it, mumbling quietly as he chewed at his lip and tried to hold it back, but it slipped from the back of his throat without him realising. “I wish you weren’t.”

“I beg your pardon?” You scoffed. “What the fuck did you just say to me?”

Forrest didn’t answer, going back to his chair as he huffed and went to grab the newspaper, but you stopped him, glaring at him. “Don’t.”

“No,” you shook your head, kicking his legs apart so that you could stand between them. “Forrest. What the fuck did you say to me?”

“Said I wished you weren’t your own person,” he mumbled, glaring up at him.

“So what?” You hissed. “You want me to drop everything and be with you, even though you don’t fucking want me?”

“Never said I didn’t…”

“Oh, please,” you scoffed. “You’ve made it pretty fucking clear - you’re always telling me I’m family, I’m just a good friend to you.”

Forrest wasn’t thinking as he grabbed your sides, pulling you down onto his lap and crashing his lips against yours; he felt guilty for it, even when you immediately kissed him back, one hand in his hair and the other on his jaw. He pulled away, avoiding your gaze as he clenched his jaw.

“Mister Bondurant,” you laughed softly. “Jealousy is a good look on you, y’know.”

He dared to look at you, blushing a little as he cleared his throat. “I’m sorry. I should’a asked.”

“Don’t be sorry,” you told him, shaking your head. “I liked it, and if you’re gonna kiss me like that every time you get jealous… that works for me.”

He couldn’t help it, smiling a little as he nodded. “You sure?”

“Forrest Bondurant,” you hummed. “We have been friends for how long, now? You really think I would say something like that if I wasn’t sure?”

Forrest shook his head slowly. Not really sure what he was supposed to do. “Do not leave my side. Ever.”

“Tell me how you feel,” you told him. “And then I’ll think about it.”

“I love you.”

“I won’t leave you,” you whispered, ghosting your lips across his. “Y’know how many times I’ve done this? Flirted with other men?”

He shook his head, he wasn’t really sure if he wanted to know.

“But every time I have,” you started, “all I can think about is saying that shit to you, and having you touch me the way they do.”

“Yeah?”

For all of the northerners that stood up for Texas during our freeze and said, "Don't make fun of them, they've never dealt with this before. Their infrastructure isn't made for snow and freezing."

This one is for you.

Where I live 108°F with 80% humidity with no wind is normal.

Pacific North West is dealing historic best waves 35-40°C or 95-105°F.

First of all. Don't make fun of them for bitching about the heat. Just like Texas isn't built for a freeze and our pipes burst, Pacific North West isn't built for heat and a lot of their homes don't have AC.

If you live somewhere with a high humidity like 80+ HUMIDITY IS NOT YOUR FRIEND. The "humidity makes it feel cooler" is a lie once it gets beyond a point.

If you live somewhere with a lower humidity, misters are nice to cool off outside.

Once you get over 90°F (32°C) a fan will not help you. It's just pushing around hot air. (I mean if you can't afford a small AC unit because they're expensive as hell, by all means a fan is better than nothing).

Window AC units will let mosquitoes or other small bugs in. Sucks, but that's life.

Now is not the time to me modest. If you have to cover for religious reasons, by all means. If you don't, I've seen people wear short shorts and a swim top. It's not trashy if it keeps you from getting heat stroke.

If you do have to cover up for religious reasons, look for elephant pants or something similar. They're made with a breathable material.

Shade is better than no shade, but that shit it just diet sun after some point. Don't think shade will save you from heat stroke.

I know the "drink your water" is a fun meme now, but if you're sweating excessively you need electrolytes. Drink Gatorade, Powerade, or Pedialite PLEASE. I don't care if you're fucking sitting in one spot all day. That shit WILL save you from heat stroke.

Most importantly. RESEARCH THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HEAT STROKE AND HEAT EXHAUSTION PLEASE!

If you're diabetic and can't drink Gatorade, mix water, fruit juice, and either lite salt or pink salt

If you can afford it, cover windows with thick curtains to insulate the house

If you have tile floors, lay on them with skin to tile contact. If you don't, laying your head on cool counters works too.

If the temperature where you're at is hotter than your body temperature, don't wear heat wicking clothing. Moisture wicking is safe though.

Check your medication labels. Many make you more susceptible to sun and heat

-Room temperature water will get into your body faster. This is something I learned doing marching band in high summer in Georgia, and it saved all of our asses. Sip it, don't gulp it, especially if you're getting into the red; same goes for whatever fluid you're drinking. And just in general drink during the day.

-If you are moving from an air conditioned space to an un-air conditioned space, if at all possible try to make the shift gradual. When my dad and I were working outside and in un-ac houses a few years ago, he'd turn the air down to low in the truck about ten-fifteen minutes before we got where we were going. This way your body doesn't go from low low temps to high temps. S'bad for you.

-If you can, keep your lights off during the day. Light bulbs may not generate a lot of heat, but the difference is noticeable when it gets hot enough. I literally only turn my bedroom light on in the evening when it gets too dark.

Don't be afraid to just like... pour water on yourself if you need to. The evaporation will cool you off.

Put your hand to the cement for 15 seconds. If you can't handle the heat, it'll burn your dog's paws. Don't let them walk on it.

Dogs with flat faces are more prone to heat stroke. Don't leave them out unsupervised.

Frozen fruit is delicious in water.

Wet/Cold hat/handkerchief on your head/neck will help you stay cool.

Pickle juice is great for electrolytes! You can even make pickle juice Popsicles!

Heat exhaustion is more, "drink water and get you cooled off." Heat stroke is more "Oh my god call 911."

The big story of the day is Liam's Happy Hour podcast (it is uh neither one hour nor all happy but OKAY) in which as he says, they “really did talk about anything and everything.” For those of you who are new to the experience of Liam being given a lot of time (over 100 minutes in this case) and not interrupted or made to answer the same four Qs over and over, honestly? He gives so much and is so charming and it's wonderful, but also trigger warning for mental health struggles and substance use at the very least, if not for the way they all were treated by management as very young people besides. He has been through a lot and is still dealing with a lot of really hard stuff, and he's very aware and savvy about how the tabloids treat his painful revelations, and yet he continues to be vulnerable and open publicly, when no one could blame him for choosing not to (WELL they definitely could and would but I wouldn't.) It's a true gift he gives to us who are so hungry for personal knowledge and behind the scenes detail, even though we have also been the source of so much stress for him. “How shit is the world if you can’t cuddle Liam Payne?” asks the podcast host and...yeah. I think we'd all like to do that today!

Anyway, onward! Liam talks about his mental health struggles, as he has done before, about the anxiety he has dealt with about being in public and about feeling watched even at home, and the things that made him feel that way such as people crowding around his house and banging on the windows for example. He mentions again the meds he used to be on that had “to do with happiness... to not feel so numb all the time” that made him have dissociative episodes as a result of stage lights sometimes and blank on lyrics, but the really good news here is that unlike the last time it came up this is a past tense story! He says he is not taking that anymore. But he says he always uses a prompter now because he still worries about messing up onstage, and not everything troubling is past tense: he says “I surround myself with people that bully me at some points, but not in a nasty bully way... very lad humor kind of thing. We’ve a laugh, you know?”. I GUESS... but actually can we just not bully Liam at all please? :(( He says he always tries to make time for fans but sometimes he just can't handle doing it, but also talks about how much he's enjoyed all the new social media stuff he's been able to do over the last months. “When you are in the postion I'm in and have this lovely fanbase, you feel like you're communicating with them in the right way,” he said about his attempts to connect with us, but says the middle men make that hard. He says he loves doing the youtube videos because “if I've anything I want to say I can just say it myself without somebody being in the way.” He says he stopped doing it as a weekly quarantine times roundup because he wasn't really doing enough stuff to round up, YEAH: relatable!

He continues to be our sole source of 1D behind the scenes tidbits (and Louis gossip)-- about band days he talks about how he and Louis struggled over who was leading the band but learned to work together, about how they were so young at the beignning that they just thought their tour manager was the boss of them and let them tell them anything to do, including just being confined to hotels for days at a time because it was easier for the higher ups. He tells about management telling him he was going to have to take the role of the “the person that sometimes people don’t like”, ugh poor Liam, and being made to be “a weird One Direction narc” by management. He says that “the day that they signed their contract with their label they got one of the biggest telling offs ever, but he can’t tell the reasons why it happened”, ummmmm, and that he can't stand to watch The X Factor now because he knows what doing well will do to someone's life. “I was part of this machine and I knew my part in the machine,” he says, “Towards the end of the band I became like ‘the loud drunken one’ and I was very good at that too.” But on a lighter note, Louis stories!! Liam says they talk a lot and tells a great story about Louis telling someone in a store 'no I'm not Louis Tomlinson! I just look like him!' and them being like nah actually you're better looking than him LMAO. Compliment or insult NO ONE KNOWS but it figures it would be Louis himself they'd say that about; it simply wouldn't make sense about anyone else. AND FINALLY he told us something that was very much news to us; he says he proposed to Maya last December when he was in Texas visiting her family. He says he worked it out with her mom and took her to restaurant where she was surprised by a room full of flowers and him waiting to propose. A picture of her in a room lined with red roses and full of candles from around that time was found and is assumed to be from that. (They announced their engagement in August of this year.)

Other things did happen too, though (thankfully for us updaters) not too many of them. Liam posted more of his art-- it's the Queen in watercolor! And it's super cute and expressive and how is he so good at art?! In about 16 hours a behind the scenes video from Niall's Royal Albert Hall show will post! Harry followed Silvia Calderoni, the star of the Gucci fest shorts, and “a representative from Gucci” says they think Harry's appearance “might have been an improvised moment.” Well yes I thought it was unscripted too, that sounded like Harry and like Harry when he's talking himself rather than delivering lines, but there you have it from someone with I guess more authority than me. But it doesn't sound like how Harry talks when he's REALLY off script and reverts to his cute teen Harry style-- exhibit, a model from the Watermelon Sugar video who was clearly excited to have gained access to Harry's DMs posted a screenshot of her chat with him. She compliments him, and he says “faaaaaanks”, lol, she asks him who Golden is about (??? girl WYD???) and he replies “hiiiiii not telling you.” Funny that, I could have sworn there were loads of articles that have the answer to this and it was super public knowledge or something, HUH HOW ODD. Almost like that's ...not true? Peculiar!

“Ah guys, should we wake him up?” Prentiss asked, with pity in her voice.

“No. He could use sleep after the case,” Hotch said tersely.

JJ lifted herself up with the armrests of her seat to see Reid move, and repeatedly shut his eyes tight together in his sleep. “Poor baby, we should wake him up.”

“Looks fine to me.” Rossi said, not looking up from the notebook he was scrawling into.

“The kid hasn’t been sleeping well recently, and he won’t talk about what’s up with him.” Morgan nodded in, pulling one ear bud out.

Reid was laying near the back of the jet, eyes squeezed shut and knees pulled up to his chest. The leather seats squeaked with every movement, but not loud enough to wake him. He held his shirt in fists near his face.

“If we wake him up you guys have to promise not to treat him like a baby.” Prentiss said.

“I would never,” JJ crossed her arms.

“Just last week you asked him if he needed to go to the bathroom before we got in the car. And Hotch, you told him he needed to go home and take a nap to be less cranky.”

“That was one time, and it was an accident, it’s just that I do it all the time for henry.” “And he was being cranky.”

“No, he isn’t your guys’ child, he is an adult, even though he weighs the same amount as a chubby 12 year old.”

A whimper came from the far side of the cabin, causing the arguing to stop. Their hearts broke for him; everyone had the nightmares, it was par for the course, but they could still sleep. Reid on the other hand seemed as though something else was off, and he wasn’t one to ask for help, so they would just be left guessing.

“I like messing with the kid, but I hate seeing pretty boy hurt.”

“JJ pass me that,” Prentiss said, pointing to a crossword puzzle book across the table. JJ slid it over to her.

Emily picked it up, and walked over to where Reid tossed and turned. “Hey, Reid, wake up!” She whisper-yelled to him.

He gasped and grabbed for the hand she had placed on his shoulder. His chest stopped heaving, as he searched for her eyes, but the second he found them he was grounded. “I was having another nightmare wasn’t I?” He looked around to see a room full of eyes quickly divert from his direction. “I didn’t mean to bother you.”

“No, it didn’t bug us at all, actually I wanted to get some help on this uh, uh, this question.” Prentiss said flipping to a random half finished page in the crossword book. She sat next to him, shoulders touching, allowing him to lean on her for the remainder of the plane ride.

JJ took this time to text Garcia, canceling the girls night that was already planned and changing it to a more inclusive night, inviting the boys as well. They had enough alcohol for the lot of them, if they could limit Emily. It’ll be fun, they can figure out what was wrong with Spence, or at least let him get to sleep while still being there for him if he needed them.

“Hey Reid, you free tonight?” JJ asked.

“Yeah. Why, do you need me to babysit?” He said, as he spun around in his chair to see her.

“No, no, no. We wanted to see if you would like to come over to Garcia’s for some drinks, and we’d all probably end up spending the night.”

“Is this a girls night?” he said furrowing his brow.

“No, actually we invited Morgan, too.” In that second, he walked past Reid’s desk, “Will we see you at Garcia’s tonight?” JJ then directed at Morgan. “Yeah, I was promised a seat at ladies night, no way I’d miss out. What about pretty boy down here,” He said and messed up the kid’s hair.

“Sure, yeah. I can be there.” Reid tucked a piece back behind his ear.

“Great, see you there, boys.”

After work, in Garcia’s apartment, members of the team started trickling in by the half hour. Garcia, Prentiss, Morgan, Reid, and lastly JJ all found themselves standing around a kitchen of snacks and alcohol. Reid was hunched over a bowl of chips, like Smeagol, threatening any who dare take one.

JJ and Garcie were passing a wine bottle back and forth keeping their glasses full, Morgan nursed a lukewarm beer, and kept sneaking a handful of chips from Reid’s stash. Emily had a bottle of whiskey in hand, lounging on the couch. “Let’s play a game!” She yelled, and patted the couch next to her as an invitation to come sit down. 

Alcohol (and chips) were brought over to the couch, and chairs surrounding the coffee table. 

“What are we going to play?” Garcia asked, sitting down next to Emily.

“Truth or drink.” 

Reid made a face of disapproval, and then looked down at his chips. 

“You can drink for one night, right Reid?” JJ asked.

“Umm…” He stared at her.

“NO! I wanna play strip poker instead!”

“Get ready to get naked, cause I’m gonna… steal your clothes.” Penelope taunted. She got up, ruffling Reid’s hair, and walked to her bedroom to go get a deck of cards.

She walked back just a minute later, a long robe dragging at her feet. Penelope casually walked in and sat down, in at least 3 layers of pajamas. She took her seat in between JJ and Emily, and slid the deck of cards across the table to Reid. 

Spencer smirked, shuffling the deck from one hand to the other. “Texas holdem, 5 card draw, or black jack?”

“Texas holdem,” Morgan said, and scooted up knees to the table.

“Okay, I deal.”

After some rounds went on, Reid had taken off his belt, his tie, and his left shoe. Garcia was down to one pajama set; Morgan in some boxers and his socks. Both Emily and JJ were down to bras, tank tops, and underwear, and had somehow sprawled out across each other when Garcia smashed herself on the same chair with Morgan. Reid was on the floor, chin nearly resting on the table.

“Pair.”

“Pair.”

“Flush.”

“Straight.”

“Full house, I think I win again,” Reid said, and he laid his cards out in front of him. He threw his arms out to the sides, gloating, and smug.

“There’s a lot to hate about you Dr. Reid,” Prentiss said, pushing her cards to the middle of the table.

Reid grabbed everyone's cards, shuffled, and started dealing when Morgan passed his hand back, “Sorry kid, I’m out, I think I’m going to shower and turn in pretty soon”.

“Okay, you guys still in?” He asked with big, brown, puppy dog eyes.

“Ah, I might just go change.” JJ said. She handed her cards back, and went to the bedroom to get into her comfier clothes. 

“I’ll play another hand,” Prentiss started to slur.

“Yeah, I will too, I am getting cold though so I hope we can just play for fun, no clothes this time.”

“Yeah totally!” He dealt three hands only this time. They played a couple more hands until JJ and Morgan had both rejoined the group.

“Movies?” Emily said, eyes falling heavy as she leaned on JJ. Her black hair was tied into a messy ponytail, and was in a bra and boy shorts only.

The clock was nearing midnight, and at some point JJ and Emily decided to cuddle on the floor, Penelope had her head laid on Morgan’s lap as he played with her hair. “What movie are we going to watch?”

And Reid, curled up in an armchair, with blankets tossed over him said, “can we watch Star Trek?”

No one felt like arguing, because the underlying reason that they had this night in the first place was Reid. Garcie tossed a remote over and he opened up his blanket like a fishing net to catch it. (There’s no way in hell he’d have caught it otherwise.)

He hovered over the series, but didn’t click on it yet. Instead he got up to go change into comfier clothes. He came back in a pajama set that were blue and patterned, and his glasses had been put on. He walked out, and curled back into his pile of blankets. His head lay on the armrest, as the rest of him was cocooned in an array of fuzzy pinks and soft blues. He clicked on Star Trek, and turned the volume down real low.

Emily watched him from the kitchen. She toyed with the idea of waking him up, but this was seemingly the first full night’s sleep he got in a long time. She watched; as soft whimpers and heavy breaths filled the room, she sipped her water. 

Finally Spencer sat up and clutched the arm rest as if it was the only thing tethering him to this room. He furiously started wiping his eyes, “Are you crying?” he heard from the kitchen.

“What? Oh, uhh…”

Emily was sitting on the counter in the kitchen, a mug in hand, swinging her legs, and sitting next to her was a bottle of ibuprofen. “Hey, Reid, are you okay? I mean with your nightmares and all. We’ve all been pretty worried about you.”

Reid got up, throwing his blanket over the back of the chair, and sitting on a stool across from Emily. His eyes were red, and he was visibly shaken. “I’m fine, you can tell everyone I’m okay next time it’s brought up. Please.”

“Sure, yeah. But are you?” She asked, and set her mug down on the counter next to a bottle of ibuprofen.

“I uhh… I have been having these nightmares,” He said with big eyes.

“I’ve noticed. Anything you want to talk about?”

“It’s weird; I’ll be sitting at a table, a dinner table, and everyone is there. You’re there, and the team, and Gideon, and my mom and dad.” “Is it like the ones you used to have about your dad?” She asked sliding down from the counter and stealing the blanket off the chair, to wrap around Reid’s shaking body.

These are the things I know about Drake Walker. He is half American. He met his wife, Camille Montespan, at court - she was a commoner taking part in the infamous suitor competition to win the King's hand in marriage. Little awkward, I must say. Drake was awarded the title of the Duke of Valtoria. He now shares two children with Camille, his daughters Lily and Luna. In the space of seven years, he has come a long way from the commoner at court.

Having read through my colleague's interviews with him, he seems friendly and has settled into his role as Duke quite well. A surprise considering he is not of noble blood and was known as the King's best friend, riding along on his tailcoats.

Duke Magazine used to be very selective in who they interviewed. I used to meet Dukes who have inherited their title through generations and Dukes who attended prestigious boarding schools. Now, I meet a commoner who can trace half his family back to Texas and who openly admits that he hates dinner table etiquette.

We meet in a hotel suite. He looks, like everyone says, not like a typical Duke. Instead of wearing expensive designer clothes, he is dressed in a dark blue Henley shirt, brown leather jacket and dark jeans with boots. He looks like an urban dad on the school run. 'Suits have never been my scene,' he tells me, almost bashful.

Drake is perfectly nice. He shakes my hand, says its good to meet me and asks if I want a coffee. So far, polite. Good first impression. He's been taught well.

I ask him how he finds being a Duke, having been in the job for seven years now. He now sports a beard, as opposed to his clean shaven face when he first came to public attention, and he has laughter lines around his eyes. He was twenty-eight when he became the Duke of Valtoria and newly married. He smiles and settles back, relaxed.

'God, I've learned a lot,' he muses. 'Just to try not to repeat my counterparts mistakes. Be the difference. And also that I am a really overprotective dad - I didn't realise how anal I could be about parenting.'

I wonder if he has anything else in the pipeline aside from Mind Over Matter. He shakes his head. 'Not yet. Right now, the charity is my baby. I want to focus on it completely, make it the best it can be.'

Mind Over Matter has somehow managed to prove its critics wrong. I'll admit I was one of those naysayers who viewed the campaign as a glorified Boys Weekend, casting doubt over the campaign before it even began. I tell him this and he bristles.

'I don't get how people could be negative about something that is so positive,' he tells me. 'Men get emotional too. If women are feeling under pressure they may go out with friends or to a spa, and people call it self care. So why can't Mind Over Matter be viewed in the same light?'

I have to argue that Cordonia is traditional in the sense that home life is important. Husbands being away from home for days on end so that they can hike up mountains and kayak seems neglectful to their wives. Family values are the most important thing in Cordonian society.

Drake eyes me. 'I can tell you now that my wife does not feel in any way neglected. She encourages it actually. And we raise our family in the best way we can.'

Even with his justification, he is still a Duke with responsibilities who chooses to go away for long weekends to take part in Mind Over Matter. This is completely different compared to previous nobles I've met who attend palace balls and polo matches.

'I want to be a present Duke,' he explains, clearly tired of having to explain himself. 'The campaign gives me a chance to meet all types of men from all over Cordonia. I'm not just meeting Valtorians, I'm meeting everyone, and that, in my opinion, is a big deal. I want to be there for everyone, not just a select few.'

Drake clears his throat. 'Let's move on.'

We do. Does he ever feel like he has won the lottery whenever he thinks about his life?

'Very much so,' he answers. 'I often get imposter syndrome you know? Like I don't deserve any of this. I've got Camille, I've got my daughters.. I thank my lucky stars everyday.'

Drake has had to prove that he is worthy of the title of Duke more than most of his counterparts. He has dealt with a slew of negative press asking if he is up to the job.

'It was a learning curve,' he admits. 'I didn't know what to expect when me and Camille were installed at Valtoria and suddenly were given titles. We both felt like frauds which is why we've worked so hard to make a difference in Cordonia.'

They have certainly shaken things up. They are the first noble couple to pioneer their own campaigns. They talk about mental health. They advocate for women's equality. Their modern outlook is at odds with the traditional nature of Cordonia. Many have criticised them, saying that they should stick to what they're best at, which is supporting their duchy. I will admit I was one of them. It's not like Drake and Camille are qualified doctors or therapists. What can they possibly change that a professional can't?

Drake's eyes widen at this question. 'I think that's so narrow minded,' he says. 'I'm sorry, I don't mean to be disrespectful, but it is. Everyone struggles. Just because I'm not a doctor doesn't mean I can't help or offer support. I use my platform for good. I don't want to show off wealth or my title. When I lived at court, I would see so many nobles who were arrogant and looked down on those who weren't born with the same privileges as they have. I'm different, Camille is different. We want to get to know the public and hear about their issues. Why even have this role if we can't help?'

I am about to speak but he bulldozes through.

'We're changing things from the inside out,' Drake explains. So while they were working on all of that, the Wayward Sons returned to Winchester-Singer, where the Hunters stood waiting for any news. But one look at Gabriel’s face told Dean all he needed to know. It was the look of someone who had lost a brother.

“Gabriel?” Jo asked softly. He looked at her, his eyes not shining and there was not a mischievous smile on his face like there normally was. He walked past her like a zombie. Meg whispered in Jo’s ear what they had just seen, causing her to gasp. Jim pulled out a chair for Gabriel to sit down in.

They set him down in a seat and the Hunters and Wayward Sons watched him like a hawk.

“Okay, what do you know?” Bobby asked.

“It was Ramiel and Asmodeus that ordered Lucifer to be used to send a message.” Crowley explained. “They have been in talks with this new club from north of here. Called God’s Chosen. They deal Demon Blood and some new thing called Angel Grace.”

“Angel Grace?” Dean asked. Crowley nodded.

“I’ve heard it’s a mutated form of angel dust. I’m not sure though. There’s not enough information out there yet, but I guess it’s just as addictive as Demon Blood is.” Crowley explained to them. “They got the Demon Blood from God’s Chosen. He was more than happy to oblige when he found out who it was for.”

“He? He who?” Gabriel asked.

“His name is Michael.” Crowley told him. Gabriel’s eyes darkened then.

“Gabriel?” Andy asked. “What is it?”

“That stupid fucker. He’s the one that got Lucifer addicted in the first place.” Gabriel growled.

“A dealer?” Caleb asked. Gabriel shook his head.

“No. Our big brother.” Gabriel told them. Everyone just stared. “There’s seven of us guys. Scattered all over the world. I stuck around to take care of Nick...Lucifer.” Gabriel explained.

“That’s some...really deep drama.” Cas said. “Glad I’m not apart of that family.”

“How do they know about everything?” Sam asked suddenly, making everyone look at him.

“They have a mole on the inside.” Crowley explained. “I’m not sure about his name, but I don’t see him here right now. I’ve heard his name thrown around a couple times, but for the life of me, I can’t remember for sure what it is.”

Ramiel was asleep on the pool table and Asmodeus was asleep on the couch in front of the TV. Gabriel smirked and reached into his bag. He grabbed some bungie chords that he had bought before picking up the gas and started securing each door leading to the outside. He made quick work of it. They were shut up nice and tight. The next thing he did was soak as much as he could in gas. He even had a bottle of light fluid if he needed it.

If the Horsemen thought it was okay to burn people, to take loved ones away in a firey blast, then Gabriel was going to do the same. Once the gas was all gone and some light fluid has been distributed, Gabriel lit a bunch of the matches and dropped them, watching the flames dance around and start to eat at the building.

20 Warriors Questions!

1.  How did you get into Warriors?

Well, if I’m being honest, my sister started reading them first.  She checked the first book out of our school library and convinced me to read it.  I think I was in fifth or sixth grade at the time.  Yeah, it was fifth grade, because I was in sixth grade when The Last Hope came out.  More specifically, it was the summer after sixth grade.  So, yeah, you can thank my sister, @pipatyp, for introducing me to the series.

2.  Favorite arc?

Ooh, boy.  That’s tough one, especially since I’m not a hundred percent caught up.  I haven’t finished Dawn of the Clans yet, but that’s due to my two-year absence from reading the series.  I have a lot of catching up to do.  Anyway, as far as favorite arc goes, I’m going to have to say my personal favorite is either Power of Three or The New Prophecy.  I love Power of Three because I love it when there’s a sibling dynamic between major characters, especially if those characters all have their own internal conflicts.  The New Prophecy has a similar situation, but it also sets up some stuff that pays off in later books along with having my boy Firestar being a shotgun dad for five chapters in Midnight.

3.  Favorite book (excluding Super Editions, Manga, and Novellas)?

Agh!  Like I said, I’m not caught up right now, so that makes this a hard question to answer.  I guess I’d have to say my favorite book is probably... well, Twilight.  I can’t help it; despite my utter hatred of the title (I blame edgy teen vampire romance), it’s a pretty solid entry into The New Prophecy arc.  Leafpool and Crowfeather’s whirlwind romance is actually pretty believable, while Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw’s arguing is by far the most realistic thing about these books.

4.  Favorite Super Edition, Novella, or Manga?

This is another one that’s tough to answer.  I haven’t read all the Super Editions or novellas yet, but I’ve read every volume of manga the series has produced thus far.  In this category, I’d have to say my favorite is probably either Goosefeather’s Curse, Crookedstar’s Promise, or The Rise of Scourge.  Whoa, hey!  I got one of each.  Cool!  Anyway, I love Goosefeather’s Curse because Goosefeather is one of my favorite characters in the series, and it’s kind of a dive into who he is before he gets bees in his brain and becomes the laughingstock of ThunderClan.  Crookedstar’s Promise was the first Super Edition I read after Bluestar’s Prophecy, shortly after I finished The Prophecies Begin.  It was also the first book to get me emotionally invested in the series.  Yes, I cried.  Deal with it.  As for The Rise of Scourge, I’ve always been a fan of villains with backstories to back them up, and this solidified Scourge in my mind as the perfect villain for Firestar to face.  They have similar backgrounds, but not as similar as a lot of people seem to think.  This is also the only book to even hint at the blood connection between them, so there’s that.

5.  Favorite Clan?

Okay, this one’s actually easy.  My favorite is RiverClan, plain and simple.  Despite the fact that they appear to the Clan least able to keep their genes in their own Clan (Appledusk, Oakheart, and Silverstream, just to name a few), they are also the only ones that can swim.  I don’t know if you’ve ever seen a cat swim, but it’s adorable.  And I’m not saying the others can’t swim, they just won’t.  RiverClan rules the water.  Also, they eat fish, which makes their coats healthier than the other clans.  Cool.

6.  Favorite character?

Ooh, boy.  Here’s a stunningly broad category that’s difficult to answer.  There are so many characters in this series that it’s honestly hard to pick favorites.  Personally, mine is either Squirrelflight, Sandstorm, or the ball of sass and salt known as Ivypool.  Squirrelflight (at least in The New Prophecy) was a ball of energy and cunning remarks, which made her all the more fun to read about.  It honestly sucks we never got to hear any of the arc from her perspective, but we can guess a lot of her thoughts based on her actions.  Sandstorm is incredibly patient and a damn good mom.  She stands by her daughters after their lives basically get torn to shreds because of Hollyleaf and she’s also the one who reassures Firestar that Cloudtail would make a good warrior.  As for Ivypool, her struggles living in the shadow of her sibling are pretty relatable, and you just want to see her succeed.  She’s also a five-star badass once she turns on the Dark Forest, so there’s that.

7.  Least favorite character?

Hands-down, it’s either Darkstripe, Sleekwhisker, or... Spottedleaf.  And I can hear the anger now, but let me point some things out.  Darkstripe is an annoying little fanboy with a tom-crush the size of Texas on Tigerstar.  Nobody really likes Darkstripe in this fandom, though.  Sleekwhisker is a goddamn bitch as well as a matricidal murderer (she did help drown her own mother).  As for Spottedleaf, I can’t say that she’s a good character.  Her only role in most of the books she appears in is to act as a guide for Firestar or Leafpool, or in Firestar’s case, a massive roadblock in his relationship with Sandstorm.  She has little to no actual personality beyond ‘medicine cat and Firestar’s first love’ and, despite Spottedleaf’s Heart, I can’t say that I like her backstory.  As somebody who’s going into the field of education, it made me very uncomfortable and I worry for any younger kids who maybe pick up this book.

8.   Most Aesthetically Pleasing Cat?

Ivypool.  I like silver and white cats.  I think they’re really pretty.  Also, I have this image in my head of Ivypool being this pretty teenage girl who’s super skinny and looks really weak, but then she slams a fully-grown Hawkfrost into the mud with little effort.  Yeah, I don’t care how the cats look.

9.  Favorite leader?

Leafstar.  Weird choice, I know, but she’s had to deal with things no other leader has really dealt with:  the invading rats, her clan having a number of kittypets as part-time warriors due to low numbers, being pregnant and still trying to lead her Clan, and helping to rebuild the Clan from the ground up.  Not to mention, she’s still leader when SkyClan moves to the lake territories.  She’s one badass Miss Mama Cat.

10.  Favorite villain?

Mapleshade.  Like I said, I love backstories for villains, and Mapleshade’s is even more compelling and tragic than that of Scourge.  She really got screwed over by first Ravenwing, then all of ThunderClan, then Frecklewish, and the list just goes on and on.  And, the funny thing is, when you think about it, she never would’ve become a villain if Ravenwing had kept his damn medicine cat mouth shut.  Maybe then he wouldn’t have ended up murdered at the Moonstone and his body wouldn’t have been eaten by a hawk.

11.  Favorite Medicine cat?

Either Goosefeather or Jayfeather.  They’re both fun characters who have a certain amount of bones to pick with StarClan for screwing them over.  In Goosefeather’s case, it’s because of his powers and the fact that he went kind of crazy towards the end of his life.  Jayfeather is just mad for them making him blind and forcing him to be a medicine cat.  The boy wanted to be a warrior, so let him be a warrior!  Then again, the love of his life has been dead for over eight decades, so... yeah.

12.  Overrated character?

I’d have to say probably... *sighs* Crowfeather.  Despite me loving his whirlwind romance with Leafpool, he gets a little too much love from the fandom.  And no, I have not read Crowfeather’s Trial yet.  Like I said, I’m behind.  Anyway, he’s not really a good father to Breezepelt, which is painfully obvious in the way that they interact.  He was going to abandon his Clan for the sake of breaking two codes with Leafpool.  And, on top of that, he barely acknowledges the fact that he fathered Hollyleaf, Lionblaze, and Jayfeather.  He’s not a bad character, but he doesn’t deserve all the love he gets from the fans.

13.  Underrated character?

Briarlight.  This girl survived a freaking tree falling on her and breaking her spine, which paralyzed her from the waist down, and she still maintains a happy attitude.  Despite the fact that Jayfeather doesn’t make her a full medicine cat (she can’t exactly collect herbs or go to the Moonpool, can she?), she’s more than happy to assist the medicine cats that ThunderClan has by soaking dried-up herbs, handling patients who come in the early morning, and just generally improving the usually sour mood that’s in the medicine cat den.

14.  Favorite minor character?

Hm.  This one’s kind of tough.  I’d have to say Purdy.  He was never an official warrior of ThunderClan, but he was a big help when it came to lightening the mood in the elders’ den.  Purdy always had a story to tell or some sort of wisdom to pass on, not to mention the fact that he told those stories whether you wanted to hear them or not.  Kit, medicine cat, warrior, apprentice, leader, deputy--he didn’t care.  All you had to do was listen and he’d go on until you actively told him to stop.  And he’s funny.

15.  Favorite pairing?

Firestar and Sandstorm, hands down.  I know a lot of people don’t like it because Firestar still had a thing for Spottedleaf, but to me, a good pairing is all about balance.  Shipping two people with the same personality doesn’t work.  It’s why you so often see an optimist getting shipped with a pessimist.  Anyway, they balance each other out because Firestar is an idealist and Sandstorm is a realist.  Not only that, but they’re supportive of each other, and they stick by each other through thick and thin.  They became mates in The Darkest Hour and remain mates once they’re in StarClan.  The only regret they have about their relationship is the fact that they didn’t have more kits!  That’s a good and healthily-built relationship to me.

16.  Least favorite pairing?

Tigerheart and Dovewing.  It’s not because they’re from different Clans, either.  I don’t feel like there’s really balance in their relationship.  They always seem to be arguing about something, and if they’re not doing that, they’re avoiding each other because their relationship is ‘against the warrior code’.  Yeah, we all know that one part of the code has been broken so many times it might as well not exist anymore.  Their personalities, if you ask me, are a little too similar for this relationship to work.

17.  Favorite friendship?

Sorreltail and Leafpool, surprisingly enough.  It stood the test of time and Leafpool’s biggest secret being spilled, forcing her to give up her position as a medicine cat.  Sorreltail keeps thinking of Leafpool as the friend she knew back before everything went paws-up, and that line of thinking is on display in The Forgotten Warrior when she specifically cries out for Leafpool’s help while kitting.  I have no doubt that they’ll be reunited in StarClan and hunt side-by-side.

18.  Favorite moment?

I think my favorite moment so far in the entire series is when Yellowfang is first teaching Cinderpelt about herbs, and she snaps at Fireheart for upsetting her assistant.  It kind of reveals that Yellowfang thinks of Cinderpelt as a replacement for her two daughters who never really got a chance to live in the world that killed them.  And most likely, it was the daughter who died because Brokenkit poked her with his paw and it was too much for her body.  Seriously, that’s tragically funny.

19.  Most tragic death?

I’m going to have to go with a rather shocking answer and say the drowning of Mapleshade’s kits.  This is a moment that sets a lot of the series in motion, since it was the aftermath of her kits’ deaths that sends Mapleshade down a dark path.  After she dies and swears revenge on the descendants of those who wronged her, she gets into the minds of many of the most ‘evil’ cats we see in the series:  Tigerstar, Brokenstar, and Thistleclaw, just to name a few.  She also messes with the minds of good cats, like Crookedstar, making them feel like everything is their fault.  I have no doubt she’s the true villain of the series, but all the death and destruction that is brought to the clans from within--so much of it can be linked back to Mapleshade and her toxic teachings in the Dark Forest.  And her toxic teachings can be linked back to the deaths of her kits.  Patchkit, Petalkit, and Larchkit drowning was the event that set off a chain reaction that killed so many Clan cats, and it’s tragedy stemming from tragedy.

20.  Favorite battle/fight scene?

And, after four days of filling out these questions, reading A Vision of Shadows, and thinking through my answers, I have reached the final question.  I’m not a person who typically enjoys battle scenes, but I’d have to say my favorite is the SkyClan battle against the rats in Firestar’s Quest.  It’s intriguing for a number of reasons, the least of which being that there’s a rat who understands and speaks cat!  The rats are an unusual enemy because they’re essentially a hivemind--the only one that’s been fought so far in the series.  Hivemind fights are fascinating because once you take out the big brain, the rest scatter.  That’s exactly what we see!  As soon as Firestar takes out the lead rat, the Clan has won the battle and secured SkyClan’s place in the gorge.  And thanks to that, we eventually get Violetshine and Twigbranch (we are never letting Bramblestar live that name down, I swear to God).

The Vigilant Issue #1

The rebirth of an ancient bond of worlds!

Rowan Smith, a man of Forty who has done a lot in his relatively short time. To describe them all would take too long, and he’s not legally allowed to mention some of the stuff he’s done. But even with a life as exciting as his, it’s been a--Slow week for him. There was one upside but still. 

Hard not to be when he’s been marooned on Earth, by his best friend at that. Took his Detective license and didn’t give it back, he can get away with it over here with some fancy magic but over on the Magi World Eden, not so much. 

Rowan’s legs were raised and propped up against his desk. His chair leaning back as he was passing the time in his head. He had to be alert if anyone were to come through the door with something good. Any minute now, someone will come through it, too.

The bell over his door rang that someone did come in. Though in all the anticipation Rowan almost fell over himself. Come on, be something good, be something go--

It was Rowan’s best friend, the man that made him endure one of the most boring weeks of his life. And that’s counting the week he spent handcuffed, without magic and literally attached at the hip of the most boring Guardian possible.

Robert Mitchell, head of security of the Eastern parts of Eden. Dressed in his formal uniform. Formal in Eden always meant it looked more like what a Earthbound, a non-magical human would think a stereotypical wizard wears. At least, that’s how Rowan sees things.

“Before you get all up in a tizzy over what I did, just listen. Please Rowan, just listen for gods sake.” Robert didn’t even need to see Rowan’s face for him to know what exactly what he was going to try and do. Robert made sure Rowan wasn’t going to interject. Adjusting his jacket as he continued.

“There is someone outside your office right now, that are here to hire you for the most important job of your life. Trust me here, you want to take this job, and I’m talking to you as my best friend, not as someone whose job you’ve hated forever. Please. Just consider it, and don’t do your usual schtick of acting like you listen to the important shit, and then brush it off. This will make up for metric ton of stuff you’ve done, maybe even with what happened with the-” 

Robert jolts back just a bit as Rowan interrupts, thankfully not with a spell. Standing up to his friend, illustrating the difference between someone who was six feet, five inches, and someone who was five feet, eight inches.

“Don’t you fucking say it! I don’t give a shit what this job is, in fact all this holier than me bullshit you’re pulling might just make me pull my usual shit. This is my goddamn place of work AND where I sleep, and I ain’t about to let you treat me like I’m somehow lesser than you here. Some of the shit you guys in your lofty tower hate me for was fuckin’ fourteen years ago!”

Robert puffs his chest out, he’s dealt with a lot of Rowan’s shit before and he isn’t intimidated by his height. And as the two were being heated their Texas accents flared like nothing before. 

“Fourteen years ago?! That’s when you started that shit, you actually stopped eight years ago! Which accounts for a lot of shit on your record. Which by the fuckin’ way you have the biggest one in the whole system. I’ve looked over a lot of shit, and that’s because I know you’re better than all this shit. You need to grow the fuck up, Rowan. This is your chance for a new start, don’t ruin it. You’re my best friend, I don’t want to see you ruin yourself, again.”

Rowan was about to throw some more back into Robert’s face before being interrupted himself in the middle of the first word. And that interruption was by a man of height in between Robert and Rowan, but whose presence was bigger than the building he stepped in. This man is the current Prime Magister, Adebayo Opeyemi. Who spoke with a gentle calm.

“I know there are many issues between you two that need to be hashed out, but if I may just pause this conversation. There will more than enough time for you two to work out what you need. But I do not have that same luxury.”

Robert apologizes, knowing that he got way too caught up and forgot to actually tell Rowan who exactly was coming in, and to bring him in.

Adebayo then stood up to Rowan, the two hadn’t met before, but it was like the two of them knew exactly what the other could do if things went for the worse. Rowan is about to make some snide joke, before being beat to speaking by the Prime Magister.

“You are exactly who I need for this job. You are perfect. Strong, both physically, emotionally and magically. Especially magically. Tall, but not too tall, perfect for leaders. And the most important part, you are one of the most magically adept party’s who is not affiliated with the government I run...Who also does not wish us many kinds of harm.”

Adebayo makes himself at home, sitting at Rowan’s most comfortable chair, at least the one that wasn’t behind his desk. A grin wide on his features. 

“Wait--The fact I’m not a government stooge like Bobbie here is actually something in my favour? I would’a thought someone of your--Position would want the most loyal, most kiss-ass, brown-nose guardian as...Whatever you’re hiring me for.”

Adebayo then starts to laugh, it’s a deep, pounding laugh. The kind that can rattle your teeth if he were to find something especially hilarious. Then leaning forward, his index finger and thumb rubbing an ancient looking ring on the opposite hand.

“I do understand your confusion. But what I need is someone who can work outside the law, outside the government. But also someone I can trust do so for the right reasons. I need someone who is not looking to only please me to further themselves, someone who will do what’s right even if what’s right isn’t lawful. Which your friend has told me, isn’t his favourite thing. I, Adebayo Opeyemi, am hiring you, Rowan Smith to be the leader of the newly reforged Vigilant!”

As he said Vigilant, his hand raised triumphantly, in joy. It was a name that all three men in the room knew. But Adebayo was the only one who knew them to a near encyclopedic extent, he was almost obsessed with them.  

The VIGILANT, a group of unknowns, magical people and beings that had a connection to Earth. And what that mean can differ so much. As long as you care for the Earth, and don’t wish it or it’s Earthbound people harm, you can be a Vigilant. Their goal was to bridge the gap between Eden and Earth, to ensure the protection of both worlds, and to treat all the same no matter if they had magic or not. Another goal was born soon after the groups first formation, and that was to help put out magical threats on Earth’s side, not only to protect the people but protect the bond of Earth and Eden before it can even be born.

Rowan was stunned at this, so was Robert. Who knew everything up to the doing what’s right even if it’s not lawful thing. While there haven’t been Vigilant’s for hundreds of years, their story has been passed down, but it is not a positive one. The story speaks of the time when the Vigilant nearly ended both worlds, in what way is unclear, the story changes depending on who is telling it. But it was that event that made the Vigilant a failure, and those that survived were tossed away.

“I can tell from your ecstatic expressions that you both are for it! Robert will be your contact to our side of things. But the Vigilant cannot go without aid from Earth! It would be going against what they stand for! So, I have enlisted the aid of the one man, and the one organization that will help us, and not expose us before we are ready.” Adebayo then gestures towards the door. Out steps a man who is more than familiar with this kind of thing. And so is the organization he represents. 

“Gotta tell ya. Wasn’t fun having to tail someone who can use magic. Never is.” This, was the SDLA’s top Agent, Jack Kwon. Who goes up to the still surprised Rowan, and extends his right hand. “Pleasure to meet ya, Rowan Smith. Name’s Jack. Jack Kwon”

Rowan then returns the handshake after shaking himself out of being stunned, noting how it felt weird. Both physically and what he can tell from his magic. So of course, he had to say the first thing that came to mind. “So, does this thing come with the position, or can I just take it as a souvenir?”

Jack grins, having heard stuff like that more than once before. “Hey, and if you do, I’ll throw in not one, but two broken kneecaps, all for free! What a deal, right?” 

Rowan then bursts out one powerful laugh. Gesturing to Jack so the others(Who didn’t look away or anything) could see. “Oh, I like you. Why can’t you hire more guys like this, Mr. Magister?” 

Speaking of, the Prime Magister steps towards the two, putting his hands on both of their shoulders, a bit more awkward for Rowan’s, but he still does so. 

“My, and now your friend. Mr. Kwon is part of the Super Detection and Listing Agency. Which from what he’s told me is more of a front name, than the only thing they do. He is more than happy to have his Agency be your contact on this side. Giving you information, supplies and all you need to do your new job.”

Rowan then interjects with something that’s been on his mind ever since he heard he was being hired for something. 

“How much does this new job pay? Cause I’m still on the fence.”

“Just what I was hoping you’d ask! Your pay will be roughly about--” Adebayo then leans up towards Rowan’s ear and whispers. To which Rowan says.

“I’m in.”

“Hey! What’d he say!”

Adebayo then clears his throat and continues on.

“But, the Vigilant wasn’t just one man, no matter how powerful he may be. They were a team, and quite the expansive one. Your job will be hard and will need many different skillsets and abilities. So I suggest ten members, including you. Mr. Kwon will show you areas where there have been sightings that can be connected to magical beings. I want you to pick where you’re going. Hopefully whoever you encounter there will be exactly who you need.”

He nods at Jack, who steps back and from his right palm a holographic image of Earth is shown, with many, many points of interest. “Just tap one, and it’ll give you the info you need, tap it again and you’ll pick it.”

Rowan takes his time doing this. But thankfully Robert knows the place just well enough that he’s brewed some coffee. 

After all’s said and done Rowan has chosen his nine initial places of interest. Halifax, Nova Scotia. Madison, Wisconsin. Monclova, Coahuila. Kyoto, Japan. Perth, Australia. London, England. Lillehammer, Norway. Manama, Bahrain. And Salamanca, Spain.

“Those are--Interesting choices. You sure you don’t want the guy who says he’s Thor in Sweden?” Jack commented.

“I mean, if he was Thor, he’d be in Norway. Plus the fact that it says that he’s prone to just dropping his pants whenever someone says he isn’t Thor. And I don’t want that curse on my team.” Jack nods at that, with a stifled laugh.

“Your team! Perfect, already in so short a time you have accepted your position and your title! Now, the time is running out. You may verbally accept it, but you must internally accept your responsibility now. Contact Mr. Kwon in the next day or so, Rowan. He will get you where you need to be. But only when you are truly ready. Our time is running out. And yours is just beginning, Rowan!” Adebayo then pulls Robert and Jack with him, as he goes towards the door, Jack’s contact info and a commune-stone tied directly to Robert’s own are ported onto his desk. Rowan’s just filled with a lot of info he has to take in all at once, but he has to say one last thing.

“Rob! Say hey to the kids for me! Tell ‘em their uncle ain’t a deadbeat anymore!” Hopefully he can make himself believe that too. “And also tell the missus to stop cussing at me in Orcish, I know what she’s saying!”

But before he can go back to his chair to think it all over again, something happens. A figure of pure shadow appears in front of him. It’s someone he knows. 

Adebayo with one last bit of talk, showing his other side. His specialty was illusion magic, and his was so great he was able to make a demigod whimper in fear. the illusion’s eyes were burrowing right into Rowan’s heart and soul.

“Your task is the most important thing you’ve ever done. That I have ever done. What you do will reflect upon me when all is said and done. Do not disappoint me Rowan. You will earn your redemption, or face what you have done over and over, for the rest of your life. And I will be there, even if I expire. I will be there. But I know you are better than your past and I trust you. Do not make me a fool for knowing as such, Rowan.”

When the shadowy illusion dissipated, Rowan felt his heart start again. Making his way to his desk, slumping down on the chair while catching his breath. 

--Wait, did Rob still not give his license back? Guess he’s not exactly a detective anymore anyway.

Better get to renovating the place. But first.

He cracks open a bottle of whiskey and turns on his radio, he doesn’t know if it’s to celebrate or if it’s in acceptance of despair.

Maybe he can really make a difference. Wouldn’t hurt to try.

I CHATED DEATH...AND WON.

It was just another Friday afternoon on my way to work at the women’s clothing store. The weather was damp, humid, and drizzly; post-rain with grey skies. I drove my way up to Caleb’s Path and switched to the right lane with the vehicle in front of me now on my left as I wait for the stoplight to go green.

When it turned green, I went forward turning left, assuming I’d complete the turn, go forward on Motor Parkway, wait for another light, check the day’s oil prices, and jump on the expressway to Huntington with no problem. I assumed wrong.  As I made that left-hand turn on my right lane, I met the pick-up truck that introduced itself to my driver’s side without warning. We hit it off right away.

We collided and the feeling was so unreal. I never even thought to be in the position that I was at that day. The impact was so great that my body rocked and swayed inside the vehicle like a Texas rodeo with the seatbelt holding me back. My head and face connected with the airbag with a hit feeling like never before. God bless the airbag.

After it was over, I was left with this amazing feeling that I was in this unimaginable situation, that I was still alive, amazed that this had happened to me. In a matter of just five seconds after impact, I got right out of the passenger’s side of the car and surveyed the damage. Needless to say, the truck driver was more shaken up than I was. He couldn’t contain himself.

His truck, mostly intact, pushed my car onto the middle of the street. That was how powerful it was. Within minutes the police arrive to check up on me. By that time I was smiling like it was nothing because already the incident fucked itself and failed and I knew everything would be all right. I sat on the back of his truck thinking about how lucky I really was like never before. I was also thinking about Yenny, the one person in my life who really cared for me since day one and how sad and distraught she would be if I came out crippled or brain-dead; the dramatic result from the lively, dynamic, animated me to a flat-lining, lifeless spectacle.

The fire department came and lo and behold the first person from that department who helped me was this guy Nicky who was my former schoolyard bully from my Brentwood years. He didn’t believe to see me in a situation like this but it was good times until the department laid me out on the stretcher and into the ambulance for safety sake. I was then introduced to Patrick, another person from Brentwood whom I have not seen in years who is now part of the department. The good times keep on rolling.

Back at work, all the female supervisors had no idea that I won’t be showing up to work. They had no idea that I was in a car accident…yet. They decided I was late for work and went on with their office roundtable conversations about yesterday’s Oprah and celebrity gossip. The clock is ticking.

I arrive at the emergency room, laid out on the bed being checked out by medical and holding my already-broken nose from bleeding. My face feels burndt, bruised, and swollen from the impact from the airbag. I also receive a good headache from the impact. My face would be puffy and zenfully painful for days. From there my family is with me and we all put together the pieces of the puzzle of what else happened at the scene of the accident. My brother White Boy got the call of what happened and death-raced toward the scene.

Then the headache gets heavier and heavier. I lie for a good hour wishing for a dream state because my mind just wants to drift from all the numbness I was dealing with. After being written up and released from the hospital, I’m on my way home. Through the emergency room people stop, look, and stare at me like the Second Coming of Christ, only they never seen a person in such horrible shape.

I retire at home to take a shower, call work to verify that I definitely won’t make it to work, and tell Yenny that everything is AOK. She stopped by later that night to drop off a care-package as she always does. Iced tea, Dr. Pepper, fruit cups, string cheese, that day’s news, and a teddy bear. She was talking to me about her road test for her license, then I show her my car, now totaled from earlier before which had made its way back home resting on my driveway.

I took pictures of the final result which is twisted metal. The driver’s side door is totally blown in and crushed. A massive dent no mechanic could ever fix, totally hopeless. The windshield drew itself as a cracked spider web that kept itself together. No back windshield, that’s gone. The back left tire also was torn apart.

In a few days, I find out a lot of things concerning my accident. My family and I find out that the driver of the truck did indeed blow the red light and was fearful enough to admit it on record. My brother showed me a tiny piece of the truck’s front bumper that broke off upon impact, flying through the side window. It missed my cranium by an inch or two and ended up in the back seat of my car.

Had I taken off from the light a split-second later or went just a little slower, that piece of fender would have impaled me and I possibly would not have ever woken up from the accident. Or, how my brother also explained to me that the entire back windshield flew off from my car and was recovered from the front lawn of an industrial building twenty feet from the accident site, all in one piece. After filling several forms out, sitting through some meetings with an insurance agent, and driving a rental 2005 Chevy Malibu to remember this time of my life by, in due time the accident is all past me as if it never happened.

I look back and think about what if, just what if? What if I left work a little earlier and not catch that helping of an accident? What if I was struck in the head with that stray piece of fender? How worse would that accident be if that airbag somehow did not go off? How would I live with myself and deal with the new cards I’ve been dealt with? How would I be handicapped and debilitated, and what would others think of me? It no longer matters anymore because I am still the same, if not, even more resilient than ever before. I don’t even think about it because it’s now inconsequential.

Just like the next five or ten minutes after the accident, I scoffed it off because I know the Devil did not win. I knew I was going to be all right. Remember when you were 12, 13, 15, 17, and whatever trouble you got into you got out of because you felt invincible? That’s how I felt. I was saved. I counted my lucky stars that a seat belt and an airbag saved my life. They helped me cheat death, that talent only some people could ever have. Even though they are not 100% effective as some people attest, every measure of safety is better than none.

After the accident, my life and luck has changed for the better. For some reason I have been feeling euphoric, intense, and supercharged. Maybe it’s the events, people, smiles, and surprises around me. The car crash had been a big wake-up call that I needed to make the best out of this situation called life. Only a person like me would laugh at an event like this, and I’m going to ride this out for all it’s worth.

The end result of the accident is just as pleasing as a life revelation: you can’t prepare for these things, they just happen out of nowhere and you end up dealing with it. The outcome is always ugly to experience and to look at it from a retrospect.
