(I want to try and do these posts more frequently because I DEARLY miss yelling about books, txitter is [poop emoji]-ing, and bluesky is promising but I don't have much of an audience there yet)
ok! stuff freya has read recently and enjoyed:
A FIRE BORN OF EXILE by aliette de bodard -- did you enjoy nirvana in fire? this is for YOU. it's a revenge story set in aliette's xuya space opera universe, with a pile of complicated characters with mixed or obscured motives, a sapphic romance, and just really incredible use of worldbuilding and politics.
THE SLEEPING SOLDIER by aster glenn gray -- I am an enormous sucker for aster's historical m/m romances, and this one was incredible. a union soldier goes to sleep in 1865 and wakes up in 1965, and his new college roommate has a series of gay crises about it. sweet, exuberant, well researched. both a wonderful romance and an absolutely fascinating examination of male friendships and homosexuality in two different historical time periods.
A DEADLY EDUCATION by naomi novik -- doing a reread of the first two scholomance books before I dive into the third. these books are so disgustingly tailored to ME, a huge fan of magical academia stories with a truly deliciously unnecessary level of worldbuilding detail about how the magic works (and how the school is trying to kill you).
BATH HAUS by p.j. vernon -- a man goes to a gay bathhouse, cheating on his partner, and narrowly escapes being murdered. things get worse from there. I can only recommend this to you if you enjoy thrillers that STRESS YOU THE FUCK OUT, which I normally don't; I nearly put it down a couple of times, but I HAD to know what was going on. it's a masterclass in propulsive tension and does some really cool things with unreliable narration.
HAVEMERCY by jaida jones and danielle bennett -- seven hundred years late to this party, but OH MY GOD. this is the completely gay political/military fantasy of my dreams (the YEARNING), plus there are magical-mechanical dragons. I will be devouring the other books in this series in short order.
EVERY VERSION OF YOU by grace chan -- a beautiful and fascinating literary scifi book about humanity and family and love, and being given the choice to upload your consciousness to a digital paradise as the planet dies around you. unsurprisingly it deals with some heavy stuff, but it's fantastic. and australian!
A THIEF AND A GENTLEMAN by arden powell -- another m/m romance in arden's flos magicae series. the title alone is probably enough to tell you why I enjoyed it, but I especially liked the way it kept subverting my expectations in favour of more chewy emotional honesty and complexity.
STRONG FEMALE CHARACTER by fern brady -- a memoir by a scottish comedian about being diagnosed with autism in her thirties, and her life up to that point. funny and chaotic and an all-around amazing read. I loved fern on taskmaster and I love her even more now.

sirens blare christmas music plays screams sound it's that time of the month.... november book wrap up, what books are you gonna read to round out the year <3
it's funny bc I've been thinking about going to a different cafe since my go-to has (already!!) been blasting xmas music all day long + it's like being sonically waterboarded...laura palmer screaming in the car gif... ANYWAY
november reads:
Global Divas: Filipino Gay Men in the Diaspora by Martin F. Manalansan IV
deeply sensitive, gripping, and articulate ethnography of the nuances + intersections of gay/filipino/immigrant identities that still reads so fresh and relevant - such a gem!!
I Love Dick by Chris Kraus
this felt like stewing in someone else’s stale bathwater for too long
Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer
I listened to this one (primarily during work lunches) so it was like absorbing sweet sermons about slow-living and intentional/reciprocal relationships with nature while stuffing my face with deli sandwiches <3
Bath Haus by P.J. Vernon
all men do is lie: the book
A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway

this part right here officers
I’m finishing up Cruising the Movies: A Sexual Guide to “Oldies” on TV by Boyd McDonald which is a very fun & raunchy time and also working my way thru The Dylan Dog Case Files, though I kinda wanna savor it for as long as possible since it’s the only english collection of Dylan Dog comics in print at the moment (to my knowledge). I’m taking a lil trip this weekend that includes a long train ride, so I’m gonna bring My Life in France by Julia Child to keep in the same vein of Hemingway’s reflections + when I come back I think I’ll pick up Watchmen 🕵️ maybe try to close out the year with a play or something dramatic and succinct, though I’m chill if I don’t get around to much more since I’ve already surpassed my reading goal for the year + am satisfied (last year’s scramble to merely reach my goal kicked my ass into gear!!) 🧘

14,17?
14. What books do you want to finish before the year is over?
I am currently reading Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik, so I'd like to finish that before the year is out. It's a retelling of Rumpelstiltskin where this young woman Miryem takes over her father's moneylending business. She brags about how she can turn silver into gold and these ice people called the Staryk overhear her, so they leave her a bag of silver to turn into gold, the implication being that they'll kill her if she can't do it.
17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?
Bath Haus by P.J. Vernon was one of my favorite books that I read this year. I wasn't expecting it to be bad, I wasn't really expecting anything. I grabbed it sort of randomly in a bookstore because I thought it sounded interesting. But OMG this book kept me up into the wee hours of the morning because I couldn't put it down.

Book Review: Bath Haus
Book Review: Bath Haus
Hello Bookworms! Long time no see! I’ve been on vacation the past week, and with grad school on top of that everything just fell by the wayside. That being said, I’m glad to be back in the swing of things. Today I’m sharing my review of Bath Haus by P.J. Vernon. My book buddy Gigi recommended this read, and we tend to like books about the same, so I thought I’d give this a go. Alright, on to…

I don't normally post recs for published fiction here, but I just finished Bath Haus by P.J. Vernon in only two days, which considering my schedule is absolutely insane. But holy crap, I haven't read a book this good in so long.
If you enjoy well-written, adult queer thrillers/horror with brilliantly flawed characters and a plot that keeps on giving, don't mind biting your nails because of The Suspense, and love reading about relationships that are neither safe nor sane, this is the book for you. Go forth and read it. You won't regret it.

Get to Know Nyx!
Rules: tag 9 people you want to get to know better!
Tagged by @adventuresofmeghatron - thank ya, bud! 💚
Three Ships (going to do ones other than those with my OCs):
Charon/Gob [Fallout 3] -- My guilty pleasure (and seemingly rare) pair. I can't even tell you how I started... but now we're here.
Kakashi/Iruka [Naruto] -- Love these lads, and have for a loooong while.
Leon/Chris [Resident Evil] -- I didn't know I needed it in my life until I found it.
First Ever Ship: So, when I said I've loved Kakashi/Iruka for a long while... I meant it. Of course, when I first got into the series, it wasn't more than just 'aww, they're cute!' any time they were on-screen together. It evolved as I did, of course... 😂
Last Song: Absolute Zero -- Stone Sour.
Last Film: UH. I've mostly been watching docuseries. The latest one was Evil Genius on Netflix.
Currently Reading: Aside from fanfic, Bath Haus by P.J. Vernon. I promise it isn't what the title makes it sound like; it's an engrossing thriller novel.
Currently Watching: Hoarders, because for some reason, I can't not watch it.
Currently Consuming: Raspberry White Claw. 😎
Currently Craving: Waffle fries... and hazelnut coffee/chocolate.
It's late, so consider yourself tagged if you wanna fill this out!

Trouble is My Business (2018)
This homage to the film noir genre is quite a fun ride as it involves two interconnecting cases for a detective on the verge of redemption.
Roland Drake is a detective in 1940s Los Angeles who is on the brink of losing it all due to the failure of his last case, which resulted in the death of a missing woman named Nadia. His former partner has left him and he’s on the verge of being evicted. One fateful night, a mysterious woman name Catherine Montemar comes to his office. She wants to hire him to help find her missing father. Drake takes the case but also finds himself charmed by Catherine’s beauty and ends up in bed with her.
The next morning, Roland wakes up and find blood next to him. A few hours later, Catherine’s sister Jennifer arrives and demands to know where her sister is. When Drake discovers photos of his tryst with Catherine, he tells her why she was at his office. Jennifer reveals that their father was in possession of the Orloff Diamond, a very valuable diamond that is believed to be priceless. Reluctantly, Drake offers to help Jennifer find Catherine, her father, and the diamond as his method to get redemption. However, at what price will his meaning for redemption cost?
It has been a long time since we were treated to any sore of fun tribute to one of the great dark genres: the film noir. While L.A. Confidential was a great homage to the genre, with its feel and essence, there hasn’t been much since then. Enter Tom Konkle, who not only directed the film, but stars as our lead detective Drake and co-wrote the script with actress Brittney Powell, who also served as a producer on the film.
Konkle is quite fun to watch as Drake as he really brings the spirit of this brand of central character in the genre. He has that emotional range of the character that come out, thus making him a worthy character actor to play the part. He is clearly on the verge of redemption after the failure of his last case. We also learn of his narrative voiceover as he speaks towards his former partner Lew, played by producer David Beeler, who does a great job of showcasing this sort of love-hate relationship between Lew and Drake.
What’s a film noir without a femme fatale? Enter Brittney Powell, a former staple of underrated 90s films such as Airborne and To Be the Best. She brings out a performance that the likes of Lauren Bacall and Rita Hayworth would be proud of, as she plays dual roles. First, she is seen as Catherine, the mysterious sister with dark hair who Drake describes as “a woman whose face will launch a thousand ships and a body that would bring them back”. Then, she is Jennifer, Catherine’s concerned sister who eventually falls for our hero throughout the course of the case.
Vernon Wells enters the fray as Detective Tate, a dirty LAPD officer with ties not only to this case but Drake’s previous case as a twist, or MacGuffin comes in the form of a black book that reveals the corruption within the police, which is why Drake was hired in the first place. As with the genres, there are many twists, some of them shocking, that work quite well within the story and leaves one guessing until the very end, which even brings in a bit of a shock value.
Trouble is My Business is a very riveting homage to the film noir genre with its great black and white filter, excellent performances from Tom Konkle and Brittney Powell, and the twists and turns that make film noir one of the best dark genres out there.
WFG RATING: A
Random Media presents a Lumen Actus production. Director: Tom Konkle. Producers: Brittney Powell and David Beeler. Writers: Tom Konkle and Brittney Powell. Cinematography: Jesse Arnold and P.J. Gaynard. Editing: Tom Konkle.
Cast: Vernon Wells, Brittney Powell, Tom Konkle, David Beeler, Jordana Capra, Matt Teich, Ksenia Devaleri, Ben Pace, Steve Tom.
