I SURE WOULD ALSO LIKE TO KNOW, LAVA LAMP.
OH GOSH WOULD I LIKE TO KNOW.
Tumblr media
ADORABLE.
Also interesting to know that Lava Lamp can just sense people nearby. Even at age 6 or 7.
He would be unbearable in Hide and Seek.

Elliott's big adventure in Japan, day 2 - short(ish) version because I am drunk and tired 🍶✨️
👺Went to the kabuki theatre!!!!!! We saw two plays, a humorous one and a traditional epic dance one, with a super nice guide (thank you Kazui-san! and thanks again for the recommendation Shin!) The theater was so pretty! We even bought a bento box to eat during intermission! (if you've followed me for a while, you know how much I like kabuki, and I was really looking forward to this!)
Tumblr media
🍵Drank proper matcha with a wagashi pastry!! In a very beautiful posh teahouse next to a rooftop Japanese garden. It was raining, it was so so pretty. The tea was slightly bitter and very tasty.
Tumblr media
👘Went to the theatre wearing yukatas; a nice staff lady at the theatre fixed our obi belt knots and she was impressed when we said we made the knots ourselves XD
Tumblr media
⛩️Went to a very nice shintô shrine and received my first omamori charm! (for shrine and temple items, it is polite to say "receive" rather than "purchase"or "buy")
Tumblr media
🎏Also first gachapon!! It's the kabuki theatre's little cat mascot, that has the colors of the traditional kabuki curtain (red black and green)
Tumblr media
🗼Tokyo Tower!! You know, the Japanese knockoff Eiffel tower. I ate some tokayaki at a nearby food stall and burned my tongue like every time I eat takoyaki.
🏯Another Buddhist temple, we entered from the back so I thought it was small but NOOOOOO it was fucking GIGANTIC and had ROWS upon ROWS of Jiso statues (Buddhist deity dedicated to protecting young children, they are super cute and have little red aprons and winter hats and wind mills)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
👹Went to another Buddhist temple for Bon Odori! It is a celebration for the dead. Lots and lots of people were wearing yukatas and dancing in a circle around a stage with fun music, and tons of tiny food stalls (I bought a whole-ass fish on a skewer), and I ordered food by myself !!! (and I was so happy I completed the transaction in pseudo-Japanese that I fucking forgot to take the food. Watashi wa baka desu). And I complimented a lady on her cute kimono and hairdye all by myself! ("Excuse me... Kimono pretty! Sorry I don't speak Japanese. -points at hair- pretty! Thank you very much! Goodbye!" -runs away-)
🤗We sat at a table and Aime struck up a conversation with some locals and they even bought us a drink, and Aime was so so nice and translated things to French so I could follow the conversation and chime in too. Japanese people are super nice when they find tourists that speak Japanese ❤️
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aime-chan daisuki!!! Nihon daisuki!!!! ❤️ 🤗

Heroes & Monsters
I kept seeing something moving quickly out of the corner of my eye. But it had always disappeared whenever I looked up & out the window by my lightbox.. After a few of these annoying distractions, I stopped working, and stared intently out the window. Until.. I saw weird SCI-FI NINJAS acrobatically battling a SPACE MONSTER on the rooftop across the road. Wha?!
Tumblr media
I had no idea what I was looking at! Colleagues explained that this was a shoot for a popular Japanese action/sci-fi TV show called SUPER SENTAI. I was in Tokyo, working at TOEI Animation studios. Their live-action studio was nearby, and they were simply shooting stunts on the rooftops of the mall across the street. (This same show would soon take the world by storm, renamed as - POWER RANGERS!)
Mystery thus solved, I turned my attention back to my work. Which was also about spandex-clad heroism - a 50th birthday animated series of SUPERMAN. With character designs by the great Gil Kane (I later discovered that another fave comics artist worked on the show too - Jim Woodring).
I’d looked for animation work when arriving in Japan, with no luck. Despite having a working holiday visa, and several polite interviews at studios. Anime gurus were unimpressed by my career working on terrible Saturday morning cartoons..
So I did the inevitable. English teaching. That, and a few illustration gigs, financed my own studies at a Japanese language school (recommended by pal Martin Ramsay). I enjoyed learning Japanese in the mornings, with afternoons free to explore Tokyo, before teaching English classes in the evenings.
Then, Sean Newton told me of a short animation job at TOEI in northwest Tokyo. My background in American Saturday Morning animation was suddenly an advantage, because TOEI’s client was Ruby-Spears in LA. I continued teaching the evening classes (till the semester ended) but had to stop my own Japanese lessons, sadly. However, I jumped at the chance to work in a Japanese animation studio.
I'd done Layout supervision in Taiwan, and oversaw inbetweening and reshoots in Korea. For the TOEI job, I was to help the Ruby-Spears on-site animation supervisor with fixes & reshoots. This gig even came with an apartment, in a building owned by TOEI mere blocks from their studio.
TOEI animation studio was created in 1956 (with roots in an earlier studio, Nihon Douga Eiga founded in 1948). Many anime masters got their start at this great studio - Osamu Tezuka began at TOEI, as did Hayao Miyazaki & Isao Takahata. The list of famous anime titles produced there is long indeed.
Since arriving in Japan, I often went to anime movies, trying my hardest to follow the language. Which was usually a fool's errand, as my Japanese vocabulary wasn't extensive, but I could follow the fantastic visuals. It was a great year for animation. I'd seen "TOTORO" in April. "GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES" had come out in May. Even western animation was fun, with "ROGER RABBIT" in June. I was utterly floored by "AKIRA" in July.
Anyway, there so many great projects in production around that time, that it was hard to get experienced animators interested in SUPERMAN. I am not sure what precisely was attracting talent when we needed it. Possibly TOEI's own DRAGONBALL-Z? or Kawajiri’s DEMON CITY SHINJUKU (which dropped later that year).
Trying to pump up enthusiasm for SUPERMAN, my boss had episodes of the 1940s Fleischer/Famous Studios cartoons sent from LA. He assembled animators in a screening room, and spoke excitedly about the history of the SUPERMAN character, and the classic cartoons - “This is what we are going for!” The lights dimmed and he rolled tape. The very first thing on screen was the title..
THE JAPOTEURS. I flinched. Uh, oh..
What followed was several minutes of absolutely the most racist stereotyping of the Japanese. Yikes. I'd seen some of these classic SUPERMAN cartoons before, but not this one. It was perhaps the first time that I saw a feel-good pop-culture icon used as a propaganda tool.
All the other shorts on that tape were about catching bank robbers, or fighting robots built by a criminal mastermind. Beautifully designed & animated action-escapism. Just what the supervisor had intended to show. If he'd previewed the video, he could have shown an inspiring action-animation banquet. Minus the insulting racism appetiser.
The lights went up, and he awkwardly apologised that these these cartoons were made during World War 2, when Japanese were the baddies. This mea culpa was made more awkward & prolonged as it had to be translated, sentence by embarrassing sentence.. If the intention was to get the Japanese crew excited for the poster boy of Truth Justice & The American Way.. well, that screening had the exact opposite effect, sadly..
Our main liaison with the crew was an absolutely lovely man, named Mr Otani. I imagine that he did serious damage control after that.. Otani San had worked at TOEI for many years, and knew everyone (he even had tales of working with Miyazaki). Anyway, I think it's largely due to this well-loved man that a crew finally assembled to finish the show.
Tumblr media
By the standards of 1980s Saturday morning cartoons, the show came out pretty well, but is perhaps the least well-known of all the animated series of SUPERMAN. I wasn’t on the project long enough to get a screen credit. Which didn't bother me. It was years before I realised that screen credits on cartoons even mattered. That changed years later, when I applied for a US work visa..
ha ha!

Oh man this tweet is not foreboding at all...
In Japanese mythology, Takamagahara (高天原, "Plain of High Heaven" or "High Plain of Heaven", also read as Takaamanohara, Takamanohara, Takaamagahara, or Takaamahara), is the abode of the heavenly gods (amatsukami). Often depicted as located up in the sky, it is believed to be connected to the Earth by the bridge Ame-no-ukihashi (the "Floating Bridge of Heaven").
And the rocky door of heaven means:
Susanoo, declaring that he had won the trial as he had produced deities of the required gender,[b] then "raged with victory" and proceeded to wreak havoc by destroying his sister's rice fields and defecating in her palace. While Amaterasu tolerated Susanoo's behavior at first, his "misdeeds did not cease, but became even more flagrant" until one day, he bore a hole in the rooftop of Amaterasu's weaving hall and hurled the "heavenly piebald horse" (天斑駒, ame no fuchikoma), which he had flayed alive, into it. One of Amaterasu's weaving maidens was alarmed and struck her genitals against a weaving shuttle, killing her. In response, a furious Amaterasu shut herself inside the Ame-no-Iwayato (天岩屋戸, "Heavenly Rock-Cave Door", also known as Ama-no-Iwato), plunging heaven and earth into total darkness.
Genos please. xd
Amaterasu declares that the male deities were hers because they were born of her necklace, and that the three goddesses were Susanoo's.[19] Susanoo, announcing that he had won the trial,[a] thus signifying the purity of his intentions, "raged with victory" and proceeded to wreak havoc by destroying his sister's rice fields, defecating in her palace and flaying the 'heavenly piebald horse' (天斑駒, ame-no-fuchikoma), which he then hurled at Amaterasu's loom, killing one of her weaving maidens. A furious Amaterasu in response hid inside the Ama-no-Iwato ("Heavenly Rock Cave"), plunging heaven and earth into total darkness. The gods, led by Omoikane-no-Kami (思金神), eventually persuade her to come out of the cave, restoring light to the world. As punishment for his misdeeds, Susanoo is thrown out of Takamagahara:
Rip Genos.
The main narrative of the Nihon Shoki has Izanagi and Izanami procreating after creating the Japanese archipelago; to them were born (in the following order) Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, the 'leech-child' Hiruko, and Susanoo. Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi were sent up to heaven to govern it, while Hiruko – who even at the age of three could not stand upright – was placed on the 'Rock-Camphor Boat of Heaven' (天磐櫲樟船, Ame-no-Iwakusufune) and set adrift. Susanoo, whose wailing laid waste to the land, was expelled and sent to the netherworld (Ne-no-Kuni).[12] (In the Kojiki, Hiruko is the couple's very first offspring, born before the islands of Japan and the other deities were created; there he is set afloat on a boat of reeds.)
Omoikane (思兼 or 思金) is a Shinto god of wisdom and intelligence. His name means "serving one's thoughts." A heavenly deity who is called upon to "ponder" and give good counsel in the deliberations of the heavenly deities. In the myth where Amaterasu hid in a cave, he was tasked to find a way to get her out.[
Now onto theorycrafting spoilers that is a speciality of mine.
The theory is that two gods got awakened as per the chapter title, God and Saitama. Their consciousnesses.
Jupiter represents the conscious mind, the ego, that has been stripped naked for Saitama and Sun represents the emotion, the unconscious mind, ID, and the explosive set of his destructive divine cosmic powers.
But also the rocky door of heaven, in this case, means the divine power of saitama's emotions will be opened in the second half of OPM. Which he shut by dissociating from his emotions in the latest chapters.
God's unconscious mind will be awakened, the one that is hidden beneath the earth. And so will Saitama's.
But another interpretation is that the door to Saitama's emotions will now be opened and he will be more expressive of his emotions come the second half of OPM. Which I am pleased to hear because our poor protagonist needs to be able to feel again. He might also get more counseling from King concerning his emotional state.
Whirlpool of heaven and rocky door of heaven. Hm.
The swirling chaos of his conscious psyche and the impenetrable sturdyness of his unconscious emotions.
I like it.

Otaru Adventure
I had visited Otaru early in the winter and not known much about the city beforehand so this time I prepared with some research. I had a coffee at Rhythm with Kelly, Damian, and a handful of cyclists then took the first bus to Kutchan, and a train to Otaru while watching a gripping episode of Homeland. In Otaru I walked straight to the bus stop and took a bus up the hill to Otaru Tenguyama cable car. The bus was very confusing and didn't have tickets so I used my Suica card instead but when I got off I realised I could've paid cash so why did the driver tell me to use the Suica? I was greeted by the cable car theme song (in Japan everything has a song/jingle playing repeatedly to drive you insane) as I bought my ticket. The lady at the desk didn't speak English so she held up a laminated card with an assortment of flags and "where are you from?" written at the top. It was for pointing but my flag was missing so I tried to say "Nu Zearando" in my best Nihon accent to which she nodded and ushered me to the cable car. I rode up alone. Well, me and the plastic shields on each seat. It only took a few minutes to reach the top where there were three viewpoints. I decided to sit at number two to eat my lunch of a blueberry pancake. I then took the walking trail where there were two small shrines and a spiritual statue with a long pointed nose. I read the instructions and rubbed three times on each side for success and safety in traffic - and then promptly sanitised my hands. Further along there was an enclosure full of tiny squirrels, and then I used my free ticket to ride on the slider (a small luge). It took 5 minutes to slowly drag me up the hill with the sun beating down on me, reflected in the shiny metal track, and then once released I rode to the bottom in just 30 seconds! I climbed onto the rooftop for the view but it was so hot that I could only stay for a few photos before cooling off in the gift shop. I took the cable car back down with a Japanese family but had to wait a bit until the bus came so I wandered up the road and found a skate park but unfortunately I didn't have a skateboard (not that I could ride it given the current state of my knee). My afternoon was spent checking out some of the sights; the old railroad, the canals, the glass shops. I went for ice cream at a recommended shop but it was closed so I sat in the park across the road to watch a large glass-walled room with an intricate clock inside. It had balls flying down ramps, tubes and loops and crashing into cymbals, xylophones and miscellaneous other household items. I checked in to my hotel room and then, one quick KFC meal later, I was slowly walking down the main street of Otaru. I visited some more glass shops, Japanese souvenir shops, a Venetian glass "museum" (also a shop), Matcha shop, and then I saw a big banner for ¥100 cream puffs - that's how to get me! It turned out to be a confectionary shop and I bought some interesting Japanese sweets to try, as well as my cream puff and the lady even gave me a free mini coffee to go with it! At the end of the shopping street there's an old warehouse that has been converted into a music box shop/museum which was impressive. Tables upon tables covered in music boxes as far as the eye could see. Outside the shop there was the steam clock, a gift from the city of Vancouver, and I was able to see it chime a little tune at 5pm. I visited the Tanaka sake brewery for a tour and some free tastes of their most popular sake. It turns out that I'm not a fan of sake... By this point my feet were killing me but I pushed on to the nearby mall for a look around until I ended up getting stuck inside when they were closing! Eventually I was freed and took the train back to the hotel. The craziest thing happened - I saw this Chinese guy who lives in Niseko as I was leaving the station! He took the bus into Kutchan with me that morning (I often see him on the bus), then I saw him take the train to Otaru. He must've spent the day there and was heading back when our paths crossed again. It's such a small world!

Shanghai Jiuguang Center
UNStudio completes the Shanghai Jiuguang Center – the largest retail complex in north Shanghai
UNStudio, in collaboration with Nihon Sekkei, recently completed the Shanghai Jiuguang Center. The design for this brand new retail destination, which sits in the middle of a bustling Shanghai neighbourhood merges an advanced commercial ecosystem with a human-centric, customer-friendly destination.
Ben van Berkel: “Shopping malls are the public spaces of Chinese cities. These retail complexes are not simply places to shop, they are all-in-one destinations for outings and social gatherings. They are also places where culture and commerce merge and where architecture can express this expansive condition.”
The best of both worlds Collaboration was key for the creation of a symbiotic relationship between the commercial aspirations and the architectural interventions. While Nihon Sekkei were asked to develop the outer shell of the retail center, UNStudio was tasked with fleshing out the mall as a placemaking destination for customers and the larger community. This included the design of the inner courtyard and its facades, the full interior of the mall and a public rooftop terrace.
User experience forms the core of UNStudio’s design. Looking at the numerous ways users could engage with the various spaces and creating curated shopping experiences for different users informed the design of the building. This resulted in creating a synergy between the architectural and interior design, the building scale and the human scale, the geometry and materials and the inside-outside relationship.
Public courtyard as a destination The design includes a central courtyard and landscape area that sits at the heart of the mall. This courtyard not only serves as an event space for the mall itself, but also provides a destination for the wider community.
An integral element of the central courtyard is the sunken area with integrated seating, planting and lighting that is also designed to be used for events. As such the courtyard becomes a destination both during the day and in the evenings
The courtyard landscape links the basement levels and the upper levels by way of a generous staircase and escalators. In addition to providing direct access on ground floor, the articulation and horizontal window bands in the facades surrounding the courtyard create a strong visual connection between the external space and the interior public areas on all the levels.
The face of the mall The courtyard facade was conceived as a pearl set within its shell, referring to the tessellated enclosure of the exterior facade, which opens up to a fluid experience and a mother-of-pearl effect as you enter the central courtyard.
The various balconies that are connected to the void spaces blur the relationship between interior and exterior, while the pearlescent material finish of the ceramic tiles emphasises the daylight falling on different areas of the facade and creating dynamic reflections throughout the day.
The surrounding façade also expresses the interior design and identity, with the balcony detail also featuring colour that is matched with the colours predominantly used to accentuate three interior voids.
Curated shopping experience The strong relationship between the exterior and interior continues in the organisation of three internal voids which are located on the perimeter of the courtyard. Long bands of windows along the courtyard enable glimpses to the interior spaces, while light enters the void spaces through the facade, creating vertical spaces flooded with daylight.
Each void has its own distinct identity and materialisation, based on three different themes that vertically link the shopping experience and help to orientate users within the expansive retail areas.
The ‘urban playground’ themed void, with its bright a colorful material scheme, expresses the bustle of the city outside. For the second void, with the theme ‘urban oasis’, the materialisation sets out to re-connect with nature, using warm colour tones and brass articulations throughout. The third void, which is themed as an ‘urban catwalk’, describes a nighttime atmosphere that is reflected in the dark, glossy materials used.
The three voids anchor the public circulation areas and create a vertical space across the different retail levels. They further supply the circulation spaces with daylight, while providing glimpses to the courtyard outside.
The main vertical circulation is located alongside these voids, while the voids themselves are connected on each floor by a retail boulevard: a continuous route that provides access to all shops. On every floor this internal boulevard is curated into three zones with a series of attraction points.
The ceiling design integrates a pattern that acts as a wayfinding element, pointing to common areas such as restrooms, elevators and the escalators located next to the voids.
The retail boulevard, along with the three themed voids, form an interior public space that creates a constant flow of people, which adds to the overall orientation and curated experience of the building.

OOH. Lava Lamp first meeting Sakura and not being allowed to make contact with her is high key story irony compared to the opening pages of Chapter One, where the (A Sakura) and (A Syaoran) ARE trying to make contact with each other desperately, but are physically kept apart.
And interestingly the "hand hover over her head" is a bit of an echo of the moment that Fai and Lava Lamp shared on the rooftops of Nihon, bringing forward that feeling of WANTING to connect with someone but not quite being able to. The Prevented Touch to signpost a connection that they Want to make but are kept from due to Circumstances.
And it’s THIS feeling that STARTS their relationship.
A defining moment all the way down.
Tumblr media
But on the plus side that’s a very cute thing to bond about in your first conversation!

Ryssa, it's been a bad day. Do you think we could get some sad exhausted Fai and caring husband Kuro? Hope you've had a wonderful day ^-^
This took longer than I told you it was and I’m really sorry! I hope you managed to have a better day
Most of Fai’s life had taken place in the high courts. Even when he was traveling between the worlds they had found themselves in the company of the socially elite just as often as the humble and toiling. The world of royalty and nobility was a place Fai was familiar with, and no matter the dimension one found themselves in, some things never changed. In Nihon, those certain things held just as true - double meanings everywhere, backhanded compliments, more rules than you could wag your finger at if you had all day. It was tiring for anyone, and down right exhausting for Fai, who was still learning the ropes of his new home and life.
Tomoyo was kind enough to stick close, but he couldn’t keep himself glued to the princess’ side forever, not if he wanted to garner any sort of respect from the other nobles (or himself, to be honest) but taking the plunge into this mostly alien culture was daunting and it wore on Fai each day he helped play host to the dignitaries that stopped by to meet with Tomoyo and Kendappa.
He only felt himself relax when he flopped messily onto his and Kurogane’s futon at night after freeing himself from the many layers of his... hakama? kimono? yukata?
Of whatever it was that Tomoyo had graciously sent for him to be dressed in that day. Stars above knew he always forgot what it was called midway through the day anyhow, though he could see it in Tomoyo’s eyes that this was going to be corrected soon, one way or another.
Kurogane always came back to their suite later than Fai, busy prowling the grounds and rooftops like the good and loyal guard dog he was. It never failed that Fai fell asleep before he got back, waking only enough to roll over and snuggle up close once his delightful furnace of a husband slipped under the covers later in the night. It was only for a few weeks until all of the nobles had had their chances to speak with the Empress about their provinces, but a few weeks of only seeing Kurogane here and there was just about the worst thing in Fai’s opinion. Sure, he could dig deep and sense his prey at any time anywhere on the palace grounds, or see him watching silently from shadows, unseen by the common blueblood, but that was practically nothing.
Fai was getting ready to push himself to his feet and finish readying himself for bed when he heard the door to the room slide open. Even after so long living in safety and peace, surrounded by men and women trained and trusted by Kurogane and Souma to protect those who lived in the palace, his first instinct was to defend himself against this foolish would-be intruder, but he was hardly to his knees when he recognized Kurogane, handsome and amused and already closing the thin door behind him.
A little embarrassed, Fai let himself fall onto his rear end and watch Kurogane strip off his armor in the gentle candlelight. “You’re back early tonight,” Fai said, stifling a yawn and giving up on remaining upright.
“Hn,” he answered, and didn’t elaborate until everything had found its place and Kurogane was standing above Fai, looking down at him with a mix of fond exasperation and subtle concern. “Tomoyo’s idea no doubt, Souma all but chased me off, telling me I needed a break. I get the feeling I’m not the one she was talking about.”
Fai waved one limp wristed hand at Kurogane. “Pfft, I’m fine, just tired.”
“I noticed,” Kurogane said, taking a seat beside Fai. “You’ve been fast asleep every night well before I came back, and before dinner was served.”
Fai had had no idea there had been dinners delivered to their room and he felt his cheeks heating a little at the fact that he managed to sleep through the servants no doubt knocking and announcing the arrival of his meals.
Kurogane sighed and rolled his eyes, but there was no real irritation there. “If I didn’t know how much they fed everyone at these things I’d be worried about you starving to death, but you need to start at least staying awake for dinner from now on,” Kurogane said as he prodded at Fai’s ribs. “You’re already skinny enough to lose in a stiff wind.”
They both knew that wasn’t true and that Fai was far sturdier than he might look at first glance, but Kurogane did have a point about skipping meals every day.
“Okay okay, Kuro-worry,” Fai yawned, rolling on to his stomach. “I’ll be sure to eat my dinner like a respectable young man.”
Behind him he heard Kurogane snort, and then there were two large, warm hands on his back and it was mere seconds before Fai was melting into the futon. “More like eat your dinner like the creaking boned old man you are,” he said.
Normally, Fai had a come back of some sort for Kurogane calling him an old man, but with the heavenly way those wingers were working out the tension in his shoulders and neck at the moment Fai was lucky to be able to remember how to breathe, let alone come up with a snappy retort. He simply sighed happily and let Kurogane do with him as he pleased, dozing in the haze of candlelight and attention.
Eventually, Kurogane stopped and Fai couldn’t help but whine pitifully, not even opening his eyes or turn his head to pout at Kurogane to continue. Above him, Kurogane tsked, true to his mother hen-like nature that extended from their children all the way to his husband.
“Tomoyo had been saying you were looking tense, but for the gods’ sakes, mage.” There was a blanket tossed over Fai and in the next few seconds darkness swallowed the room. “Tomorrow I’ll stop by the medical wing and get something to help and I’ll give you a proper back rub.”
For a moment Fai opened his mouth to insist that Kurogane didn’t need to do any of that, to say that he was fine and that going out of his was for Fai was silly, but Kurogane really did know him all too well. He was silenced with a quick tug of his hair and a kiss to the top of his head. Huffing in good natured defeat, Fai burrowed in closer to Kurogane’s warmth and slept the best night’s sleep he had had in quite a while.

BRB
On the rare occasions that I care about my news feed, some things actually get my attention, aside from cute puppy gifs and stupid political fanaticism like wtf. Anyway, a “friend” shared this blog post about UPLB--my dear UPLB--and how uh-mazing that place is. I mean, I get it; it is a mystical, magical university (but not in a Hogwarts way) and, well, who could resist writing about, or instagramming it?
I apologize. I’m just at this point in my college life where I see everything under gray clouds, and I don’t mean the silvery kind. I mean dark, nimbus, let’s-do-relief-operations-after-this-storm, gray clouds. I hate that place, but every Monday when I return to the apartment there I’m always looking forward to walking the streets of Elbi. It’s weird.
Anyway, what I’m about to do is kind of a parallel narration according to the places described by the author/blogger. It’ll be a whiny, age-inappropriate sulking about how bad I feel in that wonderful place, but hey, I don’t know how to properly feel anymore. I need to do this.
(1 Baker Hall) The only fun I had in Baker Hall was Elbikon. Seriously. For one thing, the interior is very old--wooden steps, dramatic windows. Nothing wrong there; someone’s doing a splendid job on preservation (except that the temperature rises over unbearable degrees). Here’s the problem: the string ensemble of UPLB practices there. I hear violins, and I hate that. I hate missing the violin. It’s a piece of me that just doesn’t fit perfectly anymore when I try to get my shit together again. I mean, it fits, but not exact-o.
(2 Carillon Tower) For four years I’d lived in the same dormitory and every time I needed a jeepney ride, I pass by the Carillon Tower. It’s peaceful there; I hang around on my own and no one disturbs me because everyone else is too busy cuddling with his/her SO. It’s too peaceful actually, that all I could think about is that a pool of blood is too obvious at the foot of the tower. Besides, the gates are locked. No potential here.
Backspace. BACKSPACE.
(3 Student Union Building) Sigh. SU. Where do I even begin? Oh, wait, I need to get a number before I begin. Approximately 56 minutes before I get called. LIES! It’s like all you want to do there is rush in, get things done, rush out. But you can’t. Because you’re queued. The bathrooms are okay, I guess. I thought that SU was supposed to symbolize the university embracing the student, making them feel welcomed and that they are free to do whatever hell they want (bleargh). That’s funny, because I feel more welcomed by the river behind it.
(4 Trees) I have this theory that the trees in UPLB are majestically large because they feed upon the souls and hopes and dreams of thousands and thousands of students, on-time and delayed, every semester. This may be only in my head, but I honestly feel like my energy is always drained when I’m there. Maybe that’s why Thursday is drinking day: so students can at least carry on through Friday and the weekends without feeling like shit. Me? I drink Mondays. And Tuesdays. And We--
(5 DL Umali) I don’t think I’ll ever walk the stage of DL Umali with pride and confidence ever again. I used to be a student achiever: college scholar and honor roll, promising GWA. I shake hands with the dean; I get a certificate. Now, I’m just a probationary student with nine failed units and one INC that all happened in one epic semester. Epic fail, that is.
That’s not all. Our org holds our annual exhibit in the gallery at the basement. And I haven’t had any WIPs for a year. I can’t stress enough how I lost my will to draw. Recently, art has only been a way to calm me down. That’s great, right? At least I still have it. God.
(6 Nihon Koen) I think I’ll be seeing this torii regularly starting Tuesday. It’s a fun way to travel down from the UHS, where the psych is in TTh 2-5 pm.
UPLB Tip #562: There are desperate pervs in pretty decent bathrooms. DO NOT give in to the temptation no matter how much of your life you’ve given up, because you can get sick. Or pregnant. Or worst, videoed. Besides, his dick was tiny.
(7 Thai Pavillion) Hang around this exotic gazebo every afternoon before dusk if you want to ogle at fit people stretching, and jogging, and basically all other things you don’t have the energy for, a.k.a taking care of your body. Plus, they have dogs. Dogs are one of the reasons I don’t let go.
(8 Freedom Park) Again, a haven for healthy people: F-park. Fit park. Food park. Fuck park. Whatever you wish: it’s Freedom Park. Here’s a tip: unless you’re a Jesus person, don’t sit on the benches alone. Or at least have the guts to say “no, I don’t wanna hear about the five things that I need to know to be saved.” And besides, sitting alone on a bench in front of a lot of parked cars for a few hours is creepy. There was this one time I thought this old guy in his car was actually watching me. I could take the attention but that just sounds really slutty. Try sitting at the grandstand instead.
(9 Mariang Banga) It doesn’t matter what religion or cult you belong in: Mariang Banga is real. Ask permission before picking a flower, apologize for stepping on grass, always appreciate the weather no matter how insufferable it is, because she has power over this land, you mortal. (I still think she cursed me with a hole for a heart and a jelly for a brain.)
(10 Palma Bridge) There was a time in my early college years when Palma Bridge was called Sperm Bridge but I won’t give any hints. Get it? Hint? Like, odor? No? How about “call of the void”? “High place phenomenon”? Urge to jump? Still no? Good.
(11 Molawin Creek) This river is the same river I was talking about. It actually runs pretty far. In one of my stupid adventures pre destructive semesters, I tried to discover what was behind my then-dormitory. You guessed it: a forest. Hah okay, the river comes after it. There was this spot that I liked--clear and cold water, decently dry rocks, some shade, no one else around. Bathing naked was fun. But on my next adventure, I got lost, so uh-uh I’m not going back. Or will I? (I conclude that these adventures comprise a death wish.)
(12 Park behind humanities) Behind CAS Building is this construction where we get rubble from. And the mound of gravel that was never removed served as another seat for our tambayan, where I always feel so awkward.
(13 NCAS) One question: how the hell can I get on the NCAS rooftop? Ideation aside, a top view of O-park would be nice.
(14 Office of the University Registrar) Soon enough, the registrar will not include me in the list of officially enrolled students because ma’am, I am tired. I need a break. And probably my TOR.
(15 Hum/CAS) Pretend to be a younger batch if you look the part. I always do. It gives the illusion that I’m still full of hopes and dreams, and it’s a good excuse for asking about things that I should know. The three CAS buildings and Physci are the good places to do it. And Copeland gym.
(16 Two roads diverged by O-park) Lots of walks to clear the mind // Beware acquaintances, tell them you’re fine. // Groups of friends walking, pretty intimidating // Cross the road, the other side is empty: your thing.
(17 Gamma SIgma) Yeah, well I always thought it was a shade for the CSB. Sorrynotsorry.
(18 Heritage Tower) My happy memories include playing UNO with my friends under the Kwek-kwek tower and reading the ridiculous vandals like “Jherehmie luv Ehllah 4rvr 24″. I have nothing against Jherehmie and Ehllah, but come on, that tower was [awfully] repainted. I miss the times when I don’t suddenly stop and stare at nothing while I play UNO or sing karaoke with my friends. It’s awkward; I catch myself doing it. Nope. Nope.
UPLB Tip #847: It never hurts to be observant. Get really observant until you’re almost being a stalker. But not really. There are always patterns for everything, and you just really need to be good at knowing them. For example, your crush. Your crush has a schedule; on TTh he walks out of this building at this hour, on WF he enters another. Where does he live? Which jeepney does he usually ride, kanan or kaliwa? Observation, not stalking.
(19 UPLB Gate) I’ll be back, I promise.
(20 CEM...thingy) Forget that weird piece of artsy nonsense, that buried building at the back with the swastika is the mystery. I never bothered to know the history, but hey, it’s dark, wet and eerie--must be zombies.
(21 Raymundo) I always dub this as “not my turf”. Since I’m not familiar with it, I also have adventures here (just to be clear, adventure meant walking and exploring, nothing else). I’ll miss rolling under the gate after curfew and deciding where to eat (usually takes around 15 minutes).
(22 Never-ending bridge) Again, with the bridges. Look, it’s a long way down but the aesthetics are great. There’re these pretty purple (or were they blue?) flowers and a thick canopy of ferns and broad leaves. Die pretty.
UPLB Tip #1036: Don’t shut everyone out. Ever heard of “don’t burn your bridges”? Yeah, well if you’re that kind of person who possibly needs to utilize people in the future, then go. But geez is that all there is to connections, the utility? What about just having fun conversations together, and lunches and dinners? IMHO, the people you meet at your later years in college are more likely to become “colleagues” than “friends”. Unless he’s the one. Squeal.
(23 Forestry route) While the torii is my way down, this road takes me up to the psych.
(24 UPLB) I hate my house. I hate my school. I just want to be in between, in the journey. I know I’ll get to the two points at some time in my life but not now. A view from afar would be nice. “I’ll be there,” I would say, “just give me a moment to catch up.” I’ll be right back.
Welp. That was awfully long. So here’s the blog, again. Vivid pictures, beautiful words, I am nothing.
Edit: She’s on Tumblr. OH NO.
