Off White Raven Rhapsody Part 1 of 2

I just spent waaaaay too much on a doll; -but I really didn’t buy too many Skullectors last year, so I’ll say that it evens out.- To date, this is the most I’ve ever spent on a doll. Monster High really pulls me in with their new and interesting monster head sculpts….always has and always will….so I bit the bullet and bought her. I didn’t take a photo of her box, but it is a very heavy duty box. I feel like a lot of budget went into that damn box too as it uses really thick paperboard, has four interlocking (like a much bigger version of paper board jewelry boxes) pieces, and four acrylic pieces. I am not an inbox collector, so this is just some very expensive trash to me. -I can’t even recycle the thick paperboard here locally-

Anyways, let’s see if some of my money went to the doll. -I know the lion’s share of expense is due to the Off-White brand, blah blah-

I wanted to compare her to her MH gargoyle brethren: Create a Monster Gargoyle (in a Granite City High jumpsuit I started to make him, but never finished), Garrott du Roque, and Rochelle Goyle. She seems a little more radioactive colored than the other gargoyles. Maybe she was carved out of uranocircite or metatorbernite instead of granite…. It does bother me that she doesn’t have any speckled skin. She was an expensive doll, why not make her skin the same “off-white” color and throw in some speckles! She also did not make her with clawed hands, which is very strange because Skullectors put that shit on everything. Well, let’s take a closer look at the thing I mainly bought her for. Her face!! Her face is so pretty….

Let’s compare her face sculpt and Rochelle’s.

I am very certain that the face part of the head is the same. The nose is identical, they both have the “worried bumps” in the middle of their foreheads, and the jawline looks the same. Rochelle’s lips are fully painted in, while Raven’s look under painted (especially on her upper lip). Their eyes have varying styles. Rochelle’s eyes have thicker lower lines, larger pupils and irises, and much longer eyelashes (ghoul is using the same mascara Yuma). Raven’s eye paint looks much more crisp, seem to fit the mold better, and a bit more detailed (her make-up uses several more colors than Rochelle’s). Raven’s eyebrows look a bit pixelated though.

Yup, their profiles look pretty darn similar. Now her HORNS! YESSSSSS! Look at those detailed horn ridges.

They’re detailed all the way around too.

Her painted scalp could be a bit better. You can also see that her horns are separate pieces.

Now, lets look at their “ears.”

Rochelle doesn’t have ears in the traditional spot.

Her ears are very similar to Create a Monster, but her ear tip is a lot more rounded and the inverted scalloped edge is a lot deeper too.

Garrett’s ear is actually more detailed than either of them (there is more detail on the tip of the ear and the base of the ear). The veins are much more prominent too.

Now let’s look at their wings!!

Raven’s are the BIGGEST by far. Even the shape is completely different (I thought maybe it was a bigger version of Rochelle’s but looks like it’s a completely different mold).

Rochelle’s and Creat a Monster both have two separate wings, and a lot texture to their wings. Garrote has a smoother texture and is only one piece -THAT NEVER STAYS IN- Raven’s wings actually does stay in REALLY well.

The front has veins, tons of cracks (that off white color that doesn’t like to be photographed), and lightly translucent. ….I wonder if they will reuse this mold in some aspect for Ru Paul’s dragon MH doll??

Yup, no veins on the back. I wonder how it will look if I add a light wash to those cracks…

She also has these little horns on the top of her wings. Mine had some scratched off paint…yay…also, the horns don’t look cleanly sculpted (especially compared to her horns).

Yeah, her horns look a lot more defined. Also, this is as far down as her arms go at the shoulder…

Also, her arm joint on her left arm is messed up. She can bend it but it really did not want to turn around.

Well, I guess I can look at her expensive branded clothes. In Part 2!

Even though I am very happy to own him due to how sought after he is, he is unfortunately suffering from a few issues I felt I needed to express.

First off, his clothing is not worth the $90 price tag, let alone whatever is going on in the secondary market. Having laser-cut single-sided printed cheap satin for the majority of his outfit is not it, especially since it isn't even separated, unlike other Skullector dolls. I'm genuinely shocked at how low-quality his clothes are since they should have a minimum level of quality. His sleeves aren't tailored correctly; they bunch up a lot, and with the cheap satin, they're heavily wrinkled.

For the price, his waistcoat should have been removable as it was an extraneous design element, and it added bulk to his outfit that shouldn't needed to be added. Mattel's use of the cheap-looking shiny satin is ridiculous as they could use an equally cheap matte cotton fabric instead, which would improve the appearance. Also, the fact it's black print on white fabric means the underside of the coat looks really unfinished, whereas I think a black fabric with white print would have looked much better and suited the animated style better.

With the plastic form to go over his skeleton torso, it isn't shaped like a torso piece, unlike G1 Skelita's plastic piece. Rather, it's an ill-fitting rectangle of plastic that floats about and doesn't sit flush with the torso, so it actually deforms his clothes to the point his pants don't cover his behind. This is just a really poor toy design, plain and simple.

I also do hate that his bowtie clips aren't sculpted to go around far enough around his neck; there isn't enough grip on the neck, so you're dependent on an elastic band to keep the thing in place.

Also, randomly, his torso plate unclips off. There is no glue; nothing attaches it together. There's nothing I can see why this design is here aside from saving money on a manufacturing level, as having it glued together would require more labour costs and more room for error for quality control.

And the most irritating thing is the fact that Jack's head is so squatly shaped that his long neck peg actually deforms the top of his head if you pose it too weirdly, so I ended up having to clip it off before boiling his head to get it to be undeformed.

Like, if I didn't have a very random set of circumstances that led me to own him, I would be very upset at how poorly designed this doll is and that I'm going to have to make my own outfit that meets a level of care that is lacking in this doll.

3. (taking care of each other, sleep habits, gifts)

Nika has a habit of holding on to her own as much as she can. Since her mother is prone to getting extremely worried and scared for her; her sister is careless about her as long as Nika doesn't bother her(which is difficult, cuz it seems like no matter what Nika does, she always manages to offend her); her father is always busy and moody after the work and taking care of grandfather, no time for her problems. So Nika learned to be more independent for her own sake.

It's bad when Nika is sick. She would try to brush it off and repress the coughs, keep going on her day until the fever hit her badly. Damian had figured her out once she was on the phone with the strange voice and apologized that she couldn't go out with him in a few days. He paused everything and brought some medicine and sweets to go see her. He sneaks into her temporary place in Gotham. Found out she had eaten a ton of ice cream (the Japanese way of smoothing coughs and fever) and curled up on her bed having trouble sleeping because of the fever. She is surprised but happy to see him. After coaxing Nika to eat the cough syrups, Damian held her hand until she fell asleep.

Damian always had people looking out and caring for him, regardless if he was at the Al Guhl palace with his mother or in Wayne Manor with his father and siblings. So when Nika learned that Damian was sick, she was hesitant to visit, fearing that she would bother him and his family but changed her mind soon. She rushed to see him and brought some vegan-friendly ice cream on the way. His family is surprised to see her and so is Damian. As Damian requested, Nika stays for the night by his side. She hummed her grandma’s lullaby when they were alone. She hums the song quietly until he falls asleep. (Despite the worries, Nika enjoys taking care of Damian, because he has done so much for her already.)

In the days before her menstrual period started, Nika would get moody and anxious. The first day of the period is the worst and most painful, so she would rather cuddle with Damian on the bed than do anything else. Damian would make some hot cocoa for both of them and try to smooth Nika's mind by retelling about some of his mundane days/missions with his dad and siblings, or they would watch some anime/shows on the streaming services.

Nika almost is a steady sleeper. On good nights, she sleeps like a hibernation animal and rarely moves in her sleep. (Damian would get worried and check her pulse from time to time.) But there were times when Nika had nightmares, she would stuck in a sleeping state, hard to wake up, and start a series of angsty sleep talks. (At most times Damian can only watch, if he is lucky enough to wake her up, then he can comfort her in time.) Nika's regular nightmares are fragments of the dead one's memory that she had defeated and absorbed within her ability, as well as the jaded memory of her family.

Nika soon finds out that Damian is a grabby sleeper and moves a lot in his sleep. She would be the big spoon at night and wake up in the morning to find herself had switched places with Damian being the big spoon instead. Sometimes he would steal the blanket and often hold her like a plushie to fall asleep. (Nika doesn't mind it much, she's not the type of person who gets cold easily.)

Nika gifted Damian a pressed flower bookmark that is made by herself. The bookmark contains the Nemophila(victory) and White tulips(renewal). She also gifted him Hana & Ren merchandise and other manga/anime figures that he likes.

Damian gifted Nika her favorite monster high dolls(Frankie Stein, Cleo De Nile, Ghoulia Yelps, and River Styxx). He later gifted her the Skullector Nightmare Before Christmas- Jack and Sally dolls for her birthday. Occasionally, he would surprise Nika with rare K-pop tickets/albums/merchandise, and amusingly see her sweating with a stunned face.

MH/TNBC: Family Portrait

Back again with a fresh, new drawing! It mainly leans towards Monster High fan art, but since it has characters from The Nightmare Before Christmas, it's a crossover piece! This time, I was inspired by the Skullector 2-pack of Jack and Sally that dropped recently, and I decided to make a family portrait. It's also a great opportunity for me to introduce you... Jacklyn Skellington! She's a Monster High OC I made some years back, and I'm just now reviving them in honor of the franchise's big comeback. This is my first time drawing Jack and Sally since I first drew them back in 2020 (on separate drawings), and I wanted to do something a bit different for them, especially Jack.

I made our Pumpkin King a bit "realistic" by giving his skull some shape, giving him five bony fingers instead of four, and also making the bones an off-white color to give them that aged sort of look. Also, I added elements of Jack and Sally's Skullector looks onto the characters to tie in the Monster High theme (I love Sally's dress in the 2-pack, I think having her wearing her original dress is more her style, especially after reading "Long Live the Pumpkin Queen"). I also do realize that I forgot Zero, but at that point, I had no room to put that ghostly canine. But he's still a part of the family! Also, this is just my excuse to say that the world of Nightmare Before Christmas/Halloween Town exists in the Monster High universe. Good luck telling me otherwise. 😆

fun facts about Chucky and Tiffany:

I don't have Elvira so correct me if I'm wrong but this is the first original horror Skullector set that has the same kind of display packaging as the Haunt Couture Skullectors: the plastic insert comes off and the inside scene is also removable.

Tiffany has a completely original sculpt, if im not mistaken. she looks more like the actual character and has a more pumped upper lip. Jury's out on if Chucky has an original sculpt too.

Tiffany comes packaged with her hair in a white hair net to hold her style in place

Tiffany's scalp is painted black to give the impression of dark roots

I don’t consider myself SUPER annoyed by slight face wonk. As long as it’s pretty darn even, I can live with it. My Signature Clawdeen, Cleo and Opperetta are probably the worse in my collection, but they have now been beat:

Yeaaaaaah. Her top lips are not even, her left eye is placed too high, and her right eye is mostly not even on her eye bubble….

UPDATE: Mattel emailed me back. I’m sending Queen Wonk back and then after they’ve received and processed her I am going to be sent a new one (if they still have her) or they’ll give me my money back. She took a bit over two weeks to get here. Do I want to bet they’ll still have her in stock in about two weeks….? 🤡 Well, I bought a back up just in case…if I end up getting two, the least wonky one will be kept and the other sent back.

Monster high just revealed the first look of The Nightmare Before Christmas Skullector pack! They release October 27th, 2023 at $90 USD

Read my opinions about them below!

My Opinions:

I personally don’t think I’ll be trying to get them, but they’re pretty dolls! The attention-to-detail is great and I love how close they stuck to the originals (like with Sally’s eyes)!

However, I wish they made Sally’s stitches more prominent. I didn’t even realize she had more than her mouth ones until making this post! They could’ve also given her some of the stick-on lashes that they’ve done for previous skullectors like the Haunt Couture line, but that might be a little nit-picky because I don’t personally like those lashes (that’s just me though! I feel like they make the face look a little clunky(?) but in this case it might make sense). I like the bottom half of the dress, but I wish they didn’t go with another mermaid style and sort of kept to her original one!

As for Jack, I don’t have much to complain about! The only thing I don’t really like about him is the orange on his vest/shirt. I don’t know if this will make sense, but it feels too bright and blends with Sally’s hair.

Maybe I’ll do what I did with Off White’s Electra Melody and show how I’d redesign them!

okay… i see a lot of complaints regarding mattel and monster high. specifically the skullectors / collector lines in general. and yes, the complaints are valid. i myself have a couple for them cuz mattel do be doing some… questionable things at times xD

what i’m getting at here specifically is about people complaining they’re releasing too many collector dolls back to back. it’s obvious right now in october. first we got vampire heart draculaura for pre orders, then the off-white collab, stitched in style frankie and now the nightmare before christmas set. i understand where people are coming from. i honestly do not blame them for complaining because they are expensive dolls and no one has that money to drop release after release. i get it and completely agree

sometimes i do wonder though… the collector dolls dropping back to back… maybe it’s because we’re not suppose to buy every doll. i don’t think mattel expects us to buy every single drop. i’m gonna use draculaura as an example since she literally gets everything. draculaura fans had the haunt couture doll, howliday doll, the SDCC freak du chic and then vampire heart. that’s four dolls… but they were spaced out ?? haunt couture was somewhere around february - april 2022, howliday was october - december 2022, SDCC for july 2023 and then vampire heart on october 2023… there’s gaps between the releases for the same character. and i’m leaving out next year’s clawd and draculaura howliday love edition one

howliday clawdeen, howliday skellita and stitched in style frankie to me seem to be for other collectors who either missed out on draculaura or are simply not a fan of her. of course, if you bought draculaura and want these dolls and have the income, you’re more than welcomed to get these dolls as well !! i’m not saying you can’t in case someone gets the wrong idea. by all means if you love the doll, go for it !! but the majority do not have the luxury of this income and it’s understandable. bills and necessities have to get paid. they come FIRST !!

all these collector dolls though… i believe we’re not suppose to buy all of them. just the ones that truly speak to you♡ there’s gonna be a doll made for everyone. this current release didn’t appeal to you? we have the next one. eventually one of them you’ll like. happened to me with the skullectors >.<

at times there are two releases back to back that we love and want. if you can get both, go ahead and do so. but sometimes we have to sit and debate which one we love a little more and which one we’re willing to let go. point is, if you don’t have the money for it, that’s okay !! there will be more dolls to come♡ and sometimes we see a new doll and realize: “yeah. i’m happier with this one / like this one better than the one i missed out on”

i personally loved vampire heart draculaura but i didn’t like the way her bangs were styled, so i skipped her. it’s the little details like these that count as well. sure, i could restyle her hair to my liking, but it just wouldn’t be the same. if one day i’d have to sell her, a collector would want her intact to how she was originally styled, so i’d rather not mess with it, but that’s just me :3 on collector dolls, the reason i buy them is cuz i love them the way they are originally ♡

thank you for reading if you came this far !! sorry for the ramble >.< i just want people to know it’s okay to not have every doll. it’s okay to skip a few. it’s okay to not like a small detail or even the entire doll and it seems everyone does. and the opposite is okay as well. it’s okay to love a doll everyone seems to hate. it’s all okay. everyone gets a chance at getting what they want and if you miss out, you will get the next one♡ there’s a doll out there for everyone♡

We just got some big news today in the MH fandom and so I thought I would go over it with you guys and say my thoughts on all of it. Let's get into it!

So first off is this. I have already shown this photo but I thought I would go into a deeper discussion about it here. As you can tell we will be getting some VERY big news tomorrow, news we have been waiting for months to get!

As I can tell there looks to be Frankie, Clawdeen and Draculaura. I am very curious if Draculaura is the one we have been seeing going around lately on the internet. We can see she is wearing a cute beret hat which makes me believe she is the one with the rooted eyelashes.

Now I don't know if this is going to be the basic 25 USD/31 CA dolls or a collectors edition. Its difficult to tell since these dolls will probably have rooted eyelashes and that might be seen to some as a sign that this could possibly be more expensive dolls. I am very excited to see what they look like, the Draculaura doll has been sort of like a puzzle piece where we have been figuring out what she might look like so finally seeing her and the others will be a very fun thing to see!

So this has been rumored to be inaccurate. Apparently the dolls above have different numbers and don't match up to the ones here BUT I believe this makes things very exciting because this Haunt Couture line could be completely different. Maybe it's a doll collab with Maisie Wilen? Who knows but I am going to keep my eyes peeled about this.

Okay so THIS is A LOT! So I will be going into everyone of these so I apologize if this is long.

The basics are what people believe the dolls above might be. As you can see there will be six dolls in that line and the dolls are the ones we started out with when MH first put out dolls. I personally really love this and I think it was a good idea to put out the original first few ghouls. They will be 31.70 in Canada for those of you who are Canadian like me!

The Black and White dolls I am assuming will be limited edition and why do I say this? Well I remember my Frankie doll being a limited edition and again it will be 31.70 here in Canada. I am guessing Frankie will be one of the black and white dolls who knows maybe both Clawdeen and Draculaura will have a black and white variation too.

Reproductions. To be honest I have no opinions about this but I am excited to see them. Repros are pretty basic I think but it will be great for those of us (like myself) who haven't gotten their hands on the originals and I am definitely going to be buying Draculaura when she comes out because I have wanted her original for so so so long.

Budget fashion dolls worry me a tad because I feel like it might possibly be 2015 quality but I guess it might make some parents back the hell off of the other dolls because they can choose of they want to buy the cheaper ones or the others. I am guessing this line might not have articulation but I guess we will see that for ourselves. These dolls should be 15.22 in Canada.

Skullectors. We don't have 100% information on this but I do hope the continue with these dolls. I have yet to get my hands on those dolls but I am hoping I can later.

The Coffin Bean will be a neat thing to bring back. Usually companies like MGA will focus on just the dolls so its very surprising to me to see that the competitor Mattel will be making playsets for this line. I think it's a great add for those of us who also like to collect the playsets or for kids and also it might give us a place to display our dolls. This should be 50.75 in Canada.

The Deuce and Frankie two pack. So I left this one for last for a reason and that's because I am actually very confused about this one. I would assume we would be getting Deuce with Cleo or Frankie with Jackson or Holt but we are getting Deuce and Frankie so I am very very interested in what this line will be called and I won't lie I am very curious if they are going to be a thing. Either way I am just happy to see Deuce coming back because I never had him and I think he is the coolest looking one possibly. I do hope we see more of the Mansters I know a lot of people love this line for the ghouls but theres nothing wrong with including more guys and I will definitely buy them. This might be 63.43 here in Canada.
