Heading into the general store, Mary Linton…or was it Gills again?

Windowing was such a hard time.

Mary gave a nod to the man that held the door open for her. She had come to Valentine to get her brother Jamie to come back home.

Daddy and Jamie had a fight.

…again.

Just wanting sometime to do, going to the general for a sewing book. Mary spotted a familiar black hat with a fired rope but now had beads on it. That handsome back, strong and broad. Worn blue jeans that showed off the cowboys-

Mary hand to stop herself for a moment.

She was a church going women after all.

But it couldn’t be.

Arthur Morgan, all grown up.

Not the boy she almost ran away with.

Almost married too.

But he was standing next to the sewing books, looking down at a set of paper dolls. One in each hand. Brow furrowed as he chewed on a tooth pick, trying to make a decision on something he had no understand off.

Mary wished she had pulled her corset a bit tighter now, taking out her compact she tuck a bit of hair behind her ears and checked her powers. She looked fine, not great but acceptable.

Finding her voice, Mary made her move.

“Hello Arthur.” She said,

Those same blue eyes of the boy that loved her so, looked to her as a grown man. Time had been kind to Arthur, age had made him handsome. Strong and well a man of the west.

Surprise lit up Arthur’s face. “Mary Linton, it’s been’a long time.” Arthur greeted shuffling the books of paper dolls to his chest as he tipped his hat, a ring caught Mary’s eye. She had no clue what material it was but turquoise was imbedded in it. “You look well.”

“It’s…Gill’s again…” Mary shuffled

“Sorry to hear that.” Arthur gave a nod of his head. “What brings you, here?”

“Oh um, Jamie. He’s bound and determined to set up an apple orchard. Dropped out of school, daddy if awfully upset.”

Arthur nodded and looked back to the paper dolls at hand.

“Do you? Live here?” Mary asked

“Naw, passin’ through.” He looked to Mary now. “Can I ask ya somethin? Need a women’s opinion.” Arthur asked surprising Mary, maybe Arthur has changed? He used to jump at the idea of helping her.

Mary blinked “I suppose.”

“My littlest is about ta be four, been wantin’ paper dolls like her big sister. But there are so many? Ladies and pets…cuse she loves critters. Or maybe the babydoll one? She’s fascinated because we have a new baby comin’. Should I just buy paper and make her some?” He showed the two boxes to Mary.

Mary was very surprised now. Arthur had married? He has children? She cleared her throat.

“If memory serves you are a wonderful artist. I would suggest making the dolls. She would probably like the ‘critters’ you’ve drawn better than the pets. She is a Morgan.” Mary was baiting the man to see if he was married. “How many children do you have?” She asked

Taking the advice Arthur nodded and set the packages down before picking up the cardstock and colored pencils along with wax paper. “Thank ya, I have two. Oldest is almost seven she’s a handful my Dyani, then I have my little girl Awinita. She wants to be like’er sister so badly.”

“You married an in-“

“Mary Gills, don’t you start.” Arthur warned “you married someone too.” He pointed out. Taking out his pocket watch and checked the time. Taking a breath Arthur forced himself to relax.

“Good seein’ ya, wish ya all the best. I gotta get going.” Arthur went to pay, this also surprised Mary. She couldn’t help herself grabbing Arthur’s arm.

“Arthur, I still think of you fondly.” She had no idea why she blurted this out. “Would you..ever consider…”

Arthur pressed a finger to her lips. “Now Mary, we had our time. Did I love ya with everything I had? Yes. But..I got me someone who loves me…even when I was beaten and broken. I love’em too, makes me a better man. I got my girls, gotta baby comin’ and a life. A honest one too.” He moved his hand away now.

“Ya understand?”

Mary looked down unable to meet the man’s eyes. “Forgive me, I…suppose I just needed to…truly see if things were over.” She blinked as a thought hit her.

“Man?” She mumbled to herself as Arthur paid and practically ran out the door. A hand on his lower belly.

“Arthur Smith! ya damn fool. Got to think about Charles again and ran ya mouth.” Arthur grumbled to himself heading to the horse stables where his family was.

I found that 52/198 of representations of Mary are neutral (26,3%), 59/198 are positive (29,8%)  and 87/198  are negative (43,3%). The works counted in these percentages meet the criteria of mentioning her at least twice beyond a neutral statement of her breaking up with Arthur Morgan, are in English or Finnish, give enough characterization for her to be classifiable between these three categories. 58/198 (29,3%)  of these stories have her pinned as a character of at least some significance. 

Arthur Morgan and Mary Gillis-Linton are paired together in 49/198 or 24,7%, she is represented positively in 36/49 (73,5%), neutrally in 6/49 (12,2%) and 7/49 (14,3%).

When Arthur Morgan and a reader insert/original character are paired together, Mary is represented positively 1/53 (1,9%), neutrally 12/53 (22,6%)  and negatively 40/53 (75,5%)

A flaw was that this was just one person conducting this and my own biases could have influenced the results. Most of the point of this was to scream into the void, prove i'm not crazy and also to have data to throw at my friend @red-dead-bisexual.

Okay right off the bat I'm gonna say I don't ship with Arthur:

Charles, Sadie or John.

I don't hate those ships at all. I really don't. I personally see a close platonic bond with them. You can have close platonic bonds like that. I do support those making that content though. Go fam! I support y'all!!

For me however who I ship with Arthur (this is the hear me out section):

Ocs/self inserts: Hell yeah I support y'all doing your thing! I support you and love it! Go go go!

Mary Gillis: Despite their history Arthur and Mary have a STRONG chemistry and they act like teenagers in love when you do the mission where you go on a date. They're hella cute

Albert Morson: ART AND NATURE BOYFRIENDS! Despite the short time together they become friends and it's so cute on how excited they are to see one another. like "Hi Arthur :D" "Hi Albert :D"

Mary-Beth Gaskill: HEAR ME OUT GUYS PLZ! Arthur and her are so fun to see on screen together and they seem to be close and bond over journaling, writing, etc. Arthur is sweet(platonically) on all the girls in camp but he acts like Mary-Beth's hype man. The potential is too cute to me. Sure it's an age gap but it's not terrible. (better than Dutch hitting on her imo)

Kieran Duffy: GUYS PL HEAR ME OUT PLZ! When Arthur isn't bullying Kieran he seems genuinely interested in him and Kieran speaks up and stands up to him. Kieran is too good of a boy despite being bullied you can tell despite being scared of Arthur he likes him. The potential of horse girl girlfriends!!!

I've found the best characters for my AEW/WWE Fan-Fiction stories, I got the main boys from the Vampire Diaries and the Originals, and got the three married wives and a former girlfriend turned friend.

We know that most of the wrestlers here will be faces or heels, but I want them as the baddest bosses while the good guys are gonna be portrayed as sixteen newcomers who's shorter.

I figured that modern day of straight history meets attitude era for their bad influence; my sixteen OCs doesn't care for the rules and are the most rebellious people in WWE.

This takes place from SummerSlam 2012 for the Fallen Angels and their first victory in Night of Champions: Gold Rush; Survivor Series 2012 for the Shield and their first victory in TLC; Royal Rumble 2013 for the Dark Gods and their first victory in Elimination Chamber; WrestleMania 29 for the Resistance and their first victory in Extreme Rules; they're known as the Pack of Lone Wolves.

For each OC stable...their names are the following; the Unholy Circle for the girls, the Genesis for the girls, the Blood Order for the boys, and the Demolition for the boys; they're the Pride of Wild Lions.

🍹 Okay SO- Harlows basic backstory is his mom started the Irish mob in Chicago & him and his older brother ran away. Harlow joins the gang after helping Dutch and Arthur escape Valentine during a shootout, him and Arthur eventually fall in love & during chapter 6 Arthur makes Harlow promise to check on Mary once hes gone. (Ow). After about a year Harlow checks in on Mary & tells her what happened. He takes her to see Arthur's grave and they bond during the trip, and she offers him work as an escort/bodyguard. (Bc her dad is a nightmare person, the Gillises has a lot enemies lmao). Harlows family did business with Mr Gillis so he was THRILLED to have Harlow associated with them...until Mary started to catch feelings. Harlow was the only other person who could understand the grief of losing Arthur yknow and he had an abusive relationship with his mother so they had a lot to bond over. Okay sorry this is too long but Mary gets pregnant, Mr Gillis officially 'disowns' her and takes her inheritance out of the will. They move to Saint Denis with Jamie, have a son named Vitorio and open a small restaurant. Later in the storyline they have a daughter named Matilda too 😩 okay I'm done thank you for coming to my OC Ted talk

Drabble:

Warning: Gore, Animal Cruelty, Death, Choking, Manipulation, Torture, Blood.

Struggling to even speak out loud as if something is seal their mouth shut. They manage to catch a small innocent flicky and grasping it as if it's last testament they want to do. Tail looks at the panicked bird, the expressions looks so familiar then the thought of that new victim that Xen has been keeping an eye on.

Griping a sharp object as it struggles to put it against the mouth and felt another snap. The pain spreads through their lips as this poor bird is watch in horror.

Blood drips down the white fur, but Tail can now manage to half smile properly.

".....H-Hey....Y-You remind me of someone........You kept on singing back there....."

Talking is still a struggle for them as the bird panicks to break free as the Red Furred Fox's grip becomes tighter and tighter and then.....

..........SNAP!

"Ah.....it's gone....just like them......" Tail casually dropping the carcass of the bird that clearly has their neck snapped. Looking over at the other direction as they sees the small light blue hedgehog stop to look at the sight of Tail. Seeing their starry silver eyes looking down at the poor Flicky and not knowing what to do. All they can see is this small red fox approaching to them with blood on their hands and as if on cue.

"Hello...Bluebird....Wanna play?"

Gem I saw in your tags for "What If?" that it's an Arthur x OC fic. And I'm curious. What's your thoughts on Mary Gillis Linton? Do you like her or do you hate her?

Ah! This is actually a good question!

I actually love Mary! Her as a character and the complex relationship she has with Arthur is genuinely heartbreaking and I was honestly rooting for them.

But it's honestly understandable why they never worked out. Arthur is trapped in his outlaw lifestyle and she's in her civilized. Classic "The Cowboy rides into the sunset" story.

However with the story of What if, I GENUINELY tried to figure out how their relationship would be with Phoebe involved. I had a draft where Arthur, Mary and Phoebe live in Saint Denis. But as how Mary is as a character I think even if she learned to love Phoebe I feel there'd still be some hurt and sadness in a sense that he has a child from another women(even though they weren't a couple when it happened). Doesn't exactly give the tone of story I'd like to explore.

It makes more sense that Arthur would work things out with Jesse and being an eventual couple, more than a friendly rivalry and a one night stand. They're both outlaws, they both understand one another. Plus they're both adjusting to civilization together.

I do like the idea that Arthur and Mary do makeup and are okay with never being together again though. Okay with moving on and just acknowledging that they were once in love and even if they do still care deeply for each other, they have to let go. I want to give them that closure that they honestly do deserve.

I also did play with the idea of poly but that didn't work either
