I realized while drawing this that I accidentally put the boys in left-to-right order from least- to most-fucked up face 😂 Ben and his perfect nose 🙄🤣 IDK what he's saying but probably something engineered specifically to make Peter mad.

He's smiling. 🙂💢 See? Busted nose. Turns out I also put them in order of "least to most traumatized," now that I think about it... Peter is a little less uptight by 2016 but... only a little. He might even not be wearing the costume under his clothes.

I know you're probably thinking "how the fuck is Ben less traumatized than Peter?" but in this case it's true. Ben is the most well-adjusted of them all. Comparatively.

Kaine is definitely wearing his costume under his clothes. Head to toe coverage, no skin except face and hands basically ever. When I sat down to sketch this pic this morning I realized that he probably doesn't like having his picture taken, because he has very bad self-esteem (understatement) and lots of scars, but probably also for Warren reasons, as essentially an ex-lab specimen. So he's hiding.

His hair would be in the process of growing back out from a buzzcut, if it's November 2016... so a bit longer than his shoulders, most likely.

If it wasn't like, May's idea to take the pic and Janine w/ the camera Kaine would not be tolerating this. He'd either leave or break the camera LOL but... if May wants a pic... he can at least pretend to be in it.

Miss Maybelle... The only one in the pic who doesn't have anything weird going on (ah, her strange nephews and their strange eyes). She has an O2 tank though. Her lungs are not very strong after 2012 because ummmm... Kaine stabbed her in the chest. (He apologized, it's fine 😓😅)

Ben's tan lines 😂 peter has 'em too but Peter is all covered up obv. Peter's neck tan line is actually way higher up though, because his costume has a higher neckline so he has to wear higher collars/scarves/whatever even if he rolls the neck down. But (not pictured) Peter's arms are more tan than Ben's because Ben's Scarlet sleeves are longer than Peter's Spidey sleeves. Obv Ben isn't wearing (the top of) his costume in this pic though. and they can both roll the sleeves up anyway.

That's the watch Peter got May for her birthday in 2007 btw. Actually the color is wrong because I didn't bother to check my own #lore but also because I almost forgot to color it at all (lol whoops) so I was just like. It's purple, I remember that much. But the strap is supposed to be "pale violet linen."

I also almost forgot to draw Peter's wedding band entirely 😂 Luckily I remembered! lol

Kaine is wearing a kilt, by the way (over jeans or leggings or something probably... well, maybe not leggings if his costume is underneath...) My goal is for him to find a different way of expressing his masculinity. related to why i am sticking to pink for his theme color (for costume etc.) and letting him grow his hair back out. I think he probably has some genders going on but not in the way that Flash has. He's not a girl. More like he wants to be nothing at all... null gender... etc... but also he doesn't have the language for that and would likely push back against it because of the way he was treated by Warren and the issues he has with like. personhood and manhood... but experimenting with (expensive) clothing is a way for him to explore his own autonomy in spite of that treatment and a way to learn to hate himself a little bit less, maybe, even though he's still very insecure.

he also has a "nazi punks fuck off" shirt, but... he wouldn't wear that to thanksgiving with aunt may... probably. I'm sure his leather jacket is around here somewhere...

i picked thanksgiving arbitrarily btw 😂 it just made the most sense as a reason for may to force i mean ask them all to come over and get pictures and stuff. kaine leaves nyc in 2012 following ben and only comes back for good in 2016, but when he and aracely first come up in the summer there's a bunch of stuff happening so it makes sense to do fall, once it's settled down...

i went to a punk/drag show for my birthday weekend (with my MOM. dire.) and the mosh pit was such a natural experience

hi! im not really an archivist or the best person to ask for a compilation, but i can talk a little bit about their friendship if you like! calling on my talented and dedicated friend @souryogurt64 to fact check and confirm some of these details, if you have time of course!

pete and joe were the founding members of fall out boy, and they met while petes licence was suspended, while arma was a thing. iirc, pete got stranded at a gas station or convenience store or soemthing like that and was approached by this kid who was kind of a fan and struck up a conversation with him. he found out he had a van (which is very valuable in the hardcore world, free wheels) and that he really knew his shit when it came to guitar. he got a ride back home from joe and i think kinda got him to be his chaffeur for a while before asking him to join arma as a touring guitarist because their actual guitarist couldnt make it* (except for the one show where someone cool was gonna be in the audience, he promptly made time to play and joe was booted to merch). apparently joe was hazed sooo bad, they stole his underwear and he called home crying, but he finished the tour. eventually he and pete decided to start a band together, though they didnt have a name, and they started putting out feelers for other members.

from what i can tell from joe, they took "nazi punks FUCK OFF" extremely seriously, and it definitely makes sense for the two of them, a biracial black dude and a jewish kid in the scene. petes super protective of joe, as hes said time and time again: "joes the spazziest kid i know, but hes like my little brother. i can say whatever i want about him but if you do it, ill punch you in the face". being older, it checks out that hed be super protective (kinda like i am of bipoc baby emos and those of religious minorities now lol). theres no way those two didnt get called slurs regularly. i mean im pretty sure joe mentioned getting called the k slur, pete speaks about feeling extremely out of place whenever he feels like it wont harsh the vibe (which i totally understand) but the two of them have a special bond that only two people who experience xenophobic bigotry in the same space can experience.

theres this one interview, i remember pete and joe were both in suits and joe had a very cute ponytail, srar era im pretty sure, at like some after party where joe starts talking at length about the music and the writing process and the composition and #nerdshit and petes just kinda staring at him, like a mentor proudly watching their student completely surpass them. thats the two of em.

i cant point very conclusively of examples of them defending each other from bigotry but i do know joe specifically is SUPER well read on antiblackness and has internalized the fact that hes still white, to the point where during that podcast ive been mentioning (the badass jews podcast) the host gets a little antiblack, kind of blaming the entire black community for the antisemitism of nick canon and jay z and joe very firmly does not buy into it. plus theres the hanukkiah post i referenced in my post btw (thanks to @ofalltheginjoints for digging this up)

im p sure he also posted about it to his story but i cant remember it. anyway the two of them are the blueprint for jewish and black solidarity, and their friendship is the foundation of fall out boy so basically fall out boy is fundamentally and diametrically opposed to racism and antisemitism at its core.

BnHA Chapter 280: I Am Red Riot

Previously on BnHA: The pro heroes over at Gunga Mountain struggled against Gigantomachia and the League until finally Midnight was all, “fuck it, let’s just put the kids in charge.” Momo immediately got to work organizing a sophisticated counteroffensive involving an exploding swamp, a bunch of sedative cans, and a massive coordinated team attack. I gotta tell you guys, it’s really something to watch a large-scale group attack in which all of the team members are actually competent. I don’t know what Japan put in the water when all these sixteen-year-olds were growing up, but that shit has paid off big time, and basically the only reason Machia hasn’t gone down yet is because he cheated and was all “sneeze” and the kids all got blown away because they are little and because he is really, really big. Anyway so then Dabi set the forest on fire because he loves doing that, and the chapter ended with Mina using her Acid Man attack to make herself FUCKIN’ FIREPROOF so she could charge through the woods ready to save the day and stuff!

Today on BnHA: Mina launches herself straight at Machia like the beautiful corrosive wild child she is, but then everything goes to shit when she recognizes him from that one time she almost got murdered while giving a strange man directions. Just when it’s looking like she might get killed for real this time, KIRISHIMA SHOWS UP TO SAVE THE DAY AND SHOVES HER TO SAFETY AND IS ALL “BOTTOMS UP” AND HEAVES A LITERAL CAN OF WHOOPASS RIGHT IN MACHIA’S MOUTH. At this point the grown-ups are all “oh wow look at that, time for us to take over for you kids now, don’t worry we’ve got it all under control” because Oh Those Wacky Pros and all that, but at least Majestic finally deigns to show his face so that’s a plus! The chapter ends with us cutting back to the Jakku battle, where Tomura is curled up in a little ball all “curse you heroes, how dare you [checks notes] save people all the time”, which is a real take and a half. Anyway so things are looking up, which can only mean everyone is about to die. That’s how it works, right. Shit.

fuck your ugly-ass runes

I’m frustrated with people who want “their” cultural symbols handed to them on a silver platter. They want to “reclaim” things that were never anything except Nazi symbols, like the 12-spoked black sun or the symbol of a Nazi volunteer militia, yet they can’t be bothered to figure out what runes Vikings used. Nazis say “here are the symbols of our ancestral heritage (that are a bunch of crap we made up) and you all go “give it back!” When it comes to the runes they took 1,500 years of tradition and steamrolled it. It could never have been any other way. Nationalism is the enemy of culture. They cannot coexist in harmony. Nationalism is piss on the graves of our ancestors.

I keep seeing people say that they want to reclaim the runes, but you can’t reclaim something that was never yours. And if your conception of the runes is coterminous with Nazi use of them, then it is shallow, superficial, not worth saving, the death of tradition with a few half-rotten specimens preserved pinned under glass.

I know it’s hard when you don’t know who you can trust. We wouldn’t be in this situation without wolves in sheep’s clothing sneaking lies between a handful of facts to distract you (Thorsson/Flowers). We have a lot of work to do uprooting the deceit that lies at the core of modern heathen reception of the runes. Now’s a good time to start. Since the part of the problem that’s most active on everyone’s mind regards visual perception of symbols of Norse and Germanic culture this is gonna focus on that, with lots of pictures.

Nazis didn’t take “runes,” they took an aesthetic more or less from the Gallehus horn.

This one particular object has runes that happen to appeal to their sense of aesthetics and as a result became “the” runes, and all of you people fell for it. They’re into straight lines because there were Nazi philologists who thought runes were the original writing system that the Mediterranean alphabets ripped off (echoing Johan Bure in the 16th century). The straight lines reminded of their origin in ancient rock carvings (rather than the truth, that their origin is in the (Semitic) Phoenician alphabet via something else like Latin, Greek, another Italic alphabet, or perhaps even with direct influence from a Semitic source). They were considered a symbolic mystical system first, that later achieved some utility as a writing system. The pristine geometric shapes reflect their archetypal mystical nature (specifically within the “Ariosophical” (racist) Armanen system of runes based on a “hexagonal crystal structure”). And I guess these blocky slabs are “manly” or something.

So yeah, it relates to an actual inscription but it’s just an aesthetic. I know this because I can do this:

These are Latin letters that “look like runes.” The only problem is, they don’t. They look like one inscription that reads “I, Hlewagastiʀ Holtijaʀ, am a huge fucking bigshot who drinks out of gold.” The non-runologist part of me is glad his shit got stolen and melted down.

Most of this goes for the other widely-visible variant -- the same thing but with thin lines (like tawido at the end above). Those are somewhat better represented in the runic corpus but it’s not because that’s what runes “are,” it’s because it’s easier and not everyone is a professional. I’m still gonna attack the idea that these are in any way prototypical. In fact I believe that for most (but not all) rune-carvers rounded runes were the prototype, and when this wasn’t adhered to it was for stylistic or utilitarian reasons.

Runes that don’t follow this aesthetic -- which is most actual runes -- will not even be recognized as runes by most people.

The rest is long and full of images so I will save your dash but the punchline is that if you want to save the runes from Nazis the first step is knowing them -- not as the Nazis conceived of them but as they exist in the wild, because then you realize that what was taken was nothing compared to what we rob ourselves of by falling for imposter “tradition.”

If runes had been used continuously they would probably be about as different from Latin letters as Greek and Cyrillic scripts -- that is, no inherent stylistic differences, just different inherited underlying shapes. I mean, look at early Latin script:

This beautiful text here is Gothic, the precious lovechild of runes and the Greek alphabet. The result of adapting to new contexts and new challenges.

The reason runes aren’t as diverse in appearance as Latin is because there just isn’t as much of them. If they were used for writing long texts they’ve probably have developed minuscules and all sorts of other variants. But even within the much more limited corpus we see that runes can be:

Here’s the thing. Nazis are idealist essentialists, they believe in the “original” “unpolluted” archetypal proto-form of things. Runes have never been any of those things. Runes have always been artists trying to one-up each other, nerds trying to push the boundaries of weirdness, young punks scrawling graffiti, and at least later on also moms carving shopping lists so dad doesn’t forget that little Sigríðr needs new gloves. Stop holding yourself to a standard that doesn’t exist because you found it in a book by some crypto-fascist masquerading as a runologist. From the second person to carve runes on, there were no prototypical runic forms -- carvers saw a variety of related symbols standing for the same thing, formulated their own idea of their own prototype of it and how to use it, and deployed it in combination with context plus willingness to put in time and effort. The beauty of runes is -- like all writing -- is their infinite potential for creative expression.

forests are awesome - they are green and smell amazing, you can spot a lot of wild animals and the atmosphere is very serene and calming. I’ll always pick forests over beaches, unless the beach is all sand or small round marble stones, the water is clear without the detached, rotting algae stuff that floats around and ew, the sun has fucked off so I don’t get sunburnt (my skin always skips the tan stage right to red and I prefer pale skin anyway) and all sweaty and shit, there are NO people beside those I’m there with and I do NOT spot any animal while in the water that’s bigger than like 5cm. Because even though I love and respect it deeply, I’m genuinely afraid of sea life, I don’t care that there are lots of totally harmless creatures. …lmao, I feel like a rich asshole saying all that - way too many demands. (sorry sea/ocean, I love you, but you freak me the fuck out)

BEST TRACKS OF 2017-ARTISTS LIST #87

Brooklyn based post-funk balladeer Fusilier releases tunes that make you want to dance! Here he shares the tunes that made his 2017! 

1. L'Rain -- Heavy (But Not in Wait)

L'Rain's album starts like the first stripe of red in the sky at dawn. That language might seem overly cinematic in most cases, but these gorgeous twinkly guitar loops (that are just as great live BTW) merit my most flowery prose. Don't get me wrong, this song and album as a whole are as striking for their sincerity as for their beauty. Every track is a master class in being both approachable and worth the encounter.

2. Steve Lacy -- Dark Red

Picking a favorite song off of the Steve Lacy EP is like picking your favorite side at Thanksgiving. If your family is like mine, you're just happy to be at the table. The song that I think works best for my voice when I'm dancing around the house in my underwear is the one that happened to have been everywhere. Dark Red is a bop a swing and a do si do. It's the sort of modern retro hit that would have always been and will always be exciting.

3. Rah Rah Gabor -- Omar Back

I gotta say, this song coulda been trash and still have won me over for it's use of the name and sounds of one of my favorite queer characters, the iconic Omar Little from The Wire. When you find out it's not Omar comin, but Rah Rah, it's not any less savage. Rah Rah so effortless paints pictures of the life they want at any cost that it makes me want to ask for more. This song is an anthem for me at my most used. When my face is bruised from fighting for my life (metaphorically for me maybe not for you) I look myself dead in the face and repeat before I leave the house, you come at the king you best not miss.

4. Show Me the Body ft Dreamcrusher -- Hungry

I went to a Dreamcrusher show over the summer, which anyone who has seen them can attest, is a total sensory experience. Throughout all the fog and confusion of lights and cameras, the synth pattern changed and this new figure climbs the stage and hits his head with the microphone and I swear to baby jesus the 15 year old me had never been so happy in his life. This track is the perfect accompaniment to a day in the twentieth century decay that is the modern American city. It's kind of trap, but not rap and kind of rock but completely electronic. It is the future. Bear witness

5. BbyMutha -- Rules

Other things that make teenage me happy is old Three 6 Mafia and southern rap in general. So when I was at the knockdown center in February and they announced that there was a rapper from Tennessee coming up, I was more than willing to give it a shot. I was there with friends dancing and having a good time when  BbyMutha laid down the rules, and I had to stop to listen. She was preaching the gospel. For anybody moving from say Sarasota to Queens looking to start a new life trying to figure out where they went wrong, BbyMutha will tell you exactly what you can and cannot do if you want to stay above the fray. YOU CAN'T GIVE... well go see what she say. It will change your life.

6. Sza -- Supermodel

This whole list a things that make me tick and anyone who knows me or has heard a sneak of my upcoming EP (wink wink) knows, strummed major 7th guitar chords are on the fucking list. So needless to say, this charm of a track had me hooked before Sza's first breath. But after she does take that breath, what comes out had my face hot and wet with tears of joy. This track is raw in the way that I think is the entire point of the artist, namely to elevate what we're told to obscure when it feels dishonest to hide. This whole album is full of anthems for those that want to be their whole selves, but when Sza sings these lyrics over a track with none of the safety of a full pop production she gives permission to be just a little extra vulnerable every day.

7. Katie Von Schleicher -- Soon

When I need cheering up, I don't listen to happy music. I listen to music that understands my mood and reminds me that sadness can be its own gift on the way to greater spaces. Von Schleicher's discography is more or less that in a nutshell for me personally, but no where is the feeling more acute than in Soon, a song made to close the curtain on a defeat to get ready to play on. I'm gonna get there soon...

8. Residente -- Desencuentro

Residente traveled the world with a map based on his own DNA trying to better understand his own identity and made music out of it. The album is peppered with explorations of the body and its relation to the universe at large. If that sounds a touch pretentious, I swear it's not. It promises no answers just questions and observations. My favorite track is his duet with French artist Soko. It's an arresting piano ballad about being beautifully out of sync with another person. An image that comes to fruition when the two sing the same melody in two different languages at each other. Fine, maybe it's a little pretentious but if you've lived in New York in the spring you've been there.

9. Ho99o9 -- Street Power

People think punk isn't a black genre. I beg to differ and so does Ho99o9. Plus this isn't your nazi cousin's punk. This is the 21st century where we can put 808s and trap high hats in a song and still mosh because we're cultured adults who as a collective are mad as hell and dying to show you what we can do together.

10. Benjamin Clementine -- Quintessence

This song is Debussy meets Nina Simone which is to say that it's hands down the prettiest thing I've heard this year. Benjamin Clementine makes music that can stop time, but is not without its edges. This song is the sound of solemnly accepting ones duty. It's the sound of responsibility in all of its humbling weight. It's the sound of resistance. It reminds me that revolution can be found in smiles. And that love can be the ultimate act of rebellion.

conversations I have had since the 2016 election:

with my partner on election night both of us in shock

we scroll through our social media feeds

mine is filled with trans people panicking about getting passports ASAP for fear the Trump administration

will prevent access to changing gender markers

and pass voter restriction laws making it more difficult to vote without one my partner says people on her feed are fretting

about the possibility of queer internment camps I tell her that seems really far-fetched

that many many things would have to go wrong before reaching that point (then I think to myself, “but it has happened in the past”)

we spend the rest of the night lying in bed together with insomnia

holding one another

and making morbid jokes

with much younger friends the night after the election

at the weekly queer karaoke night we all go to they are distraught

feeling hopeless

so I try to console them

I tell them about living through similar political shifts in the past like in the early 2000s after Bush was elected

I tell them about the mass protests against his wars how despite all the harm of his regressive policies queer people survived

in some ways thrived

I tell them about the queer/trans performance scene during that era how we shouted our manifestoes

shrieked our punk rock songs

spat out beautiful and subversive spoken word poems we celebrated our bodies

our identities

at drag and burlesque events

at queer dance parties and benefit shows

I’m not sure if my stories cheered them up at all but for the rest of the night

we sang cheesy karaoke songs at the top of our lungs

it was really cathartic

  with an ex-partner

who is now raising a child in Ohio

she tells me how she heard gunfire on election night

Trump supporters firing their weapons in the air in celebration the next day

someone sprayed racist epithets on a building downtown she then tells me about

her plans to move to Canada

with an acquaintance

who identifies as a moderate they didn’t vote for Trump

and were disappointed by the election result

but they were not especially worried about the next four years things will work themselves out

they always do they said

(I think to myself, that’s easy to say when you’re white, straight, and well off) I tell them that they have no idea

what we are all in for

yelling at my computer

every time I see an op-ed or election post-mortem claiming that liberals need to get out of our “elitist bubble”

and have sympathy for working-class middle-American Trump supporters what the fuck?!

many of my friends moved from middle America to this costal big city

in order to escape

the rampant racism, sexism, and queerphobia of their hometowns (btw, these are all forms of elitism!)

many of us are struggling to get by too

so where the fuck is middle America’s sympathy for us?

after Republicans announce they plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act both of us are self-employed artists barely making ends meet

we wonder how we will afford health insurance without it

we wonder whether we will even be able to get health insurance since we both have pre-conditions

she has a chronic illness

I’m a transsexual and cancer survivor

emailing someone who I haven’t seen in a while my usual opening greeting:

“I hope you have been well!” seems all wrong

I modify it by adding:

“or at least relatively well given the state of the world” in their reply

they mention that they too have started using a similar qualifier when they greet people nowadays

bargaining with myself

as I struggle with writer’s block (which normally isn’t an issue for me) I stare at the blank page

trying (unsuccessfully) to resist checking Twitter to see what ridiculously horrible

or horribly ridiculous

(and many times, simply horribly horrible) Trump-related news story is just now unfolding

the humorous novel that I’ve spent the last two years working on suddenly does not seem very relevant

so I decide to focus on writing activist pieces again upon doing so

I suddenly feel energized

the creative juices are finally flowing! after writing five of them

I notice that all of them include the phrase “white nationalism”

(I guess this poem makes it six)

I have been an activist for the last twenty years mostly on LGBTQ+ issues

feminism and intersectionality

trying to raise awareness about marginalized populations and challenging discrimination

but quite honestly

I never imagined that things would get so bad that I would have to focus my activism

on fighting Nazis

the world usually seems fairly static incremental change here and there

but otherwise fairly recognizable from year to year but occasionally

the world changes in drastic and dramatic ways sometimes for the better

sometimes for the worse

I am not sure where we are heading but for the first time in my life

I have no idea what the world will look like one year from now
