NARUTO thoughts; team 7
This is vastly different from my usual type of post but I’ve been meaning to post a bit of a rant about Naruto since it’s one of my old favourite’s, and it’s my tumblr, I can post whatever lame things I want. To begin with, I would like to preface that my favourite characters are the original Team 7 (no not the old people, I’m talking about Kakashi’s Team 7), which I think will be kind of obvious throughout this post considering this post is literally about the generations of Team 7 and its reflections on the new gens. Also, yes this post will contain spoilers for everything to do with Naruto and possibly some spin offs. Cry about it.
The general premise of Team 7 as an ongoing generational thing is so interesting to me, because it's like an exploration of generational trauma but for anime dudebros who think that Naruto is just some 2D anime on how Naruto and Sasuke get so many women and fight all the time (even though it technically is 2D). The idea that tragedy follows Team 7 through every generation is incredible, ignoring the fact that Team 7 seems to always have a set archetype with its members, which seriously isn't working but no one thinks to change it. And since a member of Team 7 or perhaps someone related to Team 7 will continue to teach the next lot of them, it very much is a generational thing. It always seems to follow the same kind of archetype, but with slight variations.
Cool and aloof genius who’s just a Little Traumatised (probably)
Hot-headed and emotional loser who has a heart the size of a country
girl.
I have another post planned about sexism in Naruto but for now, simply ‘girl’ seems to fit best in accordance with the introduction of every female Team 7 member (sans Sarada, she was a girlboss from day 1). This dynamic doesn’t seem to be doing pretty well for them because the Cool and aloof genius ends up more traumatised/defects from the village, and the hot-headed emotional loser desperately tries and pulls the team together/grates so harshly against the Cool and aloof genius he ends up tearing himself apart in the process, whilst the girl waits quietly in the background, silently trying to catch-up with her teammates.
I see many people comparing the female team member, specifically Sakura, to the heart of Team 7 but I disagree with that a ridiculous amount because the heart is so clearly Naruto. He’s the one who’s dragging Sasuke back to Konoha, constantly holding onto the idea of Team 7 as a team, a family. Sasuke is the soul, the reason all other team members work so hard, so they can match him and bring him home. And Sakura is the mind, the textbook genius who works the hardest to catch up to her teammates, using her incredible intellect to prop the team up where their lack of other skills becomes apparent.
As a side note, I don’t believe that Konohamaru’s Team 7 adheres to the previous generations of Team 7 and the archetype which is interesting because previously it’s Cool and aloof genius (Orochimaru, Kakashi, Sasuke), hot-headed emotional loser (Jiraiya, Obito, Naruto), and girl (Tsunade, Rin, Sakura), but the new gen of Team 7 differs because they are the amalgamation of 3 whole generations of bad endings for Team 7 and they must eventually learn from their mistake and get their shit together. Boruto, although being the loudest, is actually the Cool and aloof genius. Sarada has a heart the size of a country and dreams to be Hokage. And Mitsuki is girl (not actually but in terms of personality he hasn’t got much going on).
I think my favourite part of this however, is the idea that with each generation, the Team gets better, and they learn from the mistakes of the previous generation, even if they didn’t know them personally. And I think this is best presented with Kakashi’s Team 7, because not only were they taught by Kakashi, a member of the previous generations Team 7, but they were also taught individually by the Sannin, all who were members of the first Team 7, and they learn from both of these Team 7’s and they combine it all into the best possible dynamic for Team 7. Team Sarutobi loses Orochimaru and the team splits off to go their own separate ways, whereas team Minato sticks together as best they can until everyone except Kakashi dies, but with this, he takes the words of his father to heart and instills them in his Team 7. “Those who break the rules are scum.... but those who abandon their friends are worse than scum” he says, and they take this to heart. Where Sarutobi’s Team 7 abandoned their teammate Orochimaru when he defected, Sakura and Naruto never give up on Sasuke, and where Minato’s Team 7 ends in everyone's death after their initial incompatibility, Kakashi’s Team 7 learns and becomes the strongest shinobi like ever.
Yes, this mostly excludes Konohamaru’s Team 7, but I think that they deserve their own analysis, because their parents worked hard so they have the weight of their predecessors' names, but none of the suffering that the previous generations did. The new generation of Team 7 represents the least traumatised Team 7, and also specifically backs away from the generational inheritance that’s prominent in Naruto, probably because of the time gap between Naruto and Boruto.
As a reference to a point I made about Kakashi before, having him revived from the dead was just so stupid. I love Kakashi don’t get me wrong, but having him be revived was weird because like, how come everyone else dies? Lord knows Kakashi probably wanted to die anyway, living just continues to fuel his ridiculous guilt complex.
This post was so mean in places but after years in this fandom, I’ve had to alter my behaviour and writing style to mimic the toxic fans who are assholes to everyone, especially when in relation to women (which I spoke about in a positive light, god forbid). To all those lovely people who probably thought ‘wow, this person is so crass and rude’ I swear my other posts are much nicer in comparison :)
