DAD AFO THEORY

We're very close to the end of Bnha, and we still have no clues, no news, nothing, about Izuku's father. It's really surprising, and seems to hide something

Welcome to my dad afo theory, this is gonna be very, very long :)

Some people can think that it's just an extreme fanon theory, but it's not. And we're gonna see why :)

I'm gonna talk you about one of the biggest mystery of bnha, the question everyone has asked themselves at least once while reading the manga, or watching the anime:

where the fuck is izuku's dad.

There is two situation really really basic, about protaginists families.

The first one is simple:

•the protagonist/main caracter must have at least 1 parent dead. Do I have to mention an exemple? No.

This rule is not applicated in bnha, because Izuku's two parent are still alive.

Then the second situation:

• if the two parents are alive, one of them is surely absent. We don't know anything about the absent one, so this is a mystey.

Gimme one shonen anime where the two parents are alive and present at same time? Okay we can continue.

When we think about that, horikoshi don't really have a reason to hide the identity of izuku's dad. We're at a dead point in the story. Almost the end. And we don't even know what he looks like.

So it's clearly sure that somethin' gonna happen about this subject.

He honestly didn't need to hide this caracter, if there wasn't any secret around it of cousre.

We just know some TINY informations about him. They aren't even complete as info.

I first gonna write my theory, and then my proofs. I think that all for one might be is izuku's dad.

First, we can begin with his name ひさし Hisashi. You probably know that horikoshi likes to hide things in caracters names kanjis.

Hisashi means ''a long time''. There's a very popular japanese expression ''hisashi buri'' that means ''long time no see''. Hisashi's kanjis other meanings are ''live'' ''long time'' ''still'' ''eternal''.

We can say that ''long time no see'' can be for izuku, who haven't saw his father for a long time, but this is too evident.

What about it's reference to afo? All for one is old. He's from the first generation of quirks. He's 100+ years old. Long time ago... All for one existed since a long time ago.

Another information we know about Hisashi Midoriya, is his fire quirk. We don't know how powerful it is, how far he can use it, or even what color is his flames. We don't know anything.

All for one have for sure a lot of quirks, he can surely use one of them as a cover.

I let you know that All for one has once used a fire quirk, in ''All Might Rising'', in a battle against Nana Shimura.

And the last information we canonly know about Hisashi Midoriya, is that he works overseas (reason why he's not with his family).

Guess what?

The first time All for one appeared in the manga, there was this obvious building in the backround.

The Chrysler Building.

In New york.

Yeah buddies, the first time All for one appeared in the story, he was also overseas.

HMMMM. SUSPICIOUS.

A detail, his family name. If we look at Midoriya's kanjis, especially ''midori'', it's means ''green''.

Did you noticed that ''green'' is the caractersitic (caradesign) of izuku AND his mom. Hisashi surly didn't had green hairs. In Japan, it's common that men take their wife's family name. So, I'm sure that ''midoriya'' is inko's real family name.

(This was for people asking why izuku and afo don't have the same last name etc.)

Believe me or not, we already know Hisashi Midoriya, we already saw him in the story. Horikoshi said we were in final arc of bnha. One of the last fight.

It's not really the right moment to introduce a new person, when bnha is going to end.

Horikoshi can't say ''oh yeah and this (random) guy was izuku's dad, voilà."

And there, as a proof, we have this offical tweet:

If you've noticed, they used the term "revealed", it's not the same as introduced. It means that we already know him, he's already intorduced in the story. And that there will be a REVEAL.

(Japan is in fuckin' war right now, man.If you were a father, wouldn't you join your family, give news, call your son who has the duty to save the world? Srsly)

Inko and Hisashi are still married. (10+ year long distance realtion, congratulation). We don't even know if he's aware his son developped a quirk or not.  Izuku didn't mention, even once his dad's name in the WHOLE manga. When his was about to die, he firstly thought about All might, Bakugo or his mom. Isn't that funny?

At waht point of your relationship with your dad, can you ignore him that much?

(Bnha manga chap 97, Inko is talking to someone (probably Hisashi) , go and read it if you want)

I've heard a lot of theory about ''yeah izuku had a quirk but afo/his dad stole it'', and honestly, I think that izuku was really quirkless.

If izuku is really all for one's son, it justifies why he doesn't have a quirk. As a remembering, the children of the first generations has least chances to develop a quirk than the children of the newest generations.

All for one was from the first geenration of quirks.

I can't write a theory about bnha, if I don't talk about STARWARS.

Might sounds funny for you.

If you didn't know, horikoshi is a big fan of starwars and we have a lot of references in the story (places, names, caracters, etc..) Starwars was one of the biggest inspiration for him. There's a lot of interview about that. You can find this information easily.

We can also notice a lot of parallels between bnha and starwars:

•Izuku and Luke are the main caracters.

•All might is Izuku's mantor, Obi Wan is Luke's mantor.

•Grantorino obvioulsy represent Yoda. Izuku and Luke both had an improving arc with the ''wise guy''.

•if someone thinks that All for one don't represent Dark vador, this person is blind.

•Dark vador and afo both have a machine to breathe, their faces are burned, because of a fight against All might/Obi wan (the mantors).

And horikoshi said it himself.

Wouldn't that be the finest homage to Starwars and the best way to wrap up the story, even narratively?

They both like to analyze quirks (and afo is pretty good at it) In the whole manga, there isn't ONE character who has this passion. Except izuku and his lovely dad afo.

(Do you remember the ''save bakugo'' mission? Afo had a quirk to localise people, their weaknesses and strengths. He didn't order Shigaraki to do anything to izuku?)

Anyway, guys, if this really happens, this will the best things And spectacular turn of events ever. There isn't any reason to hide izuku's father identity. Why did horikoshi hide this? Because his dad is someone important.

Don't forgot that Horikoshi is a walking brain, a genius.

If you have something to ad, go on. I didn't write everything, because the theory would go too far.

(Bonus: Hisashi ''long time ago'' can also be a reference to all starwars movies beginning. ''Long time ago, in a galaxy far far away...)

(Just a thought: afo is the one who can use multiple quirks. The manga told us that someone who try to use more than one quirk turn into something like a brainless nomu. Afo being Izuku's dad is maybe the reason why Izuku can use the quirks of all OFA carriers? Yeah that was just thought tho)

Mahou no Chalk-chan

When you think of magical girl creators, chances are think of people who made one or two transcendentally beloved magical girl series over the course of their careers. While these series and their creators are often deserving of the love they receive, there are also those for whom magical girl stories are their bread and butter, but they receive little to no recognition. Between 1972 and 1974, Midori Shimura would bring into the world three different magical girl manga that do not have corresponding anime, and all three of them, as well as Shimura herself, are quite obscure. Today we'll be taking a look at the first of the three, as well as the woman who created it.

Mahou no Chalk-chan (Magical Chalk-chan) is a manga about a girl known as Chalk-chan, so called because of her magical chalk which makes whatever she draws with it come to life. While I haven't been able to nail down specific plot details, it seems Chalk-chan mostly uses her magic to amuse herself. It's also worth noting she has a panda companion named Tantan, though I'm not sure if Tantan can speak or do magic or anything.

By this point it will probably come as no surprise that I have not read this or any Shimura manga in its' entirety, given that they have never been reprinted outside of their magazine runs or translated in any capacity as far as I'm aware.

Mahou no Chalk-chan initially ran in Shogaku Sannensei from the April 1972 issue to the March 1973 issue. It also ran in Shogaku Yonnensei from the April 1973 issue to the July 1973 issue. The series was co-created by Fuyuhiko Akashi, who is credited with the original concept.

Evidently, Akashi is an even more obscure mangaka than Shimura is. The only other work I could find attributed to him is an Ultraman manga titled Ultraman A, which he worked on alongside Shigemitsu Taguchi.

And then there's Midori Shimura herself. The name is a pseudonym, with her real name being Shizue Aramata. Fun fact: her brother, Hiroshi Aramata, is a renowned author, polymath, and scholar. Anyway, under the pen name of Midori Shimura, she got her start in manga as an assistant to Fujiko F. Fujio and allegedly helped inspire them to create Doraemon. She debuted her first manga of her own in 1971, titled Mari no Hi no Youbi. Shimura would go on to pen various manga tie-ins for stuff like Licca-chan and Gamba no Bouken. Almost all of her manga were published in Shogaku magazine at various grade levels, and the majority of her work is shoujo.

Considering Mahou no Chalk-chan was a joint effort between Shimura and Akashi, I can't say for certain how much creative control Shimura had in the project. But fret not, next time we'll be looking at a magical girl manga that was all her.

I literally wrote this on the spot so that’s why it’s all over the place. I did Yorozuya / Shinsengumi and Hoshishiro / Toy GubGun 

Yorozuya and Shinsengumi 

It’s a disaster 

Gintoki and Sougo are being super sadists only it’s worse because they keep fueling each other 

Sougo and Kagura won’t stop arguing 

Kagura just keeps trying to fling boogers at everyone that pisses her off 

Gintoki and Hijikata at each other’s throats but what else is new 

If Gintoki and Kagura aren’t tag teaming the Shinsengumi with insults, then they’re arguing with each other 

Sougo has tried to light Hijikata on fire at least 5 times 

Shinpachi and Kondo are trying to be the responsible ones and calm everyone down 

All is lost once Kondo makes a comment about Otae that’s he shouldn’t have 

At some point Kondo ends up sulking on the other side of the room because the gorilla jokes just WON’T STOP 

Kagura ends up stealing Shinpachi’s glasses so he can’t see to play anymore 

Gintoki just keeps sinning as usual 

It’s amazing that the vein in Hijikata’s forehead hasn’t exploded yet 

Queue Katsura appearing out of nowhere 

“It’s not *insert card phrase here* It’s Katsura!”

“KAATSUURAAAAA!!!!” Hijikata yells as he gets up to chase after Zura while stepping on all the cards 

“Oi oi oi! Watch where you’re stepping!” Gin-chan says right before getting kicked in face 

Sougo pulls his canon out of thin air and chases after Hijikata and Katsura 

The entire apartment is destroyed and so is probably half of Kabuki-cho

Hoshishiro and Toy GunGun 

Midori somehow managed to win every single round, unless he’s the judge that round 

He basically just harassed Masamune and makes really sadistic comments that makes everyone in the room a little uncomfortable 

Fujimoto ranges between trying to be really supportive of everyone and getting competence at random moments 

Asks Midori to pet him when he draws a good card 

Ichi doesn’t say much unless she’s making fun of Fujimoto or defending Midori 

She often glances over at Midori and blushes 

Similarly to Ichi, Haruka rarely says a word 

However, he does sit a little too close to Haruki and gets into some arguments because he thinks Haruki should win every round 

Haruki ends up being annoyed half the game and gets into several pointless arguments with Yuki 

Won’t pick a card if he thinks it’s too mean 

Yuki makes literally everything sound perverted 

Also makes everyone in the room uncomfortable. Even Midori 

Tachibana doesn’t understand half of the cards but she ends up getting really competitive anyway 

I mean she goes full demon mode

She’s out for blood 

Please calm down it’s just a card game 

Masamune is determined to beat Midori at least once 

He desperately tries to calm Tachibana down 

He’s also the target of all Yuki’s inappropriate comments 

He questions why he ever thought this would be a good idea

Well, here’s my disjointed thoughts that I’ve had abt this AU for the past few months:

But here’s a minor change:

One For All can’t speak normally. Anytime they try, it just comes out with that layered effect to it

To remedy this, they just… don’t speak.

They use their combined intelligence (aka the 3 brain cells all 8 of them share) to use the JSL they picked up over the years

Speaking of, out of all the people in UA, only Bakugo and All Might have heard his voice

And now, the thoughts!:

Y’know that one meme that’s like “wow, I’m getting a good grade in therapy, which is something normal to want and possible to achieve”? That’s OFA when they act like a Normal Teen™

The rest of the class knows that something’s up with OFA, but they just aren’t sure what yet

Uraraka started a betting pool on whether or not OFA’s a minor god, a demon, an eldritch horror, or (as posited by Todoroki) awkward because his dad’s one of his teachers

Koda and OFA have JSL conversations together

Also, Dark Shadow feels drawn to OFA, and won’t stop nagging Tokoyami to befriend them

OFA is very adamant about not being called Deku, and instead they have a different nickname (I’m between either just “Midori”, or “D’Art”)

When Aizawa uses his quirk on OFA, they fall to the ground and stop moving

He’s only done it once.

Yoichi INSISTED that izuku bought old pre-quirk video games for his successors to play (& so he can live a kind of childhood but shhh-)

Speaking of: Vestige reactions to being alive again!:

At first, they were a lil disoriented at being back in a body, much less one shared body, but over time, they’ve turned it around to a strength

Yoichi is the definition of “Angst? What Angst?”

He very much loves being in the body of a teenager (and being as far away from his big bro as possible), but when he finds out his brother’s still alive he gets incredibly scared.

These emotions eventually boil over after the summer training camp, and his successors all comfort him

Second and third (once again) don’t like modern hero culture, and initially refuse to participate.

Second is a lil offended that Izuku would construe him for Bakugo, and that’s his main reasoning for disliking Izuku at the beginning

Third is leagues more reasonable: he doesn’t hate Izuku, just hero society.

He & izuku get along pretty well, actually

Hikage thinks his comrades are annoying, but they’ve grown on him somewhat.

Daigoro LOVES the fact that he’s in a teenage body now, and will be as much of a lil shit as being mute allows

En is ambivalent.

Nana…feels complicated emotions. Technically she’s the “youngest” of the dead people, and she has strong ties to her life before, but at the same time, she’s no longer Nana Shimura, she’s One For All, playing the part of Izuku Midoriya

It’s the same with Izuku. He basically had his life and bodily autonomy stripped away from him, forced to be “headmates” with 7 ghosts, and he can’t even tell anyone about it

On the other hand, even through all of that, he’s glad he met the vestiges, and he hopes one day that he can tell his classmates about his…strange condition

They don’t know that Shigaraki is Kotaro’s son until after the Kamino fight

Nana’s hero name was Skywalker

Even More Lesbian Manga About Adults Before My Holiday Creative Energies Wither Away

It’s easily been Floating Catacombs’ most successful year, with far more posts that I’m proud of than previous times. With that, I’d like to round out the year with something of a tradition on this blog: sharing some yuri manga featuring adults, because I will never get tired of emotionally compromised women working things out.

Crescent Moon and Donuts

An office lady who’s constantly stressed out about not being normal enough falls into an anxiety spiral only to be consoled by her coworker, who it turns out is just as trashbrained, but in slightly different ways so they’re able to strengthen each other. Crescent Moon and Donuts is a surprisingly good meditation on anxiety and feeling like a fuckup, and trying to navigate these feelings between family, work, and romantic partners. As someone with self-doubt almost as bad as these ladies, who both strengthens and is strengthened by her partner with her own slew of struggles, I really felt this one.

Runaway Girl

Runaway Girl walks the tightrope line between cutesy and devastatingly messy. Now a working adult, Maki has a chance encounter with her old high school sorta-girlfriend Midori. While Maki’s still a pent-up lesbian, Midori got knocked up and is planning a shotgun wedding with her deadbeat fiancée. What follows is a lot of unraveling of compulsory heterosexuality, with Midori eventually realizing that her situation is abusive and trying to find the resolve to change her situation. It’s the love and support from the women in her life that finally reaches her. This manga has some heavy subject matter, but it’s dealt with using a certain level of fluffiness that keeps it from being outright depressing. Concluded with 4 volumes, this one is a quick but strong read.

Even Though We’re Adults

Ah, Takako Shimura. I don’t have many thoughts on Aoi Hana, but Wandering Son is deeply vivid and cruel in a way that caused me to read the entire second half in a single afternoon and left me in a trans haze. She can weave truly messy webs of character dynamics, but her stories aren’t without unreasonable moments. So with some caution, I caught up on the scanlated chapters of her newest work. Even Though We’re Adults is pretty much Runaway Girl but on a higher difficulty setting. A woman has a sloppy hookup with her bartender, only for the bartender to discover afterwards that she’s married to a man. The hard part is that the husband isn’t a blatantly awful person like in Runaway Girl – when he finds out that his wife has been cheating with another woman, he’s confused and concerned first and foremost. The worst part is that this bartender has been betrayed time and time again by dating women who turned out to be married, but she can’t ignore this one for horny and lonely reasons.

In the last chapters the scanlations got to, the husband decides to move with his wife back into his family’s house, and you can already imagine the in-law tension that begins boiling there. Even Though We’re Adults will probably turn out to be a messy bisexual family drama instead of a decidedly lesbian break like Runaway Girl. But what I read of it was interesting, and with an official translation on the way, we’ll see if Takako Shimura’s still got it.

I need gay women in my life to survive. I’m glad manga increasingly has me covered, with more of these genuinely interesting LGBT+ series coming out every year.

My Ai Yazawa Reccomendation List

This is a list that I’ve actually been thinking about for a while now (like... years lmao). Basically just a few of my personal recommendations of series (only manga and webtoons this time around but I have a couple tv shows and anime that I also might rec in a second list if people like this one...) that people like me that are missing Yazawa’s work might enjoy.  The bulk of this list is for NANA, because that is her unfinished work, but I’ve got quite a few recs for her other series.

I don’t love all the series on this list (or even like tbh), but I can see where someone who likes a certain aspect of Yazawa’s work might enjoy the series more than me.   I didn’t include trigger warnings because it’s been a number of years since I read some of these series (and some I never finished) but feel free to ask me and I’ll do my best.

Obligatory recommendation that if you enjoy any of Yazawa’s series, you should give any of her series a try.  I think all of the series that  I’ve read by her are masterpieces in their own right and if you’re missing NANA (or any of her other works) you should definitely read the rest of her work because many of my own favorite aspects of Yazawa’s works are present in all of her work - like female friendship and continuous story lines (rather than episodic).

If you like the past/future mechanic of NANA with young adult characters and enjoy unveiling the mystery in Kagen no Tsuki  then give Piece by Ashihara Hinako a try.  The MC and her best friend have a good passing resemblance to Nana and Hachi, if Hachi were chubby but they have more than appearance in common with NANA’s leading ladies...  To say any more would be spoilers!  This series also marries some of the messy melodrama of RL with realism like NANA.

Summary: One day, Mizuho, a university student, receives news that her classmate in high school, Origuchi Haruka, passed away. Mizuho doesn't remember being best friends with Origuchi, but apparently, Origuchi told her mother that Mizuho was her best friend. And now, her mother wants Mizuho to help her find the boy Origuchi dated during high school. Mizuho told Origuchi's mother that Origuchi was a very plain girl, and she was never seen with a guy, but her mother told Mizuho that Origuchi got pregnant and had an abortion when she was in high school. Mizuho was shocked, but she still starts asking her other classmates in high school and following the traces Origuchi left behind.

Status: Complete

If you liked Paradise Kiss for the portrayal of a bunch of odd-balls coming together to do something creative together and inspiring Yukari with their passion OR for Yukari’s struggle with her mother academic expectations then you might enjoy the webtoon Spirit Fingers by Han Kyoung Chal!

Summary:  What do you do if you're going on 18, totally awkward and lacking in self- confidence? You could just sit in your room all day and all night and study and wonder why you never get asked out…OR, if you’re Amy Song you could join up with the Spirit Fingers – the strangest, hippest, coolest (yet most welcoming) art club ever. But as Amy is about to learn, discovering your TRUE colors is about more than just painting.

Status: Complete, still being translated.  Best part is you can start reading the series completely LEGALLY here.  They changed the character’s first names to more western ones and it’s a bit behind the unofficial translations but I still recommend reading it legally.

If you liked NANA because you liked how the Nanas had the same name and had all these other similarities, meeting under fateful circumstances but also wish they’d date then give Lonely Wolf, Lonely Sheep a try by Fuka Mizutani!

Summary:   Two women with the same name happens to meet each other when they're at the same hospital for the same injury. They want to become closer, but both must overcome their insecurities and self-loathing first.

Status: Complete

If you like the past/future telling aspect of NANA with a large, fully-fleshed cast of characters who are all living their life check out Cheese in the Trap by Soonkki.  Sul is a very strong, no- nonsense MC but with plenty of charm with great friends.  Like NANA it’s easy to hate some of the more flawed characters but at the end of the day even the antagonists have complex reasons for being the way they are and aren’t just living to be an opposing force.

Summary:  Seol Hong is a hard-working student, who has returned to college after a long break. Jung Yu is a senior at the college known as Mr. Perfect. Seol feels like her life took a turn for the worse since she got involved with Jung. Is Jung intentionally turning Seol's life?

Status:  Ongoing... I think?  You can read the webtoon legally [here] and the translations are being posted weekly still at least.

Do you like younger looking characters like Mikako and Miwako?  Do you like playboys like George as a male lead but wish he were a bit more earnest?  Did you like how Akira and Midori took their time getting to know and understand each other by the end of the series?  Do you just like how Yazawa emphasizes friendship in her work?  Here’s Lovely Everywhere by Ke Li for you.

Summary: Tong Danwei is a high school freshman with romantic dreams about the boy she is fated to meet. While on the way home from picking up groceries, she runs into a pretty boy, and that’s where our story begins. Will she find love in high school? And more importantly, will any boy be able to overlook the fact that although she is in high school, she still looks like an elementary student?? Follow along on Tong Danwei’s adventure of love and high school angst, with plenty of comedy thrown in to the mix.

If you like the supernatural mystery aspect of Kagen no Tsuki starring younger characters with mysteriously dead-but-not-dead characters, then Route 225 might by a good series to try.  It’s by Shimura Takako & Fujino Chiya (Original Story).  You might know Shimura Takako from her other series like Wandering Son and Sweet Blue Flower, so you know she is great portraying emotional realism like Yazawa.

Summary: 14-year-old Eriko finds herself left in charge of her younger brother Daigo when their parents suddenly disappear one warm summer evening. Trapped in a world that is very much like their own save for the lack of their parents, Eriko and Daigo find themselves desperate for the return of the worrywart mother and apathetic father they never thought they'd miss so badly...

Status: Complete

If you liked NANA because you liked reading about a pair of women who are very different and yet are very good friends to the point where their friendship is more important to them than romantic relationships (even if they struggle to properly communicate this to each other) then try the short series Tomodachi no Hanashi by Kawahara Kazune (Story) and Yamakawa Aiji (Art).

Summary:  Eiko is something like a plain Jane and a doormat, while her best friend Moe is a head-turning beauty. Despite their differences, their friendship is as strong as ever.    Guys are always asking Moe out, but her answer is inevitable, "only if you promise to put Eiko before me."

Did you like how Hachi from NANA kept losing her jobs?  And had no luck in love?  Do you prefer to read about young adult characters?  Even though we never talk about how funny Yazawa’s work is... was that something you really liked about her work? Dame na Watashi ni Koishite Kudasai by Nakahara Aya!  Hachi and Shibata aren’t exactly alike but they are both fun to read and get into the mindset of in a similar way.

Summary:   The unemployed Shibata Michiko is betting everything she has on her romance with a younger man—literally. In order to keep him happy, she deprives herself of the things she wants and buys him expensive clothing and accessories. Since she's flat out broke, she needs to find a job before she starves to death and loses her young love interest. However, Michiko discovers that the boy was never interested in her romantically. Depressed at being dumped and after a series of unsuccessful interviews, she bumps into Kurosawa—an intimidating former boss she used to dislike.

Status: Complete, with a spin-off

If you’re interested in exploring Mikako’s feelings from Gokingo Monogatari when she dropped out of school then Cat Street might interest you.  Both MCs find themselves a group of friends and attend alternative high schools - though while Mikako’s is an art’s school, in Cat Street is more of a free school that seems to specialize in drop-outs and the like.

Summary:  The story centers around Keito Aoyama, a former famous child actress. Due to a childhood incident, she retired from her career early and withdrew from normal society. Now 16, she passes her days in boredom and without purpose. But one day she runs into a stranger who takes her to El Liston--a free school for high school students like herself, who don't have a place where they belong. Though hesitant at first, Keito decides to enter El Liston and subsequently, she begins a new stage in her life. With the help of her only remaining childhood friend, Taiyou, and her new classmates Rei, Momiji, and Kouichi, Keito slowly finds the courage to open up to others and to accept their support. Will Keito return to acting? Will she find true friends? Love?

If you want a series like NANA that is about adult women who are good friends and roommates as they balance their life with their career, love-lives, and friendship with each other try Tokyo Alice by Toriko Chiya.  Alternatively, if you were wondering what Hachi might look like if you reversed her obsession with love with her love of shopping... you’ve got Tokyo Alice’s MC (lol)

Summary:   Fu Arisugawa is a little worried there might be something wrong with her. She loves shopping above all else, using her money to buy designer and brand-name items to the exclusion of all else. But while her friends also enjoy shopping, they're all also on the hunt for love in one way or another – something that Fu finds she just isn't all that interested in. When her boss starts showing interest in her, will Fu figure it out? Or is she going to keep going in her shopping wonderland?

Status: Complete, also has a recent drama that you can watch with Prime TV!

If what interested you most about NANA was it’s portrayal of the music industry of a new band and wanted more of that then try Beck by Sakuishi Harold.  Beck, like NANA, has an anime that while it doesn’t cover the entire series is worth watching or even having the soundtrack on as you read the series.

Summary:  Fourteen-year-old Yukio "Koyuki" Tanaka is a dispirited young boy with no goals in life. However, this all changes when Koyuki saves a strange-looking dog named Beck from being harassed by a group of local kids. The dog's owner, 16-year-old Ryuusuke "Ray" Minami, is an emerging guitarist and the former member of a popular rock band. After Koyuki meets Ray again in a diner, the older boy leads him to his former band's meeting place and dazzles Koyuki with his amazing guitar skills. Slowly becoming interested in the glamour of western rock culture, Koyuki decides to start playing the guitar while helping Ray achieve his dream of leading the ultimate rock band. Together with Ray's younger sister Maho and a few other members, the two boys launch their career into the world of rock by forming a band called BECK. Beck follows the group's struggles and successes as they spread their fame across Japan.

If you like how Yazawa writes her female “rival” characters as sympathetic and likable (even if not everything they do is likable) then you might enjoy Koda Momoko’s Heroine Shikkaku.  It’s about a girl who is shocked when she discovers she’s more like the bitchy villainess who bullies the sweet and pure heroine in shojo manga.

Summary:  This could be any girl. Imagine being a heroine of a love story. Hatori also believed that one day she would get married to her childhood friend, Rita. But that's not how the world works! This is a hilarious comedy that honestly paints a painful unrequited love story of this young girl!

Status: Complete

If you want a short read like NANA, with two very different girls with the same name who tie their futures together then read the one-shot  Watashi to Watashi by Sahara Mizu.  Note that I’m only suggesting you read this specific one-shot, not any of the other one-shots contained in the collection this one is in... Actually I very much insist you don’t read the first one.  I highly recommend reading others’ of Sahara Mizu’s work if you enjoy this one because even if none of them are directly similar to any of Yazawa’s... the emotional complexity is.

Summary:   Two girls with the same name; one beautiful and athletic, the other awkward and shunned. But who’s the lucky one?

If you like a series having 2 characters named Nana in NANA (even if their relationship with each other is... entirely different) and enjoy the format of Nana and Hachi continuing to address each other in inner monologues in the future where they haven’t seen each other for years or you just like messy, realistic relationships try We Were There by Obata Yuuki.

Summary:  The start of high school life. To the girls, that also meant the start of their love lives. For brand new first year student, Takahashi Nanami (Nana for short), it was no different... She happens to end up in the same class as the incredibly popular Yano Motoharu, who rumors say that two thirds of all the girls are guaranteed to fall in love with. But will that hold true for Nana, who says that if she had to choose between like or dislike, she'd say she dislikes him!?

What was your favorite thing about Tenshi Nanka Ja Nai?  Was it Akira struggling with his feelings for someone that married into his family?  Was it Midori and Mamirin’s friendship?  Try Omoi, Omoware, Furi, Furare by Sakisaka Io.  (Strobe Edge also by Sakisaka might also work for you).

Summary:  The story centers around Yuna and Akari who have two very different views of love: Yuna is someone who sees love as a dream and Akari is someone who is very realistic about her romance choices. Meanwhile, there are two boys, Kazuomi and Rio, who also have different views of love: Kazuomi's an airhead and doesn't understand the concept of love, while Rio grabs the opportunity when confessed to as long as the girl looks cute.

If you just like Yazawa’s work and want to read works by a close friend of hers...  Yoshizumi Wataru!  You might know her best from Marmalade Boy, but she also worked on quite a few josei works about young adults... Like Cappuccino (if you like moving on from a first serious relationship as we saw with Hachi and Shouji), but also Cherish and Spicy Pink.

Mahou no Enzeru-chan

Today we're looking at the second of the three Midori Shimura magical girl manga I'll be covering on this blog. For information about Midori Shimura herself, as well as her first magical girl manga and what all three of them have in common, please see this post.

The first chapter of Mahou no Enzeru-chan was published in the March 1973 issue of Shogaku Ninensei. After that the manga was published in Shogaku Sannensei from the April 1973 issue to the March 1974 issue. Despite running for just a hair over one year across two magazines, the online presence for this manga is quite low. So low in fact that I have not been able to track down any plot summaries, meaning all I have to go on is what few scans and photos I could find of the manga itself. And uh...

Yeah, I have almost no idea what Mahou no Enzeru-chan is about. It seems like Enzeru-chan has a human bestie, a pair of animal sidekicks, and a penchant for causing mischief, all of which were becoming increasingly common in the early magical girl genre at that time. Her hair decoration resembles a crown, which makes me wonder if she's royalty of some sort. As well, the name Enzeru is very similar to the loanword enjeru, from the English word angel as opposed to the more traditional Japanese word for angel, which is tenshi. Is she actually an angel? I don't know.

Here's the part that really throws me for a loop: I wouldn't expect a manga with such a low profile to have merch, and yet a number of Mahou no Enzeru-chan pins were made, presumably as furoku. Trying to research this series turned up more auctions for these than anything about the manga itself. Make of that what you will.

Given that this was the first magical girl series Midori Shimura created solo, it's a real shame I wasn't able to find more information about it. This, more than just about anything else I've covered on this blog, I really hope turns up at some point, even if only in the form of more scraps to examine.
