Note
Worst villains you've seen in webcomics?
It's surprisingly tough for me despite bad webcomic generally having bad characters.
For me it's not tough. Every villain I've tackled in this blog is either too likable to be a villain, too pathetic to be a villain, or just a generic villain who isn't interesting or cool in any way due to lack of a proper motivation. There really isn't a villain you love to hate or you feel enriches the story in any way, with very few exceptions.
Here is my Top 5 Worst Villains Ever
5. The Hosts (Gene Catlow)
Tumblr media
I could've included various one-off villains like Horton or Evil Staggler here, but I feel like Hosts deserve this spot, because they were a clever and unique idea whose execution was completely and utterly botched. These invisible entities who eat the lifeforce of living creatures, especially cats due to their status in Gene Catlow World would've been absolutely terrifying, but they ended up becoming jokes. They ultimately didn't end up affecting the plot in any way, besides Horton killing them and resurrecting them as asskissers. The Hosts really should have been the main threat of the comic due to their nature, because they don't eat creatures for fun, but rather their own survival, and they should've also served as a reason for Gene and Matt to put their differences aside in order to fight them, but, they're all gone now.
4. The Infernomancer (Dominic Deegan)
Tumblr media
I feel like The Infernomancer isn't a character. He is more like a plot device. When conflict, gore and death is needed, Infernomancer isn't too far behind. Outside of wanting to hunt down Miranda because Karnak demanded it, he doesn't have motives, any character, any backstory. He just wants to kill for the sake of killing, because this story needs an eldritch horror, when arguably, THE ENTIRE CONCEPT OF MAGIC IN THIS UNIVERSE ALREADY IS ONE. Remember, magic is established to do random shit because it's magic, and just about anybody can learn it, and only few are just completely immune to it. Maybe The Infernomancer is an allegory for the dark side of magic which is why he doesn't have name either, but we have enough bad magicians in this comic already. He's just a generic edgelord in a comic full of edgelords, except this edgelord is powerful and keeps cheating death oooh so spooky! It's like Batman Who Laughs but even worse.
3. Trasik (Alien Dice)
Tumblr media
As bland as Infernomancer is, Trasik is probably even worse. I guess I am only ranking her so low because she could've had potential to be a good antagonist but somehow Tiffany fucked up EVERYTHING about her. She is a mysterious woman who also happens to be the sister of Riley, and for whatever reason she wants to hunt Lexx down. We later learn her intense hatred of Lexx is because her father, Kade, was close friends with Lexx's mother, and this led to Trasik just deciding to become racist against rishans. However over the years she has somehow gained a child soldier ring that she actively runs, and also Lexx's mother and grandmother live in secrecy RIGHT NEXT DOOR from her and she somehow has never known this. And if that wasn't enough, she was replaced with a mimic by ADC at some point after they kidnapped Chel, because she didn't attend a wedding. Trasik's entire existence is a gigantic mess, and we don't know why she does the things she does, and if she is even real, and worse than that Riley and other siblings have no issue with her doing these corrupted things. More than anything Trasik should've served as Riley's puppet who took the blame for his shady acts, but this is not about "characters who should have been villains".
2. Dr. Demikhov (Spinnerette)
Tumblr media
Spinnerette is horrible at creating political strawmen, not because they're strawmen but because they're not even good strawmen. General Generic is actually a surprisingly reasonable authority figure and thus loops back to being likable. However one character I feel is a waste of time is Dr. Demikhov. Demikhov is the Anti-Universe, he is a proud communist who is somehow in high position at the Russian Federation. However he doesn't really do anything communistic, he just speaks in technobabble with occassional communist word, and this triggers the shit out of Universe. He is also a moron who merged his two assistants together because he wanted to prove something. Spinny has had a lot of bad villains, but even ones like WereQuakko Sisters were entertaining enough because of their fucking ridiculous concepts, Demikhov is a blank slate. He really should've been an oligarch-funded scientist who only uses communist jargon to draw the interest of young people like Manya Sisters, when in actuality all of his science is loyal to the world view of Putin. Having a scientist paid by the state to control their narrative would make him a proper opposite to anti-authoritarian Universe and also would make this arc less of a waste of time. At least he's implied to have straight up died, so we'll likely never see him again.
1. Matt (Gene Catlow)
Tumblr media
Yes, Matt is the worst villain in the history of Goddamnwebcomics. But that's not his fault, it's the fault of his surroundings. Due to how every character seems to always read his mind and always seems to judge him as an asshole despite the fact he has more realistic view of the world and he respects his peers, Matt comes across like an underdog. He also has been stripped off his powers and constantly backstabbed, whether it's his former lovers, the puppet he created, his tech support and even his bosses and mentor. Not even his girlfriend is loyal to him as she's more interested in creating the Dog Holocaust than actually make his vision of a cat-ruled world come true, which is implied to be inevitable. Anyone trying to step into Matt's shoes usually fucks up, like how Tane destroyed the family power, and rather than spend all his days hating Gene, he is willing to work with his enemies in exchange of a better life for them, because he knows World of Friends is dangerous. Matt is perfect in every single way as a character, so in order to make him a better villain, everything AROUND him needs to be improved first!

The Spirit Of The Warrior Signature Is Found In The Men Who Bleed Crimson And Cream Shirt
As Rugby Union starts to gather a bit of The Spirit Of The Warrior Signature Is Found In The Men Who Bleed Crimson And Cream Shirt in the US, some professional players from the rest of the world are beginning to come into it. One of the highest profile signings so far is probably Ben Foden, who has 34 appearances for England to his name. Ben has signed for Rugby United New York for the 2019 season. If club rugby gains a foothold in the USA, it may start to see American Football players, particularly those who play for their college but aren’t drafted to the NFL switching sports, as there is no real opportunity to play to a high standard and be paid after college outside the NFL that I’m aware of.

On Social Media
You may have noticed that some parts of yesterday’s blog post made it to other social networks, primarily LinkedIn. I did post a little to Twitter yesterday, but mostly personal stuff and not business-related. I’m having a bit of a clarifying moment when it comes to social media lately that I want to dig into a bit more. LinkedIn doesn’t suffer from this malady because of its nature, but depending on its members' ability to police themselves, it may only be a matter of time. This malady I refer to is the weaponization of social media and the appropriation of content.
Clearly, the whole point behind social media is engagement, but I don’t think any of us anticipated what has happened in the last 4 to 5 years. In retrospect, we should have. If you lived through the age of shock or conservative talk radio, you might have an inkling of what I mean. Someone says something outrageous, and it’s an almost Pavlovian response. We MUST engage. The part I don’t think we could have predicted was social media promoting the outrageousness to the degree they did. Social media might recognize the part they played in this mess one day, but I have a hard time continuing to participate in something designed to promote Shock's Culture for the sake of likes and dollars.
LinkedIn feels different somehow. Yes, it’s a social network, but it is populated by people who have a vested interest in maintaining a professional appearance. I’ve seen many times when someone tries to lob a metaphorical Molotov Cocktail into the mix, and someone says, “That’s not appropriate for this space.” I hope that means that legitimate content is King there, and the engagement follows as a result of the substance of that content, not on the controversy. For now, I’ll put my focus there and see how it goes.
The other issue I mentioned is the appropriation of content, and that’s discussed on next Wednesday’s show.
Just…stop already
A note totally unrelated to anything: Politicians can stop sending me emails now. You’re approaching “We can help you with your extended auto warranty” territory.
Rebundling The News
The great Dave Winer:
The news industry product needs to be re-bundled. I believe the rewards will be huge for the first publication that bets on this idea. They wouldn't be the first, btw -- My.Yahoo did it in the 00's. Have the guts to point to your competition. And if you have a paywall, send them some money and some readers. Now that Jeff Bezos is retired, and owns such a platform, I would stand up and applaud if they had the guts to try this out. I'd also line up to hook my blog into such a network. Not because my writing depends on making money from it, it doesn't, but to help disrupt the news industry that's daydreaming itself to death over distribution, competition and economics.
What I wouldn’t give to be able to subscribe to one feed with what I’ll call an “a la carte” option of news and editorial options. That was one of the great things about RSS Readers at the outset, but content is increasingly siloed or anything more than an excerpt is behind a paywall. I’ve learned never to click on an LA Times Article Link for example, because I know I will never see the story, I’ll get a splash page instead. Same with WaPo. Would I pay some money for the a la carte option I just mentioned? Possibly. Would you?
Some Links Of Interest…
From the Beeb:
Ms Khing, an aerobics teacher, posted her exercise video to Facebook on Monday morning.
At the time, Myanmar's army was in the process of a military coup, detaining Aung San Suu Kyi and other democratically elected leaders from her party.
I don’t think you could be blamed if you were reminded of Baghdad Bob watching this.
Matthew at SLR Lounge is never buying another Sandisk SD Card:
Unfortunately, I’m done buying Sandisk SD cards. and I think you can see why. They seem to be more flimsy than any other memory card (make or model) I have ever had. Inevitably, they split open and spill their memory chip guts.
After looking at these pictures and my stash of Sandisk Memory Cards, I don’t have what you would call a Peaceful Easy Feeling about this. I have more than a few of these, and while I don’t put them through the paces, a professional photographer does, I would like to know they’re gonna hold up. It doesn’t look good, I’ll tell you that much.
From The Verge, Casey Newton talks about Clubhouse’s ‘South By Moment’:
The only social-networking moment I can compare it to in recent years would be the 2015 South by Southwest festival, when the streets of Austin were briefly overrun by people broadcasting themselves on Meerkat. Then, as now, the once-stable field of social networks hummed with a fresh sense of possibility.
I have an account at Clubhouse, which as of right now, lies dormant. I have a habit of opening accounts at different apps with my preferred handle so that no one else takes it and gets a taste of the app before passing judgment (Yes, including THAT one). Newton calls Clubhouse the ‘Medium of Podcasts’ in that it appears to democratize audio in a way that Anchor didn’t, and the experience is as clean and ‘radiant’ as Medium. I agree. I’ll be interested to see how the app is used as time goes on. The funny thing about democratizing media is that everybody is ‘the media.’ The downside to that is that everyone—including me—is ‘the media.’ Open source guys will love it. Matt Deegan over at Matt on Audio might be a bit skeptical…
At it’s worst, I’d say the content is basically the annoying self-promoters from LinkedIn given a microphone to talk to their echo-chamber. At it’s best you can say it’s a place for like-minded people to get together and have a discussion in a screen’s-off environment.
Matt seems to think this might lend itself to more of a panel or conference vibe, and I can see it. The trouble with that is I also see the self-appointed ‘gurus’ and marketers taking it over much like they’ve tried to do with podcasting the second they see money in it. (Rule One: Marketers. Ruin. Everything)

How the Saving Private Ryan Cast Launched a New Generation of Stars
https://ift.tt/3azDVUj
This article contains spoilers for Saving Private Ryan.
Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan (1998) is known for a number of things: the gut-wrenching, visceral terror of its battle scenes (especially the opening landing at Omaha Beach), the shocking way in which bodies are torn to pieces during the course of those battles, the attention to period detail, and a powerful performance by Tom Hanks that rates as one of his finest.
But one thing that the film may not be as widely recognized for is the lineup of young actors who played members of Capt. John Miller’s (Hanks) squad, or soldiers they met along the way as they searched throughout Normandy for the missing Pvt. James Francis Ryan. From Matt Damon to Vin Diesel, Spielberg recruited relatively new faces who were all, in one way or another, either launching their careers outright or just starting to make their mark on Hollywood.
Saving Private Ryan is now considered one of the greatest war movies of all time. Part of that is due to its incredible realism, part of that is due to the skilled direction by Spielberg at the top of his game, and no doubt part of it is thanks to the work of its youthful cast. Let’s look back at who those actors were then, and what they went on to accomplish afterward.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
DreamWorks
Matt Damon (Private James Francis Ryan)
Matt Damon was largely unknown until around 1996 when he gained some good critical notices for his role in Courage Under Fire. At the same time, he and childhood pal Ben Affleck got to finally see their screenplay Good Will Hunting filmed, with Damon in the title role. The movie was in rehearsals in Boston when Steven Spielberg — who was shooting some scenes for Amistad there — stopped by the set to visit with Robin Williams, who introduced Spielberg to Damon. That led to Damon getting the title role in Saving Private Ryan. He’s the young soldier than Tom Hanks and company are trying to find — and who must “earn” his ticket home.
By the time Ryan came out in mid-1998, Damon had gone from unknown to star thanks to the success of Good Will Hunting (which arrived in December 1997), and his and Affleck’s Oscar win for Best Original Screenplay instantly became the stuff of award season legend. Damon has stayed a superstar ever since, starring in the Bourne and Ocean’s Eleven franchises, along with other hits like The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Departed, True Grit, Contagion, The Martian, and Ford vs. Ferrari. Next up for Damon is in Stillwater and reteams with Affleck as co-writers and stars in Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel, both due out later this year.
DreamWorks
Edward Burns (Private Richard Reiben)
Ed Burns had already garnered some attention before landing the role of the feisty, rebellious Pvt. Reiben, one of the few members of Miller’s squad to survive the film. He wrote, produced, directed, and starred in two independent features, The Brothers McMullen and She’s The One, with McMullen in particular earning acclaim and awards (including an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature).
Reiben was Burns’ first role in a major Hollywood production, and he followed that up with parts in films like 15 Minutes (2001), Confidence (2003), Life or Something Like It (2002, and the notoriously bad sci-fi thriller, A Sound of Thunder (2005). He also continued to make his own pictures, including No Looking Back (1998), Ash Wednesday (2002), Newlyweds (2011) and Beneath the Blue Suburban Skies (2019), while also creating, directing and starring in a TV series called Public Morals (2015) that lasted for one season on TNT. Not exactly a household name, Burns has nevertheless remained active and prolific.
DreamWorks
Vin Diesel (Private Adrian Caparzo)
Before being cast as Pvt. Caparzo — the first member of Miller’s squad to die while searching for Ryan — the only credits Vin Diesel had to his name were a short film called Multi-Facial, an uncredited walk-on as an orderly in 1990’s Awakenings, and the tiny 1997 indie release Strays, a semi-autobiographical piece which Diesel wrote, directed, and starred in himself. He was, for all intents and purposes, a complete unknown when he was gunned down by a German sniper in a memorably tragic scene early on in Saving Private Ryan.
Things happened quickly for Diesel after that, as he landed the title voice in The Iron Giant (1999) and launched two franchises back to back: in 2000 he introduced the world to the space criminal Riddick in Pitch Black while 2001 brought the film The Fast and the Furious, not to mention Diesel’s signature character, Dominic Toretto. While his other films since have had varying degrees of success, the Fast and Furious series has turned into one of the biggest box office behemoths of the past decade, with F9 coming this summer. Diesel has also played in the world of comic book movies, voicing Groot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and launching his own superhero film venture with last year’s Bloodshot.
DreamWorks
Paul Giamatti (Sergeant William Hill)
The same sequence that features the death of Vin Diesel’s character also introduces the sardonic, war-weary Sgt. William Hill, played by Paul Giamatti, whose inadvertent collapse of a wall leads to a tense standoff with a hidden group of German soldiers. Before Ryan, Giamatti had bounced around in small film and TV parts for the early part of the ’90s, scoring his breakout role in the 1997 Howard Stern biopic, Private Parts, as radio station program director Kenny “Pig Vomit” Rushton.
After Ryan, Giamatti continued to work steadily and garner more acclaim for outstanding performances in films like Man on the Moon, American Splendor, and Sideways, a movie for which we’re still angry that Giamatti did not receive an Academy Award nomination. He did earn one the following year for his supporting role in Cinderella Man and has continued as one of today’s best working actors in movies like Barney’s Version, Win Win, The Ides of March, 12 Years a Slave, and Private Life, along with his exemplary starring work in TV on John Adams and Billions. He even won an Emmy for playing the United States’ second president.
DreamWorks
Nathan Fillion (Private James Frederick Ryan)
He’s only onscreen for a few minutes, but Nathan Fillion makes a distinct impression as the “wrong” Pvt. Ryan, a soldier with nearly the same name whom Miller and his men come across — only to realize that they have to keep looking. The Canadian-born Fillion first scored some attention in the mid-1990s as Joey Buchanan on the daytime soap One Life to Live (he returned briefly in 2007). Aside from an obscure 1994 film called Strange and Rich, Saving Private Ryan was for all intents and purposes his major motion picture debut.

Saving Private Ryan: The Real History That Inspired the WW2 Movie
By David Crow
Since then, Fillion has worked steadily with his biggest successes coming on TV and in the world of geek culture, where he remains a fan favorite. The Joss Whedon-created sci-fi series Firefly didn’t even last one full season between 2001 and 2002, but has become a cult classic and spawned the movie Serenity (2005). Fillion’s later series, Castle and the currently airing The Rookie, have proven more durable. His other notable film and TV credits include James Gunn’s Slither, Desperate Housewives, Modern Family, Santa Clarita Diet, and Monsters University, while his voice work has also included a recurring role as Green Lantern/Hal Jordan in a number of DC animated films. Next up: more comics-related fun as Floyd Belkin/TDK in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, and the voice of Wonder Man in Hulu and Marvel’s animated M.O.D.O.K.
DreamWorks
Jeremy Davies (Corporal Timothy Upham)
Jeremy Davies is unforgettable as the terrified, cowardly Cpl. Upham, a nerdy translator who is brought on the mission for his linguistic skills and can only stand paralyzed paralyzed with fear as his fellow soldier Mellish is stabbed to death just up a flight of stairs by a Nazi. Like many of his castmates, Davies kicked around in small acting jobs before garnering acclaim in the 1994 black comedy Spanking the Monkey, which also marked the directing debut of David O. Russell.
Saving Private Ryan was his next big attention-getter and cemented his position as one of the more quirky and compelling character actors in film and TV. Following Ryan, Davies worked in films like Ravenous, Solaris, Secretary, and Rescue Dawn, but has also found success on the small screen in series like Lost, Sleepy Hollow, and Justified. He’s also appeared as Dr. John Deegan in the “Elseworlds” arc of the Arrowverse shows The Flash, Supergirl, and Arrow. We’ll see him next in Scott Derrickson’s The Black Phone, based on a story by Joe Hill.
DreamWorks
Giovanni Ribisi (Medic Irwin Wade)
Acting since he was a young child, Giovanni Ribisi already had a substantial career under his belt before playing the doomed medic Wade in Spielberg’s powerful war epic. He had recurring roles in the late 1980s and early 1990s on shows like My Two Dads and The Wonder Years while guesting on a number of other series as well. In the latter half of the ‘90s, he landed parts in movies like That Thing You Do!, Lost Highway, and The Postman, with Ryan easily his highest-profile big screen effort during that time.
After that, Ribisi continued to do character work in movies like Gone in 60 Seconds, Lost in Translation, Cold Mountain, and Public Enemies, before landing the part of the villainous corporate stooge Parker Selfridge in James Cameron’s massively successful and creatively groundbreaking Avatar (2009). He’ll return in Cameron’s upcoming Avatar sequels and has kept busy on the big and small screens, most recently finishing up a three-season run in the title role of the Amazon series Sneaky Pete (fun fact: Sneaky Pete was co-created by Bryan Cranston, who also has a small role in Ryan as one-armed War Department Col. Bryce).
DreamWorks
Barry Pepper (Private Daniel Jackson)
Hailing like Nathan Fillion from Canada, Barry Pepper had just a handful of small credits to his name when he landed the role of the God-fearing but lethal sniper Jackson in Saving Private Ryan. Jackson is perhaps the deadliest weapon in Capt. Miller’s arsenal, although he is eventually killed along with Miller and most of the others during the film’s climactic defense of the bridge in the shattered town of Ramelle.
Pepper probably remains best known for his portrayal of Jackson, but he scored notable roles soon after that in The Green Mile (1999), the TV movie 61* (2001) as baseball legend Roger Maris, and Spike Lee’s 25th Hour (2002). He also appeared in the starring role of 2000’s disastrous Battlefield Earth with John Travolta. Pepper’s recent film work has included roles in The Maze Runner franchise and the sleeper horror hit Crawl (2019).
DreamWorks
Adam Goldberg (Private Stanley Mellish)
“Juden,” says Pvt. Stanley Mellish, pointing to himself and the Jewish Star of David he wears around his neck as a stream of German POWs is marched past him. It’s a small but powerful moment in Saving Private Ryan for the defiant, wisecracking Mellish, who’s there to wipe out as many Nazis as he can. In the movie’s climactic battle, he bravely and viciously fights hand to hand with a German soldier before the latter sinks a knife slowly into his chest in one of the film’s most intensely horrifying moments.
Adam Goldberg had already appeared in a number of notable films before Ryan, including Billy Crystal’s Mr. Saturday Night (Goldberg’s 1992 debut), Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused (1993), John Singleton’s Higher Learning (1995), and the cult horror classic The Prophecy (1995). Mellish remains perhaps his most famed role, but other standouts like A Beautiful Mind (2001), Déjà Vu (2006), and Zodiac (2007) dot his filmography. He’s guested frequently on TV as well and currently has a regular role as Harry Keshegian opposite Queen Latifah on The Equalizer. He’s also directed three features of his own, recorded four albums of his own music, and has exhibited his work as a photographer.

5 Worst Arcs Ever in Goddamnwebcomics History
Arc is a story that is part of a larger story. That is not an official definition but that’s the definition most people accept, so we’ll go with that. And much like in any other form of media, webcomics also have arcs, and the quality of arcs also depend on the quality of webcomic, but sometimes a specific arc can be even worse than the actual webcomic’s average quality.
Here are 5 examples of some of the worst arcs from the webcomics I’ve riffed in this blog. Not all of them are filler arcs. Also, no non-canon arcs, so you won’t find Console Girl beach stories on this list.
5. Evil Staggler Arc - Gene Catlow
Tumblr media
After the first arc of Gene Catlow ended, the comic really struggled to find it’s footing. With Cotton gone, it was time for Gene Catlow to inherit the throne of the protagonist. The end result is a very inconsistent and rushed mess that feels like an afterthought. The story begins with Gene and Catwhis trying to cope with the Sight of the Soul changing their lives, and then Gene learns about his tech master abilities which is pretty important. Then all of a sudden, it turns out there is a group of Evil Ancient Animen or “stagglers” as this blog calls them, who are trying to do...something with Gene and Catwhis’s powers, establishing our couple as important. During this arc, Crendall got a shoddy redemption, Mickey Rooney hung out with a bunch of salamanders that died and then Cotton showed up to do the same thing he did in the first arc but even more rushed. During this arc we never even saw the faces of the villains, as Crendall and Elder Mother showed up to beat them up and then Cotton killed them. This arc was a mess that didn’t have any effect for the rest of the comic besides Crendall’s redemption and Gene and Catwhis becoming the ultimate couple. Hell, even Gene wasn’t quite there yet in terms of his characterization as he was going through same motions as Cotton when he found out about his tech master abilities, resulting in him almost becoming “Geneotton”.
After this arc’s rushed finish, Gene and Catwhis would travel to Friendship Island, and despite seeming to be a simple vacation arc at first, it would actually be the most important arc in this comic’s history as it introduced just about everything that would define this comic’s path for years to come. Matt, Michelle, the concept of World of Friends, Island Entity, The Hosts, Horton and the Sentient Puppets. That arc also helped to give Gene his streetsmart personality back. The longer this comic went on, the more this arc feels like an afterthought.
4. Oh Snap - Dominic Deegan
Tumblr media
The comic that probably has more arcs than any other comic we’ve riffed so far, Dominic Deegan has had some really horrible arcs. Whether they’re plot important or fillery filler, probably the most arrogant one is “Oh Snap” AKA “Dominic’s Mental Breakdown” arc. In this one, bad things keep happening to Deegan, he is kicked out of his job as a professor thanks to the Retard Mob, his favourite comic got an edgy reboot, there is too much evil afoot, all his friends are jerks and then his favourite candy is OUT OF STOCK. Making this arc worse was Nerd Deegan Jr, who was able to predict Deegan’s breakdown and thought his breakdown would unleash Hell on Earth. Then the kids give him a ticket to a world tour not before Deegan learns his breakdown might have been genuinely bad had not Nerd Deegan Jr. interfered. What a horrible fucking arc, the whole thing was a forced attempt to make us feel sympathy for Deegan, when this comic had succeeded at it before without dedicating an entire arc to it.
3. Shopping Arc - Las Lindas
Tumblr media
The Pre-Nonflict Era Las Lindas had it’s own share of large batches where absolutely nothing happens. The peak of this was the shopping arc, where Mora and friends go shopping at the local mall to buy birthday clothes for Sarah. Listen, for some people buying clothes can be fun but you don’t dedicate an entire arc to it. At least Monster Girl Academy’s shopping issue had the underlying “let’s introduce the audience to Hua” angle to it. I can’t recall what the shopping arc of Las Lindas achieved. Wacky hijinks happen, then things get TRAGEDIZED as Mora and Rachel start arguing, and then Miles is a creep to Sarah, and then the arc ends on “hurr best birthday ever”. This arc wouldn’t be out of place in modern Las Lindas, but this happened while this comic was teasing two heated topics, the return of Alejandra and what the Imps were gonna do to Digit.
I know there is a lot of arguing, debating and scaffolding over what constitutes as “a filler arc” in the onlinesphere. All of that could be resolved if you pointed them to this arc. This is the filler to end all fillers, unless you give me 5 developments from this arc that affected the rest of the comic.
2. Crisis on A Bunch of Ohios - Spinnerette
Tumblr media
I genuinely forget sometimes this arc even exists, and maybe that’s for the best. It is a three-parter where Spinny meets other Spinnerettes and overtime they all become aware that they’re all comic characters, as they fight the evil Author.
Although this comic rarely gets referenced nowadays outside of few gags, this comic was pretty much the death of the early, more serialised Spinnerette. After this arc the series became a bunch of one-off issues where sometimes things from earlier chapters would carry into the next, but there is no plot progression, continuity or character development like in the early Spinny issues. They weren’t the best thing ever but it’s hard to compare them to the modern comics, and I say this comic created the split. It is the first arc I ever skipped in this blog’s history. I felt like I was getting nothing out of this fake crossover besides Kraw stroking his ego and his meta self aware wink nod writing which he thinks is so fucking clever. The sad thing is this could have been done better and we saw hints of that with the standalone 70′s Spinnerette origins comic.
1. “Around the World” - Dominic Deegan
Tumblr media
Another thing that was bad about “Oh Snap”, it directly led to this arc. “Around the World” is not a filler arc, because if it was it wouldn’t be on this list. It’s a showcase of different cultures in Dominion, but in actuality it’s a test of strength for Dominic put on by Rilian, who disguised himself as the comedic fat guy. The whole thing is a combination of everything bad about Dominic Deegan, the stupid comedy with some segments of stupid political commentary, pretentious worldbuilding, Siegfried burial and obligatory dragons stuck in between. And the way the whole thing ends on Rilian being the one behind it all, good fucking lord, I still remember my mental breakdown. Honestly you don’t need to read this arc, and if I do riff the whole thing one day, I will not get anything out of it besides anger and gnashing of teeth.
“Around the World” is the worst arc I’ve ever riffed because it achieves nothing and too much at once. It is the protagonist jacking off of “Oh Snap” and the author jacking off of “Crisis on a Bunch of Ohios” combined. This arc is so bad it tainted every other vacation arc in all webcomics.

Okay, I'm beyond excited about Sandman but I can't stop wondering how faithful it's going to be to the comic. It's okay if it has some minor changes (after all, it's the freakin Sandman). But, let's don't forget that it's placed in the DCU, with some DC Characters very relevant to the plot. Is Constantine appearing? Matt Cable? Lucifer and Maze? John Dee/John Deegan/Dr Destiny? At least a little Martian Manhunter cameo?
