I've said it before: I'm not particularly interested in or scared by horror movies. But as an amateur film historian, I feel compelled every October to sample the horror classics and newer movies provided in anticipation of Halloween by movie channels and streaming services, even the high-toned ones like the Criterion Channel. The trouble sometimes is that I'm not in on the jokes provided by the horrormeisters, who love to reference older films in the genre. Several things should have clued me in, starting with the oddly flat-footed title, that The House of the Devil was going to be something of an hommage to earlier films, particularly the opening screen that referred to the wave of “satanic cults” that made news in the 1980s. The deliberately retro look of the opening credits themselves should have alerted me, and when Greta Gerwig showed up with Farrah Fawcett hair I did begin to suspect something was up. Since I didn't watch horror movies in the '70s and ‘80s, I'm not the right audience for Ti West's throwback movie. So all I can say is that it's a well-done tribute to the kind of movies I should have been watching in order to be the right kind of audience. It's nicely paced, if a little slow in spots, setting up the menace lurking in the old dark house, and showing us that Samantha, well acted by Jocelin Donahue, is spunky and resourceful up to a point -- that point being her willingness to go upstairs, something nobody in a horror movie should ever do. And the cataclysmic burst of action at the film's climax is as satisfying as it should be. I even appreciated the coda, with its evocation of a true classic that transcends the genre, Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby (1968). But I have to leave it to horror aficionados to explicate all the references by writer-director-editor Ti West to the period he's honoring, which makes The House of the Devil just a bit of a miss for me.

Hell was the journey (but it brought me heaven)

Chapter 8 - Enchanted

Kara’s editorial public email was a mess, with correspondence from people both in favor and against her coming out. Giving unsolicited advice about her relationship with Lena. Or so her assistant, Caitlyn, had told her.  Cat had been telling her to ignore the entire thing until it blew over, and just focus on the usual, but important work. So, she listened to her boss, did the work she was paid to do, and helped whenever Supergirl was needed, her life continued exactly as before. Except that now, she didn’t hold back when she wanted to kiss Lena, whenever she felt like it, or hold Lena’s hand when they were getting coffee at Noonan’s. They got caught by some paparazzi a few times, leaving the Foundation, and Lena couldn’t quite hide her anger at that fact. Instead she decided to ask Frank to pick them up in the private parking lot, instead of the breezy stroll Kara and Lena had been accustomed to enjoy before Kara’s editor note. Still, they were both determined to not let the public now knowing about their relationship, change how they behaved with each other. They planned on having dinner dates at least once a week, and going out, either alone or with their friends.  Kara continued to fly to Dublin everytime she had a rescue before dawn, to bring Lena the scones she liked so much. Lena filled out her office with flowers the day after the note went to print, and since then she had made sure that Kara gets donuts once a week, just because. Kara personally delivered some plumerias to Lena’s office, a couple of times. One lunch date, Kara picked up the unmistakable sound of a camera shutter, and as much as she discreetly looked, she couldn’t see the paparazzi. “What’s going on?” Lena asked, looking at Kara’s frown. Kara shook her head, and smiled. “Nothing. Are we still on for the bar thing next week?” “I’m curious if Al will ever forgive you for going to another bar…” Lena mocked. Kara laughed again. “He has nothing to worry about, Al’s is home. But, sometimes it is good to have a change of scenery. Also, it comes well recommended by Kate and Ryan.” “What, were they thinking of buying it or what?” “I think The Hold Up is still a Gotham exclusive, but I believe this is the bar Mary used to meet up with Kate when she was still around. Mary said it had Karaoke and I want to see that.” “I am not singing, I’m warning you, Kara Danvers.”

Would you mind talking about THAT PLAY?

I would like to know a bit more.

ALRIGHT THEN! I HAVE ANOTHER POST ON MY DRAFTS ABT MY CHARACTER BUT ALSO I'm gonna talk a bit abt the plot.

Basically it's a retelling of Jekyll and Hyde.

Doctor Jekyll needed a test subject for one of his experiments, and ends up finding a mental patient named Nancy Noonan, who's the main suspect of murder that Hyde committed.

He knows that she's innocent, obviously, so he makes his lawyer Jane Utterson find some way to keep the girl and use her as a test subject (Jane is also my second favorite character btw I love her she's cool). Nancy also has weird abilities that let her see the future and read minds, so she gets taken away to a circus by a weird nurse that like. We don't liek her.

So there's a whole thing, the wife of the man that was murdered doesn't want the girl to be back and she's so pissed that these people are trying to get her back (she's also Jekyll's not so secret lover and she's another one of my favs and I made her dress btw she's so cool and she's played by one of my besties) but she agrees in the end bc science. And like his housekeeper, Mrs Poole, she also fucking hates Nancy bc of course, she's the suspect of a murder and she doesn't want her boss to be associated with that? Which is a very reasonable concern? (Poole was right all along, I'd fight for her)

Also my character. He's the best, and I read the book he's even better there. So, Rick gets contacted by Jane (the lawyer, who's also his cousin and whatnot) to do a whole investigation on Nancy and the nurse to get them back and all that shit. Which he kinda does? But the nurse hates him already so it's not like he can do much. But he does.

There's also this girl called Elizabeth (she's also just a character our director invented but she's played by one of my besties too) who just. Shows up? And she says she's the daughter of one of Jekyll's old friends, which is why he sort of takes pity on her when she says her dad was murdered and allows her to stay (spoiler alert but none of you're gonna see it so it's fine, she's truly not the daughter of that dude, and she killed him and the real Elizabeth) so she stays and no one likes her but she doesn't care.

So, they go to the circus and kinda try to kidnap Nancy back, but she reads Jekyll's mind and they both go insane. (Also holy shit the dude that plays Jekyll/Hyde is the coolest actor in the world and I sang a duet with him????) Which leads to him switching for the most part but not like. Forever.

Act two, bitches!

So there's a whole thing, also one of the characters is literally Mary Shelly (yes, *that one*, the one who's literally one of the most interesting humans to exist? That Mary Shelly), and she's writing everything that happens for a book. So "Elizabeth" goes to her and is all like "ayo Mary, if you could write a version of what happened at the circus where none of the whole going insane and switching thing happens and I save him, that'd be sick. Please?" So Mary's very confused? But Elizabeth convinces her by saying that she js wants to marry him or whatever, so Mary accepts... for some reason. I mean, she literally just wants to write something and she keeps being removed from situations where things could be written, I don't blame her.

Anyhow, while Elizabeth is trying to convince Jekyll that the thing at the circus never happened and that he's fine or whatever, Lady Danvers (the wife of the dude that was murdered) is paying Rick to investigate the whole case. To which obviously, Rick accepts bc he's a detective and that's also literally his best friend who just went insane with no explanation.

So Elizabeth convinces him and all, and then she's just like "ayo Hyde, it'd be fucking awesome if you could just like. Stay like that. That's a cool plan, so just do it." There's a whole thing with those two, like it's *very heavily* implied that they knew about each other's plan for a while.

So, Elizabeth just fires fucking everyone except for Mary and tries to make her whole weird ass plan happen, but Rick and Jane, as well as the weird nurse, find out about her. "Elizabeth's" real name is Gretchen and she worked for the real Elizabeth's family before she killed them all. Rick takes her to jail, Jekyll is fucking not normal again but almost, and then the ending is fucking weird (lovingly, ofc, I love that ending)

This is my really bad summary of that play. I could talk about it in detail, there's a lot I didn't say, but yk. Summaries r hard.

The reforms to improve women’s lives were, however, short-lived. By the mid- to late-1920s, both public and party attitudes towards family policy had become more conservative. In the 1930s, Stalin reversed many of the rights granted to women and families in the 1918 Family Code. Abortion was banned, divorce became extremely difficult to obtain, and the law on the rights of illegitimate children was revoked.

Stalin also closed the Zhenotdel (the party’s Women’s Bureau) in 1930 on the basis that women’s emancipation had been achieved in the Soviet Union and the department was therefore no longer needed. Despite this, throughout the entire history of the Soviet Union, women constituted (on average) only 3–4% of the party’s Central Committee.

The early Communist vision of women’s equality and liberation – where women would be able to work in any profession and communal institutions would take responsibility for childrearing and housekeeping – was never fully realised. As emphasis shifted back towards the traditional family unit in the 1930s, women were faced with the double burden of combining domestic duties with (often strenuous) full-time work.

I'm gonna break everyone's legs!

I'm so so over this whole "Hillary lost because she was that shit!" and I know it's from the National Review and they're goblins from hell, but I mean look at whats going on last night/tonight under a male Democratic President, Democrats are not losing as badly as we feared (and yes that makes me very very happy as well) and it's being treated like Biden personally took Normandy beach on D-day, Hillary did much the same defying of political gravity, running up hill to try to net her party a 3rd term in the White House, a thing thats happened, once since WWII? and into those head winds she netted a popular vote win, and what might be our Latino vote high water mark, only to narrowly narrowly lose 3 states and miss out on the crown.

The only women who will get any kind of decent or accurate appraisal by National Review are the Virgin Mary and likely Margaret Thatcher, with Peggy Noonan running somewhere behind.

50th watch!! And well, the days til Halloween are dwindling down so we'll see how many more watches I have in me before then but I know it's not gonna be as high as last year's. But still a pretty impressive number imo. Anyway, after watching both his movies X and Pearl this year, I felt like checking out more of Ti West's filmography. I think this movie was pretty good. It's a slow burner that is a lot about atmosphere and making you wonder just what is gonna be happening. Ti West does what he can to make you feel like you're transported back decades, even though I personally was feeling more 70's vibes than 80's but hey, I wasn't even remotely alive yet so I won't speak too much on that. lol There's some notable faces in there. We get a one scene cameo from Dee Wallace that feels so random considering she's a certified scream queen but okay. Greta Gerwig as the main character's best friend in a pre-fame role that actually gets a rather (spoiler alert!) abrupt and memorable death scene. I also know Tom Noonan from the tv version of 12 Monkeys so that was exciting. Those familiar faces made me game for this regardless of how it went down. I also think Jocelin Donahue did a nice job as the lead btw. The idea of the story may not necessarily be original but it's put well together imo that it doesn't matter. I think I still prefer his other movies more but I do think Ti West has a distinct film style and it works. So, there's that. Worth checking out if you wanna see more from him.
