It’s the 24th of January and guess who’s 305th birthday is today!

You may remember him from… a few other posts I’ve made. This guy with the shiny armor up there is Prussia’s King (The portrait is from around 1737, so he was still a Prince…) Frederick II., the biggest asshole of 18th century Europe.  Well, after his father.
He’s a very… Interesting fellow. His wars, of course (if he had just shut up for once there probably would have been one war less…), but his private life as well. The first drama there was was the… troublesome relationship he had with his father which ended in the very dramatic Crown Prince Trial of 1730. Which I apparently haven’t written an in-depth post about. Yet.
My favourite portrait from that time is this one from 1729 by the way

Another person important for this would be Hans Hermann von Katte, but it’s not his birthday yet, so I’ll spare this for later.
After he became King, even more funny stories happened. Like Marwitz.
Frederick wrote a series of sarcastic letters to his little brother Henry because he was jealous that Henry was with a page he fancied himself. One included this sentence:  
“If you give me permission I’ll write a wonderful novel with the title: ‘True Love: Henry and pretty Marwitz.’ and it would be so fine, so careful, so full of feeling and so sensual, that it could be a role model for our youth!”
Somehow I don’t know which other stories I should include. If you want to know something, please ask me, I love to talk about the bullshit he and his family did.

  Die Kündigung
Ever since I can remember the flat is moist. Recently water started dripping from the ceiling all over. Jugs, cups and different vessels, jars and pitchers are placed to catch the infinite source of drips and drops. But like the unevenness of a surface, or the gap in a weave, the more you concentrate on it, the more you see, so you end up taking even the last cup to catch the running water. The wall paper turns green and slides down the wall. This morning there is an envelope in the mailbox. Big bold letters say: KÜNDIGING, later certain dates, certain numbers, sincerely yours… The dog whimpers. It’s astonishing how pets can feel their human owners emotions and liabilities.

  Aristophanes
In the center a bust of Aristophanes now in the collection of the Uffizi in Florence. I got rid of the inscription on the lower part and made his hairdo more contemporary, more now. His cheeks and nose are reddened from the wine (I guess) he had at a yesterday’s little feast at his place. Today’s audience is a handful of nightjars. Pliny the Elder writes in his Naturalis Historia that they would come to the stables at night to suckle on the goats’ udders, which cease to give milk after or turn blind. We know today, that this is not true, but what they are really searching for at the stables are indeed moths, flies and other insects they are feeding on. While they hunt and feast at night, they rest sleeping and dozing throughout the day, being perfectly camouflaged by their spotted feathers.

  Twilight
Twilight on Earth is the illumination of the lower atmosphere when the Sun is not directly visible because it is below the horizon. Twilight is produced by sunlight scattering in the upper atmosphere, illuminating the lower atmosphere so that Earth’s surface is neither completely lit nor completely dark. The word twilight is also used to denote the periods of time when this illumination occurs – that’s the definition. Alas, to be precise, one has to divide the painting in three titles: The Rising of the Sun, The Moon’s Envy and Twilight in the middle. A skeleton is pulling on, let’s say a satyr’s, tongue. With musical precision it puts a blue pill on the creature’s stretched muscle. S. says it’s much likely a Benzo (Benzodiazepine – a tranquilizer) because of it’s blue color and the dropping of the head in the realm of hypnos, to sleep.

  Dad
Dad is wearing a pitcher on his head. Dad is carrying a coffee grinder. Every morning he places his grinder on the table, grinds as much as it is sufficient for two cups of coffee and puts the grinder back in the upper shelf. He likes his coffee medium ground. Dad likes to go fishing. But since he’s often so tired, exhausted from the efforts of the day, the ailments of the week, he sits ashore dozing, at his favorite lake, that is only a desert to us.

  Moving
At the end he did move. All the little and big things, all the high emotions and the rubbish had to be packed, all the dust collectors to be carried away from their places of gathering. Still, while he was looking at the things being carried out, the idea of having everything customized to its extreme pleased him, left a vague smile on his face. His name engraved on almost every piece of furniture unsettled lots of his friends and acquaintances at the time, but seemed perfectly normal later. They took it as a piece of his personality almost as if his ideas and his writing had crystallized into something graspable, and graspable it was, movable even. The small figurines he had made were even a bit much for him in the beginning, he felt uncanny in their presence, but the longer he shared a place with them, they became an essential part of the room, these little adorable depictions of himself. First he named them, later they were grouped after his moods, depictions of his very own emotions, then there were specific ones for the times of year and the hours of the day. Later he had felt the urge to show them to the outside world, the public, the audience if you want, so he commissioned bigger ones for the windows, which he placed on top of the frames in the center of the pediment each one facing in one cardinal direction.

Ich bin froh zu hören, dass sie sich von der schweren Kolik erholt haben. Gehen Sie nicht zu früh aus und lassen Sie Ihrer Natur Zeit sich zu kräftigen. Ihrem kleinen Liebling geht es sehr gut, und wenn er schön brav bleibt, sehen Sie ihn bald wieder. Im Moment schmachtet er nach Liebe und dichtet Ihnen zu Ehren Elegien voller heisse Küssen, die er Ihnen bei Ihrer Rückkehr zu geben gedenkt. Ich rate Ihnen, Ihre Kräfte zu schonen, damit Sie genug haben, um Ihrer liebe Nachdruck zu verleihen. Das Glück der Unsterblichen wird dem Ihren nicht gleichkommen, und Sie werden in tiefen Zügen Ströme der Wollust in den Armen Ihres Geliebten trinken.

Mein lieber Henri, ich werde alles widerrufen, wenn Sie meine Scherze so tragisch nehmen. Zunächst bitte ich um Entschuldigung, dass ich so wenig Achtung vor Ihren Neigungen gezeigt und gesagt habe, dass Marwitz den Tripper und fleischige Schultern hat. Ich bekenne also, dass ich mich geirrt habe, und gebe zu, dass Marwitz ein Seraphim under den Cherubinen ist, dass man ihn lieben muss, wenn man ihn sieht, und anbeten, wenn man ihn kennt.
Ich hoffe, mein lieber Henri, dass diese Erklärung Sie besänftigt, und, was Ihre Treue betrifft, so habe ich nichts Abfälliges ge��ußert. Ich habe nur die Treuen paare aufgezählt, die man aus der Geschichte kennt, aber mit denen Sie sich eigentlich noch nicht vergleichen können, denn Ihre Trennung dauert nur 10 Tage, und Ihr kleines Herzchen ist nur 4 Meilen von Ihnen entfernt. I have only listed the faithful couples one knows from history, with which you, however, cannot yet compare, since your separation has only lasted 10 days, and your little sweetheart is only 4 miles away from you. Besides, you can be sure to see him again soon. Pharamond had to wait 10 years to see Rosamunde again. There is indeed a difference. I hope, my dear Henri, that this silliness has not cost me your friendship and that you show me more fairness. Es gibt nichts Bewundernswerteres als ihre Treue. Seit Pharamon und Rosamunde, Cyrus and Mandone, Pierre de Provence und der schönen Madlone (...) hat man sowas noch nicht gesehen. Wenn Sie es mir erlauben, schreibe ich einen herrlichen Roman mit dem Titel: ‘Treue Liebe. Henri und der schöne Marwitz’, und der wäre so fein, so zärtlich, so gefühlvoll und so sinnlich, dass er unserer Jugend zum Vorbild dienen könnte. Ich würde den tripperkranken Marwitz in so lieblichen Farben malen, ich würde ihm allen Geist zuschreiben, den er selbst zu haben glaubt, und ich würde vor allem, soweit mir das möglich ist, alle seinen affektierten Zierereien schildern, mit denen er schweigend den andern zu sagen scheint: “Schaut mich an, bin ich nicht ein hübscher Junge? Muss man mich nicht lieben, anbeten und verehren? Was, du kleiner Schelm, du widersetz dich? Dein Herz liegt mir noch nicht zu Füßen? Und du, mein Engel, dir bleibt nichts weiter übrig als vor Liebe zu sterben.” Danach muss ich die Einzelheiten seiner Figur beschrieben, den Charme seiner fetten Schultern, seinen scheinbar schweren, aber im Grunde verführerischen Gang – in einem Wort – ich kann nicht mehr sagen, sonst wird mein Roman noch von einem anderen geschrieben. How does one let go? Of another, of one's self, of the life you thought you were living. Do you know any fitting poems or quotes describing the phenomenon of moving forward?
I’m not sure that I’ve ever let go of anything in my entire life. This Anne Carson quote always seems to sum up my thoughts in four succinct lines:

I find the phenomenon of letting go so inextricably tied with the idea of healing or recovery, perhaps because that’s what the desire to “let go” and move forward looks like for me. How do you let go of something that happened to you or within you, something that has altered your conception of the world from one day to the next, that has altered your own perception of yourself, of who you thought you were or could be, of what you thought your life would be? How to come to terms with the reality that there is no return to who you were before? 
For me it’s less a deliberate choice to brush my hands together and “let go”, but more simply putting one foot in front of the other every day until I find myself in a (perhaps even just slightly) different place than before. It’s allowing myself to grieve what I thought my life would be, and also allowing space to hold gratitude for what my life contains. It’s waiting for everything inside of me and around me to shatter, and meanwhile still moving forward. It’s allowing myself to realize that I’m still here and I’m still a whole person, even if the pieces of me have shattered and rearranged themselves into something I don’t necessarily always recognize. It’s sitting alone with myself, with the silence that sometimes makes a home of my throat, with the restlessness beneath my skin, with the fear that who I am becoming won’t be enough, and moving anyway in any direction but back. It’s sitting with grief and shame and bitterness and groundlessness, and understanding that these feelings are temporary, and not things be used to validate my fears or distortions.
I think the deliberate choice involved for me is the one to allow space for growth, to not cling so tightly to past hopes or ideas that there is no longer any room for anything else, anything new, anything different. It’s allowing myself the belief and compassionate understanding that I can be something other than I thought or hoped I would be, and it’s ok. I think sometimes we deny ourselves chances to grow or change because of the shame we feel that we have failed, and to deny ourselves those opportunities for growth would be the real shame. What others believe does not matter—that we have invested ourselves utterly in a relationship that failed is no shame on us, that we have invested ourselves utterly in a dream or a hope that just didn’t work out is no shame on us. I think the worst thing is to remain in a place that is no longer serving us for fear of appearing the failure to others. There is so much opportunity to be had in letting go of one thing, anything, to make room for something else.
I don’t know that this compilation of poetry, essays, literature, and letters will offer any insight, or comfort, or guidance. Letting go must surely be an intensely personal process, an intensely personal thing, a different kind of animal for everyone—but still there seem to be some universal experiences. So these are some of the words that came to mind for me—whether they touch on grappling with the impossibility of letting go and moving forward, the hope of it, the desire for it, the loneliness of it, or the frustration with it (bc of course it’s something that cannot be forced, only something that can be allowed):
