In the Land of Tiny Books
Our Head of Special Collections Max Yela has collaborated for decades with Milwaukee artist and art professor at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD) Leslie Fedorchuk (on the left in the first image; Max is on the right). This semester, Leslie is teaching a MIAD course called "Magical Miniatures" and she brought her class over for a discussion and review of artists books that use small scale as expression.
While Max is not very fond of miniatures or the miniaturization of books, he does like books that are small for compositional reasons. In fact, one of his favorite artists books, In Here Out There (third image) by the late Minnesota artist Jody Williams, is quite small (5 x 7 cm). Since we hold about 95% of Jody Williams's work and about 90% of the small editioned work of Peter & Donna Thomas, after a discussion, the class spent time reviewing selected works by these artists, plus about a dozen others by local book artists.
This was the first time these art students, many of them Juniors and Seniors, had ever encountered artists books before, and all expressed that it was a transformative experience. We look forward to seeing some of the book work that comes out of the assignments for this class!

Rat Logs: Day 1, August 2018
Today is the day I arrive at MIAD. This marks the first day of my hunt for the wererat. I will assimilate into the student body, but nobody will know my true motive.
Whatever it takes, I will find him.
There is no sacrifice too great.
There is no lead too small

This is the image that started it all. The rat is my bigfoot.
Finding the rat will truly be my tour de force.

MIAD / Digital Painting for Illustrators / Still Life
For Assignment 1 in Digital Painting for Illustrators, we were tasked to draw a still life in a digital medium while trying to replicate the looks of physical work.
I decided to go with the look of charcoal on grey paper to help attain that look and also using a paper texture.
This was completed on January 21st, 2020.

~Welcome to my blog~
Hello everyone,
I am Helen an aspiring art educator. My journey in becoming an art educator started out when I worked as volunteer for AWE in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There I discovered my passion for teaching art to kids. After completing my undergraduate degree in Fine Arts, at MIAD, I decided to pursue my dream in teaching art to children. Then I worked as an Arts coordinator at the boys and girls club in greater Milwaukee. During my time at the club it really helped my to grow and shape my career in becoming a future art educator. After working at the club I went into working as a substitute teacher. Working as a substitute teacher taught a lot about curriculum and instruction.  Traveling from school to school I immersed my self in teaching students of all different backgrounds. Which taught me how to adapt to many different teaching environments. After working as a substitute teacher I became an ESL teacher in South Korea, for Kindergarten and Elementary students. The opportunity was life changing. It lead me into wanted to go back to school to become an art teacher. After spending a year teaching South Korea I return to the USA and started studying art education at the UW-Milwaukee.

Week 1 - About me
My name is Isabela, and one of my nicknames I go by is belita! I’m a computer engineering major who recently transferred from MSOE to UWM. I was born and raised in Milwaukee. I took this class because I'm actually a very artsy person and have always been interested in (graphic) design. I’ve explored many mediums of design and one of my favorites has to be typography! My experience is probably more extensive than most engineering students regarding the arts. I attended Milwaukee HighSchool of the Arts where I was a Visual Arts major for four years, I graduated with multiple AP art portfolio credits and a few MIAD classes under my belt. While in high school my focus was surrounding mostly photography as I did all the school, photography and designed the yearbooks. I am very familiar with the fundamentals of art, design, and art history. I also grew up in a very artsy community and would spend a lot of time exploring the art museum or taking summer classes there. As far as art and design go I'm very inspired by nature and romanticism. The best movement to reflect my inspiration would be impressionism. I’m drawn to the warmth and intention of each movement within an impressional piece.
When purchasing things especially for the purpose of my computer needs, design is almost always the deciding factor. How does this item work with the rest of my machine? Is it aesthetically pleasing? Does it work for the types of things I use my machine for? The latest purchase would have to be my mousepad. Previously I had used the plain simple black mouse pad which just gets the job done but isn't aesthetically pleasing. I had two choices, another small but cute mousepad, or a very large one that lights up. I ended up going with the larger one because while working i need more room to move my mouse around but also it provides extra protection for the desk around my keyboard from wear. The fact that it lights up is a plus and I'd consider the secondary factor as to why I choose it.
Attached is a piece from my senior show (2018)

MLK Day
On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we take a moment to reflect on the individuals who have fought for and continue to advocate for civil rights and present two letterpress broadsides printed by Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design students in 2010.
The collection is entitled Everyday Prophets and explores quotes by notable Black activists and artists; Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, James Baldwin, and Bob Marley. The first broadside printed by Patrick Sharrow examines the ideological tensions between contemporaries Malcolm X and MLK who both sought racial justice but proposed very different routes to get there. Andrea Bartley’s broadside takes a more philosophical perspective featuring quotes from all four visionaries. Bartley’s text is printed over (a hard to digitally capture) embossing of ‘LOVE’.

Research Question #2
**This is a follow up to the questions I asked in blog post #2**
When I visited for the second time as a volunteer at the La Causa center, I observed that there was this child, Zacari, who was about 12 years old and we bonded over our love for art. We colored, drew, and talked about me going to MIAD. He said that his favorite part about La Causa was that he could play and color here with his siblings. And this made me question: Why are the arts underfunded and vanishing from urban public schools?
While conducting some research I discovered an article titled “Where Do the Arts Stand in Our Schools?” The article discusses specific ways in which participation in the arts can benefit students and the community. It goes on to explain that including the arts in school days helps enhance students' social skills, reduce dropout rates, and help students get into college or to be more attractive to employers. For students like Zacari, it serves as a distraction from his home life. He explained that he is the oldest of three, so he helps out around the house and with his siblings. He deserves an outlet where he can take the time to express himself. Children like Zacari rely on the arts-- and we should listen to him. Give Zacari a place and the resources to express himself.
According to a survey in the article below, “art and music were given a higher priority in schools than standardized tests, sports, and foreign languages.” So it is proven--school is better with the arts. Although it’s a privilege to be exposed to the arts, so is having an education. Whether it be dance, theatre, fine art, or design, students should choose to have a choice to explore. If all else, they relieve stress and help kids do better in school. Without me accidentally being put in my graphic design class, I wouldn’t be at MIAD today. Give the student’s a chance to choose because it’s our responsibility to keep creativity alive. It’s what makes our world beautiful and exciting.

Journal Entry, January 29
During my time spending my second day at the high school volunteering was an excited day. I was able to chat with my old art professor about how was life treating him since he was rewarded teacher of the year. He mentioned that he was honor to be part of a wonderful community and felt really thankful for everyone who appreciated his present. While he was getting his junior class attention he was speaking to them about getting involved with scholarships at the MIAD pre-college. He allowed me to speak to the class because he said that I was a prime example since I took classes during the summer in the past. I shared my experience and mentions that its an easy opportunity and allows you to figure out your true passion for art. I also answer some student questions, one of the questions was what did I received while taking these classes. I told them I only received 3 college credits but even though it was college credits I also mentioned that a week later I received a letter in the mail from MIAD for a $58,000 scholarship. Talking to the students was a wonderful bond to help them prepare for their future. throughout the time, I have spoken to both juniors and seniors classes about myself and shared on where I’m at now since I graduated high school.

MIAD / Adv. Figure Drawing / Character Model Assignment
For Project 4 we were asked to make 3 different character designs and a piece with the characters together.
The goal was to have 1 male character, 1 female character, and 1 fusion character that incorporated elements of the previous two.
For my fusion, I decided to make the character a hybrid species.
At the time of the piece, the pandemic had been put into effect and disrupted workflow making this work likely not as much to my personal standards.
This piece was posted on April 20th, 2020.

January 31st, 2020
Today was my orientation at the Co-op.
I came for the orientation at 11am and met one of the managers, Annica, as well as another MIAD student who is going to be volunteering there. There was an option to work in the cafe portion or the store- she chose the cafe and I opted for the store.
The store was small but well-organized with several wall dispensers for grains and nuts by weight. There was organic produce and vegan options, and I loved the home-y feel of the place. Everyone knew each other by name and seemed happy to be there, and the community spirit was beautiful. I am going to be working Fridays from 8am-11, and I am a looking forward to my first shift!
