Javi (Javier) Rivera Aragón

Javier is a Spanish version of Xavier (which makes complete sense but I didn't know it until I looked it up for this) and means "new house." I didn't give the name much thought when I picked it. It was just a Spanish/Mexcan boy's name and I liked the way it sounded. 

Ale (Alejandra) Rivera Aragón

Alejandra means "defender of men" and is a Spanish version of "Alexandra" and a feminine version of "Alexander". Her nickname, Ale, is pronounced "AH-leh", not like the alcoholic beverage. Ale was named after her father (Alec or Alejo depending on the universe).

Bonus fact: When Alejo and Elena found out they were having twins (and a boy and a girl) they picked names for both of them. Alejo planned to named the older twin after himself - Alejandro for a boy, Alejandra for a girl - and then Javier or Jacinta for the younger one. Javi will NEVER know how lucky he was to be the younger twin because he would hate his name even more if he was named after his father.

Lister "Mickey" Micheals

Mickey, which is his preferred name, is a diminutive of Michael, which is his last name. His first name, Lister, means "dyer". I picked Lister after the main character in the book Red Dwarf (which I would 100% recommend to anyone who can find it) because I was looking for a name that the character might not want to use. It came down to Lister or Eustace (thank you, Chronicles of Narnia) but I'd already used Eusticia in another fic so "Lister" won out here.

Samuel Harris

Samuel means "Told by God". I actually decided on "Sam" first because I was looking for a short (one syllable), unisex name. I know that some people are actually named Sam (not short for Samuel or Samantha or some such) but for this character it definitely felt like a nickname. Even if it's what they go by 98% of the time. I'm still not completely sold on the last name Harris but it's staying until I come up with something I like better. (Who knows, in that time I might warm up to it!)

Nadia Das

Nadia is both an Arabic name and a Russian one but I'm choosing to go with the Arabic meaning which is "tender, delicate". One of my childhood friends had an older sister named Nadia and ever since the name always felt kind of magical to me? The character is NOT based on her at all, I just wanted to use the name somewhere and it seemed like a good fit for this character.

Thanks for the ask @raynerberg As it's one question, I'm going to answer for all 4 of my main OCs! 8 - Greatest strength and greatest flaw about your OC? Seren Jones- Starfield Strength: Determination. No matter how long it takes she will find home. Flaw: Grief. She threw herself into Unity without waiting, which will bring it's own issues later on. It also effected how she reacted for the first few universes, though she is getting better at dealing with her grief. Zofie Orel - Deus Ex/Assassin's Creed Strength: Patience. She knows her mission is the long game. The pieces need to be in the right places to take off the board. Flaw: Perfectionism. She does things a certain way because they work for her. So she finds it sometimes hard to work in other ways or with other people. Kiara Black - Thief/Dishonored Strength: Perceptiveness. She sees things even Garrett misses. She also perceives the world through the eyes of someone open to the arcane. Flaw: Naivety. She sees the good in the arcane, sadly not everyone else sees it that way. Aeryn Ryder - ME:Andromeda Strength: Stubborness. She didn't want the role of the Pathfinder, but it was put upon her shoulders and she will do her best to be a good Pathfinder as so much is riding on her. No matter who tries to hold her back or wishes to harm. Flaw: Emotional. She hates cruelty and often thinks first with her heart over logical separation. Others would also say her stubborness is also a flaw...

I have no idea who’s got something they’re working on, so consider yourself tagged by me if you want to post it. :)

I recently had a hankering to replay ME:Andromeda and I played as Scott and started having some ~thoughts~ about Sara Ryder waking up in a galaxy in which her brother is already famous. My version of the Ryders puts the fun in dysfunctional.

By the time Sara wakes up in Andromeda, her little brother is already a legend. The pathfinder who rescued the other pathfinders, who found a way to make their busted golden worlds habitable again, who brought the krogan back to the Nexus, (because apparently they’d left), who found the missing arcs and brought their lost and hungry to their new home. 

Sara remembers when he ate playdough for fun. 

Then she gets kidnapped and he comes riding to the rescue in his souped up nomad with the whole pathfinder team and all the friends he’s made in Andromeda, laughing and cracking jokes while he faces down a robot so large it defies description. Turns out it’s not even the first one he’s seen. 

He’s confident and capable in ways Sara has never seen him be, in ways he’s never been with her, and she would never have expected the sharp pang of hurt that thought brings with it. Sure she’s only older by a minute, but that minute might as well have been a year. Mom used to call him Sara’s shadow because he’d move when she did. If she was action, Scott was reaction; he had always looked to her. She barely recognizes him now. 

She’ll give him this, by the time everything is over and Scott has saved the galaxy and she’s been cleared for duty (again), he offers her a berth on his ship and he doesn’t even look like he’s being forced by anyone to do it. She could always tell when his altruism to do things like share crayons or vid screen time was self motivated or when he’d been gently nudged by their mother. One was always easier to say yes to than the other. 

But Sara’s been part of a unit before, part of a team. People she’d thought would have stuck with her when—well. When it had mattered. But she’s never had anything like Scott has now. She wonders if he recognizes this motley crew as the family the Ryders had never truly been. 

It can’t last, nothing ever does. “No,” she says. She doesn’t try to explain but Scott doesn’t ask.

Alec Ryder.

A veteran galactic explorer.

He enlisted as an Alliance soldier at a young age and was immediately distinguished by his great skills. For this reason he was chosen as a member of the special task force that took part in the historic journey through the Charon mass relay. He and the rest of the crew, led by Jon Grissom, were the first humans to explore the unknown beyond the Solar System. It's thanks to their heroic deeds that humanity has been able to expand and flourish in the Galaxy, and without their efforts we would never have gotten this far.

Back on Earth, Alec Ryder would go on to further prove his mettle. His experience and his determination have made him a perfect candidate for a new special training, later be known as the N7 Program, solidifying himself as one of the first members of Alliance military's elite. Few people can boast this title and he's been a beacon and inspiration for many of them. He later gave maximum proof of this value by fighting on the front lines during the First Contact War, which reached its peak during the siege of Shanxi.

Yet few in humanity remember his deeds. His controversial AI research and experimentation, illegal under Council law, resulted in a dishonorable discharge from the Alliance military and his memory was discredited. He later found himself fighting a lone battle, but in spite of his disgrace he did never give up, and it was thanks to his project that he was chosen to lead the Andromeda Initiative alongside Jien Garson. Without the SAM technology we could not have guaranteed a future for all species in this Galaxy.

But above of all of this… he was my father.

I owe him everything. I wouldn't be here now without him. The things my father taught me made me a better woman and the Pathfinder you needed most. I hope my father knows that the seeds he sowed are still growing. He showed me how it feels to feel the sky within my reach and I always will remember all the strength he gave to me. I'll keep a part of him with me and everywhere I am, there he'll be.

He will never be forgotten.

Once he said that when his time came, he wanted to go out among stars no one had seen before. Somewhere... there's a star that's shining so bright that I can see him smile. Thanks dad, for everything.

I’ve only done the first major mission of me:andromeda so far but honestly I’m loving what this game is shooting for.

You have this entire prior trilogy about a person who’s qualifications and ability was never doubted to be anything but something they earned, even if many people are deeply divided about what that person chose to do with their power. This spearpoint of the galaxy that broke a cycle that had beaten the galaxy since time immemorial.

And then you have Ryder, this twenty something year old kid. Who everyone - understandably! - doubts the ability of and likely thinks superseded the chain of command through pure nepotism. Their loving if very distant father essentially kills himself and endangers the success of the larger colonisation effort to save the life of his child and before you even have time to process the weight of THAT suddenly you’re faced with the burden of an entire colony’s desperate hope, all while they privately think you’re kidding yourself about your odds of success.

That’s so fucking fun!!!!!
