i saw that content disparity post and i was like oh so THATS why i gravitated towards shadowheart and astarion. they were the most fleshed out .. i love them both but wyll and karlach really deserved the same amount of love and care :(

its weird that people seem to be more complainy about astarion getting 'too much' content than wyll/karlach not getting enough though? i think some ppl just don't like him (which is fair) and are using this to air their grievances or w/e, but again the issue is not that astarion got a lot of love poured into his story. we aren't mad about that. we're mad that the other characters didn't. i think it's not entirely nonsensical for a character whose modus operandi is fucking his way to safety to have a higher ratio of "romance" scenes, but more unique scenes total is, um.... larian

whats also interesting is that astarion really isnt a heartthrob main character type??? like he's the greasy little guy in the corner and i think trying to make him a male lead doesn't work. he is not your catboy, he's thirty nine. i wish his storyline with tav was more reflective of that; they're adults, and i wish the vibe was a bit more emotionally mature and pragmatic... in terms of like, romcom male leads, wyll fits that niche much better tbh. i honestly think he'd be a really good headline love interest, if larian took a chance on him

imo astarion's romance plotline should've been nastier and more tumultuous and more toxic and less gifset-able. make them work for the soft happy ending. but WYLL is a folk hero!!! he should've been the love interest sweeping you off your feet!!!!!!

ok so basically how all of this got started is my partner was watching a youtuber review a shitty dark academia romance book, and in listening i got incensed and was like dude i can definitely write something better than that! and then, very similarly to donut wip i ended up making a wip (who’s mc i really didn’t like at first and tbh i still don’t really like len like i wouldn’t be friends with her she annoys me. but i think she grows up ok lmao i mean she has to pff) and managed to make something that kind of interests me enough to try writing.

and i also wanted an excuse to try out the snowflake method of story writing/planning cuz i saw it floating around and tbh why not? why not just do a thing lol. but anyway! haha have an actual summary. like, a real one lmao:

Lennon Rhapsody Granger (17) is sent to a private prep institute for troubled youth after she gets expelled from school for the fifth time. There, she meets and becomes romantically involved with bad boy heartthrob Aurora O’Rion (18). Aurora is a lackey of a group called The Centurion, who do not take kindly to outsiders being so close to their secrets. Aurora is ordered to kill Lennon, and nearly succeeds—but foregoes the final blow to try and save her life. He hides Lennon with his best friend Morrigan (18), who works for the same organization, and together they try to get a presumed-dead Lennon away from The Centurion before they discover that she’s still alive.

and so like aside from the summary, have a “gist of” explanation lmao

basically the things that i’m drawing from with this wip (nicknamed gofficka LMAO) is

dark academia (it’s set at a prep school, there’s the usual tropes of secret societies, bad boy love interests etc)

gothic romance (the twisted romance angle)

the YA genre (this story is very unintentionally inspired by twilight 💀)

erotica (bc why not)

however some notes on that. firstly being, in YA romance similar to twilight, the mc girl character is supposed to be a self insert for the reader and i want to start the story giving it that vibe, however about halfway through when the Big Shift happens, i’m gonna be veering down a road where 1. len very obviously has her own personality 2. she’s not really a good person (bc a lot of these mcs, BELLA ESPECIALLY, are very shite tbh but everyone regards them as some perfect angel somehow? don’t get it) and most importantly 3. she’s going to be called out on that. especially by morrigan lmao.

also, the “love triangle” (it’s really a love angle but whatever) in these stories is usually centered around the main girl and len has the same assumption too, however it’s revealed that the love angle’s central spoke is around aurora, not len. morrigan is gay, and tbh he’s my lowkey favorite pfff but aurora and len are growing on me. anyway tho he provides a shock of clarity for the narrative, imo—that wanting to love and forcing it isn’t what love is (to me). that there’s more to it than just being attracted to someone, which tbh a lot of YAs just kind of think is close enough. there’s no real chemistry and no attempt to show the complexities of actually genuinely loving someone. sO yeah.

also, the bad boy, aurora? he’s actually bad lol. he almost kills len pff and len having and dealing with ptsd surrounding that situation is also a thing. him being put into a position where most YAs would have him chose the love interest i decided to make him choose something else. because a new love isn’t going to be that strong and that’s the whole point to me??? that love alone isn’t going to solve all these crazy problems. it can contribute to fixing them and becoming strong but idk everything is more complex than that.

i have a lot of feelings about the complexities of romantic love and i hate when it’s cheap so i’m gonna make it. uhhhh not that.

but anyway the actual organization isn’t the point of this story. my brain WANTS me to make a sequel after this book just so i can explore the three of them in a pretty properly functioning polycule where there’s spokes and not full angles but we’ll have to see pffff

And when you add Joseph to the mix, well he just gets dumber. Joseph really gets under his skin and he's unbelievably jealous of him, which makes him reckless and stupid when Joseph is concerned

But also he definitely tries to get closer to Joseph to try to take him down, so they end up hanging out a lot and doing friendly stuff together. It's a weird frenemyship between them cause Joseph can tell Jean hates him, but for some reason Jean keeps asking to hang out?? And Joseph says yes for some reason??

And I like to think that Joseph specifically is the catalyst for Jean kidnapping his sweetheart. He can't risk losing another thing to Joseph, especially not his prized possession!

(And at least in my headcanon that's also the catalyst for him killing Joseph)

Anyway idk I love the idea of Jean seeming like a totally normal, charming dude. Just your bog standard actor who's kind of full of himself but nice enough and a bit of a heartthrob. Like even when he's manipulating and abusing his sweetheart, everyone around him doesn't see it until he fully snaps and kills for them/kidnaps them because he's so fucking good at seeming normal.

first impressions: super funny and refreshing! aota-sensei's [tanabe momoko] character is nothing new (japan's favorite trope is the meek worker-ant mc who doesn't speak up for themself) but she's not constantly putting blame on herself + she acknowledges when ppl at her nursery school are acting ridiculous. shibuya-kun [kyomoto taiga] is a twist on the aloof-type lead where he's so awkward in social situations that the fmc can't get a read on him. he's a heartthrob actor but his life revolves around his little sister and he dresses exclusively in high-necked tracksuits lol. rizu is such a cheerful kid, they make it apparent how loved she is by her brother. overall all the mains are cute and rootable <3

pacing: nice and quick! (idk why some 10-episode jdramas pace themselves like multi-season shows?) the supporting cast was established v neatly (we've got 2 teachers, a principal, a housemate(?), and an ex-bf on aota's side + a sister, a manager, a rival/costar, and an absent mom on shibuya's side). they got aoto's requisite "collapse due to shouldering others' burdens" crisis out of the way unlike some jdramas that let it stew for ages, and shibuya's fallen for her by the end of the episode (whether he realizes this is a different question lol).

atmosphere: sooo unserious. they're really putting the com in romcom! dramatic mysterious wind moments, heartbeat sound effects, literal falling in love, etc etc etc. it's all very tongue in cheek and shoujo manga-like. i love it!

episode notes: a really strong first episode! i'm glad they got aoto's overwork crisis out of the way, but i'm not crazy about how they did it?. she loses her voice for like five minutes. at first i thought she'd caught a cold from pulling an all-nighter or smth but she was speaking fine afterward? some dramas make it an endless cycle of fmc getting overwhelmed + needing saving and i hope this drama doesn't follow that pattern. shibuya's character is really exaggerated in terms of his emotionlessness/ social ineptitude. it wouldn't work in a more serious romance drama but it sets the comedic tone for this drama, and aoto's reactions to him are priceless! they also set the stage for some potential love troubles further down the road with aoto's ex-bf (another irl idol lol) and shibuya's costar, and i wonder how shibuya's popularity as an actor might complicate their relationship?

imo a clever move by the writers is creating a jdrama-in-a-jdrama where snippets of shibuya's current acting role are shown like an actual drama. it lets viewers see shibuya in his on-mode but more importantly it provides fanservice for all the idol fangirls tuning in. never in 100 years did i think i'd see a kyomoto taiga bl kabedon. but:

no, you shouldn’t let an entire planet die if you can easily do something about it? that is literally never what you should do, and if you feel like you’re backed into a corner where that’s the only thing you can do either your rule sucks or you’re applying it wrong? but either way, clearly don’t do that?

worf’s surprise adoptive brother is 100% right about the spirit of the prime directive vis-a-vis the letter of the prime directive, beverly is 100% right that choosing not to intervene is also a choice, and what’s more she’s made that argument every other time this has come up which is actually some of the best character writing she’s gotten so given how often i complain about her & deanna’s bad writing i do need to extend credit here. and she keeps getting proven right so idk why picard always has to go back to zero in these arguments.

the worst part is when the planet’s atmosphere dramatically dissipates and picard turns to the bridge crew and starts lecturing them on how what they’re seeing is tragic but necessary to uphold the federation’s values, and it’s just so gratingly tone deaf i just fucking hate this bit of writing.

because i think what best reflects the federation’s values in this episode is when that one guy escapes from the simulation and stumbles into ten forward clearly terrified and basically everyone rushes to help him & reassure him. deanna especially shines in this scene, and while i really don’t like where this plot eventually ends up going, chalk up another actually good moment given to one of the show’s women main characters.

the central plot between worf and his foster brother is just… not it, imo? it comes out of nowhere and goes right back to nowhere, because we’d never heard of this character before and we’re never going to hear about him again. on top of that the whole “grrr brothers grrr boys can’t talk about their feelings grrr” shit is just so not my vibe regardless. c-rank

yeah so i’m giving the episode where dr. beverly crusher fucks a ghost a passing grade, and i actually rather seriously considered giving it a higher grade. i’m sorry, i get why it’s so infamous, but if you’re approaching it completely seriously it’s just not nearly as bad as some of the show’s worst episodes, nor is it boring? and if you’re approaching it unseriously, which obviously you should because holy shit it’s the episode where dr. beverly crusher fucks a ghost???, it’s a lot of fun to clown on.

planet scotland is just a bizarre choice, and while we’re on the subject i’m sorry but scottish fabio is just not that hot? like, he’s just… a guy! everyone is acting like he’s this strikingly attractive heartthrob, but he’s just… super mediocre!

anyway yeah, this episode does totally deserve its reputation and i’m not trying to argue that it’s a good tng episode because holy shit i think basically every decision that went into it was bad and wrong? but it just doesn’t strike me as remotely hateable in the way you hear it talked about sometimes. c-rank

I’ve been in Nigeria for 10 days now and I’ve managed to finish a grand total of 🥁🥁🥁1 book. 😬 Idk why my first time back home in two years I thought I was going to read but… But I am going to shock the masses, but the one book I have finished is a contemporary YA book 😱 And to shock the masses x2…. I liked it 😳 Love Times Infinity is a contemporary YA novel that offers the perspective of those in society who are born as the result of sexual assault. The book is sad in its realism and relatable in its depiction of a main character who struggles with the relatively common feeling that you are not enough. Michelle offers us perspective into that feeling when it’s not just herself, but the whole world saying that same thing. Love Times Infinity was a hard hitting YA novel about trying to believe that you are worthy while constantly debating your existence. It is heart wrenching and offers so many instances where I found myself debating…is there even a right answer 🤔. Agreed. I bet the main characters signed multiple year contracts, so they couldn’t get rid of the people stealing Nolan’s “spotlight”. They could only give them crappy stories to tell. Or perceived crappy stories - giving more sir time to Nolan + <insert young woman here>. I feel bad, but it’s pretty funny IMO how the writers in a way made Bailey very unlike able to the fans cheering for Chenford. If the bulk of your fans are women, don’t make your female lead someone the bulk of those women wouldn’t be friends with. I know people like Bailey. I’m friends with the Nylas, the Angela’s, the Thalias and definitely the Lucys.

Season 6 + 7 - if they get that far, will be interesting. I would expect some people to leave at that point. Eric is becoming a bit of a heartthrob, and could propel himself back into movies or another series where he’s the lead. Especially if Tim and Lucy get together and explode in popularity . If they don’t get together, and Eric and Melissa are not still actively fighting for Chenford, then I’ll stop watching the show for sure.

I don’t like that there is a spin off. The show isn’t a rock solid success yet. I could see more focus on the spin off and less attention and care paid to the characters like Chenford who created the buzz to begin with.

Winter Season will determine their fate for me. Too many unknowns at this point. I’m tentatively hopeful.

I completely agree with what you're articulating about rape culture & consent, and my heart goes out to any survivors who might find the pushback from your other anons triggering. So I was just at dinner with a friend who works as an assistant at a large publicity firm with some high-profile actor clients; this friend is a gay woman. She was describing to me(1)

(2) the prevalence of joking-but-not-really-joking discourse at happy hour with her cohort of assistants about becoming romantically or sexually involved with clients. The gist of it is that some of the male actors are heartthrobs or leading men-types and it'd be enviable to hook up with one, and if it led to working with that client more, greater job stability at the firm, or possibilities of advancement then that'd be even better. My friend felt quite excluded from all this joking around

(3) which was primarily queer men & women who date men, discussing male actors. I'm afraid I'll communicate this clumsily, but to us her experience seemed to highlight another of the many problematic aspects of famous/powerful men looking for sex or romance from people they meet at work who have much less power. IMO it's much less damaging than the consent/rape culture implications, but still noteworthy. It's the way a workplace culture where acquiescing to this behavior is expected and may

(4) lead to professional benefit/advancement excludes people who don't have the capacity to participate in this (e.g. people who don't date men, like my friend). My friend feels she's definitely witnessed some more-than-collegial relationships between male clients & various staff. Some involve sex/romance, others are things like golf or party buddies. I suppose they are no good for workplace hookups, being that they aren't sexually available, and the actors would rather bestow the favor of their friendship upon other men. Again, sorry if the point's getting muddled. Just thinking about workplace exclusion from advancement as a component of this whole mess. Hope this makes sense...

So I basically agree with what you say, but a couple of things. I think it's important to think of this as all part of the same problem - it isn't really a different and separate thing. There are lots of different ways that employees navigate, and are harmed by, an environment where making rich men happy has an impact on your career. The core problem is the same and the way it has to be changed is the same (basically overthrowing capitalism - but there are some interim demands).

The other thing I'd say is that I think the best place to focus efforts to change is the workplace, not the clients. The workplace is the structure that can change, and is the place that has the legal responsibility.

Has anyone else noticed that there are barley any traditionaly good looking guys in supernatural except for the main three, specially J2. Maybe they added some at the last few seasons. But all the male side characters are no competition for the J2. And i think it was done on purpose by the casting crews. Kind of to not let other "good looking" people to steal J2's thunder ( Which i barely doubt would have happened in the first place).

Look at the vampire diaries, everybody who breaths in that show is a fucking heartthrob, even the smallest of the characters. But in spn all the male side characters are purposefully chosen to be less attractive than J2, imo.

So, the way I see it, there are two ways to do a Disney Descendants AU:

1. Have the characters take on the roles of the main characters

2. Have the characters be themselves, but with Disney Villain Parents

And guess what? I have thoughts on both of them.

First: the “let’s put the sides in the same roles as the movies.” Remember, these are my thoughts, and any other ideas are valid.

Virgil - Mal (trying to prove themselves but always falling a bit short? Yeah, this is the only one that I don’t think you could persuade me differently)

Roman - Evie (I’m going based on the theories that came out after Deceit’s reveal where someone was a former dark side, and Roman going from Pride to Creativity would very nicely mirror Evie’s transition from “have to be fairest of them all” to “I’m going to make the fairest outfits for everyone”)

Logan - Carlos (in the first book, Carlos is a freaking scientific genius; he uses science so well people think it’s magic, and that is very Logan. Plus, former dark side theory, Logan went from Apathy to Logic)

Patton - Ben (What? Only 3/4 being Villain Kids? It’s more likely than you think. Honestly, I don’t remember there ever being a dark side theory for Patton, and he would be the one to see good in everyone, especially Virgil)

Now here’s where I see it going different ways: Option 1: Deceit as Maleficent (impossible dark standards for Virgil) and Remy as Uma (honestly just wants some respect); Option 2: same as option 1, but Remy as Jay (Remy’s smooth and a heartthrob, knows it, and flaunts it; plus Jay is a main character and I can’t think of anyone else); Option 3: we ignore Maleficent and have Deceit as Uma (once again wants respect, and would be willing to lie and manipulate to get what he wants) and Remy as Harry Hook (another smooth character; I don’t know, I want both Harry and Remy to be included somewhere)

And now, the “Who would be their villain parents?” Two quick notes: 1) Since Thomas is past high school (and to make some things work plot wise); whereas the main VK’s were born 4 years after their parents being on the isle, the sides were born before (but not too soon before) everyone was sent to the isle; and 2) I didn’t mean to have all the sides having more sympathetic “We’re Not So Bad” stories; it just kinda happened, and you know what? The movies are about the kids proving to be more than their parents; it works.

Patton as the son of Anastasia and the Baker (yes, I actually kinda like the Cinderella sequels, and Anastasia and the Baker were a super cute couple IMO. I can see Patton being stuck in the middle, where when everyone was being sent to the isle, Anastasia tried to give him to the Baker so Patton could stay in Auradon, but couldn’t. Teased for his half-good heritage his whole life. He tries to stay positive, behaving more like his step-aunt than his mother, and even tries to be good when his mother gets roped back in with her sister and mother.)

Virgil as the son of Hades and Persephone (going with Thomas’s answer for Disney Parents in general, but adding to it. Everyone knew Hades had a son, but as he had no serious romantic interests, everyone thought he used some god-like ability to just create a son. It wasn’t until Virgil was able to make plants grow and bring something close to Spring to the isle that people began to wonder [before you say there’s no magic on the isle, I say god capabilities is a bit stronger and different than magic] eventually who his mother is is revealed, but Virgil is on the isle and the damage is done)

Logan as the “son” of Claude Frollo (”son” in quotations because Logan was going to be Frollo’s new Quasimodo; Logan was sent to the isle as the child of some nameless henchman, and Frollo saw giving the child an educated upbringing in the name of the Lord as a chance to get back in Auradon’s favor. And so, Logan grew up with a love of reading and learning, but aggravated Frollo when he would ask questions about the reading that questioned religion. The breaking point was, “If it says in John 3:16 that God loved All the world, why do you feel the need to scorn people in God’s world?” After that, Frollo gave Logan a roof over his head and nothing else, and after Logan was revealed to be a homosexual, even the roof over his head was taken away.)

Roman as the son of Gaston (Gaston already has 4 sons in canon, but he said he wanted 6 or 7 boys, so I could see Roman being the first. Gaston sees himself as a good guy who saved a fair maiden from a hideous beast, so he would try to raise at least the first son to be a handsome, charming man every girl would want. Roman doesn’t have Gaston’s deep-rooted sexism, growing up around female villains like Maleficent and Ursula who prove that girls are just as smart and powerful as boys, but Gaston can live with that as long as some girl becomes Roman’s wife. Then, Roman comes home one day with the same star-struck look that Gaston recognized from the day he first saw Belle. He pesters his son for details, and it seems Roman has found Belle 2.0: affinity for blue, a major bookworm, and chocolate brown hair. Roman even says his love’s name is Logan, but as Logan is a gender-neutral name and Gaston is too self-absorbed to know the inhabitants of the isle, Gaston encourages Roman to pursue his love. It isn’t until Gaston sees his son using his charms on a young lad that he has a problem. In a furious rage, Gaston drags his son home and berates him, being harsher than ever when Roman says he has never felt that way toward a woman. And so, Roman was cast onto the streets.)

With their spouses having made them softer, Anastasia and Hades are more welcoming to Roman and Logan when their parents disown them. They keep mostly to themselves on the edge of the isle, being too good to be accepted by the others.

There’s really only two who come around.

One is a young lad who, while he takes the form of a human, is the son of the snake, Kaa. He manipulates others to get what he wants, and has a voice so hypnotic that most believe any lie he tells. Yet no one knows his name, so he’s just known as Deceit.

The other a kid named Remy whose parents no one had ever heard of. He’s learned to not care what others think; it’s the only way to survive. Rumors about him are everything from his parents betrayed their cause to save their heroic foe, to he was actually only adopted by a villain because he reminded the villain of a boy that convinced him to just be a thief rather than a murderer.

What are your hopes for Jonathan in S3? What narrative/direction would you like for his character to go in?

i have such lowered expectations after s2…what i’d really just like to see is jonathan have a plotline and an actual character arc that gives charlie something challenging to act, but idk if that will remotely happen. I’d really love to see jonathan/joyce scenes again, and I want to see him working at his job (which is what at this point, still the movie theatre? something else?). that seems like such an important part of his character and the byers’ financial situation, so why not show it? would also be curious to get more of him saving up for nyu, caring about that, or being frustrated with it, etc. if some sort of jopper is happening, i’d love to see jonathan interact more with hopper–there were some interesting short scenes of that in s1 (i also think there’s a lot unresolved with lonnie, and wouldn’t it make sense for him to make an appearance?). i also would like to be superficial and request summery!jonathan 🍓⚡️🌳 possibly shirtless mowing a lawn or swimming or something (tho the show seems to not get what they have in charlie at all talent wise most importantly but also kinda weird 90ish heartthrob-ish wise).

as for jancy, i’m still pretty bewildered by how they handled them in s2. I’d love to just see them have an actual conversation. I’m kind of fine if they are having conflicts, idc, as long as we get some real kind of substantive exchange–though, if any kind of conflict does happen, i hope we get a sense of just what their relationship is like before that, like in an everyday kind of way. it would be great to see nancy interact with joyce. but i’d also love to see both separately get to interact with more characters. Having them in their own little plotline worked in s1 b/c it integrated well into the main plot, but it really, imo, didn’t work in s2, and i hope they don’t just repeat it in s3.

Saturday AM Movie Review: SPIDERMAN: HOMECOMING

.So, let's just get this out of the way...SPIDERMAN: HOMECOMING IS EXCELLENT!

Seriously, it's much, much more than mere "good".

This is easily the Best SPIDERMAN movie EVER!

BEST MCU MOVIE? --- well, let's say it's in the top 3 or 4 but for many, it'll be the favorite.

It's literally re-watchable. Many, many times over.

I'm nearly 30hrs from a pre-screening ( the movie opens July 7th) and I'm just buzzing for the chance to see it again. That's a big deal cuz as a 40-something comic fan who has seen MANY COMICBOOK, SUPERHERO MOVIES -- I've found myself extremely jaded over the last few years. Special effects have given us so many possibilities that previously only comic books and animated productions could visualize. Imaginative new worlds and ideas that were the exclusive province of truly gifted animators, writers, and/or comic artists are now easily presented for the masses via a living, 3D cinematic expressions in movies and a rising number of TV shows.

But something has happened.

I noticed it when I went to a Licensing Executives-only screening of Peter Jackson's KING KONG (many years ago--- God, I'm getting old) and that was this emptiness. By emptiness, I mean....this lack of spark, personality, and/or life. Think Big Trouble in Little China, GHOSTBUSTERS (the original) and the original Superman. Those films have a personality and I remember watching that kick-ass foot catch by Jackson's Kong thinking "WOW - this wouldn't have happened with the 1970's or 30's version of Kong". On the other hand, I left that screening thinking the plot was contrived and characters were lame. It had the technical wizardry but little heart.

I think WB / DC COMICS DCEU is the modern day example of this. Clearly, Snyder's Superman is displaying his powers in ways that had never been seen on screen before. There are shots in MAN OF STEEL and BATMAN V SUPERMAN that are lifted straight from the comic books. That said, both of those movies have storylines and acting that are so...lukewarm (if not, straight juvenile) that the franchise is just getting decimated by Marvel Studios despite DC/WB having a damn near 30 years headstart on Marvel with successful film adaptations (Donner Superman and Burton's Batman) and the fact that Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman are the most popular superhero characters globally by a wide margin  

SPIDERMAN HOMECOMING could have fallen under the weight of franchise fatigue (this is the 7th Spiderman film in 17 years) and/or just the behemoth that Marvel has wrought on the global box office and yet this film does not suffer from the things that afflict so many effects-heavy cinematic spectacles. This film has so much charm and personality that it's just...amazing! A lot of the reason for that is the story and the focus on a YOUNG PETER PARKER. Another reason for that is for one of the most diverse and accurate portrayals of high school --- ever.

Now A LOT has been made about the diverse cast in this movie and it should never be a shock to fans of Saturday AM how many people in the GEEK space bring negative, bigoted views to comics and anime. To be clear, SPIDERMAN's cast is incredibly charming from top to bottom. Tom Holland's Peter Parker has a Queens accent, loves Legos, and has the perfect wide-eyed enthusiasm. I am in for this kid big-time. He has so much charm and earnestness and he's not trying to 'play the nerd' ala Maguire or be the lonely heartthrob ala Garfield. There are two scenes that really stand out to me - one when Peter screws up on the Ferry (from the trailers, great scene folks) and then another during his first actual moment with the Vulture (it's in a car and it will shock you) and his simple reactions to both moments are so well-acted and so perfectly rendered to the story that for me it cemented the idea that HOLLAND IS THE PERFECT SPIDERMAN!

His class/ school, however, is where the film truly shines. Laura Harrier plays Liz, Spiderman's crush while the famous Zendaya plays a character sure to pop up in future films named Michelle. That there are two female leads and they are both women of color is some Saturday AM level stuff! I mean it. The same arguments I've had about having a minority main character in a manga and the refrain (laughably from other minorities at that) "it would just be forced to add a person of color" as if it's NOT forced to add in white/ European looking characters into Japanese society or future worlds (ala Attack on Titan). I can only imagine that some Sony exec tried to pull the same stunt -- "Hey, you can't have two women in Spiderman that he likes or hangs out with be black!!!" As if Queens, NY is an all-white town. Now, not everyone works. I will say that Flash Thompson played by Tony Revolori seems miscast for reasons other than his skin color -- the lack of menace, the height all conspire to make him a jarring choice for being the well-known bully. That said, the diversity adds so much to this film because it feels REAL, RELATABLE to everyone. From the school principal to the deli owner to the kids in the hallway of Peter's school, seeing so many people of color just adds such texture to the world that Peter inhabits and makes the idea that this is the MCU from the street level surprisingly feel more accurate than Marvel's Netflix shows.

This point, is brought home by the gym teacher played by a hilariously deadpan, Hannibal Burres, adds some great comedy when he suggests the Captain America school videos (which has a great payoff later in the film) is inappropriate because he's probably a "war criminal, now" (thanks, CIVIL WAR). But this diversity message really applies to two characters who are CRUCIAL to the success of this new Spiderman film and series. First up, the VULTURE.

Now, I won't ruin the twist to this film but not only is it a solid one but it really sells the whole idea of this version of the B-grade Spiderman villain. From the first frame of the film, we learn what life is really like for the hard working folks in a THOR, IRON MAN led-MCU and how that may affect a potential villain like the Vulture. Keep in mind, we just elected TRUMP in the US -- so the idea of the people feeling desperate enough to do something crazy is something we should all be able to relate to. And that's where Michal Keaton's character really shines. His actions are logical and while he's the bad guy - you can see how different his life could have gone had he gotten luckier in life -- just like our little Peter Parker.

Likewise, his redesign is AWESOME! I genuinely loved this look. It was creative in its' associations with the Vulture motif while also being synonymous with this world of the MCU. You could see how it could be terrifying in its' own right. I've seen a few reviews where folks have lamented some of the action scenes and while I disagree wholeheartedly (the Washington monument and Boat Ferry were both spectacular and remind of the classic train scene from Spiderman 2) I DO understand the lack of thrill in the battles between Vulture and Spiderman. At this point, neither has really fought to the death against another super-powered character (Spidey's Civil War romp was like a field trip to Peter -- we come to learn) and thus the battles are perfectly thrilling, intimate affairs rather than spectacle IMO. This is a small film. The world is not at stake and in many ways, that's what makes these more precise action beats so strong.

 Peter is still a nerd. He can't talk to girls and he wants to do the right thing even though those actions usually cause him and his loved one's problems. In fact, his friends are still intrinsically a part of his life (as we all can attest to regarding our own high school lives). Ned (played with such charm by Jacob Batalon) is the breakout star of this film. The young, portly best friend dreams of being Peter's "guy in the chair" and thus gives the film something desperately needed in the world of the MCU. He allows Peter to simply relate to someone with his secret without lazily needing to have it tie into a love triangle between the original trilogies' Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) and the reboot's Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) and the Spiderman persona. That the character is also diverse and clearly brought over from the Miles Morales Spiderman comic (he shares more than a passing resemblance to that series 'best friend', Ganke) is one thing - that he's lovable and funny as hell - is everything to this film.

SPIDERMAN: HOMECOMING is fun, it's FUNNY, and it offers a different view of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that suggests that with CIVIL WAR, the original IRON MAN film and the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY -- Marvel Studios can tell ANY type of superhero story. This is crucial because given the battles between DC, Marvel and many others (c'est la vie, TMNT / Transformers) it means that we don't have to worry that this genre of film will feel stale. Spiderman Homecoming proves you can do funny films with a lot of heart!
