I think hagsfiends deserve to look silly I think that they should have HUGE ear tufts. lutta. I based her markings partially on the species she turns into a lot I love lutta I think she’s so silly. I want to reread the books so badly I love owls I wish the hagsfiends were well written

Lutta's eyes are green-tinted because there's a passage in To Be a King where Hoole sees her next to the ember and notes that they seem to be made from the same stuff.

There was something strange about this owl. Her intensity almost unnerved him, yet she was fascinating. She stirred in him something vaguely familiar. A confusion of feelings. It suddenly dawned on Hoole. She’s not unlike the ember.

hello owl people

i have been entirely gahoolebrained for years and years and recently it's been all i can think about (again) so i figured i'd make a sideblog for ga'hoole and occasionally other animal xenofiction.

i'm a huge fan of the coryn books and legends arc (hagsfiends my beloved) so that'll be mainly what i post about. i occasionally draw and write, you can find a list of my ga'hoole fics here.

Something's been bugging me.

So you know how To be a King had Lutta? Someone that everyone only "knew" about during her adult years?

How did the writer know about her childhood? It can't have it been Lutta herself. And it can't have been Hoole since he didn't know who she was truly

Did Keeth keep notes in her lab about her? If so, why did she include her parents reactions? How did she know how she was feeling to that point of accuracy?

in regards to what happens to the two after the events of to be a king, i honestly think it could go different ways- we have the fact that theo led the surviving hagsfiends to the middle kingdom to mellow them out and turn them into dragon owls, which by default would likely include penryck and ullryck, but i feel like every single hagsfiend following him without question is dependent on the idea that they’re all “dumb” like the narrative tries to portray them (which i don’t agree with 🙄). realistically, some could certainly be fooled or perhaps even realize that it might be too good to be true, but follow theo anyways out of a desire to live in peace (ygryk could certainly be one of the latter). but others would definitely be skeptical and suspicious!

penryck and ullryck are definitely more on the skeptical side to me, maybe even trying to warn others that it’s a trap and convince them not to go. maybe they put aside their differences and work together in one last attempt to stop owls from fully claiming the n’yrthghar, but after all the battles and theo’s actions, hagsfiend numbers have dwindled too low for anything to be done. in that case, it’s possible that they could flee to the s’yrthghar with other hagsfiends who refused to follow theo to try and lay low for the rest of their lives, but eventually are discovered and/or die out to become the restless hagsfiend scrooms that torment owls in the present day 👀

overall there’s really not a happy ending for hagsfiends of the past i feel 😭 however i’m of the firm belief the hagsfiend eggs in book 15 should NOT have been destroyed, but rather the young hagsfiends be raised in a good environment and allowed to coexist with owls and join society, putting the mutual hatred that characterized the past to rest :’) there could have been a better future!!!

#also this is au stuff but i am slowly working on my fic series that expands lutta’s character arc and rewrites the whole ending #and penryck and ullryck just might be relevant as allies to a certain final creation of kreeth’s 👀 #anyway thanks again for the asks and i’m glad you enjoy my thoughts about these guys!!! >:)
