The Empire Strikes Back (1980, Irvin Kershner)
20/03/2024
The Empire Strikes Back, also know as Star Wars: Episode V or Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back, is a 1980 film directed by Irvin Kershner. Sequel to Star Wars, it is the second film in order of production (fifth in order of internal chronology of the series) of the science fiction saga of the same name created by George Lucas set three years after the events told in Star Wars and is the second act of the original trilogy.
The Galactic Empire, under the leadership of the evil Darth Vader, is looking for Luke Skywalker and the forces of the Rebel Alliance. While Luke's friends, Han Solo and Leia Organa, are busy fleeting the Imperial threat, the young hero is sent by Obi-Wan Kenobi to the old Jedi Master Yoda, in order to complete his training.
The film, in which Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, Alec Guinness, Anthony Daniels and Frank Oz took part, was produced independently by Lucas himself, without the influence of a film studio, and had a troubled production, plagued by delays, disagreements within the crew and unusability of the sets. Received lukewarmly by critics, alienated by the abrupt change in atmosphere of the film compared to its predecessor, The Empire Strikes Back won two Oscars, becoming a cultural phenomenon over the years and is today considered the best film in the saga and one of the best science fiction films ever realized. Adjusted for inflation, the film is the twelfth on the list of the highest grossing films of all time in the United States of America and Canada, having managed to sell more than 98 million tickets in the two countries.

One Hundred and One Dalmatians is a 1961 American animated adventure comedy film produced by Walt Disney Productions and based on the 1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians by Dodie Smith. Directed by Clyde Geronimi, Hamilton Luske, and Wolfgang Reitherman, it was Disney's 17th animated feature film. The film tells the story of a litter of Dalmatian puppies who are kidnapped by the villainous Cruella de Vil ("deVille"), who wants to use their fur to make into coats. Their parents, Pongo and Perdita, set out to save their children from Cruella, in the process rescuing 84 additional puppies that were bought in pet shops, bringing the total of Dalmatians to 101.
The film was originally released in theaters on January 25, 1961, and was a box office success, pulling the studio out of the financial slump caused by Sleeping Beauty, a costlier production released two years prior. Aside from its box office revenue, its commercial success was due to the employment of inexpensive animation techniques—such as using xerography during the process of inking and painting traditional animation cels—that kept production costs down. Disney would later release a live-action adaptation named 101 Dalmatians in 1996 and its sequel, 102 Dalmatians in 2000. A direct to video animated sequel to the 1961 film named 101 Dalmatians II: Patch's London Adventure was released in 2003. A live-action spin-off/prequel called Cruella directed by Craig Gillespie is scheduled to be released on May 28, 2021.
One Hundred and One Dalmatians was first released in theaters on January 25, 1961. The film was re-released theatrically in 1969, 1979, 1985, and 1991. The 1991 reissue was the 20th highest-grossing film of the year for domestic earnings.
One Hundred and One Dalmatians was first released on VHS on April 10, 1992, as part of the Walt Disney Classics video series. By June 1992, it had sold 11.1 million copies. At the time, it was the sixth best-selling video of all time. It was re-released on March 9, 1999, as part of the Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection video series. Due to technical issues, it was later released on LaserDisc and was delayed numerous times before its release on DVD. The film was re-released on VHS, and for the first time on DVD, in December 1999, as a Walt Disney Limited Issue for a limited 60-day time period before going into moratorium. A two-disc Platinum Edition DVD was released on March 4, 2008. It was released on Blu-ray Disc in the United Kingdom on September 3, 2012. A Diamond Edition Blu-ray of the film was released in North America on February 10, 2015. A Limited Edition from Disney Movie Club was released on Blu-ray and DVD combo on November 6, 2018. Then it was re-released on HD digital download and Blu-ray on September 24, 2019 as part of the Walt Disney Signature Collection.
During its initial theatrical run, the film grossed $14 million in the United States and Canada, which generated $6.2 million in distributor rentals. It was also the most popular film of the year in France, with admissions of 14.7 million ranking tenth on their all-time list.
The film was re-released in 1969, where it earned $15 million. In its 1979 theatrical re-release, it grossed $19 million, and in 1985, the film grossed $32 million. During its fourth re-release in 1991, it grossed $60.8 million.
Prior to 1995, the film had grossed $86 million overseas. In 1995, it grossed $71 million overseas bringing its international total to $157 million. The film's total domestic lifetime gross is $145 million, and its total worldwide gross is $303 million. Adjusted for inflation, and incorporating subsequent releases, the film has a lifetime gross of $900.3 million.
In its initial release, the film received critical acclaim from critics, many of whom hailed it as the studio's best release since Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) and the closest to a real "Disney" film in many years. Howard Thompson of The New York Times wrote, "While the story moves steadily toward a stark, melodramatic "chase" climax, it remains enclosed in a typical Disney frame of warm family love, human and canine". However, he later opined that the "[s]ongs are scarce, too. A few more would have braced the final starkness". Variety claimed that "While not as indelibly enchanting or inspired as some of the studio's most unforgettable animated endeavors, this is nonetheless a painstaking creative effort". Time praised the film as "the wittiest, most charming, least pretentious cartoon feature Walt Disney has ever made". Harrison's Reports felt all children and adults will be "highly entertained by Walt Disney's latest, a semi-sophisticated, laugh-provoking, all cartoon, feature-lengther in Technicolor." Dodie Smith also enjoyed the film where she particularly praised the animation and backgrounds of the film.
Contemporary reviews have remained positive. Reviewing the film during its 1991 re-release, Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times, while giving the film three stars out of four, asserted that "it's an uneven film, with moments of inspiration in a fairly conventional tale of kidnapping and rescue. This is not one of the great Disney classics - it's not in the same league with Snow White or Pinocchio - but it's passable fun, and will entertain its target family audiences." Chicago Tribune film critic Gene Siskel, in his 1991 review, also gave the film three stars out of four. Ralph Novak of People wrote "What it lacks in romantic extravagance and plush spectacle, this 1961 Disney film makes up for in quiet charm and subtlety. In fact, if any movie with dogs, cats and horses who talk can be said to belong in the realm of realistic drama, this is it". However, the film did receive a few negative reviews. In 2011, Craig Berman of MSNBC ranked it and its 1996 remake as two of the worst children's films of all time, saying that, "The plot itself is a bit nutty. Making a coat out of dogs? Who does that? But worse than Cruella de Vil's fashion sense is the fact that your children will definitely start asking for a Dalmatian of their own for their next birthday".
The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported the film received an approval rating of 98% based on 49 reviews with an average score of 8.1/10. The website's critical consensus reads, "With plenty of pooches and a memorable villain (Cruella De Vil), this is one of Disney's most enduring, entertaining animated films".
Cruella de Vil ranked 39th on AFI's list of "100 Years...100 Heroes and Villains".

Charlie’s Angels’ director says people don’t want assertive female leads?!  Maleficent begs to differ!
To everyone who was calling Maleficent: Mistress of Evil a flop:
As of November 17, 2019, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil has grossed $105.7 million in the United States and Canada, and $354.2 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $459.9 million.
And that’s with a budget of 185 million.  That means right now Maleficent Mistress of Evil has doubled it’s cost to produce with money to spare and it is still playing in theatres.
Why do I bring this up?   Well, because Elizabeth Banks (Director of Charlie’s Angels’ newest reboot) is claiming people aren’t interested in action stories with a female protagonist.
https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2019W46/
Let’s make a comparison.  Currently both Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Charlie’s Angels are in the theatre at the same time.  Maleficent has been playing in theatres for over a month now.  Charlie’s Angels has only been in theatres for a few days.
Here’s the difference.
Maleficent’s opening weekend had Maleficent steal the number 1 spot from Joker, which had been dominating the box office.   Though it under performed in the US Maleficent easily earned back its’ budget in Europe and went on to become the highest earning fantasy film in Russia.  (Yeah, that one is surprising, isn’t it?)
Charlie’s Angel’s opening weekend, with a budget of a mere 50 million has only earned 8 million domestically in its opening weekend.  That’s not even 1/5 its’ original budget.   And it was (in its’ opening week) already at the third spot on the box office charts, while Maleficent is still lingering between the 7th to 9th place in the top ten films currently playing, despite currently only being in about two thousand theatres. (That’s actually very few).
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil even out earned Terminator: Dark Fate, which (though a more recent release) dropped to the eleventh spot on the film listings, under Maleficent.
So, no, Lizzy, it’s not that people don’t want strong women.  And frankly screw you for claiming people only watched Wonder Woman because it came out before Justice League.  I LIKE Wonder Woman!  I don’t like Justice League.  I was not even that interested in Justice League.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is not a great film.  Hell, it’s kind of a guilty pleasure.  It has a LOT of flaws.  The tone is all over the place and the ending is like half Disney and half Game of Thrones in a very improbable way.  But, it’s weirdly enjoyable and no one blames “misogynists” for it under performing opening weekend yet somehow beating Terminator and now Charlie’s Angels.
It’s not our fault the dark faery vs. Cat Woman is more interesting than a version of Charlie’s Angels created by someone who bashed the original TV show and earlier films.
Hail to the queen!

flixvision movies and series
A film series or movie series (also known as a film franchise or movie franchise) is a collection of related films that are released in a series and share the same fictional universe.
This article explains what a film series is and provides a few examples. A list of the most popular film series and franchises in the United States and Canada appears in the body.
The Three Colours series, for example, was designed as a multi-picture project from the start, but in most cases, the success of the first film motivates the production of additional films. Individual sequels are rather common, although they are not always popular enough to generate additional chapters.
Even when adjusted for inflation, the Marvel Cinematic Universe's 26 films (as of 2021) are the highest-grossing film series, surpassing J. K. Rowling's Wizarding World (10 films), Star Wars (11 films), Ian Fleming's James Bond (25 films), and J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth (6 films).
With so many various streaming services available nowadays, deciding on the best one might be difficult. Each one has its own set of TV episodes and movies, as well as a distinct interface, changing video streaming quality, and, of course, a price tag that can range from free to hundreds of dollars each year. When it comes to determining which streaming platform is best for you, a little bit of research can go a long way.
Netflix is a streaming service that makes award-winning TV series, movies, animation, documentaries, and other content available on thousands of internet-connected devices.
For one modest monthly fee, you may watch as much as you want, whenever you want, without ever seeing an ad. Every week, new TV episodes and movies are introduced, so there's always something new to explore!

Tom Cruise Told Annabelle Wallis No One Is Allowed To Run With Him On Screen
Tom Cruise is one of the A-list actors of Hollywood. His name is enough to draw all the attention of his fans. Recently, one of his co-stars, Annabelle Wallis, says that Cruise refused to run with her on-screen in one movie. Why did Tom Cruise say that to her, what did he mean, and did she finally get the chance to run with him on screen? These are questions that might be bothering you. In this article, we will try to find the reason for his refusal and also how did the actress react after that. So let’s begin the article!
During the production of a movie in 2017, Tom Cruise told his co-star Annabelle Wallis that no one is allowed to run with him on screen. Tom Cruise Mapother IV is an American producer and actor. He received three Golden Globe Awards and three nominations for Academy Awards. He is one of the highest-paid actors in the world, with a net worth of $570 million in 2020. His film grossed over $4 billion in North America and more than $10.1 billion worldwide.
Tom Cruise started his career in the 1980s. His first film was a comedy film Risky Business in 1986. Then he did his second movie in 1986, Top Gun, and after that, his career graph has only gone up. He became one of the most commercially successful actors of Hollywood in the 1990s and starred in several big-budget projects. He is also associated with different social programs. However, he has faced many controversies, including his Church-affiliated criticisms of antidepressant drugs and psychiatry. He also faced criticism for promoting Scientology in Europe as a religion.
Tom Cruise and Annabelle Wallis met on the set of The Mummy in 2017. The Mummy is an American adventure-action film written by David Koepp, Dylan Kussman, and Christopher McQuarrie; and directed by Alex Kurtzman. The film was released on 9th June 2017. The movie got negative reviews from critics but did a business of $410 million worldwide.
Cruise has a huge fanbase, who religiously follow all his moves. All his films might not do well at the box office, but people’s fascination with him does not wane. Tom’s fans love to know and hear about the mysterious private life of the star, and the internet is continuously hunting around for such information. They want to know everything that is happening around Cruise. Whether it is about his upcoming project, his involvement with new religion Scientology, his on-set demands, his interaction with other casts and crew, or even his reaction on some matter, fans follow all of it.  Hence, his refusal of Wallis is an excellent deal among his fanbase. During the production of The Mummy, Annabelle was cast opposite Tom Cruise. She shared with Cruise that she wanted to run with him on-screen, on which Tom replied that nobody runs with him on-screen. She took it as a challenge and said to the actor that she is a good runner.
Annabelle Frances Wallis is a British actress. She is known for several incredible movies and series like The Tudors, Peaky Blinders, Annabelle, and supernatural adventure film The Mummy. She started her career from a Bollywood film in 2005 titled Dil Jo Bhi Kahey; the film, though did not perform well in the box office. After that she did a lot of other movies, some did great, others did not. Wallis’s new movie The Silencing is a movie based on a reformed hunter living in a wildlife sanctuary. The actress said she knew that her career was going to take a big turn, and she needed to be brave then. Wallis noted that there are a lot of people who thought she could not do an American accent, and she took that as a challenge, which only encouraged her. She is an experimental actress; she always tries to bend her genre. Wallis finds it very special and exciting. That is why, when Tom Cruise said to her that nobody runs on-screen, she tried to prove herself that maybe nobody did it before, but that does not mean she also can not run with him. Wallis shared that she used to time her treadmill such that when Cruise would walk in the gym, he could see her running. And that helped her to convince Tom to shoot the running sequence with him. The approval from him to run on-screen, she described that as better than winning an Oscar.
The Mummy collected $80.2 million in Canada and the United States and earned around $410 million worldwide. The film was released along with two films, It Comes at Night and Megan Leavey in North America. However, the film did not do well in the box office. It received negative critical reviews and also held an approval rating of 16% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 307 reviews, with an average rating of 4.8/10. According to audience polls by CinemaScore, the film got  “B-” on a scale of A+ to F. David Ehrlich, a critic of IndieWire gave the film D- and also called it the worst Cruise’s movie.
Such news about Cruise would give an idea of his bizarre personality quirks. And the refusal comment would fuel the anti-Cruise fire. However, Wallis and Tom have an excellent professional relationship, and both do not have any wrong impression of each other.

Omar Sharif & Julie Christie in Dr. Zhivago (1965)
Doctor Zhivago (Italian: Il dottor Zivago) is a 1965 British-Italian epic romantic drama film directed by David Lean. It is set in Russia between the years prior to World War I and the Russian Civil War of 1917–1922, and is based on the Boris Pasternak novel of the same name. While immensely popular in the West, the book was banned in the Soviet Union for decades. For this reason, the film could not be made in the Soviet Union and was instead filmed mostly in Spain.
The film stars Omar Sharif in the title role as Yuri Zhivago, a married physician whose life is irreversibly altered by the Russian Revolution and subsequent Civil War, and Julie Christie as his married love interest Lara Antipova. The supporting cast includes Geraldine Chaplin, Rod Steiger, Alec Guinness, Tom Courtenay, Ralph Richardson, Siobhán McKenna and Rita Tushingham.
Contemporary critics were generally disappointed, complaining of its length at over three hours, and claiming that it trivialized history, but acknowledging the intensity of the love story and the film's treatment of human themes. Over time, however, the film's reputation has improved greatly. At the 38th Academy Awards, Doctor Zhivago won five Oscars: Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design; it was nominated for five others (including Best Picture and Best Director), but lost four of these five to The Sound of Music. It also won five awards at the 23rd Golden Globe Awards including Best Motion Picture - Drama and Best Actor - Motion Picture Drama for Sharif.
As of 2016, it is the eighth highest-grossing film of all time in the United States and Canada, adjusted for ticket-price inflation. It was ranked by the American Film Institute in 1998 as the 39th greatest film on their 100 Years..100 Movies list and by the British Film Institute the following year as the 27th greatest British film of all time.

Mrs. Doubtfire (1993, Chris Columbus)
13/12/2023
Mrs. Doubtfire is a 1993 comedy-drama film directed by Chris Columbus, loosely based on the 1987 novel Madame Doubtfire by Anne Fine.
The film, starring Robin Williams, Sally Field and Pierce Brosnan, follows a recently divorced actor who disguises himself as a housekeeper so he can interact with his children.
The film won the Academy Award for Best Makeup and two Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.
Although the film received mixed reviews upon release, its reception and popularity improved considerably, placing 67th on the American Film Institute's AFI's 100 Years... 100 Laughs list.
Daniel Hillard is a voice actor with an extraordinary talent for changing voices who works and lives in San Francisco, but who quit after an argument with his boss. Miranda, Daniel's wife, who returned home early thanks to a phone call from her neighbor who was exasperated with the situation that had arisen, argues furiously with her husband, accusing him of being immature and unreliable and ending up asking him for her divorce.
One Saturday evening, coming to Daniel's house to pick up her children, Miranda informs her ex-husband of her intention to hire a housekeeper.
During Miranda's birthday dinner, blinded by jealousy and alcohol, Daniel sneaks into the kitchen and fills Stu's plate with chili pepper, who is allergic to the ingredient. Daniel, dressed as Mrs. Doubtfire, realizing the trouble he has caused, rushes to the aid of his rival, but when he practices the Heimlich maneuver to make the morsel come out, the mask comes off revealing his true face.
Blake Lively did not pass the audition for the role of Natalie Hillard, which later went to Mara Wilson. Robin Williams was chosen by Anne Fine herself for the role of Mrs Doubtfire, while Tim Allen was proposed for both the role of the housekeeper and that of Stu, but he rejected both parts.
The producers wanted the parents to eventually get back together and remarry, but Robin Williams, Sally Field and Chris Columbus thought this ending would be too unrealistic and would give false hope to children of divorced parents.
The film was shot in San Francisco, Oakland, Redwood City and San Ramon between March 22 and July 1, 1993.
The film was released in cinemas in the United States on November 24, 1993, and in Italy on February 11, 1994.
Mrs. Doubtfire earned $219,195,243 in the United States and Canada and $222,090,952 in other countries, for a worldwide total of $441,286,195, making it 20th Century Fox's highest-grossing film internationally at era and the second highest-grossing film of 1993, behind only Jurassic Park.

Marvel's New Rereleases Aren't About The Fans - They're About Box Office
Tumblr media
Marvel's recent rereleases aren't about the fans - they're all about the box office. This year's Avengers: Endgame made cinematic history - and not just because it became the highest-grossing movie of all time. It also marked the first time Marvel Studios rereleased one of their films in the box office, with additional footage - a tribute to the late, great Stan Lee, a deleted scene featuring Professor Hulk, and a clip from Spider-Man: Far From Home.
It's beginning to look as though Avengers: Endgame may have started a trend, because Spider-Man: Far From Home is also getting a rerelease. The extended version of the film will start playing in theaters across the United States and Canada starting August 29, and will stay in theaters over Labor Day weekend. The new footage consists of a "never-before-seen action sequence," and will be available to see in IMAX at select locations.
Related: The Winners And Losers Of The 2019 Summer Box Office
Rereleases like these are aimed at only the most hardcore fans, who'll happily cash out to watch absolutely any extra features. But are they really being treated by this - or are Disney and Sony instead taking fans for granted?
Tumblr media
The Avengers: Endgame rerelease was disappointing. The deleted scene featuring the Hulk was unfinished, with low quality CGI; the Hulk's mouth didn't move at all when Mark Ruffalo said his lines, and at one point he pulled out a mobile phone that was just a gray, rectangular block. Making matters worse, it was easy to see why this particular deleted scene was cut, because it didn't add anything at all to the story. The Spider-Man: Far From Home clip was less than a minute in length, and almost all of it had been shown in the trailers and TV spots. Only the Stan Lee tribute was worthwhile, and even that consisted entirely of footage Marvel Studios had used before.
All indications are that Spider-Man: Far From Home will be underwhelming as well. Sony has confirmed that the film will feature four minutes of new footage, including a "never-before-seen action sequence." It's reasonable to assume that this is a montage that director Jon Watts has described as "Peter's To-Do List", which was all set before the wall-crawler headed out on his European vacation. It includes a number of scenes from the trailers, such as Peter Parker heading to Delmar's Deli, pawning his Star Wars toys for cash, picking up his passport, and stopping some crooks. Watts had already confirmed that all this footage was pretty much complete, but had been cut because it distracted from the film's themes.
In both cases, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have followed the same pattern. They've chosen to rerelease the films towards the end of their theatrical runs, with some cheap extras. Contrast this with James Cameron's Avatar rerelease, for example; it came eight months after its theatrical debut, and over four months after its release on DVD and Blu-ray. It featured nine minutes of additional footage, with Cameron spending $1 million on each minute in order to complete the scenes' CGI, and the Avatar rerelease remained in cinemas for 12 weeks. The rereleases of both Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home look set to be underwhelming in comparison.

Tumblr media
Given neither Marvel Studios nor Sony Pictures seem to be putting much effort into these rereleases, why are they happening? The answer is less to do with wanting to please the fans, than it is to do with performing well at the box office. It all started with Marvel's ambition to get in the history books with Avengers: Endgame. The studio was determined to beat Avatar's global record, and make their film the highest-grossing movie of all-time. The irony is that this is quite an arbitrary target; that record doesn't take inflation into account, and Marvel won't hold it for long anyway. Disney is sure to rerelease Avatar ahead of its sequel, and the final gap is so narrow that it will certainly claim the crown back.
Meanwhile, Sony's motives are just as financially-driven for Spider-Man: Far From Home. In this case, the film is already the highest-grossing Spider-Man film to-date, but Sony is aiming at a domestic accomplishment. They want this to be the first Spider-Man movie to break $400 million at the domestic box office. That's why Spider-Man: Far From Home is just being rereleased in the United States, not overseas. Sony may be a separate company, but they're following Marvel's pattern, and for almost exactly the same reason.
Tumblr media
The truth is that any studio only rereleases a film if they think it will be a profitable decision. The issue, however, is whether or not the rerelease can also be justified in creative terms. That was undeniably the case with Avatar, where nine minutes of expensive additional footage gave viewers a real incentive to turn up. That wasn't the case with Avengers: Endgame, and it's unlikely to be true with Spider-Man: Far From Home as well. Both Marvel and Sony are risking taking advantage of their fan bases, and that's a dangerous mistake to make.
It's entirely possible rereleases will become the norm rather than the exception in the superhero genre going forward; they appear to be a successful strategy, and both Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures look set to achieve their respective goals thanks to these rereleases. However, if studios are indeed going to embrace rereleases to a greater degree than before, they need to take a much more thoughtful approach. They don't necessarily need to try to beat James Cameron's target, with each minute costing $1 million, but they do need to ensure they have quality material to make the rereleases worth it. Perhaps that will require planning the rereleases in advance, deliberately holding certain content back; or else carefully going through deleted scenes and figuring out what could be used. Anything else risks damaging the relationship between the studios and their fans; and even Marvel Studios can't afford to take their fan base for granted.

With Jacob Aere
Cleveland hosting the 2019 MLB All-Star Game is positively impacting the city's economy. As reported by Fox 8 Cleveland, the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission estimates All-Star Week will generate $65 million in revenue for Cleveland businesses, which includes packed restaurants, sports bars, hotels, and visitors checking out other attractions like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  MLB's Play Ball Park drew big crowds to the Huntington Convention Center over the weekend. Restaurants are bringing in extra staff, which will also benefit workers who will earn extra tips this week. 2,000 media members are in town giving Cleveland worldwide attention. The huge amount of money being spent in Cleveland, also means the city cashes in with extra tax money which can be used for city improvements, like roads, public transport, and community service programs. Stores like the Cleveland Clothing Company on Euclid Avenue are packed more than usual. "It's been great for the community and the city," manager Desiree Moar told Fox8. Cleveland will once again be in the national spotlight when the city hosts the NFL Draft in 2021, and the NBA All Star Game in 2022.
BofA launches ASG-tied rewards program. As noted by Cynopsis, ahead of the MLB All-Star Game in Cleveland, longtime MLB sponsor Bank of America launched a rewards program tied to ASG festivities. Looking to leverage the drama of extra innings, the “Extra Rewards” promotion offers BofA customers discounts on licensed merchandise at MLB.com, along with some exclusive merchandise. TV ads will support the program, primarily on MLB asset media and in markets where BofA has RSN inventory on local MLB telecasts. Tags supporting the promo will also be read as extra-inning games occur, along with digital and social media. BofA CMO Meredith Verdone said the promotion is designed to enhance customer relevancy and engagement. “The thing we love about the association with extra innings is that there’s always an exciting, emotional ending,” she added. This All-Star Game is especially key to BofA, since it is just entering the Ohio market with retail banking. BofA, an MLB sponsor since 2004, also has deals with the Astros, Cardinals, Dodgers, Giants, Orioles, Red Sox, and Yankees.
The U.S. women's national team beat the Netherlands on Sunday to defend their title as reigning World Cup champions. When they get back home, they've got a different battle awaiting – their legal fight for equal pay and treatment. In March, the 28 members of the 2015 World Cup-winning team -- including current national team stars Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, and Carli Lloyd -- filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Soccer Federation alleging gender discrimination in their treatment versus how the governing body treats the men's team. "The U.S. women’s soccer team does not need to be the best in the world in order to earn equal pay. The point of non-discrimination law is that employees doing similar work should be paid equally," Columbia Law School’s Suzanne B. Goldberg told ABC News. The lawsuit also cites the denial of "at least equal playing, training, and travel conditions; and equal promotion of their games." Added Goldberg, “In this instance, where the women's team is outplaying the men's team, there is an argument that they should be paid more than their male counterparts," she said. A U.S. Soccer spokesperson confirmed that the women's team and the federation tentatively agreed to mediation after the World Cup
USWNT jersey sales have outpaced all other U.S. soccer jerseys, including those of the men's team, according to statistics from Nike and Fanatics. As reported by ESPN, Nike said in its earnings report that the women's 2019 stadium home jersey is now the No. 1-selling soccer jersey, men's or women's, ever sold on Nike.com in one season. Fanatics said this is the top-selling U.S. Soccer national team, men's or women's, of all time. "It's hard to overstate how important this year has been to the evolution of the women's offense at Nike," president and CEO Mark Parker said. The USWNT’s success has helped drive business for Nike even past the jersey, which retails for $90. Parker said the energy around the World Cup, with nearly two-thirds of the teams wearing Nike kits and half the players wearing Nike boots, has pushed the company to the No. 1 position in market share for bras this quarter in North America for the first time in the company's history. That stat is impressive given the exposure Nike gained in 1999, when Brandi Chastain scored the winning goal against China in a shootout and tore off her jersey, revealing her sports bra – one of the most iconic moments in women's sports history.
While it’s long been green, this year Wimbledon is seriously ramping up its sustainability initiatives. Week Two of Wimbledon is underway at the All England Club, and one sight that hasn’t been seen at this year's tournament is "players discarding the plastic cover from a freshly strung racket." As the Guardian noted, following a sustainability review, the "removal of plastic bags from the player racket stringing operation means there will be 4,500 fewer plastic bags used" this year. Wimbledon sponsor Evian also launched “its first 100% recycled and 100% recyclable water bottle at this year’s championships." Meanwhile, longtime sponsor Rolex ran a full-page ad in the New York Times touting its standing as the official jeweler of Wimbledon: "140 Years of Memorable Performances Ensure Centre Court Will Remain Tennis's Ultimate Stage." And timeless tennis superstar Roger Federer has been reveling in a different kind of green: Federer topped Forbes’ list of 2018 athlete endorsement income, at $65 million besting LeBron James ($52 million), Cristiano Ronaldo ($47 million), Tiger Woods, and Steph Curry (tied at $42 million)
IMG is close to signing a ten-year deal worth $1 billion for betting streaming and data rights to the ATP Tour. According to SportBusiness, the partnership being discussed between global agency IMG and ATP Media – the tour’s commercial arm – will reportedly cover the nine ATP Masters 100 tournaments, the Tour 500 series, and a number of the 250 series events. If successful, the deal would add to the agency's growing portfolio of contracts for IMG Arena, its sports betting and content arm. The division, launched in November, 2018, is already a data partner for golf’s PGA Tour and European Tour, and looking at capitalizing on new U.S. sports wagering laws. IMG's involvement in tennis is already significant. The agency has representatives on the ATP board, reps elite players including Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka, and owns and operates ATP tournaments including the Miami Open and Rio Open. If confirmed, this will be the biggest rights deal in tennis history.
Major League Soccer will host a new MLS All-Star Skills Challenge presented by Target at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports on July 30. The first-time event takes place during the MLS All-Star break, allowing fans to watch on MLSsoccer.com and the MLS App and streamed live in English, Spanish, and French across the digital platforms of all five MLS domestic media partners – ESPN, FOX, and Univision in the U.S., TSN and TVA Sports in Canada – as well as in more than 170 countries around the world through MLS’ international media partners. Points in each of the competitive skills will be earned based on accuracy, as well as style and include: touch and volley; shooting; and passing. The 2019 MLS All-Star Game Presented by Target will take place in Orlando on Wednesday, July 31 at Orlando City Stadium, which holds close to 26,000 fans. The festivities join the city’s rich tradition of hosting mega events, including two annual college football bowl games, PGA Tour tourneys, and the annual Pop Warner Super Bowl and cheer national championships.
Universal Tennis releases an app to makes tennis more available to the masses. According to PR Newswire, the UTR app helps to connect the tennis community as it helps to rank the skill level of players across the globe. At the core of the Universal Tennis platform is the Universal Tennis Rating, the global gold standard for measuring tennis skill across age, gender, and geography. UTR and the Universal Tennis platform have been adopted by players, coaches, organizers, academies, clubs, and colleges worldwide to facilitate more connectivity and better competition across the tennis landscape. The new UTR app is free for all tennis players of any age and skill level. In the United States, all USTA and college players already have a rating and profile on UTR, and any player can create their own profile. To celebrate the app’s launch, Universal Tennis will raffle tennis gear for those who post scores, whether professional or amateur.
Marvel joins the esports world thanks to superheroes. According to Forbes, Team Liquid has announced a new partnership with Marvel that will see its players wear Avengers-inspired jerseys at certain special events. The year-long contract includes inspired jerseys from Captain America, Iron Man, Avengers Endgame, and a collaborative T-shirt between the two parties. The first look at the new gear was in the team’s Captain America jerseys at the EU vs NA Rift Rivals League of Legends competition taking place in Los Angeles last weekend. As Avengers Endgame nearly overtook Avatar as the highest-grossing film of all time, Marvel is now expanding its influence into the world of gaming and further building its empire while Team Liquid will garner a new slew of fans.
The MLB All Star Game auctions off Louisville Slugger and Fender guitars for charity. This year’s All-Star game is taking place in Cleveland, Ohio, and will pay tribute to the home of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. According to Yahoo! Finance, the location of the All-Star Week makes for an ideal partnership between two manufacturers that are world leaders in their respective areas: Louisville Slugger baseball bats and Fender musical instruments. To celebrate the rock n’ roll history of the city, MLB partnered with the two companies to create a public exhibit featuring 31 pairs of artist-painted Fender Stratocasters and Louisville Slugger baseball bats, one for each MLB team and one for the Baseball Hall of Fame. These bats and guitars will be displayed through July 9 at Cleveland Public Square’s Midsummer Village and will later be auctioned off for charity, with funds raised by MLB Charities to be used for instrument purchases and music program learning resources.

Google unveils top searches of 2019
https://newsource-embed-prd.ns.cnn.com/videos/newsource-video-embed.js
NEW YORK — In 2019, people across the country turned to Google for all the answers. Now, Google has unveiled its 2019 Year In Search, a look at the top trending searches of the year.
From the viral sensation of Lil Nas X’s song “Old Town Road” to Billy Porter’s extravagant red carpet ensembles, the year’s most popular searches have been laid out for all to see, giving us a glimpse of what America really wants to know.
The list includes everything from news and entertainment to the classic, “What is…” query.
As a farewell to the 2010’s the search engine has also provided insights into trending searches across the decade.
Remember the “Pants on the Ground” song? Yeah, neither did we until we saw it on the list.
Below, we’ve laid out the top ten overall searches of the year to refresh your memory, as well as every category in Google’s Year In Search.
1. Disney Plus
The hottest streaming service of the year claimed the top spot in Google searches this year. The concept is by no means revolutionary, but its almost never-ending list of nostalgic and new titles appeals to many.
And don’t forget, Disney Plus gave us the give that keeps on giving — Baby Yoda from “The Mandalorian.”
2. Cameron Boyce
The sudden death of the 20-year-old actor Cameron Boyce struck a chord with many searchers this year.
Boyce was found unresponsive in his California home on July 6. An autopsy confirmed he died in his sleep after a seizure related to epilepsy.
He starred in the Disney Channel show “Jessie” from 2011 to 2015. He also appeared in “Mirrors,” “Eagle Eye” with Shia LaBeouf and “Grown Ups” with Adam Sandler, and in the Disney Channel’s “Descendants.”
3. Nipsey Hussle
Influential rapper Nipsey Hussle was shot and killed in front of his clothing store May 31, sending waves of shock through the rap community.
The rapper had founded his own record label, All Money In, in 2010, according to IMDB. He had also worked with dozens of successful artists, including Kendrick Lamar, Drake, YG, Ty Dolla Sign, Meek Mill and Young Thug.
4. Hurricane Dorian
It’s been a whirlwind year for extreme weather, and Hurricane Dorian was no exception. The storm slammed the Bahamas, United States and Canada in September, killing at least 30 people in the Bahamas.
Numerous cities up the coast declared states of emergency and issued mandatory evacuations as hurricane-force winds battered the coast. The storm left extensive damage in many places, especially the Bahamas.
5. Antonio Brown
The former NFL player was released from the New England Patriots following accusations by two women of sexual misconduct, including rape. Brown denies the allegations.
The Patriots were the third team to let go of Brown in 2019. Days after being released, he said on Twitter that he “will not be playing in the NFL anymore.”
6. Luke Perry
Former “Beverly Hills 90210” star Luke Perry died March 4 after suffering a massive stroke.
Perry was launched into fame as the wildly popular character Dylan McKay. He also had roles in the hit television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Riverdale,” and appeared in the Quentin Tarantino film, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” which premiered after his death.
7. ‘Avengers: Endgame’
The Disney and Marvel film shot past “Avatar” to become the highest-grossing film ever. The film, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, made more than $2.789 billion worldwide by the end of July.
8. ‘Game of Thrones’
HBO’s “Game of Thrones” released its final season, sending fans into a downward spiral of unmet expectations and withdrawal. Many felt the storylines were rushed and sloppy, while others were just going through it without their beloved show.
9. iPhone 11
iPhone dropped their iPhone 11 and 11 Pro, outfitted with updated cameras and flashy new colors, leaving users to decide whether or not they would upgrade for the minor new features it offers.
10. Jussie Smollett
The “Empire” actor became embroiled in controversy after the actor reported a hate crime attack in January which investigators later concluded had been a false claim meant to boost his public profile.
The City of Chicago later filed a lawsuit against him, seeking to recover more than $130,000 to cover police overtime during the investigation.
