friendship over: 3 ways to keep your bff

2020, i was a grade 10 student in a relatively small school. it was the last year of junior high school and i’d have to say goodbye to my school mates because we’d go separate ways (those were our thoughts then) for the first time in years (most of us knew each other since kindergarten). 

we promised each other to call and chat and meet up as often as possible. it should be easy, right? we’ve been friends for years so we shouldn’t have a hard time keeping in touch.

surprise! it actually was.

the pandemic isn’t something we saw coming. i, for one, thought it would only last for a few months. my classmates and i didn’t think much of it back then; we even cheered at the announcement that there would be no school for sometime because of quarantine but oh how wrong we were.

a few weeks turned into months and before we knew it two years had passed. and during those two years, my contact with my batchmates lessened. until the point that even some of them i don’t really talk to anymore now.

currently, i only talk to three of my batchmates yes i will call them batchmates pls deal with it; of which one is my classmate now and two are my game buddies. well, there’s one who i talk to from time to time but we’ve been busy so recently we haven’t been talking.

so back to the question of how did i maintain my relationship with them this quarantine? what did i do? here are some tips based on my experience.

1) be open with them

friends are supposed to share and talk about things that are happening in their life, right? 

basically anything under the sun! as long as you’re comfy in sharing it with them. i’m not saying that you should tell your friends stuff that you don’t even wanna tell them—it has to be shared because you want to.

through all that sharing and talking, the bond you have only strengthens and grows. it’s important to have people you’re comfy with so that you can confide in each other.

2) be a good listener and responder

sharing and receiving are two different things. which means that you telling and updating them about your life is different from you discovering and taking in what happened to theirs.

when it comes to online conversations you must try to be as expressive as you can because these conversations aren’t the same as real life interactions. 

please please please do not leave them on read on purpose. that basically equates to you just blankly staring at them and looking away if that was a conversation in real life.

now that isn’t nice to do to a friend is it? at least give some sort of reaction or a quick message to let them know your thoughts. they’ll appreciate it, i promise you.

3) get into something new together

last tip, finally! i’ll keep this short.

of course conversing plays a big role in maintaining friendships. which is why i encourage you to get into something new together! be it games, music, or hobbies. this gives you the opportunity to talk more because you have another thing in common with them.

remember that feeling when your favorite artist releases a new song and you get excited? imagine that, then you get to go crazy about it with your friends because they like that artist as well. and you talk about it for hours and days on end until the hype is over.
