Imagine watching Lestat teaching your daughter French.
Tumblr media
“Ma mere,” Lestat said, holding your little girl in his arms, her cheeks a rosy pink, little lips delicately moving to try to form the syllables. What came out only slightly resembled the words that Lestat said. “- est tres belle.” In his voice, the french words sounded magnificent, so lyrical and sweet that it took you a second to translate it in your head, so attracted were you to the tone. He was calling you beautiful. He was teaching your daughter to call you beautiful. “Mon pere,” You said, attempting to teach your little one the language as well, though you did not know it very well. You were learning along with her. “- est amusant.” The noises that came out of your daughter’s mouths were still more on the gurgly, babbling side but she at least could say mere and pere, the two coming out in repetition. Her little hands, so perfect and tiny, were clapping as Lestat let out an amused chuckle, his eyes settling on you. “Tres belle,” He repeated, as your eyes looked upon him with so much love and adoration - which proved to him further that true love never dies, even if the lovers do.

love people who are like "lestat should have worked on himself and his issues before getting with louis the first time" bc 1) correct they both needed work and 2) where exactly is a 18th century born male vampire going to therapy?? FREUD?????

I will think on those moments every night for as long as I go on, and of the chasm that opened under me, the plunge into mortal death that was nearly mine. Claudia gave me that.

Louis, 100 years later: My goal in this interview is to be honest with you and present a nuanced portrait of a complicated situation. I want to be clear, so I’m going to share something very important: Antoinette had a flat ass, and it’s not me who said so. A third party specifically pointed that out. It’s crucial that you know how flat her ass was, so you can have the full context of what happened. I hope you’re writing this down. Your readers should know.

louis, lestat, and their single bed as a motif louis puts into his own story, but refuses to explore, is literally one of the sexiest parts of the show. it speaks volumes about a level of fulfillment and freedom that louis feels by being with lestat that he rarely explicitly comments on when he's relaying his story to daniel, which feels extremely relevant to his overall reluctance to examine the parts of his relationship with lestat that he really enjoyed.
because louis is a character who's hyper aware of how he presents himself. he's lived his entire life projecting a certain masculine, heteronormative image, and he's aware of how deviating from that presentation has implications that impact how people view him - from enjoying the opera, to the presentation of his nails. the fact that he moves in with lestat and neither of them ever put a second bed into any room in the house as a level of plausible deniability is so huge and oversight by so cautious a character, it can only be read as deliberate - especially when the conspicuous lack of a second bed is pointed out to them by both antoinette and a literal police officer. in an existence where you don't sleep in a bed, the bed becomes a symbolic object more so than a practical one. it's louis choosing to deliberately transgress against the societal expectations he lives out when he leaves his house, a bit of presentation that actually amplifies his truth as a gay man living with his partner, rather than masking or hiding himself, like he does for the outside world.

Imagine being Lestat’s soulmate, but almost total opposite.
Tumblr media
“Why do you read these ... books so much?” Lestat said, taking off his jacket with a flourish and laying it down onto the end of the bench that you were lounging on. You pressed the tip of your index finger to the spot that you were just finishing, and looked at him with amusement.
You were the introverted soul out of this couple. You preferred to spend your time in the chateau, to read through the books that he often bought and only read ten pages of before becoming bored and heading out to mentally torment some poor souls. You bettered yourself while he, as he put it, bettered the world by being out in it.
“I’m learning about the stars, Lestat. Since we are so well acquainted, I might as well get to know them,” You said, smiling.
“It’s about time you get your head out of these books and pay attention to more important things, my love. You’ll start to get strange ideas if you keep up with this.” Lestat said, his lower lip jutting out every so slightly. Jealous of a book. Of course he was. Lestat really did become envious of anything that took your attention away from him.
“I’m reading about Leo,” You continued, not letting him get you down. “One of the largest constellations. A magnificent lion. He reminds me of you. I don’t think it’s just the hair.”
“A magnificent lion?” He repeated after you, and didn’t seem opposed to the idea. Instead, you started to crawl along the bench, on his hands and his knees, his form moving much like the animal that you were speaking out. He came in closer, and sunk his teeth, fangs and all, into the book, ripping it from your hand and spat it out onto the cushioned floor. “Perhaps not all of the ideas are bad ones after all...”

LEONARD NIMOY as Lestat de Lioncourt
Paramount acquired the film rights to Anne Rice’s debut novel Interview with the Vampire in 1976. Leonard Nimoy was lobbying to be cast as the story’s charismatic antagonist, Lestat, by the following year. He told the New York Times that he “could create interest” in the film and that “I want that role. I am right for that vampire.” Nimoy went on to star in a Paramount production shortly afterwards when he brought his iconic character Spock back to the screen in Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979). An Interview with the Vampire adaptation, meanwhile, wouldn’t arrive in theatres until 1994. (source)

Anne Rice plotting out Louis's (permanent) death in the early notes for Merrick...
Since I was already referencing a response I gave to a question about Armand's possible reaction to Louis's suicide attempt earlier today, I remembered this that I stumbled on while going through the Anne Rice Collection at Tulane — which in a way answers that very same question:
Tumblr media
This scene has to be major in the novel, and as I see it now, Claudia will be extremely horrible to Louis and drive him to suicide.
Louis will expose himself to the sun, and the others will find his burned body in its coffin on the flat portion of the slate roof of the townhouse.
Those who will come together, having felt the passing of Louis will include Armand and Merrique.
David will be for scattering all the ashes of Louis. But Armand and Lestat will refuse to do it. Then Lestat will be won over. Armand will want to pour blood on the ashes. Armand and Lestat will get in a battle, and finally Armand will give up, and Lestat will pick up the lumps of charcoal of the body, pulverize them and scatter them to the winds.
Okay, but Armand and Lestat battling over whether Louis can be brought back to life? Lestat scattering Louis's ashes while Armand presumably watches, defeated? My heart!
Next time you complain about Merrick, remember... it could've ended like this.
I love Louis and I love him with Armand and Lestat both (separately and all together), so of course I'm very grateful Anne didn't go this route! But the idea that she might've??? 🫢
I'm not up to write this level of Angst™️ and do it justice but it's definitely something that could be explored further in fic! And it is one (of many lmao) instances where you can see such a stark difference between where Anne started and where she ended with her novels.

I love the implications that come from aging Armand up with the intention of keeping his dynamic with Marius in tvl the same (marius regrets making Armand bcus his existence is a crime against vampire kind/an abomination and warns Lestat to not make the mistake he did) bcus there's literally no reason why Armand's existence would be in anyway a crime now so to keep that regret it goes from "I should've never turned a child into a vampire bcus he's fucked up now" to "I should've never turned a weird fuck up like Armand into a vampire now he's even mooore fucked up" and that's so funny to me 😭😭😭 im sorry armand ily king but the concept that he is just such a weird freak that its genuinely dangerous and abhorrent to turn him is iconic. Lestat musical did this and it kills me every time laughing. VAMPIRE 101!!! NEVER TURN SOMEONE WHO IS UNFIT FOR THE BLOOD FOR EXAMPLE A CHILD OR A STRAIGHT PERSON OR ARMAND OR YOU WILL!!! BE PUT TO DEATH. I am in full support of making vampire rules as vague and dubious as possible and if Armand is key to that bring it on

Louis complaining about having to squeeze into a coffin like sardines with Lestat (who he's totally not gay for) and lie face down on top of him with their faces smushed up against each other, like oh no! That's so sad, I'm heartbroken for you. What hardships you must endure in life. That's sucks, that sucks real bad. Are you okay? Was that tough? However did you cope? That must have been soooo hard, I'm so sorry that happened to you 😞😥
