I was trying to explain the plot of a story I'm writing to my best friend's mom today and she was telling me how it sounds similar to the Lauren Bancroft movie she recently watched and she went on for quite a while before my best friend walked in and said, "Mom, are you talking about Tomb Raider?"
I'm fucking crying

Steps between Laurens and KG3?
This one comes down to how you define what counts as a step, so this is a two-parter.
If we mean "were present together in the same place, no interaction needed", then the connection is direct. Laurens saw King George III in person on 9 April 1772.
I had the Honour last Thursday, of seeing the King in all his Glory on the Throne in the House of Peers_ and just afterwards in his State Coach_ attended by his Guards_
John Laurens to James Laurens, 17 April 1772
If, however, we insist that the parties involved must have interacted at least in some way, then the most fun answer is Lafayette (courtesy of @nordleuchten).
Lafayette, who had already decided to travel to America and made considerable preparations for his trip, was presented to King George III by his great-uncle, Ambassador Noailles, when he visited London in February 1777. In his memoir, Lafayette recounts that:
J'arrivai donc à Londres avec M. de Poix et vis d'abord l'Américain Bancroft, et ensuite Sa Majesté britannique. A dix-neuf ans, on aime peut-être trop à persifler un peu le roi qu'on va combattre. Thus I arrived in London with Mr de Poix and saw first the American, Bancroft, and then his britannic Majesty. At nineteen years old, one enjoys, perhaps too much, mocking the king one is going to fight.
Lafayette set off for America soon after, and met Laurens in August 1777, when they both joined the war effort.

Does art make a difference?
Aw, sure. Of course there are degrees of extremity to the potential change that art can effect, depending on how many people are able to engage with it. The Beatles made a huge difference in the world. But Henry Darger, Jeff McKissack, Karen Dalton, Pauline Oliveros, Kenneth Patchen – there are so many folks who have made great art and not gotten massively famous for it, yet I think there are all sorts of ways their work informs and shapes other people’s work, and brains, and decisions.
Should politics and art mix?
Well, everything mixes, the New Statesman! That’s like asking if a knee-reflex hammer and a quadriceps tendon should “mix”.
Is your work for the many or for the few?
That’s for the many/few to say. I just crank out the hot jams.
If you were world leader, what would be your first law?
Gravity. I feel like we need to tighten up the constitutional protections that particular law enjoys. It’s a ticking time bomb, if you ask me.
Who would be your top advisers?
Cute angel on one shoulder, cute devil on the other.
What, if anything, would you censor?
Maybe we could all agree to not bust each other’s chops all cut-dang day.
If you had to banish one public figure, who would it be?
Don’t know, banishment might be a little extreme, but I’d sure like to take that Stephen Hawking dude down a notch or two. Right? Are you with me?
What are the rules that you live by?
Basically, “bros before hos”. I feel like if you stay true to that, everything else just kind of falls into place.
Do you love your country?
I love William Faulkner, Dolly Parton, fried chicken, Van Dyke Parks, the Grand Canyon, Topanga Canyon, bacon cheeseburgers with horseradish, Georgia O’Keeffe, Grand Ole Opry, Gary Snyder, Gilda Radner, Radio City Music Hall, Big Sur, Ponderosa pines, Southern BBQ, Highway One, Kris Kristofferson, National Arts Club in New York, Ruth Crawford Seeger, Joni Mitchell, Ernest Hemingway, Harriet Tubman, Hearst Castle, Ansel Adams, Kenneth Jay Lane, Yuba River, South Yuba River Citizens League, “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore”, “Hired Hand”, “The Jerk”, “The Sting”, “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”, clambakes, lobster rolls, s’mores, camping in the Sierra Nevadas, land sailing in the Nevada desert, riding horseback in Canyon de Chelly; Walker Percy, Billie Holiday, Drag City, Chez Panisse/Alice Waters/slow food movement, David Crosby, Ralph Lauren,San Francisco Tape Music Center, Albert Brooks, Utah Phillips, Carol Moseley Braun, Bolinas CA, Ashland OR, Lawrence KS, Austin TX, Bainbridge Island WA, Marilyn Monroe, Mills College, Elizabeth Cotton, Carl Sandburg, the Orange Show in Houston, Toni Morrison, Texas Gladden, California College of Ayurvedic Medicine, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Saturday Night Live, Aaron Copland, Barack Obama, Oscar de la Renta, Alan Lomax, Joyce Carol Oates, Fred Neil, Henry Cowell, Barneys New York, Golden Gate Park, Musee Mechanique, Woody Guthrie, Maxfield Parrish, Malibu, Maui, Napa Valley, Terry Riley, drive-in movies, homemade blackberry ice cream from blackberries picked on my property, Lil Wayne, Walt Whitman, Halston, Lavender Ridge Grenache from Lodi CA, Tony Duquette, Julia Morgan, Lotta Crabtree, Empire Mine, North Columbia Schoolhouse, Disneyland, Nevada County Grandmothers for Peace; Roberta Flack, Randy Newman, Mark Helprin, Larry David, Prince; cooking on Thanksgiving; Shel Siverstein, Lee Hazlewood, Lee Radziwill, Jackie Onassis, E.B. White, William Carlos Williams, Jay Z, Ralph Stanley, Allen Ginsberg, Cesar Chavez, Harvey Milk, RFK, Rosa Parks, Arthur Miller, “The Simpsons”, Julia Child, Henry Miller, Arthur Ashe, Anne Bancroft, The Farm Midwifery Center in TN, Martha Graham, Alvin Ailey, Jr., Eleanor Roosevelt, Clark Gable, Harry Nilsson, Woodstock, and some other stuff. Buuuut, the ol’ U S of A can pull some pretty dick moves. I’m hoping it’ll all come out in the wash...
Are we all doomed?
If we keep our expectations pretty low I think we might be fine. I mean, we’re definitely all dying at some point. There’s no getting around that. But between now and then, things might start looking up!
— Joanna Newsom for The New Statesman, 2008

The reason I’m saying things like “was this deliberate” about Altered Carbon (usually that’s a question I don’t give a fuck about) is ‘cause I was trying to pay closer attention to the artifice and technique in this one. Brings you a little closer to “what’s the author doing” I guess. I was particularly interested in how the central mystery was written and how it unfolded.
This is a non-trivial thing to do well, because the “answer” to a mystery has to be obvious in hindsight but ideally difficult to predict, so the easiest way to do that is have an answer that’s is just obvious obvious and artificially twist things around so that the characters (and by extension the reader) take 400 pages to reach the obvious answer. This can be extremely clunky and feel like cheating, but it can be seamless enough to be near-invisible.
Spoilers below:
Here, the question is “why would someone whose consciousness was backed up 48 hours ago, and who has multiple spare clone bodies ready to reupload into in case of accidental death, commit suicide, knowing they’ll simply be restored immediately from the recent backup?” The novel follows Takeshi Kovacs’ attempt to figure out why Laurens Bancroft, the wealthy suicide and Kovacs’ employer, killed himself. Since the backup was created before he decided to kill himself, he therefore does not remember what happened.
Therein lies the answer, of course. Since he knew he wouldn’t succeed in killing himself, that must not have been what he was trying to do: he must have wanted to kill only the current version of himself. The fact that he doesn’t remember what happened is precisely the point: there was something he wanted to ensure he forgot.
If you’d taken thirty seconds, you could probably guess something like this, but there are enough characters, especially Bancroft, who assume it was a murder, and enough characters who are very keen for everyone to believe it was suicide despite inconclusive evidence, that the “obvious” answer is made thoroughly non-obvious! For three quarters of the book, it’s a murder mystery! And with the whole book in view, this is a little artificial, but the leads the “murder” investigation takes the narrative down all tie back in to the actual solution elegantly enough that I don’t consider the artifice a weakness.

Like Bancroft, MacIntyre had been a man of power, and like all men of power, when he talked of prices worth paying, you could be sure of one thing. Someone else was paying.

I love Altered Carbon (season 1)
It took me a couple of days to finish Altered Carbon, not because I didn’t like it, but because I liked it a lot. I wanted to pace myself and savour the episodes instead of plowing through them like I usually do (it took me a couple of weeks to get through like 14 seasons of all the One Chicago shows) and I actually managed... for like the first 4 episodes. It was pretty much a free fall after that point.
I loved pretty much everything about the first season; Joel Kinnaman for one thing because Joel WAS Takeshi Kovacs - except obviously when Will Yun Lee WAS Takeshi Kovacs. I loved the relationship between him Poe, Ortega and Elliot. I loved how Joel played him as such an tired, weathered soul who just wanted some sleep and not be bothered by people wanting to murder violently him at every corner - contrast with how Will played Kovacs in the flashbacks. They were both perfect Kovacs tbh.
I loved the setting and the aesthetic of the show and the special effects and literally just everything.
Season 2 however... I watched some clips knowing full well going in that I was going to hate it. I love Joel too much in the role to be able to see anyone else besides him in the role (and obv Will or even Byron - who, tbh, did a better job as Kovacs than he did as Dimi). And to be completely honest, I like Anthony Mackie, but he’s just too Anthony Mackie to be Takeshi Kovacs. It just doesn’t work. In the scenes I’ve seen his arms just seem far too stiff and he does too much furrowed brow acting).
Not to mention pretty much everyone I love from the first season is no longer there (besides Poe, though to be honest as much as I like Poe, he’s not enough reason for me to be interested in the second season without Joel and their establish friendship to be there to greet me). I think Will is still there in some capacity, but I really don’t care enough about anything else there to find out how much.
I would however watch a season 3 if Will Yun Lee was Kovacs’s preset sleeve throughout the season.
But besides Joel and the other characters and even the plot, what absolutely made the first season for me was James Purefoy as Laurens Bancroft.
I’ve LOVED James Purefoy since the moment he knighted Heath Ledger in A Knight’s Tale and I haven’t stopped loving him since. He just brought so much depth and charisma to the role, I honestly didn’t know whether I loved him or hated him which is something to be said about a character whose kink was beating prostitutes to death and buying them new sleeves. I don’t even know where even to begin with my feelings about the characters but my main point was that James played him with aplomb and he will go down in my books as one of the best antagonist characters I’ve ever watched on a TV show.
The lack of James Purefoy is another reason for me not to watch season 2, on top of everything else.
Not to mention absence of the most important character:
