one backward leap of courage
summary: you took a leap of courage and decided to confess your feelings... when he can’t hear you. but is that really the case??? ft. xiao, kaeya, kaveh notes: slightlyshy!reader | just a fluffy and lighthearted fic!!
xiao
your chest swelled in happiness, as you took in the sight beside you. xiao’s eyes twinkled as it reflected the blooming firework at the sky.
with much effort (and begging), he finally agreed to celebrate lantern rite with you—although calling it celebration might be a bit much, since all you did was cook him his favorite meal and asked him to watch the firework together and even that took you so much time to convince him, however you always knew somehow that xiao would cave in, he always does.
you kept staring at the man you’ve had a crush on since forever, completely neglecting the grand firework display that was currently going on, a certain emotion overwhelmed you.
“i like you, xiao.” you said without hesitation, because you were sure and confident that he would not hear you over the loud noise. you smiled at the little leap of courage you just did; perhaps someday i could say it for real. you practically had to force youself to not look at him anymore and enjoy the rest of the fireworks.
when it’s done, you noticed xiao’s face was painted with the faintest color of peach. “....me too,” he said. you looked at him blankly, “you too what?” tilting your heard questioningly. “fine, you’re going to make me say it? i like you too.”
“what?”
he peered in to your face. “why are you so surprised? didn’t you just say you liked.. me?” he said, becoming a bit unsure and definitely didn’t want to sound overconfident. your expression fell, completely mortified. “y-you heard that?” you stammered, the beat of your heart followed the same pace.
“wasn’t i suppose to? i heard you called my name very clearly.” xiao looked beyond confused. “well no! i mean, i guess yes?” you racked your brain to at least form an excuse but it proved to be difficult since it just hit you not only he heard the confession, but he actually said that he reciprocated your feelings.
“i just didn’t think you heard me,” you finally said. “you were right beside me, how could i not?” he spoke as a matter of fact.  you went quiet, processing the event that just happened. xiao stared at you, moving his hand to the side so his pinky finger grazed against yours. (that was his leap of courage move) “what’s wrong?” he asked.
“you like me too?” you blurt out, bashfulness reappeared on his face. “more than you know,” he mumbled, and you felt the jump on of your heartbeat because never you thought that the aloof yaksha had the capability of saying something like that. you covered your face with both of your hands, “sorry i’m just so happy.”
xiao chuckled, he thought you were cute (but he will not say that  out loud) as he linked his and your fingers together. “we’re the same, then.”
kaeya
a trip to kaeya’s office has never felt like an errand—although it literally is. as his right hand person, you were assigned to give the cavalry captain a daily report at the end of the day, and you were more than happy to do that. you’ve liked kaeya for over a few months now; his teasing, his smirk, his voice and his mischief demeanor. you were attracted to all of him like a crow to shiny things, however you never actually have the courage to say these things to the said person. you wanted to though, so you’ve been practicing  saying it out loud. even then the confession always felt a little clumsy, like it was not enough for a delicate feeling that meant much more. so you’ve been holding it off until you’ve gathered the courage it’s the right time.
but when you’re walking through the deserted corridor and found yourself alone, you liked to try and say it. not to anyone or for someone to hear, it’s just to convince yourself that you were able to say it out loud.
“captain, i like you! ...that sounds really awkward.” you pondered as you tried something else. “kaeya, i really like you,” you changed your tone to a softer one.
“hmm, i prefer the one where you call my name better.” a very familiar voice spoke.
“you think so too?” you responded without thinking.
there’s stillness as the realization hits. five seconds passed, ten seconds. you’re not moving even an inch and you weren’t even sure that you were breathing. you could feel your whole face burning all the way to the tip on your ears. kaeya chuckled quietly, and it made you want to run away. so you tried to. before a hand reached out to grip your arm, making your plan of escape futile.
“nuh uh, i don’t think you get to run away after that,” kaeya said, your back still facing him. “captain.. please let me go....” you pleaded comically, still embarrassed beyond belief. “and what? robbed of the chance of hearing you say that to me?” you could hear the ear-to-ear smile he must be having right now. “that’s..!” you stumbled, not really knowing what kind of excuse you could make.
“please? may i hear it again?” he said softly, turning you to face him by the shoulder gently. you decided to just rip off the band aid completely, no matter what his answer is you’re ready to hear it. “i like you, kaeya” your voice was barely audible as you reach the end of your sentence, still kaeya got that. of course he did. because those were words he’s been dreaming to hear all this time after all. he pulled your hand so you’re a step closer to him (which is still a bit far to kaeya’s preference but he’s not worried. you both will get there in no time)
a gorgeous smile on his face, like he just heard the best news of his life. “i feel the same, (y/n).”
kaveh
kaveh who’s always there for you, whose heart made out of gold. his kindness, his attentiveness; for you, it would be impossible not to like him. you both have been friends for a little over six months, but to you he’s been more than that, or at least you hoped, that he’s more than that. one of these days you told yourself that you’re gonna be brave and tell him how you feel but every conversation you had with him was just so cozy, so comfortable that you don’t want to bring it up. (you were scared out of your mind that you will ruin your friendship)
yesterday kaveh had asked you if you wanted to come and watch one of nilou’s performance, but you learnt not to get your hopes up as you were sure tighnari, cyno, and perhaps alhaitham if he was up to it would be there as well. just the usual get-together with friends. though either way, you’d never refuse good company, they’re all your good friends too after all.
however, you don’t find anyone except the blond at the prior agreed spot to meet. “where is everyone? won’t the event start any minute?” you asked kaveh and he just looked at you. “who’s everyone? did you invite someone els-“
“zubayr theater proudly present to you, nilou!” a presenter voice boomed through the crowd, as the loud music follows. you both set your gaze to the stage, the conversation abandoned. nilou’s dance was exceptionally well, as always. you sneaked a glance at the person beside you who seemed like he was enjoying it as much as you do, and somehow something that simple has brought a smile to your face. an overwhelming pleasant sensation filled your chest, “as i thought, i truly like you kaveh.”
you keep your eyes on him, not expecting anything, since the loud music would erase the trace of your confession. however that thought quickly broke when he looked at you, a stunned expression apparent on his face. kaveh heard you. and if you know anything about confessing, that is not the face of someone who would give you a good response about what you just said.
you panicked as you turned around and you squeezed through the crowd to run away.
-
“wait, (y/n)! please wait,” he panted, he has ran after you to the emptier area, the festivity could still be heard slightly. you stopped, just so that he could catch his breath. “why were you after me?”
“because you practically ran away? what was that?” he walked closer to you. “i don’t know! i just panicked. you weren’t suppose to hear that,”  you stared at your shoes. “and why?” he questioned. “well do you.. wanna hear that?” you asked timidly. “i do, as a matter of fact!” kaveh aggressively answer.
somehow the whole thing turned into your usual bickering you couldn’t help but smile a little.
“now stay put cause i have something to say too,” he said. “okay.”
“alright, here goes. i like you too, (y/n), i always have,” he finally said, a slight blush covered his cheeks and he looked especially pretty you couldn’t help but stare. it hasn’t sunk in the fact that the man you have always liked share the same feelings. “but why did you look like someone just run over your architectural model?” you asked.
“that was only because i planned to confess to you i got all of it ready you know? where to walk you with and then i’d surprise you with a dinner. and i just couldn’t believe that you’d actually beat me to it.” he rubbed his neck, feeling a bit bashful.
happiness basked over you, your heart squeezes in the nicest way possible.
“well, can we still make it to that dinner?”
kaveh smiled, offering a hand for you to take. “sure can, we better hurry then.” the warmth from his hand made you giddy, you had a silent thought that even if this place was further away than you’d anticipated, you’d be more than okay with that.

Something that will never cease to rot my brain is just how brilliantly mhy have developed Xiao's character over the past three years. I'm lucky enough to have started playing Genshin before he was added to the game (which does of course mean newer players have probably had a different experience of him, I'll get into that later) so I've been there for every single moment that Xiao appeared and it's always so amazing to me just how much effort has been put into him. (Long rant and Mild Spoilers for the Poetry Gala Event below lol)
Xiao in the Archon quest and in 1.3 (both in his character quest and 1.3 Lantern Rite) compared to Xiao in the most recent event is truly like night and day, and what's most impressive about that is that how he acts in the poetry event feels completely true to his character. Xiao has earned this gentleness over the past three years, as the traveler but also the other people he's met have urged him to open up and interact with others more often.
This really couldn't have been achieved without mhy taking advantage of every scrap of screen time Xiao has gotten. They absolutely have favorites and Xiao is for sure one of them. I'll use Moonchase as a comparison to the Poetry Gala. Back then we saw Xiao on screen for maybe 5 minutes at most, appearing because the traveler called him, tasting Xiangling's dish and giving her a compliment (at least for his standards for giving compliments) and then disappearing. But now we see him at the poetry event being invited to join by Venti and Hu Tao (and him not outright refusing!!), and then staying to socialize with Chongyun's group when everyone (not just the traveler) asks him to.
3.4 Lantern Rite and the Poetry Gala have felt like the biggest steps due to the fact that we see Xiao actively participating in activities of his own volition. Most of his appearances before 3.4 (and even after, counting Baizhu's quest) are dictated by about 2.5 factors. The first is his duty: protecting Liyue from evil, more specifically keeping its people safe from these evils. The second is being called by the traveler, an act which I would consider a symbol of their friendship later on, but in the beginning and probably still in a lingering capacity now I think can be attributed to a sense of debt towards them. They helped save Liyue in a time of crisis, after having no obligation to do so, and someone like Xiao who takes his duties in protecting Liyue so seriously would absolutely feel like he owes a complete outsider like the traveler a debt after they kinda did his job for him. So much of Xiao's character is about debts, after all. That even ties into the 2.5th reason, where he would probably feel some obligation to appear at Lantern Rite because Zhongli would be there, though it's unclear if Hu Tao mentioned he would be so it might not even count in that case.
Now we see Xiao participating in events on the invitation of Hu Tao and Venti who are seeking him out because they see him as a friend. We see him taking not only the traveler's feelings into account when asked to participate, but also Chongyun and Diona's. It's such a far cry from his "I don't associate with mortals" attitude that we saw back in 2021.
That barely even touches the shift we've seen in his demeanor either. Back in 2021, Xiao always spoke very curtly and in as few words as possible, always seeming displeased any time he had to hold a conversation, but now he's loosened up so much that the difference is honestly staggering. It even shows through in his birthday letters from 2021 vs. 2023 (And even here we see him going out of his way to socialize of his own volition, so proud of him!):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've gone back and forth between EN and CN voiceovers in the past year, so some of Xiao's appearances I've only experienced in CN, but hearing him in the Poetry Gala event in EN I can only give his voice actress a thousand kudos for how amazing her performance is. Xiao's voice has softened with time, and it's such a small detail, but I honestly think that it's what hammers his growth home more than anything else for me. He's not only willing to have full conversations with people he's less familiar with now, but he also doesn't feel the need to speak as harshly to them either, and that's really amazing to hear play out in the game.
Xiao's voicelines are so fascinating to me for that very reason, because they act as a time capsule for how he was back in 2021, and that's just not what he sounds like anymore. Obviously, voice actors' performances of their characters will shift with time but Xiao is the only character for which I can say that his demeanor really has just changed with time. Of course, I think that in some cases this does actually make sense, namely if a newer player pulls Xiao and has only gotten to experience the Archon Quest and maybe his Character Quest. In that case, all of the time that has passed simply doesn't exist. But at the same time I can only imagine how funny it would be for a long-time player who simply never pulled Xiao for one reason or another to pull him and listen to his lines and hear his older, edgier self lol
Though on that note I do also need to point out the biggest downside of all of this, and what is perhaps my greatest sadness about Xiao's character development, which is that new Genshin players simply won't have the chance to experience it. There are many characters who get the short end of the stick with the nature of Genshin's serialized storytelling and limited-time events (Albedo, Kazuha, and a plethora of 4 stars who don't get featured much, just to name a few), but I think Xiao's actually saddens me the most, because I believe the time that has passed is the greatest strength when it comes to this development. People will get to see his arc from the Archon Quest to Perilous Trail (and thank god they preserved Perilous Trail as an Interlude), but even that is still a shadow of Xiao's actual progression over the years.
These days, newer Genshin players may have only seen Xiao in the Liyue Archon Quest before playing the Poetry Gala event (unless Perilous Trail is a prereq, which I don't know off the top of my head), and I can't even imagine how jarring it would be to see how he acts there and then immediately see him in this event. The way that time works in this case would probably just make it seem like mhy doesn't know what they're doing with Xiao when in reality three years of development have been compressed into a matter of weeks. Knowing that, I'm grateful to have been able to experience his story in its truest form, but it also cannot go unacknowledged that some aspects of Genshin's story have a shorter shelf life than others. It's a major problem with the game, from some perspectives, but at the same time it's just a consequence of how it's being developed.
Anyway, I just needed to gush after seeing Xiao absolutely steal the show in part 2 of the quest with his quiet participation and little smile (crying). He's so good and I love him so much, and it's so nice to see what they've done with him after he finally got some semblance of closure after Perilous Trail <3

NOTE: I have so much to say about the Poetry Gala Event because I enjoyed it so much. It's going to be lengthy but feel free to read me rambling haha.
I don't mean to be dramatic but... Chongyun enthusiasts, WE WON! I'm so happy that he was able to show up so much in this event! Like he actually got lines and so much screentime!! I know he always appears in Lantern Rite, but this just hits different. Did you see how fast he was talking and the way he did his little jump after having those chili peppers? XD Also the way he was giving Xingqiu some sass at the at the end of the story? Show him, Chongyun!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I never thought I would be able to see two of my favorite characters in the same frame! This is going to keep me fed until the next Lantern Rite haha.
On a similar note, this event was just as good as last year's goofy Lantern Rite! I will never stop talking about how much I love it when characters from different nations are able to meet each other, like the whole Xingqiu/Mika/Noelle interaction was really sweet! (But the way Xingqiu told them to just not get caught when sneaking away from home XD He's such a bad influence haha)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AND THIS. The way Zhongli and Venti were looking at the children, it really solidifies the fact they they're retired. Don't mind me crying over here 🥺
Tumblr media
I didn't expect the event to dive a bit into Diona's lore, so that was really cool!! Also really glad that learning about Oceanids and their power kind of helped Chongyun come to terms with his yang energy. (I shall now wait patiently for some lore drop on Chongyun.)
Tumblr media
The whole story was just so nice. And the MUSIC for Callirhoe's story was the final cherry on top 👌

The idea of little walks around the Windblume festival with Navia keeps floating by my brain randomly.
Tumblr media
Taking Navia around to all the events and doing little games and helping her with aiming her arrows at the balloons and getting her flustered.
Taking Navia out to Good Hunter for Mondstadt food and then introducing her to Mondstadt friends.
Navia and Amber getting along as Amber pulls her around Mond to show her around and tell her stories and so on.
Navia meeting Lisa and Jean and just clicking with Lisa over books! I hc Navia as being an avid reader when she gets the smallest amount of alone time. So Lisa and Navia would get along and exchange their favorite books, poems, and so on. Poor Jean, she has to sit there and is lost until Navia brings up wanting to read about Vanessa and Jean knows all these books and poems and plays that Navia has a list written down to take with her.
Taking Navia to the Angels Share and then to the Cat's Tail to visit Diluc and Diona.
Diona gets to go on break and Navia gets to take the little girl out for some adventure away from the alcohol filled streets and the drunken revelry.
Oh! Taking Navia to Old Mondstadt and letting her see the old city and telling her what we know about it and the bard that helped win freedom for the Mondstadt we know today.
When the sun starts to set and you take her out to Starsnatch cliff to watch the moon and stars as the wind blows, causing the cecilia's to sway gently.
Taking Navia to the old Theater and taking out the Ruin Guard together before dancing in the old theater just like the Icewind Suite in Fontaine.
Promising Navia to take her to the Lantern Rite and showing her around and then on to the Sabzeruz Festival when it comes around next....
Just: Taking Navia on adventures outside of Fontaine and making memories outside of her home region.
Navia needs to come home quick so i can take her around Teyvat with Yelan and Dehya...dream team, just waiting for Arlecchino after Navia!

Ok I think if I were to rank the lantern rites I personally participated in it would be
1) 2023 lantern rite
2) 2022 lantern rite
3) 2024 lantern rite
Thoughts on this year’s lantern rite (2024) under the cut (vague spoilers)
This year’s was the weakest to me :( I liked how the previous years they made an effort to get most of the Liyue cast involved but there was barely anyone this year not to mention we end the quest in Fontaine❓❓I like the fontaine cast but also I am a little sick of fontaine after 3 consecutive patches of it in a row I’m not really interested in being there for lantern rite….that’s the peak Liyue event and I’m very biased bc I LOVE Liyue
I feel the previous two years they did a great job of giving new Liyue characters focus, having other region cameos etc without it being overwhelming and making lantern rite feel too small & concentrated on specific things. I like ga-ming’s little plotline and how he and xianyun being there build a theme of parental bonds but No Liyue harbor friend group gang??? Even in passing? It felt so empty 😔 and I was happy to see Xiao because he’s my favorite but honestly him being there without alot of the Liyue cast spread out just felt kind of forced to me JDJFNJFFN
I wonder if maybe they should’ve done what they did for 2022 where they dropped the Shenhe Jade chamber rebuilding quest at the same time for Ga-Ming so we have more screen time to regulate to the overall cast and not just him? IDK!! At the very least I wish most Liyue characters got a proper cameo in the main cutscene, I think they’re in the background but it’s so easy to miss…they don’t even have to talk I just want to see them walking around!! I was a little ok with it but after the 4th part was just like. 80% fontaine characters I was like MAN. WHAT…. Just kind of underwhelmed . Oh well
I had fun with it…but I had such an ABSOLUTE blast with the last two years this is just a little disappointing. I just came out of this one wanting to go rewatch 2023’s. It had everything. Liyue cast harbor gang. Fun cutscene with everyone. Xiao. Venti’s cameo was handled in a fun way. They gave me the insanity of a zhongvenxiao dinner party . ADEPTUS YURI. fun cameos with like everyone in a way that felt pretty intuitive. I loved it omg. The main plus I can think of for 2024 lantern rite is I’m a big fan of the teapot furnitures. That is all……..

JJK characters playing Genshin Impact
Work and School are taking the majority of my time so here's this ig :/
Tumblr media
Gojo Satoru:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know for a fact he plays Kazuha bc Kazuha is good in every team ever. He also likes playing Ayato sometimes.
He's also definitely a whale- he spends so much money on Genshin and has multiple 5 star characters and their weapons at C6 R5.
He doesn't have very high exploration though because he doesn't have a lot of time to play. He's a very casual player despite the amount of money he spends on it. Just logs in to do his dailies, perhaps fights a boss or two.
HATES the Aranara quest because he can't find any of them and refuses to use any "cheats" (looking up where to find them)
His favourite element is most likely Anemo and his favourite region is Fontaine.
Suguru Geto:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I highkey think Geto likes morally grey characters bc he can kinda relate to them.
He likes Raiden bc of the archon quest and her character quest. In other words, he just likes her lore involving Makoto and the other archons.
He's spent some money on genshin. Like buying the Welkin or a character skin or two, but nothing too crazy.
His favourite events are Windtrace and the Golden Apple Archipelago. He also doesn't care too much for the Aranara quest but he likes the primos he gets out of it. He has a few areas at 100% exploration but most of them are between 80%-95%.
his favourite element is Electro and Dendro and his favourite region is Inazuma.
Megumi Fushiguro:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Megumi's favourite 5 star is Xiao bc he has a cool character design. He likes Xiao's tattoos and he likes his skill and burst, as well as his lore and his ties to Zhongli.
Bc of this, his favourite events are the annual Lantern Rite events. He didn't care too much about Xiao at first but then liked him after the story quest where he saved the traveler from falling.
Highkey he's saving up for Cloud Retainer
He's f2p and gets most of his primos through exploration.
Favourite element is Anemo and his favourite region is also Liyue but likes Inazuma too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Inumaki is a Nilou defender for life! He also likes Ayaka and is an Ayaka defender too.
He just likes the characters that are constantly mischaracterized- esp the ones that are dumbed down to "traveler's harem".
He likes any event involving Itto bc he's funny. But he especially loves Itto's Onikabuto battle events bc he likes mini-game type events.
Also another f2p bc he doesn't like spending much money when he doesn't have to.
Favourite element is Cryo and Hydro and his favorite region is Inazuma.
Panda:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Panda likes Itto bc he's funny (he's the reason Inumaki likes Itto) and he likes Ushi.
He's gotten his highest crit using Itto and likes his character design. He just thinks Itto's a cool character all around (he's right).
Bc Panda is a Panda, he likes exploring Liyue even though he forgets he's supposed to open chests. He just plays to fight a bunch of things tbh. He often joins Inumaki on Co-op and they go around fighting bosses.
Favorite events are also anything that have Itto in them including his beetle battle events. And the events where you just have to fight stuff, like Misty Dungeon.
Doesn't have a favourite element but his favourite region is Liyue.
Okkotsu Yuta:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He doesn't play Genshin that much, if at all, but he only started playing because he saw Panda and Inumaki playing together one time and thought it was interesting.
He likes Chongyun bc of his relation to spirits and pure-yang energy. He once thought something like that could benefit him but quickly let that go.
He's probably only up to Mondstadt and Liyue tbh :/ Barely started the second archon quest with Zhongli and Liyue.
He likes the combat in the game but sometimes he just goes around and picks resources like the corolla mist flowers and dandelion seeds.
His favourite elements are Anemo and Cryo and he doesn't have a favourite region.

☆ LOVE POTION, various — he doesn’t know much about love, but he’ll try his best for you.
contents. featuring xiao, dan heng, and roronoa zoro. gender neutral reader, fluff. xiao + zoro is canon au, dan heng’s is modern! your first date with each of the boys ♡ word count. 537
notes. writing the prompt “love potion” for my own event despite it having been closed for a month LMAO i just need an excuse to write something… anyways uh pls pretend i’m not writing xiao when i said i wouldn’t in a while 🫣 i have a wip for tighnari otw i promise !!!
Tumblr media
xiao has never been interested in mortal celebrations. but after meeting you, he can’t help but want to learn more about them. “would you… want to come to the lantern rite with me?”
you were pleasantly surprised when he asked; glad to see that the yaksha was finally coming out of his shell. you laughed, took his hand (which prompted a blushing mess out of him), and led him down to the harbor, where the festivities were already starting.
figuring he still wasn’t too comfortable being around large crowds of mortals, you took him to a secluded spot on a hill by the pavilion, close enough so that you could still see the lanterns that lit up the sky.
“they’re beautiful, aren’t they?” you ask him, following his eyes as he stared at tiny glowing dots fading in the night. xiao nods slowly, seemingly mesmerized by the sight. you smile softly, leaning your head on his shoulder as the two of you watch the fireworks show that followed.
dan heng, being a bit of a bookworm, was a little… socially awkward, to say the least. luckily, you found his quirks entertaining. “there’s a new bookstore that opened across the street… would you be interested?”
so one tuesday afternoon, you meet him by the park, where he stood with a bouquet of flowers in his hands. you giggle when he awkwardly offers them to you. “of course, why else would you have bought them for?”
making you way to the bookstore, dan heng watches as you stroll down the aisles, picking out some you wanted. he felt his heart swell as he spies his favorite novel in your hand. “i didn’t know you liked that book too…”
the two of you end up spending the rest of the afternoon in the cafe next door, chatting about your favorite books over coffee. he smiles, maybe being a geek isn’t a such bad thing after all.
zoro never quite wanted to leave the sunny when the crew docked on a new island; he preferred to stay behind and take a nap, or train. but you always encouraged him to come along, and he finally decided to go along with it. “i’m gonna go explore… if ‘ya wanna come with.”
there happened to be a small crafts market in the town nearby, so you and zoro (mostly just you) went admiring the handicrafts the stalls had on display. "aww, how lovely!" you admire a little clockwork deer that reminded you a bit of chopper.
then you realized you had some business to attend to in town, so you left zoro behind for a few minutes, saying, "don't you dare get lost while i'm gone!" he stands there awkwardly, before glancing back at the crafts stall. while i'm here...
...and then of course you happen to accidentally encounter the marines, causing you to have to run back to the ship with zoro in tow. when you're finally safe in the crow's nest of the sunny, however... he presented you with the mechanical deer toy from earlier, to your joy. "i don't have that many berries but.. i know you wanted it, so i guess i'll just have to pay nami back later."
Tumblr media
end notes. i thought i would write a lot for xiao but i ended up writing more for zoro lmao he’s been taking up all of my brain recently but i hope you enjoyed <3

I finished Lantern Rite '24 in the nick of time before it goes away on the NA servers and I'm so glad I did. Hoyoverse have a good record with this event and it was another spectacular one this year.
I did think Paimon is picking up a horrible habit being so rude. I remember some complaints about as much for Furina's story quest and it unfortunately seems to have continued. I don't usually mind Paimon and I even kind of like the little flying exposition fairy most of the time but she was super rude with some of the dialogue this year. Hopefully isn't an issue next year!
I really enjoyed Zhongli's appearance and immediate understanding of the not-so-elaborate plan the gang had cooked up. It's also really funny to think he was just out and about flying kites as the former Lord of Geo does. It was also really sweet that he and Ciao got to share the moment they did. Not often we get development between those two.
On that note I was especially glad I went to see Xiao after the Lantern Rite like he asked. Really cute and wholesome moment between the Traveler and Xiao. I don't get too into shipping but pairing the Traveler with Xiao has always been one of my favorites.
Back to the Lantern Rite itself I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed Gaming's focus for this year's story quests. I was already a fan of Gaming's personality and play style so I knew I was going to like it but it was even better than I expected. As someone that had similar familial issues and unresolved issues with my own father this year got me good. I'm really happy for Gaming, even though he's a fictional character, and I'm glad for anyone else who maybe by some stretch were able to work through some of their own familial issues in part thanks to this year's Lantern Rite. Stranger things have happened, maybe this silly little beautiful gacha game story can be a catalyst for good for some folks.

A/N: 恭喜发财! (Wishing you prosperity and health!)
Directed especially for chinese and asian ppl! I'm malaysian, chinese specifically. Unfortunately, I am a disgrace to the family because my chinese and malay suck ass while the only language i'm mediocre in is english lol—
But that doesn't matter, it's now 2023 and there's more suffering to come from here! Therefore, I present to you a special oneshot that's extremely shorter than usual because i'm hella busy!
Since Lantern Rite is basically CNY, I decided to base this on the event, which unfortunately excludes all but Liyue characters and a few exceptions.
▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
The lanterns above you shine down brightly...
▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
You walked through the busy streets of Liyue Harbor, greeting many familiar faces with smiles and waves. The atmosphere was bright, the air filled with idle chattering, joyous laughter and beautiful music.
Children run back and forth, giggling in the midst of their game. The storyteller, Iron Tongue Tian, reciting yet another thrilling tale of Morax to large crowd of listeners enjoying their tea. Streets full of stalls, encouraging passersby to purchase a snack or two.
It seems every year, the Lantern Rite only grows more and more lively.
Your smile grew the more you strolled through Liyue, eventually spotting a certain group by Wanmin Restaurant.
There sat Chongyun, scarfing down on one of his popsicles. Beside him was Xingqiu, holding a book in one hand and telling the story within while using dramatic hand gestures to.
In front of Chongyun was Shenhe, the woman who listened to the story with a small smile of amusement on her face, a rare sight. Next to her was Xiangling, devouring a bowl of noodles as though she had been starved for years.
You stopped in your tracks, causing their attention now driven to you and their smiles growing wider than ever upon seeing you.
"[Name], it's a pleasure to see you again. Would you like to join us? We have an extra seat here."
"My liege, I am currently telling [favorite story], would you care to listen in on it's tale?"
"It is a delight to see you once more, [Name]. Please, you may sit here. We will always welcome you with open arms."
"[Nameeee]! Check it out! I made noodles with Whopperflower nectar as the soup! You gotta try it!"
How could you say no to them?
▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
The sound of singing filled your ears, your legs automatically following the melodious voice and relaxing tune of the music. Guided to Yujing Terrace, there stood a large stage in the middle with crows surrounding it.
You walked towards the stage, seeing the look of admiration on everyone's faces at the beautiful performance unravelling on the stage. You could feel your heart stop the moment you got in front.
There stood Yun Jin, the black haired singer swaying her body and arms to the rhythm of the music, her lips singing out the most elegant voice you've come to know and love. Behind her was none other than Xinyan playing her guitar with enthusiasm that could rival an energetic child, it was a surprise to hear such a wonderful mixture of her rock'n'roll music combined with Liyue's traditional calming tunes.
What surprised you more was the table at the very front, slightly further away from the crowd and closer to the stage sat Ningguang, her striking red eyes watching the stage performance with an impressed expression and sipping on a cup of tea as elegantly as ever. Right across her was Beidou, cheering just as loud as the music while swinging a large cup of beer in the air.
Quite odd, a pair of opposites whose personalities clash against one another joining together to witness another pair of personality opposites creating a masterpiece that would leave a mark in this special event. Yet, you couldn't have it any other way as they turned to you.
"Ah, it seems a special someone has arrived. [Name], please, take a seat... This next song is especially for you."
"Hey! [Name]! So glad you could make it! Didn't think i'd join this band, huh? Me too! But hey, beggars can't be choosers, i'm having way too much fun to care anyways! Now, c'mon, take a seat, we've got a special one coming right up for ya!"
"An evening like this couldn't get any better... but it seems it could, now that you are here. Care for a cup of tea? I would love to have you as our company. It's a rare opportunity to join the Liyue Qixing's Tianquan for tea like this, you should take the chance."
"Woah! [Name]? Hahah! Didn't think i'd see ya here! Hey, I got an extra cup of beer here, wanna chug one up with me like old times? It's your favorite too! Hahah, don't look at me like that, you always have the best taste in anything!"
Witnessing their performance with them was like watching a fairytale unfold right in front of you.
▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
Verr Goldet was certain surprised when you dropped by, but was nonetheless as she and the other regular residents had dearly missed you, her husband gladly offering you a room in the Wangshu Inn upon your arrival.
As much as you'd like to stay in their cozy rooms, you had to decline as you were only planning to stay for an hour or two just to catch up with them and the regulars.
But just before leaving, you always made sure to take a quick trip to the top of the Inn, to admire the breathtaking scenery of the land and sea with a plate of Almond Tofu for a certain Adepti. What you didn't expect; was to see a group of familiars already taking your sightseeing spot.
Standing in your favorite spot was Ganyu and Yaoyao, the half-Adepti smiling in content at the sight while holding the little girl's hand as she munched down on a Grilled Tiger Fish. On their left was Yanfei and Keqing chatting away in a carefree manner, gossiping about the most recent incidents the Pyro Adepti had aided in.
On the right was Xiao, standing next to Yelan in silence as they, too, admired the view of Liyue. Xiao's lips, although barely noticable, curved upwards, his golden eyes holding a sense of nostalgia and relaxation. And you swore, you saw four other faint silhouettes standing next to him, holding the same expression as he did before vanishing into thin air after gracing you with smiles. Yelan, on the other hand, had her back towards the sight, arms crossed and her back leaning against the wooden railing with the same sly grin on her face.
Your arrival did not go unnoticed, now all eyes on you, expecting and all.
"Hello, [Name]... it's a pleasant sight, isn't it? I heard that this is where you go to every time you're at Wangshu Inn. You certainly chose the most perfect view of Liyue. Come, we can make room for one more, please join us."
"Oh! [Name]! Come look! You can see an exquisite view of Liyue Harbor from here! I also have an extra Grilled Tiger Fish with me, you can have it!... Don't look at me with that face, you know I took the one without the vegetables for a reason..."
"[Name]! Just the person we knew would come here, I take it you're here to drink in the view of Liyue before leaving? Well, before you do that... come over here! You don't wanna miss out on what kind of stuff i've dealt with yesterday!"
"A pleasure to see you again, [Name]... I came here because I heard that this was where you found relaxing, you never disappoint, as always... I've finished my work today and I have some free time now, it would be an honour of you'd like to join me."
"[Name]... I knew you'd be here. You always came here during the festival and greeted me, regardless of whether or not you were aware that I was around. I see you've brought yet another plate of Almond Tofu, for me, as always... As much as I don't enjoy consuming mortal meals, I always find pleasure sharing one with you... What are you standing there for? Get over here, the Almond Tofu will grow cold."
"You know, it was absolutely pure agony trying to get the Yaksha to reveal your location on this time of the year... but it was worth it just to see that adorable surprised face of yours... What? I'm not telling the truth? Come over here, then, allow me to share you some... 'secrets' in gathering information."
Liyue is a sight to behold, especially when you are with others.
▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
The trip back to Liyue Harbor was but a slow one, you realized you never took the time to enjoy the scenery during the night. Tonight, you decide to slow down your walking and gaze at the ocean.
Though dark, the moon shining in the sea's surface caused it's surrounding lands to glow, creating a calming and elegant aura. You could feel a cold breeze in the air, brushing against your skin and causing several goosbumps to rise.
You held yourself, still admiring the forest during the night despite the coldness settling in. Yet, you never noticed a pair of footsteps following closely behind you.
"Feeling a little... cold?"
You spun around in shock and fear, not registering the familiar voice in your head until you saw those cheery blue eyes staring right into yours.
Childe, or Tartaglia— but you prefer calling him Ajax, the name he preferred you called him by instead of his aliases. The ginger, standing mere inches away from you with a hand on his hips, grinned at you.
"Evening, comrade! I take it you're out on a midnight stroll through the forest? Now... don't get me wrong, I know you're quite capable of defending yourself, but venturing outside into the woods without any proper protection isn't the brightest idea... Buuuut, since i'm heading back to the Harbor myself, what say you and I head back together while I protect you from any lingering danger?"
A gloved hand extended out for you, to which you happily took as the two of you returned to the Harbor, taking your sweet time walking.
▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
After a nice fulfilling meal at Liuli Pavillion, you've decided to stroll around the city once more before sending your own lantern off and clocking in for the day.
The streets remained just as lively as ever despite being so late into the night, your mind still functioning properly but you knew you had to call it a day soon.
Before so, you stopped by the Harbor to purchase a special gift for a certain someone, not counting to run into a group of people here who you are all too familiar with.
Standing in front of the stall you plan to purchase from was Zhongli, the Geo gentleman was holding one of the trinkets and examining it carefully, deep in thought while listening to the seller explain its functions at the same time. And you swore, you saw a silhouette of a female in a cloak, joyously laughing at the focused look on his face, sending you a soft smile before disappearing just as fast as she appeared. Next to him was an amused Baizhu, the green haired male was also listening in, but also watching a little girl.
That little girl was none other than his assistant— Qiqi, the young zombie who was watching a nearby paper theatre from afar. But with a crowd of taller people blocking the girl, it was no wonder that she was forced to sit on Hu Tao's shoulder just to see the play.
You walked over to the group, waving to them as soon as their eyes lit up and saw you.
"Good evening, [Name]. I take it you're here to purchase an item of interest? I see you're eyeing the item in my hand— come here, let us examine it's value together."
"Ah, [Name], I didn't think you'd be here. We are planning to take a walk to the nearby paper theater, would you be so kind as to join us? Don't worry, you can hold one of little Qiqi's hand while I hold the other."
"[Name]?... Hello, Qiqi didn't realize you were here, sorry. Qiqi wants to see the paper theatre... but Qiqi is too short. Hu Tao is tired... Can Qiqi sit on your shoulders too?"
"Oh, hey, [Name]! Came here to buy something, did ya? Is it for me? Thank you, hehe~ But, uh... Keep this between you and me; Qiqi's kiiiinda heavy. Do you mind if we switch? Or maybe you can help me pick one of these decorations. I kinda need to buy some for the parlor, the interior's getting a little bland, plus, a gift from you? Nothing better than that!~"
After buying a gift, all of you couldn't resist but to accompany Qiqi to the theatre.
▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
On the balcony of your home, you hold the lantern in your hand, the warmth of the candle inside carressing the skin of your palms. You looked up into the sky, seeing the sea of lanterns floating in the air.
The lantern in your hands glowed bright golden, as if it awaited to be released into the air with the rest. To that, you shall grant, taking a step foward and lifting it up into the air. As your fingers release the base, it seems as though the lantern glowed brightly in acknowledgement, drifting off to join the others in the air and above Liyue.
Your eyes followed the sea of lanterns drifting in the wind, the golden glow emitted growing brighter as more and more lanterns joined in the air. Resting an elbow on the railing, you placed your chin on the palm of your hand, staring in awe at the sight.
Your eyes eventually trailed over to a nearby mountain, widening upon seeing a pair of familiar silhouettes and another small one floating beaide them. Upon a closer look, you realized it was the blonde twin travellers and Paimon, smiling at you and waving.
Your eyes widened in shock, before you returned with a soft smile of your own and waving back at them. Their grins grew, realizing you had noticed them despite being so far away, but you could never forget those memorable blonde hairs and their bizarre clothing. As you lowered your arm, they clasped their hands together and nodded at you while mouthing the phrase;
'Happy Lantern Rite, [Name].'

MOAR GENSHIN: Our Life
📷 what’s your favorite ost? (can be a singular track or an album) All of Liyue and the Port Ormos theme. BANGER
🧵 who’s your favorite character mechanics/kit-wise? Un-meta queen Keqing, I think. I use her the most in battle, especially dailies, and she is my executive function in a nutshell. #bemorelikekeqing
🎞 who was your most recent five star? Green-themed Male Keqing. He came home with 113 Primos left, slid in there like a boss.
🧶 When did you start playing? About two and a bit years ago? Just when Liyue was released I think. My coworker was really into it and twisted my arm. I was more inclined when I knew I could play it on PS because fuck playing on mobile what am I an ant? We still talk about it together to this day even though she's moved away.
🪡 Who’s in your party and what roles do they fill? Kokomi: aesthetic and healing Alhaitham: aesthetic and DPS Keqing: aesthetic and basically everything because Electro is so versatile Yoimiya: aesthetic and all main duties 🦢 what’s your favorite region? I still love Liyue, but I love the Sumeru Gang and story, as well as the exploration. Mondo has a soft spot in my heart too, because you always find your way back. 🕸 brag about something. can be some numbers you’re proud of, how long you saved for someone, a good artifact you got, whatever. just hype yourself up F2P Alhaitham with 113 Primos to spare is pretty ace, tbh. 🐚 what’s something you want improved on/fixed in genshin? Pants on the women (Arlecchino being the first is mystifying). Seriously, get rid of most of the damn puzzles and ~special mechanics~, sometimes they just take away from the actual gameplay because they're distracting. They fixed the map, so that was my other main qualm. 🍃 who’s your least favorite npc? Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I actually have no idea. Maybe Shitou because he's a SHYSTER. 🐇 do you look at leaks? Yes. I am not a spoiler-free zone, except for the Archon and Story Quests and Hangouts. Builds, characters etc is all free game, I need to know who to save for, mate!
🍨 whose voice is your favorite? Sorry, Jenny, but Max Mittelman as Arataki Itto. Sublime. 🪴 what’s your favorite quest? Sumeru Archon and Yoimiya's second Story Quest. 🍄 what was your favorite event? Bottleland was great because Kokokae Trash was fed. I love the Lantern Rite festivals too. 🌙 what was your least favorite event? Anything with battle or puzzles. I suck at gaming, so I just get stressed. I try them once for the Primos and move on with my life. I should play today, non?

Are you excited for Lantern rite? Which free 4-star will you be choosing? What are your thoughts on the two new characters (Cloud retainer and Gaming)?
Lantern rite is one of my favorite Genshin events. I look forward to it every year :,))
!! HI BABYYY <3 I can say that I’m appropriately excited for lantern rite :D I’ve been going a little slow on genshin even quests recently, but lantern rite is always a banger, so im sure it’s gonna be fun !!
I also think that Cloud Retainer / Xianyun and Gaming look so !!! Cool !!! I’ve always found Xianyun pretty since we first saw her design wayyy back, and Gaming’s animations are ?? Literally?? Some of the best in the game rn ??
I’m planning to choose Gaming as my free 4-star, since I’ll be skipping the banners this patch because I’m saving for Shenhe’s rerun, and because most of my money’s gonna be going into getting Shenhe and Ganyu’s skins ! (And maybe finally getting Keqing’s, if the fancy strikes me ahjksd)
I hope you have a lovely lantern rite, and that it lives up to all your expectations, sweets <3
