Batman and Manhunter (Paul Kirk) by Walt Simonson.
This version of Manhunter has a rather confusing history. Originally, Paul Kirk was a private investigator, created by Ed Moore, who starred in his own serial in Adventure Comics (vol. 1) starting with issue #58 (January, 1941). The feature was titled Paul Kirk, Manhunter, but that was just a description of the job he did, not a nickname he used, nor was he ever called that.
Tumblr media
The Paul Kirk, Manhunter feature ended in issue #72.
Tumblr media
The final appearance of Paul Kirk, Manhunter, from Adventure Comics #72.
Adventure Comics #73, April 1942)* saw the debut of a new, costumed Manhunter feature by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby.
The new Manhunter was Rick Nelson (no, not Ozzie and Harriet's kid), a former big game hunter who decided he should put his skills to use hunting down criminals. He donned a costume and began his career as a crimefighter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The cover of Adventure Comics #73, the new Manhunter's first appearance, and page 8 from his initial story. Obviously, no one at DC editorial knew that Manhunter had a blue face mask, which is why the colorist went out of his way to create a mask for the character.
Tumblr media
Adventure Comics #75, wherein everyone is finally on the same page about the mask, except now his ear is blue as well.
As you can tell from these images, the new Manhunter definitely was in no way related to the previous feature with Paul Kirk.
Except by his second appearance in Adventure Comics #74 the character's name was changed from Rick Nelson to Paul Kirk. I don't know why made that decision, although many sources point the finger at DC's editorial staff. Anyhow, that led to the original Paul Kirk getting completely retconned out of DC continuity.
Simon and Kirby left the Manhunter feature after Adventure Comics #80 (November, 1942), although they were still doing the Sandman feature in that book. Manhunter's final appearance was in Adventure Comics #92 (June, 1944).
Writer/editor Archie Goodwin and artist Walt Simonson revived the Manhunter character for a series of 8-page back-up stories in Detective Comics (vol. 1) #473 (November, 1973).
Tumblr media
The new Manhunter by Walt Simonson. The figure is from a DC house ad.
This new Manhunter was a revived and revised Paul Kirk. Kirk had given up the costumed crimefighter gig and returned to big game hunting. He was mortally wounded during a hunt, and that would have been the end of him. But an organization called the Council found him, used their super-science to heal him, and gave him a genetic enhancement that gave him advanced healing. They also cloned him enough times to create a small army, of which Kirk was leader.
Goodwin and Simonson were going to make their Manhunter a completely original character. However, they used Simon and Kirby's version of Paul Kirk so that they did not have to spend their limited comic book pages to create a back story for their hero.
Kirk eventually realized the Council was up to no good and began working to take the organization down. He gained some allies along the way, including Batman. Together they brought an end to the Council, although Kirk lost his life - for good this time - when he caused the Council's HQ to explode.
Jack Kirby tried to revive his Joe Simon's version of Manhunter in 1st Issue Special #5 (August, 1975).
Tumblr media
The main character was Mark Shaw, not Paul Kirk, but the costumes were very similar. Jack also established an ancient organization that picked worthy individuals to act as a Manhunter to take down the criminals and gangs that the police could not - or would not - touch.
Unfortunately, Jack never got to finish that story. Instead, Steve Englehart took the concept and ran with it in a totally different direction during his brief tenure as the writer on Justice League of America.
That was not the end of the Manhunter character, of course, which has been revived several more times (including twice by surviving clones of Kirk). But that's a post for another day.
(* In March, 1942, one month before Simon and Kirby's Manhunter debuted, Quality Comics introduced their own Manhunter in Police Comics #8.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This guy was Dan Richards, a police rookie who graduated at the bottom of his academy class. A friend of his got framed, so Richards donned a rather dull costume (sometimes without pants, and the footprint chest emblem didn't last long) to fight crime. He was assisted by his faithful dog, Thor.
This Manhunter outlasted DC's version by a good stretch, until August, 1950's Police Comics #101.
Shortly thereafter, DC bought all of Quality's characters. Eventually all of them were incorporated into the DC Universe. The two different Manhunters finally met, post-Crisis On Infinite Earths, in All-Star Squadron #31.)

Animated Movie of the Day: The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
The Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, a building witness to countless stories. The most famous, however, involves two men (one young and malformed, the other old and in power) who fell in love with a Roma girl. While the young one let her go once he saw her heart belonged to another, the older one decided to have her whatever the cost. Or in the words of the street performer Clopin, the story of a man and a monster.
The house of the mouse is no stranger to toning down their literary inspirations to appeal to a general audience. Problem is, with an author as cynnical as Victor Hugo you can only tone down so much before the story loses it's point. So taking a gamble, the end result is a shockingly dark movie that explores authoritarianism, psychological abuse, systemic discrimination, lust, posessiveness and objectification, with some theological unpacking about the nature of sin and virtue at that. Seriously, it says a lot this movie's take on Claude Frollo is the most disturbing villain in the entire Disney canon by a landslide (with some people even having drawn paralels to characters like Griffith from Berserk… and having a point at that).
At least, that's when they don't try to get cute. Either as a genuine but misguided attempt to bring some levity into a movie that can genuinely get intense or a compromise to get the thing greenlit, the addition of the comic relief gargoyles and slapstick gags stick out like a sore thumb. And that's not getting into their depiction of the Roma people still potentially falling into stereotypes, but that's a whole separate can of worms.
It's an imperfect package, but a bold move that only could've happened in the Disney Renaissance. Whether it's the powerful human drama, a fantastic central cast of heroes, a breathtaking visual rendition of the Notre Dame Cathedral or the majestic score by Alan Menken. its strengths do outweight its weaknesses.
Tumblr media
And do not misunderstand my words. The movie IS drastically different from the book as most of the cast was given a more sympathetic and audience appropriate portrayal(the way Phoebus is portrayed is night and day compared to the novel). Still, in contrast to many of the Disney adaptations they still had to bite the bullet when it comes to some of the thematic content.

'Justice League: War' – superheroes collide on HBO Max
Justice League: War (2014) reimagines the first meeting of the DC superhero stars: Superman (voiced by Alan Tudyk), Batman (Jason O’Mara), Wonder Woman (Michelle Monaghan), Green Lantern (Justin Kirk), The Flash (Christopher Gorham), and less obviously Shazam (aka Captain Marvel) (Sean Astin) and Cyborg (Shemar Moore). They fight the nihilistic Darkseid here, the most powerful of DC’s villains,…

NFL Week 2
Tumblr media
I’d have to check this next statement for actually facts. But, I believe Mike Evans either has tied Larry Fitzgerald for 9 consecutive seasons with 1000 yards. Or he set the record for most 1000 yard seasons to open a career. Either way, this is really impressive considering all the variables that go into maintaining such consistency. Staying healthy is the real key and Mike Evans has built a resume that could withstand any argument as a top wideout in his era.
This past Sunday Evans talent was on full display. Mike caught 6 balls for 171 yards and 1 touchdown. Evans most exciting play came on a pass that he out jumped a defender and raced for a 75-yard gain while being pushed out at the 5-yard line. His touchdown came on a simple go route that Evans made look too easy.
Tumblr media
Mama there goes that man! Damn! Justin Jefferson is really good. Against one of the better cover corner’s in the NFL (Darius Slay), Jefferson had his way all afternoon. Catch after catch Jefferson made Slay earn his paycheck. Jefferson ended the night with 11 catches for 159 yards with zero scores. Jefferson ran the route tree and is only improving. I love how his run after catch has improved and he’s playing with more tenacity. If he continues to play at this pace, I believe he can be the first wideout to eclipse 2000 yards.
Tumblr media
Puka Nacua is making sure the NFL knows his name loud and clear. Setting an NFL rookie record with most catches in the first two games of the season (25). Nacua is picking up what the team is missing from injured All-Pro Cooper Kupp. I won’t rain on Nacua’s parade but what he’s doing is leading me to look at Kupp’s record setting season as a by product of Matthew Stafford.
Think about it. Stafford was the QB of the Detroit Lions when Calvin Johnson set the record for most yards in a season with 1964.  Stafford won the Super Bowl the year Kupp became the #2 yards leader in NFL history with 1947. I would not be surprised if similar numbers are achieved by Nacua especially if Kupp lingers on IR for about half the season.
Nacua caught 15 passes for 147 yards with zero scores. His play matched the intensity and toughness of the San Francisco 49ers defense. I love how physical the rookie is playing. Catching slants over the middle is no easy task at any level, especially the hard hitting NFL. I regard the 49ers defense as the best in football and watching the kid carve a hole in the defense lets me know he’s going to have a very productive season.
Tumblr media
Nico Collins is making his first appearance on this blog with a healthy performance against the Indianapolis Colts. Collins caught 7 balls for 146 yards and 1 touchdown. Nico caught a slant on his first pass and raced 45 yards before eventually being tackled. Collins lone touchdown came on what looked like a busted coverage. I think rookie CJ Stroud has found his go to wideout and I look forward to the kid having more 100 yard games this season.
Tumblr media
Ceedee Lamb is making his first appearance of the 2023 season. Against one of the better corners (Sauce Gardner) and a pretty good New York Jets defense, Lamb licked his chops all over the field this past Sunday. Ceedee caught 11 passes for 143 yards. I like that he’s playing aggressive and being physical at the point of attack. He’s now in his 3rd season and looking like the #1 wideout team owner Jerry Jones thought he could be.
Tumblr media
Speed kills! Devonta Smith is a speedster like the road runner. The majority of his yardage came on two deep shots from Jalen Hurts with one being slightly under thrown. That didn’t matter as Smith jumped over the defender, Moss’n him in the process to complete the catch. Devonta’s touchdown came on a go-route that the defender was sitting on. Smith ran right by him on his way to the end zone for a 63-yard touchdown.
Tumblr media
George Pickens is a name I have never heard of either. But after the game he had against divisional rival Cleveland Browns, I’m sure I won’t forget his name nor his game moving forward. Pickens only caught 4 of the 10 balls targeted in his direction. On a long 3 and forever, Pickens inside released on a speed dig and galloped his way 71-yards for a touchdown. Pickens finished the night with 127 yards to give his team the much needed victory.
Tumblr media
It’s good to see Keenan Allen back carving up defenses across the NFL. The Allen of old would have a great game to then be sidelined the next week. But the 2023 Allen is a different animal. The thing I pick up in his body language is that’s he’s fully healthy and happy. Against the Tennessee Titans, Allen had 8 catches for 111 yards and 2 touchdowns. His team took home the Loss but personally the day was a win for Allen.
Tumblr media
Christian Kirk has lived up to the big contract he signed last summer worth $72 million dollars . Against the Kansas City Chiefs, Kirk made his presence felt early and quite often. Christian caught 11 passes for 110 yards. Kirk didn’t score but I look forward to him continuing to dominate from the slot.
Tumblr media
DJ Moore was traded this off-season to the Carolina Panthers. I feel this was an upgrade for the Panthers but a mistake by the New Orleans Saints. Moore caught 6 passes for 104 yards. He didn’t go deep but ran a couple dig routes that turned defenders around. As he and quarterback Bryce Young chemistry grows I expect Moore to have more than a few 100-yard games this season.
Tumblr media
This last wideout had his first 100-yard game of the season. I’ll always root for the kid to do good because I coached him in high school. Amon-Ra St. Brown will get paid this off-season especially if he has his 3rd straight 1000 yard season. Against the falcons he was used all over the field. St. Brown caught balls from out wide, in the slot, and from the backfield. Amon-Ra caught 6 passes for 102 yards with zero scores.
Sorry this blog is a late but as long as it gets done that’s all that matters. After watching the tape I’m going to give Keenan Allen the WOW award (wideoutoftheweek) because he scored twice and at the end of the day the wideouts get paid to score.

Another Happy Day (2011)
In today's review, i find that weddings and family drama make for an explosive mix As I attempt a #positive review of the 2011 film Another Happy Day #EllenBarkin #KateBosworth #EllenBurstyn #ThomasHadenChurch #GeorgeKennedy #EzraMiller #DemiMoore #SiobhanFallonHogan #MichaelNardelli #LolaKirke
Family reunions can be a joyous time, but it can also be a contentious time, where hidden drama and interpersonal politics can rear their head. Unresolved issues can reach boiling point at the supposedly merry occasion typically reserved for frivolity and merriment. In 2011, following the spy-filled antics of Operation: Endgame, Sam Levinson turned the simmer down and heated some family drama in…

John passed away recently, and he was someone I knew from my poetry days. 5x Grammy Winners Naomi Raine and Chandler Moore Deliver Hope For The Broken On “Paul And Silas,” Out Now
Tumblr media
Naomi Raine. Media Image.
On April 14, two 5x GRAMMY-winning artists come together on a healing new song with a message of hope for the lost and broken. Powerhouse vocalist Naomi Raine’s new single “Paul And Silas (At Midnight),” featuring Chandler Moore (Justin Bieber, Maverick City Music), is out now. It is the latest from Raine’s forthcoming debut live album ‘Cover The Earth,’ set to release June 2 via TRIBL Records.
Listen to “Paul And Silas (At Midnight)” here: orcd.co/jdj9va4
Watch Naomi and Chandler perform the new track here: youtu.be/OpvP7YrYc88
Showcasing the breathtaking vocals and versatility from Raine and Moore, “Paul And Silas (At Midnight)” is a reminder that joy can be found even in the darkest moments of life. The track blends convicting, traditional gospel sounds with contemporary and world music. It is an extension of the transcending style the two are known for as part of Maverick City Music.
Kirk Franklin says the vocalists are “the next generation of gospel music,” and it’s easy to see and hear that they are the face of the next wave of inspiration. Raine and Moore performed at the GRAMMY Awards alongside Quavo as part of the tribute to the late Migos member Takeoff.
“Paul And Silas (At Midnight)” follows Raine’s ethereal “One Name (Jesus)” – both of which are on her new 14-track album that features collaborations with 9x GRAMMY-nominee Natalie Grant, Todd Dulaney and Lizzie Morgan (Maverick City Music) — all recorded in Raine’s hometown of New York City.
The worship leader, mom and dynamic vocalist has won GRAMMY, NAACP, Stellar, BET, Billboard and Dove Awards. She has performed on the BET Awards, GRAMMY Awards and more. Recently named a Pandora 2023 Artist To Watch, she is poised for her breakout year.
Later this month, she will launch her co-headlining trek on the first-of-its-kind, female-led It’s Time Tour 2023 with Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Natalie Grant, TAYA, Tamela Mann and Katie Torwalt. The tour will stop in Atlanta, New York, Nashville and more before wrapping up in Los Angeles in June.
