23, 25, 26?
23. Fics I wanted to write but didn't.
There are two on my to be done list that I haven't even gotten close to writing. The first one is the Ducks take a senior trip to Disney World. That one mainly hasn't gotten written because I've never been to Disney World, and I don't really know how I would go about that one. The other one is Adam cussing in front of Connie and Guy's toddler. I started on it, but I just never got into the flow of it, so it's unfinished.
25. A fic I read this year that I would recommend everyone read.
This is a hard one because I feel like there's a lot of stories that I've read that are very good. I'm going to do two.
The first one is Volatile by Kay. The story has so much feeling behind it, and it was one of the only fanfics that's ever made me cry.
The second one would be Center of Attention by 411/Gaffney. This was the fic that actually got me back into writing. It was written so well that it got me excited about the fandom, and it really made me fall in love with Charlie and Adam as a couple.
26. Number of favorites/bookmarks you've made this year.
I actually only have 19 new bookmarks that I made this year. However, I'm notorious for forgetting to bookmark things, so it's not a good tell of how much I've read probably.

❛ Where did you get this? ❜ would be fun for murmur (if you’re still writing for it!!) maybe Vivi being a little bastard <3
Mischief | Murmur
Parent!reesker; vivi has the bastard gene
Prompt: “Where did you get this?”
Word count: 995
CW: n/a
***
It wasn’t every day that both Sarah and her girlfriend were home during normal work hours, especially on a weekday afternoon. Vivienne’s pediatrician appointments required them to go outside of Gaffney, though, so the couple had scheduled to be off. Their daughter had been quite happy with the arrangement and enjoyed a day out with her mothers even if it was mostly spent in the hospital anyway.
They had gotten home just before their usual supper time, leaving Ava some time to get ready for her night shift. With a few late surgeries scheduled so she didn’t fall behind, the surgeon had planned to leave before 7:00 so she had just enough time to say goodnight to Vivi.
“Darling?” the woman in question’s voice travelled down the hall and tore Sarah’s attention away from the dishes she had been putting away. Ava peeked around the corner not long after, tugging her scrub top down over the green long sleeve she had donned first, “Have you seen my stethoscope?”
“Not today,” she answered, “Where did you have it last?”
“I thought it was in my bag… maybe I left it in my locker yesterday though.”
The brunette nodded at that suggestion, “Could’ve, check the living room just in case.”
Ava agreed but went back towards the bedrooms to look for their daughter first. Vivi had run off to play with Winnie the second she had let the corgi off his harness, signalling to her dog that he was off duty. The service animal was of course still on alert for any changes in the child’s vitals but he also loved to have time to play at home. Ava could hear squeaking coming from the sticker decorated door down the hall and she knew she would probably find a mess of both Vivi’s things and dog toys. It was like having two small children in their home, if she was honest, but Ava couldn’t say Winnie hadn’t grown on her by then.
“Bee? I’m going to work,” she walked into the room but stopped short when she saw the sight in front of her. Her daughter was indeed playing in a pile of her toys, Winnie by her side while he chewed on his favourite bunny plushie. Vivienne, however, was ignoring her own mess and instead had the medical instrument her mother had been searching for in her hands. She didn’t have the earpieces in properly, since they were far too big for her small ears, but she was pressing the diaphragm of the stethoscope to Winnie’s white chest. The dog seemed unbothered, tail wagging the second he saw his owner walk into the room.
“Vivienne…”
The seven year old looked up at her mother with a gap-toothed grin, “Mummy, ‘m listenin’ to Winnie’s heart!”
“I see that,” she crouched down and gently took the instrument from her ears, “Where did you get this?”
Her tiny brow furrowed when her toy was taken away, though she clearly realized she shouldn’t have had it in the first place, “Mummy’s bag…”
“Do we take things from my bag? Or from mama’s?”
“No…”
“Right,” Ava hung the stethoscope around her neck as she answered, “Don’t take things without asking, understood?”
“But I want to play doctors with Winnie,” Vivi pouted, “He’s my patient!”
“Vivi, you know how when Winnie has his harness on he’s medical equipment and not a dog to play with?”
The child nodded hard enough that her blonde curls fell into her eyes, “He watches Vivi’s heart!”
“He does,” she agreed, “Mummy’s stethoscope does that for her patient’s hearts too. You can’t take it away or I can’t do my job properly. It’s like if someone distracted your dog when he’s working.”
“Oh…just wanted to play.”
“I know, but you need to ask first. We have your doctor’s kit in your toy box and you can always use the stethoscope from there. The real ones are special for my and Mama’s jobs, right?”
“Right.”
“Good,” Ava could tell her daughter was upset with being scolded and she sighed, “I’m not angry, Viv. We don’t take things that aren’t ours, though, okay?”
“‘Kay, Mummy.”
“Alright, can I have a hug before I leave for work?”
That made the child perk up a bit and she hopped to her feet, making Winnie look up at her and woof warningly. Standing too quickly could make her hypotensive, Vivi knew that, but she didn’t pay any mind to it. Instead she stumbled over the mess of toys to throw her arms around Ava’s shoulders, mumbling an apology into her carefully curled hair.
“It’s alright, Vivienne, just remember what we talked about next time. You sleep well tonight and I will see you tomorrow.”
“See you ‘morrow,” she nodded, “Love you, mummy.”
“I love you too, my honeybee,” Ava promised as she pressed a kiss to her temple, “Can you tidy up before bedtime so mama doesn’t have to?”
“I try,” she agreed and watched Ava stand up to leave. The woman leaned down again to pat their dog gently, which earned her hand a large lick from the corgi in question. She laughed and wiped her hand on her pant leg, mumbling a lighthearted complaint about the dog slobber. Saying goodbye to her daughter one more time, Ava left the room to gather her things.
“Did you find your stethoscope?” Sarah met her in the living room, her tablet in hand as she settled down in the armchair she loved so dearly.
“Yes, we have a thief on our hands.”
“Vivi?” Sarah laughed when Ava nodded, “Did you talk to her?”
“I did, she said she wouldn’t do it again but I’m sure her thieving days are just beginning,” the blonde shook her head fondly, “And it looks like a tornado tore through her toybox.”
“Oh Lord,” Sarah sighed, “Not again.”

She’s the Cutest… But We’re Just Friends!, Vol. 2
By Akamitsu Awamura and mmu. Released in Japan as “Ore no Onna Tomodachi ga Saikou ni Kawaii” by GA Bunko. Released in North America by J-Novel Club. Translated by airco.
There’s a narrowing of focus in this second volume. In the first book, we got to see a whole lot of Kai and Jun’s peers, classmates, and rivals and see how their “relationship” impacted all of them. For the most part, there’s very little of that in the second volume. Indeed, Reina, my favorite character from the last book, has a much smaller role here, though she certainly makes use of it, seeing what the rest of the cast don’t. But for the most part this volume deals only with three characters: Kai, Jun, and Kotobuki, the girl who confessed to him in the cliffhanger of the last book. I was honestly worried about the addition of Kotobuki after that last book, fearing this would become a “one girl per book” sort of harem series. Fortunately, my worries were unfounded – I’d argue this book is better than the last one, getting into the nitty gritty of friends vs. girlfriends and coming out on the friends side.
Kotobuki has indeed confessed to Kai, and suggests dating in order to get to know each other, an idea that floors him because he’s read too much manga and believes you only date AFTER falling in love The date actually goes pretty well, and they’re a cute couple. Then they coincidentally run into Jun on their date… and she can’t get over how CUTE Kotobuki is! No jealousy on her end at all. The trouble is the other end… Kotobuki had heard that Kai had a friend who came over to play games, but assumed it was, well, a female otaku stereotype. Not a stacked blonde goddess. Feeling a bit desperate and threatened, she decides to up her seduction game… which proves to be EXACTLY the wrong move. Can she and Kai recover from the backlash? And can you have a girlfriend and also have a close female friend who’s even more tactile than your girlfriend?
The most interesting thing about this book is that the drama is almost entirely one-sided. Jun is simply not remotely getting jealous, loves Kotobuki to death, and her reaction to Kai accidentally walking in on her topless is nonexistent. If the series is eventually going to get Kai and Jun together, it’s got a long way to go on Jun’s side. That said, she fills an important role here, as she allows Kai and Kotobuki to recover from their dating mishap and find steadier ground. Kai, like Jun, does not feel mature enough to be in a relationship, something that Kotobuki also realizes about herself during the course of the book. Indeed, the book may be an ad for “just friends”, as the best scenes in it are the ones with no tension or romantic angst, just the three of them hanging out and having fun. (It’s also a giant ad for anime and manga properties, and not just GA Bunko series. The lack of censorship is jaw-dropping.)
Unfortunately, after two quick volumes in February and June of 2020, there has been no more of this series in Japan. I hope we eventually get some closure. In the meantime, this is a good one if you like romcoms with a bit less drama than usual.

Homicide: The Movie
Tumblr media
Does it pass the Bechdel Test?
Yes, once.
How many female characters (with names and lines) are there?
Eleven (28.94% of cast).
How many male characters (with names and lines) are there?
Twenty-seven.
Positive Content Rating:
Three.
General Film Quality:
Definitely not a strong finish to the series, but then again, neither was anything in the final season of the actual show, either. You could skip this and not really be missing out. In fact, you might be better off that way.

OTHER NOTES:
Considering this film is set not long after season seven ended, it’s kinda weird that Gee has apparently gone from his newly-appointed Captainship to campaigning for Mayor in that time. I mean, I’m not surprised that he would be bored out of his mind in Property Crimes, but this is quite the sudden leap for a guy who never expressed a desire or inclination for a political career.
The old credit sequence is back! Wouldn’t have been right to finish without it.
SPEAKING OF OLD THINGS THAT ARE BACK:
Tumblr media
Forget about Gee’s career shift being weird: what the heck with fucking GHARTY being Homicide’s shift commander now? Remember four years ago in-show, when he was introduced as a cowardly derelict-in-his-duties uniform officer just trying to make it to his pension (only a few months off at that time)? How does that guy make it to Lieutenant in four years? Seems fucking ridiculous.
Mike Giardello going on a rampage beating the shit out of people is objectively uncool, but the decision to have Mike Kellerman tagging along watching him while casually snacking makes the whole sequence hilarious.
It’s been so many hours since Gee was shot, where the heck are his other kids, huh? I feel like they’re conveniently pretending they don’t exist so that they can focus on making his bond with Mike seem especially ~profound~. It’s too late in the game for the father/son Ultimate Bond cliche, y’all.
Why the fuck Gharty talking about putting up with being a ‘stooge’ in order to get off the street, instead of just taking that Goddamn retirement? What a tiresome man. I can’t believe we wasted literally any scenes at all on giving him a weak excuse for a subplot-esque thing, when we’ve got all of these other great characters running around getting about three spoken lines and zero functional purpose. Urgh.
Bayliss confessing to the Ryland murder to Pembleton is a great scene, but it feels out of place in the film, and disingenuous as a plot development for the characters - considering it’s the last development they ever get, I really don’t think it’s a meaningful conclusion (individually or as a partnership), and it takes a mainstay of the series at its best - the writing, acting, and chemistry that made Pembleton and Bayliss the show’s flagship team - and perverts it with the kind of dramatic contrivance that was a mainstay of the series at its worst.
Tumblr media
Lewis just gotta bring up Bayliss’ sexuality, coz he’s a jerk.
The afterlife scene is super weird and not a strong ending for the entire series in the slightest (the dialogue there feels especially stilted), but I am delighted that they took the excuse to include Crosetti and Felton, and complete the set by getting every single major character from the series back again, living and dead.
Tumblr media
I mean, yes, I am delighted that I got to see EVERYONE one last time, but it made for a wildly overstuffed hour-and-a-half film, and almost none of those characters were used to meaningful effect. Essentially, having the entire cast back is a gimmick - and a gimmick that I love - but consequently the plot has no idea what to do with itself, characters drift in and out of it and mostly achieve nothing more than just physically being there for the sake of it, and thus there’s almost no building of emotional resonance or even the natural tension which should arise from having our beloved shift commander shot. More than anything, this feels like an excuse to bring Bayliss and Pembleton together one last time, and I certainly understand that temptation, but it’s a bad move in terms of actually telling the story of the film (which involves thirty-six other named and speaking characters who are not Bayliss and Pembleton, lest we forget).
Additionally, the movie is dotted with useless extras that have nothing to do with the core narrative and only serve to waste vital time which could have been better invested giving one of the many underused characters something to do (the pointlessness of Detective Hall, who was not part of the original series and has no impact upon this film now, is chief in my mind on this score - adding drama by having the shooter in the hospital was also a time-waster), but then again, even the scenes which DID use our old characters were largely red herrings that could be excised from the film completely without altering the story at all. In some cases, that really would have been an improvement, since the movie doesn’t even pretend to treat Little Gee’s rampage as anything other than a pointless dead end, nor Munch and Bolander’s visit to the African Revival Movement, Sheppard and Lewis’ interview with the white supremacist (who was never part of the original series either), or Howard and Falsone’s visit to the widow Desassi. All of these scenes exist purely so that those other characters can do One Single Thing as if it will magically legitimise their presence, while Bayliss and Pembleton unsurprisingly take up the bulk of screen time and are the only ones who uncover anything useful (seriously, they’re even the ones who notice the gunsmoke on the video, even though Ballard and Stivers were assigned to review the footage. Fucking script couldn’t even give some other characters just one genuinely useful thing to do in all this useless mess).
Altogether, the whole thing feels massively under-cooked as a story in its own right, and it has nothing to say about the show, its legacy, what it meant or why it existed in the first place. Homicide was never about Al Giardello’s command, any more than it was about Bayliss and Pembleton’s partnership. Then again, this movie isn’t really about those things either, they’re just the only aspects it manages to carve out with anything close to clarity. Ultimately, I’m not so sure this movie was about anything.

Manga the Week of 9/15/21
SEAN: Gonna start reversing the list more often as, no offense to Seven Seas, I am tired of Airship getting the first image every week.
So we start with Yen On, who have a plethora of “delayed from August… and July” debuts for us! Four of them, in fact.
Bond and Book (Musubu to Hon) is a new series from the author of the Book Girl light novels, which I greatly enjoyed when they came out ages ago. Sadly, they came out before the LN boom, so sold poorly – I hope this does better. It seems to be a linked story series, as the books overall involve a young man who can “hear the voices of books”, and each book has him dealing with a specific problem. The first is called The Devotion of “The Surgery Room” (a short story by Japanese author Kyōka Izumi).
ASH: This sounds right up my alley. I, too, enjoyed what I read of Book Girl and I like book-ish type stories.
SEAN: Second we have If the RPG World Had Social Media… (Moshi Role Playing Game no Sekai ni SNS ga Attara), a series which I’m going to take a wild guess is a comedy. Would you challenge the demon lord via text?
Third we have Magistellus Bad Trip. A Certain Magical Index may be dead in North America, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a new series by the same author. A VR city with gambling and high stakes is about to be taken by a young man and his succubus partner.
Lastly, we get a spinoff from The Irregular at Magic High School, the appropriately named The The Irregular at Magic High School. Seems to be more of a continuation than a legit spinoff – they’re even keeping the numbering, as this is Vol. 17. But it has to be a new series, I’m sure.
ASH: Huh! That’s an interesting way of doing it.
SEAN: Viz Media debuts Mao, the new Rumiko Takahashi series. This runs in Weekly Shonen Sunday, and is definitely a step back towards serious supernatural/horror themed stories.
MICHELLE: Kinda curious about this one.
ASH: Same!
MELINDA: And me!
SEAN: Also from Viz: a double shot of Kenjiro Hata, as we get Fly Me to the Moon 7 and Hayate the Combat Butler 38. Other than that, it’s tie-ins galore, as we see Kirby Manga Mania 2, Pokemon: Sun & Moon 11, Splatoon 13, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess 9, and YO-KAI WATCH 18.
Tokyopop has A Gentle Noble’s Vacation Recommendation 4.
SuBLime debuts Black or White (Kuro ka Shiro ka), which runs in Kadokawa’s Emerald. Two actors who are typecast in roles they’d rather not be doing are secretly lovers.
ASH: I’m looking forward to giving this one a try.
MELINDA: That does sound interesting, actually.
SEAN: Also from SuBLime, we have Jealousy 4 and Given 6.
MICHELLE: I am so behind on Given already.
ASH: I’m a bit behind, too, despite enjoying the series!
SEAN: Square Enix has the 4th volume of A Man and His Cat.
MICHELLE: Yay!
MELINDA: Another yay!
SEAN: Another small week from Seven Seas. They have The Ideal Sponger Life 9, Plus-Sized Elf 7, and Reincarnated As a Sword 7.
One Peace debuts Multi-Mind Mayhem (Isekai Tensei Soudouki), based on the as yet unlicensed light novel. This story of a man with three different souls in his body – his own, a Japanese samurai, and a Japanese otaku – comes from Alpha Polis.
ASH: I am possibly intrigued.
SEAN: Kodansha, in print, has Orient 4 and A School Frozen in Time 3.
MICHELLE: I enjoyed the first volume of A School Frozen in Time.
ASH: I still need to read it, but I do have a copy!
SEAN: Digitally, as always, much more. Two debuts. Turns Out My Online Friend is My Real-Life Boss! (Online Game Nakama to Sashi Off shitara Shokuba no Onijoushi ga Kita) is a BL title from Ichijinsha’s Gateau, about a guy who tries to destress after days dealing with his evil boss by talking with a gaming friend online. then they meet up in real life and… yeah, you guessed it.
The other debuts is also BL and also from Ichijinsha’s Gateau. We’re On Our Own From Here (Konosaki wa Futarikiride) is a high school romance between two boys, spurred on by a girl seemingly confessing to one.
MICHELLE: This looks really cute!
MELINDA: I’m a sucker for this type of story.
SEAN: There’s also Abe-kun’s Got Me Now! 7, Ace of the Diamond 34, Giant Killing 26, Police in a Pod 4, The Springtime of My Life Began with You 4, Tokyo Revengers 22, We Must Never Fall in Love 8, and Yamaguchi-kun Isn’t So Bad 2.
MICHELLE: Lots of stuff here that I’m interested in! Mostly the sports, not gonna lie.
ASH: I’ll admit to being fond of sports manga, too.
SEAN: J-Novel Club debuts Dragon Daddy Diaries: A Girl Grows to Greatness (Totsuzen Papa ni Natta Saikyou Dragon no Kosodate Nikki: Kawaii Musume, Honobono to Ningenkai Saikyou ni Sodatsu), a title from the author of Sexiled and A Lily Blooms in Another World, so again, I would not worry about daddy-daughter issues here. This looks super cute, and is about what you’d expect: a dragon adopting and raising a human child.
ASH: Another book to add to the list to check out!
Also on the light novel tip from J-Novel Club: The Apothecary Diaries 3, Culinary Chronicles of the Court Flower 3, Perry Rhodan NEO 3, The Sidekick Never Gets the Girl, Let Alone the Protag’s Sister! 2, and A Wild Last Boss Appeared! 6.
Lastly we have Airship. In print, they’ve got How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom 12 and Muscles Are Better Than Magic! 3.
Two early digital debuts. The Most Notorious “Talker” Runs the World’s Greatest Clan (Saikyou no Shien-shoku “Wajutsushi” Dearu ore wa Sekai Saikyou Kuran o Shitagaeru). Sigh. Weak. But really strong. Betrayed. Evil? Probably, but he’s our hero. Moving on.
Planet of the Orcs is from Kodansha’s Legend Novels line, and therefore I expect it to be pretentious as hell, even though when I look at the premise all I can do is sing “ORCS WITH GUNS!” to the tune of Duran Duran’s Girls on Film.
That’s a big chunk of stuff… but is it for you?
