WESTERN WEDNESDAY

Uncivilised hilarity in 'Support your local Sheriff'

'Support your Local Sheriff's most humourous moments were in the opening third. We see the town of Calendar, which has become a gold town. Hundreds flock there in search of gold and fortune. This results in the town being a chaotic mess, with fights breaking out every second. For me, the most humourous moments were the portion that focused on people in riding into town. The heaving crowds were always cheering, throwing their hats and shooting their guns in the air for no real reason what so ever. For some reason, this just tickled me. Just to imagine this town full of men who were either fighting or cheering constantly. It's the little details that make this film so funny, like, the bunch of wild dogs running around in almost every scene of the town. These small details were the cherry on top for this film. The performances by Burt Kennedy, Joan Hackett and, my personal favourite, Bruce Dern added much hilarity too.

Strength through Silence-a character study of John Gant in, 'No name on the Bullet'

John Gant, portrayed amazingly by Audie Murphy, is a notorious hired gun who never leaves his target alive. So when he appears in Lordsburg the townsfolk become paranoid fearing that their treacherous pasts have caught up to them. This gives every scene with John Gant a powerful sense of gravitas. Everyone is fearful and worried around him, whilst he stays reserved and emotionally blank in the face of the panic and paranoia around him. Gant's signature was agitating his target to a point of conflict so his kill would be classed as self-defence. Essentially, tormenting the target before killing them. Through all of this fear, one man treats Gant like every other, a doctor by the name of Luke Canfield, played by Charles Drake. Gant and Canfield's relationship start cordial but after Gant's presence causes a man to commit suicide, Canfield knew that Gant had to be stopped. By the end of the movie, Gant and Canfield have a strange respect for each other, despite their hatred. When Gant finally pulled a gun on the doctor, Canfield disarmed him instead of killing him. Gant leaves the doctor alive and admits his respect to him, before disappearing into the wild west.

John Gant is a man who relishes the power he has over people. It's his sole motivation in life. He doesn't just kill for the money but for the pride and position, it gives him in society. His presence and gaze caused a man to take his own life. However, when met with a man unfazed by all of this, a man who is driven to stop John Gant peacefully. John Gant can't go through with killing him. He has too much respect for the man to kill him.

John Gant is a man who sees himself as justified, but when it comes to a man he respects, who hasn't wronged anyone. He struggles. I think Gant said it best in this quote.

" Take two men. Say they have robbed and lied, and have never paid. The man whom one of them has robbed comes to me and says, "Kill that man who's robbed me." And I kill him. The other man becomes ill and would die, except for a physician who returns him to health to rob and lie again. Who's the villain in this piece? Me or the physician?"

The satirical insanity of Blazing Saddles

Blazing Saddles is a wacky, surreal comedy, in the same vein as 'Airplane!'. However, underneath these layers of insanity, 'Blazing Saddles' is a satire of the Western genre. One of my personal favourite satirical jokes is the fact everyone in the town is called Johnson, a name prominent throughout the genre as a whole. Gene Wilder's character, Jim, is a satirical look on the typical washed up gunfighter that is a common trope in the genre as a whole. He used to be the 'fastest gun in the west', which is quite literal in this case. However, when a child shot him in the butt, which turned him to alcohol. Blazing Saddles takes this genre trope and exaggerates it to a point of hilarity.
