Nightbirds by Kate J. Armstrong
As of... let me see it is currently 8:06 pm mountain time on November 19, 2022, and I am 25% into this wonderful book! I snagged a physical copy of it when I was in Charleston for YallFest 2022, and it's due to come out February 2023! The synopsis is below:
Tumblr media
"In a dazzling new fantasy world full of whispered secrets and political intrigue, the magic of women is outlawed but four girls with unusual powers have the ability to change it all.
The Nightbirds are Simta’s best kept secret. Teenage girls from the Great Houses with magic coursing through their veins, the Nightbirds have the unique ability to gift their magic to others with a kiss. Magic—especially the magic of women—is outlawed and the city’s religious sects would see them burned if discovered. But protected by the Great Houses, the Nightbirds are safe well-guarded treasures.
As this Season’s Nightbirds, Matilde, Aesa, and Sayer spend their nights bestowing their unique brands of magic to well-paying clients. Once their Season is through, they're each meant to marry a Great House lord and become mothers to the next generation of Nightbirds before their powers fade away. But Matilde, Aesa, and Sayer have other plans. They know their lives as Nightbirds aren't just temporary, but a complete lie and yearn for something more.
When they discover that there are other girls like them and that their magic is more than they were ever told, they see the carefully crafted Nightbird system for what it is: a way to keep them in their place, first as daughters and then as wives. Now they must make a choice—to stay in their gilded cage or to remake the city that put them there in the first place."
So I'm going to be posting about my progress and thoughts on the book. For those of you who don't know, most physical arcs come with a suggested age range on the back, and I hope that's so we can give input on that. I think the writing is excellent and it's such a unique take on this sort of story!
My only major concern is that the suggested age range says 12+, but within the first quarter of this book, I thought someone was about to be sexually assaulted, which as I've read a little further, the character thought so as well, and they straight up refer to the "housing" as a brothel. And considering that 12 is 1-2 years after "the talk" where I come from, I'm just imagining if I ever had kids, my kid coming up to me and asking what a brothel was. That being said, I think 14 and up is probably honestly the perfect age range for this, that age, most people know these sorts of things, and aren't as uncomfortable, plus some of the word usage may not be as difficult to understand! I'll update again if something massive happens that is shocking, or otherwise, again at the halfway mark!

My Rating: ★★★★★
My Review and Favorite Quotes below the cut.
My Review:
This was a lot twistier and heavier than I was expecting. It's full of secrets and lies and betrayals and political machinations, and centers on four incredibly strong young women. I found myself just along for the ride as I was breathlessly hurtled through the twists and turns of the plot, never knowing who to trust or where danger might spring from next. The magic is darker than I expected but also quite beautiful. There are moments of light throughout the novel but it is a heavy read and a very dense one. The writing is gorgeous and I highlighted several passages that I found beautifully written and very profound. Sometimes you find a story that is a cracking good story but also gets at an underlying truth. This is one of those stories. Also the sheer feminist rage I felt whilst reading this was something else. These four women are incredibly strong and resilient and so, so angry at being torn down and persecuted and caged by the men in their lives. The book leaves off on not-quite-a-cliffhanger, but certainly nothing is settled. The four women are finding themselves and their inner strength but there is still a long way to go before they, and the other magical girls of Simta, can be safe. I absolutely cannot wait for the next book. *Thanks to Bookishfirst and Penguin Teen for providing an early copy for review.
Favorite Quotes:
Matilde slips on her Goldfinch mask. It’s like a second skin: her truest face and best lie.
---
Sit tight, be quiet, stay secret: It’s all they seem to hear lately. Fold your wings and close your pretty eyes.
---
Fenlin tips back her mask, revealing a sharp jaw, a green eyepatch, and a devastating mouth. A kissable one, if you like a dash of lethal with your trysts.
---
It isn’t posed as a question, but an answer, writing over any she might give. He sounds like Enis when he said they were meant for each other, like the man in Leta’s ballroom when he commanded her to dance. All different men, but their words served the same purpose. To tell her who she is, what she is for. To drown her voice.
---
Her grandda always said she had a sheldar singing through her. Just listen for her tune and have the courage to answer. Perhaps courage is a thing you choose, like friendship. It’s choosing to have faith in the voice within.

For my first post to my brand new booklr, I thought I would share the 12 books being released in 2023 that I'm most excited to read! I'm especially looking forward to getting my grubby little mitts upon Alecto the Ninth (whilst also simultaneously never wanting the locked tomb series to ever end), but I'm really hoping I'll still find some new favourite reads amongst the others on my list! There's also a good mix of authors I have only read one book or one series from (Seanan Mcguire, S.A. Chakraborty, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, T. Kingfisher) vs authors I haven't read from before (Cherie Dimaline, Roshani Chokshi, Dorothy Tse, Katherine May, Kate J Armstrong & Amy kKey), so I'll be so interested to see if I gain any new favourite authors to read some backlist books from too!
Here's to hoping for an excellent reading year for all of us in 2023!

Oh I’m very very interested in your nonfiction book recs 👀
EDIT: ykw I'm gonna make this a little more organized
I listed a bunch in this post (the last question) but lemme see if I have any additions because I know I was kinda trying to keep it short when I wrote that. (But that being said, that post is the Top Faves Of All Time, so go for those first.)
Freaky medical shit I also liked:
The Fever: How Malaria Has Ruled Humankind for 500,000 Years by Sonia Shah
The Barbary Plague: The Black Death in Victorian San Francisco by Marilyn Chase (I just read this a few weeks ago and OOUUUGGHHHHHH IT'S LITERALLY JUST. LIKE THE RESPONSE TO COVID.)
The Ghost Map: The Story of London's Most Terrifying Epidemic—and How It Changed Science, Cities, and the Modern World by Steven Johnson
Political shit I also liked:
Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the Twenty-First Century edited by Alice Wong
The Viral Underclass: The Human Toll When Inequality and Disease Collide by Steven W. Thrasher
Immigrants, Evangelicals, and Politics in an Era of Demographic Change by Janelle S. Wong
History I also liked:
Triangle: The Fire That Changed America by David Von Drehle
The Hamlet Fire: A Tragic Story of Cheap Food, Cheap Government, and Cheap Lives by Bryant Simon (between those two you can tell I was on a bit of a "workplace tragedies caused by lax regulations and bad management" kick)
The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women by Kate Moore (I think everyone knows about this book, including it for completeness)
Promised the Moon: The Untold Story Of The First Women In The Space Race by Stephanie Nolen
The Women's House of Detention: A Queer History of a Forgotten Prison by Hugh Ryan
Butts: A Backstory by Heather Radke (this is nowhere near as fun and cute as you'd assume from the title)
Memoirs I also liked:
The Less People Know About Us: A Mystery of Betrayal, Family Secrets, and Stolen Identity by Axton Betz-Hamilton (I read this before I really got into nonfiction and it was WILD, I tell people about it all the time)
The Best We Could Do by Thi Bui (this one is a graphic not-novel-I-guess-memoir)
Know My Name by Chanel Miller
Other:
Playing Dead: A Journey Through the World of Death Fraud by Elizabeth Greenwood
A False Report: A True Story of Rape in America by Ken Armstrong, T. Christian Miller
Lost Feast: Culinary Extinction and the Future of Food by Lenore Newman
It Came from the Closet: Queer Reflections on Horror by Joe Vallese
AND here are a few on my TBR that I'm really excited for! I decided not to categorize them because they're almost all history:
Silk and Potatoes: Contemporary Arthurian Fantasy by Adam Roberts
Refusing Compulsory Sexuality: A Black Asexual Lens on Our Sex-Obsessed Culture by Sherronda J. Brown
All the Young Men by Ruth Coker Burks
The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara by David I. Kertzer (I am actually partway through this right now but in a bit of a dry/confusing section)
The Broadcast 41: Women and the Anti-Communist Blacklist by Carol A. Stabile
The Golden Thread: How Fabric Changed History by Kassia St Clair
A Woman of No Importance: The Untold Story of the American Spy Who Helped Win World War II by Sonia Purnell (have just barely started this)
Time to Dance, a Time to Die: The Extraordinary Story of the Dancing Plague of 1518 by John Waller
The Memoirs of Lady Hyegyŏng: The Autobiographical Writings of a Crown Princess of Eighteenth-Century Korea by Lady Hyegyeong
Miss Major Speaks: The Life and Times of a Black Trans Revolutionary by Miss Major Griffin-Gracy
Too Hot to Touch: The Problem of High-Level Nuclear Waste by William M. Alley, Rosemarie Alley (I'm in the middle of this but it's surprisingly, um. not exciting.)
Going Postal: Rage, Murder, and Rebellion: From Reagan's Workplaces to Clinton's Columbine and Beyond by Mark Ames
Pressure Cooker: Why Home Cooking Won't Solve Our Problems and What We Can Do About It by Joslyn Brenton, Sinikka Elliott, Sarah Bowen
Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder
The Fabric of Civilization: How Textiles Made the World by Virginia Postrel
Women's Work: The First 20,000 Years Women, Cloth, and Society in Early Times by Elizabeth Wayland Barber
Medieval Gentlewoman: Life in a Gentry Household in the Later Middle Ages by Ffiona Swabey
Hitler's First Victims: The Beginning of the Holocaust and One Man's Fight to End It by Timothy W. Ryback
I am soso normal and have very normal interests that are not at all grim :)

I was tagged by the wonderful @blizzardfluffykpop for this game. It's been a while since I've done a tagged game, so let's do this.
Last Song: my mobile Spotify is saying Wildfire by Monsta X, which I know I was listening to in the car the other day. But I was listening to Kyungsoo on my laptop last night, and I think I heard Lost before going to bed.
Last Movie: The Moon. It was very good, though I spent a lot of my time sitting on the edge of my seat worrying about what would happen next. Korean movies are always more than they appear in the trailer. It was the first time I went to the cinemas in like two years, too, haha.
Currently Reading: I'm trying to finish Nightbirds by Kate J Armstrong (it's okay, but I took a big gap between last reading it and now I don't have much interest), I started Enchanted to Meet You by Meg Cabot last night for book club (It's not as adult as I expected it to be... feels quite juvenile), and I also have Phantom of the Idol vol1 started. It seemed like a cute little manga when I was at the store the other day and picked it up. I've read 123 books this year so far, and I'm very close to my 150 goal 😊
Currently Watching: no shows atm. But an endless amount of YouTube 😅
Current Obsession: making resin crafts. It's so expensive, so I'm trying not to do it too often, but I love to see what comes out of the moulds.
Tagging: @noona-clock @just-some-random-blogger @this-song-thats-only-for-you @tanithrea @soybeantree @jackiejacks923 and anyone else who'd like to give this a go!

Nightbirds & Vibes
I'm loving them. Spoilers below:
He brings over their drinks. Hers is bubbly and violet. She sips it right away without asking what's in it. His eyes follow every move she makes.
"So," he says, sitting opposite. The orblights paint his face with a faint purple glow. "Does this visit mean you've decided to trust me?"
She swirls her drink. She wants to trust him. With so many threats against the Nightbirds, she also wants him on her side.
"You know, I'm rather on the fence about it."
"That won't do." He tilts his head the way he used to when they played games together, waiting for her to make a move. "What else might I do to sway you?"

Record collecting is an expensive hobby but it also honestly brings me so much joy. There’s still so much I want to buy and will buy (tbh) but I keep going to record sales and not remembering what I own and almost buying doubles of the same album, so that’s why this list exists.
