Physical Education, also known as P.E., is a mandatory part of school so it’s no surprise that it appears in high school dramas as well. To amp up the drama, special sports events are often used in scenes. We see this on the field of Moment of Eighteen. Baek Kyung (Lee Jae-wook) and Eun Dan-oh (Kim Hye-yoon) participate in a three-legged race in Extraordinary You. It’s a nice change from their everyday school uniforms.

Speaking of not wearing school uniforms, there are always scenes where we can see students dressed casually outside of school. Sometimes it leads to romantic scenes in an almond farm like in Inheritors or down-to-earth fun with friends in Reply 1988.

tl;dr: Nemo invited both his father and the Songs to his recital. It goes as you would expect.
MARLIN:
 Mu-yeol was not crying, nope. He was one-hundred percent not! Crying!
Right, okay, maybe a little. His son was talented, what can he say? He saw So-yeon’s joy in him when he danced, but most of all she saw his son’s hard work, and it was like he forgot how tired and stressed out he made himself to pay for dance. Seeing Nemo dance made every bit of it worth it.
“Nam-min!” He called to him after the recital, waving him over. 
He was at least thirty percent sure Nemo would turn around and walk away from him...but maybe he’d accept a hug just this once.
 NEMO:
Another recital swept Nemo up into its arms and he danced through it. Nemo had made a new record number for himself too when it came to the number of routines that he’d been cast in, from ballet, street,to contemporary. He found himself running off stage at the end of each number to go back to the dressing rooms, where he stripped off his costume so he could slip into his next one. The speed of it all kept Nemo from thinking too deeply about how this recital was different-- how it wasn’t just Appa in the audience, or Robbie, or Tae, Finn, Louie-- but the Songs. My grandparents, Nemo thought to himself as he wiped sweat from his forehead and then darted back to the stage. Eomma’s parents. Eomma’s sister.
He had to make them proud.
He danced with everything he had. The music resonated through him, turning him into an extension of its notes and its rhythms. When the recital was over and he was back on stage bowing, the applause thundered in his brain and he almost couldn’t believe it. It had gone so so fast. He lifted his face up and smiled out at the crowd, the lights bright in his eyes.
He didn’t even bother to change out of his last outfit. Instead, he headed straight out to the lobby and began to search…
He saw Appa first, and that felt right.
Nemo beamed and darted over to him. With his whole body still buzzing with adrenaline and endorphins, and Appa grinning back at him, the past few weeks were almost insignificant. He had never not hugged Appa after a dance recital. How could he not hug him now?
Nemo didn’t even really think about it, just pushed into Appa’s space and wrapped his arms around him. “Appa!” he exclaimed loudly over the crowd of people. 
 MARLIN:
 Nemo hugged him. Nemo hugged him, and it was only his desire to not embarrass his son that kept him from bursting into tears. He managed to hug Nemo back and not cling to him with too much desperation and pressed a kiss to his forehead. 
“Nam-min!” He reached up to mess with his hair. “You were wonderful, as always. Dance is really your calling, maybe you should look into studying it after you age out of this.”
Yes. He was suggesting university. Why not? His son was too talented to stop at eighteen. 
“I’d hate to see you stop dancing anytime soon.”
NEMO:
Dance is really your calling-- 
Maybe it was. 
The thought had started to sneak in more often since reading Eomma’s journals. As soon as it did though, Nemo shook it off--stamped it out-- blew it away like a leaf caught in a squall. Because ha, it couldn’t be. Nemo hadn’t trained enough. He wasn’t as tall as the best ballerinos nor as strong. He was lacking in many areas, which Appa would never see because he didn’t train and also had his Appa-glasses on at all times…
Plus he was a fairy and he’d never, never, get cast in a company. Why spend money at a uni when it’d never go anywhere…?
But the words still warmed Nemo’s chest and he scrunched his nose for a shy moment. “I won’t stop-- can always teach maybe anyway, though who knows, maybe I’ll be a performance-talent after all.”
 It wouldn’t be the same, of course--Nemo would never be the best at that. But...he was starting to enjoy those lessons as he found ways to work with his small wing to pull off the aerial stunts. 
 MARLIN:
 “And you would be the best in the Hollow.” Mu-yeol said, smiling down at his sweet boy’s face. “You are beautiful, Nam-min. I’m so happy to make dance class happen for you when I see you.”
He regretted not bringing flowers now; he just wasn’t sure if he...if he wanted them. Would accept them. 
Mu-yeol was about to shower his son in more praise, when coming up from behind Nemo was his worst nightmare. The nightmare who, last he saw her, threatened to take his fledgling and raise him without him, and who blamed him for So-yeon’s death as much as he did himself. 
Kang Kyung-ok, if the flesh, and in a dress fit for the London Ballet. 
“No. No…” he whispered as she approached. 
NEMO:
Appa’s smile dropped off his face. 
And okay-- Nemo really had meant to tell Appa before this. He kept trying to gather this courage. But every time he tried, anxiety surged through him and it was like every fight he ever had with Appa was on replay at the same time, a cacophony of arguments about how Nemo didn’t know better and he was just a fledgling and Appa was just trying to protect him-- punctuated at the end by the exact same expression that Appa wore now. 
If Nemo told Appa, he wouldn’t have come to the recital. But wasn’t the recital a good place for, if not a fresh start, just not a bad start? It was neutral ground, no place or time for fighting, not among the celebrations.
Guilt still flashed through him as he drew away from Appa’s arms. “Appa,” he started slowly. “It’s okay. I ah...reached out to them and they’ve been visiting for the past week. I know I should have told you but I knew you’d be upset--” Nemo’s eyes darted from the Songs to his abeoji again. “But there’s no reason to be, right?” He put on a smile. “We’re all here for the same reason! The past is in the past!” 
Soon-ja appeared by Halmoni’s side and she did a half bow toward Appa, then greeted him in Korean. “It’s good to see you, Mu-yeol-ssi,” she said, smiling politely. Then she looked back at Nemo and grinned. “Nam-minnie! You were even better than the videos!” 
Ah, thank the seasons for his aunt. Maybe between Nemo and Soon-ja they could keep this from turning into anything dramatic. 
 KYUNG-OK: 
 Kyung-ok had been worried that her youngest daughter, who has always liked her sister’s partner, would be too kind to him. But it seemed she wasn’t leaping at him shouting ‘oppa!’ which had to mean Soon-ja saw him for what he really was. 
A coward. A pitiful excuse for a fairy. A parasite that didn’t deserve their late daughter’s memory let alone deserved her in life. 
“Why ever would you be upset that Nam-min got to know his magic line?” Kyung-ok cooed, syrupy sweet, in Daegu-dialect Korean. 
“Yes, Bae-ssi,” Young-chul added, casually insulting Mu-yeol. Would Nam-min know that little quirks of Korean culture? “We only wanted to see our grandson dance.”
“Nam-minnie, flower—” Kyung-ok began, reaching for Nemo’s hand specifically to make Mu-yeol look crazy when he instinctively gripped his son’s shoulder. She had to bite back her devilish grin and force herself to frown. “See? I told you there was no way we can be a happy family.”
 MARLIN:
 Aiya, she was really doing this, wasn’t she?
“And whose fault was that really?” Mu-yeol said evenly, slipping into his satoori in kind. “Before my son was even born you took every opportunity to-”
No, not here. Not in front of Nemo and certainly not in front of all of his dance teachers. 
“There was a good reason she wanted to raise him in Seoul.” Away from you, he didn’t need to add. It was implied. 
And that was true. So-yeon did not want her parents to be just a quick bus ride across the city away. She wanted some distance between her and them, a buffer of kilometers between them and Nam-min and his small wing. No...not a total exclusion from his life, but enough space so that she had control over how much they saw him. 
If they can’t drop all this talk about his wing, then...then I don’t need them! She once shouted, trying her hardest to sound and look determined, and not terrified of the prospect of actually cutting out her parents entirely. 
But that’s exactly why So-yeon absolutely would have done it to protect her son if it came down to it. She always jumped headfirst into things that scared her. 
They’d already pushed her far enough away by insulting her choice in a partner. Her parents were always on thin ice with her.
“I’ll...walk to Sindri’s with you Nam-min. Let’s go.”
   NEMO
Appa gripped his shoulder. Halmoni reached for his hand. 
Nemo was literally caught in the middle between the Songs and the Baes and it hadn’t even been a proper flutter-length! 
He sucked in a breath as the Korean started to shoot rapid-fire, Appa speaking the way he spoke to his siblings on the phone--which was always hard for Nemo to grasp everything. If he said something truly rude then, Nemo didn’t know. Halmoni was acting like it was though. She frowned, and Nemo frowned-- and he wanted to grind his teeth and then stomp on all of their feet! 
Aiya, why say anything if they couldn’t say something nice? Just talk about him! He was right here! Compliment his dance or something!
His feet remained solidly stuck to the ground, even as Appa squeezed his shoulder tighter and urged him to leave. 
“No,” he said. He glanced from Appa to his grandparents and back. “We were going to go to dinner after my recital. This is the first one they’ve ever seen,” he spoke as firmly as his feet were planted. It was only fair his grandparents got to celebrate with him. They’d missed every recital before--every birthday, every Chuseok, everything. 
“You can come, Appa, but you all have to be nice to each other.” 
 KYUNG-OK:
She smiled at Mu-yeol, venom behind it as she held Nam-min’s hand. His eyes darted to Soon-ja like he was begging her to help him but Soon-ja was only looking at Nemo. 
How poetic that Mu-yeol’s only ally here was turning his back on him. 
Wise choice, child. She thought. He was a Song, not a Bae after all. 
“She’s incapable of that.” Mu-yeol muttered, letting go of Nam-min’s shoulder. “I respect my son too much to get into an argument here.”
He stepped back even as his eyes read pure terror. 
 NEMO
Appa stepped away.
Nemo tried not to be disappointed, but his heart dropped anyway. His hand in Halmoni’s loosened as he gazed after his abeoji, biting down on his lip. Actually, it was more than just disappointment--
Nemo’s chest got tight. That tiny guilty voice whispered, see? He does think you betrayed him.
“Appa,” he said softly again. He took a step away from Halmoni. He knew it was probably pointless-- it was always pointless with Appa, no matter how much Nemo tried to reason, no matter if he was kind and quiet or loud and aggressive. Whenever Appa made up his mind, he was rock-stubborn. Kinda like Nemo too--
 Still, it was a habit to try to reason with him and that habit kicked in now. “C’mon. I want you there too. I want all of you there, you’re all my family. Please, just...just try. For me.” 
 MARLIN:
“Nam-min…” Mu-yeol said, speaking English intentionally so only his son and Soon-ja could understand. He took another step back. “I’m respecting your boundaries, limits, and agency by letting you alone to stay with Sindri, and not playing tug of war with you right now. Respect mine. I will not— I can’t. You don’t understand what -”
He cleared his throat and glared at Kyung-ok. His son would learn soon enough what a monster she was. 
“I should have skipped this one, I knew I had a bad feeling for a reason.” He muttered under his breath, before nodding to Nemo. “Goodbye.”
He was even going to ask Nemo if he wanted to come to dinner tomorrow night...now? Who’s to say he wouldn’t bring the Songs?
He’d never felt so small before. 
 NEMO
I should have skipped this one, I knew I had a bad feeling for a reason.
More than anything, these words hurt-- a gut-punch that had Nemo’s breath caught in his throat. You mean...you weren’t going to come? Nemo thought, but couldn’t say out loud. He knew if he did, he’d instantly start crying.
Because it was his fault.
Of course Appa was thinking about not coming. Despite Nemo inviting him, he still hadn’t returned home. So much was still broken. Nemo thought the gap between him and Appa was healing, even if it healed slowly, but apparently the distance was too far. 
 He thinks you’ve abandoned him. Why would he come watch you dance?

How to Make Kimchi- Significance and Recipe

South Korea has always had a special place in my heart. I began taking taekwondo at 5 years old, and my instructor was one of the most important figures in my formative years.
Eventually, my love of Korean culture brought me to study abroad at Yonsei University in Fall 2018- an experience that would grant me so many amazing experiences (and the adoption of my special Korean stray cat, Virtute). One of the most memorable aspects of my life in Seoul was the incredible amount of kimchi (김치) I consumed with nearly every meal. For my research project, I am exploring the role of kimchi in Korean cuisine and how it has become such an important cultural and dietary artifact of Korean culture and identity. Kimchi-making is an experience that every person that enjoys eating it should take part in at least once in their lives.
Kimchi has existed on the Korean peninsula in some capacity for centuries. This document from the Samkuksaki, is considered to be the oldest surviving account of Korean history; this suggests that kimchi has been a part of Korean identity at least as long as Korean history has been recorded.

This translation of the document is provided by authors Dai-Ja Jang, Kyung Rhan Chung, Hye Jeong Yang, Kang-sung Kim, and Dae Young Kwon in their scholarly article “Discussion on the origin of kimchi, representative of Korean unique fermented vegetables”. According to Jang et al., the kimchi-making process was integral to Korean survival in the harsh winter season; known as kimjang (김장), kimchi-making involved many villagers getting together to make enough kimchi to last throughout the winter. Kimchi’s fermentation process allowed it to be stored by burying it in a jar in the cold ground.
Their analysis provides an extremely comprehensive case for the idea that kimchi has existed in Korea in a precursory capacity before its previously accepted origin period. 
The importance of kimchi does not end in the Three Kingdoms Period, however. Korean chef Si-hyeong Ryu knew that kimchi could be a great way to share Korean culture with the rest of the world. Chef Ryu discusses his thought process in a 2014 interview with Arirang TV. In 2011, Ryu began the Kimchi Bus Project. He decided on the name ‘Kimchi Bus’ because “You immediately think of Korea when you hear [kimchi]”. The word kimchi has become synonymous with Korea because of its historical importance, but also its status as an irreplaceable part of nearly every Korean meal. The Kimchi Bus Project allows Chef Ryu to drive across the globe sharing his passion for Korean cuisine; he goes on to describe how he “decided to mix cabbage kimchi with the traditional dishes of the country [he] was visiting”.
Since his first voyage, Chef Ryu has continued to spread the love of kimchi across the world for years now. Food is a cultural experience that transcends language barriers, and kimchi is no exception. Chef Ryu is not the only one to recognize kimchi’s importance as a cultural artifact, however.
In 2014, kimjang was inscribed by the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee For The Safeguarding Of The Intangible Cultural Heritage to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The document is both a meeting log for the Committee, as well as documentation of the approved inscriptions. 
This list is reserved for cultural practices and artifacts that exemplify humanity’s capacity for cooperation, passing knowledge down the generations, as well as encouraging dialogue between different communities. Kimchi-making is integral in facilitating communication and a sense of cultural identity among Koreans, and it also serves as an important cultural signifier of Korean heritage to other communities abroad. The Committee identifies kimjang as fitting these five criteria:
R.1:  Transmitted through generations in everyday family life, Kimjang allows Koreans to practise the spirit of sharing among neighbours, while promoting solidarity and providing them a sense of identity and belonging;
R.2:  Inscription of Kimjang could contribute to the visibility of intangible cultural heritage by enhancing dialogue among different communities nationally and internationally that practise foodways that similarly make creative use of natural resources;
R.3:  Although Kimjang is spontaneously transmitted within Korean families, measures are proposed to strengthen its safeguarding including formal education in school curricula and adoption of legislative provisions on measures for its promotion, as well as measures to mitigate industrialization of kimchi-making;
R.4:  Korean communities at three different levels – general public, local governments and academia – have participated through surveys in the elaboration of the nomination and have provided their free, prior and informed consent;
R.5:  After a multi-year process of consultation with communities concerned and civil society organizations, Kimjang was included in 2011 in the State Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage maintained by the Cultural Heritage Administration.

With this important historical and cultural context in mind, let’s learn how to make our own kimchi to enjoy with our friends and family!
Here is what you will need to make this simplified, small batch of kimchi:
INGREDIENTS
1 Head of napa cabbage
1 medium carrot (I’m using two smaller carrots)
1/2 cup kosher salt
1½ Tbsp glutinous rice flour (also known as mochiko flour)
1 Tbsp sugar
½ Medium yellow onion
5 Cloves peeled garlic
1-inch Knob of fresh ginger
½ Ripe pear or Korean pear
3 Tbsp fish sauce
½ Cup Korean red pepper flakes (Gochugaru; 고춧가루)
UTENSILS
Cutting board and knife
Fine grater
Plastic kitchen gloves (optional but highly recommended)
Sterilized 1-quart jar with canning lid or plastic lid
INSTRUCTIONS
1.  Prepare the cabbage
Rinse the napa cabbage thoroughly, making sure to get any dirt out from between the leaves and down toward the root. Cut the cabbage into quarters lengthwise. Make small diagonal cuts to remove the cores from each quarter as shown. Cut each quarter crosswise into 2-inch-wide strips.

2. Brine the cabbage
Place the cabbage pieces in a large bowl and sprinkle with the kosher salt. You can weigh down the cabbage with a plate or can if it isn’t fully immersed. Add enough water to cover the cabbage and let sit for 1 to 1/½ hours. While the cabbage is in the brine, peel and cut the carrot into thin matchsticks using a mandolin or knife and set aside.

3. Make the rice flour paste
Combine the glutinous rice flour with ½ cup of water in a small saucepan with the heat off. Mix the paste thoroughly before turning on the heat in order to get rid of lumps. Heat the mixture on medium heat until it thickens; it should take less than 5 minutes. When the paste is almost done, add in the tablespoon of sugar and whisk to combine.
The purpose of this mixture is to act as a sticking agent for the kimchi paste as well as round out the kimchi flavor with sweetness. It is important to do this step during the brining process as the paste needs time to cool completely before adding to the kimchi paste.

4. Make the kimchi paste
Using the finer side of a box grater, grate into a bowl half of a medium onion, 5 peeled garlic cloves, 1-inch knob of ginger, and half of a peeled ripe pear. A Korean pear is preferable, but a regular pear will work fine. Add the rice flour paste to the mixture along with a ½ cup of Korean red pepper flakes, also known as gochugaru. Finally, add three tablespoons of fish sauce as well as the julienned carrots and stir to combine.

5. Final assembly
At this point the cabbage should be properly brined. Drain and lightly rinse the cabbage, gently squeezing excess water out. If you’re going to be using gloves, now is the time to put them on! Using your hands, massage the paste into the cabbage making sure that every piece is covered well.

6. Pack the kimchi!
Once the cabbage is coated in the mixture, pack it into a sterilized 1-quart jar with a canning lid or plastic lid. The fermenting process requires that the kimchi is packed tightly to avoid pockets of air and that every piece is submerged in the liquid.

7. Final thoughts
This picture was taken before the kimchi was packed down all the way- notice the air pockets? This jar I used was a little too big for the amount of kimchi I made. However, a jar that is too big is preferable to a jar that is too small... I’ve heard many horror stories of peoples’ kimchi jars exploding because they did not leave proper room at the top for the fermentation gases, and/or tightened the lid too much for gases to escape.
When the kimchi is packed into the jar, you can leave it out at room temperature for a day or two with the lid loosely tightened. The fermentation process takes place faster at room temperature. Kimchi honestly tastes better the longer it is allowed to ferment. I ended up leaving this jar out on the counter for two days, then tightening the lid the rest of the way and putting it in the fridge. It is ready to eat immediately after the sauce is added, so you can enjoy it whenever is your preference.
Check on the kimchi daily, pressing it down with a spoon or your (gloved) hand to make sure it is covered in the kimchi juice. I cannot stress enough how much this stains! You may notice that the kimchi juice has bubbles- this is the fermentation process at work and is completely normal.

Cerpen | Gitu
Pono lesu. Baru saja dua hari yang lalu ia terkena PHK. Tapi, Pono merasa, kalau ia mengamuk sejadi-jadinya seperti Kholil atau Jarwo tidak akan merubah apa-apa. Meski kompensasi atau apapun itu judulnya yang jumlahnya tidak seberapa juga tidak menjamin apa-apa. Bila tidak segera mendapat pekerjaan lagi, uang itu dalam beberapa bulan pasti akan lenyap. Ia berfikir keras bagaimana lagi membiayai hidupnya dan keluarganya. Rasanya memang terlalu sepele, mungkin semua orang pernah mengalaminya. Tapi bagi orang-orang seperti Pono, pekerjaan itu adalah sebuah harga dirinya. Pergi saban pagi, dan pulang saban petang memang tidak membuatnya kaya raya, akan tetapi, hal tersebut yang membuatnya masih punya muka hingga kini. Tidak jadi bahan omongan tetangga, tidak jadi beban orangtua, dan segalanya kini direnggut darinya.
Pono hanya merenung di teras rumahnya, di bale bambu, rasa kopi yang disuguhkan ibunya pun tak terasa nikmat tanpa peluh kelelahannya selepas bekerja. Rasanya ia jadi beban. Otaknya penuh. Padahal orang tuanya tidak berkata aneh-aneh, hanya menyuruhnya bersabar dengan kondisinya saat ini. Meyakinkannya akan hari depan. Tapi hanya gelap yang ia pandang di matanya, di benaknya, di bayangannya yang ia pikirkan sendiri.
Kini ia tak lagi merasakan kenikmatan-kenikmatan itu. Memproses kedelai, merendamnya, atau menggilingnya, tidak lagi menghirup wangi kedelai yang direbus dalam tungku yang berbahan bakar serbuk gergaji sampai mendidih itu. Tidak lagi merasakan nikmatnya menyaring kedelai dengan menggunakan kain, untuk memisahkan ampas dan airnya. Ya itu semua lenyap. Lenyap dari kehidupannya.
Pabrik tempe besar itu memang kini sudah berskala internasional. Sudah beroperasi selama tiga generasi. Sudah tidak bisa lagi menampung orang-orang macam Pono. Orang-orang baru paling rendah harus memiliki gelar diploma. Cara-cara lama sudah tidak bisa digunakan. Di jaman disrupsi ini segalanya jadi berubah. Dalih apapun, efisiensi, perampingan, perbaikan, inovasi, supaya lebih baik, dan sebagainya dan sebagainya itu, harus di terima oleh Pono dan teman-teman pekerja lainnya, dan memang ia harus menerimanya. Tamatan Sekolah Menengah tak punya ruang lagi di jaman ini.
Apa yang harus dilakukannya kini? Ia tak mengerti. Benar-benar tak mengerti, tak kunjung juga mengerti. Semakin dipikirnya semakin tak mengerti. Baru dua hari ia tidak bekerja saja, sudah jadi bahan gunjingan tetangga. Ah, sebenarnya dulu pun, tetangga menggunjingnya hanya jadi buruh rendahan pabrik. Tapi setidaknya ketika itu dia menghasilkan uang. Semua serba salah. Ia hanya berbaring termenung di bale bambu teras rumahnya itu. Berbolak-balik ganti posisi, miring ke kiri, sesekali ke kanan. Rasanya tidak enak betul jadi pengangguran, meski baru dua hari.
Ia tidak siap sama sekali dengan kondisi ini. Tidak pernah memikirkannya sekalipun. Ia benar-benar menggantungkan diri dari pekerjaannya itu. Barangkali otaknya sudah berlumut terkontaminasi kedelai sampai tidak bisa digunakan sama sekali. Sepuluh tahun. Ya sepuluh tahun ia bekerja. Meski hanya dapat kenaikan upah dua puluh lima ribu setiap tahunnya, tapi selama ini ia bahagia. Ya, ia bahagia jadi buruh pabrik tempe. Selama itu ia tak pernah mengeluhkan apa-apa. Mengapa semua terasa terlalu cepat. Ia tidak siap. Benar-benar tidak siap dengan apa yang dialaminya saat ini.
Hari itu Kang Haji Yono, bapaknya, pulang ke rumah. Dan bapaknya hanya pulang seminggu sekali. Kang Haji Yono bekerja sebagai supir antar jemput sebuah sekolah swasta dan tinggal di mes. Melihat anaknya murung begitu rupa di depan teras rumah, sang bapak hanya duduk di sampingnya dan menepuk-nepuk kakinya. Pono menahan haru. Rasanya ia benar-benar jadi seperti anak yang tidak berguna. Sang bapak, setua itu, masih harus bekerja. Ketika ia masih bekerja dulu, mungkin tidak sesedih ini perasaannya. Ia bisa membantu barang sedikit biaya hidup keluarganya itu. Selama ini, ia menyerahkan gaji bulanannya pada sang ibu, Yu Jum. Pono sendiri, hanya menikmati uang makan harian yang dibagikan setiap minggu.
Selama itu Pono tidak pernah neko-neko. Jangankan memiliki seorang kekasih, membeli celana atau baju baru saja hanya dilakukannya saban malam lebaran. Itupun di tukang celana bekas. Tidak seperti kawan-kawannya yang ketika gajian tiba, mengajaknya ke pasar malam untuk beli ini-itu, pergi ke bilyard, karaoke, atau sekedar main futsal, jangan harap Pono melakukannya. Satu-satunya hiburan untuk mengusir rasa penat hanyalah berbincang dengan sang ibu, atau ayahnya, sesekali mengajak salah satu atau keduanya makan bakso Mang Adang di pasar Krukut, atau membelikan mereka durian kesukaannya. Rasanya begitu saja sudah membuat Pono bahagia. Namun semuanya kini musnah. Direnggut darinya.
Ia takkan lagi melihat senyum ibunya ketika menuangkan saos dan sambal banyak-banyak pada mangkok baksonya. Ia takkan lagi melihat tawa sang bapak ketika mengunyah martabak telur dengan empat telur bebek itu.
"Kan dunia ndak berhenti karena kamu di PHK toh le. Ndak perlu murung begitu." Kang Haji Yono menghibur. Tapi tetap saja kata-kata itu tak membuatnya terhibur sama sekali.
Keesokan harinya, Pono pagi-pagi sudah keluar rumah. Ia memakai kemeja dan celana bahan. Rambutnya disisir rapih memakai minyak banyak-banyak. Sepatu hitamnya berkilat-kilat disemirnya pula. Para tetangga terheran-heran. Ibu-ibu yang biasa berkumpul di tukang sayur juga terpukau dibuatnya. Kemana gerangan Pono pergi dengan dandanan rapih seperti pekerja kantoran? Yu Lastri sempat bertanya pada Yu Jum kemana anaknya akan pergi? Apa Pono sudah punya pekerjaan baru? Tapi sang ibu juga tak tahu-menahu perihal anaknya itu.
Sementara para tetangga bertanya-tanya, Pono terus berjalan keluar dari kampung sengon yang kumuh itu. Langkahnya yang tadi tegas dan berwibawa lambat laun berganti. Ia berjalan dengan gontai. Ia sebenarnya tidak tau mau ke mana. Pono hanya ingin menghindari cemoohan para tetangga bila ia di rumah saja, Jadi ia keluar rumah. Berjalan dan berjalan terus ke belakang Pasar Krukut.
Tadi malam itu sebenarnya, aku ditelepon olehnya. Rasanya sedih sekali mendengar kesulitannya, maka dari itu aku mengajaknya keluar pagi-pagi, setidaknya aku ingin menghiburnya. Aku menunggu di pinggir danau dekat kantor Lurah Krukut. Sepanjang hari itu aku mendengarkannnya berkeluh kesah, sambil melihat orang-orang memancing dengan tenangnya. Pono heran mengapa orang-orang itu begitu senang memancing. Banyak dari wajah mereka sering dilihatnya saban hari membuang waktu tidak jelas demi hasil yang tidak jelas juga. Apa mereka juga pengangguran seperti dirinya? Apa kata keluarga mereka? Tidakkah mereka jenuh? Apakah saban hari mereka makan ikan saja? Ikan-ikan kecil yang tidak seberapa enak dimakan itu? Apa ia akan jadi semacam mereka juga?
Pono menghela nafas, memikirkan nasibnya, bagaimana esok? Bagaimana lusa? Ia tak lagi memiliki pekerjaan. Ia tak lagi bisa pergi dan pulang dengan riang seperti dulu. Ia merasa benar-benar pecundang. Orang yang kalah. Orang yang kalah dalam hidup.
"Aku tidak mengerti Mar, mengapa, kebahagiaanku yang sederhana itu direnggut begitu saja, tanpa bilang-bilang, tanpa aba-aba. Mengapa harus orang kecil seperti aku yang menderita, yang hidup sangat amat sederhana, yang sembahyang lima waktu saban hari, bahkan menghindari diri dari banyak dosa, selalu berbuat baik di mana saja, malah dipersulit." Keluhnya.
"Kamu tidak boleh menyalahkan Tuhan." Balasku.
"Aku hanya tidak mengerti Mar, mengapa banyak orang gedean, orang yang pakaiannya rapih, memakai jas dan berdasi di kota, orang-orang yang mengaku berpendidikan itu, yang bahkan tidak perduli dengan kebutuhan orang lain, tidak mengenal kejujuran dan ketulusan, yang kerjaannya berbuat dosa, yang hanya perduli dengan urusan dirinya sendiri, malah dimudahkan hidupnya, dibiarkan menikmati segala kemewahan dan kemerdekaan dalam hidup.”
"HUSH!" Bentakku.
Aku berdiri. Angin sore yang dingin berhembus, menyibak kerudung lebarku, membuatnya berkibar-kibar. Jemariku menggapai tangan kurusnya, mengajaknya berdiri.
"Ayo ikut aku."
“Kemana?"
Tanpa banyak berbincang lagi, kami meninggalkan danau. Aku membawanya ke pemukiman kumuh, di daerah bantaran kali Krukut. Berjalan dengan tergesa, menelusuri gang-gang kecil di antara barisan rumah semi permanen yang berjejalan seperti saling sikut itu. Kami berhenti di salah satu rumah. Aku mengucap salam seraya mengetuk pintu depannya, dan tak perlu waktu lama sampai salam dijawab dari dalam rumah dan seorang pemuda membukanya, tampak ia terkejut melihat wajahku.
"Bu Mariam, Masuk Bu!"
Rumah itu teramat kecil, hanya ada pemuda itu dan seorang perempuan paruh baya di dalamnya. Bau pesing menyeruak seketika ketika aku dan Pono masuk ke dalam. Mata Pono mengamati kondisi isi rumah dengan sungguh-sungguh. Si pemuda dengan sigap membereskan beberapa pakaian yang baru di lipat yang tadinya tergeletak di tikar lusuh ke lemari kecil, dan mempersilahkan kami duduk kemudian.
"Maaf ya Bu, kondisi rumahnya berantakan."
"Tidak apa-apa Man, Apa kamu tadi telat ke sekolah?"
“Ya, seperti biasa Bu, Ibu tidak mengajar di sekolah tadi?"
"Ya, ibu ada urusan sedikit, bagaimana kondisi ibumu?"
“Yah, begitulah Bu, masih seperti biasa."
Si pemuda bangkit mengambilkan air untuk kami, sementara, aku dan Pono mengamati perempuan paruh baya yang duduk di lantai, yang tidak lama kemudian menjerit-jerit.
“Bapak!!! Bapak!!! Bapak!!"
Si pemuda tersipu, dengan cekatan ia minta diri untuk mengurusi perempuan paruh baya itu, membawanya ke kamar mandi, mengambil daster dan celana dalam ganti. Aku biarkan Pono melihat sendiri. Segala hal yang aku sebelumnya telah melihatnya. Kami tak lama di rumah itu. Hanya tiga puluh menit, melihat si pemuda mengepel bekas kencing si perempuan paruh baya, lalu menyuapinya makan nasi bungkus. Lepas memberi amplop berisi uang yang tidak seberapa pada si pemuda, yang sebenarnya ditolaknya tapi aku paksa untuk menerima, kemudian kami minta diri.
"Kasihan anak itu, Bapaknya pergi entah kemana, kabarnya menikah lagi, ibunya jadi agak kurang ingatan. Anak itu sering terlambat ke sekolah karena kesiangan bangun sebab malamnya harus jadi tukang parkir dan bantu-bantu di warung pecel lele. Aku sering berkunjung untuk membantunya sedikit yang kubisa.”
Terlihat Pono menitikkan air mata.

The Hong Sisters love to include some social commentary in their dramas but since all their previous shows were mainly rom-coms they didn’t have a real opportunity to delve deeper but Hwayugi, with its story about the struggle between good and evil allows them to go all out and, boy, they do. One of the two main themes of the last two episodes was that there is a huge difference between what people call history and what is the truth because while history is entirely subjective entity which is usually written by winners who are so often men (and since Korea is such a masculine-based culture the story of the female warrior is even more relevent), the truth, on the other hand, is an absolute notion and even though people try to distort it, deny it or forget it there is always someone who knows. As mentioned before, the history is written by the winners and by those who have the power to write or rather distort it to their image. It’s really fitting and well-thought-out that the old female’s grandson and one of the main antagonists of the story is actualy A HISTORY PROFESSOR at Korea University (with Sungkyunkwan SK’s most influential and famous university and one of TOP100 universities in the world), so he is in fact literally creating and distorting history, his position and status giving him the credibility. He and his family have it all - power, status, money,... -  they are virtually untouchable and there is only one thing that can destroy them - THE TRUTH.
The story asks the question what is the truth behind all the lies and pretence? The real heroes live in the shadows, people don’t find their statues on town’s squares or their names in museums - REAL HEROES ARE FORGOTTEN.
“There are people hiding ugly secrets right in front of you.”
The second theme is that all gold does not glitter, that beauty is only skin deep and that things are not what they seem. There are so many examples of this - there is Kang Dae Sung who is handsome and admired but he is cold-blooded and most likely capable of anything to achieve his ambitions, including BJ’s death cover-up, on the other hand, there is Ma Wang, an actual demon, who is capable of compassion for humans and even zombies and who is able to restrain his very nature of a born predator because of his morals and the woman he loves. This dichotomy is apparent also on Alice, a beautiful woman but who only thinks about herself and considers everyone else beneath her and beneath her facade she is rotten to the bone and there is Bu Ja who is not even human and is actually rotting away but, like Ma Wang, she possesses the humanity both Alice and Dae Sung lack. It’s symbolic and relevant that in a world full of demons, it’s actually the humans who are the real devils.

Korean Odyssey Episode 19
BE PREPARED FOR SPOILERS!!! [If you haven’t watched episode 19 nows your chance to scroll away from my post! 
First of all... The entire episode felt completely rushed :/ we watched 18 episodes to fall in love with the characters and each episode would easily grasp your attention... and then episode 19 was just anti-climatic. 
Basically within one episode you had Pal Gye try and kill Ah Sa Nyeo which resulted in her now acting like an evil spirit because people keep on saying it. Then she tries and kills Pal Gye... like serious where is Bu Ja, surely she’d try and prevent her from killing Pal Gye! I feel like the idea of Bu Ja ever coming back has gone which completely sucks. Then because Pal Gye is dying Jade Dragon saves him by sacrificing himself which is sad enough! Pal Gye’s acting was so emotional though and it did make me tear up.

Then we had the whole summoning the dragon thing. This is where a sword was used with blood of the priestess on to summer the dragon. General Winters stopped Ah Sa Nyeo from summoning it. The Sam Jang went to lecture Kang Dae-sung and they had a very pathetic fight over the sword which resulted in Sam Jang being stabbed... like another death? Two deaths in one episode and its Sam Jang’s death? She died so easily and so quickly which was disappointing. And then Son Oh Gong took her somewhere safe and that death scene killlllledddddd me... I cried so much [Lee Seung Gi is truly amazing and the chemistry they share is beautiful...] But Sam Jang’s blood awoke the dragon and Son Oh Gong of course had to fight it which was so cliche. I feel like the ending was too predicable.

Finally can we all just talk about the dragon.... it looked so bad that it was actually the only thing to stop my tears. The effects on it were so bad that they were almost laughable. 
As you can tell this episode was not for me and I think they could of done a lot better... at least not rushing the whole episode. Even the fight with the dragon was like 2 minutes long. But what I am interested in is what will happen in episode 20. Maybe something good will happen. Maybe Jin Seon Mi will come back to life or Bu Ja will finally be free. I dunno! Fingers crossed though~
Please tell me what you all though! I need some people to rant to about this episode as you can tell!!

Jade Dragon 🐙 thinks that PK 🐷 should be told that Bu Ja 🧟‍♀️ was killed by Kang Dae Seung. Ma Wang vetoes that thought, PK would rip the human Professor to shreds if he knew what he did to Bu Ja / Se Ra.

@dramajib I don't see how they're going to wrap all this up without it feeling anticlimactic honestly. Like the last we hear is that Oh Gong, by defeating the Geumganggo on his own, has created an opportunity to change fate. Which fits in with the Son Oh Gong of legends who is constantly defying the gods and the restrictions they try to impose on him

dramajib: But given how Sam Jang's duty/task has been this huge overarching driving force, I just don't see how they'll build it up enough in two episodes and knock it down without it just being another "haha jk easy fix" thing

A Potentially Boring Ending? 
rocknghorss: I was worried but then I realized that this show has never killed or seriously injured any of the main characters
rocknghorss: Kinda like what Ekta was saying earlier, the ending is probably going to be wildly boring unless they don’t let Oh Gong circumvent fate after all and Sam Jang kills him

triangularlily: Maybe there will be some kind of twist like I haven't found the show really that predictable maybe because it's so wacky

triangularlily: Also I know I kept harping on about wanting the guegensjskaong bracelet thing off but like it's too late at this point I think their romance won't ever do it for me
triangularlily: Like I am glad his feelings are real but it's just too late at this point
rocknghorss: His feelings are real but what are they based on is my issue!?  Because the version 1.0 model forced obedience upon whoever wore it

triangularlily: Actually a really interesting idea that probably won't be explored in the show
triangularlily: Like for me they must never developed the romance/their feelings  like they put the bracelet on and tada! he loves her! Like how am I supposed to be invested or believe in that
triangularlily: In the beginning of the show I thought maybe they would take the bracelet off and then they would kind of start over in their relationship and fall in love for real like sometimes what kdramas do with amnesia plots but like that's not what happened
rocknghorss: Their romance I think is really tough to believe cause of what you said earlier and also because they don’t really know each other.  Who is Jin Seon Mi really?  All I know about her is that she really likes the fact that there’s finally someone who likes her despite (or because of?) her magical powers.  And that’s a sad basis for a relationship.
dramajib: I think that’s a good point - I don’t have trouble believing their feelings for each other, but I just don’t care.  And that’s mostly because Seon Mi as a character hasn’t been fleshed out.  This sudden “I’m going to empty my heart of love and save the world” thing just makes no sense to me, it just seems like a way to keep the story moving

triangularlily: I think they def are just trying to keep the story moving.  I was glad tho that she seems to be the only one who cares about Bu Ja rather than PK rn
triangularlily: Also I rather wish she had powers since the beginning I kind of like that addition to her character even if it’s just more of a plot device
dramajib: Back to Ma Wang for a quick sec - I wondered if him being so gullible and easy to trick had anything to do with him being the (a?) devil.  Combined with how he’s so softhearted just seems like an interesting personality choice for this character.  Like we do see him being cold and harsh, but it never last very long and he’s obviously the biggest softy and everyone knows it.
rocknghorss: Ma Wang, kinda like Oh Gong, is ultimately harmless.  They’ve even dialed back Ah Sa Nyeo’s diabolical plans and made her seem almost sympathetic.  i really hope that whatever plan Oh Gong has up his sleeve also is meant to save BuJa too— it’s irritating that it’s only been PK and Octopus(?) that have seemed to care for the last ~8 episodes.
rocknghorss: Oh yeah, and Seon Mi too, when the writers let her care about something other than Oh Gong
triangularlily: I’m just really worried they’re gonna give the shaman some kind of redemption arc and she like agrees to be burned or something and BuJa just is like gone
rocknghorss: Let’s hope not!!!
rocknghorss: Also, going back to what you said last week Kristin… this show has so many side plots!  It’s pretty amazing that they’re all fairly (?) relevant to the overall plot.  Even Jason (that was his name right?) had a part to play in showing that Seon Mi could have a fairly normal human life if she found the right person.
triangularlily: Yeah, I think maybe that’s why it’s not living up to my expectations of a Hong sister’s drama.  I think it’s too complicated and maybe because it’s an adaption of something.  Maybe they’re just a lot better at writing their own stories.
rocknghorss: that’s an interesting idea.  I never thought of it like that.  They also did an adaptation of Chunhyang back in the day right?
triangularlily: Oh idk. I haven’t seen it!
rocknghorss: Well all I really recall about it is that it was boring lol.  
triangularlily: Well maybe I’m right then lol
rocknghorss: Ekta will you tell me what you meant earlier about Ma Wang being a/the devil and being gullible?  
dramajib: I just noticed that of all the characters, he seems to be the one who gets painted as this dumb foolish guy a lot, someone you can easily put one over
dramajib: Like even with PK, it’s only the BuJa angle that allows him to be manipulated.  But with Ma Wang it’s love, and then pride, and envy and family, and whole gamut of things that let people lead him on and allow him to be very susceptible to suggestion
dramajib: I mean, yes, he does eventually catch on and shake it off and get back to bad business, but mostly there’s this quality of gullibility attached to him that we don’t really see in the other characters as much - and it made me think about how in all the folk stories we always hear about the devil being tricked or outsmarted so that good triumphs over evil in the end.
dramajib: I know the other characters do get tricked and manipulated too, the main premise of the show is supposed to be about Seon Mi and Oh Gong’s feelings being manipulated, but it doesn’t have that same quality of “look how stupid this creature is lol” to it as it does with Ma Wang… Or maybe that’s just be being partial to Cha Seung Won again
rocknghorss: No lol.  I don’t think it’s the CSW bias.  I guess my only point of contention (if it can even be called that) is that as the devil, Ma Wang may be doing such a poor job at tempting people and is so easily tricked himself is because he’s a devil who was trying to become a deity.

dramajib: Re BuJa (because I was asleep when you guys discussed it, because time zones ugh): I wonder if her mom actually died, or was just transferred somewhere else.  The translations for that bit seemed a bit off.
dramajib: If they are giving Ah Sa Nyeo a redemption arc, maybe she’ll sacrifice her soul to make BuJa human again or something like that.  it still seems a bit unsatisfactory though. I will be sad to not get BuJa back, but can’t think of a way for them to do it that wouldn’t frustrate me.  Unless she comes back, stays a zombie, but becomes a pop star and the energy she gets from her concerts keep her going?
dramajib: I want her to do it on her own, you know?  Not just because someone helped her.  As sweet as PK is with her.  But he mentioned something about hoping Ah Sa Nyeo becomes good so he can make her his little sister too, so who knows how things are going to go.
rocknghorss: Bu Ja did want to become a popstar didn’t she? I’d forgotten about that.  But in terms of Ah Sa Nyeo and redemption, my prediction is that she’ll get one and it’ll paint her in a super sympathetic light and Prof. Kang will go down (but not die!) and somehow BuJa will be reincarnated.
