Sailing Sim RPG ‘Sagres’ Gets Surprise Release on Switch; Available Now
From Noisy Pixel
youtube
Kakehashi Games has announced that the ooze-developed sailing simulation RPG Sagres is now available on Nintendo Switch via the eShop. The game was initially released last year on PC via Steam and has received Very Positive reviews from players.
Sagres invites players to embark on a global adventure, navigating from the icy peaks of North America to the vast Saharan plains of Africa and every exotic locale in between. This expansive game allows you to discover hundreds of real-world locations, establish crucial trade routes, and delve into local markets to unearth novel goods for trade, enriching your journey with every port you visit.
As you traverse the open seas, arm yourself with an array of weapons, including swords, guns, and cannons, and don protective armor to safeguard against various threats like pirates, wild animals, and mythical creatures. Sagres features a unique “rock-paper-scissors” turn-based combat system that challenges you to master the art of naval warfare strategically. Load your ship with heavy artillery to enhance your battle prowess, but balance this firepower with enough cargo space to store essential resources for your survival. Success in Sagres hinges on combat and effective resource management, determining whether your voyage makes history or meets a watery grave. Moreover, by accepting contracts from various guilds, you can pursue the path of the world explorer, uncover treasures unseen by others, and perhaps even gain the attention of royalty as you ascend through the ranks of exploration and adventure.

Devlog #11: Localization and Organizing Notes
Tumblr media
Hello everyone! Welcome to this month’s devlog!
If you just stumbled upon this, I am Adrienne, also known as insertdisc5! I’m the developer, writer, artist, main programmer, etc of the game. The game being In Stars and Time, a timeloop RPG, which is the next and final game in the START AGAIN series, following START AGAIN: a prologue (available here!).  You can find out more about In Stars and Time here!!!
LET’S GET TO IT. This month's devlog is about localizations and how I organize my notes!
The month of January has, once again, been all about bug fixing. My producer once told me QA and bug fixing would take forever and I didn’t believe her, but it is true. You kill one bug and three take its place.
Bugs aside, the first pass of the localization of the game into Japanese has been completed (thanks Kakehashi Games!) ! Wait did we even mention officially that the game will be in English and Japanese at release. Well there you go! In Stars and Time will be released in both English and Japanese!!!
Tumblr media
Now that the first pass is over, it’s time for the very time intensive work of adding all that translated text into the game, as well as translating any illustrations. And after that, the localization team will take over QA, and will play the game from beginning to end in Japanese, making sure everything works well in context!
Tumblr media
I can’t wait for Japanese speakers to try out the game as well!!!
Oh! Also, speaking of words, I wrote a post on how I approach worldbuilding, more specifically expressions and swear words and about how Jesus Christ is not canonical to the ISAT universe. Mayhaps it could tickle your fancy?
Uuuuuh this devlog is so short. I feel bad. Well uh (thinks very hard) how about you come with me on a journey, and look at how I organize my notes? Yeah? YEAH!!! (This section will feature: blocked out text) (Also: I realized after writing all this that I did talk about my writing process a bit in my #2 devlog. Well uh you get writing process: 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Tumblr media
I use OneNote for all my ISAT notes! I use it because quite frankly this was the first software I tried and it works. I like how it has tabs within tabs within tabs, so I can easily (ISH?) find any notes I’m looking for!
Tumblr media
If you look at the colored tabs, the first one is “demo”, which is everything related to START AGAIN: a prologue (aka: has not been looked at for a year). It contains all the text in the game, as well as general gameplay notes and musings like “hey wouldnt it be fun if I used rock/paper/scissors.” You might notice the text here isn’t in the correct order. That’s a feature not a bug, thats just how my brain works OK!!!!!
Tumblr media
The second tab is “Game”, which is the big In Stars And Time tab. It’s divided into a lot of sections, including:
General Dev Notes, which contains general reminders (“ADD MORE PUNS”).
Random Dialogue Corner, which, as the name implies, contains a lot of random dialogues between the characters. They’re also divided into different sections, depending on what kind of dialogue it is- is it a funny scene, or a more serious one? Is it between characters, or just Siffrin going on a big monologue? Etc. This dialogue may or may not be in the game, its main reason for existing is “hee hee I like when my little guys talk in my head”.
Gameplay and Stuff, which is all about the rpg part of the game. What are the skills? How does each enemy behave? What quests are available? How does the game over screen work? Etc
And finally, a big section filled with The Story, which is divided into acts. From the very start, I knew ISAT would have very delimited story beats, which made it easy to just go “ok, this scene goes into Act 3”, etc. For the text, I make sure to keep all the different drafts I had of a specific scene, partly because I sometimes lose a nugget of Fun Stuff by rewriting a scene, and partly because it’s fun to see how a scene has evolved. I tend to write important story scenes 3 times, each time without looking at earlier drafts to see what comes out, and then frankenstein the scene from what I have.
In general I try to keep as many of my notes as possible, because I deleted a lot of my notes for START AGAIN: a prologue and it makes me sad I can’t look at my thought process on a lot of things anymore. KEEP YOUR NOTES KIDS
Tumblr media
Going back to the big tabs, next we have “World”, which is everything related to worldbuilding, relationships between characters, the general timeline, more detailed notes on the culture, etc. I used this tab a lot less as time went on, but at the start it was very useful to be able to refer to it, especially for all the city names and their spelling…
Tumblr media
After that, we have the “Devlog” tab, which is my own private devlog! I find it very useful to keep a private devlog for myself, because it helps me see clearly that YES, the game is coming along. Every week, I try to write down where I’m at, any problems that I have, as well as screenshots of what the game looks like.
I also give myself space to write how I feel about the game! How is it going? Is it fun to work on this? What do I think about the story, about this character, about this development? I think it’s important to write those things down in the moment- I always keep in mind this post by Wreden, the creator of the Stanley Parable- in it, he talks about the reaction to the Stanley Parable, and how getting so many Thoughts thrown his way about what his game means meant that he lost sight of what his game meant to him. In Stars and Time means a lot to me, and I want to make sure future me remembers why!
Tumblr media
Next is “meta”, which is mostly coding references. The way rpgmaker (and, I guess, most video game software???) works is by using variables to keep track of quests and whatnot, and so I used this tab to write down “if this variable equals 5, it means we’re at that point in this quest”! I also used it for code I always use but can’t be bothered to remember, like the conditional code that checks if a switch is ON or not. Aka the simplest most basic code. LISTEN I DON’T WANNA REMEMBER CODE OK
Tumblr media
After that is the “To Do” tab, which is pretty self explanatory. I try to divide it into chunks like “To do (localization)”, so I don’t have a massive to-do list, but instead lots of small ones, teehee. This is also where I keep my changelog, to write down any changes I make between builds.
Tumblr media
And last, but definitely not least, is my “Messy File” tab! This is where I put ALL MY NOTES. It needs different parts because I made a new part every time opening a tab made my computer chug like crazy. Because it has so many words.
I get an idea for a scene in the middle of the night? GOES INTO THE MESSY SCENE. Oh, I realized when I was grocery shopping that I should fix this small bug by doing this! MESSY FILE. Hehe what if I drew Siffrin baldMESSY FILE. Everything goes there, and then every couple weeks I go through it and put all those little nuggets of ideas into their actual tab. I find it useful to have a file that is allowed to be messy as hell, so the other tabs can be clean and neat!
The Messy File tab also contains the “Entire Story”, which is something I wrote in August 2021 when I started thinking I had no idea where I was going. I took like 4 hours to write down the entire story, from beginning to end, and if I had no idea what would happen, I would just make it up on the spot even if I thought it was bad. And guess what. After that, I knew where I was going. CRAZY!!! I did that a couple more times when I felt stuck at a specific point in the story, and it helped me every time. Would recommend.
And, that’s it! That’s how I organize my notes! I hope! This was! Insightful! Somehow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That’s all I have to say for today! Let me know if you have any questions, or if there’s any aspect of the game development struggle you’d like me to talk about! See you next time!!!
AND DON’T FORGET TO WISHLIST THE GAME ON STEAM ALSO IT REALLY HELPS BECAUSE STEAM’S ALGORITHM IS MORE LIKELY TO SHOW OFF GAMES WITH A HIGH AMOUNT OF WISHLISTS THAT’S THE REASON WHY GAME DEVS ALWAYS ASK TO WISHLIST!!! OKAY BYE!!!!

Hey Jay. How are you doing? Would you tell us your top 10 favorite books?
Ahh, thank you, Ari, for the ask!
This was a hard one! I know technically they should be ranked, but I really just picked 10 of the most impactful books I’ve read in my lifetime. For me, impactful means I still think about it whether I read it yesterday or years ago. Here goes nothing!
Copping Free (titled Serpent Girl when I read it), Matthew Carnahan
The Hate U Give, Angie Thomas
The DUFF, Kody Keplinger
Just Like That, Marsha Qualey
The Uglies series, Scott Westerfeld
Call of the Wild + White Fang, Jack London (yes, I cheated)
Prep, Curtis Sittenfeld
Flyboys, James Bradley
Letters from Iwo Jima, Kumiko Kakehashi
Harry Potter series (my favorite book is The Prisoner of Azkaban), She Who Shall Not be Named
Honorable mentions (I said it was hard, ok?!)
Hannibal Lecter series, Thomas Harris
Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson
The Most Dangerous Game, Richard Connell (technically a short story)
That was so much fun. Thank you 🖤

Kakehashi 2022 - Introduction
Table of Contents | Next ->
Long time, no post! (Brace yourselves for a meaty post!)
Tumblr media
I had intended to post here much sooner, but unfortunately the Kakehashi program's trip to Japan got delayed for a little over a year. At first it was slated to take place around the same time as the pre-exchange I posted about before, but due to Japan's COVID lockdowns the date got pushed back further and further. Luckily, since they finally removed the quarantine requirements and reinstated visa-free travel back in October, we were at last able to go on the trip this December!
Over the next few days (maybe weeks?), I'll be posting a series of travelogue-style blog entries about the trip itself (mostly in chronological order), and there will be plenty of pictures of my favorite parts. It was by far the best trip I've had the opportunity to go on before, so I hope some of you will also find this interesting!
Before getting to the meat of the trip in the following posts, I'm going to give some background about us participants. We consisted of two groups of nine university students handpicked from the University of Memphis and from Ohio University, along with one "chaperone" for each group. My group was the one from the University of Memphis, which I'll henceforth call "UofM". No, not the one in Michigan. most of us were picked because of our roles in founding a student organization based out of the Japanese language department at the UofM during the initial COVID lockdowns here in the States. We've been thriving as a group ever since then, being easily the largest organization that this department has had to date. (Not to toot my own horn or anything lol. Plugging our Instagram.)
Some of us had already graduated, yet weren't able to study abroad due to Japan's lockdowns over the last two years, so for them, this trip was almost too good to be true. It was a chance to finally get a taste of what was denied to them before. Our group's chaperone also fell into this category, being a graduate student who some of us had shared classes with during undergrad, as well as being one of us founders of the student org.
All of us from the UofM group were a part of the Japanese department and had studied Japanese for a significant time ahead of this trip; though some had studied for longer than the others, since a few in our group were taking other Majors or had taken a break after graduating. As for me personally, I've been studying Japanese for the last 4-5 years, with the first two-ish years being intense self-study on my own. These days, I mostly study by reading Japanese through video games and manga, supplemented with some more realistic media here and there. (Not to mention the university courses!) I was definitely looking forward to a real-world test of my skills, since I had been avoiding going out of the way to practice my speaking lately, and had been feeling a bit out of touch with where my level was.
The trip was organized and coordinated by the "Japan International Cooperation Center" (or JICE for short) as a part of the Ministry of Foreign Affair's "Japan's Friendship Ties Program", specifically under the label of the "Kakehashi Project" for the North American version of the program. All travel expenses, airfare, lodging, and so forth were completely covered for the participants, which was truly amazing. I had never been to Japan before this trip, in large part due to the cost of the flights to and from Japan!
(As a sidenote, do go easy on me, I'm still fairly new to posting publicly on social media, let alone here on tumblr. I'm a chronic lurker at heart.)

Sea of Stars Confirms Nintendo Switch Release + Trailer
Indie game developer, Sabotage, has announced that Sea of Stars, its upcoming turn-based RPG, will be coming to the Switch next holiday season. Sabotage does warn, however, that this release window may change should the game need more time in development. They want to properly finish and polish up the game before its launch. A new trailer was also unveiled at the recent Nintendo Indie World…

It was a great and fucked up episode, I absolutely adore this death-game to see who becomes God, it kind of reminded me of Mirai Nikki (one of my top anime ever). I have high expectations for this one hope it gets only better.

Drama CD: [華ヤカ哉、我が一族] ソフマップ特典「ナリキリ縁談」
Tumblr media
Hiroshi: ‘Mmm Tada-nii your collar is not straight let me adjust that for you <3.’ Susumu: ‘Oooooh nii-san your pecs feel harrrd have you been working out? ;)’ Shigeru: ‘DAT ASS *squeeeeze*.’
*
I guess Hanayaka Nari needs no introduction. (Basically: 6 half-brothers, 1 very rich and very bored father, and you = their maid.) This drama features the following trio:
#2: Miyanomori Isami (31), Army Colonel [cv. Tasaka Hideki]
#4: Miyanomori Susumu (22), Police Officer [cv. Kakehashi Atsushi]
#5: Miyanomori Hiroshi (18), Aspiring Inventor [cv. Kishio Daisuke]
So Mr. Miyanomori has arranged blind dates tomorrow with potential marriage partners for two of his sons - Isami and Hiroshi. But! IT’S A TRAP. They show their brother Susumu (the ‘mediator’ of the bunch) the respective photos, and these women are older than their mothers, and not in an MILF kind of way. They ask Susumu to go on their behalf pretending to be them and reject the marriage proposals.
In preparation, Susumu tries to imitate the way they talk to make his act more believable. (The uploaded audio track.) He gives a super cheerful but ruthless rejection as Hiroshi: ‘I am not interested in you at all (/*^-^)/ ~♪’, and Hiroshi is all like ummmm can you be more... tactful? Then he turns around and gives some sob story in character as Isami (the old “you are a great girl but I’m on a mission” shtick), and Isami is like: #smh this is something I will never say ಠ_ಠ.
XDDD LOLOL. In the end Susumu’s demos were completely unsatisfactory, and it’s back to the drawing board...
THE NEXT DAY. Back from the blind dates, Hiroshi asks him how it went, and Susumu replies that at least he managed to pass as them successfully and laughs enigmatically... Then Isami runs into the room raging because *guess what*? Susumu told Hiroshi’s date that he is dying of leukemia so he can’t marry. And to Isami’s partner he said that he already has 3 wives and 5 kids... which Hiroshi actually thought was pretty impressive XD.
#lmaooo. This disc really highlights how Susumu seems so 'straitlaced’ on the outside, but deep down he is totally dark and twisted. I swear this boy is my soul twin!!!! >:D

★ If you add the question-making particle か (ka) to the end of the sentence, you can ask “Is that so?” or “Really?”
★ An appropriate response to this question would be はい、そうです。(hai, sou desu).
★ In casual Japanese, you can use そうか。(sou ka)instead.

Ozmafia!! Character Profiles
The quarantine boredom finally got to me
Aaa, no, but really, back in one of my previous posts I mentioned that there were character profiles in this Ozmafia!! Vivace booklet. I didn’t have the time or energy to attempt to translate the full profiles back then, but due to recent circumstances (´;ω;) I decided to finally give it a shot.
The character profiles can be found under the “Read More”!!
*Note:  Most of what I had to translate was easy enough considering I was working with just words and not full on sentences. There were some parts that tripped me up (of which I included the original Japanese characters along w/ a tentative definition in this post; if anyone can help me with these parts, please DM me). Otherwise, I did the best I could with what I previously know about the language, a Japanese dictionary, and Google Translate. If anyone wants to see the original character profiles to check for any errors in translation, don’t hesitate to reach out to me through this account!*
*Note: Things in parentheses are actually a part of the original profile information. Things in the brackets are my own commentary/info.*
