Iraqi Jewish confectionery are a window into a bygone era
Tumblr media
Five days a week, 78-year-old Tzvi (Sabah) David rises at 4:35 a.m. and dons an all-white baker’s outfit before heading out to open up Konditorei David, the last-of-its-kind Iraqi pastry shop in Petah Tikva that was opened by his father David Tsalah.
Three days before the Purim holiday, David is getting ready for one of the busiest times of the year as multiple generations of Iraqi customers will soon stop by to purchase sweets that have been synonymous with Purim for Iraqi Jews for centuries, if not millennia.
“I love the work. It is a very tiring and difficult job and I am not 18 anymore, but I feel young in the morning when I get up,” David tells Eliyahu Freedman of The Times of Israel on a recent visit to the small shop, which doubles as a window into the pre-modern world of Middle-Eastern pastries.
His first item of business today is making a fresh batch of baba qadrasi, also known in Arabic as “mann el-sama” or “manna from heaven,” named after the legendary food that God miraculously delivered from the sky to feed the Israelites in the Exodus story.
If not truly the biblical food itself, an early recipe for baba qadrasi was found in a 10th-century Abbasid cookbook.

Love this guy! Great recipe 🥙 and -
Because I see Hebrew lessons everywhere I go -
Hummus, or in Israeli Hebrew pronunciation /'khoo-moos/, is what we call both the spread and chickpeas.
When it comes to chickpeas, we usually add the word /gar-gee-'rey/ which means 'grains of' or a small particle (as in, grain of salt) before the word /'khoo-moos/.
Enjoy!

Hevre | Beera Meiselsa 18 | 15/07/2023
Hevre is a restaurant located in the heart of the jewish district, Kazimierz. As long as visiting this part of the Cracow is a must have and must been, this local is optional. On weekends it is mostly crowded, busy and loud. But to be fair, it is a place one of a kind. The restaurant is inside a building that have served as a synagogue some time ago. It has a special vibe, especially considering the light and chandeliers.
The cuisine mains in Jewish food, when also being a mix of Italian, French and Polish cuisine. For eating here i recommend something of a snack rather than a full meal. A board of cheeses and a board of meats + a good red wine or a wine of a house will make your evening a magical and romantic experience.

Chag Purim Sameach!! Happy Purim!! 👑👑👑👑 I made these Hamantaschen using @kingarthurbaking’s recipe and they are DELICIOUS. I opted for raspberry, Cherry, and apricot preserves to use as filling instead of using their home made poppyseed filling. It tasted absolutely amazing. 10/10 am using this recipe again. 🫧 #chagsameach #purim #purimsameach #jew #jewish #jewishfood #jews #jewsofinstagram #hamantaschen #food #foodie #cookie #dessert #jewishdessert #cookies #sweets #tasty #iamhungry #feedme #sweets #sweettooth (at Dallas, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpeOexMszVn/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Breaking fast. It was casual this year. @slimzadie drove into town to be here for his fast, before sunset. On Yom Kippur I spent much of my day at @thesunriseproject prepping for our first Wednesday Community Meal. Steven spent his day in reflection, meditation and communion with God, as is his tradition. His atonal will carry him through this next year with love and joy in his heart and a light mind, free of past burdens. This man has made my life so rich and layered. My family joined us to break fast with a simple lox and bagel dinner, as his mother did. I added the Sunrise yummy Chicken Noodle Soup and we finished with apple pie, a variation on our usual apples and honey. For two hours after we at we sat at the table, laughed and told stories, shared YouTube clips and remembered our past. As Steven has folded me into his family’s Jewish traditions, my family has folded him into our hearts. My kids’s dad comes from a tradition that feels very strongly about food, as do many Jewish families. And with a chef as their mom, my kids appreciate all kinds of new and lovely foods. Lox and bagels dinner wasn’t new to them, but the idea that there is an occasion, a high holy day, no less, makes this simple meal nourishing mind/body/spirit. And soon there will be potato latkes and brisket, Tzimmes, and I may even learn to make blintzes this year. In a time where life has seemed so hard and the world has seemed so broken, meeting and falling in love with this sweet, kind man with a different way of seeing the world, hasn’t always been easy or pretty, but it has been a gift. He has enriched our lives and fills my heart. A little late, but I wanted to take a moment out to share our Yom Kippur breaking fast celebration. May you be at peace #yomkippur #highholydays #joy #family #love #lox #breakingfast #jewish #jewishfood #jewishholidays #jewishtradition #bagels #simple #lfk #lawrenceks #atonement #food #foodie #chef (at Lawrence, Kansas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjdAjmbuUoc/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Why are you smarter and a better parent than me, please explain to me in excruciating detail the ways that I am better than you so I learn a valuable lesson about how actually I'm great all the time.
Tumblr media
It is astounding how much I hate it, before I saw it, i would have said, "Girl i survived Bebefinn" but bebefinn is ANNOYING, the wiggles are ANNOYING, but Peppa I am like, "Uh, beeb if you act like this cunt I will end you" (but said as you would to a three year old)
Tumblr media
My favorites of hers are Shaboom, which is a Jewish preschool age type show that teaches about jewish values and lessons, and Miss Rachel, which teaches phonics and actual useful shit. I have a lot of fondness for the old school sesame street as well, there's an episode of Cookie World that makes me laugh every time, and I like talking to Beeb about Cookie and Gonger's Moster Foodie Truck.
But yeah, there's nothing I would watch without her ahaha. Honestly, I need to make my own show called like, fuck, Davy the Grade Horse or something, where we learn valuable country lessons like, "No one wants to hear about it!" and "Get up! It can't hurt that bad" or "Everyone fucking contributes or they don't get shit"or "Turns out, you're the one fucking up a lot of your own life" or many other things that I would like beeb to learn that people on tumblr would tell me makes me a monster or whatever. But I also would turn to adults watching it alone and be like, "Ain't you 36 or some shit? Read a goddamn book."
Tumblr media
I won't watch Bluey for two reasons:
I won't pay for Disney.
:
Tumblr media
I just can't even engage in good faith with the show because of the number of grown ass adults without children who are trying to fucking tell me Bluey is the media of the age that makes them feel seen and understood. And every time I say, "I am 38 years old and I don't want to watch a preschool show" I get accused of being prejudiced and yes, i absolutely do prejudge a show based on the fact that it is for the 3 to 6 set. Great for 3 to 6 year olds. Great for parents who are having to watch this shit that it is apparently not annoying. But I prefer to see life reflected through an adult lens.
So, I would hate Bluey for reasons that have nothing to do with the source material. I know this. I struggle with almost every cartoon adults get into because they want it to be Citizen Fucking Kane or something but it's at best a decent show for children.
Tumblr media
I have never seen Caillou and do not plan to! Honestly, Peppa was not going to be a thing in our house but unfortunately I am married, and unfortunately my wife doesn't go, "no, we're not watching that because it's annoying" like certain other parents named Papa who are me she has.

Shakshuka, a dish that feels like a warm embrace, is not just a meal; it's a story on a plate, capturing the essence of Israeli culture and its rich, diverse culinary landscape.
Imagine a skillet sizzling with a vibrant mixture of tomatoes, onions, and peppers, all simmering gently until they meld into a rich, flavorful sauce.
The magic happens when eggs are nestled into this aromatic base, poached to perfection, with yolks just waiting to be broken, releasing their golden richness into the surrounding tomatoey haven.
In Israel, shakshuka is more than breakfast; it's a dish that brings people together, embodying the spirit of sharing and community.
Whether you're sitting in a bustling market in Tel Aviv, a cozy café in Jerusalem, or around a kitchen table with family, the experience of dipping your bread into the shakshuka's heart is a moment of connection, not just with the food but with the stories and traditions it represents.
For those of us living abroad, recreating shakshuka in our kitchens is a way to bridge continents, connecting us back to the land of blue skies and Mediterranean breezes.
It's a dish that speaks of adaptability and creativity, reflecting the Israeli ethos of making the most out of what's available, transforming simple ingredients into something extraordinary.
Shakshuka is not just a culinary delight; it's a lesson in history, culture, and the joy of sharing. It teaches us that food is more than sustenance; it's a language of its own, capable of conveying love, heritage, and the simple pleasure of a meal shared.
It's a dish that invites you to explore, to taste, and to fall in love with the flavors of Israel, making you feel, with every bite, a little closer to its sun-drenched landscapes and vibrant life.

an assortment of hcs related to bob's jewishness cause that's where my brain's at today:
he tries to make it to temple once or twice a month when he's stateside; really, bob just doesn't love going by himself and he loathes the trial and error of finding a new synagogue every time he moves
honestly, bob prioritizes finding good kosher supermarkets than a synagogue whenever he moves because he's a foodie and spends a lot of time cooking
he likes to say he follows 'lazy kosher', meaning he mainly focuses on the rules surrounding meat (except the bit about milk). if he's unsure when ordering out and it doesn't say anything on the menu, he just goes for a veggie option (shy boi to the max lmao)
if he were to get another tattoo (he has a bumble bee above his left elbow), he thinks he'd go for something in hebrew, but overall he's undecided if he'd get another one so it's very unlikely
bob doesn't fast on the anniversary of his sister's death, but he does light a candle for her every year and makes a donation to the children's hospital she was treated at. (related, he hated sitting shiva after she died, but that has more to do with him being a confused, angry ten year old struggling with such a huge loss.)
gracie gave him a floral mezuzah when he started flight school that he still uses

I had a truly bizarre and extremely convoluted dream in which I was an ambassador for Askazer-Shivadlakia, sent to US President Jed Bartlett to request his assistance in honoring a mutual defense pact with the Burundi. The official ambassadors uniform included a Sacred Shivadh Sword, which as a matter of tradition I was required to have blessed by said president.
No point to this, I just found it funny.
Also, Shivadhverse is basically my favorite thing.
Scenes I enjoy imagining: Eddie or Michaelis meeting Foodie!verse Isaiah Bradley--can you even imagine the level of sass?
There are a lot of ceremonial swords in Askazer-Shivadlakia, I don't see why a Shivadh ambassador wouldn't have one!
You can just see the walk-and-talk President Bartlett would have about having to meet with this random ambassador from a European micronation so that he can bless the sword. Why do they even bother having a king if they also go through the bother of having elections? If he got enough congresspeople on side, could he be king instead of president? ("They wanted to make George Washington king, you know." "Yes, sir, I know that and so does every student you ever taught in history class.") Why do they have an ambassador from a country with a population smaller than the number of tourists who visit Washington DC in a month?
(I googled that, it's likely true. 23 million tourists a year!)
Then he’s warming up for a rant about why a Catholic president should be blessing a Jewish sword in the first place and CJ heads him off with "Sir, I hate to bring this up, but you know that cheese the West Wing kitchen serves that you really like? With the blue rind?"
"You mean the cheese I would endorse as the official presidential cheese if I could?"
"Yes, sir. It's made exclusively in Askazer-Shivadlakia."
"Did you practice saying the name?"
"I did, Mr. President, because I too appreciate a fine cheese. A fine cheese we will be bereft of if we make enemies of this tiny nation by snubbing their sword."
"All right, I'll bless the damn sword."
As for the foodieverse, it is very fun to imagine the Shivadh royals getting to meet our various Food Superheroes. Eddie loves to witness AND participate in sass, after all.
