How Do You Serve? Our Word For The Session Is Seva!
Our regular schedule for increasing our mat practice. Seva is our challenge for off the mat practice. Seva is a Sanskrit word that means selfless service or, as I like to think of it, service from the heart. I invite you to join us for a long session to practice Seva with us, along with any other way you practice yoga. You can join us on the mat, but there are lots of ways to practice Off The…

Moving Toward 2024
I love a new beginning. I mean seriously LOVE, don’t you? I love Sunday, cause it’s a new week, I love right before the dawn, cause it’s a new day. I even like September cause I have deep memories of the new school year that I STILL feel, even though I haven’t been a student for a loooong time. So, of course I adore the New Year. It’s the Grandmama of the new. It’s so delicious. There is…

Happy Monday! Rest With Me
Happy Monday! I’m feeling better. After not being sick for a very long time, I have decided I’m definitely not a fan. I haven’t had a virus since 2016. The only other time I’ve been sick since then is with an intestinal thing two years ago from something I ate. Thank you yoga for my strong long immune system. The thing that was wonderful? I was able to rest deeply because I’ve been working on…

I Will Do Less
This is your daily reminder to slow down and rest. Stop doing so much. This session, A Yogi Kitchen is focusing on the word Thrive. You can join us in class as we focus on the word during on check-in at the beginning of class and savasana at the end of class. You can breathe into the word repeating it gently to yourself during your own meditations. You can work this week to align your actions…

How To Heal Knees and Lungs
It’s a weird combo right? Healing lungs and knees doesn’t seem like they go together, right? That is the beautiful thing about yoga. Yoga works mind/body/spirit, regardless of what you’re focusing on. Having said that, it works exponentially better when you have willingness to focus on the real issue. This is yoga therapy. Yoga therapy invites you to be super honest with yourself and grow your…

Your Worth Is Deep
“Your worth is deep.“ For years I have taught that you are worthy because you breathe. Your worth is not connected to your bank account, your address, what you drive, the numbers on the scale or the tag on your back. You are worthy because you draw breath. Period. I pulled a new card from Rest Deck by Tricia Hersey on Sunday. I received Rest Deck as a gift from a dear friend and yoga student…

Happy Tuesday!
Happy Tuesday! More Tuesday love, cause it just doesn’t get enough. We dropped everything and came to to Chicago in June to help care for my mother after her stroke. Now, instead of opening the back door to let Xander out, we walk daily, several times a day. I have released the guilt around not giving him enough walks, cause when it’s hot out I don’t even go to the backyard with him. I open…

How Do You Earn Rest? The Answer Is In Your Yoga Practice.
I’ve been listening to who I am mind/body/spirit. Deeply. I’m being asked to Rest. Rest deeply. So, I’m taking time to be still. I’m taking walks on the beach. I’m eating as many eggs on toast as I want. Why is that rest? Cause, it’s super fast and easy and it brings me big comfort. It’s not hard to digest and allows my body to not work too hard. How do I get to do this rest? How did I earn…

Are You Resting With Us?
Rest is our word all session, which lasts another week. Every session we focus on a word for 4-6 weeks. It enhances our yoga practice on and off the mat. Rest is one of my favorite words of all-time. I invite you to Rest with us. Rest for Rest’s sake. Do you know how to do that? Rest for your own sake, not for more productivity, not so you can fit one more thing in, or meet one more person’s…

Slowing Down is the Advanced Work
Our word for the session is Rest. Rest is radical. It asks you to stop being busy and pay attention to what’s really important. It asks you to stop punishing your body by dumping cortisol and other damaging stress hormones. It asks you to heal. You cannot heal without Rest. Rest is liberation. It is freedom from grind and hustle culture. It is pushing back against the oppression of a culture…

How Community Care is Teaching Me To Rest
Our word this session is test. So I’m taking a few days to slow down and be. How is rest showing up for you? I’m reading the New York Times best-selling book, Rest is Resistance and breathing into what rest looks like and the lies that I’ve internalized. If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend it, even though I’m only a few chapters in. It’s shifting my thinking and asking me to reconsider,…

How Seva Changes You
Has your week been busy and unfocused? I get it. There are days where it’s hard to remember what day it is. Are you like me and everyday is different? And yet you still find it hard to focus on the day in front of you? It’s time to open your heart to practice Seva. On Wednesdays, we serve. We dedicate our time to serving from the heart. I know, it feels hard to find time for one more thing.…

How We Create Community
A Yogi Kitchen and Pantry is the baby I’ve been pining for. For decades I’ve wanted to do the work I’m drawn to do and put that work into the community in a significant way. I didn’t know how to make it work, so my volunteer life and my work life have always been separate. Sure I’d get asked to donate 30 minutes of my time to teach yoga to school kids or help stretch out runners after a 5k, but…

How Wednesday Can Help You Reset
Sundays I invite you to set intention for the week. I encourage you to close your eyes during savasana and breathe into how you feel at the end of our practice. Sink into the feelings of peace and relaxation, the discomfort that may have risen with gentle backbends and forward folds. Sit with it, I often say. Let it be incomfortable. Then I invite you to take those sensations, both lovely and…

Seva, the Practice of Selfless Service
It’s the mid part of the week and time for our Seva practice. Seva is an integral part of a full yoga practice. You practice asana for your body. You practice dhyaana for your brain. You practice pranayama for your energetic body. Ultimately all the ways that you practice come together to unite mind/body/spirit. So, why would you practice Seva? It seems like you’ve got everything covered,…
