"Brooks by admission is not really concerned with nature. He considers himself a rather casual observer of its phenomena. It is more to man's spirit that the artist speaks. In 1953 for the exhibition, 'Contemporary American Painting and Sculpture,' at the University of Illinois, Urbana, Brooks wrote:

'I work under these assumptions: that no one is contained by his own skin, but shares his birth, living and death with all others; that a private symbolism is not even possible; that my painting will occupy others as it has me; that whether it does, and how soon, depends on things we cannot know--the ultimate power of the painting and the need felt for it; that manipulation of meaning to assure an audience would destroy the reality of the work and debase the concept of communication; that good painting, as always, is a door opened to man's spirit; that it will not repel because of its obscurity, but may because of its directness.'"

I recently went back to the Marine Air Terminal at LaGuardia Airport and got to see the famed Flight Mural.

Painted by James Brooks from 1938 -1942, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) funded project measures 237 feet long by 12 feet high and encloses the interior of the terminal.

The images depict the history of flight from the mythological story of Icarus and Daedalus to ideas of early flight of DaVinci, the Wright Brothers "Kitty Hawk", early flight to the era of the flying boats. The first seaplane to commence operations at the Marine Air Terminal (MAT): the Pan Am Boeing 314 aka the “Yankee Clipper.”

In a moment of disbelief, during the red scare of the 1950s, the mural was painted over in 1952. The mural was believed to have a socialist view and it was covered up an attempt to modernize the MAT. Luckily someone had the foresight to coat the mural in a lacquer. The painting was rediscovered in the 1970s. After funds were raised, the mural renovated in the 1980s with the MAT being designated a New York Interior Landmark. It is also listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Watched James Brooks’ romantic comedy “Spanglish”.

Brooks is the director who wrote and directed “Terms of Endearment” (1983) but never reached the same level again.

That’s also true for “Spanglish”. The starting point is interesting enough: a poor Mexican mother (Paz Vega) and daughter move to California in search for a better life. The mother, who doesn’t speak any English - the daughter acts as translator -, becomes the housekeeper for an American couple in affluent Santa Monica.

The movie lacks sufficient drama, it’s a series of small things happening in the Clasky household (Adam Sandler and Téa Leoni) that are nevertheless presented as life-changing, coming-of-age events.

Unconvincing.
