Making Mutant Magic with Head Director Jake Castorena of 'X-Men '97' @MarvelStudios #XMen97
October 31, 1992. It’s not a hyperbole to say that was the day my life changed. X-Men: The Animated Series debuted on Fox Kids, and the minute I tuned in, it began a lifetime of obsession and passion with the Marvel Universe and comic book superheroes that has persisted into my adult years. X-Men '97: 5 Things We Learned at Comic-Con 2023
Marvel Studios mostly sat out this year’s Comic-Con, doing little more than releasing a new trailer for The Marvels during the show. But there was one upcoming Marvel project that made a surprise appearance at the convention.
Fans lucky enough to attend the "Designing the X-Men: A This Week in Marvel Special Event" panel were treated to updates on the animated series X-Men ‘97, straight from producers Beau DeMayo, Jake Castorena and Larry Houston. There was even new footage shown of this hotly anticipated X-Men revival.
That footage isn't being released online, but fear not. IGN is here to break down what was shown and what we learned about X-Men '97 at Comic-Con.
X-Men '97 features the voices of Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, Catherine Disher, Chris Potter, Alison Sealy-Smith, Adrian Hough, Christopher Britton and Alyson Court. The series will stream exclusively on Disney+.

Found a few days ago, the definitive Batman actor Kevin Conroy passed away. Such a huge loss of a wonderful man and unrivalled voice of the Caped Crusader. Asked Jake Castorena, who had worked on DC animated projects with Kevin before, eg Justice League Action and Justice League vs the Fatal Five, what it was like working with him. Jake gushed about what an honour it was to work with Kevin and he clearly misses him every bit as much as we Batman aficionados do. Still, let us treasure these memories for many years to come.

I was sad, I was pretty devastated, especially since this is a character I’ve loved for so, so long, and then to get to play the character and then to find out they’re dying halfway through the season. I was devastated. Yeah, I had to go through my own mourning process in the same way you would with a friend or a loved one in a weird way. I mean, obviously not to the same degree, but there was this feeling of, ‘Welcome to the world of X-Men!’ And then it’s like, ‘And then you die!’ And I as like, ‘You couldn’t even wait a couple more episodes!’ It’s very strange and bittersweet. I’m thrilled to voice Gambit in any capacity, so to do it in these pivotal moments was an honor. But yeah, I definitely felt heartsick and sad. Jake [Castorena] and Beau [DeMayo] had to call me and placate me and tell me, ‘It’s ok, this is a good story.’ I was like, ‘Ok…’ So I felt very sad.

X-Men '97 Directors Discuss Potential Animated Movie:
The directors behind Disney+'s hit series X-Men '97 recently shared their thoughts on the possibility of bringing the iconic mutants to the big screen in an animated movie. While Marvel Studios focuses on its live-action X-Men projects, Chase Conley, Emi Yonemura, and Jake Castorena discussed their enthusiasm for the idea.
Conley expressed confidence in the audience's interest in an animated X-Men movie, dubbing it a "slam dunk" concept. He highlighted the potential of a movie budget to enhance the animation quality and allow for meticulous attention to detail in every shot.
Yonemura envisioned elevating the series' already impressive animation to cinematic levels, drawing inspiration from acclaimed animated films like Spider-Verse and recent Turtles adaptations. She emphasized the opportunity to deliver visually stunning action sequences reminiscent of classic Japanese animation.
Castorena echoed the sentiment, proposing the possibility of concluding X-Men '97 with a feature-length movie. He emphasized the importance of fan demand and Marvel's approval, expressing eagerness to translate the series' style and characters to the silver screen.
However, while an animated X-Men movie would undoubtedly be exciting for fans, it could potentially clash with Marvel Studios' live-action plans for the franchise. Competing X-Men features in theaters simultaneously might not be strategically wise. Nevertheless, fans can still anticipate a satisfying finale to X-Men '97, with the possibility of expanded plans beyond its initial three-season arc.
In conclusion, the directors' enthusiasm for an animated X-Men movie reflects the success and popularity of X-Men '97, showcasing their dedication to delivering high-quality storytelling and animation to both small and big screens.
