Probably a bit tmi, no need to post if uncomfortable. What's your plan if you were to get your period? If I were to do a weeks long trip I was contemplating on a diva cup, but still feel kind of gross though sanitary wise
I've been worried about this a lot actually since the JMT is so long that it's almost inevitable and the idea of carrying around a ziploc full of used tampons is frankly not appealing lol. It sounds like the most common solution is a menstrual cup and a backcountry bidet, but I don't know how well menstrual cups or rings work for folks who haven't had penetrative sex (read: how easy it is to remove as needed). If that's not an issue for you I'd say you're on the right track with the diva cup and a bidet, or diva cup and wet wipes if you don't mind packing those out.
Also no sweat about TMI. I think folks who deal with The Other Shark Week should be able to talk about it without it being an issue :) Half the population or so goes through it, so. No shame there.

Dangers of Hiking the PCT Loom as the 2021 Season Approaches
This is an excerpt of a story from the San Francisco Chronicle that appeared in the February 21st issue.  I do find that there are increasing numbers of hikers populating the PCT whose backpacking and wilderness experience is very thin while the dangers remain the same (perhaps even greater with the addition of forest fire).
By Gregory Thomas
Tumblr media
As the spring hiking season approaches, veterans of California’s trail community are urging long-distance backpackers to take extra precautions to avoid catastrophe. Looming over the season is the unceasing threat of the coronavirus as well as a tragic snow-related death last year on the Pacific Crest Trail.
Trail authorities are chiefly concerned that inexperienced hikers, seduced by the prospect of a life-changing adventure on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and the natural beauty of the John Muir Trail (JMT), may be venturing unprepared into dangerous situations in the remote wilderness.
Whereas older generations of outdoors enthusiasts likely built their skills and experience under the guidance of seasoned mentors, younger hikers seem prone to digging for trail expertise in internet blogs and social media. Hundreds of thousands of through-hikers coalesce around hubs on Facebook to discuss strategy and gear. But the vibe of comment threads can turn macho or hostile, and the information exchanged isn’t always sound.
“A lot of the voices (in online trail groups) are great, but some have been historically dismissive of safety,” said Jack Haskel, trail information manager at the Pacific Crest Trail Association, which issues long-distance permits to PCT hikers on behalf of the U.S. Forest Service. “Something we’ve been talking about as a long-distance hiking community for years now is, how do we build a community of alumni who stick around and offer their insights to new generations of hikers?”
Through-hiking the 2,660-mile PCT, which spans mountain ranges between Mexico and Canada, is a six-month commitment to self-sufficiency in the woods. The highly popular JMT, which extends from Yosemite Valley 217 miles south to Mount Whitney, overlaps with hazardous sections of the PCT in the High Sierra.
Tumblr media
“This is not a beginner experience, but a lot of people hike the JMT as their first through-hike,” said Inga Aksamit, of Sonoma, who administers several JMT groups on Facebook. She says JMT permits, which become available online each morning for spring and summer hiking dates, are getting snapped up within a minute or two. “That’s really concerning to me,” she said.
The two trails, once the byways of fringe dirtbaggers, now draw tens of thousands of nature lovers to California’s mountains each year. Many aspire to follow in the footsteps of Cheryl Strayed, whose 2012 hiking memoir, “Wild,” became a best-seller and popular film, or re-create the spectacular nature photos of their favorite Instagram influencers.
Last year, the onset of the coronavirus pandemic prompted the Forest Service to stop issuing long-distance PCT permits partway through the season. But many hikers proceeded anyway, sparking vitriolic debate and shaming in the online groups where hikers congregate. This year, permits are back on — the trail association anticipates a return to pre-pandemic levels of about 7,900 permits even as international hikers are expected to stay home.
The potential for hikers to carry the virus into the 30-some-odd remote mountain towns strung along the PCT users is a theme of many social media discussions this year.
“It’s not just the risk in the wilderness this year,” Haskel said. “We’re worried about our trail communities.”
No one keeps precise statistics on trail deaths, injuries and rescues, but there have been at least 15 fatalities on the PCT since the early 1980s. The top causes are drownings at river-crossings and falls. In 2019, a 67-year-old man hiking alone died on the trail near Mather Pass after apparently slipping on a small patch of ice and hitting his head on a rock.
June is regarded as the most treacherous month to be on the trails. That’s typically the peak of seasonal snowmelt in the High Sierra, when summer’s heat flushes torrents of water through alpine streambeds that hikers must ford. Two female through-hikers drowned in Sierra river crossings in July 2017 following a winter of unusually high snowfall.
Tumblr media
With so much new interest in long-distance treks, administrators like Aksamit feel more compelled to issue words of warning.
“I sound the alarm on posts that we get on June entries to caution solo hikers against tackling stream crossings on their own,” Aksamit said. “People think we’re fear-mongers sometimes, but a lot of people just don’t know what they’re getting into.”
An unlikely mentor has emerged this year. Doug Laher, a medical association executive from Fort Worth, Texas, has never set foot on the PCT or JMT. But last year, 11 days into his PCT adventure, Laher’s 22-year-old son, Trevor, slipped on an icy slope in the San Jacinto Mountains, near Palm Springs, and fell to his death.
The tragedy rippled through the trail community, in part because Trevor was a strong young man who appeared to be prepared for the hazards of high-mountain hiking. But also because Doug Laher has since accumulated a deep knowledge of trail dangers and spoken about his son’s death in painful detail on the culture’s niche podcasts and online forums.
“Most days I drift, merely existing in a world when everyone else is living,” Laher wrote. “But this helps: the idea that Trevor’s death didn’t happen in vain. There must be something good that rises from our tragedy.”
Trevor’s fateful trek appears to be sinking in as a cautionary tale. Doug Laher says he has received hundreds, if not thousands, of emails and Facebook comments from grateful hikers.
One came from Claire Stam, 24, of Jackson, Wyo., who hiked most of the PCT last year.
Trevor Laher’s death occurred two months before Stam’s hike began, and she had read an early account of the episode. After five months on the trail, Stam and her partner had put the bulk of the trek behind them when they encountered deep snow in Washington’s Cascade Range, 30 miles shy of the trail’s end at the Canadian border. While standing in a blizzard and considering whether to push on, Trevor’s story flashed into her mind. She and her partner decided to call off their hike and go home.
“I was so devastated,” Stam said. “Part of me thought I could do it if I really focused. But then I thought, Trevor probably thought the same thing. I knew that if he had a second chance, he would have made the decision that I made.”
Doug Laher’s message to through-hikers is straightforward: Do your research, carry appropriate gear and know how to use it, read the trail conditions and be prepared to abandon your hike. But to hikers who have in many cases dreamed about the PCT for years and rearranged their lives for the trek, turning away from a rushing river or snowy ridge can feel like chickening out.
“Sometimes through-hikers don’t know where to distinguish the line between discomfort and danger,” Stam said.
Still, Doug Laher intends to continue reaching out to hikers. “I’ve found my new purpose in life,” he said. “If I can influence a hiker’s decisions to be more safe, that’s a win.”

New Year, New Me.
As silly as the cliche’d adage is, I want it to be true this year. 2021 was rough on the Woods’ household. It was a blessing in a lot of other ways, but it was the most difficult year of my life.
It was a fucking roller coaster: Hope in the new vaccine and administration, purchasing a home, hurt and separation from vaccine/politically related shit, finally bagging the JMT, friends moving away, beginning the transition of careers (again), the frustration of covid scares, and the realization that we’re bringing a child into this world. This whole year really has been like the JMT, and I guess I’ll have to unpack that now.
I did not read the guide book for the John Muir Trail. I didn’t look at the specific mileage markers between stops prior to setting foot on the trail. I did not check how many calories we would need per day, nor how many resupplies we would need. Logistically, Haley did all the leg work to get us on the trail. I did prep and some research, but Haley’s been selling and talking about the JMT perhaps every month of the year for the last 5 years. She’s the one that knows that trip, and since we’re partners, I too have that knowledge I guess. It’s basically osmosis, where I just absorb the information.
You can, therefore, empathize when I came to the realization that the JMT was not in fact flat. Shocked, I was, that as soon as we got to a high point, be it a pass or a peak or a ridge, we just as quickly began descending. We’d descend throughout back through the tree line, often fallowing a cascading creek or tributary, racing it back down to the bottom of a deep ravine. We’d greet others that were going the other direction, slogging up the steep switch backs and nearly always dropping a joke about how they wished they were going downhill. And what would always be awaiting us at the bottom? That’s right, you guessed it! An ascent. Then followed by a descent, and then another ascent. It was never ending elevation change.
And that’s how this year was. Constant ups, to the highest peaks, blissful and exhausting to reach, but joyous at the top, only to plunge down the other side. These were drastic ascents and drastic descents. It was difficult to overcome these challenging ascents, but we made it. We bought a home. We moved in and started work on it. I made the decision to change careers to something more life-giving and started my Master’s and Credential program. We talked about starting a family, and we’re now expecting in April. These were difficult peaks to conquer, but we did eventually get to the top, but the top is not always the destination. The peak is not somewhere that is made to be inhabited for permanent dwelling. It is not hospitable there - it is void of all elements required to support life. We cannot live in bliss all the time, but sometimes we can be lucky enough to breathe in it’s crisp, thin air.
But we can’t stay there. We’re not made to.
Instead, we have to seek water and supplies, which are down in the valleys below. Further down the trail, once you’re in the tree line and often near water is where mother nature provides. Near the creeks grow plants that can help sustain life. Mushrooms grow abundantly in the warmer lower elevations where the air can hold more humidity. Water is more plentiful as it too descends the mountains, joining with other tributaries to create roaring rivers. It is not a mountain-top experience, but one cannot get to the peak without life-sustaining supplies. The whole of the trip isn’t defined by the peaks or by the ravines, but rather by the journey it’s self.
The ravines were especially hard this year. I have been dealing with mental health issues for the last couple years, and my depression has hit differently and more deeply this year. I struggle daily with thoughts that I’m not worthy and that I’m basically a grade-A fuck up - that I am constantly letting others down, that I’m letting myself down, that I’m letting my wife down and already failing our family. And what compounds the difficulty of depression, especially in my situation right now, is that so many amazing things have happened this year, so I feel like I should be happier. I should be happy and joyous we bought a house. I should be thankful we were able to conceive easily. I should be thankful I am pursuing a career I am passionate about and will help others. Lots of shoulds.
But the journey is not defined by the peaks. The journey is not defined by the perfect shot of the meadow and river and mountains and clouds. The journey is not defined by the view from our back porch. No, the journey is defined by the distance you’ve come. How far have you gone and which route did you take. And the retelling of the journey isn’t just the examination of map and directions, nor is it the showing of beautiful photos from all the peaks. It may seem like it to others, that the journey is defined by the highlight reel. A highlight reel is just the bullshit façade of the trip that glosses over the painful moments that humanize the experience. The real journey is found in the tales of trials and tribulations and frustrations and cuss words and tears and pain and bruised hips and failed no-bake desserts and awful dehydrated mole. The real journey reflects humanity, all the joy but not without the sadness.
So, this year for me, was full of ups and downs. But how would I actually explain this year to a person? I’d probably have to tell them all about the JMT and what it’s like to be on the trail for 14 whole days without a cell phone or a worry other than where will I be sleeping tonight and how much water is in my pack. But once I told them about the trip, which arguably is one of the greatest highs of my life, I would also have to show that the trip was accompanied by boughts of uncontrollable fury, punched walls, curse words, and self-loathing. Would I say this whole year was shit? 2021? Nah, you know what 2021, you weren’t all that bad. You had some fucking awful moments, but you had some memorable moments as well. I was stretched in new ways and I think I made some legitimate progress on who I am as a person. I know that I have anger issues, and those are all based in major insecurities, but I have the most amazing wife that reminds me that I’m worth a damn. I didn’t achieve my goals for the year and I ran and biked less than any of the last 5 years, but I did do more house projects and started classes again. I didn’t keep my long-distance relationships going strong this year, and I don’t have a ‘but’ for this one. It just was something I was bad at last year, but this is a new year.
And so, for 2022, I hope my journey will be different, and I hope for more personal growth.
I plan to run 1000 miles this year as I train for a 50K and 40 miler.
I hope to read 12 books this year (which I have failed at the previous two years)
I want to be better about birthdays of friends and family - I never call people on their birthday, but I want to change that.
I hope to have a routine where I wake up and clean the house and do the dishes and prepare for the day
I hope to drink less, and be okay not drinking at social engagements. Drinking is not great for me. I don’t like who I am when I drink.
Most of all, I want to be a good dad and husband as we welcome a new human into this world. That scares the shit out of me, but I know it’s doable.
We just may need a few more resupplies and a slower pace, but we’ll be sure to bag some peaks and plenty of ravines this year.

Every time my barista asks me another pointed question about the JMT I become more aware that I am the thruhiker equivalent of a toddler but also I'm extremely stubborn so I just keep making aggressive eye contact and saying yes of COURSE I have/know about/am prepared for that thing you are asking me about as a method of informing me that I do not have my shit together, and then I scribble more stuff in my to-google list like a manic undergrad prepping for the midterm of a maybe twice-attended gen ed elective.

The John Muir Trail Hiker Survey (2021)
The John Muir Trail Hiker Survey (2021)
In an effort to get a more comprehensive look at thru-hikers and the long-distance hiking community, this year I launched the John Muir Trail Hiker Survey. The John Muir Trail (JMT) is a more accessible trail than the Pacific Crest Trail or the Continental Divide Trail and I anticipate it will be interesting to follow up this year’s round of surveys. The JMT Survey is meant to be a useful…

Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycle Ramp
Sydney Harbour Bridge cycle ramp, ASPECT Studios NSW Architecture Photos, Australia project shortlist

Sydney Harbour Bridge cycle ramp shortlist news
A team led by ASPECT Studios has been selected to develop its concept for the Sydney Harbour Bridge northern access ramp project, following an international design competition.
ASPECT Studios’ team is one of the three practices selected by Transport for New South Wales in a competitive design process to design the important missing link that will allow cyclists to transition from the bridge’s northern end to Bradfield Park.
ASPECT Studios is leading a team that comprises Collins and Turner, Yerrabingin, Design 5 Architects, Eckersley O’Callaghan, JMT Consulting and Electrolight.
Sacha Coles, Director of ASPECT Studios says, “Our team is incredibly honoured to move into the next phase of this competition alongside Civille and REALMstudios. Working on a critical public infrastructure project that will make a positive contribution to the health and wellbeing of the community, improve public accessibility around the harbour, and respects the site’s significant heritage and cultural values is something we are very passionate about.”
The Sydney Harbour Bridge cycleway is the most heavily used in the city, with approximately 2,000 bike trips taken each weekday. The northern access project will complete this vital piece of crucial bicycle infrastructure in an equitable and graceful way.
Currently, riders must climb 55 steps at the northern end of the bridge and push their bikes through safety barriers at the top for access. This is a safety hazard that prevents a large portion of the community from using their bikes and causes slow movement and congestion at peak travel times. It is essential that the cycleway provides an inclusive design solution that meets the needs of all users.
Many plans to replace the steps have been explored over the years and during this time the project has garnered a vast interest from the community and local residents. For over a decade, the New South Wales Government has undertaken design consultations to try find the best possible solution to the increasingly challenging issue of both enhancing pedestrian safety and improving cycle access to the bridge.
The commitment from Transport for New South Wales to enhance the safety and capacity of the cycleway, increase connections to the wider bike network and make bike riding convenient and attractive for more people all whilst embracing Indigenous culture, respecting the sites heritage and prioritising public open space is evident in their extensive efforts on this project to date.
Each of the teams were tasked to design creative solutions which were sensitive to place, underpinned by Country centred design and heritage considerations that delivered cyclists from the bridge to the park in an easy, safe and high-quality manner.
Appreciating the site’s context was key in the design approach and balancing intervention and preservation has informed all design decisions. ASPECT’s design aims to deliver on the primary challenge, which is to achieve functionality whilst preserving what is unique and powerful about the setting and what is valued by the community; that being – Country, the bridge and Bradfield Park.
The ASPECT-led team designed the concept with an underlying principle of Country to Country. They allowed the site’s typography and significant existing cultural values guide the design of a 21st century piece of public infrastructure which is distinctly of its place.
The concept is designed to preserve the cherished park and its views of the sweeping arches of the harbour bridge, whilst minimising conflict between pedestrians and cyclists. The structural detail has a lightness, fluidity and transparency with equal considerations to robustness, buildability, sustainability and long-term maintenance.
Each of the three design concepts are now live for community engagement, allowing the opportunity to provide feedback and input on the ideas presented. A design jury and Transport for New South Wales will guide the selection of a winning team. The successful team will then complete the concept and detailed design to enable delivery of the project, expected to start in 2023.
Transport for NSW shortlist
Transport for NSW is seeking community feedback on a shortlist of three initial concept designs for a bike ramp at the northern end of the Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway. Each of the three designs has been prepared by leading urban design and architectural firms through a competitive design process. The design firms are:
ASPECT Studios, with Collins and Turner Architects, Yerrabingin, Eckersley O’Callaghan Engineers, JMT Consulting and Design 5 Architects
REALMstudios, with Djinjama, Aileen Sage, Lucas Stapleton Johnson, Dr. Mike Harris, PMI Engineers and Nick Schliepe
Civille, with Ney & Partners, H+N+S Landscape Architects, Djinjama and Sue Rosen Associates
Whilst Transport for NSW are seeking feedback on the three shortlisted designs, they would also like to hear what you think of their design concepts for a separated cycleway on Alfred Street which would take bike riders from the new ramp to the existing cycle network.
Feedback on the three ramp designs and Alfred Street cycle path will be open from Monday 6 December 2021 to midnight on Sunday 16 January 2022.
