🎶 - @arcanescion requested Angelica to sing her a song
Caitlyn was no longer the child Angelica knew and loved; she had matured significantly, shedding her innocence along the way. Nevertheless, the love she felt for the other remained the same.
Despite acknowledging the changes that had taken place in the dark-haired woman's life during their years apart, Angelica wished to know if Caitlyn still remembered the time past.
When the new Chem Baroness asked her longtime friend to sing a song, the first that came to mind was from a children's play they had watched at the theater a decade ago.
"Dancing Bears Painted Wings Things I almost remember. And a song someone sings Once upon a December.
Someone holds me safe and warm. Horses prance through a silver storm. Figures dancing gracefully across my memory.
Far away, Long ago, Glowing dim as an ember, Things my heart Used to know Things it yearns to remember And a song someone sings Once upon a December"
Angelica's voice remained as captivating as ever, perhaps even more now. There was something different, an underlying quality that resonated deeply within the hearts of those who listened. Her heart ached with nostalgia, and so did of others who could possible be eavesdropping on them. Would the same happen to Caitlyn?

come back home | j.h.s. | chapter one
a/n - devil works fast but i write faster, introducing a purple hearts au!! thought this could be fun to write! let me know if you guys want more i.b. purple hearts obviously
tw - men being gross, jake being a DICK but it’s okay we can change him ;)
Tumblr media
caitlyn tapped her pen against the bars railings. she was in the process of writing a new song, or trying to at least. she was debating going over to the piano to try and work on a tune but her train of thought was interrupted by penny’s words.
“if you want a share of the tip pot you’ll have to help me wipe down these counters” she spoke, tossing cait a spray bottle and a cloth.
sighing, she sprung into action, cleaning the sticky beer residue off the wooden counter tops and gently humming a tune to an unfinished song.
the bar was practically empty, only a few early patrons milling around waiting for the crowds to come flooding in. the godforsaken crowds. filled with fresh aviators ready to go on their first deployment.
she spent the next hour doing odd jobs for penny, restocking the bottles, checking the celler and dusting the piano even though it was never out of use long to collect dust between cait's song writing and the playing of popular naval anthems.
the bell rang on the door as 7 or 8 fresh faced aviators strutted through the entrance, joshing around and hitting each other in the arm playfully.
"oh god," cait complained, throwing her head back in protest, penny remarked some comment about how the aviators were her new best friends.
however through the crowd, a familiar face spotted cait as the bar. "hey stranger!" he called, pushing his way past the men.
"bradley!" cait excitedly shrieked, leaving the middle of the bar to throw her arms around him. she slapped his chest, "i missed you!"
he laughed at her, "i've missed you too caitie." the pair had grown up together, bradley occasionally babysitting cait, despite their small age difference. she was there for him when his mom died, when pete pulled his papers and he was there for her when her dad walked out, leaving cait and her mom alone.
she stroked his face, "what's with this mustache? i am not okay with this!" she giggled. although she was enjoying catching up with bradley, she could feel the eyes of his friends on her, on her body. "well, introduced me to your squadron!"
he went through the names, introducing each member as his friend, she could see their toxic masculinity practically seeping through their pores. cait took their orders and walked back to the bar, collecting the various drinks and arranging them on the tray.
when she looked over to group, she saw bradley harshly scolding "berlin”, one of the younger pilots, shaking his head in disapproval. she hoped that whatever dispute was going on between the two wouldn’t affect their deployment.
she made her way over to the table and she set the drinks down pushing them towards their respective owners.
“so we’re good enough to fight for your ass, but not touch it?” berlin spoke up, striking silence into the other men. clearly bradley had told them her ‘no military men’ rule.
“excuse me?” cait challenged, raising her eyebrow. she decided instead of causing a scene to just walk away.
rolling her eyes, she worked on serving other customers, making small talk and chatting with them about their day. she uncapped beer bottles and stuffed the lids in her pocket, a habit she had picked up from her first night, now, at home she had a small collection.
her heeled boots clicked along the floor as she made her way to the back, penny suggested a few minutes break to cool off and to drink some glucose gel to raise her blood sugar. dealing with diabetes was hard but it was that much when some man tried to hit on her.
after a few minutes she had calmed down and was ready to serve again, she led the storage room to find “hangman” standing at the bar.
“i just want to apologise for our friend,” he said, “he’s a bit… my names jake, what’s yours?” he offered his hand out to cait, almost as a peace offering. she turned the other way walking to the opposite side of the bar, but jake was relentless.
“don’t think i don’t know your type.” he stated bluntly.
“my type?” cait asked, genuinely interested as to what group this man would brand her into.
“yeah, the girl who drives a lexus and probably has a million different flags hanging from her windowsill in support, but when it actually comes down to fighting for those groups, you’re no where to be seen! cause ‘guns and bombs are mean’ and you’re a pacifist”
“i’m sorry do you have a phd in mansplaining?”
“i guess it’s our job to fight for you!” he cut her off, “you know what i bet you even have a little peace dove tattooed on your back!”
“actually it’s on my ass, which you can’t touch but you can kiss!” she argued, walking off yet again to the other side of the bar to escape him.
jake looked over to the group and saw them mimicking explosions and laughing at him.

Random fallout 4 companion headcanons :)
Deacon would have the time of his life with those really goofy royalty free songs that YouTubers use.
I feel like he would also use SpongeBob soundtracks like this one. It would piss Danse off so much.
LIKE TOU CANR TELL ME THAT WHEN DANSE IS COMPLAINING ABOUT SOMETHING DEACON WOULDNT PLAY THIS 💀💀
Moving on!!! If you went in public with MacCready to a bar or whatever he would definitely be the type to stop all conversation to listen to other people’s drama. MAJOR EAVEDROPPER
Mac’s fave prewar plant is moss
He’s a Pearl Jam fan I SAID WHAT I SAID
I feel like overtime as he grows closer to sole he would feel bad about the caps they first paid him, even when he gave them back after his personal quest. Then he would feel bad about all the (life-saving) favors they did. So he’d try to repay that back. I feel like his love language (either pre-romance or unromanced) would be gift giving. Not monetary wise but just random trinkets he found, snacks, ammo, etc.
I think that max affinity MacCready would move in with sole, regardless if he’s romanced or not because he has literally nowhere else except for that back room in goodneighbor. They would be bunk mates and he’d call top bunk almost immediately.
Danse has very dry humor, the reason why so many people within the brotherhood think he’s so humorless is because the joke flies right over their head.
Danse would also move in after BB because again, has nowhere to go and sole wants to keep an eye on him. Not that he’d mind. Would get annoyed with MacCready eating his food though. (Let’s pretend soles house in sanctuary has like 3 bedrooms instead of two)
I hate how people choose to ignore how soft Cait gets when sole gets max affinity. She’s so sweet in her own way.
Even unromanced, Cait’s max affinity with f!sole feels borderline homosexual (I’m a fan)
Thinking about how common messed up teeth would be because finding tooth brushes and tooth paste would be too much of a hassle, not to mention there’s barely anyone who can do wisdom teeth removal, not like most people could afford it anyway
Danse is touchstarved (who isn’t in the commonwealth) but him to the extreme. Hates touching other people or being touched. Most he’ll do is shoulder pats for when someone is going though any emotional moment. That’s IT. He’d only really warm up to affection through sole. He wouldn’t initiate and he’d be tense the first few times when sole does. He has to push through the discomfort because as uncomfortable as he is, he really does enjoy affection from sole.
His reluctance to initiate touch would get worse after BB because he feels like he doesn’t deserve it. He definitely needs it though. Hug him plz. He is a cuddlebug to his core. Sole has to initiate most the time but they can tell he likes it because he leans into it. (And he doesn’t tell them to stop) But he does get a lot more jealous when sole touches someone else in front of him.
Lowkey feel like LOWKEY THOUGH that Danse would go through jealousy and possessiveness issues after BB. It would be weird because he feels like sole would do better without him and deserves someone better BUT he also doesn’t want to lose them because they’re all he has left. Clingy in a subtle way and gets super anxious when they leave on missions without him.
When did this mostly become about danse 💀
Hancock is really well read. Has read lots of classic literature like Frankenstein and Dracula. Loves Edgar Allen Poe. I think his favorite story would be Tom Sawyer. Would also LOVE Shawshank redemption.
I think if sole got close to Hancock, he would allow them and even enjoy them calling him Johnny.
Cait mentions Freud in the game, which is really funny but unexpected. She enjoys reading about science more then she lets on. Of course she’s no curie when it comes to interest in science, but I think she knows a fair bit about psychology and biology.
She also is one of those people who claim they don’t really care, but enjoys taking in the small things, like the sound of tree leaves in the wind as she sits outside, a good warm meal, a comfy bed, etc. she learned an appreciation to keep herself sane when she was younger.
I HATEEE how some fallout 4 writer’s completely destroy Cait’s character. Writing her as a drinker (after her quest) and a person without feelings. Like she’s sober of ALL things. That’s literally what the addiction-ending machine does. If you wrote her as an alcoholic BEFORE her personal quest then that rant wasn’t directed at you 😇 She also does have feelings and can be quiet sympathetic at times. She’s selfish and that can come across as cold but she’s not emotionless like come on y’all.
Anyways rant over 😇😇😇
MacCready is such a goofball I love him
Goofy ass smile

I'm delusional so this is a small essay on why I think my really self indulgent poly ship would work (sorry in advance if there are any grammar mistakes:P)
Lux/Cait/Sera/Jinx/Gwen essay
(penta ship essay)
(lightcannon) It all started with lux/jinx it works for obvious reasons star guardian and you really got me going music video XD
(sonic boom) then there is Sera/jinx jinx has been through so much pain and trauma that she deserves love and affection but most importantly understanding. Sera didn't experience anything even close to what jinx has been through but she can feel what she feels and help her with understanding all those emotions. also jinx could build something for her to help with the noise and they probably would just build stuff together. Also they both kinda hear voices.
(pistolwhip) With Cait/jinx it depends on where they star as enemy's or strangers but no matter with one it is they just have a lot in common they always wanted to be understood, they where outcasts and only had one friend to relay on. Both of them like guns and at the beginning of the series powder just wanted to help, it didn't change it's just who she's helping and with what means.
Gwen/jinx is very similar to Sera/jinx Gwen can see people for what they really are not the masks they put on she help jinx with her emotions and she can also offer an escape, Because she travels so much she can take jinx to many places meet other people with similar problems like her's and sometimes just help her forget (even if just for a second) all the bad things that she's seen and done.
Now the others
(Shining star) Lux/Cait I like to think they know eachother not really well they talked on some party's but since they hate who they really are for the public image. But one day them and Jinx meet and Jinx just brings out the real them they see how beautiful the other is when honest and it helps being more honest with both themselves and others so they bond over that they can help eachother be more open show their true selves without fear because why care what people think when you have your loves
(laze show) Sera/Lux work really well even with the "lux is crazier" tag Sera did fall for jinx at this point it's a plus. Sera can help lux with all her bottled up emotions and her fear of her own magic while lux can help with Sera's so she has better control and it all can be a bit more quiet. Also their characters would just fit they would definitely lean on to earth other.
(sharp song) Sera/Cait is a interesting one because Cait is Sera's fan and would be freaking out at first but as they would get to know eachother she would be less fangirlie and as she was being more herself around her I think Sera would start to admire and maybe slowly fall in love with Cait's passion and drive to achieve her goals. And Cait loves Sera's determination, how she cares so much and how she knows to make a visible change between the people of Piltover and Zaun
Gwen was the hardest to tie to all of them and honestly only had a good one for Lux. I mostly worked of of voice lines and Gwen is kinda a bad bitch
(hollow note) Gwen/Sera "A stage, a voice, is that really all you are?" "A pretty voice, Seraphine. What a shame that's all you were." I will just ignored the second voice line cuz as I said Gwen really sees people for who they are so she knows that there is more to her then just her perfect idol
(golden thread) Gwen/lux just like with jinx Gwen sees lux's pain, fear and the way she hides who she really is. Gwen want's her to understand her pain and work on it instead of hiding it "You seem happy, Lux, but you know pain too. Why deny it?" "No running from pain, Lux. Next time, shine through it."
(royal blues) Gwen/Cait this is just an idea but maybe Gwen could help Cait not to break her back working, and that she should enjoy her life because there are wonderful things in it and she's missing that because her overwork (this is a suggestion from people on a discord server and I just loved it too much)
So that all was honestly expecting it to be longer XD stay healthy drink some water and have a good night or a nice day
Also I need ship names for the rest of them
I ALMOST GOT A SKIN LINE WITH ALL OF THEM I'M CRYING

Once the demo loaded for me, I only had about an hour and a half to play before I had to quit and go to bed, and I spent most of that time on the piano minigame.
Some thoughts:
Cloud is such a baby omg. Part of it is the obvious Zack dialogue blatantly coming from his mouth, of course. Loved the obvious swap where Secret-Cloud-Grunt (Ramirez, if you will) was clearly assigned the lines Zack said to Cloud. Cloud’s brain what are you doing.
Sephiroth will take some time to master, especially as I barely remember the controls. He looks like an idiot when I am controlling him, lol. Perfect acting on him and everyone really so far, A+.
I am going to miss so many climbable surfaces
the mountains are so spiky
NIBELHEIM PORK SANDWICH. Well there’s my themed meal! (May not actually do, but come on they threw that out for me a couple weeks in advance??)
I am gonna master every song on that piano dammit. I got very close to star rank tonight, only 2 Goods and the rest Great!
Pretty sure that on my first play through, I am going to do as much as possible and whatever feels right with regards to the affection system. I can’t not rifle through Tifa’s room, for one thing, and I’m never gonna say no to a side quest. Aerith or Tifa would be preferred for the date on my first playthrough, but if I wind up hanging with Cait Sith because I wanted to glean all available information on how he functions and whether Reeve is talking directly to me, so be it.
It’s possible I got some things right in my wild guessing since Remake—more likely character stuff than actual plot, I think—but honestly I am looking forward to being completely wrong about most things.
Also it warms my heart how much Cid and Vincent were in that trailer. Maybe Vincent won’t be spilling his major trauma immediately after we meet him?
Day 2:
Took me probably another hour to get star rank on the piano
Something about Obvious Zack Behavior is incredibly cute when it’s Cloud doing it
I feel like I may have missed a lot of crates and chests
The normal chit chat with Sephiroth and Cloud and Tifa? Omg
Trooper cloud saved Tifa’s life without her knowing!
Sephiroth saved Tifa’s life in the river and Zack saved Cloud’s life, poor nameless other guy but ❤️ Zack and boy must Tifa feel weird about that memory
I want to explore the whole Shinra mansion so badly, I found Vincent’s room and the tubes
I really like how rebirth made it a little clearer that Sephiroth snapped because Jenova started having influence on him once he reached her. Not that I’m trying to make her the villain and him the victim—pretty sure once he falls in the Lifestream, he’s running the show with all his own villainy going, Jenova’s basically The Thing—I just like that the flashes compared to flashes Cloud has had show her influence on him. I like that they didn’t go too hard in making him Evil; you can still see the underlying tragedy.
(I mean, we all know Hojo is the real villain and I think even Sephiroth would agree on that)
Also on multiple occasions I asked Sephiroth why he was so pretty
I REALLY like how those who are in the know about cloud and Zack can easily read between the lines and see what Actual Cloud did—not only showing us Random Trooper on the ground saying “Mo…” but also showing that Cloud’s memories match.
the struggle of having cloud drag himself along the ground while Sephiroth murdered people was AMAZING.
How dare they stop right there before the flashback is over. I know the point is to be tantalizing and they probably changed a thing or two but. Come onnnnnnn let Cloud deliver the cliffhanger.
(Oh, I did look at Tifa’s dresser but then said it was a joke, did not impress anybody lol. Should’ve stayed away!)
(I would like a screenshot of Cloud saying “hey Sephiroth, whatcha got there?” Sephiroth: A KNIFE

What Is: Cait, Curie, and Piper's Talent - Fallout 4 | Headcanon
Tumblr media
SUMMARY: What is Cait, Curie, and Piper's Talent?
WARNINGS: Cait being flirty, Curie being smart, Piper being done with you, all around a fluffy post.
WORD COUNT: 1065
Tumblr media Tumblr media
CAIT
Singing. There were times where you and her would have to hole up inside an abandoned cabin, or some sort of desolate building the both of you stumbled across. There was one night in particular where it was raining heavily outside, crashing thunder and sky-brightening lightning that would strike across the sky in jagged lines. Whether or not you found the intense weather comforting, it gave Cait the chance to hum and softly sing random songs she overheard from her time inside the Combat Zone. It was typically when she thought no one could hear, that was when she would usually serenade what she thought was just herself and the quiet room she was lingering inside.
However, no. You could hear her loud and clear, even under the rumbling explosions happening in the distance. It surprised you how soft and gentle her voice sounded when she was in a state of melody. Subtle in vibrato and silky smooth, you were grinning warmly by the time she was done singing the short song that came to her mind. And when you stepped in and lowered yourself to sit beside her on the old, worn down couch, she visibly jumped and looked over at you as if she saw a ghost, before inevitably relaxing and sinking in on herself. She looked forward in contemplative thought for a few seconds, until she eventually glanced back at you, but didn’t seem to meet your eyes, pupils staring past you in a way that showed embarrassment. Though, she wasn’t about to directly admit that.
“Don’t start teasin’ me now,” she grumbled as her eyebrows moved down into a deep furrow. As much as you wanted to laugh and make it known how funny you thought it was that she was getting all shy about something she shouldn’t have been shy about in the first place, all you did in response was smile gently and lean back into the couches’ cushion while your hands interwove together to rest between your legs.
“I’m not gonna tease you, I wouldn’t dream of it. You sounded nice.” The miniscule amount of light that illuminated the building allowed you to see the clear change in her expression after you said that. You knew she wasn’t used to verbal or even physical affection, considering all the time she spent being neglected, so you tried to ease into it as slow as possible. Although, you couldn’t stop yourself from complimenting her. “You should sing more. Your voice is pretty.”
“Now yer just being a kiss up,” she muttered, finally taking the chance to turn her head your way, her green irises meeting your gaze fully. You simply shrugged your shoulders at her in response, and she sent a quiet, amused scoff in your direction as a small smirk came to her lips. “You definitely know yer way with words, treasure.” You blushed at the term of endearment, and your heart fluttered when her palm slowly rested above your knee, making you quickly grab it with your own hand in return.
Tumblr media
CURIE
Knitting. Considering she’s a medic, someone who’s skilled and probably excels in sewing up a large wound, it wasn’t a surprise to you when you saw her lounging in one of the Castles’ rooms with a pair of those thick needles in her hands, and a slowly growing knitted cloth hanging off the edges of them. She looked like she was in her element, lounging back in a comfortable chair and enjoying herself with the ghost of a smile lingering on her cheeks as quiet, almost completely silent hums escaped her lips every now and then. You always saw her working on something, and you wondered if it was good for her to be doing so, and seeing her using her fingers for something other than work made you happy that she wasn’t overexerting herself, even if she was a synth and lacked that possibility.
Anytime you saw her in her state of comfort, completely focused, you’d quietly come into the room and linger near her. You didn’t want to bother her when she was distracted, but you’d still get a simple greeting from her, anyways. Whenever you’d do that, she’d find herself trying to get into conversation with you, and surprisingly she’d be just as swift with knitting while giving different facts and statements that had to do with the hobby she seemed to be very skilled at doing.
“Mon amour? Did you know ze knitting machine was invented in 1589?”
You looked at Curie as you laid down on the bed closest to where she was sitting alone. You were on your side, watching the woman intently, and you smiled upon hearing the simple fact. “I did not know that. What don’t you know, Curie?” you asked fondly, which caused the synth to chuckle and set her knitting needles and wool creation onto her lap.
“I did not know zat my hands would cramp up so easily,” she admitted, looking down thoughtfully, before raising her attention back to you. “You humans are very complex, no?”
You giggled softly, “Aren’t synths technically human, too?”
She paused and furrowed her eyebrows. “Well, I… I do not know ze answer to zat…”
Tumblr media
PIPER
Braiding/Simple hairstyling. Growing up as the older sister of Nat, you weren’t necessarily surprised when you found out that Piper was pretty skilled at braiding hair, or simply just styling it in a way that made it look presentable. You’d often find her personally adjusting her younger siblings’ hair, rather than the local barber in Diamond City. It got to a point where you even wanted her to try messing with your hair. Whether it was cutting it short, braiding it, combing it to look a certain way, the journalist was more than happy to stylize your locks.
You’d often find yourself falling asleep whenever Piper would work on your hair. Combing her fingers through the strands and scratching your scalp lightly as she worked it back to look a certain way, she couldn’t lie and say that she didn’t find it cute when seeing you fight to stay awake. Messing with your hair would sometimes end with her having to stop and take you to bed because of how much your head would fall back into her stomach as she stood behind you.
“Blue? Blue, you awake?”
“...”
“Dammit, Y/n. Not again…”

Cloud mentions "the materia song" at the end of the Loveless section in Yuffie's date right after she says she'll be the "leading lady" and before she says "Just you wait!".
This song may already exist. It may be the one Yuffie sings at Gongaga if you choose the choice she likes the most ("funny" option). The song at the end is about "waiting" too. The last two lines of the song struck me a little since "waiting" is in both the FF6 Opera and Loveless and of course, "dream".
I'll search high and low... Till I've gathered 'em all. I'll have orbs piled up... 'Bout a billion feet tall. I'll have so much materia... I won't know what to do. But until I can make you mine... I'll just patiently wait, and dream of you.
Think about how the last two lines could have been ANYTHING other than what they ended up being.
I have seen the six Gold Saucer date choices. The most interesting ones to decipher are Yuffie, Barret, and Red XIII. Aerith's date feels very OG-like (her message is the same) and Tifa's is very straight-forward, but they show their differing personalities quite well when comparing all 3 girls. The last one with Cait is obviously a joke.
Barret's date seems to hint about that "losing what you cherish the most" bit with Cait Sith's fortune.
Red XIII's is about fate and how the arbiters lead to memory loss...and also simply "protect Aerith".
Aerith is about "love", which is Terra's "thing". Think of her words as if Terra's saying them.
Tifa is about "hero" and "saving", as the Promise is about those things. She has Terra's personality, so it's more about the actions than the words.
Yuffie's date though should just be called "Practicing for FF7R Part 3"...what is she practicing for anyway? Let me just say, she did not disappoint me. Everyone should take this one seriously (like they will)...it's actually the longest one (even before ignoring Aerith & Tifa's shared Zack flashback scene).
I'll be waiting a bit to say more since this game is huge and people are going to be in danger of being spoiled for a while.
On a lighter note...

I don't think you can fight any other party members in the 3d Brawler (other than Cait's moogle). It raises her affection score, which is kinda important since she's the hardest to raise above the others (joining late and all). The Cait-Cid-Vincent one happens if all characters have equal affection scores.
Unfortunately for me, every character in this game may have something interesting to mention, so I'll like to simmer first before mentioning anything. I'll begin by focusing on Yuffie first followed by the other two.
On a sidenote, Yuffie's date (1st visit) is the only one other than Cloud going alone (Barret/Red XIII 1st visit) where he mentions Jessie's pizza ("Still waiting on that pizza."). It is what it is I guess.

Fallout 4 romance/crushing companions react to short sole asking a slow dance? Fluffy overload
Thank you!
This request is so cute!! Almost makes me want to download the slow dance mod again…
MacCready:
“No, I don’t dance.” At first he is determined not to get out of his chair despite Sole’s grabby hands. However, he takes one teeny glimpse at their begging eyes and he groans out in defeat. “Fine… but you’ll have to lead. I don’t really know what I’m doing. Anything to make you happy, I guess.”
Hancock:
“Sunshine, did you even have to ask?” He gleams as he takes their hand and twirls them around until their back hits his chest. While it’s not the traditional slow dancing, he much prefers this slower intimate version where he can lean into the crook of Sole’s neck and whisper dirty-nothings in their ear to make them laugh.
Cait:
“I don’t understand jus’ what ‘ye do to me. Of course I’ll dance with ‘ye, lover.” With a roll of her eyes, she hesitantly moves towards Sole. She expects them to lead it the full way, but she is more than happy to oblige and learn this gentler approach at intimacy.
Piper:
“You’re such a romantic, Blue.” She quickly goes hand-in-hand with Sole and sways along to the beat of the slow music. While she enjoys teasing her lover for their softer ways, there is nothing else she enjoys more than taking them up on sweet moments like these.
Nick:
“How could I refuse someone as beautiful as you, doll?” He may be creaking, but truthfully he adores being able to make Sole swoon when performing sweet gestures as simple as dancing with them.
Preston:
“You like this song too? I’ll admit, I’ve always pictured us dancing to this.” He is ecstatic to slow dance with Sole, having it always been a sweet fantasy of his since conjoining their love. It’s among many of the little things he wishes to do with his partner and is very glad to fulfill the list.
Danse:
“I- I suppose, since we have time, there’s no harm in it.” He’s very hesitant to take Sole’s hands and join them in slow dancing. Though as his lover creeps closer to him, he feels confident enough to rest his hands on their waist and sway along with the music.
Maxson:
He doesn’t utter a word as his facial expressions do most of the talking for him. His face flushes a deep red, his thick brows furrow slightly, and the corners of his lips creep into a very distinct smile as he nods. Maxson enjoys the silence and intimacy of slow dancing with his lover, just taking in their time and expression his passion for them.
Curie:
“How delightful! Although, I must ask you to guide me, madame/monsieur. I still have not the function of dancing with these legs.” She giddily takes Sole’s hands and allows them to guide her. If it were possible for her little heart to carry anymore love for Sole, in that moment, she would reach full capacity.
Deacon:
“Alright, but am I dipping you or are you dipping me?” He dips Sole. Plain and simple, while he’s a jokester at heart, this shared intimate moment with his lover ceases all of that and allows him to show them his true affection and appreciation.
Desdemona:
“Slow dancing, hm? You’re such a romantic.” She teases in good nature and agrees to take Sole’s hands and dance along to the tune with them. It’s very rare moments like these where she can allow herself to let her guard down and focus solely on her lover.
Glory:
“I’m not the best dancer, but I can try.” She is so willing to go along with Sole and slow dance, however she can’t really say that she is too into it. She would much rather take her lover by their hands and spin them around, jumping to some chaotic tunes, but if the soft melody makes them happy then she won’t be one to complain aloud.
Tinker Tom:
“Can’t say I have ever slow danced before… will you show me how?” At Sole’s request, his interests are piqued. With their guidance, he is so willing to learn and enjoys their patience and closeness to him more than anything.
Magnolia:
“I just swear my heart belongs to you, Lover.” She has been waiting for the day someone asks her to slow dance, but not just any old someone. If she hasn’t already devoted her love to Sole, this will certainly cause her to do so, enjoying being so close to someone she adores more than anything, and on top of it all, they stay attentive to her interests and that shows her how much they truly care for her.
Sturges:
“I think I fall in love with you more and more everyday, darlin’.” His smile can’t grow any bigger as he stands and makes his way over to Sole. He allows them to decide whether they’re leading or not, and puts his hands in their designated place depending on their custom. While dancing with them, he will occasionally hum the lyrics of the song and continuously smile at his lover.
X6-88:
“As you wish, ma’am/sir.” He swiftly takes Sole by their waist as copies their motions as he quickly picks up on dancing. It had not been a skill honed to him before, but he admires Sole enough to mimic their movements for their own enjoyment.
Gage:
“I ain’t really made for dancing, but I suppose I’ll give a try for you.” He can’t really say that he enjoys the slowness of their movements, but he is enthralled with being so close and personal with Sole, seeing their much softer side that no one else could see except for him. For that reason alone, he is willing to slow dance with them more often.
Mason:
“We’re raiders, we don’t dance.” He spats out coldly and avoids Sole’s gaze. If he happens to catch a glimpse of their expression, he immediately gives in with a heavy sigh. “Okay, I guess since you are the boss and all. I have no other choice.” He enjoys it more than he will ever admit, loving being so close to Sole without any of his animalistic tendencies barking out and disturbing the peace.
Mags Black:
“Of course, this melody is just too beautiful to pass up on such a request from you.” She smirks as she takes the lead. Occasionally she will lean in and kiss her lover, doing her best to make them appear flustered during their sweet exchange.
Nisha:
“Absolutely not.” She refuses and will even stick her nose up at the thought. Though with Sole’s persistence, this raider can be ‘forced’ to give in, Sole is the boss after all. “Have it your way, but I will not be enjoying this.” Definitely a lie.
William Black:
“I didn’t peg you for the dancing type. Can’t say I’m disappointed.” He immediately takes Sole’s hands in his clasp as he joins them, pressing his chest against theirs and leaning in so his forehead rests against theirs as well. He closes his eyes as the two sway to the rhythm and pretends for a few moments of his life that things were different with his lover.

Interrupted by Fireworks: the illusion over darker realities
Players love the dates for many reasons: it’s the culmination of their hard work with the affection mechanic, a silly interlude after hours of tension, an opportunity to bond with their character of choice. A sweet moment in time isolated from the heavier themes of the game.
But what if I told you that Tifa and Aerith’s dates are not just cute little flashes of fan service? That both dates are part of a broader arc highlighting how the girls recognize, confront, and decide to react to the reality of Cloud’s mental issues?
And what if I told you that “Interrupted by Fireworks” is not just the pretty Big Date song? That “Interrupted by Fireworks” serves as an important tool in threading this arc together and setting our romantic expectations stupidly high so they can be cruelly subverted later?
Tumblr media
Well wonder no more, as that’s what we’ll be discussing today! Cut for an image-heavy, script-heavy post.
Recognition: At the Ghost Hotel
By the second Gold Saucer visit, both girls have serious concerns regarding Cloud. This is made obvious during the conversation at the Ghost Hotel.
Tumblr media
On Aerith’s part, she is about to speak up about her misgivings when she uncharacteristically catches herself:
Aerith: ...You know... I think Hojo did something to those men in the Black Capes. But I don't know what it has to do with Sephiroth though... That's why I think we should just go after Sephiroth himself.
Barret: Yeah, me too! It's all just too damn confusin'.
Aerith: (she puts her hands behind her back and looks down) And... (she puts her hand in front of her mouth in a gesture of stopping herself) I'm sorry, forget it! I think I'm tired. I'm going to bed now. (she runs upstairs)
Cait Sith: What was that, all of a sudden!?
(Watch here)
The devs themselves want us to notice her secrecy--so they use the game itself (via Cait Sith) to call it out.
Tumblr media
On Tifa’s part, her hidden fears about Cloud’s mental state erupt when Red XIII puts her thoughts into words:
Red XIII: Cloud... I'm number 13. Am I going to go mad too?
Tifa: (she walks towards Red XIII and bends close to him) I don't know what Hojo did to you, but you've been all right so far, right?
Red XIII: But...
Tifa: Be strong.
Red XIII: But, I...
Tifa: (she straightens back up and puts her hands on her hips) Stop it, Red XIII! Be strong!
Cloud: Tifa?
Tifa: (she stretches her arms behind her and leans into a shout) You're not the only one who's worried!
(Watch here)
(And yes, this moment is confirmed to be about Cloud per the Ultimania Omega: “Tifa interrupts Red XIII with unexpected roughness when he expresses his fear that he might go mad like the black cloaks they’ve seen in various places. This is because Tifa herself is afraid of the change that’s come over Cloud.” (Source))
The story’s the same here--the game itself (via Cloud) specifically remarks upon her unusual behavior, because yet again, the devs want to draw our attention to this noteworthy moment.
- 🎆 -
So why do the devs want to highlight these details? From a meta perspective, the devs want to pique our curiosity in order to give us the satisfaction of resolving it later... But from an in-game perspective, it’s because the strange behavior explains why the girls ask Cloud out on a date. After their discomfiting realizations at the Ghost Hotel, Tifa and Aerith cannot lay their worries to rest... so the girls use the pretense of a date to talk to Cloud about their suspicions. (Yes--I’m saying that plot-related reasons, not romantic ones, were their primary motivation for asking Cloud out.)
Acknowledgment: On the Gondola
For both girls, the gondola presents the perfect opportunity to talk to Cloud.
Tumblr media
On Aerith's date, she reveals the following cryptic plot hints:
Aerith: ...first off, it bothered me how you looked exactly alike. Two completely different people, but look exactly the same. The way you walk, gesture... I think I must have seen him again, in you... But you're different. Things are different.
Aerith: Cloud... I'm searching for you.
Cloud: ...?
Aerith: I want to meet you.
Cloud: But I'm right here.
Aerith: (I know, I know...what I mean is...) I want to meet... you.
(Watch here)
Yes, it looks superficially like any standard date scene in any garden-variety JRPG. But many fans have already pointed out the underlying meaning of this dialogue: Aerith can sense that there’s something deeply wrong with Cloud. His true nature, whatever it is, is locked away... but for some reason, she can’t tell him directly. On the gondola, she tries to express that she's aware of Cloud’s issues, perhaps with the goal of trying to draw out his true self, if all it needs to reveal itself is simple acknowledgment. (Cloud, unfortunately, cannot comply.)
Tumblr media
On Tifa's date, she even more cryptically alludes to her role in the plot:
Tifa: Ok, I'm going to just go ahead and say it...
Cloud: ...what?
Tifa: Aeris would be able to just come out and say it, probably. Cloud... Sometimes being old friends is hard. I mean, timing is everything.
Cloud: Yeah...
Tifa: Cloud...? I......
Tifa: ......................
(Watch here)
Yes, yes, this script also looks like a love confession scene from a particularly unoriginal anime. But much like everything else Tifa says and does pre-Lifestream, looks can be deceiving. Her earlier outburst provides the necessary context: she’s trying to overcome her own hesitations to address Cloud’s inconsistencies and possible madness. She may even hope to determine the truth of the situation, if she can start a conversation that Cloud won’t shy away from. (Tifa, unfortunately, hesitates for too long.)
- 🎆 -
Yet it is easy to overlook these hidden depths, as the dreaminess of these scenes presents us with a welcome distraction. Much like Cloud, we want to ignore the heavier implications. The magical atmosphere helps us focus on the romantic denotations, and “Interrupted by Fireworks” is permanently imprinted on our minds as the song for The Big Romantic Moment.
Personally, I find it fitting that both these conversations with their heavy double meanings occur at the Gold Saucer. Our glittering surroundings set the mood, and we allow ourselves to focus on the superficial beauty and simpler clichéd storytelling. But much like the tawdry gaudiness of the Gold Saucer itself, these conversations conceal darker anxieties about grim realities that we can't ignore forever.
Forgetfulness: The Prediction and the Discovery
This association primes us to recall the dates the next time we hear “Interrupted by Fireworks.” On each of the occasions where we hear the track outside of the Gold Saucer, the scenes call back to the unresolved ideas from each girl’s respective date.
Tumblr media
For Aerith, at the Temple of the Ancients, “Interrupted by Fireworks” plays when Cait Sith predicts great compatibility between Aerith and Cloud. It feels like a triumphant moment: in spite of Aerith’s concerns over Cloud’s condition and her failure to draw out the truth the last time this song played, at least they’re still hitting romantic beats--Cait Sith even says that they’re perfect together. Cloud’s weird whatever-it-is can be swept under the rug. With this prediction and Cait Sith’s sacrifice for the Black Materia, we can assume that Cloud and Aerith have an easy road to love and happiness, that the team’s victory is assured. It doesn’t matter that something is wrong and unresolved with Cloud... right...?
Tumblr media
For Tifa, at Mideel, “Interrupted by Fireworks” plays when she finally discovers that Cloud is not only alive but also nearby. This also feels like a triumphant moment: even though Tifa’s hesitation prevented her from talking to Cloud and drawing out the truth the last time this song played, at least she’ll finally get the opportunity to reunite with Cloud and express the feelings she's locked away for so long. We assume that Cloud and Tifa will finally be honest with each other--that the power of love and honesty will resolve everything in just a few minutes, allowing Cloud to rejoin the team and lead us on to victory... right...?
- 🎆 -
In these magical, larger-than-life moments, we remember how enchanted we were the last time we heard “Interrupted by Fireworks,” and we allow ourselves to be lulled into complacency. The details in these scenes fit so neatly into typical storytelling conventions; it's just so very easy to predict what happens next. But the devs are counting on our familiarity with story clichés so they can subvert our expectations and break our hearts.
Confrontation: The Attack and the Loss
Intoxicated by The Big Romantic Moment, we walk straight into an emotional ambush.
Tumblr media
For Aerith, literally three minutes after her compatibility with Cloud is confirmed and Cait Sith bounces off to save the day, disaster strikes. Cloud’s unresolved issues result in him giving Sephiroth the Black Materia and violently attacking her, heedless of her entreaties. In one fell swoop, we are shown that Cloud’s issues are unpredictable and dangerous--that while they exist, we can’t just save the world, and Cloud and Aerith can’t just have a happy ending. While Sephiroth is a real and direct threat to Aerith, so too is Cloud’s condition and it cannot be ignored.
Tumblr media
For Tifa, literally two minutes after she learns Cloud isn’t dead and she still has a chance to talk to him, her hopes are dashed. While he may be alive, Cloud is incapable of hearing Tifa’s truth and incapable of rejoining the team. What power do love and honesty have if the person who needs it most can't even perceive them? Tifa is too late--Cloud’s mental state is too broken to be fixed. At this point, it seems that Cloud’s issues will always exist, Cloud and Tifa will never truly reunite, and we will never beat the bad guy.
- 🎆 -
What’s so striking about both these scenes is that the root of the drama is ultimately Cloud’s issues. Cloud can’t ignore, hide from, or otherwise remain passive in the face of them... for as long as Cloud fails to resolve his internal conflict, he will never become the best version of himself. He will never have the strength to save the day and never have the power to find happiness.
Resolution: Decisions in the Aftermath
So if we’ve been following the girls’ struggles and parallels with Cloud’s condition all this time, we now need to ask... how do they choose to respond? How do these arcs conclude?
Tumblr media
On Aerith’s part, she realizes that her responsibility as an Ancient is simply too great. She cannot choose Cloud’s well-being over the future of the Planet.
Aerith: Cloud, can you hear me?
Cloud: Yeah, I hear you. Sorry for what happened.
Aerith: Don't worry about it.
Cloud: ...I can't help it...
Aerith: Oh... Then, why don't you REALLY worry about it? And let me handle Sephiroth. (she laughs) And Cloud, you take care of yourself. So you don't have a breakdown, okay?
Cloud: What is this place?
Aerith: This forest leads to the City of the Ancients... and is called the Sleeping Forest. It's only a matter of time before Sephiroth uses Meteor. That's why I'm going to protect it. Only a survivor of the Cetra, like me, can do it.
(Watch here)
After the Temple of the Ancients, Aerith realizes that Cloud has to work through his issues. (“Then, why don’t you REALLY worry about it?”) But as the last survivor of the Cetra, Aerith has neither the time nor the knowledge to help him do so--and she cannot prioritize the mental state of a dangerous man over the well-being of the rest of the world. (“That's why I'm going to protect it. Only a survivor of the Cetra, like me, can do it.”) So when it comes to helping Cloud, Aerith makes the only decision she can: she can't. All she can do is hope that her chosen path will incidentally assist him in some way. Hope that clearing off his plate will give him the opportunity he needs to take it easy and at least prevent himself from getting any worse. (“Let me handle Sephiroth... you take care of yourself. So you don’t have a breakdown, okay?”)
Tumblr media
Ultimately, Aerith has to choose the Planet over Cloud. And so she does. The scene of Aerith running away has its own double meaning: for Cloud and the player, Aerith is leaving us behind and running into an unknown, perilous future; but for Aerith, she is necessarily parting with Cloud. She must keep moving forward to fulfill her own duties, even if it means that Cloud--imperfect, broken, a threat to her safety and a danger to her mission--must be left behind. She cannot sacrifice everything, including herself, for Cloud’s sake.
Tumblr media
On the flipside, Tifa realizes that while she is just one interchangeable body in the fight for the Planet, she isn’t when it comes to the fight for Cloud.
Doctor: Poor fellow, he can’t even speak. He is literally miles away from us. Some place far away where no one's ever been... All alone...
...
Tifa: Why...? What do you want me to do? Please, Cloud... Talk to me... Tell me you see me, that you can hear me... Tell me, please... I came this far believing in the memories we have together... This isn't happening...! This is too cruel... Oh, Cloud...! I....
...
Doctor: But remember, the light of hope can be found anywhere. If you give up hope... What will happen to him?
...
Barret: ...hope... Hey, but honestly, man... Do I really want him to come back? What did he do for the world? What can he do for us from here on out? He may be nothing more than Sephiroth's shadow...
...
Tifa: I don't care about anything else, only Cloud... I... want to be by his side...
...
Barret: Oh, and uh, Tifa... I don't like askin' this but...... Is he really your childhood friend? And not Sephiroth's shadow?
Tifa: Huh!? Well... that is... No, I'm sure of it!
(Watch here)
The doctor states that Cloud is “all alone,” and that if no one believes in or hopes for Cloud, then how will Cloud ever recover? (“If you give up hope... what will happen to him?”) But after Cloud’s catastrophic actions at the Northern Crater, how can anyone believe in Cloud? Even Barret, the person who knew Cloud the longest after Tifa, can’t bring himself to hope for Cloud or believe in him. (“...hope... [...] He may be nothing more than Sephiroth’s shadow.”) This means that Tifa, unique in her knowledge of Cloud’s past (“the memories we have together”) and her choice to believe in him ("No, I'm sure of it!"), is utterly irreplaceable to this defeated Cloud. Not only is she the only one who can unlock his memories, but she is the only one who cares for him without reservation.
Tumblr media
Ultimately, Tifa chooses Cloud over the Planet. Tifa states, “I... want to be by his side.” This is a huge moment for Tifa--the first time she demonstrates that she finally has the resolve to express and act on her true feelings regarding Cloud. She is willing to sacrifice everything--her own revenge, her own comfort--for Cloud’s sake. And so she does, selflessly, in a thankless, inglorious position.
- 🎆 -
Until this moment, both girls had significant parallels with one another. They both recognized that something was wrong with Cloud. They both asked him out as a pretense, and they both tried to discuss Cloud’s issues with him. They both had big, romantic hopes which were destroyed by the reality of Cloud’s mental state. But the parallels end there.
Tumblr media
Aerith: Then, I’ll be going now. I’ll come back when it’s all over.
...
Tifa: I... want to be by his side...
Both Aerith and Tifa have different abilities, thus different roles and different priorities. Aerith and Tifa have to make radically different decisions when the time comes to deal with Cloud’s issues. Aerith cannot, should not, and does not; Tifa can, should, and does.
Final thoughts:
So what about Yuffie and Barret? “Interrupted by Fireworks” only plays five times in the entire game: (1) your date with Aerith, (2) your date with Tifa, (3) at the Temple of Ancients, (4) at Mideel, and... (5) on your date with Yuffie.  Barret’s date gets his theme, sadly. Neither of them have follow ups with the theme. Neither Yuffie nor Barret allude to plot elements at the Ghost Hotel, and both Yuffie’s and Barret’s dates are played off as comedy. I think their dates are safely not plot-significant.
Gondola observation, part 1: both Aerith and Tifa look away from Cloud before the camera cuts to the view of the Gold Saucer (and the moments when they are most emotionally vulnerable).
Gondola observation, part 2: Tifa says Aerith would just “come out and say it,” and she’s kinda right. Aerith is much more forthright, but still can’t be direct, as she too senses that being too open will break Cloud. Still, I love how the girls know each other so well.
Cloud’s replies to Aerith after the Gondola: After the gondola ride, Aerith asks, “Don’t you like being with me?” Cloud can reply with either “No, I don’t” or “That’s not it.” I actually wonder if both these responses are subtly related to his issues. “I don’t like being with you” being a result of his Sephiroth copy status and future animosity towards her; “that’s not it” being a result of his discomfort with her knowledge of his issues.
Cloud’s response to Tifa after the Gondola: After the ride, Cloud asks, “What did you want to say a minute ago...?” Seems Cloud didn’t realize what Tifa was trying to get at his clone issues or he wouldn’t be so curious. Which makes sense at this point of the game: he still thinks Tifa completely believes he’s Cloud the cool SOLDIER from Nibelheim.
This post is the result of my recent meta on Tifa’s half of this story. Special thanks to @terra-fatalis who talked this idea through with me!

How about the companions reacting to a dainty looking sole accidentally dropping something beneath a car and before they can offer to help her, she just casually lifts it with one hand, gets whatever she dropped and just drops the car back on the ground afterwards like it was nothing, despite the fact that it cracks the ground when it lands. I honestly just think the look on their faces when I imagine it is hilarious so I'm curious to see what you can come up with
Oh, my gosh, that is awesome! 😂😂😂 Gosh, I really wish that there was some way to animate some of these suggestions that y'all come up with 😂 Their faces in this one would be hilarious 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you so much for the request!!! I hope you enjoy! 💙💛
Cait - "Wait, wait, wait! You aren't going to just pick up an entire junk car and act like you've been doing it yer whole life without givin' me some sort of explanation!!!"
Piper - "Wow, Blue... I guess dynamite does come in small packages, doesn't it?"
Curie - "My goodness, Madame! Are you sure you were not affected by radioactive substances? That sort of strength is not characteristic of unmutated genes!"
MacCready - "OH, MY--- HOW DID YOU--- WHAT THE---"
Deacon - "Ho-kay.... That was certainly unexpected.... On a related note, did they write that song 'Atom Bomb Baby' about you? Y'know... The whole line about 'atom bomb baby, loaded with power?'"
Codsworth - "You must've eaten your share of sugar bombs this morning, eh, Mum? A good breakfast can really get you ready to take on anything in the day! Ha, ha!"
Hancock - "Good grief! You been slipping buffout or something in your meals?! Maybe I need to try a little more of it myself..."
Danse - "Umm.... I assume that this is a recent development? Or have you been harboring supernatural abilities this entire time and selected not to share this information?"
Preston - "Wow!!!! I guess you're just full of surprises, General...."
Valentine - "Huh... It's always the small ones that surprise you..."
X6-88 - "How did you do that? You are much too small to have even lifted the vehicle an inch from the ground. I cannot even fathom how you lifted it several feet up..."
Dogmeat - Honestly is not surprised. After all, his human is super, and maybe now he can show her that toy that he had gotten stuck underneath a vehicle at the Red Rocket near Sanctuary and she could help him get it back.
Strong - "........ Tiny human strong as super-mutant....... HOWWW?!!!!!!"

You Say I Am Loved - C. Makar
Tumblr media
Summary: 4 times Cale Makar comforted Katerina Stewart and 1 time Katerina Stewart comforted him.
Word Count: 5.7k
Warnings: hurt/comfort, anxiety, fluff, established relationship
A/N: thanks @antoineroussel for asking me to fill in as a pinch-hitter for the summer fic exchange! This story was written for @blueskrugs – I hope you enjoy this Cait! I haven’t written for Cale before so this was a great challenge for me (and I really enjoyed the hurt/comfort element!).
Also, big thanks to @tippedbykreider and @danglesnipecelly for their encouragement - you guys are the mvps 💖 inspired by the song You Say by Lauren Daigle.
*
Katerina Stewart didn’t believe in coincidences. Everything happened for a reason; every missed bus, every rainy day, every conversation with a stranger – they all meant something. By embracing the random chances in life, she knew that she’d never miss out on something she would later regret. Perhaps that was the art student in her, seeing the positive in a world that would love nothing more than to stomp out her hope, but she didn’t care. Kat saw the world from a glass half full perspective, and she wouldn’t change that for anything.
So she walked home instead of waiting for the next bus, seeing the world in real-time speed that would otherwise have sped by. She danced in the rain and smiled as it soaked her clothing to the bone, knowing her painting supplies were tucked away safely in her waterproof rucksack. And she spoke to every stranger who spoke to her – the little old lady in the grocery store, the newlywed couple in the dog park with the cutest Pomeranian…and Cale Makar in the coffee shop.
Cale Makar, with his shy smile and his earnest everything and his complete inability to speak to her the first three times he saw her, apparently.
That had been a shock, to say the least. Sure, she hadn’t approached him, but that was because she had recognised him from posters around the city, and she didn’t think it was actually her he was looking at. Kat prided herself on being an approachable friendly person (see: little old lady in the grocery store and the couple in the dog park), but even her warm smile and open nature hadn’t been enough to override Cale’s shyness. But it only took that one chance from Cale, that opening line of “they’re really rushed off their feet in here today, aren’t they?”, to start a conversation that just kept on rolling, leading to them sitting down at a vacant table together. By the end of the hour in the coffee shop, Kat had given him her number with strict instructions to actually message her.
And he had.
A couple of days went by with them messaging constantly, whenever they each had a spare moment (and sometimes even when the moment wasn’t spare, much to the delight of EJ and to Cale’s despair when the team caught him), until Cale had asked if she was free on Friday night. Without hesitating, Kat had said yes. Embrace all the random chances, right?
Along came Friday night and Kat was excited. Actually, that was an understatement. This guy, this incredibly sweet and seemingly genuine guy, made her feel giddy and gave her butterflies, and even just thinking about him put a smile on her face. Already he affected her like this, before their first date – and she couldn’t wait to see how the night went. And what was the date? Well, Cale has suggested they go to the local outdoor ice rink. It was December, all the pretty lights were out in preparation for Christmas, and it was an easy distance for them to get to – what wasn’t to like? She had wanted to tease him for playing to his strengths, but the hopeful tone in his voice when he’d called her to ask had stopped her – he really was so adorable. And besides, she had the cutest winter outfit with coordinating hat, gloves and scarf that would be perfect to wear (and the light blue colours made her dark hair pop), so why not just roll with it?
Welcome the unknown. And she’d never known any guy like Cale before.
Cale picked her up from her campus apartment, immediately complimenting her outfit (she knew it was a winner!), making her glad that she’d put so much effort into looking good. Looking good for him? No, looking good for herself. Not that Cale couldn’t appreciate it…
And by the sideways glances he kept giving her as they drove, he definitely did appreciate it.
It had been years since Kat had ice skated, but after Cale helped her choose the right skates and even helped her lace them up properly – the sight of him on his knees in front of her was one that wouldn’t leave her mind for a while – the two of them headed onto the ice. As expected, she was a little rusty. But there was no way she was going to give up this early. The air was crisp, the fairy lights were twinkling, and she had the cutest guy next to her – this was heaven.
“I can, um…would you like to hold onto my arm?” Cale offered.
It was the light blush on his cheeks that made her smile. “I’d like that,” she nodded.
Biting her bottom lip, she looped her hand through his extended arm, clutching at his bicep as they started to move again. Much easier. Cale smiled down at her as they slowly skated side by side, Kat holding onto Cale like a lifeline, making her smile back up at him. Never had things felt so easy with anyone else. Never.
“You’re an artist, right?” he asked, glancing down at her.
Kat clutched at his arm a little tighter, making sure she was as secure as she could be before she focused on talking to him. He deserved her full attention.
“An art student, yeah,” she nodded, swallowing a little heavier than she intended.
When people asked her what she did, saying ‘art student’ tended to go one of two ways. One option was that people seemed impressed at the creativity. But the other, the more common option, was that people frowned as if to say really?
She really hoped Cale wasn’t one of those people.
“You must be really talented to pursue a degree in it!” he said sweetly.
Oh wow. She felt her cheeks heating up, her olive skin doing nothing to hide the blush that flooded her cheeks. She hadn’t been expecting that.
“I do okay,” she eventually shrugged, cheeks still warm.
“Are you really going to be modest with me?” he teased.
Oh two could play at that game.
“How could I not be, when I’m next to the guy who was called up from college to play in the Stanley Cup playoffs?” she teased back.
Now it was Cale’s turn to blush. Hah. Good.
“I think I’d rather talk about you,” he said softly.
It was his gentle sincere eyes that made Kat’s breath hitch in her throat, her head nodding in agreement before she could stop herself.
“Um, sure. What do you want to know?” she asked, a little stunned.
For the rest of their 45-minute skating session, their conversation didn’t stop. Back and forth they talked and asked questions, learning more about each other that their texting hadn’t covered. To be honest, Kat was a little astounded when it came for them to leave the ice – time had flown by, without her even noticing. When was the last time conversation had been so effortless like this on a date? Or ever, with anyone?
But when she sat down to unlace her skates, she found that her fingers were too numb to untangle the knot. Okay so maybe her cute new gloves weren’t as warm as they could be.
“Everything okay?” Cale asked, frowning as he noticed her not moving.
“Uh, my hands are too cold to untie my skates?” she offered, wincing at how silly it sounded.
Cale’s frown slipped to an expression of alarm and he quickly knelt down in front of her (again, whew).
"Here, give me your hands,” he murmured.
Kat wordlessly did as he asked, gasping softly as he cupped her frozen fingers between his hands and blew against the useless wool. His breath filled the material covering her hands, warming her instantly, and she bit her bottom lip as he blew again. No-one had ever comforted her like this, ever. No-one had even offered. So for Cale to just do it instinctively on their first date? Wow.
“Hopefully that takes the edge off?” Cale said, looking up at her with wide eyes.
Kat wiggled her fingers, smiling at the lack-of-pain in the movement. “Much better, thank you,”
Cale just grinned – before reaching for her laces. She was too surprised to refuse, sitting still in shock as he carefully unlaced and loosened her boots, until he winked up at her when he finished. Oh that boy knew exactly what he was doing. How smooth.
Somehow, Kat didn’t find herself minding all that much.
“Last person with their shoes on buys the hot chocolate?” Cale suggested playfully.
Kat looked down at his skates, which were still tightly laced, before laughing. “Oh you’re on,”
Naturally Cale lost. And yet Kat was charmed, her hand having found its way to curl over his bicep once more, despite not needing the assistance at all. Cale didn’t seem to mind, funny enough, smiling shyly down at her after he ordered a hot chocolate for them both. Kat huffed out a laugh, her breath curling into mist in the cold air, but smiled back up at him, sweetly, effortlessly.
What an incredible date. What an incredible guy.
“I think this is the start of something beautiful,” Kat said softly.
The pink flush of Cale’s cheeks only made Kat smile wider. “I really hope so,”
*
Kat and Cale’s relationship only flourished from there. One date turned to two to three to ten to six months down the line in a relationship that was only going from strength to strength. He built her up and supported her just as much as she did to him, him attending as many art shows and exhibitions as he could while she went to every home game as well as some official Avs events as his girlfriend – it was a partnership of equals, something that Kat had only ever hoped for. And Cale was more than she could ever have dreamed.
For Cale, Kat was a breath of fresh air. Her positivity was so refreshing in a world that could be so stressful and bleak, and her go-with-the-flow nature helped him appreciate the smaller things in life. It was so easy to get caught up in his head sometimes, with the pressure he put himself under, as well as the pressure with hockey and the team in general, but Kat was always there with a sweet smile and warm words to bring him out of that fog.
She was always there, by his side, ready to cheer him on, just like he did with her. So when Kat didn’t answer his texts or calls for three days straight, Cale got worried fast. Both of them had been busy lately – Cale was out of the playoffs now, and Kat had been to all of his home games in this first round, even though it was coming to the end of her degree. He’d done his best to encourage her with her portfolio creation and selection on the days he’d been home, and he thought she’d appreciated it – so after the locker cleanout days and team admin things he needed to sort out, he’d given her some space (and taken some for himself, to be honest), always sending her texts to check in.
But he hadn’t received anything in return. And three days was more than long enough. So on the evening of that third day, he drove over to her campus apartment to see if she was there. He didn’t know what he’d do if she wasn’t there. It was all he could do to channel a bit of that positive hope she always tried to instill in him.
“Oh thank fuck,”
Cale blinked in surprise at the greeting from Kat’s flatmate Sarah, earning a wincing smile back. Oh thank fuck. Was that a good thing?
“Is Kat home?” he asked hopefully.
“Yeah, she’s in her room. Full on zombie mode. I don’t think I’ve seen her leave in literally three days,”
Three days. Shit.
“Has she eaten?” he frowned.
“Not that I can tell, sorry man. Feel free to come in, I need to grab some groceries anyway,” Sarah shrugged.
Zombie mode. Hasn’t left her room. Hasn’t eaten.
Where was the cheerful positive girl he’d come to know? Damn it, he should’ve come sooner, he shouldn’t have given her the ‘space’ he thought she’d want. Damn it. He didn’t even register the front door closing behind Sarah as he walked towards Kat’s room, knocking twice on the door before opening it.
“Cale?”
He looked at Kat and tried not to let his jaw drop in surprise. She was sitting at her desk, clear of sketchpads for once, but hunched over a laptop that he rarely saw her use, her legs pulled up tight to her chest. Her dark hair, usually so glossy (thanks to an expensive conditioner she tried to ration) and tumbling down her back was thrown up into a greasy bun. Her eyes were clearly straining at her laptop, her lips her chewed and chapped, and she looked exhausted. Sarah was right. This was full on zombie mode.
“Hey Kat. It’s been a few days,” he said, hesitating a little before perching on the end of her bed.
Kat winced, tongue darting out to wet her dry lips.
“Has it really?” she grimaced, “I guess I lost track of time,”
Cale stayed silent as she fished in the pocket of her (his) hoodie, locating her phone – which was dead. She winced again.
“Damn it,” she groaned.
Well at least that explained why she hadn’t responded.
“Are you okay?” he asked softly, reaching out a hand towards her.
Kat bit her bottom lip but took his hand anyway, uncurling her feet from her desk chair to sit down next to him on her bed instead. If it had really been three days…she could only guess what she looked like. And she would put money on none of the other Avs partners ever looking like this. Great. Great job Kat.
“I’ve been better. Just got this final assignment to finish, that’s all,” she shrugged.
One final essay, explaining the themes of her essay and why she chose all her pieces and just everything she hated about being in college. Essays!
Cale let out a breath of relief – was that all that the problem was?
Kat watched him let out a breath of relief and frowned – what did he have to be relieved about?
“I thought you weren’t talking to me for a bad reason,” he admitted.
It was all she could do not to let her jaw drop.
“You think this isn’t bad? You think this isn’t serious?” she said incredulously.
“I didn’t mean that, you know that. I just…I haven’t heard from you. I was really worried,” he said, trying to reassure her,
“This is it, Cale. It’s the final of everything I’ve worked on for the last four years,” Kat shot back, “I have to put all my focus on it,”
Cale just smiled, trying to diffuse her mild temper, and squeezed her shoulder. Her passion was one of the things he loved most about her – even when it translated to this intensity. She just loved so much, especially her art.
“You’ve already finished your portfolio – all of those incredible drawings and paintings, they’re all done. It’s just this one last thing,” he soothed.
“This last thing is a ridiculous essay and I am not a writer. I am an artist. My art speaks for itself,” she groaned.
“I know. You know. We all know. But you’ve just got to do this one last thing for the stuffy dinosaur administration who couldn’t understand art if a child explained it,”
She couldn’t help but laugh, her frustration melting away at his words.
“You have been listening to my wine rants,” Kat giggled, unable to keep her bad mood up.
He cares. He really cares.
“I always listen,” he mused, “Even when you and the other halves are slurring and stumbling as bad as Josty on rum,”
The cheek! Accurate, but still!
“Lies! Slander! I won’t stand for it!” she said dramatically.
Cale just laughed, rolling his eyes fondly (there was his girl), before leaning forward to press a kiss to the side of her head. Kat immediately frowned, pouting up at him until he laughed again, leaning down to kiss her lips this time, earning a soft happy sigh from his girlfriend.
“That’s better,” she said, smiling up at him once he’d pulled away.
Cale smiled back, but not as fully as he usually would. All he could focus on were the bags under Kat’s eyes, the tension in and around her eyes too, and he hated how pale and tired she looked. What he hated even more was that she wasn’t going to do anything about herself. So it was up to him.
“Time for a break,” he announced.
“What? No! I still have so much to do,” she insisted.
“Kat, sweetheart, when was the last time you ate a full meal? Or even slept more than just passing out at your desk for an hour?” Cale frowned.
She opened and closed her mouth, unable to give an answer that didn’t sound awful. Because the truth was that she didn’t know when she last did either of those. Her wince told Cale all he needed to know.
“This isn’t healthy for you. Going over the same thing, over and over again, it’s only going to mess with your head. And you need food and sleep to fuel your brain to write in the first place. How about we drive back to mine, I’ll make you a light dinner, and you can take a break while you eat it?”
“Cale, I don’t know…”
“I wasn’t finished,” he teased.
She huffed a laugh, nudging him with her knee, earning a nudge back.
“Why don’t we read it together when you’ve finished eating? That way you can get an outside perspective, and you can go through your line of thinking?”
Kat bit her bottom lip in hesitation. Cale…reading her essay? She wanted to shudder at the thought. Like she said, there was a reason she was an artist and not a writer. But he did have a point about the outside perspective. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad? He wouldn’t be rude about it after all…
“I just want to help you, Kat. That’s all,” he said softly, drawing her back out of her head.
“I know you do babe. And I appreciate it, I really do,” Kat said, smiling tiredly.
Cale stayed silent, raising an eyebrow, making Kat laugh softly. He always could read her so well. So, she nodded, admitting defeat.
“You can feed me. And read my essay,” she sighed.
Cale just grinned at her, darting forward for another quick kiss. “You won’t regret this, I promise,”
His earnest nature, as always, melted her heart just that little bit more.
“Embrace the chances, right? I trust you,” she said, huffing out a breath, “Pinky promise,”
“Pinky promise. I just want to look after you, in the ways that you’ll let me. If I can give you a bit of comfort with some food and a hug, then I’m going to,” he beamed at her.
To be honest, with him that would be all she needed. He always knew how to make things better.
*
Summer passed in a happy daze. Now that she was no longer a student, Kat had the whole summer free before she needed to be back in Denver. Cale had insisted that she take the time off to relax before looking for jobs – and with her agreeing to move in with him when they went back to Denver together, she knew she was lucky to have that security. So after moving her belongings from her campus apartment to Cale’s apartment, she flew back to New York to spend some time with her family. She’d seen her parents at her graduation, them having met Cale in person then too. Her mom adored him, obviously – and her dad, surprisingly, was won over immediately. Not that it was possible to dislike Cale, but as his only child and daughter, her boyfriends through high school (and the one guy she dated in college freshman year) had faced a much sterner treatment.
But not Cale. Never Cale.
So back to Queens she went, celebrating her graduation with her parents and aunts and uncles and cousins and childhood friends, having planned two weeks at home by herself before Cale joined her for a few days. They then had planned to spend another few days with her family before heading to Rome for a week, their first holiday away together (and Kat was unbearably excited), before heading up to see Cale’s family for a week. After that, they would head back to Denver together, to start the next chapter in their relationship.
That was the plan anyway.
And that was exactly how their summer went. Kat kept up with her sketching all the way throughout, inspired by the sights and the surroundings and the people around her, and she bolstered her resumé by submitting freelance to various magazines as well as creating an online profile for her portfolio, keeping her digital skills sharp on the many journeys she travelled.
Somehow it paid off. Kat kept up the freelance work while applying for jobs – as her professors and tutors had suggested – and while she got a fair few rejections for all kinds of reasons, after two months she got that lucky break. A graphic design company, specialising in the realism designs that she herself preferred, took a chance on her portfolio, inviting her to an interview for an entry level position – and she got the job.
Embrace the chances.
They had taken a chance on her, and she had taken a chance on them – now, it was time for her to start her first day. Kat couldn’t remember the last time she was this nervous. Her usual positivity was in short supply. Her glass half full nature was teetering. Her cheerful seize the day mentality was shaky at best.
But what was the best thing about living with her boyfriend? He was there by her side, ready to be her rock.
“Are you ready?” he asked, smiling.
“As I’ll ever be,” she nodded, trying to smile back.
Cale grinned at her attempts to keep her confidence up. He’d never met anyone like her, that was for sure.
"Remember to breathe," he teased.
Kat took a dramatic deep breath in and then out, making Cale laugh, and she couldn’t help but laugh herself.
Maybe that was his intention all along.
They were standing by the front door, Kat dressed in a new outfit that Cale insisted she let Mel Landeskog take her shopping for. To get her in the right mindset, he explained. Well, it had kind of worked, until it was time for her to pick up her bag and head out of the apartment. But Cale had been waiting for her, ready to give her that goodbye good luck kiss, and now it seemed, a confidence boost.
He smiled sweetly at her, taking both her hands in his, making her look up at him. “I believe in you, okay? You’re going to be amazing,”
Kat felt her cheeks heat up in a blush and she shook her head, earning a tsk from Cale.
“I’m just a junior associate. Not even a designer yet,”
“It’s a foot in the door. They hired you because of your portfolio – clearly they saw potential in you. This is the first step of many and you’re going to show them just how incredible and talented you are,” he said firmly.
She bit her bottom lip, looking up at him shyly. “You really do believe that, don’t you?”
Cale beamed and nodded, that genuine sincerity shining through as always.
“I believe it and I know it. You’re special, Kat. It’s time for you to show the world. Pinky promise,” he said softly.
Kat huffed out a laugh but squeezed his hands, still feeling a little dazed. How did he always know what to say? Even after all this time, how was he so wonderful?
“Pinky promise. You always know how to make me feel better,” she murmured.
“You deserve it. You deserve to be happy, to feel confident, to be secure, everything. All the time. If I can do that for you, then it makes me the happiest and luckiest guy in the world,”
Kat’s heart sped up just that little bit more. “You wonderful ridiculous man,”
“Your wonderful ridiculous man,” he grinned.
She just laughed. That he was.
*
“Kat, sweetheart, you’re burning up,”
Kat groaned and swatted at the hand that Cale placed on her forehead, trying to ignore her boyfriend as she pushed herself upright. Woah, dizzy. No, that was temporary, she was fine.
“Now is not the time for your stubbornness,” he mused.
“Now is the time for me to get up and go to work,” she grumbled, trying to hide her grimace at the feeling of the sweat at her hairline.
She had gone to bed feeling fine, that much she knew. And this definitely wasn’t fine. This was…ugh, this was awful. Her body ached, her head was groggy and she’d already sneezed three time in the last 15 minutes. Great. Just great. She didn’t have time to be ill!
But Cale’s gentle hand on her shoulder kept her from getting out of bed, and she just sighed as he crawled over to sit beside her.
“It’s a nasty flu sweetheart, you should be resting,” Cale said softly, eyebrows pinched together in concern.
“But it’s January!” she huffed, “I never get the flu past Christmas! I’ll be fine,”
Cale just laughed, shaking his head. “Guess you hit the jackpot this time. And no, you won’t be fine, you need to rest,”
Kat just pouted, eyes wide, making Cale laugh again.
“Don’t you pull that face at me,” he warned playfully, “you shouldn’t go to work and that’s final,”
“I’ve only been working there a couple of months, Cale. I haven’t even passed my probation yet. I can’t just take a day off!”
“Firstly, you told me last week that the flu has been going around your office, so this isn’t unexpected. And secondly, you absolutely can take a sick day. It’s a Friday and you haven’t got any deadlines for today or Monday – you can take one day off to let your body rest,” he insisted.
Damn it. She hated when he was right.
“I hate when you’re right,” she sighed.
Cale just pressed a kiss to her hair to hide his grin. “I know,”
She huffed out a laugh, ignoring the way it scratched her throat.
“Do think you can make it to the sofa?” he asked.
Kat bit her bottom lip, considering his question properly like she knew he wanted her too. Her head was foggy, but she wasn’t dizzy. Her legs were shaky, but her knees weren’t weak. Her runny nose and sore throat would be the same no matter where she was in the apartment. Yeah, she could make it to the sofa.
“Yeah, sofa sounds good,” she nodded.
Cale smiled and helped her stand up slowly, waiting until she was steady to release his hold on her.
“I’ll change the sheets and then come join you, okay?”
“I don’t want you to get sick though,” she frowned.
He just laughed. “This came on overnight for you, and we’ve been sharing a bed since I got back from the roadtrip three days ago. If I’m going to get it, then it’s already started,” he shrugged.
Kat grimaced. Disrupting Cale’s games, his chance to get on the ice, was the last thing she wanted. How could she not have planned better for this? As if he was reading her mind, Cale cupped her face with a hand, sending her a reassuring smile.
“None of that. No feeling guilty. I could just have easily caught a cold from one of the guys. Some of their kids picked up the flu in school this week,” Cale said firmly.
Kat sniffed but nodded, trying to push the negative thoughts away. That would do neither of them any good. “Are you sure you want to risk it?” she said softly.
“In sickness and in health, right?”
“Oh my god Cale, we’ve been together for just over a year,” she gasped, giggling.
What a thought though.
Cale just grinned. “Got your mind off things though, right?”
Kat just rolled her eyes playfully, sniffing again.
“Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. I don’t know why I put up with you,” she teased.
Cale laughed, tugging her against his body, making her shiver (in a good way, for the first time since she woke up). “Oh I can think of a few reasons. But for now, how about because I’m going to change the bedsheets while you walk yourself to the sofa, and then I’m going to join you with fresh orange juice and more medicine?” he offered.
Kat groaned, thunking her head against his collarbone. “You are a dream, Cale Makar. People as good as you don’t exist in real life,”
Cale just grinned, pressing a kiss to her forehead before stepping backwards. “Sofa, now. Go get comfy. Call your boss,”
She smiled at him, as sweetly and as genuinely as she could. Some day she would figure out what good thing she did in a past life to deserve this man.
“I’ll be waiting,”
“I’ll be quick,”
*
Playoffs were different this year. Firstly, last year Kat had been in her final year of college, struggling through her own pressure, whereas this year she experienced everything with The Avs full-on. Secondly, the team had made it to the second round, meaning the intensity ramped up to another level. Cale had been looking more and more exhausted as each game went on – now she understood why he was so upset with her lack of sleep last year, she got it – and there was only so much she could do to make him feel better. It was all she could do to be there if he needed her, offering that silent support, being that rock for him like he always was for her. As much as she wanted to do more, there just wasn’t more she could do.
She did her best to boost him with positivity, to hype him up before games, and for the most part it worked. He left their apartment with a smile, albeit a tired one, and always gave her a hug and a kiss whenever he saw her and left her.
It was enough and it was everything. Until it wasn’t.
The Avs battled until Game 6, hard fought and worn to the bone, but again it wasn’t enough. Kat could feel the devastation all the way from the family box, clutching at Cale’s mom’s hand for a lifeline, tears springing to her eyes. All of this intense pressure, these injuries, these sacrifices, without the ultimate prize to show that everything was worth it.
Playoffs were different this year. But she was still Kat and he was still Cale, and together they would work out a way to make it through. Somehow. Embrace the unknown, right?
Eventually, everyone trickled out of the arena. It was a blessing that they were playing at home, so they didn’t have the long journey back. Cale’s dad had offered to drive, so Kat had stayed with Cale in the back seat, Cale clinging to her hand with no intention of letting go. Not that Kat minded in the slightest. She didn’t want him to let go either. It was all too soon before Cale’s parents dropped them off, returning to their hotel and leaving Cale and Kat by themselves. They stayed silent, barely moving away any distance from each other as they shuffled through the apartment to their bedroom, Cale kicking the door shut behind them, shutting out the rest of the world.
Eventually when they had both fully stripped off and crawled into bed, Cale let out a weary sigh.
“I really thought this was our year,” he said quietly.
Quietly, as in trying to hold back tears. Quietly, as in devastating Kat all over again.
“You fought so hard,” she whispered back.
“Just not hard enough,” he muttered.
“Hey, no, you pushed yourself to your limit. No-one can ask more than that,” she insisted.
Cale laughed bitterly. “I bet the media and the fans and management have something different to say,”
Kat scowled, a rare expression on her face, and looked at him head-on, making Cale pay attention. “Anyone that tries to say different doesn’t know their shit. You worked your ass off, played to the bone, fought tooth and nail to get this far. How many of you played through injuries, hm? How many injuries did you yourself play through?”
Cale winced, trying not to think about the twinge in his shoulder or the dark bruising on his ribs, both of which had needed rest for some time now. Kat sighed, running a hand through her hair, before cupping his face with her hand.
“I love you Cale. You were amazing. Are amazing. I couldn’t have asked for more from you and I am sure as hell not disappointed in you,” Kat said firmly.
“You’re not?”
It was the hesitation in his voice that broke her heart a little.
“Not even a little bit. I’m so proud of you,” she murmured.
Cale let out a shaky breath, moving to bury his face against her bare shoulder, allowing her to run her fingers up and down his bare back.
“Hey, what can I do?” she asked softly.
“Just hold me for a while. Please,” Cale said quietly.
“Of course, anything you need. Pinky promise,” she replied.
Katerina Stewart didn’t believe in coincidences. Everything happened for a reason – every choice she made, every direction she had gone in, had led her to this moment. It had led her to Cale Makar. And there was nowhere else she would rather be.

So, I’ve been thinking about Viktor and about how the events of the s1 finale could take him at least slightly closer to his game counterpart.
Again, I don’t know whether that is anywhere near their priority list at all. And like my worst case scenario is that Viktor’s storyline barely progresses in season 2 except he get some more bits consumed by the void/listens to the song of the void and that’s about it.
1.) So Viktor and everybody almost dies from the explosion. That makes Viktor super focused on personal safety and leans him slightly towards the “try to eradicate failure” mindset.
2.) What if Jinx’s attack on the council leads to a major paranoia and crackdown and Viktor loses his position/gets banned from Piltover simply due to being a Zaunite. Because there is just mass suspicion against anybody Zaunite, you know Japanese internment camps, plost 9/11 paranoia against everything middle eastern etc. And Viktor and Jayce have a falling out because Jayce is very sorry, but Viktor feels like Jayce is not defending him enough? (though I feel like a storyline doesn’t feel that likely (though it would be super topical) mostly because I think Vi and Cait will be teaming up)
3.)  I can’t shake the feeling that with Silco gone they probably have to introduce another chem baron character as a dispotable antagonist. I think even if they do Camille and Warwick neither of them are really suitable to provide conflict for the whole cast (now Urgot is another matter). So maybe after the attack there are crackdowns but Viktor as one of the “good Zaunites” is not affected? But he chooses to go to the undercity and work as a scientist for one of the factories there to increase safety like his original lore and the person he works for (male or female) is basically that replacement chem baron character.

Morning Routines:
Cait:
•Never once having put her personal care to the forefront of her mind, Cait simply rolls out of whatever she was sleeping on and messily takes her hair out her face.
•She'll do a couple stretches once she gains her bearings and the drowsiness isn't as consuming- just to get the blood pumping before she goes out.
•Her routine may be simple, but hey..it's her's.
Curie:
•Well, let's just start by saying this is in her synthetic body.
•Curie's first order of business as soon as she wakes up is to immediately put both feet on the ground and take a deep breath- appreciating the jolting cold of her bare feet on the ground. Such funny sensations one who had been human all their life would think unpleasant- for her, it reminded her she was very much so alive and real.
•After getting dressed and ready for the day, she makes a point to take her favourite pen and click it three times before she writes the heading of the day's notes in her little pocket book.
Danse:
•no matter if the Paladin is still in the brotherhood or not, the routines he picked up from them is a forever thing.
•He gets up at nearly the same time each morning (unless the night before included some strenuous activity), takes a shower if it is available, brushes his teeth, then gets dressed to go for breakfast and a brisk run.
•However if Danse is accompanying sole or is otherwise in a place where these luxuries aren't available, He'll dutifully adhere to strict Gaurd duty and usually just fall asleep later on anyways...so no strict Paladin routines.
Deacon:
•He is ever adaptable. Deacon knows no true "routines" because he is never really just one type of person! That sounds absolutely crazy, but it makes sense. Think about it, what better way to immerse yourself into the role you're playing as spy than to alter each little detail of your life as you know it?
•Totally has no negative affects in his life whatsoever.
Hancock:
•He takes his time when it comes to getting up in the morning. Hancock opts for simply relaxing, letting himself ease into consciousness by propping himself up on his pillows..maybe lighting a cigarette or two. He simply doesn't believe in rushing.
•After throughout enjoying his cigarette and peaceful morning, he'll get up and start dancing about to whatever Diamond city song is blaring on the radio before finally getting dressed.
Gage:
•Gage is by no means a morning person, but when he finally does get good and ready to wake up- it's straight action with him.
•He'll quite literally get out of bed and stretch before going straight into lunges, push ups, and maybe even a couple of pull ups if the necessary equipment is present. His thought process is that by doing all that- he'll be that much more ready when the inevitable fight happens later on while reclaiming a park or something.
•Honestly though? He's just so attached to keeping that one constant control, he wouldn't give up his routine for anything.
Macready:
•Doesn't ever wake up gracefully, nor does he proceed about the first hours of waking gracefully either.
•He usually finds himself drowsily grumbling as he stumbles around in search for something to drink, not even bothering to dress unless he absolutely must.
•Eventually he completely "wakes up" but it takes a little while and a whole lot of push back from him...even if it's him griping at his own self.
Maxson:
•Being Brotherhood born and raised, Arthur has an almost robotic way of conducting his morning routine. Each activity has a designated time, down to when he brushes his teeth.
•First he gets up, systematically puts himself together for the day (be it hygiene or actually putting on his flight suit). Then he'll clean the weapons he hardly ever uses anymore before putting them back up- counting the ammunition in his footlocker shortly thereafter.
•After a relatively strong swig of whatever liquor is leftover at his bedside, he'll go out of his quarters and take care of whatever needs his attention.
Nick:
•As peculiar as he finds it, he feels the most comfortable when he emulates the same rituals that the "old" Nick used to do.
•A synth may have no business doing so, but he starts the day off by simply sitting at his desk- a cup of old coffee in one hand and a freshly lit cigarette in the other. Then he'll peruse the same pathetically preserved newspaper from centuries ago- knowing well that Piper prints a new one yet not being able to will himself to give up the one he has read years and years over again.
Piper:
•It kind of depends where she is-
•On a normal morning where she is with Nat, she'll roll out of bed, try to fix her hair up as nice as possible before throwing together whatever she has for breakfast before her little sister can wake up (that way it's fresh)
•Otherwise, Piper takes it easy in the mornings. She'll of course take care of those luscious locks of her's, but she'll only do so after going outside (still in pajamas) and smoking a cigarette with a nice ice cold nuka cola, maybe striking up conversation with sole or a settler. After this though, she's ready for the day.
Preston:
•Used to traveling with people and looking out for them, Preston's first order of business each morning is to hurry up and get together his clothes and laser musket. Doesn't matter if he was sleeping better than a baby (which, you know, in the wasteland probably isn't easy), he will still get a move on it as early as possible.
•After doing a decent once over around the perimeter, Preston usually goes to share a cup of fresh Brahmin milk with Sturges before the synth goes out to start fixing things. Maybe afterwards he'll go throw some scraps out to Dogmeat, granted sole's companion is staying at Sanctuary.
X6-88:
•Sadly, X6 doesn't necessarily have any specific morning rituals. The man simply stares at the clean, white wall ahead of him with bleary eyes- mustering every shred of his being into shaking away the sweet grasp of sleep- pushing away all that he found himself dreaming of in favor of putting on those glasses of his and finally getting up.
•Nothing too complicated.

Thank you so much for taking your time responding me ! I love your analysis so much ! If you don't mind me asking other asks I was wondering if you could make a post with the breakup scene under the rain between Vi and Caitlyn because I still can't understand why they decided to make such a scene ? Why Vi had to tell Cait such things ? Also I I don't play LOL but you seem to have lot of infos concerning the characters like when you write about the time Vi spend at Stillwater.Where have you find?
Sure, I don't mind :) Ahhh the angsty rain breakup scene! Yeah, so initially when I first watched that scene it reminded me of a line from a Chris Isaak song ("there will be no soft goodbye, no slow walk in the rain") and I just started laughing which is not the reaction I think the writers were going for. xD But I just found it so funny because of how tropey and stereotypically romantic that scene was, like we were suddenly watching The Notebook or something. But see the thing is Arcane leans heavily on a lot of tropes, but for the most part it's able to execute them well AND subvert them in really interesting, and usually emotionally devastating, ways. The CaitVi breakup scene is drawing on and invoking a tried and true key structural element of a lot of romantic stories, or stories with a significant romantic subplot (especially in movies) where two characters who have a blossoming romance hit some kind of serious roadblock in their relationship. Something comes between them, like there's some sort of misunderstanding, one character feels like the other has betrayed them, the stress of the events of the rest of the story drive them apart, etc. This is the Lowest Point of their plot and it's used to build dramatic tension which will then be cathartically resolved when the lovers end up overcoming their obstacles and triumphantly getting together at the end. So the rain breakup scene is Vi and Caitlyn's Lowest Point, because Vi is basically giving up on the relationship (I'll get more into why a bit later) and it looks like they're going their separate ways never to see each other again. It's also the point at which their romance goes from subtext (which had been building since episode 5) to full on text. Like they basically smack the audience in the face with how much these two are in love with each other in such an obvious way I think at least partially because a significant portion of audiences often miss (or are willfully blind to) romantic tension between characters of the same sex (I think this is particularly true for lesbian couples). And then, as if the rain scene wasn't enough, on top of that later in the episode, as a kind of thematic continuation, they had Caitlyn's angsty thirst scene in the shower to make it as obvious as possible that these two, or at the very least Caitlyn, is very much in love. Another thing I think the rain breakup scene (as well as the shower scene) does is it very strongly suggests that Something happened between the two of them in the first half of the episode. So, on the morning of the day that episode 8 takes place on, after Caitlyn gets her wound treated, she comes back into her bedroom where she and Vi have a heart-to-heart, the most tender moment between them to date, Caitlyn brushes Vi's cheek, Vi takes her hand and then....there's a hard cut away and we don't see the two of them again until several hours later when they go to address the council. Amanda Overton confirmed on Twitter that this time gap was intentionally suggestive. I've said before that it's basically missing scene fanfic bait. But my main point here is that, the way Caitlyn and Vi act towards each other ("what about us" "wasn't meant to be") during the rain scene does not really make sense unless there was more significant physical affection between them during those missing hours. I'm not saying outright sexual since they would both have been exhausted from their adventures in the undercity and the fight on the bridge, but I think at least very intimate sleeping together (and I mean actual sleeping here lol). Now, like I suggested before, the breakup scene (and by extension the Caitlyn shower scene) is largely meant to build dramatic tension which is further built on and ratcheted up when Jinx kidnaps Caitlyn. Jinx's later threats to kill Caitlyn have so much more impact because we know (more or less) how Vi and Caitlyn feel about each other as established during the breakup scene, and further reenforced by Vi's panicked reactions to the head-on platter fakeout, and Jinx's threats to shoot Caitlyn. Also the fact that Vi left Caitlyn basically heartbroken makes Caitlyn's possibly imminent death even more scary and potentially tragic.
I could say a lot more to say about how the ViCait romantic subplot is tentatively resolved in the final climax of the season, but that will have to wait for a part 2, if you're interested. Earlier I said my initial reaction to the rain scene was (inappropriate) laughter because of how blatant the romantic tropes were. On repeat viewings I did end up connecting to the sadness and tragedy of that scene (which is probably more what they were going for) because it does reveal a lot about especially Vi's (bad) headspace, especially in light of what she does later in episode 8 and 9. I've argued elsewhere that Vi has been thoroughly conditioned to accept the pathological, systemic social inequality between Piltover and Zaun, first by Vander's mentorship and then later by her experience in prison. Her "oil and water" speech here drives that home because she compares the social system to an immutable physical law. This makes her think that on some fundamental level she and Caitlyn are incompatible as a couple, which is a staple of Lady and the Tramp-type romances, where two characters from wildly different socio-economic backgrounds end up falling in love. At some point in stories like that at least one of the characters starts to feel like the differences between their backgrounds are insurmountable. Secondly, and more subtly (much more on the level of subtext), and I think more interestingly, you can really feel Vi's past mistakes and self-contempt weighing on her during the rain scene. Everyone in her life she has cared about is dead or horribly corrupted and it's her fault (or at least that's what I think she thinks). Now just as she's developing deep feelings for Caitlyn, it scares her because she thinks Caitlyn will also end up dead or corrupted if she sticks with her, which I think is what's partially behind her telling Caitlyn to just go back to her house and forget her (Jinx isn't the only one who feels like she destroys everything she loves). As part of that I think Vi, after the failure with the council, is mentally preparing herself to make one last ditch attempt to save her sister, or failing that, at least exact revenge on Silco, which may be a suicide run, and she doesn't want to drag Caitlyn down with her and get her hurt or killed in the process. Also, you asked about my reference to Vi's prison records. Those are included in the "Council Archives" which are basically extra materials Riot released alongside the show that give further insight into Jayce, Vi, Caitlyn, and Jinx. Nursey leaves poetry all over their room.
This wouldn’t be A Big Deal (even though a year ago, there would have been a reckoning so great that not even pie could smooth it over) except for the fact that it’s.  Well.  The sappiest thing Will has ever read.  He hasn’t brought it up yet, but -
“It’s weird, right?” he asks, fidgeting with a pencil.
Chowder draws another shark doodle in the margins of Will’s notes.  It’s a small price to pay.  “We’re seniors, dude.  I’d write lovestruck poetry over Cait, if I thought it would turn out well.”
“Your poetry is terrible,” Will informs him, and is promptly hit in the face by a notebook.  “I’m saving your relationship!”
“I’m just saying, graduation makes people sentimental!”  Chowder retorts.
Will rolls his eyes.  “There’s plenty of time until graduation.”
“Dex,” Chowder says suspiciously, “you’ve started your senior thesis, right?”
“Yes,” Will replies, because he has.  Kind of.  He’s got a rough outline.  “I’m not Bitty, Cap.”
“No, you are not.”  Chowder sighs, both in relief and disappointment, and waves a hand at him.  “Now make me some pies, Bitty replacement.”
“Technically, the captain made pies last year.”  Will grumbles, but he climbs off Chowder’s bed and leaves him alone.
“Nobody wants me to make the desserts, Dex!”  Chowder calls after him.
Considering the poetry is Nursey’s, it’s pretty good.  As far as Will can tell at least - words have never been his strong suit.  He can’t even consistently string sentences together in his own head.  His roommate listens to classical music and musical theater and songs that have messages instead of easily repeatable choruses.
What is the point of listening to something that takes you hours to memorize.
Will thinks the issue is that Nursey and romance have rarely been linked together in his mind, because all he seems to do is date someone for a few months, avoid introducing them to anyone on the team, and then get dumped.  Then Will and Chowder have to throw him a pity party, which Nursey inevitably seems to enjoy more than the relationship.
Those are the facts.
However, the newest fact is that Nursey is writing sappy poetry, which he’s never done before, and there’s been absolutely zero mention of anyone new - secretive weirdo.  He’s always at least told them there’s someone, in the past.  Will knows for a fact that Nursey would be pissed if he pulled this kind of shit.  Probably because he has.  Last year.  Whoops.
“Seriously, Dex, I think six months is enough time to tell us!”  Chowder complains, crossing his arms in an attempt at anger.  The pout he’s sporting ruins the effect.
Nursey throws another eraser at him.  Will is fairly certain he bought a new pack just for this purpose, which is cheating, because now Will can’t steal one of those erasers every time he needs one.  “Chyeah.  Very unchill.”
“The word chill has lost its meaning,” Will says sagely, and the offended look Nursey gives him almost quells his urge to murder.  “But we broke up.  End of story.  I’m telling you about him now.”
“Why not before, though?”  Nursey sulks.  He’s not even throwing his eraser.
“Oh, like you can talk.”
So.  Interrogation it is.
“Nursey.”
“Dex.  Chowder.”
Muffled whispers.  “He didn’t leave me with anything to say.”
“Stick to the script, Chow.”
“I really don’t see why the cop light is necessary,”  Nursey speaks up, unimpressed.  Wordlessly, Will switches it off.
Chowder slams a stack of papers down on the desk.  “Derek Nurse, as your captain, I demand you tell us who you’re writing about.  There are papers everywhere.”
“Everywhere?” Nursey frowns.
Will pulls another few papers from his pockets, slapping them down one after the other.  “Dining table.  Blender.  Couch.  Shower.  Oven.”
“How did those even get in there?”  Nursey mumbles, and Chowder presses his index fingers to his lips.
As much as Will wishes he could take credit for stashing them in enough places to create a problem, Nursey’s done that all on his own.  Chowder being on his team just outweighs the distress at baking a pie that came out covered in flaming paper.
Possibly out of guilt, Nursey had fearfully eaten an entire piece as Will made aggressive, angry eye contact.
Will grabs Nursey’s face in his hands and shakes it.  “Please.  I have read so much more than I ever wanted.”
“You’ve read them?”  Nursey yelps, at the same time Chowder points out “Nobody’s making you read them.”
“Also,” Will says slowly, scanning the latest poem.  “If she has hair this short, and she wears flannel, and - is the red hair natural? - dude, she might be a lesbian.  Like, totally not judging, but that’s kind of a style.”
Nursey looks like he wants to die.  Chowder looks like he wants to kill him.  “... how many of these have you read?”
“Maybe…” Will thinks back to when the poems started, months ago.  “A hundred?”
As Nursey slowly pulls his hoodie over his head, Chowder stares at him with deadened eyes.
Gradually, Will starts to realize that this may have been a serious breach of privacy, in which case he’s a dick.  “I don’t mean to, but they’re in our room, Nurse.  Our shared room.”
Nursey lets out a high keening sound.
“... I’m really sorry?” he tries, and Chowder pinches the bridge of his nose.
“You should be,” he says, and leaves.
Nursey shows no signs of reemerging from his sweatshirt cocoon, so Will hesitantly settles in the seat next to him.  “So.  Freckles?  That’s kind of a lame thing to write so much about.”
“I like them,” Nursey grumbles, and Will feels.  Hmm.  Warm.  His face is warm, that’s gross and he hates it, okay then.
Nursey’s hypothetical person probably has nice, controlled ones across the bridge of their nose.  That’s always cute, even if Will himself doesn’t look for it.  He likes… something else, that’s dangerous to think about.
He rolls his shoulders, as if he can roll the thought out of his mind.  Nursey groans, emerges from his hoodie, and blinks up at Will like he’s mad.  “You suck.”
“What have I done now,” Will deadpans, “beside invade your personal privacy and interrogate you about something I have no business knowing.”
Nursey always looks at him like he’s looking at his whole face, instead of just his eyes.  “Figure it out.”
“Very mature.”
“Chill,” Nursey drawls, corners of his mouth poking up, and Will watches the shift.
Uh.  Okay.  Maybe Nursey and romance are tied closer together in his mind than he thought.
“Yeah, sure, why not?” his mouth manages, and Nursey blinks at him.  Stupid betrayer of a mouth.  “Could I - guess who it is?”
“Oh my god.”
“Do they have glasses,” Will starts, and Nursey pushes him out of his seat.
“No,” Nursey says through gritted teeth, “because they are stupid and take care of their eyes and are you.”
Will blinks up at him.  “Actually, I might need glasses in a few years.”
Then he grabs Nursey’s arm, pulls himself up, and flicks the string of his hoodie.  “I’m ‘like a tiger lily’?  Had to look that one up, by the way.”
“Fuck off my similies,” Nursey moans, and Will links their arms together to prevent his escape.  “I had written a lot.”
“This creates unfair expectations,” Will informs him, “because now I have to code, like, two hundred programs that somehow express affection.”
“Or,” Nursey suggests, “you could just go out with me.”
“Very poetic,” Dex says, and runs out the door before Nursey can tell him that the correct word is ‘eloquent’.  “Meet you at Annies!”
