Distinctive physical characteristics: While she looks mostly human, Avara’s body is stained black, and her hands and feet terminate in flexible red claws rather than normal fingers and toes. Her eyeballs at times are pits of darkness rather than white, with the distinctive glowing yellow iris/pupils of a heartless. These features make it difficult for her to blend in with normal humans, and so she spends a lot of time hiding in the shadows and watching people in those times when she can sneak away from her keepers. In addition, Avara’s heartless emblem is white, and acts as a seal and a stabilizer for her synthetic heart.

{The price of a human soul}

Beyond some hazy memories and foggy impressions, Avara knows nothing about life before she became what she is, only that when she opened her eyes for the first time, there were many strangers standing around her, muttering in approval that the ‘process was a success’.

She does not and may never admit to knowing about the young woman who's face she bears, or the strange act of love that brought her into the world. A princess taken by the darkness who's family would have given anything to bring her back. A family who tried to rebuild her lost heart and created what they called an abomination instead. She ruined them all while wearing the face of the one they lost.

The top scientists of their world were given the task; rebuild a missing heart or create a new one for their lost child. Her heartless kept in containment until the work could be done, more than a year passed as they tried over and over again to distill or synthesize the essence of a human soul. When at last she awoke, they believed they had done the impossible. A heartless restored to their previous state. Their incomplete knowledge of heartless held no concept of nobodies or what they meant for the little black beasts.

Only a moment after she awoke, their creation transformed from her beautiful human appearance into a monster. A feral beast that destroyed many of the people around her. The King lost his life to her and the Queen had to be rushed out of the room, screaming all the while that they'd created nothing but a horror. An affront both to nature and to the memory of her daughter.

{A false heart}

Her rampage came to a halt at last when all her energy seemed to be expended and the creature could not even maintain a human like appearance anymore, reduced to a small and weak form that was more easily contained. Even this was something of a struggle though. Small and tired, she was still fast and slippery and gave them as much of a chase as she could muster.

The Queen wanted nothing more than for this creature to be destroyed, but those who remained saw too much wasted effort and research in such a decision and instead kept her once again in containment, planning to study her further. They hadn't failed they thought, there was something there that caused her to resemble the princess, after all.

By putting her through a second series of experiments and imprinting her with a special seal they finally achieve some small measure of stability in her transformation. They attempted then to ascertain if she was indeed the lost princess, only to find that she refused any familiarity with them, claiming no memory of her life before they woke her that fateful day. Moreso, although she looked mostly human now her body seemed to be covered from the neck down in a coal colored second skin, with monstrous dark hands and feet ending in red claws. Her sometimes appear dark, lit by the yellow glow of her heartless irises.

With the feral beast was still lurking within her there were times when even the seal could not keep her clear minded. The transformation occurred seemingly at random, as she attempted to devour any and every living heart within her reach, and with the Queen still against the entire project the woman was kept under lock and key. Her behavior both when stable and not eventually earned her the moniker “Lady Avarice”, acting spoiled and ravenous despite her claims to not remember her life as royalty.

{The scent of freedom}

Not until some time after her sealing and confinement did they become aware of the beings called nobodies. A new and rising threat contending for their attention with the already rampant heartless. With forces spread thin and in need of more defenses against their enemies the royal court came to the decision that their experiment could prove useful in the fight. She'd be allowed to roam outside of her cage from time to time to combat these monsters, but only as the beast. The Queen forbade her to be seen wearing her human appearance. She would be released to hunt the nobodies and heartless until exhaustion, when her form became small and she could be contained once again.

For all these restrictions, Avara enjoyed her time being feral. During those times, when she was let loose from her cage she could remember albeit dimly the smell of fresh air and the exciting change of scenery that followed. Even if the memories were half formed and blurry. She was used to those kinds of memories really. Hardly different from the ones of that past everyone else seemed to be so much more interested in.

There was something else too, something that she never spoke of to the guards who stood outside her birdcage-like prison and often mocked her not-quite-human appearance. She felt things. They had said that she couldn’t. That a being with a fake and malformed heart could never feel anything real. But she did. She felt hurt by their words. She felt longing for freedom. She felt a dull ache from the seal that kept her mostly under control.

The Lady often wondered what other things she’d feel if she were allowed to roam free.

Powers and Abilities:

HeartBreak – At times (particularly when the seal on her synthetic heart weakens) Avara will shift from her normal human state to that of a vaguely animalistic heartless. Her main body being all black and with yellow glowing eyes. She has an emblem marking her chest and bright red claws on her hands and feet, as well as a while cloud-like mane running from her shoulders down to her back, trailing off into a kind of tail at the end. While the emblem seems to work as a seal, wisps of darkness can often be seen coming off of her body, and even her antennae tend to dissipate into smoke at the ends.

In this form, Avara gains an additional claw on the inner side of each ankle, resembling a raptors claw and functioning in much the same way, allowing her to rend enemies viciously with her feet.

Heart/Keyblade sense – Like all heartless, Avara can sense and is also drawn to the presence of hearts, and the keyblades that release them. When these things are near she can have trouble keeping herself under control, as she is fighting against a natural urge possessed by all heartless. She may not try to take the heart, but she can become a bit grabby and intrusive on an individual.

Shadow walk – When she is weakened and small, Avara has the ability to take on a 1-dimensional ‘shadow form’ just as a pure heartless can, she doesn’t use this ability often, and whether or not she can access it outside of her smaller form remains to be seen. While in this form she can move about freely, and cannot be attacked. However she cannot attack others either, she must come out of the shadows for that.

Dark Corridor – Avara has the ability to create and pass through dark portals connecting the various worlds together. These are used mainly for traveling, and cannot be utilized in a combat scenario.

Brought another one of my OG faves into Night City parlor, this time Avara, Azul/Chester's ex/close friend. She used to be known only as Avara, but I realized she'd have the same nickname as another character of mine, Avane, so I gave her a different first name and Avara is now her surname lol. I also didn't feel like doing lineart, so I just tidied up the sketches a bit and colored those.

Name: Iris Avara (Avara is finnish (my native) and means "spacious/open")

Nicknames: Ms. Avara/professor (her students), Ris, starlady (Azul, Reuben)

Age: 36

Height: 163 cm

Friends: Miriam Belarose (her co-worker and closest non-childhood friend) Beatrice (A forest witch journalist who often requires her assistance with her investigations) Azul (former BF-of-sorts, and a childhood friend) Reuben (Azul's brother), Diojas (Azul's current love-interest)

Love-interest: none

Family: Avara family siblings Ilves, Kuura, Aura, and Varis (her adoptive family)

Powers:

Visions: Astral magic wielders can typically utilize many types of visions, from premonitions to ability to see into the past/see things others do not aka clairvoyance. Iris has specifically honed her skill with the last two, but does occasionally get premonitions.

Light-bending: basically light elemental magic, where she can control and manipulate light from making lasers to dispelling dark magic, though the most she uses it for is illuminate her way through dim library corridors.

Astral projection: She can project herself into the astral plane to contact others even through time or alternate timelines, or just to reach someone's dreams

Aurora Borealis spell: She has a special spell that takes the form of northern lights, which can be used as a pathway to somewhere, or a shield to protect against physical and magical attacks. She mainly uses the former trick, though.

Weaknesses:

Because her magic type is so rare, she often feels there's a lot of pressure and expectations on her to perform well, making her work way too hard sometimes, to the point of exhaustion. Her biological family - whom she has disowned - did not help with it much.

talking of her parents, they wanted to pressure her into marrying someone she didn't like, which has caused her some struggles with actually having a romantic relationship, because of her trust issues/tendency to think anything more serious might just be someone else yet again imposing their will onto her. She is somewhat aware her thinking is warped, but she can't help it.

Personality:

Iris is intelligent, strict but fair teacher with passion for learning more about her topics of interest, and digging deep into whatever mystery comes her way. Outside her teacher-job, she is quite playful and mischievous, and can come off very flirtatious. Given her past, she tends to not be serious about it, and typically only acts that way around those she trusts/those who know she's just teasing them.

She's generally kind of afraid of serious romantic relationships due to her trauma, which is one of the reasons why she broke it off with Azul/Chester. Outside romance though, Iris is very good at maintaining relationships, and is a very trustworthy friend to have. She's somebody who always knows a trick or two to help you out, or has some obscure piece of knowledge you've been looking for - or knows someone who has it.

She is a hard-worker to a fault, and also a very dedicated teacher who wants to make sure everyone passes her classes if she can help it.

FUN FACTS

Beatrice and Iris share the same taste in fashion, and shop in the same places. It's actually where they met.

Iris loves form-fitting retro dresses with dramatic flares included, and generally prefers dressing very feminine. She does sometimes wear pants though, retro fashion of course.

She mostly wears her hair in a small bun when at work, to keep it away from her eyes.

Iris is bisexual, though tends to prefer more masculine presenting people slightly. She finds Beatrice's girlfriend (who's more butch type) very attractive for example, as well as Azul's current boyfriend Diojas.

Her style is largely a combo of retro vibes and old school Hollywood glamour, topped with night-sky/galaxy inspired colors.

She is a fan of Azul's opera singer mother, Annabelle, and her hairstyle is somewhat inspired by her.

Her surname "Avara" was actually chosen by her as she wanted to completely distance herself from her birth family.

Caelan, a member of the protagonist family, is one of her favorite students, given how inquisitive and naturally curious he is.

Iris has 3 familiars, specifically three white wolves names Orion, Lyra, and Lupus. She's often seen walking them around town, with people wondering how on earth she can handle three massive fluffballs at once.

Lyra is the smartest of the three, whereas Lupus is the biggest. Orion is the goofiest of the bunch, often making funny faces

Sometimes she rides Lupus to work if she doesn't feel like walking (she lives close to campus)

She's one of the few people who knows Chester's real, original name is Azul Samaros. She was the first person outside his family he told it to.

While their romantic feelings have waned, her and Azul still have a strong and healthy platonic bond, something that if they were the same gender, would be called "bromance" or "sisterhood" basically.

Another one off my to-do list yaaay! I initially meant to keep her OG hairstyle, but realized it'd look too similar with her bestie Iris, so I changed it.

While she appears more in the spin-off side of my story, Miriam is still a teacher for some of the main story characters, namely Hayden and Caelan.

Anyway, more info below: (She is a newer one, so things will still likely develop overtime, but tried to put the basics down)

Nicknames: Mia/Bell (Iris) Bells (Azul)

Age: 38

Height: 157 cm

Friends: Azul (A sorcerer and a childhood friend of her bestie who sometimes asks for her assistance with his quest) Reuben (Azul's brother) Beatrice (A forest witch journalist) Ilves, Kuura, Aura & Varis Avara (Iris' adoptive siblings, as in, their family adopted her) Mariella Marisol (A tree nymph)

Love-interest: none

Powers:

Visions: As a medium, Miriam can foresee the potential consequences of decisions made, or look into the past of a spirit or an object. She can also get more vague forewarning about something, such as a sense of something going wrong, or needing to play closer attention to something.

Astral projection: She can project herself into the astral plane to contact others or discuss with spirits, or to physically travel into another location. (Generally speaking, all magic users can perform some form of this, but Mediums tend to spend the most time in there, and they can contact spirits the easiest)

Astral Access: mediums are unique also in the sense that they can go absolutely ANYWHERE in the spirit realm, unlike other magic users. This is because they are naturally attuned to it, and their presence therefore doesn't disturb or bother anything in there. (More powerful magic users often have to force/bargain their way in for example.)

Exorcism: She is able to banish dangerous spirits or remove weak-to-medium strength possessions from people or objects

Spirit realm expertise: Miriam is especially knowledgeable of the spirit realm and its quirks and dangers, and can recognize a potential threat coming through it instantly, or what area she is in.

Weaknesses:

Because she is a Mage, she is considered among the weakest magic users, and has very limited capability ultimately; for example, while she can perform exorcisms and remove possessions, she isn't capable of removing the more powerful types.

While her mind is very resilient against mental invasions, that is more due to her nature rather than her magic; if she is not doing that well mentally, her protections can be breached fairly easily, and once something gets in, she'll need some help to remove it.

Personality:

Miriam is calm and collected woman, who tends to be incredibly patient. She needs to have the nerves of steel because of the kind of people she's surrounded with; where her friends are up to Shenanigans, she tends to be the mature one and remind them that "while yes, you can go and do this crazy thing, but at least be properly prepared for it, you reckless idiot."

She's one of those people who enjoys small things in life such as good cup of tea or a silent moment gardening, and tends to find people who can't appreciate things like these a little vain or at least in need of a break and reflection.

While seemingly the calm and serious one, Miriam absolutely has a sense of humor, and tends to laugh at "bad" jokes, namely puns. She also is absolutely down to help students out with little harmless shenanigans, like ghost hunting (also because she can protect them if there IS a ghost) or wanting to throw a surprise party for someone.

FUN FACTS

Miriam is one of the teachers for one of the members of the main story protagonist family, Caelan, as well as Caelan's friend Hayden.

She was initially kind of sus about meeting Iris' ex boyfriend, given she didn't have full context about that situation as Iris hadn't told her much at that point yet (She only knew he's her ex and a wanted criminal), but after meeting Azul and getting to know him, she figured he's a good person after all

She has a bit of a green thumb, and even those with natural magic connected to plantlife (like Beatrice) tend to be impressed by her home garden.

She met Mariella while the nymph had just started her new job in the biggest city park, after leaving behind her old job as a Guardian for one of the Life trees, and helped her to get to know the area a bit better as Miriam is very familiar with it

Both her and Iris are bookworms and often have long discussions about literacy, be it just debates about the themes of a specific book, or literacy trends at large

Just quick-ish portraits I did for some minor characters in NCP, specifically the adoptive family/siblings of Iris & the guardians of the Blue Spruce life tree. I didn't know how to put them together so I ended up just putting each portrait separately.

Their names are (from top to bottom) Ilves, Varis, Aura & Kuura. Their names are also Finnish words I personally like as a Finn, though only 1 is an actual name (I think, I have a vague memory of Aura being one)

They aren't fully Finnish though, their mother is but their father is a mirror-world native whose exact heritage is unknown. (Aura especially comes after her dad)

More Info below:

AGES: Kuura is youngest at 26, Aura comes next at 28, then there's a bit of a gap with Varis being 42 and Ilves is 47

NAME EXPLANATIONS:

Kuura = Specific type of frost

Aura = snowplow/plow/same meaning as in english depending on context, I.E a magical spiritual atmosphere surrounding a person

Varis = Crow

Ilves = Lynx

MAGIC TYPES: All 4 have a different magic type/title

Kuura is an ice elemental

Aura is a Snow Warlock (her Deity she gets the power from being Jack Frost),

Varis is a Graywalker Sorcerer (basically winter/cold themed magic that is not just about ice and snow, but a lot of things you can connect to the concept of cold and wintertime)

Ilves is a shapeshifter mage, mainly shifting into different large felines, his favorite being the snow leopard.

OCCUPATION: Their family has been guarding and managing the Northernmost Life Tree the Blue Spruce for generations. They basically greet all the souls that are born from it and help them find new families and places to go to, to start their new life. They also protect the tree from attacks and disease.

IMPORTANT CONNECTIONS: They are the adoptive family of Iris Avara (hence she shares their surname), and are friends of Marci Raye, who ended up adopting a young spirit manifested by their tree around the time she was staying with them. They are ALSO cousins of a human named Henrik Thorssen, who is the nephew of their father.

OTHER FAMILY: Their parents have retired to the human world, Norway to be specific, but still do send their kids letters. Varis has a family of his own, being the only one married and having 3 kids, two sons and one daughter. His full name is therefore Varis Avara-Harker.

PERSONALITY SUMMARY:

Ilves: The relaxed, mostly chill tall AF guy who, despite looking kind of scary at first glance, is every kid's favorite uncle who gets them the toys they want and also helps out with homework. Has a good sense of humor and is not easy to piss off, though when he DOES get mad people know to shut up.

Varis: While he seems constantly tired due to his insomnia issues since childhood, he is very gentle, attentive and caring dad/husband/brother, and shows his love for others more through actions than words. Tends to be the most serious one among his siblings.

Aura: The most outgoing and adventurous of the four, she tends to prefer doing things over sitting around and chat. Can be a bit of a troublemaker but is typically liked by people around her, as they know she generally means well. She is a big hit among kids who love her familiar snow-hawk and the tricks it can do/being able to ride her hawk as he can grow into a massive size.

Kuura: Very quiet and introverted one, he likes to spend time alone and wander around nature. He is always very kind and polite when speaking, and is the type to find joy in the smallest of things in life, like watching birds fly or having a butterfly land on his hand. He seems very oblivious, but is actually quite observant and notices things others often don't.

FUN FACTS

Aura's Hawk is named Ari (old norse for Eagle)

Varis' kids are named Aeron, Marlene and Caleb. His wife is called Lyna

Aura is bi, Kuura is gay, and Ilves & Varis are straight

Varis is the strongest out of them when it comes to magic power and variety in it, whereas Ilves is physically strongest, and Aura is fastest. Kuura in turn is stealthiest due to him being able to turn into icy mist cloud.

Their house is right at the edge of the forest opening the Life Tree stands at the center of. The house is a large Scandinavian style cottage and is also bigger on the inside than it seems on the outside

Aura wears her hair similarly to her niece Marlene, or rather Marlene wears it similarly to her

The family has had a long tradition of naming the kids using words or names from the mother's culture. Their mother is Finnish/has Finnish heritage, hence the Finnish word names. (She was the one who married into the family, whereas their dad was a Mirror-Realm native)

This is also why Varis' kids don't have Finnish names/words as their name, as per tradition names came from Lyna's side. (This is not a strict rule per say, but it is a tradition the family tends to follow, where at least kids' second names will be from the mom's culture if not the first names)

Their parents are actually both over a 100, but to average humans look to be only around 50-60 due to the whole "magic makes you age slower."

Their surname is ALSO a Finnish word and means "open/Spacious," indicating the family may have originated from Finland to begin with, or had someone from there change the family surname into this at some point for whatever reason. They don't really know nor does it really matter. (This is more of a meta-commentary about me, the creator of these characters being Finnish lol)

They have met Henrik, although Henrik has no clue his cousins are magical, even though his boyfriend is a literal witchboy too. (They haven't told him and are unaware of the said boyfriend lol)

my fave weirdo, Yoruga. I thought of making a brand new post, but then figured might as well put the update in this same post and reblog it instead.

Bio below:

Name: Yoruga Avara

Nicknames: Yoru-chan/Yoru (Hayden(former Cecil, Yuuji) Mothy (Youko) Koi (Roman, it means moth in Italian as he's from Italy)

Age: He died at 17, but is now 25, so he has existed in his new form for 8 years

Height: 164 cm

Family: He stayed with the keepers of his birth tree for a while (The Avara family), then moved to the Capital once he was emotionally and mentally stable enough to go and start his new life properly. He still uses his foster family surname as his official one, although he could've chosen himself a new one.

Friends: Hayden(Former Cecil) (his bestie), Yuuji (his boss) Avane (His boss' niece) Roman (his coworker) Claude (hayden/Cecil's twin brother) Caelan (Claude's boyfriend/son of Yuuji's LI) Iris (A sorceress who was also being fostered by the Avara family, is now a teacher in his university, though doesn't teach his classes)

Love interest: None (he’s Aro-ace)

Occupation: medical student (specializing in nutrition, which in this world covers more than just typical food things, given there are plenty of beings who do not eat "normal" food)/cafeteria seasonal worker

Personality:

Yoruga comes off like a goofy weirdo who everyone accepts just Does Things, and nobody questions it. Be it painting smileyfaces on random things and calling them “friends” or vibrating so rapidly he breaks whatever he’s sitting on. He's often compared to a cat with his mannerism and good stealth.

Beneath this childlike exterior however, exists a serious, cautious and always prepared fighting spirit, who also enjoys taunting his opponents and make them think they have the upper hand on him, before getting the rug pulled from under them so to speak. This comes from his rough childhood back as a human, resulting in somewhat survivalist tendencies.

He’s very protective over his best friend Cecil/Hayden and basically anyone he's close with, to the point when he switches to his more serious self, he can even come off scary.

Abilities:

His wings are fire- and stab-attack proof, and he can poof into hundreds of tiny black moths and reform himself back. Yoruga can also use these butterflies to blanket large areas into complete darkness

He has a supersonic scream that can shatter glass and rupture eardrums. Can even cause a heart-attack on weaker people

He’s very good at blending into shadows, and he can use his little butterflies to spy on people. Generally he's super stealthy, to the point he has to warn his coworker Roman beforehand about his presence, or the former mobster might accidentally attack him when startled.

Yoruga, like other moth spirits, has a pocket dimension to store things in. His is particularly big even among his kin, allowing him to store objects bigger than himself, and even engulf an area into his pocket dimension. He uses this both for transporting things (sometimes even people)

Yoruga's speed at utilizing his pocket is also unusually fast; normally when a moth spirit summons something from there, it forms out of glowing butterflies matching the spirit's colors. In Yoruga's case, it looks like he just pulls things out from inside his robes. (without them, it looks like he just pulls them from his body somehow)

WEAKNESSES:

Due to the way he died, Yoruga has always had some struggles around eating and food, and his first years in this new life, he suffered from bulimia due to his fear of suddenly starving again. Even now he can stress over having enough to eat and is sometimes at risk of relapsing to his old habits. He roomies with his best friend Cecil/Hayden for this reason, as he is a medical student so he can help/knows where to get help if things get worse.

He still struggles at times with living a life where he doesn't need to "survive" which does lead to occasional awkwardness in social situations, such as him being needlessly aggressive about his food/his loved one's meals, or perceiving things as a threat when they aren't.

FUN FACTS:

His foster family surname he still uses for official documents and such - Avara - is Finnish and means "open/spacious"

Yoruga likes chin scratches and might randomly ask some from people, typically his best friend Cecil/Hayden, Roman, or Youko's adoptive parents Shura and Shika. (Roman was weirded out at first, but is now used to his weird cat-like behavior)

His friendliness act is a survival tactic, where he feels the need to act as nice and harmless as possible to protect himself. It is a habit he still hasn't learned away from.

Generally, Yoruga's behavior changes between this taught, silly, almost catlike persona, to his more human/mature self. To the point even his voice and way of speaking changes depending on which side of himself he leans on.

He's kind of yandere-ish, seeming friendly but being very stabby stab if he has to.

Yoruga makes really excellent freakshakes (over-the-top milkshakes) though he's banned from making one for Youko before dinner, as the kid will get a massive sugar rush

Some people can see through his goofy facade, but react to it somewhat differently; his boss Yuuji, his boss' LI Jurou and Yuuji's niece find it amusing, whereas people like Yuuji's brother Kenzo find it interesting and have marked him as a person of interest, much to Yuuji's dismay

Yoruga sometimes jokes that the main reason his name references moths is because they ate his corpse. His sense of humor can be really dark at times in general.

He and Cecil often get up to Shenanigans in their free time, especially during Halloween they might go to the human world to spook people, as both are good at it.

His style is basically "Weird funky details mixed with cutesy childlike vibes"

He has worked in Yuuji's cafe for the last 2 summers as well as some seasonal work/covered shifts for Roman if able
