For Ace Week, I'm doing a series about how asexuality interacts with various other identities of mine, and the experiences I've had in the intersection of them.

Ace Week Day 3: Grew up in Massachusetts

There's no good word for "person from Massachusetts." The official word is "Bay Stater" but it sounds dumb. "Massechusettsan" is just clunky. "Masshole" is a frequent go-to but honestly it only properly refers to Greater Boston Area residents. So "from Massachusetts" it is.

I grew up just outside of Boston, easy to take public transit into the city. I volunteered at the Harvard Museums and visited the USS Constitution as a field trip every year, and my hometown was dotted with markers and memorials to events that kicked off the American Revolution. The maples turned red in the fall and the snow was always thick in the winter and the worst natural disasters we ever got were nor'easters, which overall weren't that bad.

I absorbed the ambivalent Massachusetts ideals of liberty & revolution and staid tradition, intellectual rigor and minding your own business. My town was liberal and broadly welcoming. I had gay and lesbian and bisexual friends in middle and high school who were out and proud about it, though it took me a while to realize why I felt like I belonged with them, because I assumed that I was probably straight, right? Well, maybe bi? Possibly gay? (I cycled through those identities a lot all through high school, none of them quite fitting right, but all of my friends were trying to figure out who they were and none of them were really dating, so I didn't feel too much pressure to decide.)

And in Massachusetts I started learning history. I learned about Louisa May Alcott, Henry David Thoreau, Mary Moody Emerson, people from the 1800s who never married and made their mark on the world as teachers, writers, philosophers, people deeply enmeshed in their local community of thinkers and writers in non-romantic non-marriage ways. I learned about how women in the 1700s who were married couldn't own property, but they could inherit their husbands' property if their husband died, and many women chose not to remarry in order to retain that economic freedom. I learned about the early 20th century idea of a Boston Marriage and went "Yes! That!"

I walked in the woods. I loved the woods. I went to college in a hippie town in the woods.

It's where I learned about the different ways that you can be alone and part of a community at the same time.

It was a house that once belonged to Ralph Waldo Emerson, that had connections to all those other transcendentalists too. Rescue Me-Chapter 10

A/N: This is it guys. The FINAL chapter of Rescue Me. I hope you all have enjoyed reading this story as much as I have had writing it. All the photos/gifs in this story have been images I have found on Google, except for the wedding one in this chapter. That is an original Miranda Austin (me) photograph. Not to brag but, well yea I’m bragging because I love that picture. hehehe.

Standing at my front window, I watch the snow fall; adding to the layer of powder already covering the ground. Dean had had to run to the Bunker to meet up with the HVAC technician when Brad called to inform him that the furnace wasn’t working. I stayed back to stay warm and finish dinner that we were in the middle of making when the call came in.

Behind me stood a massive Douglas fir, lights blinking and twinkling in the early evening light. Dean and I, along with Sam and his girlfriend Jess had decorated it together last weekend. The evergreen was so tall that even Sam had used a step ladder to get the star on top. Dean and his brother had also braved the frigid winter air to hang decorations outside, to get into the spirit. Christmas is the day after tomorrow and it has always been my favorite holiday.

The tracks in the driveway from the Impala, Dean’s cherished Baby, was quickly being hidden with the new precipitation. I watch and pray that he makes it safely back home. The Impala, as beautiful a car as she is, isn’t really made for slick, icy roads. The timer on the oven beeps, taking me away from the window and the wonderland outside.

Taking the casserole out of the oven my engagement ring and wedding band catch my eye. I still can’t believe that after all these years Dean Winchester is my husband. I am a Winchester. I have been in love with him since I was a little girl in pigtails and now have been married to him going on seven months. I sit the casserole on the counter and reminisce about that day in May.

The morning sun filtered through the windows as I rushed around trying to make sure everything had been taken care of. Each arrangement had a stargazer seated in the middle to bring in the red and pinks of the potted flowers that sat on logs alongside.

By the time the ceremony was set to begin, not a cloud was in the sky and the sun shone brightly’ almost as if it’s rays were directed right at the spot where Dean and I would exchange vows. Everyone was in place and it was time for me to walk down the makeshift aisle. Since my own father had long since passed and I had been on my own, I escorted myself. I don’t remember much from the time my eyes met Dean’s until the moment he began his vows.

“We've been best friends for years. I've know you so long I can hardly remember a time when you weren't by my side. If it wasn't for you my life would be in a much darker place. You rescued me when I was going down a road I never would've made it back from. You helped me see what a spiraling mess I had became and pulled me back from the edge. If it wasn't for your friendship, your love I would have lost everything. You helped get me back on track, helped keep me from losing the bar, kept me from going to jail. You have done so much for me and I can never thank you enough, never show you just how much all that meant to me, but I promise to spend the rest of my life trying."

The tears ran down my face as I listened to him promise to live his life loving and protecting me. I couldn’t control them even as I spoke mine.

“Dean, I have loved you every day since I was seven years old and you shared your cookies with me. We have seen the best and the worst of each other and still seem to come back to one another. When I moved away, I thought I had lost my best friend but from the moment I sat foot back in town, I knew. I knew that you would be right here, by my side through it all. I love you so very much and I will spend the rest of my life showing you.”

“What are you thinking about beautiful?” Dean asks, bringing me back to the present. I was so into my daydream I hadn’t heard him pull up or even enter the house. I look over at him, leaning in the doorway between the kitchen and den and smile. My husband, I think to myself. He looks like a dream, even with flakes of snow stuck to the styled, spiky hair on his head.

“Our wedding day,” I answer walking toward him to hug him to me.

“Best day of my life,” he chuckles. “I got the girl.”

“Yes you did.” I tip toe and kiss his cold lips. “Let’s eat.”

After dinner, we sit in the front room with all the lights out, except for the tree. I look over at all the presents underneath, knowing that there is one there that I am dying to open. Dean had been secretive and had it wrapped and placed beneath the tree before I even knew. It wasn’t very large, just a regular shaped box that anything could be in. But the suspense was killing me!

“Babe?” I ask as we watch the lights sparkle.

“Yea?”

“I know it’s not time yet,” I begin, turning to look at him. “But can we start a tradition? We open one gift each on the day before Christmas.”

Dean chuckles and looks at his watch. “Well it is Christmas eve.”

I jump up and go grab the package, plus one that his name was on and join him back on the sofa. I hand him his and he sits it on his lap, watching as I rip into mine. Inside is a set of 5 coins, in a collage frame, each with a date engraved on them. Dean points to each one, explaining the dates. “July 14, 1988 the day we met and shared my bag of cookies; August 28, 2004 the day you came back to town after what I call the biggest mistake you ever made.” I giggle at him and he smirks before continuing. “November 6, 2008 the day I got the balls to do what I’d wanted to do for a while. Which now that I say that out loud makes me sound like a perv.”

“Wait, what was November 6?” I ask, confused.

“The day you had the water leak and I let you stay with me,” he explains, running a hand across the back of his neck. “That night we slept together.” I look at him shocked.

“You remember the date?”

“Never gonna forget it baby,” he says as he leans over and kisses my lips.

:Such a sap,” I joke. “So finish telling me what these others are.”

“May 27, 2009 our wedding date. Like I said, best day of my life. And this one,” he points to the last one, engraved September 15, 2009. It a little different than the others. “This one is my one year sobriety. It has been one year, 3 months and 9 days since I took my last drink.”

I let the tears fall as I look between the coin and him. “Dean, that’s wonderful. I am so proud of you!” I throw my arms around his neck and hug him tight. Leaning back, I gesture toward his gift.

“Who knew I would give you a gift that will kind of go along with this?”

Dean looks at me puzzled as he pulls the bow off the box and opens the lid.

“We going to have to get another coin. December 22, 2009.The day I found out we’re having a baby!”

“Wha--”

“In a little over six months, you’re going to be a father,” I say to Dean’s shocked expression, smiling happily.

The half-opened gift flew through the air as he grabbed me and tugged my body to his, squeezing tightly.

SIX YEARS LATER

I watch as my daughter runs along the playground, flitting from the swings to the slide and back before going over to a bench and sitting down beside a little boy who, from all looks of it, was shy and bashful. Adrianna Parker Winchester pulls a baggie of cookies from her knapsack, offering him one. Dean said in his vows that I had rescued him but watching his daughter reenact our first encounter, I smile as I realized Dean rescued me first, all those years ago.
