trying to make a list of 70’s to early 80’s proto-yuri, if anyone knows about other works please lemme know so I can add them ^_^

Ichijo is falling in love with Mahiro but Mahiro has loved him for a long time but Ichijo seems to be so oblivious to his own feelings that he might have loved Mahiro almost as long... I do enjoy these two, especially Ichijo who's slowly turning out to be a better and better person (the awkward hug at the start of the episode turning into him preventing another hug because he has every reason to believe Mahiro doesn't like hugs but also jealousy just perfectly encapsulates how he approaches the world and his own feelings.)

(Kyoya x Male Reader)

Chapter four

-Attack Of The Lady Manger!-

The entire host club was dressed in samurai attire, the guests swooned and sighed, Hikaru and Kaoru annoying Haruhi, while Tamaki fussed over her.

With Y/n and Kyoya watching from the sidelines.

It all felt like the usual formula for the club.

However a new face comes to disturb the balance.

A dirty blonde girl peeked through the club's door, her brown doe eyes staring at the club. Of course this doesn’t come unnoticed.

“Looks like the host club has a brand new guest.” The twins walk towards the girl.

“-come on in. What are you waiting for?” Kaoru, and Hikaru both hold red roses towards the girl.

“Watching from afar is no fun.” Hikaru cooed.

“Please miss?” They spoke in unison, then came Tamaki, sauntering towards them.

“Stop that. How many times do I have to tell you boys to be more courteous to our first time guest?” Tamaki now holds a similar rose towards the girl as well.

“Please, you don’t have to be afraid, my princess. I welcome you to the Ouran host club!”

“No! Don’t touch me! You’re a phony!” The girl shirked.

“Uh… What do you mean, I’m a phony?” Tamaki was quite shocked at the girl.

“Just what I said, you’re a phony! I find it hard to believe that someone like you is the prince character of this host club! You shouldn’t spread your love so easily like that, are you stupid! You must be a dimwitted narcissist! You’re incompetent! You’re a commoner! You’re disgusting!” She spoke, each word stabbing deeper each time. He began slowly falling in dramatic fashion.

“He's created a new technique!” Hikaru spoke.

“-one man slow motion.”

Kyoya looks at the girl.

“I don’t suppose you are-“

She rushes over to kyoya nearly pushing over Y/n, just to get to him.

“Ah! It’s you, Kyoya! Oh how I’ve longed to meet you! My one and only Prince Charming.” She dreamily spoke, leaving an array of shock and confusion amongst the group.

“Hold on, finance?” Y/n turned to look at Kyoya, who held little reaction.

“Of course. My name is Renge Houshakuji! And I’m transferring into Ouran academy’s first year, class A, tomorrow,”

Tamaki is now crouching in a corner.

“Why is he sulking?” Hikaru questioned.

“Because mommy was keeping a secret from daddy.” Kaoru simply responded.

“Why does everyone keep referring to us like we’re husband and wife?” Kyoya spoke ignoring the pressing issue at hand, or rather next to him.

“Because you guys are.” Y/n spoke, glaring at Renge.

“Ours is a story of love at first sight! I couldn’t resist the way you were adoring those flowers in the backyard when you thought no one was looking. How sweet it was when you reached out to help that poor little injured kitten.” She spoke starry eyed, leaving the host club more confused.

Y/n was weirdly familiar of the story but couldn’t yet place where.

“She serious.” The twins said, losing belief in Renges tale.

“Could you have the wrong person?” Haruhi found it hard to believe Kyoya would do anything of the sort.

“No way! I could recognize my love anywhere! He’s a gentle man, who’s kind to everyone and doesn’t ask for anything in return! He likes solitude, but he in fact sometimes does get lonely.” She ranted, while the twins grew more shocked.

“He looks like the star of a popular dating sim, Uki-Doki Memorial! You’re a real life Ichijo Miyabi!” She pointed to Kyoya.

“Otaku?” Tamaki muttered.

“Oh that’s why it’s so familiar! I loved playing that game-…” Y/n spoke in excitement.

“Ahem, I mean… I’ve heard of the game.” He spoke looking to the side.

“Not you too.” Hikaru spoke towards Y/n.

“I get it now you're in love with the character.” Kyoya began looking blandly at the girl.

“You’re projecting that love onto me and you’ve somehow believed it yourself that somehow we’re engaged. I assume this Miyabi character also wears glasses as well.” He spoke, a sense of relief that fell over the club.

“So she made it up. You’re not really her fiancée, right?” Tamaki looked towards Kyoya.

“Well no, I don’t remember ever asking for her hand in marriage. Besides, this is the first time I’ve ever met this woman.”

Renge speaks to Kyoya ignoring the rest of the club.

“According to my research, I understand that you’re in charge of managing the club. Is that true kyoya?”

“That’s right! Kyo-chan is our director!” Honey spoke.

“You’re the club’s director, that's perfect! Oh wow I’ve always wanted to wear a sandwich board to advertise a business!” She excitedly moved around.

“We don’t advertise. We’re just a host club.” The twins blandly spoke.

“We probably should, shouldn’t we?” Y/n turned to look at twins.

“I’ve made up my mind from now on I’m gonna be the manager of this host club!” Renge spoke, with the annoyance of the twins.

Y/n moves to kyoya.

“Uh hey, listen kyoya.”

Kyoya looks at Y/n before continuing writing in his black notebook.

“Miss Houshakoji is the only daughter of a very important Ootori family client, so please be polite and try not to offend her, alright?” Kyoya answered.

Y/n hums in agreement.

“Well boys, I can’t wait to work with you!”

The next day rolls around, and everyone is now back at The club.

“I thought about it last night and maybe having a lady manager isn’t such a bad idea.” Tamaki spoked.

“Why do you say that?” The twins asked.

“Well it’s fairly obvious isn’t it? Renge just transferred into the same class as Haruhi. So, if Haruhi has a girlfriend around it could bring out the female within her. Renge’s girlish ere of tenderness might be able to stimulate Haruhi’s own sense of femininity.” Tamaki rants.

“Good grief.” The twins sighed at the prince's antics.

“Now’s a chance to help Haruhi get in touch with her feminine side. This is an important project, men! She doesn’t have any friends in class right now, except for those two shady twins. That’s no good for her!” Tamaki goes on unwantedly.

“It feels like I’m talking to my mother.” Y/n muttered.

“Like you have room to talk!” The twins look like they’re gonna fight.

A voice booms across the club.

“Hey everyone!” Renge yells, holding a container.

“You’ll be happy to know that your new manager, Renge, has baked all of you some cookies!” She spoke gleefully.

Y/n turns to Renge.

“Oh swee-“

Tamaki buts in.

“Ah! Isn’t she ladylike! I’m so moved by your generosity.”

“I didn’t bake these cookies for you phony prince!” She scolded Tamaki, before rushing towards Kyoya.

“I’m sorry I burnt them a little bit. I did the best I could, and I already know what you’re gonna say!” She spoke before daydreaming of her dating sim.

Honey grabbed a cookie while Renge was distracted, and took a bite.

“She wasn’t kidding, these cookies are really burned.”

Mori immediately took the cookie from honey.

“Don’t eat that Mitsukuni, it's bad for you.”

Renge yells in embarrassment, scaring the small blonde.

Among the chaos Haruhi takes a cookie as well and eats it.

“They’re not bad at all, they’ve got a good flavor to them.”

Her face slightly messy from the cookie, left an idea in the twins head.

“May I try?” Hikaru whispered, tilting Haruhi’s head up to take a bite of the cookie.

“Uh oh Haruhi. You’ve got crumbs on your face.” Kaoru stated before moving closer to lick the crumbs off her face.

Tamaki is now fuming.

“Did you see what they just did! He took a bite of it while it was in her mouth! The other one licked her face. I told you they’re shady twins! They can’t be trusted! They tried to seduce her!” Tamaki shirks.

“And suddenly the trio of classmates are closer than before.” Kyoya teased, causing Y/n to chuckle.

“Looks like Tamaki has competition.” Y/n spoke through laughter.

“You know, you could’ve just told me and I would have wiped it off. And if you wanted to try one there’s plenty here.” She gestured to the container.

“That’s not the way you’re supposed to react Haruhi! You have to stay strong and reject them, then causally brush them to the side! Do you understand!” Tamaki scolded Haruhi, pulling her away from the twins.

“This is sexual harassment senpai.” She told the blonde.

“Sexual harassment! If this counts as sexual harassment then they’re twice as guilty! Someone called the police!” Tamaki spoke, annoying the twins.

“Cut it out boss, we’re sorry.”

Y/n pulls Tamaki away from Haruhi.

“Stop bugging Haruhi.” Y/n sternly told Tamaki.

“But-“

“Luke warm.” Renge grumbled.

“What?” Y/n turns towards the angered girl.

“Every single one of you! Except Kyoya, all of your characters are lukewarm! Each of you needs some sort of dark side, you understand? Girls are vulnerable to handsome young men who are troubled. If you keep carrying on like this, it’s only a matter of time before the girls grow tired of you and stop coming all together.” She yelled, throwing everyone for aloop.

“Are you trying to ruin my precious Kyoya’s business? As your manager it’s my duty to change your character backgrounds.” She turns to look at Honey and points at him.

“Let’s start with you.”

Surprising the small blonde.

“If all you are is cute on the outside and cute on the inside then you're no different from a baby!” She tore into Honey with no remorse.

“From now on you are the baby-faced thug!”

She points to Mori.

“And Mori-senpai, you’re his childhood flunkie.”

She turns to the twins.

“The twins basketball players who are enslaved in their world.”

Next is Haruhi.

“Haruhi, you’re an honor student who’s constantly getting bullied.”

“And for you Tamaki, you’re the school idol who is admired for your good looks but you actually have an inferiority complex hiding from the world. The lonely prince.” She eagerly turns to Kyoya.

“Ah and kyoya you're perfect just the way you are now. So I want you to stay as kind and affectionate as ever, kay?” She smiled.

“Thank you, I’m honored.” He politely smiled.

The whole interaction left a bitter taste in Y/n’s mouth.

“What about me?” He asked.

Renge turns her head towards the male.

“What about You?” She spoke. annoyed with getting interrupted.

“My role.” Y/n dryly replies.

“Oh right…” she muttered, looking up and down at the male.

“Fine then, closeted gay best friend.”

“I-.. alright then.” Y/n walks away from the two.

Hikaru grabs Kyoya's attention.

“Come on Kyoya senpai!”

“You’ve gotta do something.” Kaoru begs.

“Why? Seems like the boss is up for it.”

The twins turn to see the blonde strutting and posing, imitating a lonely prince.

“How does this look Renge? Do these poses work for a lonely prince?” He muttered.

“Oh wow you’re pretty good at that, but it would be more effective in the rain.”

“Let’s just wait and see how this turns out. I bet it’ll be interesting. It always is.” Kyoya spoke, with a small smirk.

The next day, the back of the school is covered in movie cameras, the staff rushed back and forth to set up new sets. And with Renge barking orders with a microphone, of course taking the role of director for this movie shoot.

As it goes on the club re-enacts the script for the camera. With the lack of Y/n who is no longer part of the movie due to… creative discourse with the director.

His new job is basically just an intern, Grabbing food and drinks for anyone.

It’s now break time for everyone.

“How did we go from changing characters to shooting a movie about it?” Hikaru states.

“And why is there an entire film crew here to shoot it?” Kaoru adds in.

“Apparently, she flew them in from Hollywood. Don’t you recognize the director? He directed the vampire movie, Millennium Snow. It was number one in the grossing box office hit in the past year.” Kyoya answered simply.

“And another thing, how come this stupid script portrays Kaoru as the pitcher.” Hikaru complains

“Yeah.”

“What does that mean?” Haruhi spoke puzzled at their wording.

Y/n starts laughing.

“If you don’t know then never mind.” The twins responded.

Y/n turns to Haruhi still giggling.

“It- its. When two people love each other- pfftt.” Y/n could barely get through the explanation.

“I don’t get it.” Haruhi who is now more confused than before.

“Pitcher?” She muttered.

In comes the lonely prince.

“Haruhi! So how was I? Did you like my performance?” He spoke with a cheerful tone, head covered by a white towel.

“It was pretty awesome. I’m surprised you were able to get into your character like that. You were really believable.” She praised The prince.

“I’ve discovered a new darker side of myself, I’m starting to think it might be a good idea to explore it. Hm..” Tamaki spoke.

“Are you sure about that? Because I think you’re fine just the way you are Tamaki senpai.” This statement causes the blonde to flush beet red and look away, averting his gaze.

“Uh.. you do? Well, if you say so, Haruhi.” He muttered.

Y/n hums, and smiles, at the sight.

“Hey Haruhi! You’re on!” Renge yelled.

“Coming!” Haruhi quickly responds.

“Over here! These gentlemen just agreed to make a special appearance in our film!” She spoke excitedly.

Behind her were two intimidating men with clearly raging daddy issues.

Y/n watches Renge explain the next shot. He tilts his head towards Kyoya.

“That’s not gonna end well.” Y/n tiredly states. Kyoya smiles In amusement.

“Whatever do you mean?”

Y/n just blankly stared at the male, before Kyoya side glanced Y/n

“We’ll just have to see what happens.” He spoked.

And as luck would have it the shot went wrong , the two men being stereotyped provoking them causing Haruhi to take the hit, his back hitting the hard brick wall, causing her to hunch over with her eyes tearing up.

Tamaki saw what was happening and pushed one of the guys up to the wall.

“Which one of you jerks started it?” He spoke through gritted teeth.

“You know sometimes I wish I was wrong.”

Y/n spoke, with no reaction to the fight.

“You were pretty convinced I was engaged with Renge.”

“Confused is a better way to describe it, and also that it’s not all that common for arranged marriages to happen out of the blue.” Y/n spoked, not really sure why he was so bothered.

“If you say so.”

“You, please tell me you got that camera man!” Renge spoke.

“Other than the contact, that final scene was ideal! All it needs now is a moving narration by my sweet Kyoya!”

But before she could get a head of herself a harsh glass shattered got her attention. She turned around to see Kyoya holding a rock to a now smashed camera lense.

“Why did you do that to my camera!” The guy yelled.

“What is wrong?” Renge asked, practically given a kicked puppy look.

“I’m terribly sorry I cannot allow there to be any record of a club member engaging in violence.” He narrowed his eyes at Renge.

“I think you’ve caused enough trouble around here Renge, please stop being such a pest.” He spoke bitterly, poisoning his ‘polite’ attitude.

Y/n is staring at kyoya. Simply mesmerized by his actions.

“A-a pest! But you’re supposed to pat me on the head and tell me not to worry! You’re supposed to be kind and affectionate Kyoya! Why are you acting so differently now? Tell me why!” Her heart sinking in her chest.

“Because that’s not the real Kyoya.” Tamaki spoke behind her.

“Huh?” Renge is still processing The news.

“Does it really matter? Who cares if Kyoya is a little different than what you expect him to be. Take a good look at the person inside and get to know them little by little. It's a lot more fun that way.” Haruhi spoke honestly, tugging on everyone’s heart strings.

As the day ended, and the camera left as quickly as they came, the hosts went to their respective homes, leaving Y/n and Kyoya in the host club room. Y/n sitting cross legged on the ground working on his science homework, while Kyoya typed away on his computer.

The sunset leaves a comfortable warm color to everything it touches.

“You know you don’t have to stay after club hours with me Y/n.” He calmly spoke, still looking at the screen.

“I am aware of Kyoya, but I needed to work on homework anyways.” Y/n sighs and leans on the front of the sofa Kyoya was currently working on.

“And besides. What would you ever do without, little old me, by your side.” Y/n teased, while stretching his back at a poor attempt to fix years of bad posture.

“Most likely finishing my work faster.” He muttered before going back into his work.

“What are you even working on this time kyoya.” Y/n asked, science homework completely discarded now.

“I’m editing Renge’s movie project.”

Y/n stood up from his rightful place on the ground and looked at kyoya’s screen.

“Wow, that crew truly did a good job.” Y/n said. Leaning closer to see better.

“What else would you expect from a Hollywood production team?”

“Still can’t believe you broke that guy’s camera.” Y/n smirked before sitting down next to Kyoya.

“I mean, now that I think of it, that does seem like something you would do.”

Kyoya paused briefly before talking.

“What do you mean?”

“Well you breaking the camera lenses felt very on brand. I can't really explain it.” Y/n looked around as if physically searching for the right words.

“It’s just everything you do, especially when an issue arises you always seem to quickly and efficiently tear it down as fast as it comes. You know?” Y/n quickly paused before slightly flushed.

“Sorry, I'm rambling haven’t I?It's probably annoying to hear.” Y/n stammered, feeling guilty for talking for too long.

“No need for apologies, I don’t mind it at all.” Kyoya mumbled, focussing on the laptop.

Y/n sighed, and packed up his bag.

“It’s getting late, I should go home.” Muttered stuffing his bag haphazardly into his bag.

As he gets to the doorway he turns to look at Kyoya.

“Can I ask you one thing?”

Kyoya looks up from the laptop.

“What do you need?” He questioned.

“Try not to drive yourself mad with work again, I'd rather not deal with the club on my own.” Y/n joked with some underlying truth.

Kyoya smiled.

“You have nothing to worry about, and besides, I've been finished for a while.”

Y/n stood still for a moment before chuckling.

“You truly are a work of art, aren’t you kyoya?” He grinned and left Kyoya alone in the room with a small smile on his face.

The next day arises and the club seems to be more packed than usual.

“I bought the film you made!” One girl spoked

“I bought it too!”

Tamaki, now confused, asked one of the girls.

“You did?”

“That scene in the rain was just phenomenal!”

Tamaki turns to Kyoya.

“Kyoya?”

“I may have broken the camera's lens but the footage that was already shot wasn’t damaged. But naturally I did cut that one violent scene. Sales have been pretty good so far, and the Hollywood team did a fantastic job. But that is to be expected.”

“So this is what you meant by interesting.” The twins spoke.

“It’s best to have as much money we can have in the club’s budget.” Kyoya spoke casually in his notebook.

“What else would you expect from kyoya?” Y/n joked.

“Good day everyone.” Renge spoke.

“Wait, I thought you left for France by now.” Y/n asked

Renge starts going on a rant that lasted longer than needed, however it ended in Renge confessing to Haruhi, which no one expected even Haruhi.

“Come on Haruhi, let’s go to my house and play some games together! I think it’s time you get to know me better.” She spoke swiftly, dragging Haruhi away.

Of course once again Tamaki was less than pleased at this reveal.

“But I thought you wanted Haruhi to have Haruhi have a friend, to embrace her ‘femininity’ and what not.” Y/n looks at the blonde.

“Well a female companion, not a girlfriend!” He spoke.

Proof of Growth (Migi & Dali Thought)

I wanted to unpack this scene that I really liked from Episode 10 of the Migi & Dali anime.

As always, *spoiler* warning!

To give some context, the twins plus Maruta attempt to infiltrate the Ichijo house by crossing a rope bridge from a tree branch. The branch is not sturdy as they hoped, and it snapped before Dali was able to get across. As Dali was frozen in panic, Migi instinctively saved his brother using the rope-counterweight method from their past experiences. Dali was astonished at this, but then quickly turns away and quips that Migi got fat. Migi is peeved by this as Dali hides a warm expression, and then the two climb up, with Migi teasing that his growth spurt came first, to which Dali brushes away with a "whatever".

First, I wonder if Dali was actually right about Migi getting fat/heavier, or if he was just lying or making something up, which is definitely in character for Dali. I might not be the best at physics, but perhaps the difference in the positions is not due to a difference in their weights, but rather something else (maybe where they grabbed the rope?). Besides, if Migi is actually heavier, then I think a more likely cause is that Dali may have lost weight recently. After all, I can't imagine that he'd maintain his weight due to his recent unhealthy habits (e.g. eating and throwing up, being bedridden for several days).

Anyway, the specifics aren't important. What's important is that Migi has come a long way from the child he was before that could do nothing but rely on Dali. He's come to realize Dali's pain, and in order to truly help Dali and lift his suffering, he needs to be able to stand by Dali's side as an equal rather than be below him, and to become "strong" enough so that Dali can rely on and put his trust in him. His promise to bring Dali back home weren't just empty words, he truly has grown from the baby he was at the start of the story to a proper younger twin that can provide the help that Dali needs, shown by how he is literally supporting Dali. I'm sure Dali knows this too, given his surprised reaction as well as his warm expression that he hid, which shows that he was definitely touched by Migi's act of courage and love and was proud of his younger brother.

That being said, Dali still has his pride as the older brother, so he can't just admit that he got saved, otherwise he'll seem weak. That's why he had to hide his face and quickly come up with some quip or insult to catch Migi off-guard. Since Migi isn't exactly the brightest bulb, he easily falls into Dali's verbal trap and gets distracted by the "fat" comment. He even tries to make a comeback with the "growth spurt" comment, which barely gets a reaction from Dali. Had he said something like, "Looks like your little bro saved your butt this time!" I'm sure Dali would have really been humbled and would have lost this exchange. I guess this goes to show that Migi will always remain the little brother in this relationship.

Perhaps Migi didn't have an actual growth spurt, but he has certainly grown where it really matters, and Dali couldn't be happier to see this. Because now, Dali no longer stood alone, as he now had a brother that can stand by his side as an equal, and one that he can rely on just as Migi relied on him.

Hello! Sorry this reply is coming so late, I suspect you might have totally forgotten you even sent it... I'm looking through my inbox for the first time in a while trying to reply to anything that looks reply-able (in the sense that I have enough brain power to process a semi-coherent answer).

My criticism of Shojo Beat is two-fold: my general criticism of Viz extending to Shojo Beat, and a more petty dislike for how Shojo Beat has communicated to its fans in the past, chiefly here on tumblr and on twitter.

While I respect Viz for a lot of things, and will stand by my opinion that it is the best publisher of manga in existence in the US, I also habor a lot of ill will towards how... limited its licinsing is. I'm pretty sure I've complained about this before, but basically they could do so much for manga publishing but they choose not to. Just off the top of my head, prominent and historically important shojo artists that Shojo Beat/Viz could license easily: Ichijo Yukari. Yamagishi Ryoko. Oshima Yumiko. Yamato Waki. Ikeda Riyoko. Kuramochi Fusako. Ikuemi Ryo. Tsumugi Taku. Mizuno Hideko. Yashiro Masako. Maki Miyako. And an endless list of shojo artists who are important to the history of the manga medium. Many of these artists might not turn a profit in English, granted, but I genuinely believe that publishers have a social obligation to make historically and culturally significant works of art available for the public. I think Viz/Shojo Beat fail in this obligation utterly.

Their social media was (is? I don't look at it anymore) so utterly condescending and snotty towards fans, omg? This is related to the above point, but when fans request especially older and more obscure titles the only response they give is a snotty "well then maybe you should spend money on what we already publish, if it makes money we might consider publishing more like it~" and I'm like true, we are living in a capitalist society, but that answer is basically bullshit because Shojo Beat has never shown any indication of being interested in publishing anything that falls outside of its very, very narrow niche. So if I buy all volumes of Vampire Knight you'll publish Tokimeki Tonight? lol fat chance, I do not believe that for a single minute. So their social media honestly pisses me off!

Takuma Ichijo Headcanon- His Relationship with Media & Entertainment

-Enjoys BBC detectives. They're his go-to source for detective tv shows. Considering they pioneered the genre, he is quite the snob who prefers these over shows from the US (unless it's BBC America, he gives shows coming from them a pass). -He enjoys classics like Monsieur Pierrot to modern BBC detectives like George Gently. -Has read all things Agatha Christie ever wrote. -Owns all the DVD boxes of the shows he likes. -Even owns DVDs of the obscure BBC movies that fit in the detective genre like The Thirteenth Tale. -It introduced him to newer names that weren't highly popular and mainstream, such as the author Diane Setterfield. -Mysteries surrounding family dramas intrigue him the most, because it reminds him of home and he actually appreciates navigating his own life through the characters from his books. -Especially if the protagonist is the son or daughter navigating themselves through family relates mysteries. -Don't underestimate the power of relatibility, as a young kid and dealing with a friend like Kaname, mystery books seemed more real to him then slice of life kind of stories. -That scene where he tries to solve the mystery of Aido by trying to link it to a detective he's reading was young Takuma 24/7. Like, he tried to find hidden clues that would help him understand things better at a pretty young age. -With his father being an actor, he gets free access to detectives his father is starring in before they even hit the cinemas. -His father also gifts him extras from set. -Its his primary bonding method with his father, considering Takuma is much closer to his mom. -Which is also how he befriended Senri. The last acting gig that Senri's mom did was a movie with Takuma's father and he was supportive towards her when she fell pregnant during filming. The boys have been having playdates since they were babies. -Their mutual love for Rakugo also comes from having met through the industry and vaguely falling in with other celebrity children. They have been performing their own little routines for their parents since childhood. -Once Senri befriended Rima, she started doing their costumes. -They have a couple of home videos of their performances too. -Once, Takuma even wrote a song for a skit, and Senri said he has the same lyrical sense as the Headmaster. -Eventually, he did write a couple of books, including Aido's memoires before he retired as a simple bookshop owner.

Anyways. I'm going to talk about my first P4 arcana swap, known as the Lovers Naoto au

The end of this will have a list of the Arcana incase things aren't clear

Kanji Tatsumi has been living with his older brother since his dad died and mom entered assisted living, but when his brother has to go overseas for a year for his job, Kanji is sent to live in their old hometown with an old family friend

Daidara isn't bothered having Kanji around, as long as he doesn't act out. He doesn't mind what he does, though when the kid shows interest in crafting, although with fabric, he's happy to spend the odd night teaching him about the value his labour and love places in his products

He's only a first year, and ends up sitting beside this bored girl with pigtails. When he compliments her nails and asks if she did them herself, well, they click. She's used to just being hit on, and he's happy to have a friend who, gets him. They walk home together, though they pause when they see police tape

Two boys are walking home the same way, one tries to ask Rise out again, and fails. The other apologizes, introduces himself as Yu Narukami, and the other as Yosuke Hanamura. Yu's uncle shooes them all away, and Yosuke mutters about having to go play manager for the night

A few days go by, and a third year dies. Apparently, Saki Konishi worked with Yosuke. Yu gets worried. Kanji's hand goes through a TV, and Rise and Yu watch him try to punch a TV in Junes

They all fall through.

They wander around, find a haunting room, and when they make their way back to the start, a Bear. Teddie let's them leave, and they don't exactly plan to go back

Only, Rise insists they do. They find a glass version of her in there, who talks about how she despises how they look and talk about her. That she wants to run away and be nobody

Kanji defeats a monster, and Rise gets her Persona too. He hugs her tightly, his chair and her crossbow tossed aside for a moment

Yosuke goes missing.

On TV the night before, Kanji sees him. He's dressed like a king almost, talks about how for once, everyone's going to see him and do what he wants!

So they go back into the TV. Yu runs off ahead, and when they catch up with him, his shadow is there, spouting that deep down, Yosuke disgusts him. How he hates the way he talks about their classmates, and how he keeps him around to look Better

Yu admits, after, that it's partially true. But he doesn't fully hate him, cause he's been in love with his best friend for a few years. Kanji and Rise pat his shoulders

They do save Yosuke, who laments not being saved by a beautiful girl. Yu volunteers to carry him home. Neither talk about how Yu interrupted the shadow of his best friend to shout about how he cared how Yosuke felt, he'd willingly give up his nights to help if needed

Things are normal for a little while.

Kanji makes some friends. Naoki Konishi, who skips school sometimes. Yumi Ozawa, who barges into the Home Ec club to demand they help the Drama club with costumes. Yu's cousin Nanako, who loves the dolls he makes. Ai Ebihara, who's lost and doesn't know who she really is. Kou Ichijo, a second year who doesn't understand why reading is so hard. Daisuke Nagase, who wants to be a good leader.

He works at the hospital where his dad died. An old lady talks to him about her life, and a nurse is, weird.

Yu and Yosuke mention a classmate of theirs that they're worried for. Yukiko Amagi was on the news for getting into a fight with some news crew trying to get footage of the "haunted" Amagi Inn.

Yukiko appears on TV. She's, in a white dress. Calls herself the ghost of the Inn, daring any "suitors" to end her grief and arrive for their Wedding

Before she disappeared, they saw her talk to a girl none of them knew. They didn't hear the conversation, but Yukiko yelled at them and they ran

They save her. She tags along for the investigation

Then, Rise shows up to homeroom one morning and freaks out. Her favourite idol group, ROYAL, is taking a break. And her favourite member, Prince, the sole boy, is coming to Inaba

She drags the boys and Yukiko to the bookstore in the shopping district to try to see if they can meet him, and they barely get a moment to chat with a quiet, well mannered Naoto Shirogane. He looks tired, worn down.

The girl that spoke to Yukiko is outside talking to the cops. Chie Satonaka, a young action movie star, who used to live in Inaba. Here to study how the cops handle the case for her next role

Naoto goes missing, appears on TV. He's dressed in the outfits his female counterparts wear on stage, and it's jarring to look at. He invites the viewers to stick around to learn the truth behind their so-called "Prince"

So the gang goes to save him, but they need more clues. His fellow idols appear on day 2, and offer little bits about him. One stays behind, and softly admits that Naoto's been struggling with his appearance and identity for a while. The idol, Knight, begs them to find him

And they do. Shadow Naoto outs him as trans, and once defeated, Naoto shakily tells them about how his break is because a camera was found in the girl's change rooms. His agency holds his transition hostage in his contract. He fears returning to the stage as is

More plot shit happens. You know the drill. Then, Chie tries to talk to them, and Yukiko kinda, blows her off. Tells her this is real to them, not some, role

Chie does an interview. Goes missing. Her shadow is dressed like a kung fu hero, calls herself a fraud

It's revealed the reason she came home was because she met her idol, who called her some nasty names. Said she was making a mockery of martial arts. She remembered being a kid and promising to be Yukiko's knight, and how as kids they wanted to get married one day

The timing was all wrong, and she softly confesses that she knows her idol was right. She's, nothing, really. But, she wants to help them find the killer. So she can actually do something

Hmmmm. Maybe I will get my clothed Mahiro/naked Ichijo dining fantasy after all 👀 (Mahiro's fantasy!!)

Short seme! Short seme! I love it.

I've been trying to figure out if the seme/uke roles were going to be applied in anyway to these two. I was pretty sure Ichijo was not the seme, but couldn't tell if they'd just drop them altogether. But with that sleep kiss (which was cut before the actual kiss and I'm guessing Mahiro will abort before contact) it seems like he's going to be taking on the seme role, albeit a mild version. And if Ichijo is anything he has to be the uke, given he's the pov character.

I like the way this show uses tropes. None of the people feel like tropes, but the show is incorporating all sorts of tropey moments. But it makes them slightly more realistic, slightly more grounded, in a way i enjoy. Like the baby-is-a-messy-eater being a cilantro leaf Ichijo casually wiped off Mahiro's cheek (and then ate!!). Or how Ichijo falls asleep near Mahiro's shoulder, not on it.

“Maya’s Funeral Procession” / “Maya No Souretsu” (1972) by Yukari Ichijo

Status: Finished, Volumes: 1, Chapters: 4

Synopsis: On the way to her family’s country house Reina spots the mysterious and alluring Maya, whom she quickly falls under the spell of. As secrets of Reina and Maya’s pasts surface their future seems less and less certain.

Review: “Maya’s Funeral Procession'' is a delectable early 1970’s Shoujo drama that captures it’s thrilling story through strikingly severe visuals. This manga is one of the works that helped establish and reinforce early Yuri tropes, yet it still has much to offer as a succinct and fast paced melodrama beyond the historical intrigue of the work. Despite being so brief this manga makes good work of symbolism and foreshadowing, and unique among the Shoujo genre, it does a good job showing and not telling when it comes to characterization. I would have preferred this manga have the runtime to more fully explore it’s characters and their motivations, as well as more time for dramatic events to settle and gain traction so we could truly see the impact, but as far as I’m concerned this is a must read for lovers of early Yuri and Shoujo works.

Additional Points:

+ Point for effectively portraying Maya’s intrigue and mystery.

+ Point for thrilling fortune telling scenes.

+ Point for genuinely surprising twists and turns.

- Point for an unsatisfying ending for our protagonist.

- Point for implying that same gender desire is unnatural and dangerous.

- Point for incest.

Even If This Love Disappears Tonight

okay, so I’ve just finished Even If This Love Disappears Tonight by Misaki Ichijo. San was talking about it in his last livestream and even if I couldn’t understand what he was saying, I was curious about the book so I went on Amazon. Nicely enough they had it in English so I went ahead and bought it.

I’ll start this off by saying I live in America. I enjoy reading Asian books when I can find translations of them but I always feel as if I’m missing something when I do. I feel it particularly strongly with Japanese books but I got it with this one too. There are always missing pieces when I read, things that I am just, no matter how deeply I try, never going to pick up on the way someone who has lived their entire life surrounded by a culture will. I’m not saying this as a complaint or as a fault, its just that someone that’s never had a hard boiled egg will never exactly get what someone else is talking about when they call a film noir detective ‘hard boiled’. There are just going to be gaps between cultures that take little things for granted when they’re communicating. It didn’t trip me up in this story the way it has in others I’ve read but I want to point it out because there were a few times I knew something was being conveyed in the story but I always knew I just wasn’t picking up on it. So take my review with that in mind. I’m trying but I know I missed or misunderstood things.

The premise of the book is that our main character, Tooru, in order to spare a friend of his from getting bullied, agrees to ask a girl in another class to be his girlfriend. He doesn’t know Maori and he expects her to turn him down. Much to his surprise, she agrees. But she gives him a list of three rules he has to follow if they’re going to date.

1. Don’t talk to her until after school

2. Keep all communications between them short.

3. Don’t truly fall in love with her.

And our story goes on from there.

Without giving away any spoilers, this is a cute story. It’s also a softly sad story and whether it ends well or not is really up to the reader’s ideas of what ‘ending well’ means. The translator did a good job. It’s a very smooth read and, I thought, carried a lot of emotion in its word choices and how they were presented. I did find the book a little sparse. I’m used to a lot more description in my stories and more focus on the surroundings but that’s not say that the story didn’t fill in all the blanks, just that it didn’t linger the way I like my usual stories to so that I can picture things in my head. Tooru describes himself as ‘bland’ and a character is called a ‘cold beauty’ which didn’t help me at all since I didn’t recognize the context of the term. It doesn’t distract from the story though and the story itself unfolds smoothly, building up points early that will pay off later without making it obvious that’s what its doing or making them jarring. Overall a very good read. The characters were engaging. The plot was interesting and so was the story’s approach to the plot. It’s been a while since I was in high school and so it took me a bit to get invested in what is, understandably, a very young relationship but I ended up caring about the characters deeply and worrying when things seemed to be going so well and yet the story still had two thirds of a book to go. I could understand, entirely, why San was reading it. Tooru had some traits I would imagine would appeal to San a great deal in a story’s protagonist.

I’ll end the review here but if anyone is interested in a spoiler version just let me know in the notes and I’ll write up one of those too. I’d call this a very ‘San’ kind of story. Very softly done with a lot of very quietly, determinedly sweet notes. All in all a good, solid read that gave you some things to think about during and afterward. If what I’ve written so far sounds interesting to you, I’d completely recommend it.

Ichijo's obliviousness to his feelings about Mahiro but also the way he's so desperate for his attention and to make sure he knows he matters and is important and the way he works to also take care of him and help him and it's just... that gets me. The blanket on him, the way he stopped the hug, the vegetable cutting, everything Ichijo does is for Mahiro at a certain point and it's just so good because he's been slowly but steadily falling in love this whole time but if there was ever a boy not looking for love it's him.

"Stupid Migi" (Observation)

Just like my other post about how Migi thinks "Dali always gets the good stuff", I wanted to include a compilation of all the examples where Dali found Migi to be less than intelligent, which is another important recurring motif. After all, one of Dali's nicknames for his younger brother is "バカミギ" or "Stupid/idiot Migi"

Of course, spoilers are included!

In Episode 2, the after the twins found out that there was no scalping at the welcome party, Dali felt he had no choice but to burn Migi with a magnifying glass after the latter froze.

Later, when the twins need to scout people's houses, Migi suggests going down people's chimneys, to which Dali responds by calling him an idiot, asking him if he wants to get burned again.

In Chapter 8, which was skipped, Dali calls Migi an idiot during their "special training". Then, after Migi's visit to Maruta's house where Dali lost control of himself after Maruta had bullied Migi, Migi tries to rub it in Dali's face, seemingly unaware of his brother's feelings, which only reinforces Dali's opinion of him.

In Chapters 12 and 14, the twins investigate their Mother's disappearance and the Ichijos, and it's quite obvious how Migi loses his cool when it comes to that topic, which would only add to Dali's worries.

In Episode 4, Migi does very poorly on his tests, though Dali was able to fool him into doing better.

When Migi gets captured in the Ichijo house, Dali gets worried sick over his little brother's state, though Migi insists on continuing the mission anyway. To Dali's surprise, Migi was dressed up as a baby. Also, Migi is not very good at keeping his voice down when he's supposed to.

In Episode 7, Dali continued fooling Migi with the disguise, even laughing at his drawing skills, and after almost falls from Eiji's house, Dali calls him an idiot for caring so much about the pendant.

Then, after he is found out, Migi bites him and runs away. Dali does his best to get Migi back, but Migi won't even listen to him.

In Episode 9, Migi easily falls into Reiko's (quite obvious) trap. As Dali makes peace with his own death, he refers to Migi as an idiot who doesn't listen.

Later at this shrine, Dali once again calls Migi an idiot for wanting to go back to Origon Village despite the presence of the extremely dangerous Reiko, especially for a "sickly sweet pie". However, I'd like to believe that in that last moment, Dali was talking to himself, calling himself the idiot.

In Episode 10, after Migi saves Dali from falling, Dali successfully catches Migi off-guard by flinging at "fat" insult at him. Little does Migi know his older brother's pride in him.

In Episode 12, Migi uses his head as a battering ram, but to no avail.

Later, when he rushes in the house to bring back Dali, he failed to realize that his pants had caught on fire. Dali obviously thought he was an idiot here, though he can't help but smile, knowing that this "idiocy" is what saved him.

All in all, is Migi actually stupid? Like with the post I mentioned at the beginning, the answer isn't quite so simple, as there's a case to be made for both sides.

On the one hand, yes, it's quite obvious that Migi just isn't as smart as Dali, both intellectually and emotionally. Dali is clearly aware of this, and based on what he said as he accepted his death at the hands of Reiko, it seems that Migi's relative idiocy is what caused Dali to worry about him so much in the first place.

Yet, on the other hand, there's also evidence for the contrary. Namely, Migi was able to score a 100 on the Japanese and English midterms, he came up with the baby act to lower Reiko's guard, and he was able to save Dali during the infiltration of the Ichijo house. Most importantly, he was able to convince Dali to come out of the shadows in Episode 13 when no one else could. For an "idiot", Migi seems to have a mysterious habit of finding the right things to say or do when in a pinch. It seems that these miracles happen thanks to "the power of love" or something, such as his love for Sali as well as for his brother. It's definitely a different kind of intelligence, one that is based on instinct. I'm not quite sure what to call it.
