AITA for accidentally traumatising a 13 year old kid by pretending to be his dead mom?

So basically a couple of weeks back i (33F) was at work and I noticed this guy (30sM) staring at me. Now, this isn’t totally unheard of, I'm kind of used to it because I've done some acting in the past and sometimes people sort of stare while they try to figure out where they know me from. Usually I ignore it, but this guy was like crazy hot so I figured, fuck it, I’ll go talk to him, maybe make a sale out of it. We sort of talked a bit while I served him, and found out he’s a single dad. He had sort of sad vibes and I was kind of into it so when he asked me out I said sure, why not and we agreed to go for dinner.

So everything was going well for a while, we went on a few dates but mostly we facetimed bc he works 24 hour long shifts and scheduling dates around that and a kid is tough, which i totally understood and I was happy to be patient with him.  I should also say we still haven’t kissed at this point, even when he took me out on a boat on a lake, which was probably in my top 5 dates of all time? Anyway, I got the vibe he was holding back a bit but I figured I could wait bc he seemed like he was working through some stuff and dating in LA is fucking hard. 

What happened next was where the real shit started to hit the fan, though.

Basically, I decided to bring him some brownies at work, but I mistimed it and he’d already gone home so I gave them to his coworker who looked at me like I was a ghost or something. I should have recognised something was off then but I brush it off and the next day I get a call from the guy, and he asks me to come over to his place which hasn’t happened before. I figure this is a good sign, that maybe he’s ready to start moving things forward, but when I get to the house, there’s all these pictures on the coffee table and they all look EXACTLY like me. My first thought was: holy shit, this guy’s a stalker. Great. Then I looked closer, though, and the pictures weren’t even of me. Turns out, I look exactly like this guy’s dead wife???

Anyway, that was wild and obviously I left after hearing him out a little bc I just needed to wrap my head around it.

Now this next bit might be where i’m the AH, bc i haven’t had a chance to do any acting in a while and I genuinely felt bad for the guy, he just wanted a chance at closure with his wife and I couldn’t really fault him for that. 

So long story short, I cut my bangs (they looked cute in the pictures of his wife so I figured they’d work on me) and I went to his house in character as his wife and encouraged him to say what he needed to say to her. Things got pretty heated and he shared some really intimate thoughts and feelings so I was getting into it, you know? We embraced and I was feeling pretty good about the whole thing. I thought it really helped him until the door opened and in walks his kid with a woman who is apparently his girlfriend? So i guess the single part of “single dad” wasn’t totally accurate either.

Also, the kid called me mom, which kind of broke my heart, and I feel like maybe I might have fucked up somewhere here.

So reddit, I have to ask AITA for pretending to be a dead woman and accidentally being the other woman while simultaneously traumatising a thirteen year old kid?

Figures that the first interesting person Billy meets in this town is the local drug dealer. Presumed drug dealer, maybe retired drug dealer? Well that's what he's here to find out. He just wants a break from this place, with its stupidly boring people and lack of things to do. A house party of some fellow high schooler is the most interesting thing he's seen since they arrived last week and when he asked when the next ones going to happen, the people around him told him this one was an exception. Cause it was Halloween. If that was the best party they can muster up Billy's future possibilities for entertainment are looking rather bleak.

When the guys from the team described Eddie Munson they made him sound like some kind of loser, nerd, pariah. Yet Billy's first impression is just a regular metal head. And fuck, that would mean there is at least one person with a decant taste in music around. They also called him various things ranging from menace to a devil worshiper. If the people around here really think listening to metal music means you are evil Billy sees tough times ahead for his remaining time in this shithole before he can jump the ship and head back to California.

The weirdest thing the guy did was smile a bit too wide. And not wear a jacket in october. Now that doesn’t bode well for the temperatures to come. Shit, he really needs some distraction as soon as possible or he might just go insane.

Billys sits himself opposite the other and damn the bench is cold as well. Slightly moist also. He really hates this shithole.

“You still selling?” he asks. 

The guy stares at him with intense dark eyes, still smiling. “Oh yeah definitely.” Munson smiles even wider. “But if I sell to you, that solely depends on you, new kid.”

Kid. Jesus Christ. Maybe the guys on the team were described him accurately after all. “What's that supposed to mean?” He demands.

“Easy. Flattery does work on me. If you act with basic decency you get what you want for the regular price. Be nice to me and get a big discount. You keep acting like a disrespectful asshat and you’re not gonna get anything at all.” 

Huh. Unexpected. Tommy H said this guy is a rude asshole. But Billy could totally see this being an eye for an eye kinda deal Munsons got going. And Billy does understand the fun in pushing people to do shit they do not want to do. Dude is the most compelling person he’s interacted with in weeks. 

Billy also heard some very specific rumors about the guy and it helps that he's better looking then most of the cows in this town even with their layers of makeup on. He leans his head a bit to the side and smiles. If pretending to be nice will get him weed for cheap and puts him on the good side of the local drug dealer he can swallow his pride for one conversation.

the regular old family issues but his family never truly gave up on him and they supported his desire to change

the tragic backstory of his childhood was offscreen for the most part (for good reason) but we still get the implications of what happened and it played a huge role on why Orm was the way he was

was possessed by an ancient evil king so again with the angst

ate a roach and another roach in a burger later

can’t run but learned how to run better than most people in quite literally 5 seconds

“I don’t even know those words” whenever Arthur opens his mouth

dynamic with everyone in the aquafam is great and complex, especially Arthur and Atlanna

willingly had a redemption arc + happiness in the end

dude I was looking through clips for a reference image and it literally makes me sick with anger that Genndy chose to portray Africa like That. Literally racist caricatures like come onnnn man. The worst part is that I really want to LIKE that episode aside from the art direction. His mentor is a very sweet guy and I like Jack’s little rivalry with the other kid. I dislike that Jack has to save everyone and the other tribe is portrayed even worse, but at least Jack isn’t fighting by his fucking self the whole scene. there was so much potential in this episode if Genndy hadn’t been so fucking racist with his character designs. I do not fucking understand why he chose to make them absolutely pitch black in color. That’s not what humans look like. It’s like how he colors Jack straight up yellow sometimes. I know during the time this came out it was not very likely for bigotry to get called out but that had to have made some people uncomfortable. Jeeeeesus Christ. The guy portrayed China more respectfully than he portrayed literally any other culture including Japan lmao. Actually I take that back he gave quite a few Chinese characters racist accents. The man wanted a ‘multiethnic’ feel to his show but could not fucking stop being white and racist for it

genuine question but is there any fandom where a character is well written by the majority. im thinking about fandom culture and the spread of frustration when people dont write characters well but. honestly in all the fandoms ive been in there's only like, a Select number of authors who i trust to write Well, let alone write Well AND In Character. character analysis and writing and getting inside characters' heads are all separate skills (all of which are trained by roleplaying fyi can CONFIRM playing pretend with your friends is good for you). there's been more than once where I've disagreed with an interpretation that others agreed with, and then I turned out wrong. or i turned out right. like it doesnt matter WHO is right it just matters that differences in character analysis exist, so even if you DO write well AND write in character, your in character is still going to be someone else's out of character

there's this sort of. vibe. that to play in the sandbox you Need to be able to make a castle, and if you can't make a castle then you shouldn't bother, and it completely dismisses the idea that youre in that sandbox to PLAY in the first place. there's this Weight of disappointing someone if you can't build something that they like, but that forgets that you aren't there to build them a castle. like, be KIND. if you disagree with someone then please make an effort to do so kindly. i dont give a shit about fandom discourse but there is a reason kids get removed from sandboxes if they keep throwing sand in people's eyes. but if they don't like your misshapen sand pile, then youre not obligated to change it. even if you yourself end up hating that same sand pile later- youre not building a legacy. youre playing. and sometimes the result of that play is out of character drivel. theres a reason there are so many authors and so few who i like to consistently read and thats because everyone is Fucking Around in their hobby space. hash tag brag or whatever but i can build castles. ive built several that im v proud of. ive also dug holes in the sand for fun and then tripped on them when trying to get up. I often dug a hole and then got up and fucking- whoops, its a castle now, and i didn't realize i'd made something to be proud of until after the fact. the whole time while creating shit i was Convinced it was bullshit that didn't make sense. and then other times i was Convinced it was bullshit and then i was Right and i can look back and go. huh. ew. but it doesn't matter what the end result was, because i had fun playing in the sandbox

I'm rereading the Snowkit parts from the first arc and... There are several warrior cats plotlines where you can tell they have no idea what they're talking about when it comes to a certain condition or disability and this is definitely one of them.

"If Speckletail realizes for herself that Snowkit can’t learn, it might help her accept that he’ll never be a warrior." I don't know how to break this to you but Deaf and HoH people are actually definitely able to learn things, and the idea that they can't has a long and ableist history.

The whole idea that Snowkit got taken by the hawk because he couldn't hear the hawk or the warnings from his Clanmates relies on the stereotype that Deaf people are oblivious to everything around them, too. Snowkit isn't blind. If they wrote him as a person (and not as an object for Fireheart to pity) he would have hidden from the hawk like everyone else did because he would have seen them panicking, smelled their fear... used any of the other senses he has that tell him things about the world. The fact that they wrote him the way they did says a lot about their priorities when it came to writing a Deaf character imo: he's a plot device and an object for Fireheart to be sad about, so they didn't bother doing research.

#i'm not Deaf or HoH and my knowledge about this is based on research so please correct me if I've accidentally fucked up here #this post isn't even getting into the scene where Fireheart learns Snowkit's deaf but the way he's described there also sucks imo #Snowkit just kinda stares blankly until somebody gestures to convey meaning #but actual audible sounds are nowhere near everything going on when you communicate verbally with someone #you're telling me Snowkit didn't see Fireheart looking directly at him and repeating the same word over and over #and intuitively think ''he's trying to get my attention and wants something from me. I should go over to him.'' #that's not something specific to Deaf people. i do that all the time when I'm listening to music and someone's trying to get my attention. #again i don't have personal life experience with this #but an important character in Old Stains is Deaf and I'm doing my damndest to research and make sure I'm writing her accurately #this is me revisiting Snowkit after doing a lot of that research and going. jesus Christ. #ableism / #fireheart's narration also describes Snowkit as ''slow and unresponsive'' relative to Bramble and Tawny at one point. christ alive.

#coffee bean gang #spider-man #I was almost asleep but now I’m thinking about how there isn’t one piece of media out there that checks all the boxes #of adapting Peter in college + the coffee bean gang + doesn’t downsize the group or combine characters #+ does everyone in a decent way even if it’s not strictly comic accurate #raimi trilogy is one of the only ones that heads pretty quickly into the college era and also involves more than just gwen or mj #and as much as I like the films it does not handle the three of them in a way that scratches the itch for me #I mean for one it’s only Peter Harry and MJ. I like those three arguably the most but man the dynamic isn’t the same #especially bc Tobey’s Peter is much more serious and quiet/awkward with negative charisma (affectionately but still.) #MJ is mixed w Gwen’s personality which was disappointing to me bc I like MJ’s weird and super vibrant personality #and Harry loses some of the ‘kind of a sweet guy but very VERY fucked up’ and relies too heavily on Harry becoming the goblin for revenge #I sound super critical of the Raimi versions qhwjrjwkr I DO like them I do but it feels like completely alternate interps of the characters #most focus on spider-man’s origin which I totally get but also. Peter’s most interesting arcs happen in college #that’s why everyone has to adapt them into the high school years #(which they can do bc Peter was largely friendless during that time and was still fighting some truly d-tier guys #in between the forming of the famous spidey rogue gallery) #I mean I wouldn’t even complain if they chose to do the high school years and actually DID those instead of pasting the college arcs on it #I haven’t watch the 90s show but I want to— does Harry exist in that one bc I know they took out Gwen #at the risk of sounding like That kind of tssm fan. the closest we got to that dream was that show #bc they WERE gonna follow it into Peter’s college years and you could see them setting the gang up #it still fell into the ‘everyone is a childhood friend’ thing so the characters could all be there but it’s one of the most bearable ones

the key to writing the narrator stanleyparable is to make him as stupid and oblivious as possible except hes really in denial about it. of course he knew stanley was in love with him this entire time, do you take him for a fool? its his game, after all, surely he'd know how his protagonist feels about him. think about the most stupid insane decision you could make regarding someone you love and amplify it by 10. if he isnt actively near ruining his and stanleys relationship every time they interact is it REALLY the narrator

watched the kdrama celebrity over the last few days. was hooked from the first few seconds bc the EDITING in the show, & just the cinematography in general is on a whole nother fuckin level, man.

also, just. a really great show in general. v good at building suspense & throwing loops & very nice themes/takeaways. also just a rly interesting way to convey those themes/takeaways.

i think the only issue we had w it was the romance, but. eh. it wasn't so bad that it took away from the ample amount of good shit in the show.

def recommend it!! especially to anyone who really enjoyed the glory bc it has v similar themes.
