I do see that the series takes some of the themes from Ovid's work and as much as I do have a mixed opinion on it since his work wasn't necessarily supposed to be an official roman version of things but political criticism of the government as well as a way to trash the greeks, it does work well with the overall theme and narrative that Percy Jackson has built up with how gods are fallible and in fact had done a lot of wrong and them ignoring their kids is an awful thing and they should be better parents.

Like, yeah, I do have my own gripes with the usage of Ovid's Medusa rather than the original Greek one in the story, but it does work with the larger narrative of the series so it's not that big of a deal for me.

there can be elements of racism and sexism that mean people dislike fictional characters, but immediately tarring all people who don't like fictional characters with the same brush is not constructive for media analysis. you are not inherently morally superior for liking f characters than people who like m characters. attaching morality to liking characters from a specific gender or ethnic background over others stamps on any potential discussions we could have around why those characters are not written as compellingly as others (usually m white characters) even within the context of the same media. i personally think sometimes these characterisations fall flat because people writing them are more concerned with how the character "represents" a minority (women, women of colour, queer women) to the detriment of the character itself. it is pointless, in my opinion, to complain about people not liking f characters without considering why, and immediately jumping the gun to "they must be sexist". meaningful, constructive discussions about how we write compelling characters and why f characters are less compelling need to happen. complain less about "people don't like this f character" and discuss more "how do we write compelling f characters".

For example: Vriska mind controlling two Cronuses when her powers were established as only being able to control lowbloods back in Hivebent. ive been toying with this one for a while because truly i don't feel like offering up much more on this topic but

so. the crux of it is that i cannot control your side of the equation- and no, it doesn't really bother me (none of this has, it's mostly just baffling and i want to make sure to nip some things in the bud for other artists' sake) but my side of the equation will remain entirely blank. my personal feelings will not reflect that, it is not a two-way transaction, and i don't want anyone to feel too close to me and come into my inbox with that vibe. i think jokes about this sort of thing are fine (the server- who do know me as an acquaintence rather than a stranger- do occasionally call me a neglectful father which is funny as hell) but i really am trying to be careful here as to dissuade anyone who may take it a step further from taking this as an invite to be wild in my inbox.
