Okay but like. Imagine you're a kid in an abusive household and your shitbag mother tries to comfort you with a discount hero plushie of this world-renowned record-breaking superhero who everyone thinks is a douchebag, and you don’t believe in heroes, have never felt their presence in your life, but then the hero you have a plushie of ends up arresting your shitbag father, freeing you from that life, but you’re also a fucking grade-A gifted child so you get scooped up by some government hero agency that turns you into a fucked up dark ops hero and you still somehow climb to the highest ranks of superhero society and likeability at an unprecedented, breakneck speed, butting right up against your hero in rank, proving yourself as his equal, and in the process of being said black ops (but also beloved) superhero you're charged with going on an undercover mission to infiltrate a villain group, and you use it as an excuse to get close to that record-breaking superhero (hereafter referred to as the love of your life) and you use him as bait in your ward to both get close to him and the villains, showing off at break-neck speed under the excuse of creating said bait (and also because you want to show off for the love of your life of course), and in the middle of your romantic skyscraper lunch date he calls you a glutton and you tell him that when you want something you get it, but then the fucker the villains send to test their strength in a stunt you helped orchestrate ends up almost killing the love of your life, leaving his face irreparably scarred, and you save him in the midst of the battle by literally giving him your wings, facilitating his rebirth, because oh right, he has a fucked up past just like you, and he wants to change just like you, so he literally has a phoenix from the ashes moment with YOUR wings and he fucking wins, therefore proving himself to Japan as the number one hero people can fucking lean on, and then you visit him in the hospital and he gives you a fucking look like he knows you're shady as fuck, but him alive and scowling under his bandages is the best thing you've ever fucking seen, and then you go deeper undercover, but you can't tell him, so you have to send him cryptic as fuck messages in a goddamn villain-anarchist cookbook, but he figures it out because he's smart and he fucking knows you, and in the midst of a full-out battle you both instigated together, his eldest son (villain) who he thought was dead, thoroughly traumatized by the love of your life's ambition to become number #1 on his own merit, tries to melt you to death, but you survive, and after everything you fucking visit him in the hospital, so damaged by his son you can hardly speak, wanting to lean on him and rely on his help still after everything that has happened, and he just gives you this look like you're the second coming, because no matter what the fuck is in his past, you believe in him, have always watched him, because he's your fucking hero.

I made these with Dye Mad Yarns' Chester Sock base in Play for a Purpose (2023). The pattern linked above does not come with fingers, but a friend saw @ninalanfer's version modified to include half fingers and loved it. So, naturally, I had to Make These For Them :)

Lincoln who is so hurt and betrayed that he can't even bear to look at his dad right now, who *needs* space, but who loves his dad (the fucking poeticism of that nat 20 babeeey) and keeps the stone with him as a compromise, for when he's ready, as a show of love in and of itself, that he's still his dad's baby, eventually choosing to give him another chance.

Grant who loves his son more than anything in the world, but who can no longer avert his gaze and speak in half-truths and jump off of (cat)buses. Grant who *needs* to prove that he can confront himself and talk about his pain and his shame and his mistakes and try for his son's sake if not for his own to love himself and see himself as something other than broken and beyond repair. Grant who's last chance is stripped of all possibilities of escape and now he can only talk. But maybe it's easier this way for him too. To not have to look at the child he tried so painfully hard but ultimately failed to protect as his heart unravels, to pretend that he is alone with his thoughts rather than speaking to someone, to let the tears fall down his face without having to be seen.

Ahsoka’s flailing arm nearly hit Rex in the face, but he dodged, and caught her around the middle, stopping her tipsy swaying. “Yes, Your Highness, we know.”

She threw an arm around his neck and squished her cheek against his pauldron. “I’m prettyyyyy.”

“If you insist, Princess.”

“Do you think I’m pretty?”

She swerved wildly, and he redirected her. “It would be unseemly for me to answer that, Princess.”

“Seemly. Seeeeeemly. Stupid Seemley Ress,” she said, slurring his name, then trying to correct herself. “Stupid Seemly Ress. Resss. Ressss! My tongue’sss not workin’, Ress!”

“So I hear.”

“I’m pretty. And I’m strong.”

“As everyone knows.”

“And I’m tall!”

“Acknowledged.”

“And I’m orange!”

“Correct.”

“AND I’m… I’mma walk on my own now!”

She shoved him away and took two wobbly steps forward before he had to catch her again.

“I can do it!” she whined. “I’m a lady. I’m twen’ny yearssss ol’. I can walk!”

She very clearly could not, so with a sigh, Rex bent over and lifted her completely, carrying her down the hallway. “All due respect, ladies do not get sloshed at formal dinners.”

“Isss no’ my fault,” she muttered. “Issstupid Korkie’s fault.”

“Right,” Rex said, ignoring her and the looks he was getting. Mostly sympathetic ones; everyone knew the Princess was trouble and was used to her getting into worse predicaments than this.

“Korkie says you liiiiike me,” she continued, singsongy. “He says you’re—you’re not sssaying an’thin ‘bout it cause of, uh. Uhhhhh. Clones! People don’t like you. Stupid people don’t. Good people do. Korkie says I like you.”

“That would be surprising, considering the amount of complaining you do whenever I’m around,” Rex deadpanned.

#The Poisons We Drink #aroaessidhe 2023 reads #this is…….a lot of cool ideas but also so many elements and high stakes that i kinda lost track of them #the pacing is weird. the worldbuilding is random? #why is brewing SO overpowered & risky for her but the other powers seem to have pretty normal low-scale risks? #it’s definitely ambitious and has some cool ideas and also some great characters just. didn’t execute as well as I’d like #as much as we’re told the main threat is the government trying to put through a Registration Act #most of the actual antagonism we see is from other Witchers? #like the systemic discrimination got a bit lost in the witcher family drama and murder politics #important things to say about oppression and police violence but like....idk #she has this ‘deviation’- essentially evil sentient magic inside her head (and you KNOW I love that trope) #but it’s barely explained and very underutilised? other than helping her get out of bad situations you could take it out & would barely #change anything #also it’s explained at the start that she’s an empath but other than the very occasional mention I kept forgetting #will also note that I bumped this up my tbr because I saw the author talking/promoting it as the MCs sister being aroace but no mention #maybe it’ll come up in a sequel (there weren’t really any places where it would have made sense to bring it up here) but idk #(just the way the author was asking for advice on how to write an ace character and stuff you’d assume that they’d….put that in the book?) #not really a critique of the book itself but anyway.
