somebody rec me some good books. and they do actually have to be good. don’t rec me something just because it’s gay or it’s popular, it has to also still be good. like both the story and the writing have to be good none of this good concept bad writing or good writing horrible story. fantasy or soft scifi preferred, especially if it’s nontraditional fantasy. I am bored and sick of the internet and I want to get back into reading more but I’m kinda meh about most of what’s on my shelf

*edit: when I say “soft scifi” I don’t mean cozy I mean not hard scifi, as in stories that are more fantastical than grounded in hard science. for example the Martian is considered hard scifi, so not that. Star Wars would be closer to a soft scifi bc it’s all bullshit on the science end and it’s more about the vibes

#I started the jasmine throne and that was good but then I noticed a somewhat repetitive quirk of the writing style #and once I noticed it I couldn’t STOP noticing it which was extremely distracting and made it hard to pay attention to the story #the problem with books is I am sooooo hypercritical and so many ppl are bad writers and get published anyway #and booktok can’t tell the difference so these shitty books become bestsellers just bc they’re gay and tropey #not that jasmine throne is bad writing. it’s ok writing I just can’t stop noticing they overuse one particular sentence structure #and now it’s driving me crazy #but there are plenty of other bestselling books that ARE legitimately bad writing #I’m reading a psalm for the wild built rn and that is genuinely really good and next is the second book #but I’m almost done with the first one and both are like. really short. so I need something for when I finish those #(carefully does not look at the stack of comics I bought at SPX that I haven’t read yet)

Man, I still remember participating in one of the many jjba zines that I took part in and how my piece was placed as the first page (for the second time) and how one of my mutuals/artists that I’ve always admired, hit me with the “oh… you’re on the front page again… 😅…” like man, that kind of killed me lmfao. I never got over it like man, what was that about.

I was like this is kind of awkward… #another zine I was in which was run by a mutual… well… I never even got my zine in the mail #and I even sent them $20 for some merch that they were making since I wanted to support and never got that either… #they deleted their blog but I see that they remade and draw a lot of DM and have a lot of popular posts here so it’s kind of awkward seeing #their art shared on the dash sometimes skeks #we’re still mutuals on Twitter but I don’t rly want to ask about my zine again or the $20 bucks #it’s okay like I owe other ppl stuff too I’m a late bird man but still loskekk #they were the mod for the zine too #I might hit them up again I guess I still love their art and they were always fun to talk to #there was another zine that I participated in where we had to purchase our own copy bro #i remember being so annoyed by that but went ahead and bought it anyway #I was invited to this zine so it made me even more annoyed #I #Guess it didn’t make its money back #or something like that but I remember being broke at the time and was pissed that I had to pay for my own book #I didn’t buy any of the merch because why when it was supposed to be free #if you’re participating in a zine the book and merch should be free

YA sff set in the near future where an opensource augmented reality is commonly used like social media, and there’s also a completely virtual fantasy game version

follows an Anishinaabe girl who who’s the top player in the VR game, and is constantly fighting to keep her place against the misogynist neo-nazi group in second place

as well as her real life, dealing with being a shy and self-conscious teen growing up on the Rez, and her brother having cancer

and a Uyghur boy who’s moved to her community from China after finding acceptance in an online community (even when he doesn’t agree with their more extreme views) - but when he gets to know Bugz, he has to decide who truly deserves his loyalty

great mix of sff and culture, the future while also very real community traumas of the past (and present)

#walking in two worlds #the everlasting road #wab kinew #aroaessidhe 2024 reads #This has some REALLY interesting and important concepts! #I just think it could have used some more development… Obvs this is YA and I’m an adult I know I’m not quite the audience! #There’s a lot of depth in the setup of the characters but I feel like it skips a lot of the progression #I think there could have been space for more development in a lot of places to make the story feel more dimensional #- but also has so many plot threads that maybe that would have bulked it out too much #It does also jump around quite a bit between the different parts but I think that makes sense with how juggling with irl / online life. #she’s got a lot of internalised fatphobia at the start (and the love interest going “I don’t think you’re fat!!” when people call her fat.. #then in book 2 suddenly she’s okay about it - again I wish there was some progression! #her brothers cancer journey is. basically all offscreen lol mostly as set up for plot in book 2. so it doesn't have the emotional impact it #could have.. #I liked the way it integrates her culture into the game in a really cool way (though I would have liked more detail there) #also having auto language translators but they regularly don't translate quite right / still run into issues - realistic! #the parallels drawn between his being taken from his family and put in a state education school and Indigenous residential schools #the way that a future world will never be as separate from the past as ur average sff future often portrays #but yeah anyway lots of good ideas execution not so much for me..
