Welcome to Coffee Writes Fiction!
A Little About Me:
Hello! My name is Coffee, or Jason if you rather. I’m 32yo as of writing, he/him, living on the East Coast about 30 minutes from the ocean. I love cats, coffee and tea, roleplaying, horror games, researching whatever grabs my attention, vintage/nostalgia/kitsch, pretty photos, and a lot more.
This blog is both a place to dump my personal projects [both original and fanfiction] and a source of knowledge and inspiration for my followers! In addition to writing-related posts, you may see art, science, history, queer subjects, BIPOC topics, current events [within reason], poetry, inspirational quotes, really whatever seems like it would help or inspire someone, I’ll reblog here. There will also occasionally be reblogs from other tumblr users who need help, mostly financial. Hell, sometimes I even need help. It’s not easy being disabled in this era…

What I Write:
My fiction is dark, always has been. Most of my protagonists are trans men, because I write what I want to see. I apply content warnings where needed and I can think of them but please let me know if I miss something.
Here’s a list of my current WIPs
Farewell Vesperos: Book 1 of the gothic fantasy Runner Owen series. In a Victorian inspired world of eternal night, detective for hire Owen Rosedown must unravel the mystery of the destroyed Vesperos family and its missing heir before a killer strikes again. Series features ghosts, evil vampires, dangerous princes, and a gay villainous love triangle.
Hollywood’s Prince [working title]: Erotic Runner Owen standalone spinoff/au set in a fantasy 1950s Hollywood. While investigating a string of thefts, B-movie actor and amateur sleuth Owen discovers Hollywood’s favorite leading man, the tall dark and handsome Aurum, is a vampire. Concept still in development.
Lionheart: Concept under development but it's gonna be gay as hell. With unicorns that are tattooed punk assholes when human. And a 35+ year old protagonist.
Pharaoh Syndicate Investigations: my Cthulhu Mythos project! Features characters borrowed from my friends, with permission. Full summary tbd
Which Image: fanfiction for the super obscure retro-style horror/adventure video game series the Chzo Mythos. No familiarity needed. British gentleman thief turned supernatural government agent Trilby saves the life of a young American woman. It's just an average day for him. He has no idea everything in his life will be turned upside down within hours. Two stories out of ??? written.

My personal timeline as a multi shipper
Here’s my controversial MHA (I know I know) ship timeline. I see a pattern of simply liking a ship because the two characters had an interesting interaction or exclusive to Izuocha, where Ochako can only likes Izuku. This is in order by timeline. I want to to spread this to show people that you are not hated by 100% of a group of anybody. We are all multi-faceted beings. My ships are based on interesting dynamics not canon-ness thereby superiority. This list is based on a timeline, not my interest.
‘Shipping’ in my case is simply enjoying the characters in a fanart or fa fiction outside of canon which is deemed more than is needed to understand the charcters. Support romantic or otherwise fanart with mainly two characters basically. It doesn’t even mean I see how they would be together in canon. Before bakudeku, I read most of these at the same time. I felt I had to have one ship only at some points too which isn’t true.
Maybe shipping for me is just liking an aspect of a story.
Izuocha. I liked this ship because it seemed like it was going to be obviously canon. I enjoy a lot of canon-ships like NaruHina, KanaTanjiro or just about any of my favorite shoujo and boys love pairings. Also a few spare girls love comics too; cute! I just thought that’s how it was. First friend and supportive and obvious.
Kacchako. I enjoyed their fight in the Sports Festival arc of mha because Katsuki didn’t hold back. I agreed with most of the crowd, he’s /kind of/ insane in how he acts at his point in the series. I fully believed he would go Sasuke or Villain route in this part of the series. I liked that he didn’t treat her differently because she’s a girl despite his intentions. Ochako put up her best fight and found something new in herself that she hadn’t before; the wit and quick thinking to fight back against a super strong unrestrained Enemy. I ended up seeing a BEAUTIFUL fanart of him sitting at a desk and Ochako sitting at a wind that was amazingly rendered. I read a lot of— let’s just say extremely out of pocket fan fiction about this rare pair. I felt insecure about this ship because it got made fun of online. Also Bakugo’s ‘nothing frail about her’ comments in the relationship connection extras. Regardless, interesting, fun, imaginative, unexpected.
KiriBaku. This seems to be the mostly widely /accepted/ ship in my opinion. I feel like it has the most support in the American fandom. Kiri was super popular at the time I joined my hero and I was deep in the weeb-tok era of 2019 through 2021(anyone else miss the “Iwa-Chan, kageyama!/ I know that I’m gonna slaughter dis” sound? And OH the cosplays). MAN I miss it it was so fun and less dodgy than boring-ass takes and blind fighting on twitter. I was a bakudeku hater at this time because I blindly believed the death threats were true. I didn’t hate the ship personally feel deep down but I thought actual death threats would’ve been too far. I often dumped mean and repetitive comments on anti-bakudeku tiktoks. I really enjoyed an actor au where the author switched the moha characters to playing their Japanese voice actors. Baku go/okamoto really wanted to play a canon gay character in the drama they were actors in but Izuku got it first which caused his continued resentment of izuku because he assumed he was not gay. It was really fun and some of the fics were very memorable and wholesome. Good times! At the transition between these two ships the fandom was all happy and the fanfics were funny and Bakugou was being supportive of his friends in his own way at this point.
Bakudeku. The plot twist of the century. But, not really. See, I hated bakudeku mostly because I wanted to fit in with the popular opinion and simple “they hate each other!!”. In order to seem normal and not insane since it was so hated. Again, I already thought bakugo’s character because it humanizes a bully in a realistic way. I usually live for those crazy ass villains anyway; it’s just anime. Death Note??? But obviously, I never would have put Bakugou in Izuku together. Rewatching season 1 that shot was terrible as fuck and heart wrenching and I feel so bad again after watching and I can see why I absolutely hated Katsuki when I watched mha. I can see why people still hate him. Again, I started looking at the fanart out of spite and saw a lot of fanart with one of them looking at the other back and watching them from behind. It’s really true to the series. It is so heart wrenching to watch and read. That’s why I like reading it. I’ve read SOO many fics where either of them die mostly Izuku, because of the suicide comment, but eventually with the event of black whip, mostly Katsuki for obvious reasons. There’s a deep theme of saving and winning and even the horror of death when you love someone so obviously I was captivated. Some fics, and I mean A LOT, basically predicted word for word the hospital scenes. I don’t like ‘I know your secret power’ tropes, but it’s there. There’s just so much between them it’s crazy. The way /The Way You Used To by: edema ruh/ has like the exact hospital scenes that LATER!!!! Happened in the manga… the death, the emotional power-ups, the connection of a separate soulmate ( ‘nother person in your body thing like the vestiges) quirk, PLUS ofa transactions inspired by two heros that canonically seem like they’re about to happen. You’ve got the Volume cover and everything to show for it too. Themes of almost Spider-Man and Gwen???? I rewatched Spider-Man 2 and it’s like huh??? And also Izuku is inspired by spider-man as well? Oh SHIT, is bakugo Izuku’s failed save? I’m gonna be SO FUCKINNG MAD if that happens, but I’m one of those people who enjoys angst a lot at the same time and I will appreciate it. I’m so everything for this ship for this ship platonic friendship or not I may just ship their friendship
TodoIIda. Usually, I don’t find a lot of my ships seeming canon except for this one. I already know that any important relationship or friendship between characters can be shipped but since they aren’t seen interacting on screen much next to the scene where iida saves him instead of going ahead, it really stuck. That must have been Horikoshi’s intention because he came back to them recently like they matter to each other. I JUST remembered the stain arc and how IIda and Shouto’s can relate on wanting revenge. Iida’s motto to help someone anywhere any time relates to Todoroki’s helplessness as a child. They’re important to each other. Friends, family.
Togachako. I didn’t consider this a ‘ship’ per se until recently, but I was obsessed with how Toga wanted become Ochako and the people she loves also how they like the same boy I guess?? Izuku seems oblivious and somehow even unrelated to their relationship even though it started it. There was this one cosplay tiktok with a poppy sound on it and I was OB- SESSED. I told you I love me some crazy simpy villains and Toga is just that. Unexpected was how Ochako starts to focus on her specifically and want to save her. I was NOTTT expecting her to say she was jealous of her smile. I was so sad when Himi said she didn’t want to talk to Chako anymore so I was PUMPED to hear people spreading the misleading togacjako canon on twitter. Toga biromantic/sapphic vampire whose blood-sucking is like kissing, is getting blood from ochsko for the rest of her life. I don’t know if toga really cares anymore. I also enjoy their possible relationship to Yuki-onna. Would love if something came out of them in canon, though I just realized toga explicated said she wanted to go out with Izuku so why can’t she do it for ochako?
dabihawks. I was SO confused why people shipped this when they barely showed their interactions. I only realized when a mostly canon style fan manga dubbed did a dabihawks comic. I then realized they are are almost the same childhood reflections of each other, neglected, abused by their parents
As an end note, I learned that every ship dynamic has to be romantic, but usually it is because of recent fan culture. I’m 15 but I know a lot about older fandom because I was an avid Kaichou Wa Maid Sama fan and used the less popular fan fiction.net. People are a lot nicer on fanfixtion sites than on social media sites, I’ve learned also older fandoms didn’t get massively hated on like MHA does. There’s just more people in the world who watch now. Remember to be yourself because there’s always someone feeling just like you out there, I promise. Chaio;3

Alright spoilers for the final Dr Who special
HERES MY THOUGHTS ON THE GIGGLE AND FINAL RANKINGS FOR ALL THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIALS!!
-
-
-
-
Bi-generation
Oh boy
I spent a while trying to write this, but every time I came to a complaint, I realized that the story kind of set it up in a way. All that to say, this review was originally going to be a lot harsher, but I found some justifications for the things I had complaints about.
In general, I like the episode. It’s a goofy romp where Neil Patrick Harris is a cosmic-scale nut job while David Tennant looks on in horror. It’s fun. It is not, however, a good ending to a series of specials let alone ANNIVERSARY specials. It doesn’t feel like an ending. The ending doesn’t feel emotionally resolved (that’s the thesis statement right there)
Throughout the episode, the doctor is constantly reminded that he has always had to move on. He always has to leave his friends. Between meeting the classic companion Mel, to the Toymaker giving him basically a slideshow of all the people who have died because of him and his actions.
And so the story compliments this with an ending where the doctor doesn’t have to leave. The pattern breaks. The doctor stays.
Aaaaaand he also doesn’t. At the same time.
I feel like the same effect could have been reached without splitting the doctor in half. Now there’s two doctors. How the hell are you gonna manage that? The Timeless Child shit is definitely cannon so now there’s two cosmic super beings AND two Tardis’s (Tardices? Whatever the plural of Tardis is) in existence.
I was emotionally prepared to say goodbye to David Tennant as the doctor but now the story feels unresolved. Instead of the heartwarming ending they were going for, it feels like this was just concentrated fan-service intended to lead into a spinoff series and encourage fanfiction writers to fill in the gaps (I will say, the Doctor calling Rose his niece was very sweet. He does finally get a family and that is undeniably nice)
SO! Corrections:
I think the same emotional effect (if not more of an emotional effect) could have been achieved if 14 didn’t actually die in that confrontation. Maybe the resolution of his story is that The Doctor decided that, for a while, he does stick around. Maybe we get a montage of domestic Doctor. He still gets his family and he still gets to resolve all his emotional baggage, just without the Bi-generation nonsense. When Ncuti takes over we get a Doctor that is ready to start traveling again (remember, 15 isn’t going to have this emotional catharsis. He left without confronting his baggage. He’s still fucked up, but I don’t feel like the writers are gonna acknowledge that) And then, after some time has passed, maybe the David Tennant body “wears a bit thin” and he regenerates the normal way (that’s how Hartnell regenerated, I feel like it would be fitting with this whole “new era of Doctor Who” shit they’ve got going on plus the Toymaker is a villain from Hartnells run, the themes are themeing)
Other than that, pretty fun episode. Kate Stewart slays. Shirley continues to be a bad bitch keeping the doctor on his toes. The tease for the Master at the end was fun, always a blast to see that lunatic. Overall, I give The Giggle a 6.5/10. Passable episode with a truly nonsense ending (and not the fun kind of nonsense)
Final ratings for all the specials:
The Star Beast: 8/10
Wild Blue Yonder: 9.5/10 (this might be one of my favorite episodes of Doctor Who ever)
The Giggle: 6.5/10
I do still love RTD. The man wrote some of my favorite stories in all of fiction. I’m very optimistic about this coming season of the show. I think Ncuti Gatwa has charisma coming out his ears so he’ll be fantastic. My pie in the sky dream is that it’s so good that it makes me forget about all this weird shit and hanging plot threads. Here’s hoping!

Watched the first two episodes of LEGO DreamZzz: LOVED IT!!!
I just caught up with the latest season of Ninjago to prepare for the next era (Dragon Rising, ANYTHING IS BETTER IF YOU ADD MORE DRAGONS 😍), then I noticed this new LEGO show and I went for it. I watched the trailer some time ago and it genuinely didn’t click for me, the show didn’t seem all that...
MAN I WAS WRONG
FIRST TWO EPISODES AND I’M IN LOVE
I know the full season should be out on Netflix, which I have, but I’m following the release from the LEGO Youtube channel so I can pace myself... for, like, the first time in my life 😅
I like doing these thoughts diaries so I might do it for the following episodes as well. Obviously SPOILERS for people who didn’t watch it!
So... THOUGHTS ON "AWAKENING" AND "DREAM CHASERS" GO!
I know it’s a little thing but I’m a huge fan of Giles Panton, I followed him through all of Nexo Knights and his villain role in Ninjago, so even with a little role I’m ecstatic to hear him! 😍😍😍
Also this character is curious to me, who was he? Why did he appear specifically in Mateo and Izzy’s room?
Love the little conflictual situation, they’re middle school children so only fair to see a bit of that. It seems that Cooper got a new friend who’s a bit of a jerk, Mateo got defensive because of that, Logan clearly isn’t super used to have polite people around him, Cooper just wants everyone to get along... like, this seems like such a middle/high school situation, it makes me appreciate their age more 👌
Yes I'm a sucker for drama why do you ask
Hermanito? Is this a Latino family? I’ve been following so much of Ninjago I never considered seeing different cultures in LEGO works, this is genuinely super cool!
I keep seeing these breakfast burritos around, is this like California? I'm from Italy so I never had these for breakfast 😅
I want to try one though
VINCENT TONG’S CHARACTER! WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO HIM! ❤️ I loved Kai in Ninjago, I loved Jestro in Nexo Knights so you bet your LEGO claw hands I’m gonna love whatever new character mah boy Vince is voicing this time! GO GO GO!!!
Is Logan Asian? I’m seeing the eyes are differently shaped from the others, that’s really cool seeing these differences!
I don’t know if it’s obvious, but having an artist to be a creator of dreams? Love it love it love it
The fact that he's got a tablet too, I like that it feels close to this age
Izzy is a delight 💕💕 Like, such a bubbly personality, she watches anime, she is so optimistic and energetic, and she seems to watch Mateo’s back and that’s nice to see
Wait
WAIT
IS THAT THE ZANE ANIME MOMENT FROM NINJAGO?! Are you freaking kidding me this is amazing 😂😂😂
I LOVE Z-BLOB I LOVE Z-BLOB I LOVE Z-BLOB I LOVE Z-BLOB
Yep, saw Cooper inside the belly cage of the giant monster... which actually reminds me of Nexo Knights? Merlok inside of Monstrux' belly cage... in the virus season... the one that never came to be as the show ended early before that... DON'T CRY 😭
Next episode, saving Cooper?
DO NOT TEASE ME WITH AN ARCHER I HAVE A WEAKNESS FOR ARCHERS YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH I LOVED AARON IN NEXO KNIGHTS AND ZANE IN NINJAGO DURING HIS ARCHERY PHASE (granted it didn’t last long) 🤩🤩
I thought this girl was already part of the whole secret dream organization from the trailer, instead she’s a solo girl? Interesting, I'm guessing we'll get development
Also she’s totally the girl Mateo was checking out at the burrito stand, I don’t think it’s supposed to be a secret 😂😏
IZZY NARUTO RUNNING I’M DYING I LOVE HER SO MUCH 😂😂😂
IT’S A MECHA Z-BLOB!!!!!!!!!! 🤩
The resolution between Mateo and Cooper was so “awkward boys who don’t really like showing too many feelings as they're still a bit young” and honestly that has its own adorableness in it 💕
Aaaaaand Logan gets his reality check, I’m actually looking forward to how his character will develop through the series! LOVE ME BULLY DEVELOPMENT 😍
HEEEEEYYYY NINJAGO MURALE EVERYONE!!!! 🔥☄️❄️⚡️
Wait, the owner of that hourglass is a she? Lunia he said? I thought the last person to have it was a he since it was voiced by Giles, was Lunia the person before him or was it her but hiding her identity? ... was it Mateo and Izzy’s mother?
Yes I’m insufferable about missing parents troupes and yes I wondered about their mom the moment I only saw the dad
I WILL KEEP BEING INSUFFERABLE I AM NOT SORRY ABOUT IT
If you give me the sad mom is not with us anymore I will be happy, I’m sorry it takes me very little to be satisfied. I’m a girl that knows what kind of angst to order from the internet 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️
...
Dude
DUDE
YOU’RE SERIOUSLY GIVING ME THE “MAIN CHARACTER IS WOUNDED AND NEEDS HELP WHILE EVERYONE IS SHOWING HIM WORRY AND CARE” TROUPE?!? I’M A FANWRITER I’M THIRSTY FOR THIS I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!! 🤯
Logan even opening the door while Cooper and Izzy brought Mateo in the car! IT’S THE LITTLE DETAILS YOU GUYS! I WILL REWATCH THIS SCENE A LOT!
Izzy keeps giving me reason to love her, look how much she loves her brother and wants to be sure he’s okay! 💕
Cooper also being a real bro, although he’s the one I know the least of aside from being Mateo’s friend. I’m looking forward to see what kind of person he is, I did see some kind of gun in the poster
LOGAN BROUGHT SOUP THAT IS SWEET! Am I getting a “gifts is my love language” from this boy? Because it’s super cute 💜
This whole show reminds me a lot of Nexo Knights, but with better animation and attention to details for the background and characters. It feels like going back home a bit in that sense, since I was absolutely obsessed with NK and this is very fantasy-like, but I’m genuinely curious to see where this show is heading to 🤩🤩
Heeeeeyyyy, Tommy is in this! He just left Ninjago so it’s so wholesome to me to see him between the executive producers! 🥳
I'M SO LOOKING FORWARD FOR MORE!

So this is it…we’ve finished x-force. All issues done. All story lines done and all interest done. So why do I still feel like nothing happen? Was time wasted? Was it really all for nothing…
Fair warning I do ramble on for quite a long time, but it’s for good reason! Anyways…let’s begin.
Chapter 1: A Promising Start/ First Impressions
When I first stumbled into the new era of the X-men I was originally very skeptical. For someone who doesn’t have any comic book knowledge outside of a few DC and Spider man comics from the early 2000s I was expected to be lost. But then after reading a little of the new era, made by Johnathan Hickman, I was truly intrigued in what I was seeing. Sure I had questions…many of which I wouldn’t get the answers to unless I read spin off comics of the new era. Despite that I was beyond HOOKED!
Tumblr media
When I first saw this I immediately thought back to deadpool 2 and what they did with X-Force. Now not everything as memorable in that incarnation of the team you still had colossus, deadpool, and domino. 2 of which was seen here and the last one would come a little later. Outside of that I knew a lot of these characters already:
Beast
Wolverine
Colossus
Jean Grey
Deadpool
Domino
I’ve seen all this characters at some point in my life to give the X-force branding of comics a try, and thankfully I did. Sure, I didn’t understand a lot of the context behind why certain characters acted a certain ways but I could appreciate how rare those moments were. Most of the time if I just kept reading the issues I’d understand what was going on, especially in relation to the newer characters.
Kid Omega
Omega Red
Sage
X-23
Black Tom (I think that’s his name).
The dialogue between both the old and newer characters, to me, really sold me on this new era. It got me invested with what could happen to these characters. On the side note, I don’t really see many people talking about this, but the art style of these characters are VERY COOL!!! It looked fun and expressive! I’ll show examples of why I love the art so much throughout this. It really says a lot about what your gonna read, for better or for worse.
If it wasn’t obvious at this point, I clearly haven’t read comics or even x-men comics for years. So when you hear my opinions just remember that my knowledge on certain things are fairly limited in most aspects. I. Don’t. Know. Everything. Yet I’m still enjoying what I’m reading so far, with or without connections to the past. To me that only enriched everything, not the pinnacle of my interest in this initially. Anyway…let’s continue
Chapter 2: Enjoying the concept material
In my opinion, the first couple of arcs with x-force seemed like they had promise. They had a lot of interesting stuff going on. Take this for example.
Tumblr media
Colossus, a mutant that everyone has heard of and it known for his heroism snaps the neck of this random mutant…THAT RAISES HUGE FRICKING QUESTIONS OF YOU ASK ME! Like why is he killing people? What’s the importance of this character to him? Based on how this is drawn it looks as if he struggled to kill her even though his face doesn’t portray that, the veins on his muscles do. Speaking of the art colossus looks more cold and distant being in his metal form…and every time I saw him before he never gave me that impression. It was always more light hearted rage fulled or disappointed dad (thanks Deadpool 2), but never cold murder. a more underrated question, HOW OLD IS COLOSSUS?! I mean he has a fricken beard now…didn’t know he could grow one.
Or…what about this!
Tumblr media
Why does Jean look so…classic and basic in her design? Compared to Wolverine and Hank she doesn’t look like she belongs there. Even though she’s going through Omega Red’s mind she seems to be the odd one out. Speak of designs why does Hank got mad scientist energy now? Wolverine…more understandable since I’m pretty sure this guys a villain. Although this looks more painful than any super hero interrogation I’ve ever seen before. This doesn’t even look like interrogation, this looks like torture.
What really caught my eye in all this was the moral ambiguity at play here. Reading early x-force a lot of that was present, and as some one who loves seeing situations within the grey area this satisfied me greatly. Look at this conversation between beast and Jean.
Tumblr media
Now I’ll address this later, but look at the points they make. Normally the X-Men are depicted as people who want coexistence between humans and mutants, yet here Jean weights the two evils and says lying is for humans not mutants. She views that as the bones honest path for x-force than what beast did.
Although beast, surpassingly, does have a point. A lie would only suffocate the process needed to save their nation. They already have enemies who would want nothing more than to harm them, so what’s the point in letting them strategize when he can just kill then now? Why should let billions die in the future when we can kill one person now and save billions?
Do the end’s justify the means…that’s for you to decide.
As for me though I’m picking up so many mixed signals here from beast on this one. Look his eyes, their blackened, this is mostly for evil, corrupted, shady, malevolent intent. Yet there’s a sense of honesty when beast confesses his mindset here. It’s almost as if he himself doesn’t enjoy the ruthless calculus of war at affect here. He hates himself for it. He wishes he could be on Jean side and yet after experiencing so much pain and damage he doesn’t see the point in being hesitant with those who want to hurt you. For him the line was drawn when they even had a thought of hurting Krakoa. Even Jean, who has her back turned towards him, seems to be getting what he’s saying. In some way she gets it. But she doesn’t want to get it, she doesn’t want to understand his reasoning but she does.
First time I read this I was stunned! Like all this was just one panel?! Wow! I really hope this continues onward. I would love to see every character get this much depth in them!
I could go on here for ages about this stuff, but if you really read x-force this is kinda what it’s about. At least until we get towards the end…which is where I started to realize the issues in all this beauty.
Chapter 3: Problems in paradise
Remember when I talk about how much I adored the concepts of what I was seeing? How much I loved what the art brought to the table so subtlety? Well…look at this.
Do you see anything wrong with it? Probably not. And honestly I didn’t either when first viewing this.
Tumblr media
Just colossus suspiciously murdering someone. Initially I didn’t think much of this because I thought, “hasn’t he killed before? Why put such emphasis on this one?” But look back x-men history the writers and artist always illustrate the emotional distress of colossus murdering any one. He has never taken any pleasure in doing it, and he hardly does it. So when he does do it you gotta ask, “what did that person do to deserve that response from him?”
Anyway we’re getting side tracked here. Next photo.
Tumblr media
Do you see a problem here? Again probably nothing. Art looks great, nothing outstanding but nothing terrible either.
On to the last photo.
Tumblr media
Did you spot the issue? No? Well, just look at the number on the top left and right side of the photos. Do you see it now? I’ll explain. The first time we see colossus arc really begin is in the 24 issue of the comic. The next time we see it is in issue number 39. The very end of the arc is issue number 46. You could argue that his arc spanned several issues in between them…I wished it played out like that. The reason why I chose these 3 photos is due to them being the only time we see the colossus arc take center stage. Now you probably asking, ‘okay so if his arc wasn’t taking center stage then what was?’
This is what was taking place:
Change in X-Force leadership
The quiet council putting colossus as a member.
Beast going rogue and wolverine in pursuit of him
Kid omega disappearing in a fight after a corrupted Cerebro goes on the loose.
Kid Omega coming back, not really a kid anymore, but he has x-force follow to the future to deal with beast.
Beast and wolverine have a massive fight.
The build up to the Fall of Next before it was officially dubbed so. And so much more.
All of this was happening alongside the colossus subplot, it’s a boring waiting game. For someone reading this for the first time it felt like watching an amazing episode air for the first time only to wait a week or two later for the next episode. (Disney plus)…
But it wasn’t a week or two long it was YEARS! Years for a plot that could have being unraveled by some common sense by professor x only for it to never happen, despite them being in the same room with each other so many times! You literally see him on the quiet council every single day and get you don’t ask how he’s doing? Especially after seeing his behavior towards his own teammates?!
Tumblr media
To his lover at one point?!
Thematically this works…but for the viewer this feels scattered and rushed. Hell the photo on top isn’t even from X-Force it’s from Immortal X-Men! Why is his arc being stretched like this, only to have no impact on x-force directly? I get it, if we spread out colossus influence it will show the readers how big of a problem this really is. The ripple effects of you will. But when the ripple effects don’t lead anywhere for a long time, constantly put to the sidelines by other major events, and then given a mediocre finale it doesn’t increase the impact it lessens it.
Not to mention the conclusion of this arc is simply colossus killing his brother which is earned don’t get me wrong, I loved that. His brother deserved death. But the very second we see colossus again it’s with x-force as if nothing happened. I don’t even remember if we had a conversation or a look into colossus psyche after everything happened. It’s just straight to the Fall of X which is already happening by issue number 43.
This doesn’t even stop at colossus though, domino has that same issue. Being skinned alive, tortured by an forgettable villain, and having it all be undone by a res set button called resurrection just feels wrong. Makes it seem pointless…
The true tragedy by far isn’t even those characters…it’s by the series main stars of the show.
Chapter 4: Beast Agenda Finale/Shattering my expectations
So Wolverine vs Beast. Again, another great concept from X-forces writers and editors. And another disappointment. Why? Because every time we get close to the conclusion to their huge fight beast manages to slip away. This one…this one got me the most upset. I remember waiting around for ages to see the conclusion of this arc, this cover art didn’t help.
Tumblr media
Yet, despite the lies this cover baited you with we don’t even get close to the finale of the beast saga. He runs away, and the only thing that does die in this issue is just beast many clones. Boring, and useless.
But you want to know what really left a nasty scar on me during this arc. The characterization.
Was gonna show an example but I reached the picture limit…didn’t even know there was one.
Anyway, what I mean is characters don’t talk naturally. It’s always it either drive forward the conflict or to build up the conflict. There’s rarely any moments we’re characters just talk about what’s going on in their lives. It’s just moment to moment action. Feels lifeless.
Going back to beast, after reading what people think of this version of beast…I see where your coming from I truly do, but I love this version of beast. He’s actually the incarnation that got me interested in every other version of the character because his actions had context and if you had the context it would enrich the actions of this character. It wasn’t required but you were rewarded for doing so. Despite his very obvious flaws he has a point in a some of what he does. Or at least there’s an external reason that tragic on why he feels the need to do this. As explained with the Jean and Hank conversation I’d like to think the reason why Hank is fighting so hard for this country is because everyone saw what happened to Genosha! No one wants their homes to be destroyed by those who hate them the most. Not even that but it shows how broken Hank truly is from everything…that’s depressing yet intriguing to read.
And I wished this version of the character was treated with the same respect as the other incarnations and not given a shitty finale. A finale that completely reboots his character and pretty much states to the readers that we as the writers are done with this character and all that hyped up facade was worth nothing…no redemption and no future. It just hurts…and as I go back into the past to see better conclusions for this character I fear this version of the character could fall future and future down the rabbit hole.
This is why I hate reboots.
Last thing I want to say on this character is the art. What. The F@$&. Happened.
Tumblr media
Beast (Prime), as he is referred to now, looks the exact same as the one in the past. For anyone thematic reason this could have, all I get from this is laziness. From an artist and thematic lens’s they should be different. If they had made them both different it would hit home how time has really change these characters. But since they look the same I guess that nuance also doesn’t mean anything. The art used to be diverse and fun while also being serious and dark. Now it’s just flare and boring not to mention lifeless. It’s just another pointless experiment for a pointless finale.
Anyway, thanks for reading this very long post, took me about 4 hours to finish this. Had a lot to say obviously 😂. Hope this gets you to understand how I feel about this whole thing, anyways thanks for reading and take care! Oh and if you want a better deep dive into the personality of both beast go to @positivelybeastly he does a wonderful job on that front.

Once again I almost ran over here after the very first scene💀💀💀 so let me get into it…
1. These episodes were not as strong or as long as the first 3 but these writers are funny as hell (not sure if it’s intentional or just actually bad writing but it’s enjoyable🤡)
2. I SCARED MY DAMN DOG LAUGHING SO HARD AT THE PUBLIC VOTE…. OF COURSE fusebox found the one way to get our partner stolen without it being our “twins fault”. I think Amelia redeemed herself for me afterwards when they had their cute twin moment though and I’m still picking all the nice options
Tumblr media
3. Of course Amelia’s bedtime outfit is hotter than our options🙄
4. Baby Lewie sleeping on the daybeds🥹🥹 what an angel. I just might have to take the soft route this season💀
Tumblr media
5. Bella is the real friend here, thank god FB has *hopefully* learned after the Dana BS that if we say we aren’t into girls we don’t want you to keep asking! No shade to those that want a female Li but I love that she pulled us for a friendly chat and i like her better than Grace
6. Portuguese Party Boy….. that line had me rolling. But he’s not it for me so I led him on but didn’t let him kiss me and told the islander’s he likes me better than I like him. Sorry Roberto looks like I’m staying loyal to Lew until Elliot/Hamish pull up
7. PLEASE TELL ME YOU PICKED THE DIAMOND SCENE TO HAVE HIM FEED YOU THE DESSERT IN FRONT OF LEW?!?! I couldn’t do that to Lew Lew since I’m not into Roberto but please give us a run down since you’re in your villain era😈
8. The jealousy scene between Lewie and Roberto was hands down the best part of this volume and I will die on that hill
Tumblr media
9. I can’t wait til Ivy gets absolutely shut down by Baby Lew next week. Ain’t no way he’s gonna kiss her after he just came to tell us she’s been all over him and he doesn’t like it. I can’t wait to see her fall off that high horse of hers and come running back to Ryan with her tail between her legs🥱
AHHH love your takes !!
did u do the Ozzy scene during truth or dare?! and the pool scene. fb couldve just given me that this week and I wouldve been ok.
2. this was SOOOOO UNSERIOUS why would they do this literally every single time. there are 14 volumes and like 87 hotties waiting to come in still. Why does fb keep pushing the agenda that I care THIS much about my first LI. Girly I dont! he's just my placeholder until I can fully unlock Ozzy
3. LMAO I dont even remember what it was but now im desperate to go back and look. I loved the pink lingerie with the robe. thats the one I chose
4. this was super cute 💖 even though im fully waiting for Ozzy im going to stay on Lewie's route until I get there.
5. I love Bella and I'm def going to need another bestie after I get with Ozzy. Grace is already starting to get so annoyed/mad at my MC bc shes clearly going for Ozzy 😬
6. I DIED at Portuguese Party Boy...they were trying to pull a Davide from last summers IRL LI UK. and I was def screaming at the reference
7. OK so I didn't bc I didnt want to do that to Lew!!! like flaunting Ozzy in front of him is one thing but willingly going for a boy I know I dont want...I couldnt do it!
8. STRONG AGREE!! I need more jealousy pls fb!! And not just from the girls!! For me I need Ozzy to get a little jelly too...I am paying for all those diamond scenes! It's what I deserve!

IT'S GONNA BE MAY: a Newsletter

Podcast: Unwell: A Midwestern Gothic Mystery
Playing: God Hand and Nier (Jank is Good, Jank is Life)
Making: Doom levels
Writing: Project E and *:・゚✧*:・゚✧NEW THING*:・゚✧*:・゚✧ (which I will talk about below)
Word Count: Word counts are just a way the patriarchy can arbitrarily muffle voices it doesn’t like… but it’s 167338
TLDR: I talk about my new short story anthology project, word counts and the desperation of doe-eyed newbie authors, the insular nature of TTRPGs and nerd culture jargon, glossary provided for her pleasure.
Firstly, new thing! *:・゚✧*:・゚  I’m working on a super secret idea which I’m going to keep secret until precisely … now. It can be summed up in five words: TECHNO HORROR ANTHOLOGY FLOPPY DISK. Take yourself back to a bygone era, where the hair was big and often mulleted (wish that trend stayed dead, crimped hair stayed away but mullets came back? WTF humans) to when everyone is reading their Goosebumps or playing with their Tamagotchis. Close your eyes. Can’t you hear the dial-up now. Smell your breakfast cooking in your George Foreman grill. I know I’m talking about a large year range but for most of us millennials the 80s and 90s is just a blob monster of slow computers and corded phones and Scrunchies and listening to the radio, waiting for your fav song to play so you can hit record on your cassette player. I will keep you posted here on the progress and continue to give hints as to the full plan with all the gory details of its taxonomy. For now, this is all you get.
Project E’s progress was not so bad. I’m actually really proud of this word count. I shaved off so much this month. I was productive AF. And yet I feel compelled to continue on. The average scifi novel length is up to 150k words and I’m still well above that. Then you go to the average DEBUT scifi novel length and psht… 120k. If I remove 50k from Project E, that’s a whole book on its own!
I’ll admit that sometimes, a book is really and truly longer than it needs to be, but let’s also admit that plenty of books get published that are CERTAINLY longer than they should be. I’m looking at you, Herman Melville! So to act as though this is an aspect which would make it impossible to publish a novel is disingenuous. The shit reality is simply that more words means more ink and pages, and publishers are scared of losing money, so unless you’re well established or the concept is a “sure thing” then they’re unlikely to give you the time of day.
I have no proof, and this is not a statement I’d backup in any legal capacity, but I’d imagine it’d also be quite easy to find a manuscript which says things you don’t like, and then force the author to gut it to fit your requested word count. Once it barely resembles its initial form, then it’ll be toothless enough to be allowed to get by. New authors are desperate to have their stories accepted. We’ll do anything. ANYTHING. This isn’t to say that Lit Agents and publishers are mustache-twirling villains. I’m saying that shitty people exist in every corner of society, and those folks would likely be happy to abuse their positions of power.
So, a month and a half ago I watched a video about the TTRPG community and its insularity. Well, technically the video was about ShadowDark, but Indestructoboy spent a significant part of the video discussing this problem. I’ve never considered how impossible it would be to understand folks in our community when we’re discussing games. “So I just got to try out a new OSR1 TTRPG2, it’s a Roll Under3 3d64 system with no Death Saves5, or HP6 and it’s entirely GMless7!” Just imagine for a second that you don’t have access to the acronyms or specialized jargon. That sentence would be word salad!
Shit, just TTRPG is useless to anyone not already in the community. Tabletop Roleplaying Games have the power to be an incredible tool for community building and a creative outlet, but by creating so much shorthand, we force folks to learn a tertiary language to even engage with the simplest examples of this style of game! I think that a good stop-gap would be a Glossary of terms in the back of tabletop roleplaying game books, but long term I think it’s pretty important to consider that maybe doing away with the acronyms at LEAST would benefit the community significantly. (Or if you’re gonna use them, consider explaining them somewhere in your post/ book/ video.)
youtube
Support weird. Support indie.
OSR either means Old School Revival or Old School Renaissance. What these means is up for discussion and debate, but the “Revival” side appears to be focused on literally reviving old-school games like Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition while the “Renaissance” side takes ideas from these old Tabletop game systems and adapts them to more modern game design sensibilities. OR AT LEAST THOSE ARE MY DEFINITIONS.
TTRPG is simply short for Tabletop Roleplaying Game(s) which generally involves a certain level of imagining the actions (theatre of the mind) of a character whom you embody in that game, where you must take on the role of someone who likely does not think or act like you would.
Roll Under is a type of system where you will be rolling dice to try to get a number lower than your character’s ability scores. (The numbers that represent their Mental and Physical aspects) If you do, you succeed, and if you don’t, you fail to complete whatever task you were attempting.
d6 is shorthand for six-sided dice, which is the cube dice most folks think of when they hear “dice.” In this example, there is a 3 at the beginning which tells you that you would be rolling three six-sided dice and adding them together.
Death Saves are a concept from Dungeons and Dragons. When your character loses all of their health points/ hit points (a number representing how healthy your character is) then they fall unconscious and are forced to roll a twenty-sided dice each time their turn comes around. If they fail to roll a 10 or higher, then they have a “failed” death save. If they roll a 10 or higher then they “succeeded”. Traditionally you need three of either of them to finish being in this unconscious state. If you get three failures, you die, and if you get three successes, your character “stabilizes” but remains unconscious for some time. There are more rules, but those are for someone running a game to explain, this gives the basic understanding, I feel.
HP is short for Health Points or Hit Points. This tells you how much damage a character can receive before they fall unconscious or die.
GMless. So, first, a GM is a “Game Master” and their job is to narrate what happens around your characters and to roleplay pretty much everyone in existence that isn’t your character. In Dungeons and Dragons they’re called “Dungeon Masters” or DMs. So, a game that is GMless simply means that there is no Game Master and instead the players are cooperatively telling the story together, usually by allowing the outcomes of dice to tell them whether they are succeeding or failing at certain tasks.

I think the only thing that makes me hesitant about godzillaXkong the new empire aside from how weirdly skinny evolved Godzilla looks, is that the villains don’t really feel like “boss monsters” worthy of a team up
They’re not bad designs IMO although from what we’ve seen of them they seem a bit generic without much to distinguish them besides their ice theme,
But in general they don’t really have the presence of other Godzilla monsters that acted as final villains for monster team up movies
Part of this could also be how the monsterverse kind of limited it’s possibilities for backstories, every monster shares the same origin except mechagodzilla and king ghidorah, so these new monsters effectively just being “more evil Titans” kinda makes it feel functionally the same as the muto’s or skullcrawlers, they’ve blown their load early with king ghidorah and mechagodzilla so I just can’t view shimo and the scar king as a threat on the same level as king ghidorah or even mechagodzilla.
Like, I’ve seen the monsterverse compared to the Heisei era but each monster Godzilla fought in the Heisei era had more unique powers then just a beam attack that’s a different element as well as unique origins, biollante was a human experiment gone wrong, battra was a wrathful god of nature, king ghidorah was created by time traveling scam artists, destroya was created by the weapon that killed the first Godzilla, etc, it made each foe feel unique if nothing else.
Shimo and the red king aren’t bad monsters they just don’t seem fit for a team up movie. They’re not an ”avengers level threat”
I’m still super excited, the fights look like they’re gonna be fun as hell to watch, and hey maybe my predictions will be completely wrong,
But given how much they mirror Godzilla and Kong I also can’t help but feel this is Godzilla and kong fighting their own wario and waluigi

Let me preface this by saying I just saw black panther 2 the Monday after thanksgiving. Usually we see all marvel movies opening night but I didn’t have the money to take my sister and our friend so we waited. I watched the trailers, thought I knew what was happening. I had heard that the villain was hot but from the trailers I don’t remember finding anyone super hot. So let me tell you what a surprise it was for me to walk in unprepared.
I’m only gonna say this ONCE. The power Namor has over me and my obsessions is ridiculous. First of all I should be stronger than this and second of all I am NOT apparently NOT stronger than this. Never before has the fluff tag had me in a chokehold UNTIL THIS MAN resurfaced from the water. Have I written any stories? What noooo (yes I have I’ve written four already) and you know what I’m not even mad.
Namor is the most beautiful hunk I’ve seen in my entire life and I am dying for more fluff. More tropes. More x readers more text post memes. I want more of him on my timeline in my LIFE. On a side note the water queen by tacotime on archive of our own has me also in a choke hold. It’s Shuri and Namor and typically I don’t read fanfics like that with preexisting characters as the main characters (because I’m selfish and I wanna imagine myself in the story) but IT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN STORY IVE READ IN A LONG TIME. And I’m from the era of 2016 WATTPAD where in the marvel stories Clint hid in the vents and Thor would fight anyone for the last pop tart. Which in my opinion is the best era of fanfiction. So when I say run to archive of our own I MEAN RUN.
Anyways uh black panther was like 10/10 totally recommend great movie. And other than Namor who totally ruined me I love how we unpacked apart of Shuri I didn’t know I needed. Beautifully done.

The gremlin is back with new notes, I hope you don't mind. I'll put a read-more mark in case someone wants to skip them.
Santa Maria we're like 1 minute in and it's already going places
Pete didn't strike me as a tattoo person but it makes sense
I mean I know my man is getting slapped and all but that shirt is fire
"Who's a good boy?" sounded equally terrifying and awfully cute (9 minutes in and I'm already bananas)
TANKHUN YES HELLO OMG YOUR OUTFIT IS LIT LIKE ALWAYS
Tankhun has the best reactions, kicking Kinn with legs included
Porsche is the definition of "this all could've been done without a gun and yes, this all could've been an email"
JESUS that wrench is huge
what if the car accident was caused by Time? In one of the first episode Time mentioned Tay's dad covered up his car accident like nothing ever happened because it was his area. Just a thought.
omg Porchay and his Snoopy hoodie so cute I'll die
as someone who has terrible relationship with my siblings, I'd die for their bromance. Porsche and Porchay might get on some people's nerves in the fandom, but like... They literally only have each other. Of course they'd be super gentle and overprotective.
God that blow-dryer is loud
omg these two babies. Tay and Time are serving looks
OH MY GOD SHE IS SO PRETTY SHE IS INDEED SERVING LOOKS
Love how Tay is manspreading while Time is trying to occupy as little space as possible
Vegas is really reading Childhood's End, a story about literal aliens invading Earth while he has Pete locked up???
No, he isn't. Idk whether I should say God bless or not
I wish Vegas' father a happy burn in hell
Tankhun is such a fashion icon and no I will never stop saying it
I want Tankhun to be kindergarten teacher to my kids so he can teach them basic life rules such as be relaxed and kill everyone who is suspicious immediately and all that while looking so damn fabulous
Sir, uh, that is, um, really creative excuse to kiss someone...
Pete is so good at asking the right questions at the right time
"Have you ever loved me?" no, that's why he Superman-ed those kidnappers and proceeded to enter the warehouse guns blazing... (I getchu tho, Chay...)
Vegas, it's not as bad as before because prior to this you got free Pete therapy session
"If you hate me, you'll have energy to kill me later." or as I call it, positive thinking
Turbulence... noted.
Nope, I don't think my car accident theory was correct. Rest in peace theory, you did your best.
I started to respond to this bullet by bullet but half the bullets were just variations of “AKDHDJNSJSKAJSH SO TRUE” so here is a shortened version lol
THE WHO’S A GOOD BOY LINE REWROTE MY FUCKING DNA ISTG if I ever decide to proceed with my villain era I will be taking Vegas as my manipulate manslaughter malewhore inspo
“This could’ve been an email” LESTAT I WHEEZED
That wrench scared me more than the electric chair (taint edition) from ep 10, like for why is it so ENORMOUS
Tumblr media
I live for sibling bonds too ugh. Oldest of 5 here so Porsche’s older sibling struggles resonate deeply. (Also that one post about how Kinn is a middle son but an eldest daughter…math was found dead from the accuracy)
The second I saw the Childhood’s End cover I had to pause and Google lol I’m obsessed with analyzing characters’ reading choices (the Kardashian Konfidential book led to a headcanon that Kinn started watching KUWTK with Tankhun just to feel something and now he’s lowkey a celebrity gossip encyclopedia)
Tankhun kindergarten teacher…WHO’S GONNA WRITE HIM STARTING A MAFIA DAYCARE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF THEERAPANYAKUL TOTS
No bc my first thought when Vegas did the pill kiss was “holy shit he’s ballin I could’ve been having my gf give me Tylenol kisses this whole time???” Like absolute legend behavior imo
Kinn walking like that had me thinking Something Else and I was like “surely…surely they wouldn’t have…..not-not on a-a helicopter” so glad we got confirmation of a sky bj to bring my brain back online (sort of)

Thoughts on Wednesday
🚨spoilers ahead🚨
Characters
Cast: Wednesday was delightful, her dialogue in particular was a lot of fun, and Jenna Ortega did a fantastic job. Much of the supporting cast simply filled the roles of teenage stereotypes, I found 1 in particular to be incredibly irritating, and the others simply didn’t stand out to me (it didn’t help that the majority of these character’s plotlines involved unnecessary romances).
Acting: Jenna Ortega carried. She was GREAT but the majority of the side actors were rather mediocre (ranging from bland to actually cringeworthy). That mainly applies to the teenage actors. Gwendoline Christie, Christina Ricci, and Fred Armisen were good too, fun to watch, but nothing particularly remarkable (either due or a lack of screen time or simply a lack of interest).
Dialogue: Similar to the rest of my notes, Wednesday had fun dialogue but the rest were more than subpar. The supporting character’s dialogue definitely landed on the negative side of the ‘how do you do fellow kids’ scale (again, looking at one character in particular), which was pretty cringy, and made it difficult to watch at times.
Plot
Concept vs Execution: The concept was really fun. Everyone loves a good escapist mystery. The execution was very entertaining. However, it ended up way too formulaic and cliche for my liking- all of the twists were predictable. So predictable in fact, that I was able to predict all 4 supposed antagonists, both the decoys and the actual villains. And I say that as someone who’s admittedly terrible at guessing culprits in mysteries. I can almost guarantee you’ve seen this exact type of thing before.
Pacing: Pretty good! Definitely kept me engaged throughout the show, and the twists were enjoyable despite being a little obvious.
Depth: In the end this was still a rather shallow and stereotypical teen series, just with a fresh coat of paint.
Creativity and Visuals
Sets: I really loved the design for the school, it gave the show a great environment.
Costumes: Some were really good (Wednesday), others weren’t super noticeable (understandable, this is about teenagers, you can’t expect a full on fashion show), but some were more than a little ugly.
Style: Tim Burton’s approach was, per usual, really fun to watch, a classic mix of gruesome and playful. However, I feel like I should add that it was just that- classic Tim Burton. Don’t be expecting anything overtly out of the box in this department either. If you don’t like his style in every other movie he’s done, you’re not gonna like it here either because it’s exactly the same.
Overall Attraction:
Memorability: Again, in the end, this was just another cliche. As much as I appreciate the differences in tone and style from your average teen tv series, it wasn’t enough to mask the similarities plot wise.
Entertainment Value: Honestly still quite a lot of fun to watch (hey, if you’re gonna watch a shitty teen tv series, it may as well be one like this).
Did it achieve what it set out to achieve?
Honestly this is one of those cases where I’m pretty mixed. I believe this series goals were to establish a new era of Wednesday Addams and create an entertaining and fresh new teen series centering around a unique character. This was certainly entertaining and Jenna Ortega did a great job at establishing a new version of a character we all know and love. While that makes it sound like a great success, this series simply wasn’t as unique as it thought it was. Just changing the aesthetic of the stories we’ve heard a million times doesn’t make them any different at the core, or any more exciting than the other thousand times we’ve seen them.
Overall Thoughts: Disappointingly cliche and predictable, but still an entertaining show perfect for a guilty pleasure watch thanks to Jenna Ortega’s performance and Tim Burton’s style.

I did literally just say I love Sonic now more than ever so gonna offset my last post about Prime being negative by mentioning a few things I really like about Prime.
One of the biggest ones is just how dope it looks! Really fun stylised 3D animation that looks smooth and has a good focus on like, keyframing and strong poses - combined with the really expressive mdoels it’s a style that really works for Sonic and I can’t wait for more even just to see how it looks.
And on visuals, I really like the character designs! Part of the reason I grind Sonic Dash so hard or why I bought the Tokyo 2020 Olympics is because getting any official opportunity to see the characters in alternate outfits is usually just super fun, especially because of how strict SEGA usually is with that stuff. Prime meanwhile comes around and has given us like 3 extra outfits for several of the core cast with still more to come! That’s just blanket really fun!
I also like that Sonic’s new looks tend to give him neat little abilities. Narratively it doesn’t amount to much but I don’t even feel like it has to - it’s a neat surprise factor/rule of cool thing that adds character to whichever universe we’re in and enhances Sonic’s reactions to those places as well. If anything it’d honestly be cool to have something like that in the games lol.
I like the voice acting a lot! I actually can’t meaningfully expand on that one lol, it just sounds really good, everyone feels well cast to me, it doesn’t feel like many awkward line reads made it through to the final thing. They are just nice. The only person I don’t adore is Eggman but even then, A) I so can’t imagine non-Mike Pollock Eggmen and B) actual Eggman is mostly absent in favour of Mister Doctor Eggman so I’m pretty much solid with it anyway.
I really enjoy New Yoke as a setting a lot. “What if the villain won?” is a classic setting for a reason, even being one that multiple pieces of Sonic media have explored, but I think New Yoke manages to feel particularly fresh even just on execution and aesthetic alone. It helps that it still feels very lived in - there’s a living, breathing population and a band of rebels that operate in secret and there’s Nine’s hideout and just like, cool shit going on lol.
For that matter I like Nine a lot. I literally put Tails as my 5th favourite Sonic character in that list I did a while back and he’s been in virtually every single Sonic game even during some of its most intense Solo Sonica eras - but he can feel very relegated to the background because of the nature of his character sometimes? So it’s really awesome to see Prime use Nine as an excuse to really let Tails play a major role with lots of actual development and stuff. This is helped doubly by the fact that, awkward pixel art aside, the flashback of his actual backstory (as canonised by Origins wow) alone helps him just feel like the real Tails we’re dealing with, just in a different setting. And yeah, the mechanical Tails are just really cool lol. Particularly a fan of the fact that it allows Tails to be up close and personal in combat again - he’s supposed to use his Tails to attack as well but lots of Sonic media has him holding back for support roles in combat, it’s nice that Prime is willing to acknowledge that, yo, Tails can throw hands. And also tails lmaoooooo
I’m not sure how best to word this part specifically also, but I personally was worried that Prime would sorta like, I guess just follow a rigid structure of x episodes in x shatterverse, grab the crystals, and then move onto the next one? The formula not really changing? But it does not do that and we kinda go back and forth between them and there’s things happening between the shatterverses and like, just in general there’s an actually good attempt to keep the structure fresh and interesting.
And the biggest thing of all is that. Prime is actually just really fun lol. There’s a lot of other good things I haven’t mentioned, but it all comes together with what I have to make a show that’s actually just plain old entertaining to watch. I didn’t feel like I was watching the new Sonic show out of obligation, I was just watching it because I genuinely liked watching it. Even my problems with it don’t feel like a huge deal because it’s so good at the moment-to-moment that I wasn’t really thinking about them while watching. Like it’s literally just a good show, and that slaps.
So fuck yeah, Prime is dope.

Doctor Strange XVI
So I finished reading #4-14 of Marvel Premiere which serves as Doctor Strange’s solo comic in between Doctor Strange Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. So yeah, Doctor Strange reigns supreme as consistently being my favorite book from this era. This was better than Tomb of Dracula, Werewolf By Night, Man-Thing, etc.
Marvel Premiere #4-10
Tumblr media
The first eight issues (#3-10) deal with a Lovecraftian-esque villain and it marks his debut as the main antagonist, Shuma-Gorath! NOTE: I talked about #3 in my Doctor Strange XV post!
Tumblr media
I loved how the first few issues build such a dread and really feel like Doctor Strange walked into a horror comic. It fits in tone with Tomb of Dracula and Werewolf By Night really well for the first big arc. I also love how for the majority of the first seven issues only Shuma-Gorath’s name is invoked and we don’t get the physical reveal until issue 10 (see above panel). The one thing I will say after reading these issues is the scale of power from Strange villains doesn’t always make total sense like the final antogonist in issue 12-14 is basically God (Sise-Neg) and it immediately does away with the stakes that were set with Shuma-Gorath from the first arc. The one consistent is Mordo is always the second best sorcerer until a new one gets introduced. More on that stuff later in a separate post.
Tumblr media
Shuma has several villains working for him in this arc and it starts with a serpent entity called Sligguth. I liked his design and he basically had a cult-led town worshipping him. It really felt the most Lovecraftian during the first few issues and I loved that. We also got to see physical manifestations of the Vishanti for a few brief moments.
Tumblr media
Doctor Strange then fought with N’Gabthoth known as the “Shambler from the Sea” who probably had my favorite design out of Shuma’s followers. He was awakened once Sligguth got defeated by Strange. Throughout this arc he was in Starkesboro and had trouble because of the evil that surrounded the town which was interesting.
Tumblr media
Clea returns in issue 5 and man was I excited! There’s more with her later. I have become such a fan of her character and I can’t wait till Doctor Strange 3 or whenever she appears next. She and Wong go to Starkesboro to help Strange after receiving a message from Umar although we don’t get to see that happen.
Tumblr media
Once Strange defeated the others he had to travel to England where he fought Dagoth. A lot of these beings could’ve been Namor villains just cause most of them lived in the sea. I was a little surprised that Subby didn’t pop up to help but Strange being Mystical had a better chance I guess.
Tumblr media
Issue #8 is really where the ethereal classic Strange art comes in. Strange has to fight a planet named Kathulos after defeating some demons first.
Tumblr media
I thought the fight with Kathulos was too quick. The planet starts absorbing Strange but because it has to put all its force behind absorption, it can’t defend itself from Strange’s attacking spells. It’s supposed to be a planet but I feel like it got defeated pretty easily with a lame weakness.

Issue 9 starts off with Strange getting off the dying planet Kathulos with the aid of the Ancient One! We’re introduced to Living Buddha and he’s a villain! I don’t know if there’s any correlation to the actual Buddha but this stuff was weird (problematic?) so I’m gonna skip to 10 because that’s where it concludes!

Doctor Strange fights Shuma inside of The Ancient One’s mind!? It was super cool and I think it built to a cataclysmic conclusion because it had to end with The Ancient One dying! That was a really powerful moment for me. The fight with Shuma is up there with battles like Dormammu and Strange’s physical fight, Dormammu and Eternity as the best fights in Strange Comics (so far)! Again, my one issue with this awesome arc is that they immediately downplay Shuma’s power when Strange meets Sise-Neg. I guess it’s applicable to the laws of diminishing returns or whatever. Shuma was a great villain and I already want more! The death of The Ancient One was everything I hoped it would be. Since I’ve run out of the ability to use more panels I’ll save my thoughts for #11-14 on the next Doctor Strange post. So I guess this is part one. Overall while I have my minor problems with this arc (mainly the immediate arc that happens after this one). This will go down as one of my favorites! I loved the Lovecraftian horror feel of the first few issues and then when it gets to the cosmic mystical weirdness of Strange afterwards, I was just enthralled. Idk how longtime Strange fans feel about this arc nowadays but this was great stuff. I missed me some solo Doctor Strange and this gave me stuff I didn’t know I wanted and also everything I wanted! Check my page for part 2. I’m still learning how to use Tumblr again lol next up is Doctor Strange (Marvel Premiere) issues 11-14!

Series 8 Episode 11 & 12: Dark Water & Death in Heaven
Woah is Daisy reviewing her first two parter since Series 6?? Yea she is. Hello everyone and welcome to my review of the Series 8 finale. I’ve absolutely loved going back and rewatching this series so far, and despite a couple of duds, overall the focused character arcs in this series have been a refreshing change of pace from the more high concept arcs of the 11th Doctor’s era. Does this finale do the rest of Series 8 justice? Let’s find out.
Dang Missy, you ARE so fine. Ok that pun was terrible but Michelle Gomez’s Missy is an absolute joy to watch. This story is at her starting point in her arc over the next 3 seasons, where she is a lot more familiar to a lot of Masters before and after, but it still works with her. She kinda does sexually assault the Doctor in Dark Water, which obvs is a yikes, but scratch that scene away and she just exudes chaos in the best way. She really is here exclusively to fuck with the Doctor and I am SO here for it. She’s the one that put Clara & the Doctor together, she’s the one who’s been harvesting the souls of the Doctor’s fallen enemies. Even in her defeat, she tells the Doctor about Gallifrey’s coordinates, and the scene following where the Doctor finds out she was lying… yea it’s an oof and it sells Missy’s impact on this incarnation of the Doctor. So so good.
Alongside Missy, we have the Cybermen, and we know I’m a bit of a cybergirl myself. But, this time, Moffat manages to nail them as a villain. In his 11th Doctor outings with the iconic villains, I feel like he didn’t focus enough on what makes the Cybermen good. They’re our friends and family converted into emotionless husks, lending from body horror stories to sell us on just how scary this is. And yea, they show us exactly this in this story. Danny Pink’s existential dread during his time in the Nethersphere, followed by seeing his wrinkled body forced into that Cyberman, is terrifying to see unfold. The way his guilt from his time as a soldier is prayed upon by the system to make him beg to have his emotions stripped from him is horrific, but his ability to power through and lead the Cybermen to saving the world proves his worth as a hero, and the Cybermen are utilised as a concept so perfectly to round out Danny Pink as a character.
One gripe I do have though is in regards to Kate and Osgood’s return. It is absolutely a joy to see them back on screen as always, and I love these characters to bits, but sadly they get sidelined very quickly in this story. Osgood via death at the hands of Missy, and Kate via getting booted out of the aeroplane, again by Missy. I do wish we got more time with them, and they got a little more agency in the story (especially if you’re gonna just off Osgood like that), but alas, they weren’t the focal point on the story so whilst it’s a disappointment, I can see why this happened.
And Jenna Coleman take a bow because her performance as Clara Oswald in this story is nothing short of brilliance. From her grief and following betrayal of the Doctor, to her so easily slipping into the role of the Doctor, to her arrogance and following heartbreak as she realises she was bragging about how chummy she is with the Doctor to Danny. Jenna was expected to have such a range in this episode. She needed anger and glee and sadness and everything in-between, so it’s a testament to her that she nails it all with ease. Yea she’s fantastic in this 100%.
I’m not even done because we haven’t talked about how AWESOME Twelve is here. This is his character fully evolved after the events of the series, and seeing him able to express empathy and be resolute after his rough start is super satisfying to see. His line after Clara betrays him, “Do you think I care for you so little that betraying me would make a difference?”, is my favourite Doctor line maybe of all time, because it is built up with an entire series of character development coming to fruition at that exact moment. Dare I say, this was the moment Twelve became my Doctor. Alongside this moment, his interactions with Missy are gold, and your heart breaks for him both when he sees that Missy lied about his home, and when he is forced to say goodbye to Clara with a hug. That last scene with Clara really wrenches my heart, and again Daisy gushing about cool lines but when she says “Thank you for making me feel special” I just lost it. Because that’s who the Doctor is, that’s what they do. They make you feel special. It sums up what I love about Doctor Who in one little line and yea it’s perfect.
TL:DR/Overview: Dark Water & Death in Heaven are a fantastic two-parter that rounds out the arcs of Series 8 incredibly well. Every single member of our main cast is written and performance to excellence, Missy and the Cybermen are both villains that are well utilised, working in tandem to bolster the story rather than stealing the limelight from one another, and it’s the kind of story that reminds me how special Doctor Who is to me. Sure, I have my gripes with how Kate & Osgood were handled, and there are a few things I wish didn’t happen, but the positives so heavily outweigh the negatives here that I’m S tiering it. Series 8 really is great huh.

And so ends another era of Showa Kamen Rider! New Kamen Rider (Skyrider), Super-1 and the ZX special. Technically ZX aired a couple years after Super-1 but ehhhh fuck it I’m counting it. Makes a neat little block that way.
Compared to the Seven Legendary Riders, I’m sad to say it’s been a little disappointing. Oh I’ve had fun, for sure! But all three of these have been shows I’ve been all too happy to slot into the category of “I liked that okay enough”. Everything from the original five shows ended up being a new (or returning) favourite for me, with the exception of X which even still had the sick Apollogeist stuff. I have by now very consistently laid out the formula they had of “Amazing start, big block of bullshit which is nonetheless fun, really comes back around in the last fifth” that all those shows followed -- it’s what allowed the original series and V3 to speak to me so much thematically, it’s what had me loving every minute of Stronger’s style, it’s what made Amazon such an eternal favourite of mine. But unfortunately I just was not captured by the small revival of the franchise that came a year later.
Not to say it was off to a bad start -- I’ve outlined before that Skyrider was off to a FANTASTIC start, actually! Those first 10 episodes were a wonderful, thoughtful reboot of the original show with refined concepts and villains and some beautiful style through the flying. But very slowly it’s a show that gets ship-of-theseus’d into something with a lot more content but a lot less substance with a new supporting cast, a more generic fighting style and a loss of what the series was about at the beginning. Super-1 had an extremely promising first episode but then immediately veered off the deep end with a record pace that Skyrider could never hope to match, and even then still received a retool halfway in that made it even more nuts! And ZX was ZX.
I had fun with all of them, but the point I’m trying to get across here is that they’re not shows I find easy to recommend because they’re the most... Another One Of These when it comes to Showa Rider. I can tell you so many different things about V3, X, Amazon and Stronger that makes them worth watching; but when it comes to Skyrider and Super-1 I cannot tell you with a straight face that you should watch these shows unless you are that interested in seeing every Kamen Rider like I am or you love Showa Bullshit just that much. There’s fun to be had with them, but I just don’t think they’ll end up sticking with me as much as the seven did.
So for now, that’s me done with Showa Rider for another little bit. I have now seen every single Kamen Rider but one, and... it’ll take me a bit to get to it, but I’m excited for it and the rewatches that come around it. Like I said, I consider Skyrider, Super-1 and ZX to be a second little mini-era within Showa Rider; and that’s in large part because what would come next would be a MASSIVE change for the franchise, one that seriously left an impact to this day and is still one of my all-time favourite Kamen Rider seasons. But I’m getting ahead of myself -- there were that many years between it and Super-1 (6!! 6 years until Kamen Rider would get a show again), and it is so fundamentally different that much like I did at the end of Stronger, I’m going to take a break here until then. I may have sounded like a bit of a downer on everything new I’ve experienced in this part of the Showa Rider marathon, but ultimately Showa Rider is Showa Rider -- I’ve had a good time here just like I had last time, and while it might not have lived up to those shows I’d consider stronger, I definitely don’t regret watching them. I’m just gonna give it a break so that I can be suitably excited for getting back to BLACK
