BLACK SAILS

Black Sails is now on Netflix in the US! I’d be shocked if there’s anyone on this mailing list who hasn’t watched the show, but this might be the perfect time to convince others to finally take to the seas.

I was lucky enough to be in LA for a bit of a reunion and celebratory screening. It was a glorious night of hugs, laughter, back-slapping and even a few tears (who would have expected Charles Vane to be the first to cry?) We’ve already hit the 6th most watched show on Netflix, so let’s see how high we can climb.

Scrublands is coming to Sundance Now on May 12th! You can check out the US trailer here!

And at that time, I’ll be heading to Western Australia to begin shooting the follow-up SILVER, based on Chris Hammer’s next book in the Martin Scarsden series.

I loved working on this show and was so happy with the amazing response we got when it aired in Australia, so I can’t wait to get back into Martin’s shoes.

We’re into edits on the fourth instalment of The Fetch Phillips Archives. I’m really happy with this book so hopefully we’ll have a solid release date to announce soon.

Hello all,

The first edition of House of the Dragon Big Bang was brought to a close on Friday. Now that I’ve had the weekend to decompress, and everyone has (hopefully) had a chance to catch up with everyone else’s entries, I just wanted to take a moment to thank you all for all for the hard work you’ve put into this event. Each and every one of you should be proud of what you have contributed, and I can’t thank you all enough for taking a chance on this (and by extension, me!)

The good: I’m astonished by the talent that has graced the event this year. The writing has all been fantastic, and the effort that everyone has put in has shone through. I’ve also enjoyed the variety; I was anticipating drowning in Aemond content, but was pleasantly surprised at the diversity - Jacelaena and Jacegon were the standout ships of the event for me! The artists have all outdone themselves, and the array of differing mediums has been great; from stunning moodboards and expertly detailed digital art to lovingly crafted hand drawn pieces. Last but not least, are our event beta readers - keeping people motivated when they feel as though they're flagging, or just tidying up grammar and punctuation where needed - you've been absolute superstars. I really hope everyone is pleased with and proud of what they’ve collaborated to produce.

The bad: This is the first event of its kind for this particular fandom, so it has not been without its teething issues. Ensuring everyone sees all of the updates and instructions, and is kept informed of what’s happening has been a struggle. Not everyone is comfortable joining a Discord server, Tumblr only allows for 20 tags per posts and even then is spotty with notifications. For next time, on the sign up sheet, I will include a contact preference option and push out notifications via email newsletter, Tumblr and Discord, targeted specifically to who has selected which options, so everyone is kept up to date. I will also implement check ins to ensure everyone has what they need and is able to manage their workload effectively to meet the deadline.

The ugly: I received a rather unsavoury anonymous ask on the Big Bang Tumblr account, slating me as a person and how I was running the event. Considering the first fic had yet to even go live, I was a little shocked by this. When I posted about it in the Discord, they sent a follow up, but forgot to toggle anon, so I saw who it was. I won’t put you on blast, but I hope now that the event has drawn to a close your opinion is a little less sour. If not, perhaps you’ll have a better experience next time, or find another event that’s better suited. C’est la vie!

I am aiming for these to be bi-annual events. We will absolutely go again, and come back bigger and better. I plan to launch this again in May, so the sign up and pairing process will begin around the end of January, to ensure people have sufficient time to prepare. Keep your eyes peeled on the Big Bang Tumblr page for details.

In the meantime, we will be running another writing prompt event in December - much like September’s literary prompt event - so if you’re looking for more writing challenges then please get involved when this launches.

I’ll be creating a masterlist of everyone’s Big Bang entries, which will go live by the end of the week.

the book is even getting good reviews, too! it’s exciting!

release party (hosted by my husband) is on 8/7. I am taking suggestions on what to wear. please, I beg of you, help me out here.

I’m finally out of the “I will never fix this draft” zone, and into the “hey this could be pretty good” zone! phew. thank goodness.

chucking my current draft over to some beta readers to see if my edits worked, but I have a ways to go in terms of cleaning up my prose. (sorry, beta readers)

however, once I know the story is working, editing will be pretty straight-forward.

and then it’s on to my editor!!

Progress update 3/29

Akello’s sprites, chapter backgrounds, and concept art have been uploaded to the appropriate patreon galleries so if you’re a member with “behind the scenes” access, check your messages.

I’ve been working on TCM’s musical vibes with melonine music, a sneak peak is in the future for patrons.

Still looking to drive sign ups to my email newsletter!  I’ll be using it to get as many people as possible to the kickstarter page once we go live-- it will help us immensely in the algorithm and you don’t have to make a pledge to help.  So please consider joining if you haven’t already, those first 24 hours on kickstarter are critical.

Official previews won’t be ready for a couple weeks still but the tentative Kickstarter launch date will be May 1.

I’ll be offering sexy body pillows/dakimakura of all three ROs.  One side shows their human form and the other their monster form.

Bonus, the daki art has been done by @booket-png who is the game’s og artist.

Work is beginning this week on the UI/GUI overhaul of TCM.  I’m not ready to announce the expert I’ve brought on just yet but their skill is really going to elevate the look and polish of the game and I’m super excited.

Mostly these last few weeks I’ve been working on kickstarter fulfillment and shipping plans and then also on the game’s soundtrack and my goals for the UI overhaul.

Stay tuned for more formal announcements regarding preview dates, kickstarter details like tiers and pricing and all that!

It has had an excellent and enjoyable run but the Co-op Digital newsletter ends next month. We’re going to wrap up with 3 newsletters considering questions about membership, shops, and the material world. 

Thank you all for reading and sending ideas. The Co-op story continues on the brilliant Co-op Digital blog. Rod will be writing about climate change and carbon transformation at Holdfast and about money at Checksies. See you there?

Could membership be much more radical?

Local stores offer a convenient geographic proximity - they’re just round the corner.

Could they offer a second kind of proximity, and be a critical part of communities? Could they help communities thrive with services, support, infrastructure as well as just the shop and the local causes bits?

Can a shop turn into a true member organisation? Can it help repair and maintain community? 

These questions matter because the world is changing ever faster, and everything (products, services, institutions, infrastructure, jobs, cities etc) will need looking after, improving or remaking.

“Can you fix it? Because this bike and I have been through a lot.” says Reenie at the bike shop. 

Jim, behind the counter, nods. “Your battery has done a lot of kilometres and it is very tired now. I can swap it out for a new one for 499 which is the battery and the labour. Or I can sign you up for this Gobattery service which is a new battery every year for 199 annually and the labour’s free.”

“Which would you do?”, asks Reenie.

“Um, probably not Gobattery”, Jim murmurs quietly. 

“OK. What happens to the old battery?”

“And your old battery will go have a relaxing retirement doing grid backup for a shopping centre or somewhere like that.” Then more brightly, Jim adds: “We’re a member of The Co-op, are you? I can add you in the app, it only costs 20. You get discounts in shops, vote on decisions, and help each other out. I can give you a 50 discount right now, so the card will cost you nothing. But it’s like you’re part of” - Jim’s hands wheeling - “you know, a… Thing.”

“Yeah OK, sounds interesting? Thanks.”

Jim taps at the terminal and there’s a quick transactional handshake of lights and bings. An app downloads to Reenie’s mobile, which briefly pops a green tick saying that the app is properly signed and isn’t hoovering up too much personal data. Reenie opens the app - it has already onboarded her - which says both of their Co-op memberships have earned 200 points for the transaction, and a green leaf grows on the screen: a small but positive update to the carbon budgets of Reenie, of Jim, and of the Co-op itself.

“Nice. It all adds up, you’ll see”, says Jim.

Several weeks later, and late in the evening, Reenie’s Co-op app bleeps out a red alert. A fellow member needs help: their premises is flooding. Reenie shrugs, grabs a coat and heads for the bike. The map takes her back to the bike shop. 

Before she can make a joke about the emergency services arriving, Jim shouts: “The river burst its banks! Move things up, or put sandbags here, please?”. 

And Reenie and a couple of others get to work, placing sandbags, lifting everything onto higher shelves, bailing water out of the shop. The culvert is cleared and the flood water starts to recede. It takes two hours. The bottom layer of the shop is now a landscape of grey mud over unidentifiable product shapes. The same mud that coats them.

Jim says: “Thank you so much. This stuff needs to dry out but some of it’ll be ok. Hey, take anything you want too, seriously, thanks. And I’ll update the app and send you points tomorrow.”

“OK cool. But it’s not about the points.”

Fall has finally arrived, and here in New York City, it certainly feels like it. Autumn is by far my favorite time of year, and I’m so into the spirit of the season that I’ll be heading into the Hudson Valley today in search of a good pumpkin farm or two, with Vince Guaraldi's “Great Pumpkin” soundtrack on the radio, of course! As if to tee up the spooky season perfectly, today happens to be National Ghost Hunting Day. I, for one, ain’t afraid of no ghosts, especially if they are the friendly variety shown in these signs I’m sharing today. First up is one of the friendliest ghosts you’ll ever meet. He’s the adorable mascot for The Spirit Shop in Victorville, California, and I went hunting for him last October. I think he was more scared of me than I was of him. He’s been haunting this liquor shop since 1965. Next, we head to the House of Spirits in Loyal, Wisconsin. Here’s another ghost who seems terrified, in this case of a bottle of spirits. He’s super cute and definitely in the category of friendly ghosts. The business dates to about 1970. I made a long detour here to hunt down this specter, and it did not disappoint. Our next two stops are free of cute ghosts, but they are spooky nonetheless. Welcome to the Good Spirits Shoppe in Westbrook, Connecticut. This isn’t necessarily a play on ghostly things, but the look of this sign – the lantern, the typeface – certainly gives it a haunted-house air. And finally, once you’re done with all this ghost hunting, you can call it a night at the Ghost Ranch Lodge in Tucson, Arizona. Well, you can’t actually, because this is housing now, but the developers have done a wonderful job of restoring the neon sign. This completes our ghost tour! No matter what, the ritual reflections will always be tied back to the notion of magic.
