Another reason why trw feels weird with what it tries to fit into its runtime (and also just generally falls short of its potential) to me is that, by its nature, I can't help but compare it to both acoc AND exuc. And neither of those comparisons put it in the best light. Comparing trw to its in-universe counterpart of acoc makes trw look so much less dark and so much more clunky with its attempts to show complex political machinations. But then you also can't help but see Matt Mercer open with "Water" and remember Brennan's "Fire" and. Suddenly, you're holding up this story that feels like it's sprinting to cover multiple years, shoving aside characters and plot beats that would've been cool to really hone in on because for some reason we have to go go go! You're holding that up against what is to me a genuine masterclass in storytelling that delves as deep as it possibly can into The Worst Single Day Ever. And yeah. Of course in these contexts, trw is going to come out feeling even more janky to me. It's got so many good bits to it, but when held up against acoc (its universe partner) and exuc (the Big Dark Prequel Short Series DMed by Another Guy Covering A Major Event in History)... Its whole vibes feel out of place.

intentional comparisons to both properties by both matt and brennan have been made, so I think it's fair game with the caveat that obviously it isn't a 1:1 at all.

I agree completely with this! It feels like the rushing is also compounded by the fact that trw has a bit of an identity crisis over whether it wants to be an acoc in terms of being an in-depth political fantasy with Big Consequences and Realistic Stakes, or exu calamity in terms of being about antiheroes getting up to shit who are hit with a potentially world ending or changing event, real grand fantasy stuff.

The issue with that is that on top of the rushed timeline, you're also trying to shove two radically different stories and tones in. the first half of the season, we're largely focused on the source of the blackmail, the political aspects of the FDA, and the killing of Pamela Rocks. Then in the back half (particularly eps 5 and 6) we take a wild shift into underground mushroom society that never really... shifts back to finish the political stuff. for sake of brevity, I'll just say that both storylines suffer from having to share space. the political aspects are left unfinished or unexplored after setting up some really cool stuff: the cheddars are left untouched, amangeaux's child is never brought into the plot, we barely get to know karna's deal. the fantasy aspects feel a little out of left field and underdeveloped, with no pcs except raphaniel feeling a well tethered connection to it.

in a longer campaign, I'd love both of these stories! at this length, it really probably should have been just one.

matt is a really talented storyteller, but it doesn't get to shine here because so much of trw feels spread thin. I love what we got! it just needed more clarity and focus, and a lot of elements simplified.

for tying back to the ask, exu:calamity made the very smart choice to start with 6 pcs who already knew each other, in one city, in the course of less than 24 hours. the political aspects are thrown out the window bc nothing will matter in the apocalypse, which clears the way for brennan to really narrow in on the aspects he wants, namely go crazy with the religious and scientific plots

This episode truly showed how wonderfully agile Green is. He simply dodges all the cakes coming at him in such a natural and casual way that it's actually quite fascinating to watch. He even dances! :0 sigshwahsh

He is canonically the most agile of the group and I love how that fact was used in this episode; The entire episode was silly (/pos), but it still didn't miss any opportunity to showcase everyone's abilities and skills, which is something I really loved seeing. <33

Honestly speaking- I think one of the main points in this episode was to showcase Green's agility more??? idkk- Maybe. loll

As for Cross Guild and Vampire Buggy - Oh Boy Have I Got Ideas

Aside from the obvious hilarity that, between the goth, the mafioso, and the bright ass clown, it's the CLOWN who is the vampire.... well. I really love little tidbits about vampire lore and world building so I'm gonna make this a silly lil mix of Vampire Concepts and expanding on Devil Fruit ideas.

It boils down to Devil Fruits being edible deals with the Sea Devil, thus changing their biology undeniably. For zoans, this equates them to smth similar to were-creatures of some kind, bleeding between the lines of their species. For logias, they are more similar to elemental spirits, witches, or some other element based being. ((I love alchemical spirits so I'm leaning to variants or derivatives there bc AAAA)). Paramecias, being the "weaker" of the Fruits, have more... "human-passing" options. It boils down sort of a mind, spirit, body type of thing with zoan, logia, paramecia respectively.

Anyway yeah Buggy's manifests as a form of vampirism. He didn't realize what exactly that was, nor how Devil Fruits work when he first ate it ((He was about 9/10 at most I'd say)). It was only after a meet up and play fight with Whitebeard that the other captain casually asked what Buggy's new side effects are. When nobody understands, he calls over Marco and his other Fruit Eater children because it's time for Devil Fruit crash course and this kid needs an educated adult.

Turns out Buggy's mild anemia was due to his Fruit and his oversensative observation Haki has always impacted all of his senses, so the uptick in smell barely even registered to him. When Whitebeard hears this, he is mildly frothing. He is ultimately assured when Roger chips in there with some of his own observations and even surprised a few people when he wordlessly passes Buggy some of his food as they talk. Bugs scarfs it down like a man starved, swaying happily while Shanks tries to steal more to pile onto the blue hair boy's semi-forgotten plate.

So yeah. Series of weird events for the realization. Very silly.

Come Cross Guild, I think Buggy probably had an entire system there. He's competent all things considered, for a man in a sea of monsters as it were. He just so happens to have a mild sun sensitivity, have sharper canines, have heightened senses and drinks blood. Not the weirdest thing.

Crocodile is vaguely aware of the side effects for paramecia types - Bon Clay often needed reminders of his own sense of self, and he's had others in Baroque Works he worked with. Even Robin had some odd little quirks here and there, well hidden though she kept them. He doesn't recognize Buggy's at first because he hides them and also... doesn't.

It's one of those things where it's known but not really a topic of discussion. Buggy never goes out of his way to hide it. It just Is. The drinks he has all the time? Blood.

Mihawk learns that the hard way lmao.

Actually I'll just make a list of Sillies

• Mihawk once saw Buggy drinking what he thought was red wine, and when the clown set the bottle and glass down to go do something, he snatched it up, gave it a swirl, a sniff, a sip - and immediately paused. Odd, he thinks, placing the bottle back. Odd, but not the oddest thing he has seen.

• Crocodile once dragged Buggy out of bed early one morning for work and made a snide remark about a day not fucking up his fancy skin care routine when Buggy hollered about his sunscreen. ((He did feel guilty later that evening when Buggy was covered in hives and blistered burns. He helped with the aloe and antihistamines that night))

• Mihawk is Fascinated by Buggy's fangs and need to drink blood. He loves trashy paranormal romance, and every time Buggy hisses, or mentions being hungry, or so much as yawns enough to show his fangs, he is Looking Disrespectfully. Straight up Autistic Gaze Meme Eyes.

• Crocodile is also Very Interested but wouldn't be caught DEAD alluding to it. He will side eye from afar.

• some days are harder than most, and when Buggy's clothes get torn or he's low on sun block, Mihawk and Crocodile both will do the shivalrous give-partner-his-jacket/coat thing.

• Buggy makes do mostly with carefully maintained stores of blood in sealed wine bottles and rarely actually bites anyone. Animals aren't common either but he does hunt sometimes. Eventually with Cross Guild rolling in the profits, Crocodile and Mihawk work together to uptick the medical areas and Buggy has access to a far fresher supply.

• post Med Expansion, Buggy can fairly frequently be found skipping along in his typical wear with a blood bag in hand, a corner snipped and a cartoonish swirly straw slipped in. He is THRIVING.

• when outsides hear about vampire allegations, they Immediately think Mihawk, then perhaps Crocodile as a possible second. The hilarity that unfold with the reaction to the truth is never short of insane.

• Buggy actually has only ever bitten a few people in his life. Once, Roger. A few times, Shanks. Once, a nameless, faceless marine in the Wrong Place at the Wrong Time. Once an enemy bigger and stronger who threatened his fledgling little crew. It's odd, the feelings behind it, the sensory input. But eventually, he grows comfortable enough with Mihawk and Crocodile to try, to sink his fangs into flesh and drink from them. It's.... steamy to say the least.

Ngl,,,,, I have a love-hate relationship with Tobias (Tattersall) and Skye Hawthorne

Like it's not even funny how much I absolutely adore and DESPISE them 😭

With Skye, it's mostly hate because she's the reason the boys have such unresolved Mommy Issues 💀 At the very least, I'm happy Grayson can find a much healthier mother figure in Acacia it's one of the reasons I'm so excited for The Grandest Game because I wanna see their relationship develop!

But at the same time this woman is fascinating in terms of characterization. I kinda wished JLB did more with Skye, but for the most part, I enjoyed Skye's characterization in the OG trilogy because of how consistent her characterization's been. (We can at least give Skye credit for giving the iconic line “Do you know what the difference is between Millions and Billions, Ava? Because at a certain point, it's not about the money” /hj)

With Tobias.... Potentially controversial take, but I LOVE his character sm.

Like yes, what he said to Grayson and Jameson in their respective flashback sequences (yes, including the one with Emily in the treehouse) was messed up. Telling Grayson that it was going to be him, and telling Jameson he was ordinary is very much fucked up for him to say to them. Although, in my opinion, the Jameson thing felt kind of out of nowhere because it wasn't really there in the OG trilogy

However, like with Skye, I am fascinated by the way JLB had characterized him. The fact that he was loyal to Alice, apologized to Zara and Skye in the letter of what was supposed to be their game, and cared about his grandsons enough to make them better men than he'll ever be. Fucked up as the man may be, you can tell he had his moments where he genuinely cared as a person. (I especially liked that he had a soft spot for Xander and Rebecca, because that needs to be discussed more often!!)

I'm honestly hoping JLB stays true to Tobias' character if he ever makes an appearance in TGG via flashbacks or character mentions because what got me so hooked on this serious (other than Grayson) was from how RIDICULOUSLY invested I was in this manipulative, loyal, machiavellian old texan man.

So, Tsumiki is definitely present in the Threshold universe! Gojo didn't mention her by name when he was telling Megumi's story, but when he said Megumi didn't want the Zen'in fortune because he's "stubborn as hell", he was talking about Tsumiki.

It's a parallel to canon basically. The Zen'in — obsessed with bloodlines as they are — seriously underestimated the strength of the Fushiguro siblings' bond when they refused to factor Tsumiki into their discussions with Megumi. Hence, he followed Gojo into music rather than rely on their dirty money. That's why the Zen'in blame Gojo, even though it's really just because Megumi's a spiteful little so-and-so! 😏

Because of the parallels with canon, Megumi would try to keep Tsumiki away from the toxicity of the music industry as much as possible — hence why she wasn't at the album launch. However, I like to think that her career is adjacent to Megumi's in some capacity! As much as I love writing about the Fushiguro siblings' relationship with Gojo, the inclusion of that story served more to give Suguru a look into the real Gojo Satoru, so she's unlikely to feature in this fic. I think continuing their story would require a sequel — which I'm not even gonna think about until Threshold is finished... I'm not, I'm not thinking about it!

As for Gojo's dedication at the concert, he spoke in Japanese so Suguru would understand him, so most of the audience wouldn't have known what he was saying immediately. However, I'm sure the online reactions once the videos were translated and passed around were very interesting! Having said that, it's hard to communicate the nuances of the Japanese language in an English language fic. To most English speakers, "this was the first song I played for them" seems like a deliberate omission of gender, but that's not the case in Japanese. So, I imagined Gojo using his native tongue very responsibly in that moment, sticking to language that sounds purely professional — but that wouldn't stop fans from speculating 👀

I'm not planning to explore Gojo's past in *too* much detail because it's mostly his present and his future that are relevant to the story. Meanwhile, it's Suguru with the big fat question mark over his past... 🫠 So, if you want to ask questions, go ahead and I will simply avoid sharing spoilers! Like no shit 😭 she kept doing it for months after and I think she eventually stopped but like erasing character's sexuality like that when he canonically struggled with being gay too is just gross.

As for games, Imma finally be able to properly play all of my favourite games because my laptop is so fucking old that it takes forever to play Sims 4 (admittedly I do have billion mods) let alone something else. I only played BG3 on my bestie's PC and I'll finally be able to do it properly 😭 I swear the only game I don't have any problems with playing on current laptop is Monster Prom. Damn chapter 10... damn. All these chapters felt like a ticking time bomb anyways and this chapter was the explosion, or was it? Can it get worse? I gotta say now that everything is "out" or that shit happened, pointing fingers at who's fault it is wrong. Sure JK was an idiot for going to the shop anyways but he trusted them. But if you say it like that, you could also say he would've never slept with naoko if sasha wouldn't have dumped him 🤷🏻‍♀️ so in conclusion, there is not one person at fault.

I felt bad for both of them. JKs "please don't breakup" text made me feel so bad for him too. One's privat life AND career is in danger, and the other one's reputation and career is in danger. And the situation is literally so damn complicated. It's like walking to a dead end with whatever plan they go with. And I want to add that I was not surprised at the "lawyers buy photos before they get released". The thought is just pretty fucked up, that you were in fact getting stalked.

I don't know for what outcome I hope for. I feel like their relationship is kinda growing apart. This is the feeling I'm getting from this book. Because it's always good between them until it isn't and then it's weird and I feel like both have no idea how to deal with it. I hope and wish for them to work this out too. I love this couple sm! I hope they can built ultimate trust and love to eachother and work together more in the future.

I like to think of the books as... the first two were sort of them against themselves, and this book is presenting the opportunity for them to be united against external forces. Will they rise to that or fall apart?

I'm fascinated watching everyone try to decide who is to "blame". This happens a lot throughout this story and I'm thrilled to write scenarios that people are divided on because ultimately that's my goal. Sometimes it's one of them unequivocably making a mistake, other times it's a really complicated situation or very nuanced or there is no clear one at "fault", or that doesn't even matter/isn't helpful for moving the situation forward.

This one in particular reminds me a bit of Sasha's delibartiong during Chlamydiapocalypse, when Dr. Kim guided her on how to navigate "fault" or "blame" in a situation. Despite feeling like she's the more flexible of them, I think Sasha very much wants black and white answers on guilt and innocence, and Jungkook is actually more open to ambiguous acceptance (...unless he feels falsely accused LOL.)

Anyway thanks as always for sharing your thoughts!! Discussion was so heated on the last chapter, I'm prety far along with the next one and had secretly hoped to get it done before my trip but alas, it'll have to come in the next couple of weeks.

- fair warning this is my favorite episode and also my least favorite episode and i am not okay. this post is mostly for myself

- intentionally listened to this on april fools day so i could pretend that michaels death was just a silly little prank

- i love all of nikolas lines she’s so cute. her little “hellooooo!!” to elias in the beginning, the way she keeps going “can i call u elias?” and says that she’s his good friend, her constantly insulting jon and saying that he’s rude and that he has bad skin, “ah, it’s downright uncanny!” “out with the old, in with… well, in with the you!” she’s such a good character

- MICHAEL☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️ i love him sm and all of his lines are also so good. even tho the main reason i liked him initially was because of his voice he’s also just so fascinating and his, as jon would call it, “identity issues” are so interesting. i love how even after all this time and all that the distortion has done there still is some humanity left inside of it, some semblance of the original michael shelley still fighting to exist. i know he’s here to literally murder jon but the fact that michael willingly gave jon a statement despite it going against his nature and entire existence really just shows that he is not a complete monster. the distortion desires to kill but as a past institute employee michael understands jon’s desire for knowledge, and even though he wants to take his revenge on the archives, i also think he has some empathy for jon. michael was killed because of his own ignorance and naivety, and i think he can see himself in jon, who’s also suffering because of his own ignorance, being pushed around and manipulated by his boss just like michael was. the distortion wants to kill, but no matter how angry or upset he is, michael shelley does not, and unfortunately for jon the distortion is just the more powerful force in this conflict

Macaque's face like "bud what are you signing me up for???" and the stunned Pikachu face when MK's finally had it with his pessimism. especially bc, as we discussed. he's just sitting there on purpose, saying all that. no where to put those feelings but talking about them and getting captured just to see someone else change his mind and give him direction. Kind of like when he said "I'm just feeling out the winning side" testing the waters, etc. Macaque's fatal flaw is his complacency and acceptance. Didn't seem to take much convincing other than acknowledging who Macky used to be in the past, but its sweet cause the saying goes "a hero will sacrifice someone to save the day, a warrior protects the hero" and Monkie Gang was in it to win with zero losses and protect everyone. hence the episode title, "Time to be Warriors." plural, ALL OF THEM. "What can I say, I'm dramatic?" you don't realize how much of a fascinating psychological specimen his mentality is. I'm trying real hard to dig into it. It's all about characters who want something but don't chase after it and say or do something else to seek it and then cover it with a persona and that's excluding the other fun story aspects of the lovely "error and fixing the error gone wrong with good intentions" theory of Point B of the Feud.

scenes that rot my brain

when they mutiny against jack in the s1 finale. that whole bit, from gwen with rhys’ body in the autopsy bay to owen shooting jack to when they trigger the emergency protocol and open the rift. ill never get over how it first felt to watch that whole scene for the first time, it drove me insane. it still drives me insane. ive watched it 300 times it's sooo 😩 MY scene. g-d.

well, that’s my scene, and so are all the owen & ianto scenes in s1ep12. those two make me feral. ive gushed about theose scenes before, so ill spare u this time. my otp 4eva. and also owen having a villainous breakdown wahahaha. my fucked up little guy of all time

the scene where owen’s patching gwen up in countrycide drives me nuts. it’s such a clever seduction scene + it’s so intimate. i love it. that moment between jack and owen at the end of combat... “for a few seconds i felt totally at peace... and then you blunder in. do you always know best, jack? is that what you believe?” “i want you back at work tomorrow.” that scene has always driven me crazy. there’s a few scenes in the show where jack’s monstrous and the others yell at him over it, but that one hits the hardest. owen just seems to actually cut through him in that moment, and it kills me.

the scene at the conference table in s2ep5. i’m not the biggest fan of that ep, i talked abt it more the other day, but that scene drives me bonkers, for a number of reasons… the insight into the characters (owens mommy issues!!! tosh n ianto’s need for purpose!!! gwen loves rhys AND jack!!!), for sure, but especially the way jack’s relationship with all of them is presented. ill talk about it a lot more when i discuss his character, but jack… reminds me of a cult leader, in a lot of ways, and it’s most prominent in that scene especially. the show doesn’t realize it’s framing him like that, and the fandom doesn’t seem to pick up on it either. but i do, and i think it’s fascinating. 

gwen drugging rhys in combat. it just kind of blew my mind when i first saw it - there's a moment with every character where i went “oh wtf theyre fucked up. ok im obsessed now” (owen's was ghost machine, ianto's was actually ‘pray they survive’ in meat, jack & tosh never had one for me which is probs why they dont rot my brain quite as much fhdskjf) - that was gwen's. also important to note burn gorman agrees w me bc on the commentary of this ep during this scene he was clapping n laughing n probably kickin his feet HFDKSJFHDSJKFDSK he gets me

all of fragments tbh esp owens portion but specifically ianto crying when he walks away from jack at the end of his segment, and owen crying when he's talking to the doctor + him n jack walking thru the cemetery. aaaa.

scenes that make me smile

the very first scene in the hub in the pilot :) it just feels a little bit magical in an industrial, bleak, kitchen-sink sort of way, which is what i love sm abt tw, the way it occasionally strikes that balance. the way stepping into a big base in a sewer manages to still feel magical… that’s special.

in episode 2 when theyre having lunch + in episode 4 when theyre at the bar, when they’re all gathered around and laughing. ohh i wish we got more of that

every time gwen n owen are dumbass giggling besties, or teasing each other… twice in s2ep10, and in ep 7, and then when theyre fooling around at the beginning of s2ep2. i love themmmm those two are my idiots they make me smile

in ghost machine, when gwen holds the device and sees herself crying and covered in blood, and afterwards she’s all dazed and she looks at owen and he stares back and he looks dangerous. i loveee that scene. will never get over s1 owen. he’s a ticking time bomb and when he explodes he nearly destroys the world. character of all time to me. i love that he redeems himself in the end but ohhhhh sometimes i think of a world where he becomes a proper antagonist. he rlly walks the precipice 

g-d and the scene where he had the knife held to ed morgan, when i first watched it i didn’t know what he was gonna do and it was so tense. 

when lisa was first revealed in cyberwoman and mogwai played…. transcendent. the outfit was silly right off the bat but the vibe + reveal was cool enough i was rlly excited. i love the concepts in that episode i wish they took it more seriously. no metal bikini + no pteradacyl fight and we could’ve had it all. but also. would it be torchwood without metal bikini + pteradacyl fight.

“it made me happy” scene in countrycide. a lot of people seem to find that ep upsetting, i wasn’t really affected by the subject matter, but That got me. chilling. you go into torchwood expecting evil aliens, so the episodes about evil humans really hit.

the resurrection scene in s2ep7. i’m getting tired so im not gonna babble as much but agh. i wanna eventually do an analysis on owen & jack’s dynamic - i’ll talk about it there.

also, it’s a little moment but in the same episode, when gwen calls rhys crying… it reminds me of that bit in succession, during connor’s wedding, when tom calls greg, which is one of my favorite moments in that episode too. taking the time in the middle of a tragedy to step aside and privately call a loved one for support, bc u need a minute to break down when uve been doing ur best to stay strong. i think torchwood is bad at handling grief and letting their characters experience it, so it’s a nice little moment that actually lets her grieve. that, and the glove clearly triggers her, so she got double whammied with the death of a friend + the reminder of the time she nearly died. again, in a show that doesn’t typically frame moments of weakness and pain very sympathetically, it’s refreshing. 

idk why, but in ep7, when it goes back and forth between owen figuring out the murders + tosh crying to mary while she looks unsympathetically down at her… it’s just a well-filmed, cool scene, and i enjoy it. thrills me, heh. also owen adhd icon

everything about this scene was so telling. some find it romantic, and some find it unrealistic to be considered romantic. but i think anakin as a character toes the line between just enough and too much. he’s so fascinating to me, because this creepy stalkerish vibe he gives is so unapologetically him. this is romance to him, this is how he shows his diversion and his love

people get touchy when ppl talk about padme and anakin’s relationship and let me say this. i like them together, i don’t hate them at all, i think they were perfect for the narrative of the story. but i know they weren’t the healthiest (what relationship is?) and anakin especially is not the healthiest. (let’s ignore the domestic abuse when she was pregnant for a sec, just put that stain aside)

i’ve noticed what he does to padme is lovebombing and maybe it was unintentional, but he fell in love with the idea of her as a child, and then he talks over and over again about how he needs to be with her. compliments her, and gives her speeches about how she makes him feel. and you see how sometimes in aotc and in the deleted scenes he talks over her, insists he knows better than her etc. if he loved her for her instead of the idea of her in his head, he’d know her capabilities and he’d admire them instead of doing what he actually did.

and i won’t say padme doesnt like it, but she did state she was uncomfortable when he stared at her with the eyes of an admirer and not a friend (at first). her reasoning for them not to be together was their careers and yes people make rash decisions when they’re about to die and she’s kissed him a couple times so it’s not like he forced her to be with him or forced her to love him ,,, but he did persist after she gave him hints not to.

anyways. i love padme and anakin’s dynamic, i think it really shows the cracks in them both and it captivates me tbh. anakin’s psychology is so fun for me to discuss and i know you just wanted to show me a tiktok but that scene is so pivotal to my point aaaa i love shit like this

You joined the mercenaries as medical support, mostly to help poor Medic who started to complain to Ms Pauling about the other mercs, saying, “Those dummkopfs can’t stay alive for even a few minutes!”

The original plan was for you to just operate the Medigun on the field and that was it but, of course, Medic had other plans for you.

When you two first met, you immediately started discussing about all kinds of medical stuff. You were fascinated by Medic’s accomplishments. I mean, who wouldn’t be? Even the most renowned doctors all over the world haven’t managed to accomplish half of what he has.

Given the fact that you shared his passion for medicine, thirst for knowledge, and were relatively new to the medical field, he took you in as his disciple straight away. 

He taught you all about his different inventions and theories. Medic was more interested in the end product than the process of how he got there so he left the science and whatnot for you to figure out. 

You two were the perfect duo. Medic did the crazy brainstorming and experimenting while you examined his impressive messes and made sense of it using the knowledge you got from your medical textbooks. 

Medic enjoyed your company a lot. Finally, someone who could understand him and his wild ideas. The two of you would often stay up late, talking about all kinds of things while sipping your drinks. 

Naturally, Medic eventually began to treat you like his own kid. And although that’s mostly a good thing, it can be a bit annoying, not just for you but also for the other mercs.

The thing about Medic is that he’s very protective of the people he cares about. And I mean really protective. 

If you’re out in battle and you get even just a scratch on your face, Medic will flip out. He’ll be scolding the other mercs for letting you get hurt while hugging you tightly.

He’s not just protective of you in battle. You can bet that he’ll be making sure you eat healthily and avoid unhealthy substances such as alcohol and cigarettes. 

Like I said earlier, when you hang out with him, you two mostly just chat while you eat or drink. You talk about a lot of different things together. Although the topic is usually medical-related, there are those times when you have a heart-to-heart discussion about each other’s lives and feelings. 

Medic shared memories of his childhood and family and so did you. You both feel comfortable talking about personal topics like that with each other.

If you ever tear up while talking about something emotional for you, Medic will bring you in for a hug and pat your back soothingly. “There, there. It’s alright, my dear Täubchen. Thank you for telling me.”

After one of those emotional discussions, when you calmed down after being comforted by him, you gave him a big smile and said, “Thanks, dad.”

You had to start comforting and hugging him instead because tears of joy started streaming down his face after he realised what you said. 

Overall, you two have a very open and loving relationship and are the best of partners in everything. :)

Lee Soo Man (SM) recently stated that he feels K-pop can achieve what religion has failed to achieve. Do you agree or disagree? Is this a dangerous statement to make, or unsurprising given K-pop's accoutrements? Is a secular, pop-culture-based religion such a bad idea?

Thinking of how to possibly give an answer to this, I was reminded of a famous Malraux quote in which he said "The 21st century will be religious, or it will not be at all." It could have been a good introduction for our discussion, except Malraux never said nor wrote that statement. Bear with me through this short explanation before I actually get to the words of another great (!), that is, Lee Soo Man.

I decided to do a quick google search in order to familiarize myself again with the various interpretations of the supposed quote because I wanted to be sure if it would make sense in using it in my response. I was surprised to find out that it has been made up somehow, a combination of other statements. To think the quote was also used in my high school history book and how fascinated I was at that time (or mostly confused, I wasn't really sure what it meant). How easy it is for the wrong information to be spread and become widely accepted. And I was nearly the point of contributing to that myself! It appears that the quote is actually a one sentence summary of some ideas Malraux indeed had about religion and how it will change in the 21st century. An actual quote sounds like this:

"The central problem of the end of the century will be the religious problem - in a form as different from that which we know, as Christianity was from the ancient religions. "

I will link the article which explains the common misconception and everyone is free to explore and read more about Malraux, The Human Condition and other philosophical themes related to humanity and religion.

In this particular case, I will take the freedom of coming up with an argument based on the actual quote, with the risk of maybe grossly misunderstanding it. But, as much as I've wrote a few paragraphs already on something unrelated, this is merely a BTS/K-Pop tumblr blog, so please be understanding with me.

So, the question is, is the 21st century religious? It is, it just changed its gods. Just as politeism was replaced by Christianity in some parts of the world and then Christianity losts its importance that it once had several centuries later, we are now facing a world in which I might suspect, we found our gods among us. Of course these gods are on some higher level, but they're not quintesentially different from the rest of us. They may remain gods forever, or easily stripped of that nature in almost an instant. Becoming a god is possible and the concept is sold as being attainable for everyone who wants it and works hard enough for it. I'd say even Warhol predicted what Malraux said in a way, with his ideas on everyone's 15 minutes of fame. We are living individualistic times in which we are told that we are important and special. Except we also love to worship others who are somehow a bit more important and special. We each have this need to believe in something, someone. For some it's Jesus Christ, while for others is Britney. We need them because they inspire, they bring comfort, they are doing things and are able to reach masses of people in a way that regular folks cannot.

And finally, Lee Soo Man is right, but also wrong. The idols he helped create and the culture of idols are some equivalent of gods that are worshipped, but they did not replace religion. They are religion. I don't think religion has ever failed. Some forms of religion may have failed or have been replaced, but the concept itself is ever present. One could say they're an atheist and they don't believe in a Christ or Buddha, but what about the shrine in their room containing albums, posters, photocards, merchandise? Listening and watching regularly to what the idols say and do? Preaching and praising them to the masses on social media? That's a form of religious worship. And it's not surprising because idols are meant to be worshipped. For their skills, talent, personality, beauty. It's all we talk about everyday. And some are religious extremists while others see it as something more casual, situating idols in a row with liking actors, writers, sportsmen, thinkers, gurus, youtubers, their own self.

Your Billy post was seriously so big brained like I couldn't have said it better myself. I find Billy as a character fascinating but completely hate what the fandom made him out to be. The fact that some of his stans go after a 14 year old girl in the show just because she expressed how she truly felt about her abuser is insane. Like they give Billy so much grace but can't do the same for his victims. I saw one post where they discussed how bad they felt when Max tranquilized him and threatened him with the bat in s2, saying omg poor boy is so scared because Max is just like Neil. I'm sorry but what??? A bunch of kids had to watch Billy almost killing another human being but he is the victim, plus Steve was probably the first person ever to stand up towards Billy for Max, of course she had to do something. What I'm saying this woobyfication of him is simply disgusting because it takes everything the character was away. And for what, I'm just saying if Dacre wasn't hot we wouldn't really see those many insane takes. Also Harringrove is just one of the most disgusting ships in my opinion, how can you ship sweet boy Steve Harrington with a guy who wanted to kill him and almost did if it weren't for Max. Did we watch the same show? Furthermore why would he want to date someone who is abusive and racist towards his children, Steve loves those kids and Billy just hates everyone at this point. Again if Dacre wasn't good looking there would not be any shipping. When I watched the show without being in the fandom I was pretty neutral about Billy, but after seeing all the takes the fabdom just made me hate his character sm. You can't even discuss this with them because they get so defensive, I tried after the hate wave Max got after vol2 but they just don't want to listen.

Not to mention how Billy stans went after Caleb, the main black actor, after the interview, saying his point doesn't matter. That alone says more about his fans than everything else.

Thank you so much! I was talking about Billy with a friend on discord and trying to unpack my feelings afterwards because genuinely I DON'T want to hate him? Like yes I'd have an overall negative opinion of Billy in general because of the way he treated Lucas and Max, but also like. I don't feel this viscerally upset about Henry Bowers from It for example. The only real difference between him and Billy is he doesn't have stepmom or stepsister, otherwise the characters share the same space in the story and I mostly just feel indifferent to Henry. Maybe because no one tries to say he's not racist or play down his racism order to ship him with any of the Losers/characters we like?

Cause honestly that's mostly what it seems to boil down to for me. People can accept that Billy is a mildly shitty person only if he can be changed and forgiven in order to ship with Steve it seems. It's a complete double standard too, because I've seen people crucify Jonathan despite a very similar backstory to Billy (abuse, having to take responsibility for a sibling, beat the shit out of Steve for questionable reasons, etc) because of pictures he took way back in season one (that he did apologize and repent for, and was forgiven by both affected parties), and Stonathan is a much less popular ship because Charlie Heaton isn't considered as mainstream attractive as Dacre Montgomery.

I didn't say too much about my opinion on Steve and Billy's ship because then that post sure as hell would've gone from a mostly polite critique to a full on rant. I've never seen the appeal and I can't help but get the sense it's only because people find the actors attractive and it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Ah hi Anon! First- thrilled I have someone to discuss this show with. Second- I worked in food/service industry for a bit and it’s just as chaotic as it’s portrayed. I sort of like the second season even more than the first? The character arcs are so fascinating to me, and I love how we’re getting more bits and pieces. It’s also just inspiring to watch something that shows it’s okay if you have to start over once or twice, or even a million times. It’s never too late to start going after what you want.

I WOULD DIE FOR BOTH TINA AND SYD. They deserve the world and I love how far they’ve come this season. Literally cried when they hugged. They’re probably my faves too, but Richie has really grown on me this season. He’s a swiftie king and I love him for that.
